The Cantha Thread [Merged]
Since the Aetherblade Retreat is located directly under the Dominion of Winds, does this mean that we’ve found an underground pass into the Tengu city?

Yeah, I’ve wondered if there will be any mention of the Tengu now. I mean, don’t you think they’d notice this was going on? Was this deliberate, or an oversight?
I am just reading the novel Sea of Sorrows in which the ship the protagonist hired on set sails to Kaineng! It seems Cantha is closer than ever! Also look at the artwork for the next patch on the releases page. Disclaimer: I have not yet read the whole book.

I’m guessing he’s not going to make it there. But at least they are acknowledging Cantha’s existence. We can only hope they can take further steps and eventually introduce a Cantha expansion.
I enjoyed Cantha and Elona and hope to see a wonderful come back in GW2

He does. In fact the book offhandedly mentions that they go back and forth between Kryta and Kaingeng a few times. I think in terms of the timeline it’s set not long after the end of Guild Wars Beyond, so it isn’t a big deal in the novel, it’s just trade as usual
When they first announced GW2 the first thing I thought about was how cool it would be to play as a tengu. Here’s hoping that someday we can!
I really hope that eventually they will expand towards the way that cantha is then eventually to cantha.

This is another reason I hope out hope. Speak to the tengu in Lions arch is it becomes VERY clear that they will be joining the game in a major way at some point.
1 year anniversary. Surprise us Anet. go for the pro troll.

I would love to see the Jade sea in the new engine. I can just imagine how long i would stand and stare at it. I said it before and I’ll say it again, Please bring Cantha back, if nothing else at least recreate the Canthan district in DR. It would undoubtedly mean a lot to the community.

Firstly: The Jade Sea has begun to melt, of course it’s possible that it hasn’t fully melted yet, but I would expect large areas of it to be water again.
Also we get an idea of how gorgeous a Gw2 Jade Sea would be from the Jade Sea Fractal, which is gorgeous.
Someone said this but I will say it again
Think of the kaineng city encompassing multiple zones with an inner city which would have no combat and the outer city which would have combat.. And you could roam through the buildings..probably very graphically intensive but sooooooo worth it
+1 for Cantha
i have been discussing this with several of my guildmembers and we all came to the conclusion that it would just be wrong to not include cantha, lorewise we would logically have to witness what happened to cantha 250 years after the events of gw1.
Omitting cantha and Elona would be a huge mistake! as it would be throwing out a part of history that made up gw1. I’m sure most of us want gw2 to be a continuation of gw1 as much as possible in terms of lore and story.
So please reconsider putting back in Cantha.
I for one would like to know what happened to Shingjea island ^^
Well I hope everyone here enjoyed their Cantha fix over at Shing Jea Monastery in GW1 this weekend for the original Dragon Festival. Did you notice the new NPC who announces the weekly bonuses, “Foreman the Crier”? I wonder who that could be named after, hmm… And he stood in the monastery all weekend shouting, “Long live Cantha!”
Ffw to GW2, so who is now proudly sporting a jade weapon from Dragon Bash as an advertisement for future Cantha content? I hope you’ve all been lucky to get a ticket or three!
And if the jade weapon skins haven’t given us enough Cantha, check out the concept art for the new Bazaar of the Four Winds. Is it just me, or does that make you think, “Floating Kaineng”??
After disappointments over sky pirates who were not Canthan, I’m not assuming anything…the Bazaar may not have anything to do with Cantha. But I couldn’t help noticing some definite influence of the Factions visual style. Maybe we will see the scrapped Canthan elements built into the game more and more, the way we see designs from the cancelled Utopia campaign in Eye of the North and GW2.
Very nice, but I’m still eagerly waiting for the day when Anet stops teasing us and gives us something more than these tide-overs!
Show your support for Cantha’s return in GW2! Please join us in the Cantha Thread.
Many thanks to Wooden Potatoes for his outstanding lore video, a real tribute to Cantha.
I hope ANet would rethink this again or the whole NCSoft team, Cantha is by far one of the best installment in GW1 and has one of the best stories. I mean the amount of work they put into that, the skills, the environment. I would be really disappointed if they didn’t have Cantha in GW2. I know there are other races out there but this region is part of Tyria that should be explore. Likewise on Elona.
I agree wholeheartedly that Cantha and Elona NEED to be added to Guild Wars 2 at some point or another. I don’t know when might be the best time, but it seems an extreme disservice to the fans, the real-world cultures they represent, and the lore of the game itself not to include those continents.
However, I do admit that finding people to do group events where there isn’t any new content is often extremely difficult. Just as Dynamic Events scale up to include more players, group events should scale down to be able to accommodate fewer players. Like the Temple of Lyssa group event couldn’t be done with two dozen people.
I thought we were staying away from the Asian theme? The lanterns?

Dragonband
Quick! Sue Arena Net for offensive use of Asian elements!

No no, Apple will sue them because those lanterns resemble apples by their circular shape, only without bites in them :P

I had to check him out.
Well this topic sure got more interesting after reading the “latest” news about their idea of expansions.
I find it more fun that arena net is still ignoring a thread with more than 1000 posts.

Except they aren’t.
Josh Foreman replied stating he himself wants it too and that it may be possible “if we ask hard enough”.

because they are focusing on developing content that is interesting and worth playing, such as living story
I would like to see all the continents for Guild Wars 2.
There seems to be a lot more Asian themed art and NPCs coming out recently. That could be a good sign that NCSoft might let Anet release a proper Cantha expansion.
Factions was – to me – light years ahead of all other GW1 campaigns.
I started in Prophecies, but nothing really made me enjoy GW1 as much as Factions.
I remember deleting all characters from Prophecies and starting 1 character of each profession in Factions.
Assassin was a luft of fresh air.
Ritualist was awesome too.
Nightfall brought me my beloved Dervishes, Hero system and a change of scenery.
But nothing like Factions in terms of world and lore.
If not mentioned before, there is a nice article that points to this thread.
Hope restored?

I was just headed here to post about this, hope is somewhat restored! People need to keep asking, though

Possible Cantha. Possible new character class. Possible new maps.
My eyes just got a bit teary. Excuse me while I squeal quietly at work.
they could charge $500 for the Cantha expansion and id kittening buy it.

Factions was the reason I fell in love with GW1.
I understand Anet have put lot of work into the living story but as many posts have said before… it’s just a bit underwhelming.
I would gladly not have any living story for 6-12 months if it meant that time was put toward a full expansion. The story is there and there are new playable race options crying out to be used (Tengu & Kodan).
I played and loved GW1 for 5 years, but I don’t see GW2 lasting that long without a proper new continent/expansion added.
Please Anet! Cantha next!
…change the Canthan District to The Great Collapse? was there more to it than just “angry Koreans and Chinese people”?
Because, the district looked beautiful, I a kittening love Cantha and would’ve loved to just have a taste of it again.
There was a person working at NCsoft who was Korean I believe, and he didn’t like that ArenaNet mixed cultures. That pretty much means that Cantha, and such, is a mix between Asian cultures, both Japan, China, Korean, etc.
TDLR; Cantha is a mix between different cultures and someone who, at that time, worked for NCsoft didn’t like that so they scrapped the idea for Cantha at that moment.
My story is not 100% correct, but it was something in those lines, about mixing cultures.
Cantha also had a heck of a lot of Medieval gothic, Germanic, Indonesian and Greek influences, it wasn’t all the Far East.
I think it was more than 1 person, it was a company wide decision. They’re trying tk market to those countries and japan, china, korea takes their different heritages very seriously. As american, I am melting pot, so I don’t mind mixing culture it’s what we do. But it could hurt sales for them if patrons from japan/korea are offended. Does that make sense? I also hope they bring it back in some form, indeed, it was beautiful.
I imagine that China doesn’t really like China quarters portrayed. Though I’m still pretty sure that we will get Cantha as a continent.
So political correctness gone mad then?
I bet 99.99% of those Asian cultures would not have been bothered at all…
Just like 99.99% of us in western countries don’t care about mixed cultures…

Imagine showing a movie in the US where the Russians wins a war against the US.
Yeah, it wouldn’t get such a good review ;P
we european don’t get angry because of cultural mixes between our countless cultures…
sometimes i think people just need something to be mad at all the time!

It’s yes and no about the mixing of cultures, and less so about political correctness than just perception.
Essentially Cantha represented a generalized, abstraction of the ‘East’. It’s the ‘East’ because it has all of those iconographic ideas that make us think of the Orient (Dragons, Ninjas, and Samurai OH MY!), but isn’t actually anything like the Orient. It’s kind of like going to Vegas and then thinking ‘oh, so this is what Paris and Venice must be like’.
Essentially it’s like when people boil down the States as nothing but a bunch of gun totting, red necks who scream " ‘MURRICA! FOOTBALL!" and assume that’s just how every American must logically be because that’s the stereotypical American. Just being Canadian, I met Europeans and Australians who’s only idea of what Canadians were like were from the McKenzie Brothers and Epic Meal Time. It’s neither flattering nor accurate nor appreciated (though sometimes humorous).
So yeah, people have the right to care about how their culture is interpreted, assuming that that was the case anyways. I don’t think any confirmation was given to the theory.

Pretty much this. However the 2nd statement is incorrect. They couldn’t sell in China with an Asian quarter in place. Chine is sort of sensitive. Japan wouldn’t have cared though.
I’m American so I can’t explain it any better than I did, guys, sorry. I wish someone knowledgable about culture would post, but I’ve heard it described as “imagine making a digital representation of New York City where the Canadian flag is flown and The Sears Tower is on the cityscape.” I wouldn’t say it’s being politically correct…it’s a little deeper than that. And when you’re talking millions of dollars, you better make sure you’re not offending your potential customers. I hope that helps.
I images its going to be an story to let gw2 players rediscover that part of the world.
You guys are super negative when it comes to things not being there i must say do you think it rains because some one dose not like you?
Guild : OBEY (The Legacy) I call it Obay , TLC (WvW) , UNIV (other)

Honestly there’s been so much misinformation and conflicting reports on the situation so I prefer a “wait and see” approach in this case.

Actually, the older generations of some of the Asian countries still harbor a lot of……negative opinions for each other. Of course to a degree this bleeds into the younger generation as a result.
That being said, Cantha was not the most positive of representations from what I remember……so I can’t exactly blame them.

It’s a good thing cats cannot talk or purchase video games. They might be outraged at the fictional portrayal of cat-like people living in harmony with their own city!
Or, for a more realistic comparison, look at how significantly large portions of Europe and North America are totally not upset about any of the design behind the humans and cities in-game that obviously draw from their different cultures! Because it’s a fictional, fantasy game.
Ugh that’s so frustrating that, from the information we have, it’s basically true that Cantha is being blocked by a bunch of weirdos who think it’s, like, a critique on their lives or some nonsense.
