Paying for content?

in Living World

I see that any missed season 2 content is up for sale. Interesting.

It was my understanding that AN was developing this game with the promise that all content, past present and future, would be free for a lifetime, and the only aspect of the game that was to be store bought was aesthetics and convenience items. It was the main selling point for me to buy the game and to support AN this far.

It is concerning for me, no so much as the price of the current Living World content now, but if this is the current policy how will this effect the expansion and future expansions? Is AN expanding their horizons when it comes to what they charge for and what they do not?

Myself, my family and many of the people I game with are questioning what appears to be a rather liberal stance on marketing, is this a first step towards future price tags on content, upgrades, etc?

I wouldn’t use word “content” in such liberal terms as you, but I completely agree with you when it comes to story.
Thing is, GW2 is different than other MMOs in many ways. Most of them make it a better game, some not so. I shudder every time when I think how much money I’ve spent for sub in ESO compared to how much money I’ve spent in GW2 and GW2 is miles ahead when it comes to quality.
But this, paying for story, lore, is a bullpoop of epic proportions. Especially when you realize you had to log in for 2 seconds and that part of content would be free. I would understand if the reasoning behind such pay gating was “customer loyalty” or something similar, but the only requirement being a few seconds of game time, makes that untrue.
Luckily for me, I’ve found the story and especially it’s presentation in GW2, to be so bad, I didn’t care much about it from day one. So, I don’t care much because I have three chapters locked. It would be nice to have them unlocked and get achievements and/or other chapter specific things, but I will not be paying even 1 Eur for them.
It’s just a principle I have.

What is/was challenging content and why?
You say dungeons and fractals are easy and that’s something that contradicts my experience, so I was wondering what you find challenging enough and why that is so?

A lot of us can solo most dungeon and trio fractals so not really that hard. But that’s the thing. Challenging will depend on each person. That’s why I REALLY REALLY hope that the difficulty will be variable. So that casual can complete the content, but that elite players can still have a challenge to face in a year.

Were you able to solo dungeons or rush through fractals from the start? Meaning first time you tried them?
Please, correct me if I am wrong, but I would guess you weren’t.

So, if that is true, dungeons and fractals were challenging when they were fresh and new. When no one new which parts to skip, where to stand to circumvent mechanics and when there were no other known exploits. They were made unchallenging by exactly those that were searching for shortcuts and ways of finishing it faster by 1 sec.
We are talking about a game. Where almost everything is predetermined, where all actions, steps, mechanics have very limited set of possibilities. And once you develop understanding of all those possibilities, it’s normal that things turn from challenging, exciting and new into “been there, done that”.

There is a MMO, launched last year, that has turned into such a walk in the park, the only advice players can give to those that complain about the game being too easy (entire PVE experience), to go naked and disable large part of their abilities in order to find a challenge.
Believe me, GW2 is faaar from that.

I understand everyone that says there is not enough challenge in grouped or other content in GW2. But I find that perfectly normal, considering the way all these players handled the game. I don’t believe there are many players among that group that finished certain dungeon or fractal once or twice. I believe most, if not all, of those that find GW2 not challenging enough, are the ones that played the heck out of the game. Finished every dungeon hundreds of times and achieved fractal lvl 50 long ago. And there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s their decision how much or how hard they play and no one can hold that against them. But you can’t seriously expect something you’ve done hundreds of times while actively searching for ways to do it faster and easier, to stay challenging.

I predict that he same group of players that find GW2 not challenging enough now, will find raids, no matter how hard they will be at start, equally not challenging after they’ve exploited every possible way of finishing them. It may take a while, with little luck even months of playing, but that moment will come.

My question of “what you find challenging enough” was meant to understand players that feel like that in order to establish what are the ways of making challenging content.
Do you do dungeons and fractals with less then optimal gear?
Do you skip content and use known exploits to finish them?
Do you PUG?
Do you always use the same skill rotations and ways of combat?
These and many other questions can determine what, exactly, is the thing that makes something challenging?
But even without those questions, there is one single thing anyone can do to make it so. In or out of the game. Change the way you do things. You might be surprised.

What was your idea and reasoning behind such pay gating otherwise free content?

The reasoning was to keep players interested in the game and to continue logging in.

Those that stuck with the game during Season 2’s release time frame were rewarded with having free access to that content forever. Those that were less interested in the game and did not log in missed out and have to pay a small fee (either with in-game currency or real world cash) to unlock it, or even just group with someone that has it unlocked.

Seems reasonable to me, but that is just my opinion.

I can understand the desire to make story more appealing or, like you said, players more interested in the game, but I fail to see how putting story behind pay gate is doing that.
Especially considering that same story was free for those that were simply logged in at the time it was “fresh”. Are players punished for not logging in every day?

The only result of such a design is that I am not more interested in the game or story. My interest is actually smaller due to such “we respect those that log in every day more than those that do not” philosophy.
Remember, this is(was) B2P game and there is(was) no reason to make players feel like they have to be in it every day in order get everything the game has to offer. Unless the only thing that governs the decision making process for GW2 is the thought that players should be “influenced” to play as much as they can, so cash shop would sell more. Is this the kind of game GW2 has turned into?

The thing that I don’t get, is why would they bother to give me the final chapter of Season 2? I didn’t even get the parts before it, just the ending. This makes literally zero sense to a player who doesn’t supplement the game with forums/wiki/youtube. It feels really bad.

Here’s what I think happened in your case:

  • You logged into GW2 sometime between January 13 and January 27 (the date when episode 8 released and the end of the two week “free unlock” period)
  • You completed your Personal Story six months later
  • The content guide looked for the next available story in your Story Journal. Since you probably don’t have any other episodes from Season 2 unlocked it put you on Episode 8.

I’d need to see a screenshot to be absolutely sure, but that’s likely what happened.

The good: You got a free episode
The bad: You played that episode out of linear order and it confused you

We certainly can message this better in the game, so I’ll be having some conversations about how to change this behavior.

This is exactly what happened to me and I have to agree with OP. It’s the worst kind of storytelling you could’ve designed. Not to mention the idea that we now have to pay for something that would be free if we would accidentally be logged in for a second at the time those stories were fresh.
What was your idea and reasoning behind such pay gating otherwise free content? Please, correct me if I am wrong in my above assumptions, but current way of storytelling and chapter locking, leaves one completely uninterested in story itself.

They are too easy.

Zerk meta is because it’s fastest and people want to farm as fast as possible.

I don’t know if you mean its too easy to see there is some trolls in here or if your saying wearing zerker gear is easy. If its the second thing then: Zerker gear in normal dungeons and even fractals to some extent IS easy. But that is because dungeons and fractals are easy. If you make actually challenging group content, then zerker will be the opposite of easy. Nomad will be easier. And zerker like the hardest to wear.

Hey guys, Probably the only one thinking this. ANET BRING ME THE HxC RAIDS. I want to spend HOURS in one instance and only be a % done with it. I wouldn’t even argue against ilvls for raids, AR is so boring same with fractals. In every dungeon so far there is a corner to stand in and glitch everything. No mechanics just face tank and loot. That’s too boring. Give us something engaging, something to work for, good drops, high gear, get off your crafting fetish it’s getting old.

I have been playing GW since launch in 05, and I know this will most likely ever happen, but raids are what bring people to MMOs, we love hard content not there to baby players. I want something that if I’m not good enough I won’t get it. So many games are catering to the casual players today, but catering to them 100% of the game is driving me nuts. Yes high lvl fractals are difficult. But there are ways around the mechanics. I know “why not just play with people that don’t skip them?” Good luck putting that guild together.

As a speed clearer from GW1 yea.there were faster way to do things and that’s what we did. But it was FUN. there were quests, there were jobs, there were ACTUAL BUILDS. Again it will never happen, but imo breaking the holy trienty is limiting the game as a whole. It’s all about face and tank easy. No talent or buffs NEEDED. Classes need rolls for good raids, HEALER TANK DPS, it’s a part of choosing a class imo.

But with all that being said I love GW amd GW2 and excited to see what they have to bring to the table this weekends.

I think I understand your points and reasoning, but as a casual player, I am hoping they will not put too much emphasis on this “make it as hard as possible” philosophy. That said, I do hope there are raids in the future. GW2 is one of the best games when it comes to grouped content.
What I am trying to say is that the only time a dungeon, fractal or raid feels really hard is first few times you are doing it. Because everything is new and anything can kill you or make your party wipe. As soon as you figure out a way around stuff, you WILL do it. At least in organised groups.
Remember, it is you and your party buddies that deliberately rush through or ignore parts of dungeon or whatnot. Now, I am not saying “go naked” to have better or more challenging experience. But you can do something. Start doing dungeons and fractals with pugs. And I don’t mean “15K+AP, experienced meta zerk” or similar. Do it with “all welcome” groups. You just might realize that all those months and years of skipping content and rushing through dungeons made them unchallenging.

I would like for every type of player to have something fun and challenging to do in GW2. But let’s be honest. Even if they made “it takes one month to finish this raid” it would not be enough. You and your buddies would try to finish it in one month and one second and … then what? You are done with it and now you start to look for ways how to make it faster. And you are in the same situation as now.

Sometimes it’s not what you do, but how you do it. Try changing that and you might find there are different ways of having fun.

yeah too bad they had to actually destroy meta build just to they can sell spec…. lol

it is like: hey let me break your leg so i can sell you wheelchair super duper diamond pro 7000

Let’s face some facts here.

If you’re invested enough in the game to care about what is and is not a meta build, you were going to buy any expansion that included new build options anyway.

MMO developers do not add new build options to the game and balance around the people that choose not to pay them for their work.

It’s like complaining blizzard “paywalled” SC2 players with each expansion’s new units.

When expansions or DLC release, any competitive meta is developed around the new content. This is true of every competitive game on purpose, because that content is intended to disrupt the meta.

They nerfed acro because they felt it was overpowered in the current meta (I don’t agree with them for the record) but they don’t feel it is overpowered in the new meta derived from every other elite spec being in that mix.

They also probably shifted acro to an e-spec so that it can’t combo with future ranged elite specs that would end up overpowered when combined with it, since by design you can not combine elite specs.

They didn’t “nerf acro to sell it back to us”

They nerfed acro because they felt it was unbalanced in an arena full of nothing but other non-elite specs. They added the elite spec because they felt it was balanced in an arena full of their other elite specs.

They knew they would get this backlash and they did it anyway because in their opinion it was healthier for the game in the long run. Whether that is true or not remains to be seen. I hope it is true, and the build limitations implicit in the elite spec design allow previously unthinkable build variations and styles for every class, including ours.

Nicely put and there could be truth to it. Sadly, neither me nor you really know what their reason for doing it was.
While it could be true they only saw balancing problems and decided to fix them with elite spec, it could also be true they simply wanted to repackage something that has already been in the game and re-sell it to us under the pretense of giving us something new.

Utility skills do bring a new “pulmonary impact” and I am interested how that will work, but that’s only one skill and added to that there is a strong feeling this game is going in the same direction as some other Korean games where kiddies get to be like Chuck Norris and use brass knuckles or similar. How do I put either just agony resistane or agony resistance and power in it?

I can also buy a “versatile simple infusion” which offers +5 agony resistance. Is it enough if I put this simple fusion into that unused offensive slot or must I make an agony infusion slot on that ring?

If I must make another slot for agony resistance, how do I do it? Searching this forums yields no results. Literally. So, is the recipe found on the net for ring infusion enough for making another slot for agony resistance on this ring? Will it make another slot of replace already existing one? Tequatl fight - revive others or not?

in Players Helping Players

What you DO:
Get DOWNED people up (which should be fast if zerk is playing compact and balanced)

What you DO NOT DO:
Rezz DEAD people. The time they need to respawn and get back in the fray almost equals the time needed for them to be rezzed.
In this case, it is DPS minus 1 player…
If you do rezz them, it is DPS minus 2 players. (the dead player and you rezzing instead of attacking)

Furthermore, there is a strategy to prevent dying underneath Tequila’s feet..it involves the players :

1. Dodge the waves
2. have CC removal (for fear)

And ALSO turreteers, which main tasks are:
1. Use turret skill 2 to lower tequila’s scales (PRIORITY ONE! )
2. Use Turret skill 3 on zerk(s) when AOE fields appear on them
3. Use Turret skill 4 & 5 to provide boons , both offensive as defensive
4. In between turret skill 1 to do just damage

Thanks.
I heard it said, you do not get such a good reward for manning the turret as you do for fighting Tequatl directly. Is that true?

Grind is still grind

Generally, I don’t find GW2 grindy, but that changes when I think about my crafters and their demand for material. Recently, I decided to level my weaponsmith from 300 to 400. After several crafted pieces, I found myself in a situation without any necessary materials and that has put me into a situation where I do have to grind to get them. Of course, there is always trade post, but prices there prevent me from buying as many materials as I would need, and that again, points me in a direction of a grind.
I have recently returned to GW2 and don’t know if that has been changed, but at the start, you were “punished” for excessive grinding of PVE content, by not getting anything after a short amount of time spent in the same area.
That, and the necessity to grind in order to get needed materials, does not go along well.

I have been in several Tequatl fights and half of those have failed. And what happens is, that usually after such failed attempts, chat if filled with various comments.
Among the most heated ones are those that promote players do not revive others, as that lowers their DPS.

If I do try to revive others, I do lower my own DPS, but that player is back in the fight sooner, which makes general DPS bigger. If I don’t revive others, I keep doing damage, but we, as a group, can feel the lack of that player’s DPS, which is waiting for someone to revive her/him or is travelling back from WP.

I have also seen many chat calls to stack under Tequatl’s feet, but I don’t see how that can help, since those under his feet are usually the ones that die first.

So, what is the best strategy or tactics for this Boss?

Hi! Welcome to the shadows.

Warrior is indeed a more static class, and Thief is just so much more fun!
So if you like that playstyle, don’t shelve him/her because you feel it’s challenging.

As for AOE’s, it all comes down to move outside that big red circle. Warrior’s probably could stand in them and like “is something touching me?”… A Thief can’t do that. Unfair, right? :-P

As a Thief you have to be more aware of your surroundings, and act fast.

What traits and gear are you using?

I just turned 80, so most of my gear, while being lvl 75-80, is there mostly because it looked better than what I had before. I usually prefer increase in power, precision or ferocity over toughness, vitality and condition damage.
I got most of it while fighting world bosses and my decision to change it based mostly on it’s color . I know it’s not the most practical way of doing it, but yellow or gold does look better .
The same goes for traits. I have whatever I got while leveling. I recently made a list of traits I would like to get, so my next priority is to find zones I need to uncover or activities I need to do in order to get them.

Is it better to make the necessary gear myself, buy it from others, or continue doing bosses and PVE and wait for something good to drop into my lap?

New at end game Thief

My Thief recently got to 80, so naturally I started looking towards dungeons and fractals. Well, it was Fractals daily that got me really thinking about them. I was lucky to get into a group of 3 other Fractals newbs, so we all started with our lvl 1 Fractal to get our feet wet.
It was a sobering experience. I died so many times, I felt like a complete kitten after two Fractals and decided not to do them, until I’ve managed to learn a bit more about my class. It’s just not fair to others in my team, if they need to keep rezzing me as I am not prepared for such a huge step up from ordinary PVE.

I can see there are numerous threads about Thief in Fractals or Dungeons, but they are all months old, so my question would be, if those pointers are still valid, or should I try to find some more recent ones?
My biggest problem was with AOEs. What is the best way to counter that, besides avoiding them? In a Fractal with “Dulfy”, everything around me was one huge red circle. What to do in such situation?

Let me tell you, it doesn’t help my ego, seeing players soloing Dungeons with their Thief. But, it does help in me in understanding there’s much to learn about it.

I even made a new Warrior in attempt to level him to 80, learn about Dungeon and Fractal mechanics, and then do them with my Thief. But after all this time, playing a Warrior feels so … “static”. I just can’t find the same level of enjoyment out of him as I do with my Thief.

I will probably keep slowly leveling Warrior, while getting better gear and missing traits on my Thief and trying to learn more about his combos, and trait changes one needs to do for different encounters, but any kind of tip would really be appreciated.
So far, I’ve found the most fun with D/D and D/P, but I see I will have to dwell into SB and S/P more than I have.

If you want to ever win 1v1 battles vs decent players, reroll profession. You wasted your time.

Why?

They have to be in the AoE circle for it to take effect.. Quite logical, no?
The pulses means that the blind is re-applied on every pulse.. So if an enemy stands in the AoE, the blind will make his first attack miss, but afterwards the blind is gone.. So the reapplying of the blindness with the smoke field blinds him again..

Thank you.
Yes, it is logical, but like I said, the circle is very small and I have yet to see myself in a situation where 5 of my enemies are all standing in it. I usually get 2 or 3 of them to all be in it. So, I assumed my “logic” might not be GW2’ “logic”.

So, first pulse is activated at the start of the skill, the second one at 2nd second and the third at 4th second?

I’m playing a Thief and using pistol in my off-hand a lot. Pistol’s No 5 “black powder” puts an AOE circle on the ground and it blinds nearby foes. Do they have to stand in this circle for blind to affect them or is them being near the circle enough for the blind? The circle is quite small and I don’t think I’ve ever been in a situation where 5 of my enemies were all standing in it.
What are those “pulses” or “interval” that are mentioned in skill tip for “black powder”?
I tried wiki, but I have to admit I can’t really understand what that description means.

Is there a way to save sets of gear+traits?

in Players Helping Players

It is not currently possible. This feature has been asked for, but not yet promised.

Thank you.
I have to admit I am baffled as to why this hasn’t been done already, as it’s a seriously tedious way of doing something that should not be so. The shear amount of time spent on searching every single piece of weapon and manually placing it in it’s proper place is ridiculous. Especially since the game has so many different screens for character and other management aspects.
I am probably just spoiled by ESO, or more correctly, it’s add-ons, but GW2 is miles ahead of that game when it comes to the amount of thought that went into it and the idea that this hasn’t been on dev’s radar so far, has me wondering. Does anyone know what their reasoning behind not doing this type of management routine, is?

I am currently leveling my thief and I find myself switching between different weapon sets quite often. I find it very time consuming to find that piece of weapon I was using before and switch it to proper place and then, later on, do it again.
When I am going to learn some traits, I will be doing the same with them, as well.
So, is there a way to save my setup and switch it with one button click? I understand there is no way to do it in combat, but what can I do outside of it to fasten this process?
Is manually doing it every time, the only way?

Confused about soulbound items

Several items are not salvageable. That includes items you get from the personal story, items you can buy from karma vendors and items you can buy from WvW vendors. If you don’t want to use one (especially since any rune/sigil would be unretrievable) the only use I have found for those items is the mystic forge …

Combine 4 items of equal rarity and you’ll get a random new one which is then sellable or salvageable. Sole exceptions are the WvW items – you cannot even mystic-forge those.

Thank you.

I have several soulbound items that I can’t salvage. They were obtained via leveling and are either blue or green gear items and even if I try using blue or green salvage kit, there is no option to do it.
I can’t sell them to vendors or via trade shop, so what can I do with them? Is there any other way I could use them instead of destroying them?
If there is nothing I can do but destroying them, how can I identify them instead of buying an appropriate salvage kit and trying to use it on them?

Weapon changing with one button press?

in Players Helping Players

Is there a way to change primary or secondary weapon with one button click? Outside of combat, of course.
Let’s say I am using two daggers on my Thief and my secondary weapon is short bow. I see a group of enemies in front of me and I would like to change my two daggers for my sword and pistol combo. Is there a way I can do that with one button press without having to open my char window and manually changing both weapons?

Thief's role in dungeons?

I have a lvl 45 Thief. My main weapon is D/D with SB or S/P as my offhand. I am trying to decide if I should play a dungeon or two, but found myself in a position of not understanding what my thief’s role in dungeon really is?
While playing Warrior, I don’t have such misgivings about his role or what should he do while in dungeons. It’s more or less pure damage dealing with only difference in range he is at.
Is it the same with Thief? Can I play him in pure DD role without gimping the rest of my group? I like using pistol’s Black powder and beside Shadow refuge’s role in helping others in reviving I don’t see my char doing much more in terms of group utility. So, I am more or less only DD thief.
Is that enough for dungeons on this stage?

Dungeons ... before I turn 80, or after?

in Players Helping Players

I apply to my first dungeon with my lvl 35 Warrior and even if I create a new group advertisement which clearly states “story run”, I usually get 80 lvl chrs. I am not complaining. It’s great to get help from players with better geared and more focused chars. But it got me wondering what incentive there is to do dungeons on par with their lvl.

So, basically I am asking what is the difference in doing under lvl 80 dungeons with chars that are level “appropriate” as opposed to doing them with lvl 80 chars?
Is doing them with under lvl 80 char better for loot? Do you get more exp?

Blindness ... why is there duration?

Than it must simply be a bug I’ve encountered as I’ve seen the icon stay on even after that first outgoing attack was activated. But not every time, which made me think I don’t understand blindness and I made this thread as a result of it.
