So, having had extremely bad luck with essences (>1800 tokens, still no Glob of Coagulated Mists Essence, and only 1 Vial), I’d like to know where I should look now to get the Glob. Patch notes say:
Vials of Condensed Mists Essence no longer drop after scale 10.
Globs of Coagulated Mists Essence no longer drop after scale 20.
Does this mean that the Globs will still drop on scale 20, as it seems to say?

You don’t need or have to get max stat gear if it’s too much work for you. If you think the leveling process is too long, then you might want to stack more xp boosts, because the level cap will be raised in the future.
…
GW2 is a big boy’s game, and those big boys want their journey to be as long and hard as possible.
Nobody is going to kill you if you accept that you don’t have what it takes to stay on top. Feeling entitled to be on the same stair step with people that worked hard for it however doesn’t make you any friends. Be humble, know your place.
GW2 is a harsher environment, and the falloff rate for aspiring dedicated players is far higher, but that is what is needed to allow the masses dedicated players to feel a sense of superiority without breaking the game for those who decide to underperform.
This is what is wrong with vertical progression.
I’d like to add my voice to this thread for official SMAA as well. The injector works, but also blurs the UI.
For those that use only SweetFX for SMAA like I do, you may want to look at the original injector instead:
http://mrhaandi.blogspot.sg/p/injectsmaa.html
Hopefully Anet puts this antialiasing technique into the game as an official option.
Please add a unique cosmetic reward (like the fractal weapon skins) that let other players know you have defeated a difficult boss / dungeon route (e.g. Lupicus).
If this reward visually upgradeable, so that you can tell who’s beaten him once and who has consistently beaten him several times, it would add prestige to players who are able to do paths of a dungeon that are considered difficult.
Edit: Also, boss rush mode would be nice.

My group just got Dredge, Cliffside(bugged), and Swamp on 20. It took ~1.5 hours, most of it Cliffside. If Swamp was replaced with Grawl it’d have gone up, definitely.
Reducing the number of maps to fight on when there is already a always queue on T1 servers on weekends to get into WvW isn’t a good idea.
However, if we introduced an attractive (in terms of loot, rewards etc) WvW only zone that you only had access to if you were winning in WvW …

What if the top-tier/BiS is very easy to get, but that it could be continually upgraded in small increments via “enchanting?” Let’s suppose that +stat upgrade on a piece of gear is open-ended, but that the cost goes up exponentially as you want to put more and more +stats on it.
I love this idea. Here’s how they might be able to implement this:
1. You can “enchant” top-tier items so they get stronger. To let players know how far they’ve managed to do this, each successful enchant adds a +1 to the name of the item. Hence, a sword that has been enchanted five times would be “Sword +5”.
2. The first few enchanting levels will always succeed. However, to make the cost go up exponentially, as you suggest, each tier of levels after that will have a random chance to fail. Failure means your item decreases a random number of enchantment levels.
3. To make things more in line with the recent focus on RNG, we will also introduce the chance for an enchantment to fail critically. A critical failure causes the item to break. Broken items cannot be used, but can be repaired using an item from the cash shop, or can be recombined in the mystic forge using some t6 material, ectos, and the original broken item.
4. To balance this all out, an item that allows you to guarantee a successful enchant should also be introduced in the cash shop, so that casual players are able to keep up.
This is just a rough guideline, but I’m sure that Arenanet, backed by the massive MMORPG experience of NCSoft and hence Nexon, will be able to make sure that their implementation of this will be flawless.
What happened to hard work? To doing something you don’t like but persevering? And after all that effort, being rewarded for it?
What happened to playing a game to do what you enjoy and have fun? I can do this too, but as you can hopefully now see, that’s not what the original poster is talking about.
I also think the “general” monthly shouldn’t include a specific dungeon in it – it just makes it so there’s even less reason to do anything else.

Hardships bond people with what they are spending their time on. If you think people don’t want hardships then you are probably an FPS player or a WoW generationer. Sorry for the generalization beforehand….but I try to make a point.
You bring up a very relevent and interesting point by mentioning the FPS genre, if only unfortunately in an attempt to deride people who play games that you apparently hold in distaste.
The “hardship” players face in games like FPSes is not derived from contrived “numerical” difficulty like Agony or number inflation, but rather from the fact that players will have difficulty besting a better player in that genre. Consider the sniper vs sniper scenario. The better sniper will almost always win if they face each other head-on. Satisfaction is derived when the “less-skilled” sniper beats the better one either by cunning, teamplay, or bettering himself so he is now as good as, or better than, the opponent.
Hopefully this post will convince you that FPS players are gamers like you are, and not some sub-human species who demand only instant gratification.

You’ll do better just earning gold and buying the precursor you want, I think. At very least, you eliminate the random element.
The tiny number of us who pay for 100% of every upgrade ourselves (thanks for failing Anet) are permenently BROKE because of WvW.
Thats why lots of people have quit WvW.
And OP- yes if you wanna make money you have to do dungeons and fractals. Also if you wanna get the best gear YOU HAVE TO do fractals.
This bears repeating. WvW is a large gold sink – mitigated only by the fact that large WvW guilds pool their gold for the greater good. Whether a players pays for it completely out of their own pockets or not isn’t the point.
Also, sometimes no one buys upgrades. Every WvW player has been there. You pay for the upgrade or it simply doesn’t happen – even the cheap ones like Dolyak supply. Players like Lordrosicky should be encouraged, and not told to “find a WvW guild”.
The ethics of random chests is interesting.
The Japanese government is regulating the sales (read: banned) a version of this sort of thing called “complete gacha”:
http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2012/05/gacha-watch-japan-social-games/
They’ve also banned “bingo gacha”, which is a variation of the same thing. “Gacha” is the Japanese term for random reward chests bought with cash. The word is Japanese onomatopaeia for a certain kind of random toy dispensing machine, much like gumball machines, which make that sound.
If it makes a whole nation uncomfortable, I’d say the ethics of this are pretty grey. Personally, I think random chests reflect poorly on the company selling them, as they are unscrupulous, underhanded, and have already demonstrated negative externalities in Japan.
Edge? An edge based on gear. And more importantly, a gear edge because you spent more time online to get it than someone else.
How about an edge based on skill? The fact you are getting better at your profession, better with certain weapons not because of your gear but because of you.
I agree. Prior to this patch I thought GW2’s progression came in the form of getting better at the game over several classes, much like fighting games. I see now that I was mistaken – I only use the term “edge” as it was used in the official post here:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/linsey-murdock-unveils-new-high-end-ascended-gear/
“Eventually, you’ll be able to kit yourself out with a full set of Ascended gear and high end Infusions to help give you the edge in end game content.”
Some bought this game for the PvE part of it. And others bought it for the PvP part.
Please do not force us Pvpers to run Dungeons just to maxed out our stats.
If Anet had planned for this, they should also think about us who just love to pvp.
Like PvP Honor Gear or something that we could earn by doing WvWvW or maybe even sPvP.
I have seen the rationale for this before in another MMO. This is because adding “easily obtainable” (in the eyes of the PvE players) gear that is on par with the top-end PvE reduces the desirability of the gear. This is conjecture, but at the moment this is possibly why it is only obtainable in PvE.
If they follow in the footsteps of that other MMO, as they add new ascended slot items in new dungeons, the old slot items will gradually become more easily obtainable by other means, so that the other players feel included while at the same time letting the top-end PvE players feel like they are maintaining their “edge”. Everyone is “happy”, the PvPers and casuals just slightly later than the hardcore PvErs.
This is purely a guess; there is no indication that anything like this at all will happen. It’s just a possible reason for why they are doing things the way they are right now – one answer to your question.

The funny thing is, this poll is something Arenanet could’ve (and should’ve) done with a far larger and more relevant sample size with the in-game feedback tool, back when the game released.
Yes, it is an artificial barrier. All my guild mates are as geared up as I am and I know we work well together. We’ve cleared every dungeon in the game. I’m at a higher fractal level because I’ve had time to play this weekend, but some of them are working on the weekend.
They come back, and now if we want them to play on our level we need to spend time doing low difficulty levels even though I know for a fact they will be able to handle the level I’m on just fine.
That’s time they could’ve spent doing something else, even if we account for time spent explaining the dungeon and mistakes caused by it being their first run.
(edited by xeph.8410)
I’m sorry, that was not my intention, I do indeed mean high difficulty content. I will edit my post to read as such.
Fractal leveling is a nice mechanic that can encourage team work and helpfulness in the community. You help players obtain higher levels, so they can help you and others down the road. If finding groups becomes an issue, it’s not a failure of the design. It’s a failure of the community behaving like a community.
I agree with most of the points in your post, except for this little segment, which I disagree with.
Fractal levels are designed to keep players out of higher difficulty content. Otherwise, they wouldn’t exist at all and you’d be able to pick the level you want regardless of “lowest common group fractal level.”
It takes time to increase a player’s fractal level. Players at a high fractal level have no reason to play at lower levels, except to help other players on the off-chance that they too may get to that level in the future. If the player is a random player they might, or that player might never see them again.
If the fractal level did not lock players out of higher difficulties players would not be blocked from joining groups at all. In fact, this even blocks guild runs because if you want to bring in a guild mate you have to get them up to scratch as well.

If you got this far and are curious about the title of this post that’s how the bait and shift works when you advertise one thing and deliver something unexpected.
+1, it’s almost like I fired up GW2.
sequential nature
There was no sequential nature before.
You could do anything at all and get to 80.
There is a sequence now – grinding Fractals for tokens, to get gear and infusions.
Some people like this, others don’t.
The thought process for those players is that they don’t want to play with “noobs” so instead of giving a player a chance to see how he/she does they try to judge people by some artificial number which in no way or form really tells you anything about players ability to finish a dungeon.
When there is a large difference in the ability to attain armour by players, it becomes the easiest way to differentiate experienced players from inexperienced ones.
there is a +5 stat difference between the exotic and asceneded

I doubt there is anything we can do to reverse this decision. Every single piece of PR out of Anet right now is the company line – which makes sense, and if I were an employee at Anet and wanted to keep my job I’d be doing the same thing.
As saddened as I am by this, it is Anet’s decision to do go through with this, just as it is my decision to play or no longer play this game. That’s about all we can do, I think.
Dhar, you know this SBI has classically been absolutely awful on keep defense. For the past three months, a constant theme on our mapchat is:
“Guys, we need communications, we just lost a fully upgraded <tower/keep/stonemist> because there was no one there to man the siege. PLEASE DEFEND.”
I love this server, and it’s gotten to the point where I’m not even frustrated anymore. To me this is the charm of SBI.
Only 2.75% stronger and 100 over pages of complaints.
Amazing.Although 2.75% is insignificant
Your math is off. Instead of doing it again, read this:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/13529x/ascended_gear_is_a_halftier_increase_math/TL;DR – it is roughly 8.5% stronger.
2. You don’t understand WvW/PvP players. It could be 0.05% stronger for all we care. What matters is that it is stronger, and anything that isn’t the best isn’t good enough. If you feel like you’re representative of people who enjoy PvE progression and must speak out then by all means do so, but we’d appreciate it if you don’t pretend to speak for the PvPers as well.
Isn’t every 20 stats increment = 1% increment in actual combat?
Were they calculating percentage difference based on “stats” or “stats towards actual combat capabilities”?If they did not take into consideration that every 20 stats = 1% increment, it would be off.
2. For your info, majority who doesn’t PVE much but played for WvWvW are using the masterwork tier instead of exotic.
1. Please explain “actual combat” metric that you speak of. Actual combat is affected by too many variables. Stats are stats.
2. For your info, the majority of the statements that are sweeping generalisations turn out to be incorrect. Please support your statement with data and let us know what assumptions you are making. I play on a T1 server, and I assure you that any group you face in WvW in this matchup will be kit out in exotics.
See? I can do this too.
It doens’t matter if the “majority” of players wear masterwork, play the game naked in front of their PCs, or enjoy singing in the rain. That’s besides the point.
The point is, there is a new tier of gear, it is significant stats-wise, and WvW/PvP players dislike gear progression.

There’s two holes in that. Firstly, it’s only applicable to the dungeon itself, not outside it. Even right now, a good player in Masterwork armor will kill a bad one wearing Exotics. Same thing is going to happen.
This is meaningless. Good players do not wish to kill bad ones.
Killing a bad player is unsatisfying to both sides, all it becomes is a one-sided match that nobody enjoys. Good players wish to compete on equal footing with other good players, because that is when the game is the most enjoyable to both parties.
It constantly amazes me how many people think that Legendary items are better than Exotics.
Your signature, by the way, is very apt.
Yes better as in they have more pleasing aesthetics and cool effects.
If you realise that Legendaries and Exotics have the same stats, then surely you must realise that Ascended gear with better stats than Exotic is exactly what you call “armor as higher than legendary.”
now if they add something like godly armor as higher than legendary THAT right there would be a gear hamster wheel.
Ascended gear is welcomed with open arms, people complain about gear hamster wheel but they do not see that ascended gear is just in between exotic and legendary, now if they add something like godly armor as higher than legendary THAT right there would be a gear hamster wheel.

A distributor.
I suspect that ANet wasn’t responding to forum feedback here. I suspect this development is more due to pressure from the Big Bosses, who seem to think there is only one template for a successful MMO.
You see, as someone who played City of Heroes for 8 years, I’ve been here before. The common denominator: NCSoft.
At its heart, I think this is all the result of: 1. culture clash and 2. a dysfunctional corporate methodology (that is plaguing just about every big distributor these days, not just NCSoft).
I suspect that if ANet had been left to its own devices, we wouldn’t be seeing this shift in design trajectory. Unfortunately, a great deal is resting on the success of this title, and NCSoft has recently restructured and ‘streamlined’ its focus.
In light of that, this all makes a certain amount of (depressing) sense.
As someone who hasn’t played any other NCSoft subsidiary title before, could you provide further details? I’m interested in knowing how it turned out for you in City of Heroes. Did the developers manage to stick to their guns in the end? Since you played it for eight years I imagine you must have enjoyed the game despite issues like this coming up.
There was even map completion. Optional, of course.
A lot of good ideas in this thread, I think we’d have a solid progression based game on our hands if these were implemented. If not, please add an API to access combat metrics and give us the ability to write add-ons so we may measure these for ourselves.
I assure you, I use this data only to measure my own performance, and never the performance of other players I play with.
No need for a check option when all you get is an extra +10 stats LOL.
Well then, do you have them or not? I need to be sure before I let you in my group. The Inspect function solves this handily.
So, Ascended could be WORSE than exotics, because of the lack of stats from upgrades!
Look carefully at the picture in the preview. The upgrades are BUILT into the Ascended item. The stats are flat out better. You lose customisability, but gain an infusion slot.
Simple. Anyone can get maxed Ascended gear in the future and compete in WvW on fair ground. Those who want to empower themselves in the hardest PvE content can use infusions to mitigate new PvE combat mechanics.
I can’t be the only one who is reading between the lines and not freaking out over one sentence.
I really hope you’re right. This would indeed be ideal.
What this does is introduce a set period of time that players who wish to do so now need to spend to collect Agony resistance gear before they are able to complete the new dungeon to their satisfaction.
Agony / contrived difficulty / grind / gear-based progression – call it what you will.
There is no other way to make a MMO other than using the treadmill. Theres no progression without a treadmill… How do you guys not see that, how can sitting in the same gear since you turned level 80, and downing bosses that don’t vary in toughness be fun!?
Why must there be progression at all?
Its not even close on the same level of gear progression as other MMOs. I dont see the big deal with this, they are probably introducing only 1-2 items every 2-3 months with slighly(And i do put emphasis on slightly) better stats.
What the hell is the problem here? You are making a big issue of a small thing.
But now it’s closer. You may not be, but some of us are only playing GW2 because we cannot stomach gear-progression. Any kind of gear progression at all is a disappointment. If I wanted gear-progression I’d go do it in some other game, like Progress Quest.
The devs said they’re really there for the fractal dungeon, which is a whole new mode of play. I really can’t see why everyone on these forums is freaking out about it, to be honest.
Chances are, Ascended gear can be used in WvW like any other piece of PvE gear. Of course, they could very well make it so it’s not – we do not know yet.
Uh oh, better watch out for that warrior with the extra 5 precision, I heard he can one shot people with just one auto-attack!
All gear treadmills start this way, have you played Age of Conan lately? Another game that was supposed to be about skill, not gear.
Why did you make a calm and reasoned response to this snark? Now you take away all my fun.
Edit for on topic response:
Jrunyon: An extra 5 precision is an extra 5 precision too much. Gear progression ruins competitive WvW gameplay.
(edited by xeph.8410)
FYI, Legendary and Exotic currently have the same stats.
The devs said they’re really there for the fractal dungeon, which is a whole new mode of play. I really can’t see why everyone on these forums is freaking out about it, to be honest.

You didn’t even take the trouble to check the game’s front page?
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/linsey-murdock-unveils-new-high-end-ascended-gear/
and I don’t know why you guys keep saying that to be good at something you need the best gear. That’s half the problem right there.
When I make a mistake and get punished for it, I want to know that it was completely because I did something wrong – I used a skill at the wrong time, did not move correctly, did not use the right cooldowns, etc.
The possibility that it was because my gear wasn’t good enough is extremely distasteful, and I am certain I am not alone in thinking this way.
Edit: Note: I am not disagreeing with you, just providing a reason for why people want the best gear. This is why I’m very uncomfortable the new increased stats on Ascended items.
(edited by xeph.8410)
Very disappointed with the stat increases over Exotic on Ascended gear. Might go do something else for a while… was not expecting power creep in GW2.
