Pet damage was nerfed. Other stuff were nerfed too. Is it maybe possible that Anet is preparing the class for a mechanic-remake? (I.e. Pet system remake)
I honestly don’t think Anet is so stupid to nerf the bunker ranger and totally forget about the burstier builds.
You are right and I am sure some dev would gladly answer but this thread would become a flame thread if a dev posted here. People would go “Anet u suck why haven’t you fixed x” and “I hate you and you lieing idiots” etc etc…….
If I was Anet, I would create 4 sliders for the ranger.
1. Power
2. Precision
3. Health
4. Toughness
The value of all four sliders always total to 100%
E.g, The ranger can choose to have 10% power 10% precision 10% health and 70% toughness.
This would obviously be added once pets are fixed to deal constant damage regardless of enemy. I have always stood by the idea of making ranger into a sustain class. Pet’s should be able to die but they shouldn’t be able to be controlled (Cripple, Immob, Stun, Daze, Fear etc) and once they start their attack animation, they will 100% hit the enemy they started it on unless the enemy got like 500 units away or something.
1. Improved pet pathfinding (AI)
2. Control over pet skills
3. Pet dodge controlled by player (Hotkey bound)
Reasoning:
1. Do I have to explain?
2. This class is not nearly as complex as Ele, Guard or Engi
3. This could be fixed by adding a stamina bar or an instant cast skill to every pet and make the pet use it when the player taps the ‘Return’ button. The pet would return if the player holds the ‘Return’ button for 0.5s.
(This is a nice thread btw, just keep it clean people. This actually let’s anet see what we need most)
How is more usable abilities on pets too difficult?
It’s a choice, not something you must do.
Especially with the ranger. I shortbow #1’d my way to level 80 and didn’t even really bother with the pet except for sending/recalling.
Anet is aiming at the kids who can’t figure out how to be effective.
Besides, how are pet commands right now as complicated as virtues? The guardian would use the heal in a way that lets him get the most out of it. The guardian would use the aegis just before a boss’ hard-to-dodge attack. The guardian would activate Virtue of Justice when the boss has a high number of vulnerability stacks on it so that everyone gains might.
Ranger sends in the pet. Ranger calls pet when it’s low health. Ranger commands pet to use ONE skill when the situation is right.
Do you really expect to receive an answer with that kind of aggresivity?
Please, do ask them if they are planning to improve pet pathfinding in order to fix their jaggy movement!
There is nothing to argue about.
Ranger’s in MMOs are pictured as archers or is a class that is mainly focused on bows.
Take Call of Duty/Battlefield for example, a squad of 5 special whatever people with the objective to kill one special guy kills at least 100 and more enemies to get to the special guy while in reality, they would barely kill anyone compared to how many they kill in video games.
Search “Ranger (character class)” on wiki.
Rangers in D&D are both archers and melee fighters, in fact you can specialize in either/or. Sorry, you lose.
How so?
I don’t remember myself saying “D&D” but rather “MMOs”.
MMOs is plural and can refer to any MMO. The ranger is more often than not a class that uses MOSTLY bows and in less common games daggers/swords.
Also, there is an or in my statement.
Also, I said “mostly focused on bows” which does not mean “only focused on bows”.
Your point?
There is nothing to argue about.

D&D shortbow is 600 inches
D&D longbow is 1200 inches
GW2 is heavily influenced by that game. Just a thought. Maybe you should be glad it’s not 600 range?
The ranges in two different games are not the same, you should take that into consideration.
What is the animation at 2:06 ???
First, shortbow is only low-skill in PvE. Second, how am I supposed to get behind or to the side of someone?
The person can be
A: Ranged, which means he has to face me to hit me and makes the range unable to hit the side/back
B: Melee, which means he will try to get into my face to hit me and SB is not a melee weapon.
C: Fleeing, which means they have their back turned, allowing for bleeds
D: In a zerg vs zerg fight, which means the bleeds will be negligible and the ranger has to flank the whole zerg to apply bleeding at 900 range.
This is not a challenge.
This being a challenge is the same as jumping of a cliff and surviving is a challenge.
In case this IS a challenge, there is far greater challenges for Rangers.
guys…give it a chance..sit down and do some theory crafting! you can come up with some super exciting stuff! Dont give up !
No thank you after more than a half year’s waiting for Pet AI fix and weapon balance.
I had pretty much the same mindset as Aden when I got gw2.
I want to reroll too, but I don’t know which class to reroll (not enough time for them all)
Pushing a problem aside is not helping.
Come up with a solution for pets. I already came up with 2 solutions on my own and I am sure other’s can too.
For the peoplez that will reroll/give up their ranger because I am sure I will almost never play it again.
I have been waiting for a patch that fixes bugs that affect gameplay, improve pet AI so they can’t be avoided by running in small circles and buffing weapons that need it instead of doing it indirectly by nerfing those that do no need the nerf.
Which class is ‘finished’ most? Which one has the most viable builds?
and make them utility. Let us use their other skills or at least one more of them. While at it, buff their utility, make people go “Oh kitten, that spider has 3 sec immobilize” or “kitten it, he is using the the wolf”.
Make them do low damage, live much longer, but still pull aggro in PvE.
Let them interrupt whatever they are doing when one of their skills are activated by the ranger.
Maybe go to the extreme; replace pet attribute bonus with “Pet skill cooldown reduction” and let their pathfinding algorithm update more often so they stop being stupid.
Stop telling us what to do and what not to do. Mind your own business. Everyone is going to have to deal with these changes. Period. Half of them are still ridiculous and uncalled for or over the top.
But it is okay for you to tell me what to do.
Please, think before posting.
“Omg 900 range sucks, I hate anet” is not helping at all while “In exchange for the range nerf, Anet can choose one of the following suggestion that will compensate for the lower range…….” or “900 Range on SB is a bad idea because <insert constructive argument>” gives anet good feedback.
Frankly, I would be MORE than happy if they simply added a line in this update that stated, “Pets have improved AI.” Wouldn’t it be neat if our pets began to AVOID Lava Fonts and Marks?
Beyond that, I’m reserving judgement.
I was very happy when the patch notes said “improve pet ai” last time… It was sadly just a disappointment
Yes, pets are getting nerfed, if the leaked information is true.
But why do you see it as a negative thing?
Anet said they don’t want to make huge changes at once but take it slow and find a sweet spot.
We, the players, have complained about how much damage our pets stand for and how ‘broken’ the AI is.
Complaining without thinking leads nowhere. Maybe it does, but it is not something positive.
There are different possible scenarios:
Anet nerfs the pets to see how ranger holds up and later decides if the pet should stay nerfed while the rangers receive an overall buff.
…later decides if the pets should be used for damage or utility and adjusts the ranger accordingly.
…later realizes that by nerfind pets, they nerfed the whole class and comes up with something else which will lead to the same 100 complain threads. I suspect the reason they nerf them now is because of the regen ranger.
Torment:
Thiefs get torment, but that doesn’t mean we know if the condition will be a high/low cd skill and how much damage it does.
Sb 900 range:
How many times do you fight at 900-1200 range? I barely find myself keeping that range the whole time. SB5 was good for stopping a runner but tbh a shortbow is not a longbow. All the other skills were buffed, which means there is less loss of dps when using any of the skills.
Longbow:
Aftercast time decreased, which means that the fire rate will go up
(Aftercast time is the time between skill uses)
Path of Scars:
I can think of ways of using it. One of them being: Throw it into the zerg and watch how enemies get pulled right into no man’s land (or the friendly zerg).
hmm….. What do you guys think about a new trait “Evade for 1 (dunno about balance but this can be changed) seconds when immobilized (20s cooldown)”
I don’t wanna be rude, but why did you make this thread if the same suggestion is already written in another one?
This game has built-in mechanics to prevent farming in regular pve.
You are really screwing yourself if you choose to spend hours on regular pve instead of an hour on 3-4 different dungeons and earn a lot of gold and karma, plus the tokens.
The problem is that the grand traits are not powerful enough. There is nothing there that makes me say “Whhhoooa”
That pretty much means “run away when you’re almost dead”.
Not every profession can do this. And they shouldn’t be able to, they got their strengths and weaknesses, we got ours. If it’s just a matter of feeling cool, if the Thief has to run away because ya beat her down to almost nothing, you still won.
’Cept rangers are a stealth-less version of thief
OP, you can go burn in hell too, the whole ‘Thief is broken’ thing is really annoying, especially since the 7 last months.
I haven’t claimed that thief is broken, nor have I said anything negative towards thief so you either have problems and need a psychologist or have misunderstood my thread.
It was created because I wanted to gain knowledge about how glass cannon thief works.
I am coming here as a ranger. I do not have any hate towards thief so don’t read this post negatively.
I’ve read that thief has an easy time going full berserker and still have a lot of survivability with the stealth skills. Some people say that thief has a playstyle where not having skill is rewarded and so on…
The reason to why I am making this thread is because I have thought about making a thief.
What do you give up on, if nothing, to gain good survivability when creating a glass cannon build?
There is a state between underwater and on land in which all your skills are removed (with passives, which means soth doesn’t work on the water surface).
Stalker can be ordered from land to attack an enemy that is underwater and it will swim to it, but the stalker (or any other pet) is stowed when you enter water and get to the middle state.
That middle state is when you swim on the surface of the water.
^^^^^^^^^Is not the answer
There is a bug that uses your stats to calculate damage shown on pet-skill tooltip
Then how about the DPS over 20 / 40 / 60 / 120 seconds?
Someone (or a group) should try to find the most glassy and hardest hitting build for each class and then make comparisons of how fast they can take down a static target.
This has been answered before by devs.
Search “gw2 perma stow pet” on google and you will get many results.
keep soth but replace the others with some survival skills (survival as in it helps you survive, not the type survive)
The problem is that you have good defense, but it’s difficult to regain health
At least think a little and google “gw2 store pet names” and you will have at least 5 results that are exactly like this one.
It would be pretty nice if they made every trait useful and made us give up some for others.
E.g. Should I take empathic bond or Bark skin on bm ranger? How much conditions will I face and how much direct damage?
Should I use 30% pet speed or 30% pet crit damage? 30% speed for catching mesmers or 30% crit damage to take down that guardian faster?
Not that I know of (but I’ve honestly never tested it). From prior experience with the game, I’m under the assumption that a player can only receive one type a buff since every other buff works that way. In other words, if you are within the range of a spirit and receive its initial buff, then any other overlapping spirit buffs simply can’t be obtained as you already have that type of spirit buff from a specific spirit (you can’t obtain 2 frost spirit proc chance buffs at once).
However, maybe if you can move between spirits, you could manipulate the icd of each of them to proc effects twice as often for any spirit but the frost spirit. Obviously, that assumes the icd isn’t linked to your character, but linked to the spirit that gave you the buff, which I doubt is true.
That is correct…. And there is a but.
The spirits have 10sec ICD (except frost) and when the effect procs, the buff the spirit gives (the buff that gives you a chance to proc) will not be applied for 10sec.
Which, theoretically, would mean that a second spirit of the same tipe can apply the buff on the player in those 10sec. The question is if it does exactly that or not.
It stacks according to the rules of boons. Protection and swiftness stack in duration; if you have two frost spirits up, though, you will get (traited) party wide flat 14% damage increase (on average). Also note there’s internal cooldowns on spirits besides frost. I hope that helps! Happy hunting!
I know that the boons stack. I want to know if the internal cooldowns of the spirits are of the type “X seconds left of sun spirit cooldown” or “X seconds left of Y’s sun spirit cooldown”
If there are 2 rangers with stone spirits summoned. Will one of them receive first 3 seconds of protection, and then another 3 seconds from the other one?
If there are 2-3 rangers, or more, with spirit build, will the effects stack?
More precisely, would it be possible to have 100% protection/swiftness up-time?

I’d like to add that I was talking about PvE and not WvW, nor PvP
You can
1.
Get full berserker (power/precision/crit) with glass cannon build with piercing arrows for the ‘aoe’ and maybe slap on Sigil of Fire for some more aoe. You will miss the aoe a trapper offers when you face 20 or so enemies
2.
Get full rampager or carrion for even more cond damage and play with a trapper build. Acquire the trait in skirmishing that makes the traps bigger and the one that doubles their strength. You will miss the high single target damage while roaming in pve.
Basically, killing a group of 5 with zerker gear is slower than trapper, but killing enemies one by one is faster with the zerker gear.
With the zerker gear, you should be able to kill most normal enemies before you/it reaches you while you are running forward.
You can also (I have no experience in this) boost the pet instead.
One thing?
Since no one sees the real problem with pets….
Improve the pet’s pathfinding so that it updates more frequently and does not cause jaggy paths for the pet, this eliminates, amongst many other, the problem with running in circles to avoid pets. This also includes pathfinding around red circles.
Removing the pet will make rangers a warrior class with less armor
Increasing pet’s speed is just a workaround solution.
Reducing AoE damage done is the same… As a plus, it will make some content very easy with a group of rangers.
The one who can use his ranged pet to shield himself xD
Yes, Spirits are useful, no, you can’t use them fully.
I just do 5→4→2→3→1 spam, then use skills as they come of cooldown. This in WvW/PvP btw. Shortbow should stay single-target focused imo, but the poison volley should be changed to an AoE (Like an explosive arrow head) with the size between normal and traited necro marks. The flanking bonus on 1 should be bigger and the 5 skill is just an interrupt with too long CD.
Longbow should have it’s long range damage on lowest range, and about 200 to 300 bonus damage for longest range. Barrage, as it is the only AoE, should have it’s CD reduced by a few seconds.
All is IMO
Amazing find! How did you derive 3000 from the broken pet window?
I’ll add this to the compilation thread!
Assuming we know how much damage will be dealt and how much armor the enemy has;
Let AR (Known) be armor, DMG (Known) be damage dealt and RDMG (raw damage) be damage before armor reduction.
SC – Skill Coefficient (Unknown)
P – Power (Known)
STR – Weapon Strength (Unknown)
We know that the formula for damage is (SC * P * STR) / AR = DMG
We can then move things around:
SC * P * STR = DMG * AR = RDMG → SC * P * STR = RDMG → SC * STR = P * RDMG = Y
Y = SC * STR
We have two unknows. But!
We can solve SC for each skill if we note the damage numbers for different pet attribute stats. When we have found SC for one ability, it is possible to find STR:
STR = Y / SC
Most pet attacks seem to be double strikes. How did you consider this in your coefficients? Did you just combine both in that case?
You multiply it by the amount of hits per attack. In the case of birds its *2.
Not sure if you mean that he has to multiply the number on his own, or that you took it into consideration…
Hard counter would be burst Guardian (more than you’re full HP per burst rotation if she pulls it off), and a stalemate would be regeneration ranger (cleric gear).
The zerker ele killed you because thats how you counter bunkers, you need to spec burst and blow them up..thats also how you counter phantasm member…
My tactic against phantasm is to wait until there are a lot of them and use entangle. As a plus, I always try to place bonfire so that it affects them too.
Rangers are very good against mesmers imo, the pet always smells out which one is the real one.
I bet most thiefs are going to tell you that you most probably have fought only bad thiefs so far. Because the 1vs1 crown is reserved for these guys. And be asured that ANet will “fix” Rangers to keep things “balanced”
I am curious about how they will do that…
I dunno about the 1v1 crown. I will not believe it unless I see the best players of each class fght eachother
