I have had random lag spikes and terrible rubber banding issues for the past 2-3 days, both in PvP and PvE, and I can’t seem to solve the issue regardless of what I do.

Dear ArenaNet,

In the absence of the odd undersea cable issues, connection with the game has always been relatively stable and fast. However only very recently (less than 48 hours), the game has been unplayable for me even in pve. Before suggesting that it is due to ISP issues, please look at the attached screenshot. Unlike many others, the lag / latency I can live with since I don’t do much pvp at all. However, the main problem I am having is the packet loss. Please look into this matter. Any advice in the interim on how to play over the weekend while this is being investigated into is very much appreciated.

This lag issue is getting worse and worse every day. Last night, I literally had like a three minute freeze of the game. After that, the events flushed though and I got to watch myself down, rally a bunch of times, eventually get defeated and revived, all within a few seconds. About half a minute after, it froze again. I think it should be obvious that this qualifies as “unplayable”.

Now, there have been lots of people throwing around their opinions as to who is at fault here, but (merely skimming this thead due to the huge number of posts) I get the impression that logic is rarely involved. So let’s look at this scientifically: Correct me if I’m wrong, but the connection goes somewhat like this:

me >> my ISP >> backbone types nodes >> NCSoft’s ISP >> NCSoft

If the issue were with…
- …me, this thread would not exist, as I would be (almost) the only one having this problem.
- …my ISP, at the very most, only Germans would have this problem, but it seems to concern all of Europe.
- …the internet backbones, we could tell by the all around pillaging and plundering, since the internet breaking down is tantamount to the apocalypse in this day and age.
- …NCSoft, everyone would have this problem, but only EU seems to have it with NA working fine.

This leaves only one: The networks on NCSoft’s “end” seem to have issues. Now, many of the traces have ostensibly confirmed that this is the case. With the number of pathping logs posted here and Haruhi knows how many emails with such logs sent to the support, I would think there should be enough data to root out the network(s) causing problems. That said — how to put this delicately? Get a proper ISP, NCSoft! And, with that down, drop the one/s that is/are garbage. Clearly, some of the networks (through which EU traffic seems to be routed, but not NA traffic) are about as good at providing connectivity as a blind carrier pidgeon.

UncleSniper… If you care to look at the the screenshot I took of the pingplotter which I have attached in the post above yours, it is proof that the problem isn’t with the local servers. And while it is true, there is lag in the backbone nodes, it is the only at the NCSoft IPs where there are packet loss of up to 28% (10% first time round and then 20% next time). While I am no IT expert, I believe that packet loss only occurs in 2 settings -

1. Corrupt data
2. Congested network (more common).

Looking at the picture and performing whois on the nodes there, I get:

192.168.0.1 = IANA private, obviously = “me” in my above scenario
115.132.109.* = TELEKOM MALAYSIA BERHAD [MY] = “my ISP”
10.55.32.148 = IANA private (WTF is that doing in there, anyway?)
all the .telia.net nodes = TeliaSonera AB [EU] (duh)
all the .ncsoft.com nodes = NC INTERACTIVE, INC. [US -> TX] = “NCSoft”

Since there are no nodes between the .telia.net and .ncsoft.com blocks, I must assume that NCSoft is directly on Telia, so those nodes equate both the “backbones” and the “NCSoft’s ISP” parts in my scenario. Now looking at where the latency spikes are introduced on your graph, that’s pretty much exactly in the Telia nodes — therefore, my theory of “NCSoft’s ISP is borked” is actually supported by your log.

As for the packet loss, the ping packets are very likely routed exactly as the trace indicates. That means, in theory, any node “further up” could be dropping them, such that they don’t arrive at (or return from) the node in question. In other words, it’s quite concievable that Telia is the one losing the packets. If it were NCSoft’s servers, that would mean the EU servers are dropping lots of packets, but the NA server are not — and yet, both seem to be in the same datacenter, making this interpretation extremely unlikely.

Edit: To be fair, the point where the latency spikes is essentially the point where the transatlantic lines sit, so delay in principle is almost inevitable at that point. However, since no bigger spikes are further down the pipeline, we must assume that the spike that is there is actually the issue. As such, my theory still holds; consequently, NCSoft needs to step into Telia’s toes.

Edit 2: On second thought, the change in continent would be further into the block, whereas the increase in latency is not. Perhaps disregard edit 1. :P Trying tunneling via USA for tonights raid — we’ll see whether this solves things. Either way, I got the pathping thingy all primed and ready in a batch script, so if massive lag strikes again, I’ll at least have my own trace to fall back on.

“Und täglich grüßt das Murmeltier!”

It was fine for 1 or 2 weeks, but then we are bag to the lags. Can it really be that hard to fix this? I never had any lag issues like that in another game, it’s only GW2, so what the hell are you doing wrong or different?!

And so you get your infos you’d like to have but dont know cause you already know it.

OK, with tonight’s findings, and observing the flow with all this in mind, I’m more and more getting the feeling we might have gone about this all wrong.

- The VPN tunnel to the US didn’t resolve the issue, despite altering the route to a different T1 as intended.
- There were times when I could play fairly decently with the tunnel, despite having 70% (!) packet loss the entire time.
- If somebody could name a server in Texas to which I could maintain a TCP connection for an extended period of time, I would do so and check whether I get disconnected from it when I get disconnected from GW2. I do get the feeling I would not.
- The lag issues ramp up in the evenings, when most people play GW2. Someone mentioned that WildStar (also by NCSoft, no?) apparently has the same issue — probably also played in the evening, when people come home from their jobs…
- It used to work flawlessly, but has been slowly getting worse and worse. Now consider that different ISPs, including different T1s, are in use and are all experiencing this issue. I refuse to believe that, starting 4 months ago, the backbone networks have started messing up the (entire!) internet and keep making it worse.

As such, I am now convinced that the issue is, in fact, server lag rather than network lag; this would, IMHO, explain all of the above. ArenaNet/NCSoft have been selling more and more copies of the game and the lag has been getting worse and worse. Just recently, the whole “75% off GW2” thing happened and, sure enough (for me, anyway), the lag had a quantum leap. Did you, by any chance, forget to buy new servers to accomodate the ever-increasing player base? Did you perhaps increase the population limit of the existing servers to offset it? Some of our guild literally “passed on” their lag to other players tonight… I smell insufficient resources on the servers.

I assume you ArenaNet people have tried to reproduce the problem? If it was me, I would now take my laptop right into the datacenter and plug it into the local network there, then “play” on an EU server in the evenings every day for one week. That should quickly determine whether the internet is the issue. If the lag persists despite the “direct connection” (which I’ve come to suspect), you’ll know for sure (and the vast majority of posts in this thread (including my own) as well as the “e-mail the logs” campaign might be rendered moot).

Edit: I realize that my revised theory effectively contradicts my previous one. However, when I said “If the problem were with NCSoft, everyone would have this problem, but only EU seems to have it”, I assumed equal server load between NA and EU. If you drop this overzealous assumption, the NCSoft servers being the problem becomes quite conceivable indeed.

If i type /ip while playing spvp arena and do ‘ping <IP> -t’ for several minutes, it doesn’t show any loss and ping is rather stable (~50 ms). But at the map I have huge lag spikes. And it’s not FPS issue, it’s connection. Sometimes I’m dropped to character select menu with ’can’t connect to login server’ message.

Sorry for huge post, just wanted to show the whole picture.

For at least the last 3 hours today, 1st February 2014, and every now and then for a couple of hours since sometime in December.

Timezone:
CET (GMT+1)

Server:
Far Shiverpeaks

In-game areas where I experienced lag today:
Temple of the Silent Storm, Heart of the Mists and The Silverwastes, but between those I was able to complete two dungeon paths without getting any lag issues and WvW seemed to work fine too.

Description of the lag:

  • Skill lag, the skills are just blinking until I either get disconnected after a couple of minutes or the game client suddenly comes “in sync” with the server(s) again. If I’m not disconnected it might work fine for some minutes before it happens again.
  • While I’m having the skill lag it seems like I’m able to move around and it seems like other players, NPCs and enemies are moving around as usual, but suddenly I might take damage or my game client might realize that I’m not in the same spot as the server says I’m at. Or the server might say I’m under attack a minute before the game client realizes that.
  • The name of a player might not appear as it should when right-clicking on that player to send a whisper, but typing the player’s name and sending the message might cause it to get sent within some minutes if I don’t get disconnected first.
  • Sometimes it seems like an issue with connection to the login servers, which has times several caused an error message about the guild unifying chapters (if I remember it right) and other times with even seeing who is in the guild I’m representing.

Some network test results from running “GW2.exe -diag”:

Got huge lags today evening (after 20:00 GMT +2). I have troubles on every server\map I try to play, pve\wvw\spvp and nothing helps. After 2 hours of trying to fix it I got something. I put google dns(8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) into my router after this it helps on pve\spvp and I can now play those. But WvW it whole another story.

Maybe this story will help somebody else, cheers.

Ive never really had any lag issues with GW2 but the last few days/week its getting ridiculous.
I spend a lot of time in PvP and honestly, the skill lag is unbelievable. It never used to be like this only recently. Its unplayable and think im going to have to stop playing.

I live in England and my ISP is BT.

#Cynz yea the problem is with Telia a swedish Company but they wont do anything about it so NcSoft/Anet have to find a solution elsewhere (they must know it about know) question is will they ? when most if not all there focus lay with the expansion I doubt this is even looked into. They responded sometime back but then dead quiet again and that more then anything is kittening ppl off. Why should we buy an Expansion when we cant even enjoy the game atm ?

And yet another WvW raid foiled by terrible lag and constant disconnects. This is getting ridiculous. 2015-03-02 around 22:00 CEST. You really need to buy more servers. Network congestion does not account for multi-minute freezes, especially when the people have vastly different routes.

I know that license agreement states that you can do whatever you want and we are not allowed to complain, but you’re not helping your image here.

There is hope, if the lag problems are connected to general problems with the Internet infrastructure.

In the media (at least the german media) it is reported that the Deutsche Telekom as the biggest Internet provider in Germany will greatly enhance their peering at DE-CIX in Frankfurt (where the GW2 EU datacenter is located, by the way). Telekom is also a T1 provider and a large amount of EU Internet traffic is routed through them. Telekom is planning to connect to much more providers (also smaller ones) there.

Whatever they are actually doing and which providers they connect in the end, it can only enhance the throughput and latencies of everyone who connect through DE-CIX, which is probably everyone who uses an European Internet site. The future will tell, if GW2 can profit from it as well. I hope it will. Chances are good.

Maybe 1 or 2 matches all the days with amazing lag. Amazing. Have no words to say how horrible this is.

Year 2015, Anet. What a service…

Server: EU Gandara
Country: Russia
Time: 19.00 CET and lasts for 3-4 hours
Description: Skills are stored and executed 10 seconds later, after a while: disconnect. It is worst in wvw but also bad in open world pve. Other Internet applications run fine , so it seems to be a GW2 problem.

Lags from what feels like 500 to 5000 MS. No packet loss, no enemies warping, just my abilities (and their resulting combat numbers) not going off when they should.
Happening every night since Monday so far

I recently came back (>1 year absence) to gw2 after gifting my brother gw2 during the sale. A purchase I’m starting to regret since I can not enjoy the game at all due to this issue. Seeing that it exists since 4 months let’s me doubt that it ever will get fixed – which makes me sad as I really planned to stay (and spent money) for at least a few months months. Please spent money on whatever is blocking progress in fixing it.

Extreme lags and frequent DCs (about every five minutes). The game is virtually unplayable. Loadings screens after login that can last for minutes (they ususally last less than three seconds). This happens almost every night (started a week ago, was less frequent until then, though noticeable), usually starting around 8-ish and lasting until well after midnight, if it stops at all. It’s less noticeable in the afternoon, usually just a skill not activating or a small jump of the characters on the screen. The change to “unplayable” is always sudden. One minute, it works fine, then nothing works at all.

PSA: The amount of small felines serves as an indicator for just how angry I am at something.

3 months of several lags and DCing ONLY on Guild Wars 2 (I play on many online games where i have about 25-30ms pings). I’ll give you my information, but as far as you’ve seen, the problem is global, so you’ll need to fix it as soon as possibile.

Location: Italy
Time and Date: almost 3 months EVERY SINGLE DAY from 18/19 CET to 23/00 CET
Game World: Far Shiverpeaks
Description: Massive lag spikes, DCings, skill delays and bla bla bla. Unplayable.
PvP Only: No, lags and DCs everywhere, on every game mod and map.
Duration: Several hours on primetime, not a single moment of breaking.
Last 5 GW2 sessions: All with lags and DCs during primetime.
Not lagging times of the day: Before 18 CET and after midnight, rest of the time unplayable.
First Lags: Not sure, around September/October 2014? Maybe before the feature patch.
Problems on other NCSoft games: I don’t play any of them but Guild Wars 2, but I play several online games (CS:GO, UT2k4, TF2, DayZ and so on) and I don’t have a single problem with lag, in fact my pings are always around 25-30ms.

Does your technical team have an ETA on this issue? I have LOTS of people on my guild suffering of it.

Thanks.

Problems are still here.
Today I can’t even log into the game, that keeps telling me about firewall problems, but I’m able to play every other game.

more than 4 full pages of complaints and you guys don’t make any progress at all, I’m seriously getting tired at this lag. sometimes it runs fine and then from one moment to the next I can’t play at all, get horrible delays in EVERYTHING, randomly port around the map, fall or jump up without any connection to the movement I actually try to process.

kitten arenanet, stop focusing on your dumb Heart of Thorns but focus on people quitting your game because they can’t play for kitten because you fail to bring a stable connection to everyone. this is not caused by our network, it’s yours. do something already.
