I think many of us saw the image of the ring posted, and assumed there would also be a power ring, and a precision ring, a healing ring, etc. But what if there isn’t?
What if the ring shown, was the only ring? It’s stats base lined for running dungeons? Putting everyone on a plateau that they can design pve dungeons around. Modifying variable being your infusion, and whatever weapons you happen to take along. Sure, I could equip my higher DPS ring, but agony would down me. Again, now I am at a plateau that they can design the dungeon around.Thoughts?
Unlikely. All the condition based builds would be raging even more if they decided to do something that dumb. We need more gear stat variety, not less and certainly not everyone using MF/Power/Precision XD
I like Norn tier 2 more than Human tier 3 for medium female armor. For human cultural, tier 3 light is definitely my favorite for female. What armor set from Malchor are you referring to? This one – http://www.gw2armor.com/norn/female/k5/medium/display_looks.php? Not all heavy armor is ugly. The gladiator’s, barbaric and draconic are decent IMO – again this is for female characters. Most male character armors look decent.
Tastes :p Well I’d love to try the norn tier 2 on my human, that naked glitch must have been hilarous but it’s patched now and won’t work ^^
The light human T3 is nice yes but I think it’s not nice enough above winged to justify 120g price point.
The karma armor skin I talked about is exactly that one you linked. You can get it from the Cursed Shores map too but in level 80 so more expensive to transmute if you don’t place it on a level 80 item.
Well, while you may do dungeons in rare level armor, I think at some point you’re gonna need exotics to progress further in the fractals.
The new ring drops from the first level already. Why the need to progress further?
Just for curiosity sake, do you know when an entire set of ascended will be available?
Do you know if the next release will add boots, or gloves or earrings? No? Neither do I which is why I don’t want to buy any of those and get shafted after.
Do you know what stat combinations will and wont be available?
I didn’t think of that one. Another reason to wait and see.
Do you know what the bonuses for infusion gems are and if they make up for the lack of stack flexibility and effects Ascended inherently has?
How do you know that the ascended armors won’t have access to runes or rune like effects? The weapons?
I really don’t think you do.
I’m just amazed that as deep as the system goes and with all of the moving pieces you can tweak and adjust to fine-tune a character, some players get tunnel vision on a bigger number and never mind that the penalty is holding back other options and potential.
Uncertainty is the problem. I’m not using more than half my money to buy a new exotic set when I’m not sure what the future will hold at all. If the ascended necklace only comes in 6 months, I might consider paying the full price for them today. But what if they come on the next update in two weeks?
The amount of rage here is proportional to how much people feel betrayed. The bigger they are, the harder they fall :o
I already have two exotic chest pieces to keep me warm and angry until that time, don’t worry. My alts on the other hand will have to do with rares at best if I even care to raise them to 80.
Why would exotics not be worth it from whenever until now? Two hours of playing gets you the financial cost of an exotic armor piece. Every piece of exotic armor was max until now, will still be max for at least another month, and will be max potentially for several months (without going off into full speculation mode – think about the likelihood that there will be full ascended armor sets in December).
If you want to say crafting an exotic ring today isn’t worth it, yeah, I may agree with that (depends on what it takes to get the ascended ring with the stats you want). Everything else? Sure it was worth it. You played from whenever you crafted to now with exotics. You’re going to have time to play in that exotic gear now and in the future, and you can craft exactly the stats you want (within the game’s normal attribute combinations).
I guess you can sit on your bank account and say to yourself “man, thank the Fantabulous Sky Kitten that I have a few more gold coins in there!” I mean if that’s your thing, cool. To act like every piece of exotic gear is worthless now is a bit overboard, or that you somehow didn’t use that gear when you were playing. Exotic gear is still top tier for all the armor and half the accessories even when ascended first gets introduced.
Are you even thinking or not? I got better plans for my gold than buying obsolete exotics. Mainly, it’s buying stuff like T3 cultural gear, stuffing alts, getting alternate stat sets for alternate builds and saving for one day getting my own legendary.
Every piece of exotic now is worthless. I wouldn’t pay more than 50s for them now.
Why you people want all the best things now?
Why pay a premium for a marginal stat increase? Which goes back to the topic : are exotics worth it? Why pay a premium for a marginal stat increase unless you get the best possible item for that slot? Answer : no they aren’t worth it unless Ascended items don’t exist.
If you buy with gold, sure. But my 80s mostly wear gear they got for “free.”
Nothing is free. And in all cases you cannot get exotic jewelry without paying 2.5g piece which adds up to 12-13g in total, unless you use a LOT of WvWvW badges.
1.5 to 10g for the cheap ones. If you want more then 1,000 weapon damage it’s more.
I’m talking about a full set. 2 weapons, 6 armor parts, 2 rings, 2 earrings and 1 necklace.
You cannot get exotic jewelry for less than 2.5g piece. You might be able to get some under level 80 exotic armor for less than 2g each though. Not sure about weapons now.
Running in Rare gear means you have Major sigils/runes. Take into consideration the Exotic stat difference in addition to the Superior Sigils/runes you’re missing out on.
My masterworks backpiece with exotic jewel disagrees.
Buy a cheap one and and a good upgrade item.
What? XD The 25-30g price tag was for the cheapest exotics one can buy.
In the case of UO, you have to somewhat define “saved”.
The game died with the world split. It may have limped on, but the soul was gone and so were most players anyways. I’d argue that not implementing that change could have benefited them more in the long run, as it would have been the single largest factor setting UO up as an alternate MMO experience to EQ.
With the world split, they simply tried to attract the same players who would look towards EQ anyways.
The problem with homogenizing your game is that if you can’t offer a different experience, you must offer a superior experience. There was no way UO could “out-EQ at being EQ” just as there is no way current or recent mmos can “out-WoW at being WoW”.
I believe that this example is absolutely relevant to the current discussion in this thread regarding the ascended gear and potential decisions facing GW2 devs.
Well, the two examples you gave are kind of interesting because I do believe the NGE case to be a failure, and the UO case to be a success although some people won’t see it. At the time UO existed, there was no room for a full gank MMO alone to compete against a theme park MMO. The market was far too small to sustain the gank MMO with only players that like this kind of game. The only reason UO worked pre Trammel as it was was because there was no other game to turn to so people would deal with it.
Nowadays, with Internet more common and all that, I do believe they could rerelease the exact same game with redone graphics and easily get enough subscriptions to sustain it. But in my opinion, the feeling of UO will never be possible again. A game populated exclusively with gank oriented players has a definitively different feeling that a game where every single MMO player in the world participates. If you somehow manage to get the themepark players to stick around by some divine intervention XD
Well, the update is also 200 new craft formulas and a brand new map to explore, exploit and exterminate.
It will take more time and you will die more. Besides exotics are cheap.
At around 25-30g for a full set of exotics, no they aren’t.
It’s hard to get legendaries with no exotics. And, it will be hard to get ascended items with no exotics. So it is worth it to get exotics.
Baseless speculation. If you can get ascended items with an exotic MF set, you can get them with a non MF rare set.
Who played Star Wars Galaxies or Ultima Online still remembers the day when they patched in the changes that would ruin the game forever.
Star Wars Galaxy got ruined. Ultima Online got saved by the changes. The game would have plain be closed a lot earlier without them. As said Origin at the time, either they gave Trammel to the players for them to move to, or they’d all move to Everquest which they were already doing massively.
Aw, what rarity items below exotic look good? :O jw
Considering how ugly the crafted exotic sets are (especially the weapons and medium armor), is it that important?
The best looking medium armor in the game is the rare T3 human cultural weapon btw. Rare quality. Also, if you don’t get level 80 exotics, aim for level 79 or slightly lower rares instead. You can reskin those with the cheaper stones. As for armor sets, the best looking while still incredibly cheap one can get (in my opinion) is the karma bought level 79 medium armor set from that Malchor thing map :p In light armor it’s the crafted winged set and heavy armor is all ugly :o
And that’s only after fully upgrading every slot from exotic to ascended. So for every 1000 damage you do in Exotic you now do 1050. Man… That’s way over the top! And I am almost positive the conversion isn’t a direct 1:1 ratio. I’m sure theory craters have already proven that point but if you want to yourself go to the mist and get one of the basic pvp weapons and compare that to the actual weapons. It’s not going to be what you think it is.
5% more attack. But don’t forget those items have 3 stats. Berserker gear has Power/Precision and Crit Damage. 5% more attack, 5 more crit chance and like, 20 more crit damage%. All that together and you end up with quite more than 5% DPS increase wouldn’t you say?
that actually reinforces the grind argument: 1300 relics and it’s not even ascended?
And it got worse stats than EVERY exotic 80 item in the game currently. Your point is? We don’t know what this item is at all.
You carefully edited out the part where I mentioned we don’t really know how many relics per run we’ll really get in the first place.
You know they’re only adding Backpacks and Rings starting off?
Next month, they’ll add another two. Will it be the earrings and necklace? Maybe the first pair of gloves and boots? Will you buy any exotic item at all before you know that?
What we know is that sooner or later, we’ll be able to get a full set of ascended items. Why get any exotics for stats if you don’t want their looks and you know you’ll replace them in the short term?
The difficulty will increase constantly, and is determined by the LOWEST common level of difficulty. 4/5 guys can be at level 15 difficulty, but 1 at level 2, the dungeon will then be at level 2. This means you will NEED lower level people for efficiency. You can’t just toggle the difficulty, its based on the a common level achieved. If you entire group is at level 15, the difficulty will be 15, and if you can’t progress, you have no choice but to take lower level people.
Actually, if you read the preview linked earlier, you’ll see you can select the difficulty freely as long as you don’t put it higher than any player in your group unlocked.
So horribly disappointing. Like being offerec a huge plate of warm cookies (the patch) with a huge, nasty long hair (ascended gear) lying right in the middle of it.
Note: Lying IS the word I meant to use even though laying is grammatically correct.. it just seemed so right in this case.
Let’s keep matters in perspective here.
- that 1300 relic item is exotic, not ascended
- we don’t even know what this item is for in the first place
- we aren’t sure that you’ll only get 5 tokens per fractal at the higher difficulties, not mentioning even at the lowest one because things can change between the time that preview was written and release, and after release
Exotics are just something for you to work towards. They aren’t that big of an upgrade over Rares.
And now they are a useless step on the way from Rare to maxed stat gear.
You see, that’s where the problem most people are imagining. 8% more power isn’t going to make you do 8% more damage. I you increase your go from rare to Exotic you will notice a very minor increase in overall effectiveness.
I said that 8% more power from gear, along with a theorical 8% more damage range on weapon would give you in total, counting a fully traited power stat and base stats an attack increase of 5%
The attack I mean is the stat shown in your Hero panel. The damage you do is directly proportional to that stat. If you get 5% more attack, you are doing 5% more damage on all your attacks plain and simple (not counting crits obviously)
>> im done this thread is out of control…. blind hate everywhere. Theres a few clear minded folks here that aren’t blindly freaking out over everything so thanks for those debates. As to the rest of you calling AN a sleazy company and raging about everything and how your quitting….. really use your eyes go read, better yet read and actually understand what it is your reading. Then calm yourself.
What I read is clear. Baring some completely unannounced way to make use of my exotic jewelry, I’m down 15g per set of pure wastage. With two sets and my current savings, I’d already be sporting two T3 parts by now if I had knew.
But it can still be saved, just announce ONE thing that says that my exotic gear is worth more than salvage value (and NPC sell value for the jewelry obviously) and I’ll go from disgusted to grumbling about the extra grind added between me and my T3 set and Legendary weapon.
(edited by Moderator)
I got mine for stats first and was in the process of farming some final skin to put in them. If I had knew, I’d be playing with rares only.
Also, the exotic ring, amulet and earrings are obviously for stats only.
Let’s keep in mind those costs were for Exotic quality gear that has built in upgrades instead of slots.
Does anyone think Ascended gear will be the same cost?
Those items showed are weird. They are worthless cause the stats suck compared to any exotic 80 item one can get already.
Unless they are back pieces or items to socket into jewelry. They might be back pieces if you compare them to the ascended one showed earlier. They’d end up being a precursor for the Mystic Forge then?
It says, chest at end gives 5 per fractal. Nowhere does it state anymore. every 3 fractals will increase the difficulty one level.
I’ll just assume the journalists that wrote that are clueless and forgot to check if the relic rewards stay the same when you increase difficulty.
Considering you get a fixed 5 relics per individual fractal, you really think people will want to constantly run the hardest difficulty? A majority of players will go for the quickest and easiest route, as those relics are used to obtain the Ascended gear in the first place. The LFM argument will in turn be opposite of what you claim, people will look for minimum difficulty.
Where does it say it’s fixed at 5 relics per fractal no matter the difficulty? It would make for some insane grind to get those 1300 relic items.
Heck, what the hell are those items in the first place? They got weaker stats than all existing jewelry as far as I see so who would want those? Or maybe they are upgrade components to put in jewelry?
Wow that sounds like Diablo 3. Run same stuff over and over on harder and harder difficulty to get better loot so you can do next level.
Technically in Diablo III, since they added the Monster Power thing, you’d usually run the lowest monster power possible (0 or 1 depending on which act you plan to farm) to get better gear because it’s more effective.
Exactly. And 8% is only for the secondary attributes since the ring we know is a MF ring, as I already said. For a full ascended set with power as a primary attribute, the difference will be higher, which will also increase the overall (including traits and base stats) difference.
No, it’s likely the 8% will also apply to the main stat. It’s just that you start from more so numerically you get a bigger increase but relatively it’ll probably still be 8%
You can still play how you want…. You don’t even need Ascended gear if you don’t want it as it isn’t the most beneficial tier, no upgrades means your shoehorned into what stats they give you… you can still achieve your goals anyway you want…. and your still not excluded from content…. you can do all 9 Fractals without needing Ascended gear. I don’t see what content you are then missing out on.
The only example given was plain better in ALL situations than the exotic ring. We don’t know how the ascended armors will work for runes yet. As far as we know, they might very well have both a rune and an infusion slot. Or you’ll merge the rune and the infusion together in the mystic forge first. Or, or …
If you try to tell me you cannot make a set of berserk jewelry with knight jewels, I’ll retort that you can get the same effect for cheaper by using 2 rings and one amulet of berserk type + two earrings of knight type.

can someone explain me, why should i even try crafting exotic armor if i would have to grind for ascended one?
The same reason you would grind for greens before you get exotic in my eyes.
The fact that the armour will last you at the very least a month, if not 2 or 3 or more before ascended gear is introduced to replace a whole set…
I’ve been farming for 2-3 months now to get some T3 and the correct exotic set. I had already achieved one OK exotic set and one MF and now I’m nearly to the point I could get one piece of the T3 set, the most expensive one.
I don’t need a stupid armor that lasts me a month or two only and costs me as much as one T3 part. I need that money for the later. And for the legendaries after. And the set swaps for different builds.
T3 is and always has been purely cosmetic, why does it matter? You can apply it to your gear as and when you replace it.
Your stat specific Exotics will aid you in clearing new content to get the replacement parts when they are released, which is on an entirely unspecified time scale.
If your planning on doing a Legendary grind, none of these changes affect you, just carry on, it will scale anyway?
Of course those changes affect me. Legendary is only the weapon and limited to two per char also. Ascended is the whole set and I doubt we’ll be seeing invisible legendary rings one day or another.
So, to remain at top performance, I’d need to regrind a whole armor and jewelry set on top of farming for a legendary weapon or two.
My stat specifics exotics might help in clearing content, but how many people here are saying that Ascended stat boost is minor and completely negligible? Then the stat boost from rare to exotic is too. I’d get a bigger time saving from my goal of T3 armor by not buying exotics and sticking with rares until I get max stat Ascended to replace them.
Basically, and I might be wrong but no matter, I got that exotic MF set I’m pissed of I need to replace with ascended MF and I’m down by the 25g more or less it cost me. I got that “karma armor/crafted jewelry/dungeon weapons” I’m very pissed of I’m out of 250k karma, 15g and how many tokens it cost for the dungeon weapons and I need to replace to remain at top performance. Please note that one of those two sets ARE entirely optional, even if as you said my exotic sets would help in farming the ascended version, only one is required for that task.
I specifically pushed back my the cultural T3 goal back a little to get a set with better stats (better than MF) for WvWvW and dungeons because, what the heck! It’s the best stats ever in the game and I’ll need to buy them after I get the T3, or before it doesn’t matter. How wrong I was :/ It was last week you know.
Ah, yeah base stats :o Yes I know the 8% more isn’t from the stats on the Hero page but from adding all values by hand.
In a Berserk gear set, you get around 3100 attack. 300 of those from traits, 900 from base stats, leaving 1900 from gear power and weapon average damage. 8% more of that is 150 more attack which is in the end a 5% increase on raw damage you inflict. Add in the increase in crit chance and crit damage and I stand my ground when I say you can very well expect an ascended berserk player to outdamage an exotic berserk player by between 10% and 20% :p
can someone explain me, why should i even try crafting exotic armor if i would have to grind for ascended one?

no you are wrong
this would be true if your stats would be obtainable only from gearbut you get base stats and stats from traits thats go above 1k
5 more power is nothing in this case
Traits give max 300 in a stat. how can you get 1k from them? XD
And it’s not 5 more power. You got two fingers, it’s 10 more power. And 10 more precision. And you’d not be using MF gear in WvWvW anyway so it’s more crit damage and even more power (if using ruby/berserker). And you’ll get soon a full set of ascended gear to equip so it’ll not be just 10 for two rings but 80 for 2 rings, 2 earrings, one amulet, 6 armors and 2 weapons. And the two weapons will have a bigger average damage too so even more attack.
(edited by stof.9341)

The same reason you would grind for greens before you get exotic in my eyes.
The green and rare items value at level max or close to it isn’t diminished by the “soul bond” status. Green value is more or less plain NPC sale value, and at worse mystic forge fooder. Rare value is tightly linked to the ecto value itsemf so unneeded yellows just get the salvaging kit treatment and you recoup their value back.
Now, let’s talk about the 2-3g piece exotics that salvage to maybe 3-4 ectos if you are lucky XD
In an MMO like WoW
But GW2 wasn’t supposed to be a MMO like WoW XD
yes thats true
but these ppl spreading wrong info that your character will be 8%-46% stronger in ascended gear than exotics
Technically, let’s assume (yes assume, bear with me) that you get 8% more stats on the stuff. Some glass canon thief upgrades his berserker gear to ascended berserker.
8% more power means more damage per it
8% more precision means more hits will crit
and more crit damage means those crits hurt more
Sooo, it’s perfectly possible that 8% more on three stats means in the end that you’ll receive 20% more damage on average from this player
Except.. you know… this was already the case. Exotic already had more power than rare, which had more power than masterwork.
Except.. you know… this was already the case. Exotic already had more power than rare, which had more power than masterwork.Where were you all at the start of the game, when this clearly wasn’t an issue?
But now, when they decided.. Exotic gear is too easy to get, we need a new tier to properly set the barrier for the people to get the maximum stats. Everyone is up in arms about it.
- Everyone that spent some efforts getting a rare knew perfectly well he wasn’t getting the best but only some “temporary” gear. People that spent some efforts for pre Ascended announcement exotics got shafted
- Except for jewelry, every single level 74+ rare can be refunded practically at 100% by making ectos out of it once you are done with it. The market value of those rares is pretty close to the expected return on salvaging them. As a result, spending money to gear up in temporary rares is an extremely efficient use of your gold. Doing the same for temporary exotics on the other hand …
Thread on Reddit http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/138h4w/account_terminated_for_gold_selling/
As most of you probably know, Dulfy has been an incredible asset to the community, and receives gifts regularly in game for her amazing guides. To ban her a few days before Lost Shores so that she misses it all is quite frankly disgusting.
Your ban sweep criteria is hurting your playerbase more than the bots. Sort it out please.
She received gifts ingame? How much we bet someone bought gold and had it delivered to her directly? :p
Sigh. These are the rings we know of so far:
https://d2vn94glaxzkz3.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Ascended-EN.png
Primary attribute here is MF, secondaries are power and precision.Exotic combined stats:
7% MF
63 power
63 precisionAscended combined stats:
10% MF
68 power
68 precisionThat’s a 43% increase on the primary attribute and an 8% increase on the secondaries.
There’s a 10% to 20% step between other rarities:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Item#QualityGo figure what that means for a full ascended set compared to an exotic set.
Oh man, going from 3000 power to 3005 power is such a game breaker. +8% of 3000 is 240. If I got 8% more power, then I would be at 3240 power, but this item is giving me 3005 power total. Yes, going from 63 to 68 is 8% difference, but OVERALL, its very small.
If you all get owned in WvW by someone who has 5 more power than you, you’re doing it wrong.
There are many things wrong in this post. Let’s start from the start :
- you do not have 3000 power. Maybe 3000 attack though
- you can equip two rings
- the Ruby equivalent ring is bound to have more than a 5 power increase since it’s the main stat and the example we were given it was a secondary stat
- the power increase will be effective on ALL your gear so it adds up
- the ascended weapon will not only have more power, it’ll also have more damage in base so it’ll increase your total attack by even more
If I had new about ascended stuff, I’d have been using exclusively rares which can more or less be salvaged into ectos for the same value you buy them. IE, gearing in 80 rares isn’t something that causes you to “lose” money into temporary gear.
Gearing for 80 exotics on the other hand is a net money (and time, and fun) loss. Especially considering all the level 80 exotic crafts are kitten ugly, especially the weapons.
There´s one flaw in your philosphy about only farming for looks though. Imagine a new dungeon coming out. Only new looks on the dungeon sets, not better stats. 50% of the player base likes the looks, 50% hate them. What incentive do the 50% that hate the looks of the new armor have to do the content?
Around the same motivation that I have doing dungeons where I don’t want the gear at the end : they are fun to do.
And I have to ask another thing, is doing a dungeon once considered grinding?
There’s very little ways to please me with that mess. If I knew I could get some ring better than any exotics I bought for just a single dungeon run, I for sure would NEVER have put 2.5g to buy one. And I bought 4 XD 2 different sets, 2 rings each.
Wouldn’t you be pissed of if you just bought 10g worth of uselessness? But wait, it’s even better ! ArenaNet promised that soon enough, the rest of my jewelry will ALSO become as obsolete. So we are looking at 25g in total of planed uselessness. There’s still a tiiiny hope that the armor and weapon sets I bought won’t be 100% useless on the spot if you really cannot put runes of sigils in the ascended ones which I doubt.
The silence from Anet tells me more and more that I can’t trust this Anet. So if I can’t trust them to keep their word, than why would I trust them with my money.
I can’t imagine this massive, almost entirely unanimous feedback thread had no influence on them at all, that’s why I’m still waiting with my refund request.
Well, this is the kind of messages one can find on ArenaNet’s twitters if you know where to look :
“In response to your article, as much as I wish you were right, most of the time the screaming angry mob is what gets heard
”
“I can assure you that this is not the case”
The idea of agony/infusion was taken from GW1, but the fundamental difference was that there you could infuse any max level armor by doing a mission. You dind’t need a new special tier of rarity.
Well it seems that you can infuse any max level armor in GW2 too. It’s just that the definition of max level armor changes with this patch.
The real Million Dollar Question is “Will they make another tier with better stats than Ascended?”
If no, then we have nothing to worry about.
If yes, then we have a problem.
The real answers are :
If no, then we have a problem.
If yes, then we have a big problem.
Hey, I’m not saying that you can get them in a day, but compared to most MMORPG top-level gear…exotics are mad easy to get. And my proof of that is that I actually have them, but have never got top level gear in any other MMORPG lol
.
No you don’t have them. Top-level gear is Ascended now, go back to start.
