Helpful trick: If you wipe, you can pull the spiders into the beginning of the hallway, around the bend away from the Nightmare tree. Takes time, but so long as nobody is in range of the head shake, the tree won’t spawn additional spiders. This will allow you to make another attempt more cleanly.

In order to defeat the last boss of TA F/U, the best way to solo carry a horrible pug is to use a guardian and use this OP build, you will literally be able to roll your face on the keyboard and the boss will die along with all spiders.

It is sad that we have to use a broken ridiculously overbuffed set up to deal with this equally broken encounter but until anet fixes it it is the only way for us get the rewards we deserve.

I just did that in a completely non meta group with one pug. Engineer, Guardian, Elementalist, Warrior and the one pug was an ele that was using the classic arcana/water traits so not much dps. We killed the end boss fine.

I really doubt the one guy is talking about the right path.

The other guy probably had the ultra specific group composition and voice chat while training as a team. Guess what? Not everyone has access to that.

I’m pretty sure Nikaido knows what path he’s talking about… Especially seeing how he’s been trolling the official forums for months now with video’s of him doing the boss naked, without reflects, while playing absolutely terribly etc.

And, if you don’t want to use voice chat, that’s up to you. Even without voice chat, you can kill that boss just fine, with pretty much any group comp.

I made my own party twice.

After that, never again. I stuck with the farmers on my friend list after that. My standard of proper rotations and proper gear were apparently too much for pugs (omg 3 silver for sigils!) and it drove me up the wall when they made excuses.

Really, who designed this? This has to be one of the worst boss designs I’ve ever seen. “Let’s make a boss that endlessly spawns ranged, high damage adds. And then let’s make them come from all directions so that wall of reflection is useless. Yeah! Now we’ll add in some poison cones that every silver spider mob has which goes through reflects and can instagib lighter armored characters. And let’s count the boss as a structure so it can’t be crit! Hell yes!”

Exactly you had difficulty getting a party going. Most explorable TA PUGs want to do the up path and a few want to do the forward/forward path.

I love how people are saying try different tactics while completely ignoring that those tactics require specialized group compositions. You can build those for high end dungeons. Hardly anyone wants to waste time specializing for the TA F/U path as the incentive is low for many and the boss frustrates many.

What are you going to prove by acting elitist over beating this path? That you picked a guardian team and coordinated reflects over voice chat? Granted, coordinating reflects is very hard for PUGs. Although if you have a team that trains together, then that is easy and nothing special.

I’ve done it in a pug too. All I did was advertise in such a way that I didn’t get complete dunces before I started the run.

I talked to an officer in my guild about it. He stated that the path became more difficult (next to impossible) because of a change or bug that caused more spiders (including powerful recluses which he said were not there before) to spawn.

Sure enough, in the dungeon guide video in the stickied thread, there are significantly fewer spiders and no recluse spiders at any point during the boss fight on the video walkthrough. When I attempted it today, the group was almost immediately swarmed with them, even on the first attempt – that’s a significant difference in difficulty as opposed to what was shown in the guide.

I’m convinced that there is a bug (or really stupid change) that’s making the boss more difficult than intended.

At the very least, the adds should despawn after each party wipe / time the boss resets. It’s downright ridiculous that they stick around to make consecutive attempts more difficult.

No they don’t. I’m guessing that players have lost the common knowledge of how to do it properly because they’ve sat behind walls of reflection too often. I haven’t been on this path recently but even way back it used to look impossible, impossible until the group learned to dodge at the right time so that the nightmare tree couldn’t create any more spiders (with its attack that creates spiders when it hits).

You don’t even have to use reflections. You can literally dodge when the tree starts shaking and spiders won’t spawn.

The only reason there are less spiders when we’re killing him is because we kill him before he can spawn a lot of them. The spiders you see in our videos are the ones that spawn before you start the fight. And as Brazil pointed out, you can even dodge the spiders he spawns.

First of all, coordinating reflects isn’t hard, it just takes people with half a working brain to do.

Second of all, you don’t need reflects. Nikaido made a recording of one of our guild teams killing the boss with no reflects, while naked and in a plethora of other ways. He should post a few of his video’s here wink wink, nodge nodge .

You could do this in PUGs very easily with a minimum of coordination, since all you need to coordinate is your reflects, the problem with PUGs is just that their DPS in general is terrible, although this boss can’t be critted, so technically, even PUG DPS should be fine for this boss, since PVT is actually equally good to run than zerker.

The reason we get our jimmies rustled every time someone posts another thread about this boss being “too hard” or “broken” and demand Anet to “fix” it, is because it annoys us that people want to dumb this game down even more. You say this boss requires certain tactics to complete, well, sure it does, PUGs just refuse to run the tactics, and in my (not so humble) opinion, if you don’t want to do the effort, you don’t deserve the reward.

The boss doesn’t need fixing but it did change a few patches ago due to a spider spawning bug. That’s why there are so many posts about it now.

Do it right the first time. Which means dps down the boss from the get-go, generally with melee. Doing it after is not impossible, just that spiders don’t despawn.

We had this problem with this boss. The spiders constantly respawn, without anyone in range of the boss (or hitting the boss). We can pull and kill all the spiders back in the tunnel, then the room is full again.

We tried to have someone aggro the spiders and kite / survive, while putting heavy dps on the tree structure. Did not work either, the spiders get the aggro until someone hits the tree, at which point all spiders shoot their poison to the attackers of structure.

We read then here on forums about the do it right from get go. So we gave it a new try after reset. No dice. DPS on tree instagibbed by dozens of spiders spitting venoms despite reflects and what not. We most paths of other dungeons and never had an encounter we couldn’t figure out the mechanics for it to beat it, but this spider tree it simply feels like gimmick / bugged.

Our group composition varies depending on peeps online, but is usually 1 thief, 1 engi, 1 ranger, 1 guardian or warrior, 1 necro or ele (we run whatever peeps enjoy playing).

Yeah man, those 10 min runs are just so terrible…

I think it’s a really fun and easy dungeon (including F/U), tastes differ. I like Arah, CM, TA, AC and CoE a lot. I hate SE, HotW and CoF. I know a lot of people hate AC, CM and TA, but I really don’t understand why, they’re all easy paths (8-12 mins) and rewards aren’t that bad.

The only thing that currently needs fixing is the dungeon rewards, I’ll shamelessly refer to my personal list again. And the health pools in HotW.

They are fundamentally flawed as dungeons. They are all just straight corridors filled with HP sponges with poor rewards. There’s very little in them that demands strategy, and even less in them that involve more than just walking and fighting. Dungeons should be vast labyrinths filled with traps and puzzles. There should be variety in the environment, some platforming, some swimming, some puzzling. And not just long corridors. Level Design wise there’s just very little of substance in any of them.

HotW and AC are two of the few dungeons that stand out due to more height differences, and the underwater sections in HotW. But both are plagued by enemies that are not that fun to fight (and take too long to die), and both are linear as hell.

I’d take any quest from Dungeons and Dragons online any day, over one of GW2’s dungeons. That game (even though it has its own flaws) shows what other MMO’s could be doing with their dungeon content.

Meh. I think the spiders should just reset after a wipe, I don’t think that’s too much to ask for. Doesn’t really affect the difficulty of the boss, because it’s always the same as if you had done it the first attempt.

The whole idea is to be able to do each dungeon path with various group compositions. The moment you need to have 2 reflects and 1200 ranged dps to kill one boss, that’s very bad design decision (even if is working as intended and not bugged).

My thief doesn’t have 1200 range on anything, so that means she can’t do this path? I don’t have a problem switching specs / gear / weapon sets to adjust to different encounters, but what if an encounter wasn’t designed to be done with my class?

This is not even close to old CoF p1 farm runs, were you had certain setups best fit for fastest times, you could still do p1 in reasonable time with any sort of party comp.

Dunno if you played GW1, but maybe UW and FoW would be more like your dungeons? They’re sandbox-y in the sense that you can go anywhere in the dungeon you want (sort of), but linear in the sense that you had to perform the same 10/11 quests in order to complete it.

DoA was semi-linear in the sense that you had one task to perform in each of the 4 areas, but for example Stygian Veil and Ravenheart Gloom were more open to tactics etc. That’s what made UW, FoW and DoA so great, it gave you opportunities to find optimal tactics. Splits, quest orders, etc were very important in those speedclears. Dungeon speedclears in GW2 are based on how fast you can kill stuff.

Dunno why I like those dungeons so much, I just do. I hate HotW with a passion though.

You can do it with any group composition. You don’t even need reflects if your group DPS is sufficient (Nikaido made a video of an LOD group that killed the boss without reflects). You can even dodge the spiders so none spawn. You could technically solo this boss if you wanted to.

I can agree with Cookie though that the spiders need to reset on a wipe (something I’ve said before already). But the boss itself is just fine. People need to learn that they have to adapt to boss encounters, and if they don’t want to adapt, they’ll either have a really bad time killing the boss, or they’ll just plain fail. Don’t want to adapt? Too bad, no reward for you.

Pretty much. And even Anet has almost admitted this. Arah is a rare exception, but that’s mostly due to a few interesting bosses. And AC has gotten some what better now that some of the bosses have been changed. Still buggy, but not as boring as the others.

Of course. But none of them offer the kind of dungeon crawling experience that I would like to see in the game. Anet was able to deliver this in GW1, but with GW2 they messed up. They were in a hurry to get the game out, and didn’t polish the dungeons.

Dunno if you played GW1, but maybe UW and FoW would be more like your dungeons?

I have played GW1 since release up to the day GW2 was released.

And yes UW and FoW would be more of a step in the right direction. Although both clearly had their flaws with their trial and error quests, and sometimes completely random wipes. And FoW badly needed a final boss (like Menzies, but at least UW eventually got Dhuum). UW and FOW are what GW2 needs right now. Those kinds of vast explorable open dungeons.

I really loved the fact that you could explore them, and could do the quests in any order. Of course for GW2 I would also like to see puzzles, traps and platforming. And of course more height differences.

Yeah, I was less of a fan of DOA, because it seemed to push players too much into one strategy. At least as far as Foundry was concerned. And it lacked interesting quest content. But I totally see what you mean, and I think that would be a great improvement to GW2’s dungeons.

I can understand that perfectly. HotW has everything to be a great dungeon, yet the sluggish rate at which you have to grind through the enemies with massive health pools, just drags the whole thing down. It has a decent lay out and plenty of height differences, mixed even with swimming, yet fails to be fun.
