I’m on Anvil Rock and was put into overflow. Haven’t been able to see the event or get the achievement. Been waiting since before 9 AM PST and was wondering if I should just go do something else or keep waiting.

Can we get some official guidance about whether we have to be on the regular server to get it?

This type of activity (RNG box lottery/gambling) shouldn’t be a part of a game that is marketed to a wide age range of players. If there is a lottery, then I agree with the OP that the participants should know the numerical odds/chance of winning.

RNG Boxes, Tickets, and Tokens

I do not like this RNG gift box lottery system that ANet has been using for the last few events. I have not and will not participate in it, since I don’t believe this type of gambling should be in the game. I didn’t post with the previous events, but since this seems to be a direction that the company is continue to explore, I thought it was time to speak up.

Please just place the skins on the TC, price them where you think they will sell (and which will allow you to make a similar amount of profit as the RNG box system), and be done with it. All this gambling on boxes with an undisclosed small chance of winning a ticket to redeem for a skin is ridiculous and doesn’t belong in a game that has been marketed to a wide age range of players.

Could ANet at least officially publish the numerical odds/chances of winning, so that people can make an informed choice when they spend their in game or real life money on them?

Looking for help with crit pve trait build

Kaelon – First – welcome to GW2! I hope you have a great time.

Soldiers gear with Berserker weapons/trinkets is a good starter PvE set-up. You can get Soldiers from the Orr Karma temples (and the AC dungeon if you don’t have enough Karma) and Berserkers from Dungeons or the TP. Citadel of Flames dungeon paths 1 and 2 are very easy to run in pick up groups and give a fair amount of gold in the process. So, from the Karma that you get from leveling, the dungeon tokens that you get from running COF, and the gold that you accumulate, it shouldn’t take very long to completely gear up in exotics.

The Critical Strikes trait line is very good damage for Thieves, which is why you will see a lot of recommendations for going 30 points into it. Also, Shadow Arts and Acrobatics give survivability which is why many Thieves spec into these lines. Since you want to go DD/SB in dungeons, you could try the 0/30/20/20/0 spec. I’ve run this in the past in dungeons and it worked out pretty well.

The DD weapon set is very strong DPS against a single target, but against multiple targets, the S/X set has advantages since it hits multiple targets. I use all the weapon sets in dungeons, but usually have a sword in the main hand for about 80% of the encounters.

Good luck!

(EDIT: I don’t know why this was posted as the answer to the question.)

which build would you prefer in your party

stone cold.8609

I’ve run both the DPS build and the AH build that you mentioned in a lot of dungeons and they both worked out very well. They are both very viable dungeon builds in my experience. I honestly don’t think that my party members could tell the difference between the two.

I found the AH build to be sturdier than the DPS build, but with a noticeable (to me) decrease in DPS that made me feel that I wasn’t contributing as much as I could be to the party. Even with full zerker armor, trinkets, and weapons I didn’t think that I brought enough DPS to the table with the AH build, and I could survive quite well built this way.

With the DPS build, I am a little less sturdy but bring much more DPS which is always helpful (recent example – having to solo the end of a COF path 2 Mag event in a PUG and trying to bring down the Flame Legion Assassins). I mix in a few pieces of soldiers armor depending on content difficulty, and the rest of the gear is zerker. With this I survive just as well as I did with the AH build.

Again, as long as I am criting and giving out might, using shouts and reflections appropriately, and not dying too much, no one in my dungeon party seems to notice or care what build I run.

As to what I would prefer in my group, I would prefer the high DPS build. Things seem to go much better in dungeons when the party has more DPS (as long as you aren’t getting downed all the time while bringing it).

Guardian stats?

stone cold.8609

For most dungeons (except maybe Arah) and low level FOTM (haven’t done high fractals yet), pretty much any build will work.

I’ve run a number of guardian set-ups and while they all play differently, they all are pretty viable. The standard Altrustic Healing build (0/0/30/30/10 for example) is a good place to start, especially if you are looking to fill more of a support role. The Boonway build (0/15/0/30/25) is a good one as well and it brings a little more mobility and greatly enhanced boon duration (the boon duration runes are critical to the build) at the expense of some self healing so it is not quite as sturdy. There are a number of DPS focused builds (10/30/0/30/0 and similar), but they trade some amount of sustain and HP for the increased damage.

You can add as much Berserker stat items to any of the builds if you want to improve the DPS output. Or you can add PVT, Knights, or Valkyries stats items to increase your survivability if you want.

This was one of the unexpected changes that was made a couple of patches ago. The stealth mechanic was changed to not drop NPC aggro. I was not and still aren’t in favor of this change and as it greatly changed how stealth worked in PvE (I only play PvE). However, some people don’t seem to mind it and others actually like it. For me, it caused me to completely re-work my build and all but give up on using stealth, since it actually acts more like a taunt now. I have asked to have this change reverted, but don’t think it will happen.

A suggestion – As soon as you finish your starting quest, go to the Heart of the Mists lobby area. There you will instantly be made level 80 and have access to all of your skills. You can then try out a max level character on the golems there to see which one you like. You can try out all of the professions that way, if you want, and really be able to see for yourself which one you like best.

Also, are you interested in PvE/Dungeons, WvW, or PvP? This is important to know before you choose, because some character professions excel in one area, and are underpowered in another For example, Warriors are very strong in PvE/Dungeons and underpowered in PvP (so I’ve been told – I don’t PvP).

However to answer your specific question about Thieves and nerfs, the class has received many nerfs in the past and will probably see more in the future. Pretty much all classes can say this to some extent.

Wise – very interesting build. Thanks for sharing!

To the OP, you probably are looking for an SP build since you don’t want to rely on stealth. The offhand pistol gives you both interrupt and blind fields on demand, both of which are very helpful forms of mitigating damage. Again, since you don’t want to depend on stealth on for this, it makes the SP weapon set my first recommendation for you.

How you build and gear it from there depends on what you want to do in the game. As Blood posted, getting at least 15 into Acrobatics to help your dodges is good since you will be using them as one of your primary means of damage mitigation (along with blinds and movement). From there, I recommend getting 30 into Critical Strikes which will help you to bring good DPS because the best form of damage mitigation for a Thief is to kill the enemy before it can do much damage to you. After that, it is really up to what you want to do. More DPS or venom? Go into Deadly Arts. Trait dodging more? Go deeper into Acrobatics. Buff up steal? Go into Trickery.

For skills, Shadow Refuge almost never leaves my bar since it is expected that I bring this ability with me in dungeons. From there, there are a number of good options depending on your build goals (Sig of Agility, Sig of Shadows, Shadow step, Smoke screen, Blinding powder, …). All of our elites are useful, depending on the situation. As for armor, use as much Beserker stat items as you feel comfortable with and add in as much Soldiers, Cavaliers, or Knights stats items as you need to comfortably survive.

Personally, I still main a Thief and primary run an SP set up for PvE/dungeons and despite all the very annoying and un-understandable nerfs that the class seems to be receiving after each patch, I still find it a strong class and enjoy the play mechanics of it. In dungeons, I usually can “tank” (not that there really is anything like this in this game) longer than Guardians or Warriors in my party, and am often the last one standing in the party. Good luck!

How to balance out Thief

in Thief

Posted by: stone cold.8609

stone cold.8609

Are these changes focused on PvP or PvE/dungeons? If they are meant only for PvP, then I have no opinion since I don’t do any of that.

However if they are meant to include PvE/dungeon play, then I am not in favor of your proposed change to Shadow Refuge. In dungeons, I am often ressing dead players and need to chain my resses together in order to do it safely. The extra 10 sec is invaluable for this. The length of SR allows easier skipping of trash dungeon mobs as well as makes some fights much more manageable. Also, SR as it is now is our only stealth skill that still breaks enemy monster agro (because of it’s length). Taken together, these changes will make Thieves even less wanted in dungeon groups since SR in it’s current form is one of the most powerful unique skill that we bring in that environment.

Again, this is from a PvE/dungeon only Thief’s perspective.

s/d build for pve?

Pretty much anything works in PvE, so feel free to try things out. That being said, for a crit build getting 30 pts into CS for damage and at least 15 into Acrobatics for dodging is a good generic outline. Then put the rest of the points wherever you want. If you plan on running the dagger offhand a lot, then you’ll probably want some points into SA as well since you’ll have good access to stealth. Using the sword main hand doesn’t give you a huge single target burst, but readily lends itself to sustained good damage against multiple targets. Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies! Very good information. I’ll try to answer the questions raised.

This is only for PvE/dungeons, to be clear. I don’t have a preference for any of the weapon sets and will use pretty much any of them. I don’t like the Scepter’s autoattack and how slow the 3rd chain of the Hammer’s autoattack is, but then who does. So I usually end up with GS main with either Hammer/Staff/ or Scepter+Focus on switch.

I’ll try out some of the builds suggested this week and see what I think. Guanglai, your support build is something that I never would have thought of and am looking forward to trying it.

I think I really will end up with a build that favors DPS using a boon duration rune set in the armor. I was also playing with the build calculator and came up with a combination that looks interesting: 0/30/10/30/0. Anyone ever run this spec?

Thanks again for the help!

Build advice wanted

stone cold.8609

I recently leveled my Guardian to 80 and have playing around with different builds for a few weeks for PvE/dungeons only. I think I finally have a grasp of the mechanics of the weapon sets and traits/skills, but I still haven’t found a build the I really like.

I tried the standard AH build (0/0/30/30/10) and while it was good in a party, it was not as good for me solo. Also the DPS was somewhat lacking.

I tried a couple of DPS specs with shouts (10/30/0/30/0 and 10/25/0/30/5) and the DPS was nice, but I wasn’t sure if I was contributing anything else to the party than DPS (which Warriors and Thieves can do better). Can someone that has run these specs a lot tell me if the boons you give through shouts are enough party support?

I recently tried the Boonway build (0/15/0/30/25) and a more DPS heavy variant (0/25/0/20/25) and it worked pretty well whether in a party or solo. The DPS was a little down, but acceptable in the variant build and the uptime on the boons was really noticeable. I am wondering if these prolonged boons actually make a difference, and are worth it to party survivability to trade DPS for them?

Ideally, I’d like a build with good DPS, but also that brings something useful to a party situation. I have many hours on a Thief, so I am fairly good at active damage mitigation and managing a low HP pool, so I don’t require a build that has a ton of toughness or vit in it (not that it wouldn’t be nice to have some of that however!). Since in my experience it is impossible to reliably hold agro or really even face tank in this game at high levels (DPS and evasion/mitigation seems to trump all else), I am not looking to be a group “anchor” or traditional tank.

Anyone have any build suggestions that might get me what I am looking for?

How much of a difference does having the Monk/Water/Sanctuary runes make?

I played the with the new spec (0/25/0/20/25) over the last day or so and didn’t really see much difference in boon effect from my previous DPS spec (10/25/0/30/5). I did, however, notice the loss of DPS. I didn’t want to commit to buying the runes before trying out the build, so I don’t have them yet.

Is the reason that I am not noticing the improved boons is the lack of proper runes or the 10 pts I put into radiance from honor from the recommended spec of 0/15/0/30/25?

Hi Kharel – Nice build! I am working on a variant for PvE/dungeons only, because I’d like to find a way to get a little more DPS out of it. How do you think a 0/25/0/20/25 build would work? Is there anything else I would loose by making this change?

To the OP – are you asking for PvE, PvP, or WvW, since each of these has their own metas and popular builds? For PvE, I think it is a strong set for sustained damage and control compared to the Thief’s other choices and the current state of the offhand dagger with the nerf to reveal. I can’t speak to PvP or WvW, since I don’t do any of that.

Also, I agree that the nerf to PW should be reverted. The inititive cost is too high currently for the damage it does. However, the real strength of PW lies in the fact that you have a stun and are doing damage while evading, which is something that the auto attack doesn’t do. It also isn’t as buggy as SD skill #3 Flanking Strike.

Quick question for my fellow Thief community

in Thief

Posted by: stone cold.8609

stone cold.8609

For PvE, I am a strongly in favor of reverting the change in stealth aggro mechanic. With the previous system, you could largely control and manage enemy aggro. If you stayed in stealth for the full duration (3-4 seconds, depending you your traits), they would regen HP and run away. If you revealed more quickly, they didn’t. This added a level of finesse that complemented our traits and skill sets and helped to make up for our poor defense and HP pool.

Previously, the player had control over steath aggro and it worked well for me. With the current system, the player has lost this control. Enemies wait for you to emerge and attack immediately, making using stealth for defense (ie, I need to get some space to regen HP) more problematic. Now for this purpose, you steath and run as far as you can while stealthed to hope you break aggro (and often you don’t). It does make using steath for offense easier (ie, enemies stand and wait for your attack #1 out of stealth so you don’t have to chase them and you don’t have to worry about HP regen if you sit in stealth too long), but if you understood how the mechanic worked in PvE this wasn’t an issue in the first place.

The change really has made our downed skill #3 useless as well.

So with the change in my opinion, the Thief lost control over aggro and lost a large part of our defense, in order to make some offense easier. I don’t think it was the right move for the class and would like to see it reverted.

Suggestions for re-balancing the PvE thief

in Thief

Posted by: stone cold.8609

stone cold.8609

In a thread over in the PvP section of the forum, it looks like the developers are going to be balancing PvE, WvW, and PvP separately for this next patch. I thought it might be good to start a thread so that the PvE/dungeon Thief community could make some suggestions as to how to re-balance the PvE class in light of this new information.

My suggestions are just to revert some of the prior largely WvW/PvP driven changes:

Revert the 4 second reveal debuff back to 3 seconds.
Revert the change to the stealth aggro table mechanics.
Revert the change to pistol whip.

These changes would greatly enhance my playing experience and would not be game breakingly overpowered for PvE only, since they weren’t when they were in the game previously. Anyone else have suggestions?

Thanks for the link to buildcraft Incurafy!

I’m not entirely sure how accurate this is, and I don’t have all the equiptment I listed here (particularly not the trinkets) but if this is accurate my build looks like this:

http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/thief/?7.0|c.1g.h17.8.1g.h1|5.1g.h1|1c.a1.1c.a1.1c.a1.1p.a1.1p.a1.1c.a1|4s.d1e.1n.67.1n.67.1n.67.1n.67.1i.67|0.u36b.k46.k29.0|0.0|57.5b.5h.5c.5v|e

SO! Looks like just about 15000 vitality, and 2600 armor. At least it sounds consistant based on what I hear you guys said in this thread, I tried to add in everyone’s input with my own little flair!

I am not sure where the hell 57% crit is coming from, I have most of the equipment minus the trinkets and I am currently at 27%… if that is the case I actually can scale back on the zerker jewels and stick in some valkyrie or knight’s jewels instead!

What do you guys think, sexy build? Can be sexier? Meh?

Your build looks very solid. It seems balanced a little on the tanky/sturdy (for a Thief) side of things, which is not a bad place to start. There are always places where people might have personal preferences for other things, but I don’t see any major problems given what you want to do with the build.

Orbs/jewels are relatively inexpensive and easy to switch, so just try it both ways for yourself to see what works best for you.

The Debate: Vitality vs Toughness

in Thief

Posted by: stone cold.8609

stone cold.8609

I think we’ll need some more information to be able to give you a good answer. Are you focusing on PvE, WvW, or PvP? What is your build specs like? Do you have any pts into Acrobatics or Shadow Arts? What is weapon set do you use? How good are you at dodging?

So originally I specced the “standard” 10/30/30/0/0 (I’m calling this standard because a lot of burst thieves that I speak to has some variation of this). I run S/D and shortbow, and mostly I do dungeons although sometimes I indulge in wvw. The one thing about this build that really irritates me is my lack of dodging. I got built in dodge in FS and I could disengage with the SS from IS, that helps a lot. But I’m still missing my dodges…

While running S/D I found that I rarely have any need to steal (IS/SS are excellent gap closers, among other things), and the only time I really stealth is when I’m in trouble (my autoattack does more damage than tactical strike, dazing bosses in dungeons really doesn’t help me much). So right now I’m playing around with the traits to find my “comfort zone” and inc efficiency for my play style.

So I got rid of mug entirely (my attack went down by 100 points, that’s not too bad) and took 10 off of SA so my current trait allocation is 0/30/20/20/0. The problem HERE is that I’m missing the heal on stealth, but outside of that I’m enjoying my might on dodge, swiftness on dodge, and my quick recovery which sometimes I slot out for assasin’s reward if needed.

Current gear, 4 soldier slotted with beryl, 2 knights (gloves and leggings) slotted with beryl, zerker sword, dagger, shortbow (and I stock a zerker pistol and dagger just in case in my inventory). No decisions made on trinkets as of yet, I was waiting to hear back from you guys before making that call

Thanks for providing the additional information – very helpful! I was also going to suggest using the GW2buildcraft calculator as this will give you numbers that are close to what will be seen in PvE in my experience.

You are running a build that I leveled my thief up to 80 on and dungeoned on, so I know it well – 0/30/20/20/0 with SD/SB. It’s a good solid balance between damage and survivability spec. Are you rotating between dagger skill 5 and sword skill 1 to chain stealth and daze (This was my go to attack combo for this set)? Since the reveal nerf, this timing of this has been messed up making it much less fluid than before.

As was suggested, you could also go with a 0/30/25/15/0 if you wanted to trade some initiative regen for might on stealth. I also ran this spec for a while also and found it to be equally effective, as the typical SD spec doesn’t require much initiative to run. You give up some SB cluster bomb spam ablility for near permanent 2-4 stacks of might while attacking with SD (provided you are rotating skills 1 and 5 often).

To answer your original question, I think you will be fine going all Berserker for your trinkets/jewelry. You have a good base of survivablity in your current gear, so getting some more bite in your attacks using Berserker trinkets makes sense.

The Debate: Vitality vs Toughness

in Thief

Posted by: stone cold.8609

stone cold.8609

I’m going 4 soldier gear, 2 knights gear, all slotted with beryl orb. The trinkets is where the fun is at. Wearing no triknets I got:
2437 attk
24% crit
56% crit damage
16,885 vitality
2232 armor

Based on those stats, anyone know if I’ll be ok if I go balls to the wall with zerker trinkets? I really wanna up my attk crit% and crit damage, I wanna get my attk as close to 3k as possible, my crit% as close to 40% as possible and crit damage as close to 95% as possible. Ideas?

I think we’ll need some more information to be able to give you a good answer. Are you focusing on PvE, WvW, or PvP? What is your build specs like? Do you have any pts into Acrobatics or Shadow Arts? What is weapon set do you use? How good are you at dodging?

As to toughness vs vit, get enough toughness so that you aren’t getting one shotted all the time (this will depend on your knowledge of the encounters, positioning, and dodging) and enough vit to allow you to clear conditions before they become a problem (this will depend on your build specs/equipment).

So these numbers will be different for every player, and that’s one of the reasons for the debate. What works for me and my build, probably won’t be as effective for you and your build. FWIW, I typically run more Berserker stat items and rubies than you are considering and do fine.

It's time to balance PvP apart from PvE/WvW

Jonathan – as someone who only plays PvE/dungeons, it is good the hear that you and your team are looking PvE, WvW, and PvP as separate entities and making balancing changes separately. This makes a lot of sense to me, as I have seen and had to adapt to many changes that seemed to be geared to fix issues in WvW or PvP (that weren’t issues in PvE) that had large negative impact in PvE play.

Speaking from someone who has a lot of hours on the PvE Thief class, it is good to hear that you are reconsidering the recent changes to reveal. It really has diminished the effectiveness of the PvE offhand dagger builds.

Could you also reconsider the change to made to the aggro table upon leaving stealth that was made two patches ago? For me this is even a bigger issue with using stealth in its current form in PvE. Stealth basically acts like a mob taunt now, since they don’t drop aggro and wait for you to reappear (except when using Shadow Refuge for the full amount of time). Among many things, it has made our downed skill #3 completely useless since the mob is standing right over you waiting for you to reappear from stealth to finish you off.

Thank you for your consideration!

Can the Superior Sigil of Generosity be crafted or only found through drops? Also, if it can be crafted, what is the recipe?

Thiefs in dungeons?

I PUGed to a Dungeon Master title using only my Thief, so I think the Thief is adequate in dungeons. Even though it is my main character, it does have some issues that you should consider before investing a lot of time in one.

First, the class seems to be continuously nerfed in the name of balancing WvW/PvP that seriously impact PvE/dungeon gameplay. I have had to rework my build several times to accommodate this.

Second, Thief is not currently considered top tier in Dungeons by many in the general community which may make it difficult to find games especially for more advanced/high level encounters. There are a lot of Thieves in dungeons that try to run a WvW GC DD build and perform poorly, which contributes to the above impression. Also, since your party support is not as obvious as that provided by Guardians/Warriors/Mesmers, it is often not appreciated by the group especially if it is not a sophisticated one.

Third, with the low HP pool and reliance on active damage mitigation (dodges/evades), the skill level for effectively bringing one to a dungeon is on the higher end of the curve. You really have to know the encounters/boss tells and act accordingly, because the margin for error is very small. If built and traited correctly, however, you can stay in melee range for a surprisingly long time rivaling a heavy armor user.

Now, with all that out of the way, if you are good at dodging and are looking for a very mobile class that can currently put out good sustained DPS and bring some blinds/stuns/pulls(Scorpion Wire)/combo finishers and stealth to the party, then the Thief may be a good choice for you.

If you want to pursue a PvE/DungeonThief, I would suggest using a sword mainhand, with either D or P offhand (P is probably safer to start out on with the blind on the P5 skill), and a shortbow on switch initially. Put 30 points into Critical Strikes to get an adequate amount of damage, at least 15 into Acrobatics to help your dodges, and the rest wherever you like. I wouldn’t get too reliant on the Shadow Arts line, since this seems to be the focus of many of the recent nerfs. Also, getting some PVT stat armor initially might help learning the ropes of the profession.

Good luck!

Are you going to do something about thieves ?

I play only PvE/dungeons so don’t get over in this forum very often. I wanted to post to voice my concerns that the changes that are being made to try and “balance” the thief in PvP/WvW are signifcantly and negatively impacting the Thief in PvE. There are many posts over in the Thief forum concerning this and was wondering if someone could address the questions being asked there.

Is the PvE capability of theThief being considered when making these class changes? With every change, our ability to contribute meanifully to high end PvE party content diminishes, and we are not overpowed (or considered top tier) in this aspect of the game by any means.

Please note that I am a PvE/Dungeon only player who has many hours on the class, so please view my comments with this point of view. This is not a QQ post, but one that is really looking for some input from the developers.

Last months patch where stealth stopped dropping aggro was a build breaking change for my previous play style, which caused me to give up the offhand dagger (and the Thief class for a while!) and completely rework my build. I’m still not entirely clear why this was done, since I didn’t have trouble managing aggro under the old mechanic.

Now revealed has been increased by 1 sec, which limits the PvE offhand D builds, but
seems to do nothing to the steath issues in PvP or WvW. I don’t understand this change either.

I’ve seen the SOTG and the published vision statement for the Thief class, but neither of these changes seem to be consistent with this with respect to the PvE Thief.

What is the overall developer vision for Stealth in PvE? Will any of our other trait lines or ablilities be adjusted in light of the diminished usefulness of Stealth for PvE? Are Thieves still supposed to be the most mobile and slippery class in PvE (because currently we are not)?

Thanks for the replies everyone! To clarify, I will only be doing PvE in it, but want it to have good performance.

Jandus, thanks for the link.

How much of a hit to performance would I take not having a SSD?

How would the game run on a computer with these specs?:

•3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3630QM (6MB Cache, up to 3.4GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0)
•Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit
•14.0" High Def+ (900p/1600×900) with WLED backlight
•8GB2 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz
•750GB 7,200 RPM SATA + 32GB mSATA Caching SSD

Thanks for the reply – very helpful!

I guess that I am on the right track then and will just have to keep leveling up. I haven’t been using SOR for swiftness, so I’ll try to do it.

Warrior leveling question

in Warrior

I’m leveling up a warrior, currently at level 35, and have a question. Will the character unlock skills/traits that will allow it to play significantly differently at 80? I’m using GS, A/M, LB currently, with FGJ, SIO, Banner of Displine, SOR and they are very effective.

However, I find that I am lacking any real mobility at the moment (I am coming from maining a Thief, FWIW). It seems that I pretty much switch between melee sets when skills are on cool down. Switch in LB when need to kite. Make sure to keep FGJ up, use Banner for hard fight, SIO and heal when needed.

Am I doing something wrong here? I appreciate any assistance!

Also, another somewhat related question. How does a level 80 sustain health? Use the big HP pool as a buffer and kill before being killed? Looking over the traits, I don’t see a good way to sustain HP.
