That would be really OP…

Atm with 30 in BM, we can have 15 seconds of quickness, which can be pretty kitten strong if you can CC your enemy.

Ranger viable as a Roamer?

Rangers have a bad reputation in wvw because most of them are using very simple builds.

My “noob” time in wvw was with Knight’s gear and I was dieing a lot so I stopped playing WvW. After some PvE and ‘learning’, I started doing a lot of wvw with a bunker build and it went well because it’s a bunker build. It’s supposed to help you survive. On a side note, the bunker condi (or regen) builds are ‘effective’ because they are mostly no brainers. There isn’t much depth to them.
The build got boring because I WvW’d so much that people started to recognise me and then automatically fled because they either didn’t want to die or fight for 5 minutes.

I slowly changed over to a build that is squishier than Knight’s and simply proves that ranger has a learning curve.

The point is that ranger’s have a special learning curve. The first part is nearly flat and goes up slowly. The second part has and angle near 90 deg, which is steep as hell. The third part is like the first part.

Don’t be a sheep, try everything you can. Try “Evasive Purity” and “Bark skin” even if people say they aren’t worth the trait points. Skill comes mostly with experience and a bit of knowledge. It’s easy to say “Oh you should’ve have used skill X and then skill Y instead of skill Z because so and so” but actually doing it is difficult.

Swap pets -> Field(s) disappear

It is literally impossible to e.g. get a poison cloud down and then swap in a drake and blast it. Same for any other pets. Once one is swapped, it’s fields and projectiles disappear. I.e. no perfect combos are possible with “Paralysing venom” and canine knockdown or by using a pet’s finisher to combo another pets field.

@ OP – Ranger is generally regarded quite highly in all end game aspects as long as you build appropriately for the situation.

Open World & leveling – Easy mode. Pets take aggro, you can roll full glass and pew pew from a distance or facetank in melee since pets will generally take the aggro anyway and you wont take much damage. World bosses/champs – know the fights and swap between range/melee appropriately for the fight. Sit back – get bags.

Dungeons/fractals – Rangers are very useful since they can bring frost spirit/spotter which boosts the whole parties DPS by a significant amount. You also do substantial damage yourself if running the meta dungeon build. Like others have stated though, this build requires full glass (zerker) and a melee setup to be optimal.

sPvP – we are top tier point holders & effective roamers. Almost everyone will have problems dealing with a spirit ranger or BM bunker on point. There have also recently emerged several effective roaming condi spam builds that do great spike damage and pressure other players effectively.

WvW – Depends on what you like to do. If you like small group or roaming, rangers excel at this kind of combat and are a great class for doing this. If you plan on running with a larger group or full on zerg however, other classes tend to be better for that. Zerging is really the only part of the game where rangers are sub par as they do not bring anything beneficial to a zerg. But for a smaller group ( 10 or under ) rangers have a lot of useful tools that can help out in smaller skirmishes.

If you are going to help, please don’t make the ranger seem like the best class there is.
The first line is very misleading, as rangers are the opposite.

You are also encouraging the “Bearbow” playstyle with the “Open world” paragraph.

Anet should implement something called “Step size” into the pet code. Setting “Step size” for e.g. river drake to 1000 would allow it to walk up walls or over them.

This would allow pets like spiders to act like spiders and birds will “walk” over small walls.

F3 should just return pets instantly

A less ‘overpowered’ fix is to make the pet’s return run speed as fast as when you for example leap forward and it quickly runs to you to catch up.

EDIT:
Pets should be able to run down cliffs though. Let them take 50% fall damage, I don’t care, but it’s much better than having it run the scenic route that takes 5-10 seconds.

EDIT 2:
I do actually notice that sometimes when roaming in wvw and jumping down from a cliff, the pet sort of falls too and takes falling damage (sometimes even gets knocked down because of a long fall)

Shortbow to 1000?

Shortbow can already get about 1000 range. When you have to force your auto attack, you’re at about 1k range.

Axe can’t do this reliably, with the exception of Winter’s Bite which I do believe is something of a homing projectile somedays. Love it.

If you’re asking that they normalize this quirk (not having to force the auto at 1kish), eh. I wouldn’t mind. Don’t count on it though. I think it’s that way for a reason.

Increases the range from 900 to 1000 would cause the arrows to fly to under 1100. No normalizations.

I’m suggesting the same kind of change that eagle eye does to longbow, except shortbow would only have it’s basic attack range increased.

Countless times have I accidentaly pressed the wrong button and caused the browser to go to a different page. Just as many times have I pressed the “Post reply” button just to have it not work and have the reply gone forever.

More than half of those replies were long and well-written replies that worked on for at least 10 minutes.

If anyone is typing a reply and, say, accidentally closes the browser, (s)he should be able to come back to the same page and see the reply that was written before appear in the reply text field.

That axe skill sounds very OP tbh.

For shortbow, not all skills would need an increase. Increasing the ranger on the basic attack would be enough. The problem is that shortbow is like a toy bow atm, which shoots with barely any power. Even though it’s good, the range is just so small that most people can use one leap to get away.

You can combo it with winter’s bite, but it is difficult to do.
Throw torch, then Winter’s bite and swap BEFORE either of them hits. Can be nice sometimes if you succeed because some people don’t expect you to be able to swap back.

Also solrik, it is my version of the regen bunker that I am just showcasing for others, I like to look back at the great fights that i’ve had and when I throw my own little tricks into an already fun way to play a class these videos are the result, I know many people play it but im giving an insight on my playstyle because not only for rangers but ANY class: you can copy a build, but you can never copy someones playstyle.

I don’t want to be a total kitten, but there is no playstyle to it.
You did some really stupid things, like walking through the guardians fire field and got burned multiple times. Also failed to the guardian bubble multiple times.

Some improvements can be done on some of the skills. Splitblade; cast it only at point blank range, otherwise it’s a waste. Monarch’s Leap; try to combo it with your fire field, it is worth doing it. Lightning Ref.; use it to stun break, never to evade after a stun. Hornet Sting; use it if you need to heal up. Use the skill, heal, then go back in with Monarch’s Leap.

Even though it didn’t matter much in the video, try to focus the less mobile enemies. Focusing the most mobile one(s) will make you run around the place and deal less damage.

Either way, you won those fights, which means that you were better than your enemies. (I’m just opening my hands and sharing, not trying to put you down!)

All-in-all good job.

Some drastic changes you can do (which I always wanted to try out but there was noone to do it with) is to synergise with your friend so you can combo eachother and in turn deal more damage.

Confusion vs Damage;
It depends on who you are fighting. Many don’t even care about having confusion stacks on them and will keep using their abilities. I for example always stop attacking with high confusion stacks.

Lightning Breath can be amazing when fighting against mesmers/necros, if it hits.

Pets imo should have swap effects by default.

E.g. (just random thinking)
Bears clear 2 conditions when swapped in
Wolves give swiftness when swapped in
Spiders give aegis…
Birds give fury
Drakes give protection
Etc.

How to counter phantasm mesmer

Running around in WvW, killing people etc etc… then a mesmer comes.

“Hmm this should go well”
It does, I get him to 10% hp, but then he stealths and reappears with full health.
“Okay, I can do it again, he can’t heal that fast”
He does, he goes into stealth and comes back with almost full HP

Ends with me dieing every time against these mesmers because we both get to low HP but then they use something and get back to AT LEAST 75% hp just before dieing.

How can they be countered?
They spam phantasms, go stealth multiple times and spam their blurred frenzy

Longbow Point Blank Shot bug

The skill has a cast time of 1/2 second.

That should allow me to start casting while having my back turned to the enemy and then turn around just before releasing the shot. This is not the case, as the skill just goes on a 3 seconds cooldown.

I don’t care who is on the leaderboards. I’ve never heard of “oidmetala” but looking at his messages, he’s just complaining and complaining and complaining about rangers.

Most skilled tpvp players can just tell that your build sucks by looking at it if it’s tpvp build. Matter of experience.

The thing is, Tpvp has roles to fulfill and builds have to be adjusted to do exact things.
The game hasn’t really changed over 2 years. Many have just already tested possibilities. New “meta” builds in MMOs come up after an average of week, sometimes less.

As for higher ranked players – Many of them are the biggest complainers. Best example would be Helseth. He’s ranting and ragequitting all the time, but nobody can say that he’s not a beast Mesmer.

I can understand it if it’s “if it’s tpvp” but he just threw out a lot of assumptions. Some people from tpvp think that skilled WvW’ers are total idiots and vice versa.

It’s okay to talk about tpvp, but the op didn’t write that the thread is exclusively about tpvp or spvp.

Oh and the thing about 1-h sword doing most damage. That comes from PvE, where one is able to just 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 the enemy creatures. DPS goes down once you start evading and using the awesome combo of 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 on a real enemy is the same as writing “I’m a free kill” in chat.

F2 skills responsiveness

The main problem is pet is still way too slow to move, when you press F2 the pet can;t use it until it is in range and it is so slow it rarely gets used. Add kiting targets and we are back where we always have been, PET=Useless

Not really. It’s often, if not always, possible to force the enemy to kite where you want him to kite. You can also disable the enemy and chain into the pet’s F2

My bearbow build is excellent for that since Read the Wind. These guys are either uninitiated or thinking about PvE / sPvP meta. It’s not a build for sPvP nor PvE. It’s a WvW build which works best in group combat. I wouldn’t advise 1v1 with it, but it’s not impossible and it has excellent escape options.

Also, you could go 6/0/2/6/0 with Survival of the Fittest, but I really don’t see the point in doing so when you’re playing WvW in a group. You’ll have less damage, less stealth, less barrage, less knockback and less rapid fire.

Sorry if I’m not initiated into the generic bearbow club but your build is just bad. Like I said before, this kind of terrible zerk ranger build is why rangers are laughed at and targeted

You are also using 2 on crit sigils on the same weapon, and 2 on swap sigils on the same weapon. These will not stack, you can only get the benefit of 1 of them.

On top of that, suggesting he leaves his pet on passive is seriously crippling his damage output. A good chunk of a rangers damage comes from the pet, if you want to run around as a zerk without a pet then reroll as a war or thief, you’ll do a lot more damage.

They do stack. Seems like you missed the last big update!

Maybe stop trolling and be serious.

It works best in group combat because you can just sit back and pew-pew from afar, which is stopped when someone starts to attack you and the others realise that you’re a squishy ranger that can’t do anything because you have two signets (which is visible to them) and a bear which is the same as a big sign that reads “I HAVE ‘PROTECT ME’” all over it.

LB + GS requires skill to be played well. There are at least ten different combos which let you toss your enemy around and some of them allow you to stun them for over 10 seconds. The pets and skills you chose are horrible for the purpose given.

I am sorry to say this, but you are a bearbow. It’s bad, because it’s the same as a braindead hambow except that hambows actually contribute.

Also, if you’re using an “Offensive” F2 (or a brown bear for some reason), then you’ll also have to wait for the pet to get into range (unless you have no target then it’ll fire it off right there)

That is sorta fixed if you press the F2 button a few times.

E.g. when fleeing, I usually make my wolf run towards the enemies a little so that they get just in range of the fear, then I can press F2 very quickly about 3-5 times (or just drop target and press once).

Pets of the same family share the CD of every skill, except F2.

Jungle Spider and Black Widow share their F2 skill in addition to their other skills because they are identical.

I’m killing people with LB and GS in wvw and I’ve been told that it sucks because, well, it just sucks without any reasoning.

I’ve also played with GS and Sword + Dagger (or torch) on a condition build with traps and have been told the same when they asked what build it is.

I’ve played with Axe + Dagger on a power build and that sucked too.

The point is, that some people might tell you different things. Most on the forums just complain about rangers, so no point in listening to them. Those three builds are viable, because people were conceived. For the first, second and third, they thought I was a Bearbow, Melee power glass and Condition build.

Then there are the very skilled players. There can be very skilled thieves, so good that they literally evade every one of your skills other than the basic one.

One you might want to listen to is Durzlla because you will surely get an unbiased answer.

I’ve noticed that playing different against real players is part of the key to success because it’s something unexpected. Ranger Hilt-Bash is almost always followed by Maul.

There are also some combos which you can do with your pets. For example, the jungle spider has a family skill that immobilises and a special (F2) skill that immobilises too which can be chained almost always. Pets have a pattern, which tells them when to use their skills.

For melee “alone”, i.e. without any other factor playing a role, you can do different things. Make sure you can use your heal by leaping away from your enemy, heal, then leap back into the fight. There is just enough time for that. #3 and #4 are both evades and apply poison, so you can play with that.

On GS, you can double evade by turning away from the enemy while casting the third attack. It’s easy to do with NPC’s but it’s difficult with real players. It pays off to do so, though.

TL;DR
Durzlla will probably give you a good answer.
I would say that a ranger is as squishy as the player makes it. A top tier skilled glass thief “isn’t” as squishy as someone who only played a week. Same goes for any other class (except warrior maybe )

If I succesfully predict when the thief is going to attempt backstabing and I evade him then I’ts unfair that he can just keep trying again and again until his stealth runs out.

I have no problems with stealth itself. The problem is that using a skill that gets evaded doesn’t break it.

- Rangers need a big damage output boost. We’re talking 25% plus at least. We need to be feared, especially at range. Right now we are worse than a standard arrow cart.

I though sword sucked until I gave it a chance. My exact problem was the rooting.

What did I do? I deactivated the auto-attack on the first skill.
It really is a learn to play issue. Ever since I deactivated the auto-attack, I’ve never been frustrated at not being able to dodge or use other skills.

Don’t come with the argument that you, for some smart reason, can’t spam the 1 key, because you really don’t have to.
First, you will barely ever use sword 1 in pvp because the weapons will mostly serve as a dodge/escape weapon, meaning that you will most likely use #2, #3 and offhand.
Second, having it on auto makes you stick to your target and all you have to do is hold W and have the camera turned towards your target. When not having it on auto, the extra you have to do is press #1 key in a rythm. That’s not difficult, is it?

Rapid Fire doesn't make sense

I’d rather have rapid fire changed to shooting 10 arrows at once. At close range (withing 600) almost every arrow would reliably hit the enemy with maybe 1 or 2 missing the target. At long range, like 1200, only half of them would hit. The twist would be the skill’s damage. It’s a huge burst with low CD which punishes ANYONE that comes close to the ranger. Compared to Rapid Fire, it would deal just as much at 1k to 1.2k range, but almost double at point blank range. The skill would have around 1s cast time.

I’d also welcome Barrage changed to a chargeable skill that shoots a highly explosive arrow that deals massive damage. The more it’s charged the more tells it has.
A fully charged shot would release a big glowing arrow (the fuse is burning) that arcs like thief SB#2

Or instead of read the wind, we would get something like “Bow mastery” or “Archery expertise” that allows rangers to move in any direction without any penalty but directions that otherwise have a penalty without the trait wouldn’t be affected by any other movement speed modifier.

hello, im a bit new to guild wars 2 and i wanted to ask, does it matter which race you choose with ranger? and what would be good stats and stuff if i do ranger?

It doesn’t matter at all gameplay wise.

Though I must say that I rarely see any charr rangers. So if you don’t mind, being a charr ranger would be pretty awesome. I always wanted to have a ranger charr but I don’t have the time (plus it’s boring to redo everything) to make one.

The huge advantage of being able to leap out and then leap back is that you have just enough time to leap out, heal (or use a skill) and then leap in. There is very little chance to be interrupted

It is obvious you meant distance, which is why you were wrong.

Hunting with a bow and spear does have history, in fact it’s still done today. Maybe not spears so much. This still has nothing to do with the meaning of Ranger, nor what they are about. MMOs have a tendency of putting a lot, not just bows, in the hands of Rangers. This includes dual wielding, leather armor, pets, healing and nature magic, survival skills. No one thing is the key to a Ranger, rather, it is the whole combined. Sorites paradox aside, if you take away each of the parts until you are only left with a bow you will not have a Ranger, but an Archer.

Now if you’re looking for improved arguments I recommend you look at your own, because nothing you have provided here has been meaningful nor valid.

Actually, if you want an etymology lesson then the word Range comes from the actual meaning of Range, which is to travel far. Someone would say a target is ranging, which would become at range, meaning out there in the distance, traveling far. It has nothing to do with hunting. Nor for that matter does Ranging have to do with hunting specifically. Someone who is Ranging could be hunting, or scouting, or exploring. A Ranger is far more likely to use traps to get meat than to shoot things with a bow, though a bow and axe would classically be the combat oriented equipment some who was Ranging would bring with them. No one chases a rabbit, because that’s stupid. Equally stupid is trying to shoot a rabbit with a bow, when you can just trap them in a snare.

So again, Range in Ranger has nothing to do with long distance combat.

This has nothing to do with etymology because words are adapted to the current time. I won’t call you g** (homosexual) and then justify it by saying that the word was used as ‘happy’ is used in the current time.

Please, don’t attempt to pick on single words because it is fairly obvious that by range I meant distance.

Hunting for food with a bow (and spear) has an extensive history. MMO’s also have a history of calling the archer/bow class as the “Ranger”.

Anyway, please come with a real argument instead of picking on my wording and/or examples.

You understand that the Range in Ranger has nothing even remotely to do with ranged weapons, right? To Range is to wander hither and yon. It means to go on extended excursions. A Ranger is a person who travels the wilds for a living, not a person who shoots a great distance. So, not sure what to tell you.

If a ranger is a person who travels the wilds for a living then it means that the ranger is hunting and I don’t think anyone would try running after a rabbit/deer/bear and then kill them with a sword or greatsword. That is where RANGE comes in. A ranger needs to be very skilled in ranged weapons in order to hunt game because running after a rabbit with a sword in hand or trying to sneak up on a bird with a greatsword is no fun.

Allowing the game to read arbitrary data from a text file is almost like opening a website to a SQL-injection attack. Yes you can allow it and still prevent exploits if you’re very careful about how you implement it. But the risk if you get it wrong is so great you’re better off just not doing it in the first place.

That is just full of crap.
If you have a text file and read it as a text file, then you make space for a string or array of characters.

There was no reason for you to say “NO THAT WON’T WORK” and the ultimate example is not even close to this. Anet obviously have their encryption algorithm so you could obviously have figured out they would be able to use it.

The only good part in that video was the last fight.
You did something that many don’t.
It wasn’t good because you died to 2 enemies, but because you used the terrain to your advantage and it was a WAY more skilled fight than any of the others. You obviously died because you were outnumbered, not because of lacking skill.

Watching someone “Pew-pew” people to death is not fun and makes you appear like an attention seeker. “Ooh look at me n my skillz, i kill many peeple”, no, that is not good. Show some deaths and both you and your viewers can learn about Ranger.

Putting up videos without deaths is like making one in a million trickshots and then saying you did them on the first try.

Condition damage works without crit. I don’t even know why ‘critical hit’ exists in these kind of games as a probability.

Man.. you must hate RPGs

This is an MMO, not an action RPG like Diablo. Defensive skills shouldn’t have a chance to work in an MMO, imo. Offensive skills are completely different and I don’t mind it too much.

Take Ele Aura’s for example. Would you cast any of them if they each only had a 15% chance to proc when struck?

I understand what you mean, it’s just that your example is a bit off because most MMOs actually have RNG systems.

Imo not even crit chance should be rng. If you have 50% crit chance, then every other attack should ALWAYS be a critical hit.
