Elitism and newer players

You can’t compare dungeons on this game with a game FFXIV’s without coming to the conclusion of GW2’s being really terrible, and that’s because we have had no maintenance on them for years.

When content is left to rot and no meaningful changes are made along with no new content that has engaging combat is implemented, this is what happens. Everybody hits the max level, everybody ends up repeating the exact same things over and over again and nobody feels like settling for less than what they’re used to.

So, about lupicus...

First of all, I’m not here to hate or anything like that, just curious. So let’s keep everything peaceful, mmk?

Why does everyone consider the infamous WoR “tactic” to be an inexcusable exploit? In general, how do you define the line between “bad design” and “exploit”? (“bad design” as in “it’s okay to take advantage of it”).

I don’t. It doesn’t even seem like an exploit to me, more like clever use of game mechanics that are working as intended.

Hard mode and lfg filters

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

One Note Chord.5031

Background:

The calls for filters demonstrate that the dungeon community is already fractured. But this shouldn’t be a surprise: different people want to play dungeons in different ways, and it’s stupid to prioritize being able to find people to play with as highly as Colin does in that answer. What’s important isn’t being able to find people to play with; it’s being able to find like-minded people to play with. That’s what filters facilitate. Filters embrace and cater to the divisions in the community. And if Anet are willing to add them, then their objection to hard mode dissolves.

I could even imagine hard mode helping with the existing issues, as long as the rewards aren’t horrid, by giving the people who currently do meta dungeon runs something else to do, so that they aren’t even trying to pug normal explorable dungeons. (I’m imagining something like the GW1 hard mode requirements—maybe dungeon master for dungeons, and fotm might not even need hard mode as long as we get higher levels at some point—but of course the implementation is a separate issue.)

I realize hard mode is probably more of a pipe dream than filters, but in principle, at least, if one of them is on Anet’s radar, I think the other should be, too.

Longbow Rangers are Broken

in Ranger

Posted by: jcbroe.4329

jcbroe.4329

This thread is a whole ton of “lols” and is kicking a dead horse. It’s a constant cycle of “bad player says something needs to be nerfed because they can’t deal with it. Other players explain why bad player is bad and offer numerous ways to counteract it. Bad player refuses logic, refuses to incorporate counters, continues to argue for nerfs.”

But here we go again anyhow:

  • Dodge. Just dodge. The best way to stop damage dealing skills from dealing damage to you. Do not dodge autoattacks. Dodge Rapid Fire. Dodge Point Blank shot, don’t stand in a Barrage.
  • Close the gap. Every class, even necros, have a gap closer (or closers). Many of them are 1200 range. Close the gap, and autos stop hurting. Dodge the Rapid Fire, and the LB stops hurting. At close range, since Rapid Fire is still a channel, you can actually just strafe through the rangers player model and 99% of peoples Rapid Fires will cancel channeling because they don’t react quick enough to let their camera autotrack you.
  • Do not engage a ranger on their terms. If they are on a perch, either find a way to engage them on the perch while taking minimal damage traversing to that location, or just leave. Good rangers will just find something else to do, bad (or aggressive) rangers will leave their advantageous spot to damage you and you can then fight them on more even terms.

Frequent remarks and subsequent responses:

  • Ranger LB is OP (with etc etc reasons basically singling out that the person making the complaint is bad). No. It isn’t even used in the top tier competitive area of the game, except for by one individual, who plays his absolute heart out to make it work. LB builds are thief food. They have bad matchups against most of the meta builds, especially without the Empathic Bond variant. They die to the breeze, and actually have poor reactive escape ability (versus preemptive escapes, which they are good at).

At lower tiers, people don’t know how to play, they don’t know how to dodge, and they don’t even know what skills to dodge. They don’t understand the game well enough other than do damage while trying to avoid damage, but they don’t know how to deal the damage they need to deal in every situation and as mentioned, what to avoid. So yes, just like with the old GS 100b warrior, the build wrecks bad players, but is wrecked in the competitive tiers of the game, which is the point of a well balanced game; to create skill hurdles to overcome to push players to be better without affecting the top tier balance of the game.

  • Ranger LB is easy to play. Both too subjective to determine and, contradictory though it is, wrong where it matters. Yes, if you are a bad player, you think getting wrecked by 1 or 2 skills is imbalanced. While at the same time, those bad players don’t realize that all a person has to do is memorize a single skill rotation and you don’t even have to look at the screen anymore to make a build like DD ele top tier viable. It is subjective because to an experienced player, there isn’t a single class in the game that is even difficult to play mechanically, and it is wrong because to an advanced competitive player, the LB ranger is easily beaten or ignored in most scenarios and the player playing it has to have perfect positioning, field awareness, and cooldown usage in order to not completely be a feeder and rez fodder.

The difference in the amount of buttons pressed by other classes to be equally or more effective is the difference between about 1-3 button presses. The game isn’t mechanically difficult to begin with, and with all “ease of use” skills in the game, LB follows suit; easy to use, easy to dodge.

  • Why are you so mad? I’m not. I’m just tired of people treating the game like it takes some sort of rocket science to play, except for when they want something nerfed. The game is easy to play, and highly casual friendly, neither of which are a bad thing. Asking for nerfs because you don’t agree with somethings playstyle or can’t figure out that there are easy ways that don’t even require a hard counter to beat is not okay, it is the sign of a bad player or a troll.

So to all people who think the LB needs a nerf, you are either bad players or trolls. Both of which can be remedied unless you lack intelligence, in which case, please stop posting forum threads, because I’m tired of getting infracted explaining to you that the reason you can’t comprehend why something is balanced and why you are bad is because your brain doesn’t work.

Dungeon Acquirement

No thank you. This is almost as bad as want to be able to inspect peoples gear. All it does is create isolation and trolling. The good effects of it are not outweighed by the bad that comes with it.

I don’t need to be bullied online, got enough of that in real life thank you much.

You are being bullied over the achievement points, that are not showing the truth.
They are not representing dungeon skills, and people will not let you join their party if you have low achievement.
So my idea is still better for you.

I have well over any amount of “required” AP for anything. No one would ever question my ability to ru na dungeon when using AP as the basis.

Fact is, however I make my own LFGs that take anyone of level appropriateness into my dungeon runs because I don’t take the approach that new people are inherently bad. We all had to learn.

People like me are teachers we help foster the Dungeon Community because that is what I do in this game (Fractals and Dungeons is 90% of my game time). I don’t want to see it become an elitist community so I take steps to prevent that. I would never want to isolate someone from doing something new. I want as many people as possible doing dungeons. The more they get run the more the data stacks up and maybe, just maybe ANet will some day add new dungeons for us all to enjoy.

And no, no it would NOT help anything to let someone see my achievements other than invade my privacy. I think its bad enough that anyone can see my AP as just a number inside the game. AP is not a determining factor to someone being very good.

In fact on my second account that was purchased and made not long ago, I have just under 2k AP, no one who doesn’t know me already would never know that I have another account with almost 4k hours and many many dungeon runs under my belt. I’ve been questioned before about my abilities on that account, and so I just left the party. I do not now, nor have I ever felt the need to “prove” myself for a dungeon run.

But, I have played many an MMO where the “inspect” function is a thing and I’ve seen first hand how much the negative attitude it fosters far out weighs not having to take someones word on something.

I hesitated a lot before posting this because it may not be the right place for it, nor will it be well received I think…

Please, pardon my poor English skills in advance.

First of all, I would like it if this post wasn’t deleted nor flooded, and above all not lost in the swarm of all the topics on this subforum.

I’m here to say something which I wanted to say for the longest time. The main thing that is to be noted is a point that happens to be true both about real life and videogames. In France we have a saying : “Il faut de tout pour faire un monde”. That means that we can’t make a world go round with only one type of people. Which also means that there has to be both casuals and elitists.

Now that this is said, do not flame me for taking the side of the elitists, which I’m obviously going to do.

I first want to talk about my experience in Guild Wars 2 and how it was made better thanks to the guys in the dungeon subforum. I first started with a Necro and leveled from 30 to 80 in the early times of the game only through dungeons. I was terribad and as such my experience was horrible. But I got to level 80, and started trying other content than the PvE. And then I leveled a Ranger to the level 80, so as to enjoy some variety in PvP and WvW I couldn’t have only with my Necro.

But it was only then that I discovered that what I love is the PvE content. And I found it hard, after grinding for my 3rd and 4th characters. Hopefully, while I was searching for info in order to get better and do less kitten, I stumbled upon the Guild Wars 2 Forums. They were the realm of great people who naturally became my GW2 role models. People like Brazil who gave me a reason to get my ranger back into PvE content, people like spoj who got me to renew my faith in power necros, guys like Dub, who gave me good laughs with his funny topics and reactions while I felt bored with my studies. I admire guys like Wethospu who showed that it was possible to do a legit Arah solo, while I couldn’t even finish a normal 5 people run in under three hours. People who have retired from GW2 like Strife are still helping today with their awesome guides. And there are many others, some of them even put up with me so as to allow me to get better. Amicable Pugs was the one who carefully guided me through my still unsuccessful Lupi solo attempts.

So this is my dungeon story, we have all had ours, and some yours were clearly better tales than others’. I just want to say that without those who you call the “elitist jerks”, but who I’ll call the “caring teachers”, I wouldn’t have had that much pleasure in GW2. They all responded gently ingame, which shows that their dedication is not that of trolls but more that of optimists. One just needs to see how they managed to stay calm and keep some faith in the forums.

And now that I’ve expressed my point on the “elitists”, who are to me the people that made the game as fun as it is now, I’ll go on to the other point. We need every kind of people to make this game a good place. Without the elitists, we’d still be stuck in PVT gear trying to facetank attacks instead of knowing how to properly manage encounters. But they can be harsh to people who remain stubborn, because even if they demonstrate their arguments with videos of them epicly killing difficult bosses, opinions don’t change, and the tiniest troll they make gets them banned.

Here comes the last point : GW2 is a great game and I even found the time to play it for nearly 1.5K hours while I was undertaking the most difficult preparatory classes France has to offer. What happened today thus saddened me to the highest point. Each time the majority of the player base (meaning the “casuals”, me included, probably), asked for something, they got it. Now that the hardcore players actually have something to defend game wise (read “Fractal levels debate”), they aren’t heard like they should be. It is them who have invested the most time in the game. We, the majority, played it and enjoyed it. They took it to a higher level and enjoyed it as well. We ask for more entertainment, but I feel like it shouldn’t impede with theirs.

This is no rant, it is mostly a thank you post to the community of “elitists”, who made my days in GW2 way funnier. Even as you’re talking of nothing but leaving, I still hope you will hop by sometimes to say hi. I never got to know any of you, but your humor, your mindsets and your dedication moved me. I wish you all the best, be it in another content of GW2, or elsewhere

Tl;dr version : Thanks, you elitists, you were the best thing that came to the game IMO

I have dealt with the gaming snobs through years of multiplayer play in various games. Some do deserve their place, but usually not…

A small portion of the elitists are people that are dedicated, efficient farmers that don’t want lesser skilled players slowing them down. Then again, I guess it’s natural to want others to pull their own weight— maybe a bit too serious, but I can respect and understand that. Nobody likes uncooperative teammates.

A large portion of elitists are people that think they are dedicated, efficient farmers. These people continually harp on the casual scum but are just mad that they spent hundreds of hours trying to perfect a cookie cutter build and not going anywhere. Thus, they hate noobs with a passion, because those people put so little effort yet there isn’t that much to differentiate them. Considering the nature of DR and the developer’s tendency to seemingly punish people for actually trying to play the game, the problem is compounded. In general, this group can easily be superior to the average player but never really improve since they think there’s only one proper way to play. They are the first to cry as the game evolves, causing their cookie cutter to drop in the trash. But they’ll stay around, sometimes still playing the game with decent skill but get increasingly bitter at newbies.

An equally large portion, that sometimes overlaps with the second, are terrible players that simply get carried by their teammates and think they are good as a result. They might have been skillful in the past, but their complacency caused it to decay. They need to team with the best, to compensate for their own deficiencies and can’t work with noobs. In reality, they are unable to lead or think on their own. Thus, having a less skilled player is bad for them and they lash out. Eventually, they run out of ways to hide their badness and end up quitting, typically by leaving a huge note to the community on why the game and its players suck and how they are a victim in a cruel world that won’t help them. Every time you hear “I’ve been playing since beta, you noob!”, you might be talking to one of these.

These later two groups will always go on about “challenge” and how the game is getting dumbed down at the expense of it, however when faced with actual adversity, they are the first to complain. Rather than try to salvage a situation with a lousy team and thus overcoming something, they will instead spend all their time berating whoever is in range, because, you know, it’s never their fault. In the end, they never learn to really improve.

Thus most can be ignored, unless they can reason out real arguments.

I, on the other hand, am a casual scum. But at least I don’t pretend that I’m anything else. That being said, it is not a good idea to act so defensive when another claims that one’s configuration is suboptimal or to ignore all advice just because one wants to do it their way, especially in a team setting.

TL;DR I respect those that actively study the game’s mechanics and devise strong strategies from it. I respect those that have their routine practiced to a tee and work together like a machine. I don’t respect those entitled tryhards that have to put down other people because they’ve hit a wall.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

Or “Let’s nip the bloody elitism in the bud”.

I’m not sure if I am the only one who has noticed, but there is a very nasty little trend developing on forums and ingame. I’m talking about the elitism and entitlement shown by certain players, particularly in terms of PvE.

This was one of the things that pushed me away from WoW – the horribly fragmented and exclusionary community.

I was under the impression that GW2, as more of a sandbox, had a more welcoming community. However in the 3 weeks since I started playing I’ve seen:

- People threatening to kick others because the class they play isn’t strong enough.
- People threatening to kick others because they are using a less than optimal MH weapon.
- Gear requirements on dungeon groups.
- People supporting certain classes being harder to level/play than others ‘because noobs’.

Basically the whole ‘everyone should play my way and only my way and I will actively block any attempt to do otherwise’.

Today this was especially obvious when the obnoxious sonic periscopes were nerfed in lowbie areas and we got wonderful responses like :

Just goes to show that ANET is babying the casuals once again.

Why would ANET remove the only challenge that PvE offered? I should get compensated for doing the monthly in “hard mode”.

Sigh…

If you want specific harder content made for you, then ask for it. But, as a lowbie who died several times to turret blasts out of nowhere when I first started, stop complaining about difficulty changes that don’t affect you in the least.

Let’s knock off this elitism now, so that this doesn’t become another one of ‘those’ MMO communities.

Anet should really implement countermeasures against that skipping plague.
theres enough stuff they could do to end this plague.
its just annoying for “new” players or those who enjoy clearing dungeons completely, fully exploring them asf.

hell they even start skipping storymode dungeons…because THEY CAN.

same reason over and over again:
“skip this”
“Y”
“time efficieny”
then same story over and over again:
first one dies on mobs running behind the leading skip/rusher
second one…
and so on.
end of story: time efficiency -100%

if u ask y they skip the boss xy, u almost always end up being told that they NEVER EVER tried to manage him, they just HEARD its hard and EVRYONE is skipping…
people who were running 100 times Ascalons never even heard of special chest after kholer, never figured out burrows tactics and so on…

i t is a painintheass to find proper people taking their time and have fun doing the ONE AND ONLY maximum efficient runs:
clear evrything, get most money out of it, most exp (in points AND knowledge) and most loot in the shortest time possible. oh and most fun for my part
(we managed to clear the “so-called” harder paths of some dungeons even with 4 newbs with subpar equip so noone tell me its too hard)

THATS EFFICIENCY FOLKS.

and dont forget to equip toughness and vitality and use some more skills than the one who make damage…

so please Anet do something to EDUCATE people to play the way it is meant to be done.

thx

Am I the only person that truly enjoys playing this game?

LoL, bear with me, please. Here’s how this question popped into my head. I had a lot, and I mean a LOT of down time today at work, so of course I’m just tooling around on my iPhone and figure I’ll hit up the GW2 forums for a few laughs. As I’m reading through the posts for the various classes- and trust me I read through what must have been 50 posted topics scattered between the various classes and the running trend is that every class is “broken” and “unplayable”, Anet HATES US ALL, and THIS GAME SUCKS- THEY BROKED MY CLASS!!!!!

Bwahahahaha!!! My sides were splitting, seriously. I guess it doesn’t help that all the people, each and every one of them, that were whining and crying on these forums typed their responses like they dropped out of the sixth grade. I digress, however

I just thought I would share my observations with you guys and I’m hoping that we can start some sort of positive feedback for the developers at Arena Net. After all, they’ve marketed a great product that has brought at least me, and hopefully a majority of others a lot of fun and entertainment.

I’ll catch you guys later, I’m off to troll some mouth breathers before I actually go into the game!

Just because it’s only in GW2 does not mean GW2 is the problem (I’ve had OCs that were perfectly fine EVERYWHERE but GW2, including P95 blend for 20+ hours). Maybe instead of kittening and blaming it on the devs, you should post some info and ask for help. GW2 puts loads of stress on your system, so if there is even the slightest bit of instability, it will crash.

There are major optimization issues with the game engine atm, but daily BSODs and crashes suggest (quite strongly) that your system is not stable.

Thieves as well? I hope this is only for pve and not pvp because thieves are the last thing that needs a buff.

Most thieves don’t make it out of the lower tiers because you can mitigate them very easily. As a ranger I shut thieves down all the time who don’t use venoms, especially if you have something like healing spring and Lightning reflexes. One fixes stun, one fixes immob/cripple, and then it’s just dodge rolls at the right moment and CC to shut them down. Also bring wolf for f2 and stay nearby when thieves start doing their stealthy bit, and then be ready to watch them flee in terror.
That of course means their build options are highly limited, and when that happens people can hard counter you more easily.

The changes for rangers coming in this next patch are a step in the right direction for them. I am not part of that team so I won’t be announcing any of the changes unless told otherwise.

GW2 makes other MMO's very dated

So yesterday after getting like my 5th recent e-mail both from Blizzard and Bioware, to come back to WOW and SWTOR respectively, I decided to fire them up to see what I’ve been missing.

In a nutshell..not much. I played TOR until GW2 came online and managed to max out 4 characters. So as its ftp, somewhat; I logged on to TOR to see how the game had evolved since launch. I was suprised about how dated it really felt compared to Guild wars 2.

People still shouting looking for tanks and healers, no dodge…no dynamic events, regular quests. And WOW is exactly the same. They were both good games of a time but I honestly cannot go back to playing these kinds of games after the innovations that GW2 has brought to the genre.

Guild Wars 2 may have it’s flaws, many of which are discussed ad nauseum on these boards, but the fundemental game has moved the genre on. Now if only they could combine some of the still usefull features of the old games to this new engine, then we would have a redefining MMO experience.
