In all the threads expressing ire about the pricing shown in the Gem Store for HoT preorders, I frequently see statements such as:
“Instead of looking at it as you’re being shafted, maybe look at it as being easier to get new people into the game. New blood is good, yes?”
Think about this for a moment. The HoT preorder options are only available in the gem store at this minute. And there was a little popup flag in-game that redirected me to the Gem Store page for HoT. There is no way that this is for new players. It’s for players who already have the game, and are playing it right now.
I can’t possibly be the only one who understands this.
I feel you, this is stupid. Especially, when a lot of their current players have sunk money into the GemStore. Then they pull this, not cool. The hype for HoT died today, let’s see what AreaNet does.
ANet chooses the things it limits in the base game very carefully so as to make gems a very attractive thing. Not enough bank space? Buy a bank upgrade! Not enough materials storage space? Buy an upgrade! Only 600-800 gems each. Sick of having to buy new mining implements for the long material grind? Get one of the unlimited use versions!
I feel like such a fool. Of course, to someone like me, fanboys say: “You paid for those things and you received those things. The deal was 100% complete. Your past gem purchases in no way entitle you to a discount on the expansion pack.”

I am fine with $50 price that includes the core game buy without the additional character slot? Hell no. Please reconsider this Anet. It’s a request to include an additional character slot to the $50 edition.

I am willing to pay $19.99 for an account upgrade that has the HoT content and includes a character slot. I am not interested in your products if you’re trying to scam me.
My thoughts exactly. Not buying at that pricepoint especially kitten off no character slot. LOL!
How is it a scam? Have you ever bought an expansion for an MMO before? News flash, they’re all $50+.
Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward is $40. Shut up.
Guild Wars: Factions, $50, Guild Wars: Nightfall, $50. No. Look at EVERY expansion for World of Warcraft then come back.
Factions and Nightfall weren’t expansions. They were separate games that could be linked to each other and Prophesies.
Still expansions regardless. Do you need me to point out WoW again? Eye of the North was an expansion, $40 and came with no character slots.
Factions and Nightfall weren’t expansions.
And you keep repeating that ignoring the other examples.
I don’t care about the cherry picked examples. You’ve already demonstrated that you don’t want an honest discussion.
You don’t care about examples period it appears.

Factions and Nightfall are not cherry picked. They are the most relevant examples possible because they are ANet games. That’s the kind of value ANet used to represent.
I don’t follow your conclusion based on what I said.

And once again new players are senselessly rewarded while dedicated players who are sustaining the company and keeping the game alive are left feeling neglected and cheated. It’s become almost an art form at this point.
I’ll get it if they drop the price by $20 for those of us who already own the game, otherwise they can forget about it. I don’t enjoy being insulted like this.

I’ve never taken to the forums before to voice my concern, but this feels like i should.
I get that they’re targeting new players with the verbage “includes base game”. The expansion was likely targeted to be $50 anyway…
As a veteran player since original beta, $50 feels too high for an expansion. However, $50 would feel right if it were a stand-alone package like GW: Factions or GW: Nightfall.
Maybe if we knew more about what we’d be getting for our $$. How many zones? what size are they? How many missions/hours is the single-player story expected to take? (not including grind for masteries)

its like a conundrum..Buy the expansion..get a free code to give to someone. I’m guessing they’ll have to repeat the process for other people too?
if you use the code to upgrade an existing account, you don’t get a gw2 base account as well. either you upgrade the new account, or you only get the upgrade.

You justify $50.00 just because you’re throwing in the base game that everyone has. REALLY? You people are a complete JOKE! I will never give you $50.00 for this tiny expansion. EVER.

Because GW2 HoT is better? Duh.

… It’s not that their money is worth more. It’s to lower their barrier to entry, rather than having a 100% off sale on the core game forever to go along with the expansion.

You guys realize that $20 is roughly the cost of any living story. IE one or partial sections of one kittenty map and maybe 3 missions right?
All of you people expecting this for $20 are just not thinking, at all. It’s pretty funny.
I agree the standard should have a character slot. I also expected it to cost $50 and you should have expected it too.
Given that Anet has sold GW for what, $5? in the past, I seriously hope that they drop the price to $44.99 and let the people cry about it.
The Living Story stuff is pretty low value so that doesn’t justify it.
You know what was good value? The base game. 50 bucks for a full game. That’s a reasonable level of value.
Given that they’ve put a lot of effort into maintaining the game all this time, I think most of us are willing to pay a bit more than the value of the expansion but there are limits and I think Anet has exceeded them massively, especially considering that the base game requires some gemstore upgrades to really shine.
I completely agree that the base game was a great value for $50. I paid much more and I’m still happy and enjoying it. That was my choice.
I know the LS was free if you were here, but if you wanted it and you weren’t the total price is in the area of $20, that’s their pricing and it seems logical that the expansion would be where it is now.
I totally agree there should have been a character slot in this. That was Anets only mistake here – IMO.
Also the Gemstore does not have anything that the base game really needs to shine, it’s all prestige. We buy that kitten because it’s pretty and we like shinies.
I was refering to the very restrictive amount of character slots, inventory size, and bank size that the game starts out with. The game is a lot better once you upgrade those.

Honestly if they had just added a character slot to the standard edition I would have gotten it right away, or if they had made any of the more expensive editions items appealing I might have gotten those, but they didn’t so, I’ll be waiting a bit until this all plays out.

HoT: Expansion, adds one profession, multiple skills and armor sets. As far as we know, the only areas added in PVE will be just to the west of Silverwastes and south into Magus Falls. I won’t be super pessimistic and say “lol only three maps!”, but such a small area doesn’t seem worth standard expansion price to me. Perhaps if they also added the Maguuma Wastes all the way up to the coast of Janthir Bay and east into the Woodland Cascades, the current price would be more palatable.

The core game is included to get new people in. It’s not a kick in the face if you already have the core game. It’s a BONUS to friends, family, acquaintances you want to bring into the game.
There’s no sub, 50$ is fair for a AAA expansion with as much as HoT is giving us. If you want a better deal, buy the Ultimate edition for 50$ more that comes with some free stuff, a character slot, and… 50$ worth of gems.

Well, it will be 50$ at retail as well when it actually comes out, so it is not like you are saving money by waiting it out either.
Regina’s answer basically confirms this… the MSRP for the expansion is what is listed on buy.guildwars2.com for your region right now. (and likely also that there will be two retail versions the base one and “deluxe” one).

Hey, John Smith, bought the $99.99 version. The value isn’t what I’d call “ideal,” but I am one of the players that was looking to buy a physical collector’s edition ($150-200.) Overall, disappointed with the versions offered, but I was going to buy gems tonight anyway – ended up working out I guess. Also, HOW DARE YOU EXPECT PEOPLE TO PAY FOR YOUR EXPANSION.
Sorry your official forums are full of vitriol instead of more constructive feedback.
Im sorry, in this situation you are the 1% and every single other person is the 99%. your voice doesnt mean more than every one elses just because you had 100 dollars to blow on gems
1% is having a job and money enough to spend on thing I enjoy? Weird. I am definitely not in the 1%.
You’re taking my comment out of context: I usually spend $10-30 on gems a month. However, with the Deluxe being $75 and my purchase of gems about take place anyway (I wanted the pet rock – it is completely useless and adorable), $100 was the better value for me.
I can’t disagree that they missed the mark, though; they should have stuck with the $39.99 for the expansion and made the base game officially cost $10 to prevent threads like this. The amount of (perceived) slight you people think ArenaNet is engaging in is, honestly, hilarious. Though, I guess then we’d have threads saying it should be free instead.

So what about existing players? I just feel like it’s totally excluding people who already own the game. It means the money we spent to buy Guild Wars 2 in the first place doesn’t mean anything anymore. Most of us don’t want a free second account with the expansion. It’d be nice if existing players got some kind of bonus to the account they already have, or some kind of loyalty discount for HoT.

$50 is totally fair but please reconsider giving an additional character slot to all editions of purchase available. In gw1, when they released expansions with new professions they gave out free char slot, why isn’t the case now?

OK. But a new player is getting 5 characters slots and the expansion at $50 while existing players get the expansion only. In other words, if I and my new player friend buy the game on the same day, he gets more than I do for the same price.
Well, your new player friend would have to level up, and do a bunch of story missions, and gear up, and learn how to play. Where as a Vet you can just port to Maguuma and go to town, learn masteries and such.

But what about US, who cannot choose to not buy another copy? IF, the expansion really costs 50 dollars, then I expect my game content is doubled. I need 8 new dungeons, another main story, and another world map instead of one map. I cannot see this as a breakthrough expansion pack, but more of an update. I can grab the expansion at 50 dollars right now, but frankly the expansion gives me waaaay too little at that price. I was expecting maybe 20 or 35 dollars top, and maybe I’ll buy the second tier that gives me more bonuses. But nope, severely disappointed.
However, I would happily to buy a standard expansion with a character slot for existing accounts (or maybe some gems or toys/minis/skins I don’t know). I can afford a 50$ expansion pack, but man, I believe 50 dollars for expansion and some stuff thrown in FOR the OLD PLAYERS could have been a bit better. This is quite a slap from you guys.

Yes it really does not help to not know how many zones and stuff. The amount of content that will be in the game is so vague that I’m sure a lot of people (including myself) are expecting maybe 3-5 areas, a very short story arc, and nothing else.
If it was going to be a new region like Cantha I’d slap down 50 bucks immediately. But if you’re just like “new areas and story content!” then I’m not very excited to drop that kinda money.

Or, it could be that the expansion itself is $50, but in an attempt to attract new players the core game comes ‘free’ to them if they bought the expansion at the same price as the rest of us.
It’s a common marketing and economic tactic that works wonders, not a single quality MMO hasn’t done something like this before.
Do you believe the expansion is worth $50 though? Not to dismiss the work ANet put into it, but from everything we’ve seen it’s a mini expansion, it doesn’t offer nearly as much that every other quality MMO’s expansion does at this price point. The only thing that could justify this price is if the core game was bundled in with it at a 50%~75% discount or if ANet has been really coy and is actually including an entire continent in HoT to surprise us with.
I hope it’s the latter, because if it’s the former I have to really wonder if we’re going to be saddled with an extra account every time an expansion comes out.
We don’t know what the long term plans are for the Heart of Thorns- will there be content added after the initial release (the way its been added to the base game)? I mean, even if it is a “mini” expansion, there’s still been a lot of new stuff created for the game (a new pvp map, new wvw maps, guild halls, a new 3-in-1 zone, new mode of travel, a new class, a new trait system, and new specializations for all existing classes). It might not be the same size as another MMO expansion pack, but Anet has also expected us to pay a lot less for the amount of content they’ve give us, and plan to keep giving us. If this was SWTOR, I would never pay $50 for an EP because I’ve already thrown hundreds of dollars at them in subscriptions (never mind the base game cost). With GW2 it’s different, simply because the return of my initial investment has been so high that I don’t think that them asking $50 for a substantial amount of new content (that might beget more “free” content) is that out of line.
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: steve.2945
it just hit me, wouldn’t HOT technically be higher level content, so to speak? why are they catering to the new players, when they can’t access the content fully? I’m all kinds of confused on how developers want their veterans to buy their content if it goes to dropping us, for the newer people.

It’s the $50 for absolutely nothing besides access to the expanded content. Previous GW expansions at the very least included an expansion slot for new character classes at the base purchace price. With this, we’re being told just access is $50, another character slot will take an additional $25 to get (with fluff).
One could cynically assume that they are banking on people being cranky about that, and buying gems to get a character slot, instead.
Expansions have NOT had extra slots. EOTN did not have have an extra slot. If you are thinking of Factions or Nightfall, they are not expansions

Well, I expressed severe dissatisfaction with GW2 when it came out, disappointment with the direction I saw the game heading. I was attacked by all brands of defensive fanboy-ism (humorously, mostly from people whose GW introduction was GW2. Myself, I’ve been around since the first few days of GW1).
Seeing all the various disrespect the company seems to have for its fanbase, the cashing in…nickle and dime-ing (and quartering and dollaring), etc etc.
Well, sucks to see an IP I loved go down the tubes as a mediocre, microtransaction piggy bank for the company.
I feel vindicated at least.
(….guild halls finally. Hmm, wonder how many hundreds of gems they will cost.)

To clarify: $50 is the price of the expansion. We included the core game as a free bonus to make it easier for new players to get into it.
LOL Ok have fun selling that

…can’t people wait at least a day or to for the E3 hype to settle, so that additional details about the expansion only bundle come out?
It’s not like they’re going to make older players miss beta events by only giving out preorder bundles that have core+HoT. That would take at the very least a week, and next patch might highly likely not have a beta event within that time frame.
I would agree with you, if they had given any indication whatsoever that such a bundle was coming. The fact that you can buy the $50 version in-game seems to indicate it’s not.
And if you look at the other scope, it’s just one day after E3. Not even HOURS approaching to HALF OF A DAY after the E3 presentation. Have faith and WAIT for any expansion offer changes, instead of RUSHING TO BUYBUYBUY.
Even the in-game option can change with a patch or two. So if I were you, I’d WAIT, since you can give ANet three weeks time to change, revise, or add on their stance with respect to expansion offers.
Nope. Gaile just posted on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/3a46s4/preorders_for_heart_of_thorns_are_now_live/cs966l5
“Hey all. We’re super happy to be launching pre-purchase of Heart of Thorns! We just want to let you know that $50 is the price of the expansion. We included the core game as a free bonus to make it easier for new players to get into it. There won’t be any other HoT editions, fyi.”
