Weapon Suggestion: Boomerangs

A whip would be a cool weapon too.

Going back to boomerangs, you could make a lot of really cool skins for them. Everything from traditional style wooden weapons, to metal ones with blades as wings, to enchanted ones where the middle part is an ornate metal piece with blades of fire shooting out at the sides. You could easily adapt this to different types of etheral weapons. Someone mentioned making a bat themed one, you could make winged weapons which would look cool.

I think the coolest would be the character holding on to the metal piece in the middle with blades of fire shooting out at the sides. Wielding it alone would look awesome let alone how crazy it would look having a flaming boomerang flying towards you! When you sheath it, the fire would disappear and you would simply have an ornate handle at your side.

More on time taken to attack, certain auto attack skills in the game already have upwards of 3 seconds per full attack cycle. I believe a 2 to 3 second trajectory for a full attack would work well. 1 second or so to travel out to its target at its maximum range, and 1 second or so to travel back. As mentioned in previous posts, one of the dynamics of this type of weapon would be that as range decreased travel time would decrease, thus increasing attack frequency. You could keep the base damage the same or reduce it to keep the DPS proportional. Maybe even make a minimum attack range to further promote the intelligent use of character positioning.

Interesting ideas on the weapon skins Ardid. Yes discs and magical orbs would be cool!

As for the weapon return, it could be handled in one of two ways: The more basic involves a weapon that automatically tracks your position so you will ensure you always get it back. This would likely be the default. Many skills currently have this behaviour. Otherwise, you could have it return to the position you originally attacked from, possibly gaining an incentive like a short lived boon for an auto attack if you were to catch it.

I believe the first method would be more useful, as it does not limit a player to be at that position while still giving a very unique weapon pathing option.

As for timings, this would be a weapon with a high velocity to cut down on the wait time for an auto attack. The frequency of attacks may still need to be on the lower end to give a good aesthetic, but I don’t think it would be too much of a problem. ie – the closer you are to your target the faster you could attack. This would give a nice option to players who prefer melee as the weapon would increase in effectiveness as they closed in to their target, and switched to a melee weapon. Once again, adding a new game dynamic.

Even if it was a slow weapon at longer ranges, given that this weapon promotes intelligent use of terrain Anet could implement weapon skills to further enhance this strategy, and reward the player for good use of positioning.

I’ve posted on this before, but I’d like once again to express my appreciation. Thank you Anet for allowing festivals to go on for a few weeks. It gives casual players a realistic amount of time to take part and not feel like they are missing out. I’ve played games where the festivals were so short, or the achievements so challenging it required a huge time sink if you wanted to attempt it. Events like that exclude many players from completion, or force time management on something which is supposed to be done for entertainment.

Thank you for making a game for gamers!

Weapon Suggestion: Boomerangs

Anet has stated that in GW2 they intended to make combat strategic, one way was by encouraging the player to use terrain to their advantage. Enter, the boomerang.

I propose a boomerang weapon, with the following potential attributes. 900 range. Character throws boomerang from one hand at a 20° angle to the side of the direction they are looking. The boomerang goes to 900 or whatever the target range is, sweeps over to a mirrored position 20° on the opposite side of the characters looking direction before returning.

This would create a unique and very interesting game dynamic. Instead of trying to line up enemies directly in front of you as you would with piercing attacks from a rifle or bow, you would try to get them to stand broad-side to you. This would new ways for the player to maneuver and attempt to manipulate the battle field. Also, if you were teaming up with a player that used a piercing attack, you could create a cross fire if your attack path was perpendicular to theirs. Team coordination for a higher kill factor.

I also propose the boomerang is both a main and an offhand weapon. If you dual wielded them, the main hand would fire at one angle, and the offhand at the other. This would create a very cool aesthetic appeal. You could have two boomerangs at opposing angles shoot off, and returned after crossing each others paths. It would look so cool! Add to that weapon effects and it brings it to a new level of awesome.

Since the boomerang is a weapon that requires some finesse, I suggest it is only used (at least at first) by rangers, thieves and mesmers.

Skins could be anything from the typical common practical variety, to ornate ones for mesmers. Thief themed skins could have sharpened blades on the weapon.

Now that you mention it, I do remember hearing years ago that the people who worked on Diablo 2 and left to create Anet did so because they did not believe in Blizzard’s philosophy of gaming/marketing. Does anyone have any information on this?

I realize this is a GW2 forum, but I know a lot of players that are here from the original game.

Guild Wars Eye of the North had a few references to Galaxy Quest, which is a hilarious movie especially if you’re into sci-fi. Some such references are skills like “Never Give Up!”, “Never Surrender!” and “By Ural’s Hammer!”

“By Ural’s Hammer!” is a reference to “By Ghrab Thaar’s Hammer!” which is a line spoken a few times in the movie. That is not the easter egg I’m talking about however.

Ghrab Thaar’s Hammer from Galaxy Quest is an easter egg in of itself! It is a reference to the origin of the “Blessed Hammer” in Diablo II made by Blizzard Entertainment, as noted in the lore of the site noted below:

http://diablo.gamepedia.com/Blessed_Hammer_

I thought it was interesting how this winded its way back to one of Anet’s competitors and also another classic RPG. On another note, the rotating hammers from the Revenant skill “Vengeful Hammers” makes me reminisce of the hammers from the Diablo II skill “Blessed Hammer.” I highly doubt the similarities are intentional, but it lets me fondly play homage to one of the games I cut my teeth on while playing the best RPG ever created.

I still have hope. SAB symbolized a connection between myself and gamers who grew up like me at Anet. It was an embodiment of the days of old, the heart of what it means to be a video gamer. GW2 has that same heart, SAB was really a dream within a dream. It will always be with us, I look forward to the day Moto perfects his design and not only will SAB be back, but makes it continually operational for the good of Tyria. Take heart brothers and sisters, the 6 Gods may have abandoned Tyria but Moto works without sleep.

I’m excited about this and once again, am very pleased with the thoughtful balanced approach Anet has taken.

“These new freedoms might allow you to get to places in these maps we did not originally intend you to see. As long as your explorations remain harmless, it’s all part of the fun!”

No doubt the original game was not designed for gliding, but I think it is a welcomed and fun addition! I love the fact they’ll leave some of the sneaky “you’re not supposed to be here” areas for the people who like finding weird things in game (like I do) to snoop around and access them. Harmlessly of course!

Thank you Anet.

Yes, that’s right, I propose we combine the incredible popularity of infinite harvesting tools with the mind melting graphics of the Super Adventure Box to make……. Super Harvesting Tools!

Think of all the fun ways this could be implemented. Perfectly cheesy 8 bit sounds, and possibly even a two-frame harvesting sequence (the wind up and the hit for metal and wood, the kneel and the grab for plants).

My heart is skipping a beat just thinking of it. :’)

One of my guildies is colour blind. He loves the game. The part he has trouble with are the few areas of the game which require use of colour to be effective. ie – the new raid. He has a hard time differentiating between what he needs to hit. In situations like this, what he does is alter his graphic settings so he can more easily distinguish between what he needs to. It works great for the target, but makes the rest of the game look really messed up.

I propose a colour blind mode toggle. It would allow the entire game to have same standard standard graphics, but when selected would only change the appearance of things in the game where colour differentiation really matters. This way the game would be the same for everyone else, but the toggle could be enabled in the option menu for people who are colour blind.

I realize there are a few types of colour blindness, my friend is red/green. I’m not sure if it would be more beneficial to have default colour blind mode colours for the game depending on what type of colour blind you are, or if it would just be easier/better to let people set colours for 3-5 different colours depending on how many Anet wants people to differentiate between.

I know Anet has made great efforts to be as inclusive as possible, this would be another great step. This would also help pave the way for future colour based encounters.

Elite Specializations and Build Templates

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

supermanboy.4592

I have a suggestion: allow for build/equipment/skill templates to be saved like we did in GW1.

I have a few elite builds which are very or completely different than my regular setup on my character. For instance, I’ve made my guardian to be a party support character and have set up all skills, traits and equipment equipment to match. I like having a hybrid style build with my dragonhunter however, it due to my setup I have to change pretty much everything. Then, when I want my regular build again I have to change it back. There is nothing preventing me from doing this however it is pretty inconvenient. Another example is my druid, which is set up completely differently than how I prefer my ranger.

Also, I’ve found with other classes (like my elementalist and mesmer) there are a couple different styles of builds I play by switching traits, however once again it is a bit of a pain to go from one to the other.

Can you please add the ability to save and load character traits, skills and equipment so we can more easily switch between all of the fun class play styles you have already enabled us to play? Thank you!

EDIT: This will only become more useful as the game’s horizontal development continues. ie – as more item stat combinations are created, more weapons are added and more elite specializations are made.

Suggestion for Map Pings

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

This is a minor suggestion, but I believe it will make the game feel more intuitive.

When you talk to a scout or are directed to an area of the map in game, the map will pan to the area in question then circle it to make the target location more obvious.

I suggest that when a player sends map information in chat, in addition to just opening up the world map and panning there, to circle the target as well. This would streamline the feel of both player and game initiated map information.

Hello everyone, I wanted to share my feedback.

When I first heard the information on F2P leaked, I was legitimately concerned. I have been part of this wonderful community since GW1 and am so pleased to see it continue its constructive and friendly ways in GW2. I knew that Anet has been trying to remove barriers to players but was worried this was a step too far. I believed that Anet should have at least a small fee for the effort they put forward making this game. Not only do they deserve a living for their work, but I also viewed the cost to buy the game a minimal but justifiable way to keep the game and its community at the high level of quality it currently is by filtering out what F2P may bring.

After reading the information Anet has posted about F2P, I gladly admit I’m looking forward to it with them. Anet has at every point that I have seen since the beginning of GW1 made very careful and thoughtful plans. They are like surgeons, making precision moves to make everything work. I believe they have done it again. From reading the posts, it looks like they are making a very balanced approach at introducing F2P.

It will give people who want to try it before they buy it an ideal platform to do just that. Heck, if they are willing to live with the limitations they don’t have to pay a cent. That said, I do not doubt many people will see how amazing this game is and gladly get the core or other versions. I also believe they have limited the potential to abuse the community in a way that will not severely limit someone who is trying out the game for fun.

Anet, thank you as always for being so careful. It is not just your community that is at stake, it is ours. We are all custodians of what we have built so far. I look forward to helping many new friends in game.

supermanboy.4592

Prior to the big patch, I went down the marksmenship line to get the 10% damage bonus. The bonus is still there, but it appears that wilderness survival yields more damage now. Please check my math:

Marksmanship
Steady Focus: +10% damage when endurance is full.
- With my stats at level 80 my shortbow skill 1 lists 266 damage per attack.
- I get about 2 attacks per second.
- Therefore, I do about 532 damage per second.
- 10% of this is 53.2 dps, or the bonus damage from the trait.

Wilderness Survival
Expertise Training – Pets get 300 condition damage and 20% improved condition duration.

Refined Toxins When above 90% hp, you and your pet inflict poison with a 10 second cooldown.
- I have 717 condition damage so my poisons do 46 dps (taking cooldown into consideration).
- My pet with Expertise training, would have 300 condition damage, and do 30.9 poison dps (taking cooldown into consideration).
- Therefore this trait yields 76.8 dps.

From the comparison 76.8>53.2 so wilderness survival easily deals more damage than marksmanship. Yes, I realize that there is an initial increased damage due to first strike but that is not sustained in combat unless you get fury lots and are traited like that (I am neither). I also realize can get improved crits from marksmanship but it would only even out the difference in dps. Lastly, I also realize poison is only applied to one target where the 10% damage from marks is applied to all if you have penetrating arrows. I also assume the damage bonus is for direct/crit damage only.

So if the damage from marks is equal to wilderness at best, wilderness should still be better given the high level of utility from the damage reduction traits (Companion’s Defense and Bark Skin).

What are your thoughts? Wilderness survival is the easy winner here for shortbows.

General Discussion of the Last Big Patch

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: supermanboy.4592

supermanboy.4592

Hello everyone,

As you know, the last big patch was a huge revision of the trait structure. I pve for the most part, I enjoyed having the ability to use lower level traits in my build since there are quite a few with a high level of utility. It also allowed for a large variety of builds to be created.

I have found with the new traits, I’m having a hard time making builds for most of my characters. The way I was set up before isn’t offered for the most part for builds and I find I’m taking traits I really don’t care for to get to ones I do, as opposed to pretty much using all and only the traits I wanted. Overall the changes are so large that I’ve had to completely rethink the builds for most of my characters since my old builds have no equivalent now.

So this is my question: in terms of pve, how do you believe the new traits are structured?

This will give me a hint at the best way to rebuild my characters. It appears to me that they’ve tried making a lot of synergy for boons, conditions and the profession activated skills. Those benefits would compound on themselves and give players more incentive to use activated profession skills (F1-F4). Do you also find you’re taking traits you don’t particularly care for or would use, just to get one further down the line? Do you enjoy the ability to max out 3 trait lines?

Disclaimer: Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t negative feedback and I’m always open to new things, I just haven’t quite wrapped my head around this yet. I’m looking forward to testing things out.

HoT Price Feedback + Base game included [merged]

supermanboy.4592

I wanted to offer my feedback on the pricing structure of HoT and other potential expansions. Anet said in their announcement that they appreciate hearing our thoughts, and I always view that as a personal invitation for me.

What do I think about players in the future getting any expansion and the core game for one price, though I would have paid at least twice as much to get to the same point (core+expansion)? I think it is a great idea and I’m glad to see Anet is continuing their tradition of creative and practical solutions.

I don’t care that “I would have overall paid more for the same thing” because as it stands, I would have played the game for much longer and have got more out of it than someone just starting. I also like the fact that if one of my friends who wanted to play after an expansion, they wouldn’t have to invest an enormous amount of money to have access to the content I’d be playing at that point. That truly would be a barrier.

Thank you for doing this Anet, it keeps the doors wide open for new people who want to come and play this amazing game. It is also an excellent and understood structure should you make any expansions for expansions. I look forward to HoT, and all other chapters and expansions you bring out in the future.

The Sigil Dilema

Accuracy and fire.

Accuracy +7% crit chance because that’s going to affect conditions along with physical damage.

Fire because despite what you said, general PvE rarely consists of single targets.

Conditions do not crit as stated in the Notes section of the wiki.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Critical_hit

Also , for the fire sigil to do as much dps as air, you would have to hit 4 targets each time it activates. I do dungeons with other chars, this is my general purpose build for overworld zones and typically do not encounter that many enemies at once. I also have piercing arrows so I hit multiple targets anyway.

The Sigil Dilema

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: supermanboy.4592

supermanboy.4592

Hello everyone. I’ve made my pve ranger to be the jack of all trades, master of none. He’s got full celestial/divinity. I love the build/utility of him but am having a hard time trying to nail down sigils. He uses a GS and short bow, it is the short bow in question.

I wanted to have one combat related and one utility related sigil on the bow and can’t decide. The trouble is the short bow’s auto damage is half straight damage and have condition.

Air – I have a 36% crit rate so this provides the highest dps and is currently on my bow.
Fire – Highest damage if there are multiple targets, which is not usually the case. I want good fast damage for general pve solo play.
Blood – Same single target dps (if not slightly higher) than Fire, but gives the added benefit of healing. Thing is, I don’t normally need the heals so the heal is a waste typically. Also, if I did need a heal this would not be nearly enough to save me.
Strength/Earth/Perception – Regardless of the damage mechanism, the dps works out to nearly exactly the same of 74 dps.
Force – Lower dps than all others mentioned (given my short bow attack is made up partially of conditional damage. The physical portion isn’t high enough to really take advantage of this).

Now for possible utility sigils:

Life – I have lots of natural regeneration (signet + trait) for myself and pet so having contstant dependable heals sounds appealing. However, again I am not typically getting hit so it seems a waste.
Momentum – Lots of potential here as a utility sigil since I take less base damage. Again, I am not typically getting hit.
Luck – As much as I like random boons (which are great in combat with lots of enemies) it does not benefit you during battle until something dies. Since I’m just running around doing dailies this again seems a waste. Also, after combat when I’m running to the next area the boon is random and short lived.
Speed – This would be very useful except I use the sigil which grants 25% permanent speed boost reducing the overall benefit greatly.
Water – Will heal the area around my target, which would typically be my pet (who really doesn’t take a lot of damage). This is nice in groups for champs, but the majority of the time I’m taking down regular enemies.

In closing, at the moment I’m leaning towards air/bloodlust. The utility sigils do not seem to give enough of a benefit to my char/play style to justify using them. While having another combat sigil makes the fight faster. Air has the highest dps followed by bloodlust (even though only a portion of my damage is straight).

Is there anything I am missing? What are your thoughts/recommendations?

I’d like to hear more about Anet’s reasoning to removing MF from the game. I’ve played quite a few games with a similar stat, and like it. Yes, it is a trade-off to sacrifice other attributes in place of getting better loot, but it makes the game more challenging. I may be more squishy and do less damage, but I get better loot and it requires more skill on my part. I am also not sure how this will affect the economy long term. I suspect it will help to even out the wealth distribution slightly, but I would be surprised if this is anything more than minor.

There is another potential issue. I’m a completionist, I want to get and do everything. However, with a living story you only get a set period of time to do stuff. Combine this with the fact that life is unpredictable, and can potentially prevent you from having quality GW2 time for long durations, that means that I miss out on things I will never be able to catch up on again. Anet is so creative, I enjoy what they do and to miss out on it and not ever have the ability to participate again sort of sucks. Also, if you are worrying about trying to do everything, you don’t play the rest of the game. My worry is that living content comes out so fast it will side track the rest of the game for people who want to experience as much as they can since they could play the rest of the game “any other time.”

Please, please Anet make Skritt a playable race! I’d immediately delete my thief and make him a Skritt! Just imagine given how creative Anet is how interesting and fun the Skritt story will be. There is so much depth and potential to work with.

I got Dusk and Dawn almost back to back in one session with the forge in November.

There is a ceiling on how high precursor prices will go, eventually there is a threshold where instead of paying 1000 gold (arbitrary number) for it on the TP, it pays to just use the gold for MF attempts.

Some people are lucky and get it after only 50 gold, others are unlucky and it takes 750 gold. If you haven’t gotten it after 1000 gold, either you’re the unluckiest player alive or you’re lying.

I’d love to know how people are making this much money. I’m a casual player, and am having a hard time getting all exotic gear even. I’ll start doing more wvwvw and fractals to see how profitable they are, but dang… 1000g… must be nice to have those kinds of troubles.

Feel free to send me a private message if you are not comfortable telling me in the public forum, I promise to deny everything. (For the record, I’m not willing to play 8 hours a day either. hehe)

Comment on Upcoming Changes to Dailies

I haven’t had too much difficulty getting any of the daily requirements. Here is what I do for my dailies:

Kill Variety – Back when this required more than 15 types, if I wanted to get them all quickly (less than 10 to 15 min) I ported to Overlake Haven. I’d run east to the Destroyer area, then up the river to take you to the vista overlooking the village by the floating castle killing each type of monster along the way. If I remember correctly, if you got the hawk by the castle and the raptor there were at least 17 different enemy types.

Daily Kills – If you’re actually killing things while you play you shouldn’t have trouble getting this without extra effort.

Daily Veteran Killer – In the southern shores of Southsun Cove there are Veteran Sea Scorpions all over. You can kill 5 easily here.

Underwater Kills – The nice thing about this is that it applies for anything you kill with your aquatic weapon set out: even critters. There are tuna all over the place in the southwestern part of Southsun Cove.

Dodger – If this is the daily, I aim to get at least one dodge per enemy. This way I can still do it casually but am assured of getting the requirement. My favorite place for this again is Southsun Cove. The Young Karka attempt to shoot you with 5 bolts of web when they first attack, if you dodge just after they notice you, you can get 2 or 3 dodges.

Healer – The reactor in Metrica Province is full of corpses to heal.

Visit Laurel Vendor – This is more of a chore than a challenge.

Daily Crafter – I typically turn 10 basic raw materials into refined materials (eg – copper ore to ingots).

As you can see, I do a lot in Southsun cove. However, there are lots of other places that offer the same types of benefits. Also, instead of trying to do all of these on one character I do some on one and some on another (or a couple more). That way I save on the map travel, spread out the xp and get it done fast.

A Long Belated Thank You

Disclaimer: I attempted to post this in the Wintersday section, however since it is an archive I cannot add new threads.

I realize that this event has been over for quite some time now, but I haven’t been able to play/write much in the last month or so.

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Infiniarium, it was a total blast. Destroying miniature cities is somehow so gratifying. Thank you for the good times. I enjoyed the entire event and all of the decorations as a whole. You guys bring such creative art to a living game. Looking forward to so much more!

Hello everyone,

I was reading through some Fire and Frost stuff and came across a note on potential changes to dailies I would like to comment on. The changes stated basically that you could choose which dailies you wanted to do. Personally, I like the way dailies are at the moment and for a few reasons think they should stay that way.

Initially the daily activity consisted of the same four categories: getting a certain kill count, killing a certain number of creatures, collecting a certain number of resources and taking part in a certain number of events. The type and number of requirements was always the same. When you keep things the same all the time you have only a certain amount of replayability before it gets “old.”

Currently, the daily requirements are random. Meaning that you may need to revive allies one day, but not the next. There is variety in this. Not only does this improve replayability by “mixing it up,” but it gives you a full variety and it is random. Yes, that means that some days you may get the one or two types of requirements which are not your favorite, but honestly that is in part what makes it so much fun. It also makes you appreciate the ones you do like more.

By allowing players to choose their own dailies, I’m assuming that people will typically choose their favorites. This in turn, will turn the system into something similar to the original system: the same type of requirements which will again reduce the relative replayability when compared to the random system. Now, I have not seen the new system or know in detail how it will work but that is my 2 cents. I worry (ever so slightly) that this will detract slightly from the game so I just wanted to mention it to see what everyone else thinks. I know Anet always puts a great deal of thought into their decisions and look forward to future updates!

I’d like to add my two cents in on this as well. I’d like a chance at the hat.

I realize that Anet is trying to make a special offer, and its ultimately up to them. I’m not going to go into a big long description of “giving everyone equal opportunity” for the hat. However I will leave it at this, I played and loved GW1. I got each chapter’s collector edition and every special offer they made. I want the hat “not because I’m a loyal customer” but because I enjoy the Guild Wars series so much and want as much as they’ll let me get my greedy little money filled paws on. Merry Christmas everyone!

Wow, thanks Anet!

I’ve been told by people who weren’t even online during the event that they got their reward in the mail, but I was in the event and got nothing…

The facebook message said that the script that they used to send out the mail may take a few hours to get everyone.

On a side note, I did not get disconnected during the event. I played during the event but didn’t have time to stay for the entire final fight so I logged. Is the purpose of these gifts only for people who disconnected or for anyone who participated in the event at all? I’d feel guilty for keeping the items if it wasn’t just for participation.

I think this is a reasonable request and shouldn’t be too hard to implement. But seriously, how do you sell stuff on the TP by accident? I can totally understand double-clicking stuff on a merchant, but this is hilarious.

I keep one of each weapon type my profession can use in my invisible bag. I use them as the situation dictates. However, if i don’t keep careful track of what I’m selling while at the TP it is very easy to sell something you intended on keeping which has happened to me a couple of times.

Hello everyone,

I’ve sold a couple of items by mistake from my invisible bag at the trading post. As I understand it, the invisible bag was designed to prevent things like this from happening. It appears the “sell” feature at the trading post can still see inside invisible bags.

Can we please make it so this no longer occurs and invisible bags are truly safe? Thanks for your time!

Gold Deflation and Vendor Prices

I’d like to add 2 more cents to this topic now that we’ve been playing the game more. I’ve heard people say that Anet didn’t design the crafting system for people to make money. I’m cool with that, and am find with the way the TP operates atm.

For a very reasonable amount of money, a person leveling up their character can re-equip their armour/weapons that are of lower level. This is due to the fact that so many people find items, don’t need them and sell them for a small profit (compared to the vendor) on the TP. They get some extra coin, the player gets transitional gear for a good deal and everyone wins. The flip side of this is that you sell crafting materials you don’t need for a reasonable amount of money.

That said I expect that the best max level stuff will be significantly more since people will be making money and not really spending it on a whole lot (I’m not sure what the cash sinks are end game besides gems). I’m good with that too, the legendary stuff will be insanely expensive but I’m sure everything else will still be “reasonable.”
