Place for necro in PVE

Necro is playable in PvE. You can get through all of the dungeons with a necro without a problem. As long as you know how to dodge and how each fight works, there’s no reason why people don’t want to PvE with you. Sure the run might be a bit slower if the others don’t might stack and buff the party, but it’s still doable.

However, my gripe with my necro is that while it’s playable, it’s not enjoyable at all in PvE.

Keep in mind that for, a while there (until November I think), the droprates for fractal skins were accidentally screwed up (for the worse) for fractals 40+. I’m not sure when they first screwed it up, but I didn’t get a single skin for about three months. After the patch notes where they said that they fixed it, I got four more fractal skins I didn’t have before.

I’ve never said it’s an exploit, and many people here don’t consider it as an exploit. But it is almost for sure that it’s unintended (like the examples I listed, they both involve reflecting), and what’s more it takes all the fun out of one of the few fun bosses in the game.

Ugh. Let me paraphrase it then. It was not a bugfix, but just a nerf.

And what’s stopping anet from “nerfing” Lupi?

The reason why people think warriors have good dps is because of warrior’s ability to buff themselves in groups that don’t stack might/fury. I think warrior is still great for carrying an average pug, but their damage hits a plateau if the party has another might stacker like an ele or another warrior. Warriors are also naturally tankier so average pugs don’t die as much on a warrior than say a thief or an ele.

Why is it an exploit when you place a reflect skill at the source of the attack instead of where it’s supposed to hit? What is unintended about reflect damage scaling with enemy power?

You’re not really putting it at the source though, you are putting it at a specific point in the terrain to create a result the developers clearly didn’t intend. For that reason alone its an exploit, just not an official one.

It also isn’t about the damage scaling with his power, its about how this special place allows the damage to bypass his phase mechanics where he should go invulnerable.

What may happen is WoR will get the same treatment as feedback and only reflect X projectiles.

You use terrain to put it at the source because the source is otherwise too high in the air. So what it is unintended? Pushing Lupi to the wall? Dropping reflects on top of the wall? Isn’t everything in bounds of game mechanics and thus intended?

So one shotting the jungle wurm was intended? Also look at Malrona, Lupi might end up getting the same treatment if this gets too out of hand.

Lupi is half of the reason why I even do Arah in the first place and trivializing the fight is boring. Once I refused to do it in a pug and the guardian was moaning about how “lots of people have no idea how guardians work”.

When you’re on the character that’s representing one of the guilds, it will show you as not representing for the other guild, since you can only represent one guild at a time on a character.

Honestly I don’t expect to be telling anyone what to do at lvl 49/50 fractals. When 3/5 of the group died on the bonfire part, I started running around in the campsite lighting the fire, trying to get out of combat. Then someone in the party said “run around and ooc please”, I was laughing a little. Then I realised the mesmer was dpsing the ice crystal thing already…after a while, I gave up telling him to stop attacking and just let him get killed by a structure so the rest of the group can res. XD

I guess there are always pugs like that, but about 90% of the times, the pug groups are very solid at lvl 50. I usually bring my guardian if the party doesn’t have one, but I saw the group had a guardian and a mesmer, so I brought my warrior.

Was a lvl 50 fractal pug today, got snowblind, the group was struggling with the ice elementals, and the guardian in the party was just standing there swinging their hammer 500 units away. When I complained about the group not using any reflects despite having a guard and a mes, the guard says “it’s not in my build.”

This is the second time someone has said this to me. The other time was another guard in a CM pug. It’s a rare occurrence, but when it happens I’m just lost for words at how stupid the idea is.

Everything (aoes, shadows, etc.) in the fight can be blocked, so for your heal I would recommend shelter and take offhand focus instead of shield for the block. Also, in my build I have points in the radiance traitline, and that gives me Justice is Blind where my f1 blinds stuff around me. It’s helpful because you can blind the shadows when they get too close to you. Also have retreat and save yourselves on your bar so you can just run around (near the center so you don’t have to cover a large circumference) to avoid the aoes.

Run 25/30/0/0/15 if you want more initiatives/damage. Run 25/30/0/15/0 if you want more dodges.

I find s/p boring but the truth is it’s still the best for clearing trash mobs en masse. I use d/d for bosses or other single target fights. Hope this helps.

What’s more funny is I got kicked from a fractal 49 once by a guardian wearing full celestial and running 0/0/30/30/10 while I was on my zerk (with a bit of valk) guardian. He called me useless and threw a hissy fit when I responded saying his damage is pitiful. He said he’s contributing way more than me by healing us with his f2 and staff 4. After I got kicked I joined a zerk run and got a fractal skin.

Shin, is it the boss for the first fractal or the final boss of the last (4th) fractal?
But yeah, pugging dungeons/fractals can be a horrible experience at times. I would recommend finding a nice guild that will guide you through the runs until you feel confident about doing them with pugs. Also generally higher level fractal pugs are better, since it takes more understanding and/or skill to get to higher levels. But note the “generally”.
When I’m in pug groups and people say they’re “inexperienced”, I’m always happy to explain fights to them. It’s a lot better than when people who don’t say anything and you find out when they screw things up.

I’m not sure if they touched Lupi at all with this patch, but for some reason I kept going down in phase 2 after the patch. When I melee him, I always dodge out and dodge back in under him for his aoe spam. But for the 2 runs I did after the patch, after I dodge back in under Lupi, 2 or 3 more aoe circles appear under him and I get hit. Before I would get hit once if I’m unlucky, but now it seems like they’re just extra aoe circles. Can anyone else confirm this?

You guys are going off on a tangent. I just used that as an example. I usually bring my mesmer or my guardian when I know reflects will be useful, but I don’t always feel like playing those two classes. I’m just saying that it would be nice if the less experienced players have a better attitude, then the more experienced players will tend to be more patient and willing to teach. There are two sides to this issue.

I’m fine with inexperienced people in my group for dungeons. I can be very patient, unless I’m having a bad day in real life or whatnot. I’ve even had someone ask me how old I am because I was being patient with the group. However, there are some people that I can’t stand in dungeons.
Once in CM we were dying from all the riflemen and we had a guardian in the party. I asked that pug if he could put on wall of reflection because I happened to be on my necro (I usually go with my mesmer or guardian, but I saw that we had a guardian and I had an itch to play my necro that day). Not only did he not do it, he told me it’s not part of his build as a dps guardian, and he didn’t even bother spending the skillpoints for that skill.
Also, a lot of the times pugs just don’t tell you they’re new to this have no idea what they’re doing, that’s also what annoys me. I like to melee Lupi because I feel it’s safer for me. I’ve had countless pugs just follow me into melee, not knowing anything, and get kicked (by Lupi)/killed by swarms/have grubs spawned on them. Then I have to tell them to reset, and sometimes they don’t do it, and once I had to kill Lupi with 4 stacks and I was the last one standing when he fell.
So, moral of the story is, there are still people who are willing to help. But sometimes I’m really discouraged by people who can’t open their minds just a sliver to other people’s suggestions, and people who don’t tell you that they’re inexperienced and they end up making everything harder than it has to be.

Hey everyone, I’m 99% a PvE player, spend most of my time running dungeons, and I hardly step into WvW because I’m running this game on a laptop. I’m 19 and an university student so I move around a lot and stuff happen to me, but I try to be as active as I can. I consider myself a polite, helpful, and mature person. I’m looking for an active and close-knit group that I can be a part of. The guild is preferably PvE oriented, relaxed, social, and has a 100% repping policy. I am not looking for guilds where you have to have a certain number of level 80’s or X amount of gold in your bank. I am more than willing to transfer servers.

First off, I would suggest a ranged weapon set. Personally I go with short bow because it’s great against a big group of mobs, but you can also try pistol/pistol and see if it suits your taste. In dungeons most of the times it’s hard to melee because of the damage that mobs/bosses can put out so it forces you to kite while ranging them.
As for your traits, I am not sure about “uncatchable” and “hastened replenishment” in your tricks line. Although my traits are completely different, but I won’t really debate against the ones you’ve chosen because it’s a matter of personal preference in gameplay. I’ve tried caltrops on dodge and it felt underwhelming. Maybe you are really good at getting those to hit, but I felt that I could get more out of my trait points elsewhere. Getting 4 initiative on heal just seems flat out underwhelming though. Since your heal has a cooldown of 30s (and you probably won’t just use it for the initiatives), I just think there are better traits out there.

Yes captain obvious. …..when i said CD duration i thought you would understand its different from C.damage % increase. Neither are really necessary. Also note this , firegrab is better done after ring of fire.

I’m not sure if you just want to troll or something, but originally you quoted my comment about condition damage. Also, if you want to get technical condition damage not a % increase, it’s a linear relationship with a different factor for each condition (burning has the highest factor and bleeding the lowest).
Also, it’s not better using fire grab after the ring of fire. If you want burning, drake’s breath is still the most reliable way to get it. Ring of fire does not burn enemies when you cast it, it only burns the enemies that pass through the ring that is made. Also if you want to go into earth attunement for the possible aura and two blast finishers right after, using it after fire grab gives you more time to.

Condition duration is a different stat from condition damage. Simply getting condition duration for that one skill seems like a waste as well. You can take care to use it right after drake’s breath for the bonus.

Yeah, you need to face the structure and can’t move at all for the hits to land. It’s not really an option in situations like AC where there are gravelings after your blood. So I usually go with the bomb kit for the burrows because, ironically, I can kite better with them.

You can also drop earth 2 and switch to water and use 5 on top of it before it detonates and that will give an area heal. With all your water skills it’s very effective to keep up your melee players. But one note though, watch their health bars and don’t waste your skills when they don’t really need that help.

Well, that doesn’t really make sense. You should be a bit more specific, dude. 25% crit chance doesn’t trigger vigor that often, for example. Now and then, but not enough to make it permanent.

Speaking of which. When people say “perma stuff”, I assume they keep it up all the time, neglecting gameplay and strategy. Not necessarily a good thing, unless you are running only with noone to fight.

Ok that’s an oversight on my part. I forgot to look at his gear as and thought of it from my point of view. I have about 25% base crit chance, so with fury up all the time (it is easy if you switch attunements a lot, and that’s definitely the case if you go d/d) then it’s easy to keep up fury 100% of the times when you are in combat with the air trait. And with fury I have 45% crit chance and, at the speed that d/d eles hit stuff, it’s easy to get a lot of vigor from the trait.
However, his gear choice is questionable too. I don’t know too much about s/d eles, but for d/d eles condition damage seems a bit wasted.
Yes, sometimes going out of your way to get those boons up full time isn’t the best idea, but in the case of d/d eles it’s easy.

Good job at offending people. Calling people who put 30 in arcana dumb will really convince people that you are the smartest person in the whole world. Firstly, Evasive Arcana isn’t overrated. You can get a blast finisher while in earth attunement and also an extra bit of healing while in water attunement. Plus the boon duration and lowered attunement cooldowns will help keeping the boons up. Secondly, even then, another trait that you’ve overlooked in Arcana is the vigor on crit trait (renewing stamina). With perma fury will come perma vigor, and that is a big bonus.
Also, stone splinters sound rather weak if it really does what it is described to do. The beauty of the d/d ele is that you can actually stay a little bit out of melee range while you do damage, mitigating some of the damage you would otherwise take. 50 range is tiny (as a reference, most melee weapons have a 130 range) and 5% isn’t that much considering how much you are giving up.
Lastly, not every ele is human.

A lot of CC. Chill also helps because I think it slows down their attunement switching as well as their abilities’ cooldowns. That’s what I have so far, since I’m mostly a PvE player.

Ok, so I bought the unbreakable choir bell yesterday after I found out such an item exists. I was planning on just buying a wholes stack of the choir bells from the TP, but I like permanent stuff. However, after I started playing around with it I felt like I was being cheated out of my gold, because the bell gets unequipped after just one minute and it is annoying to have to constantly go to my inventory to use it again. When I was switching the octaves, I’ve noticed that the timer goes to 14m (but the bell still gets equipped after about a minute), so I think the bell was originally intended to be out for 15 minutes before it gets unequipped.
Also, one additional question: is octave switching supposed to reset the timer?

Oh sorry, let me correct myself. Elixir C doesn’t have a stun break, but it can cure all conditions (including immobilize, cripple, and chill) and gives you random boons.

Yes, you have a lot of options. To list a few that I know of.
- Elixir S gives invulnerability and throw Elixir S can give you stealth (which is great) or stability (not that great, but still helps)
- Supply crate – stun and distraction, since a lot of mobs go for your turrets
- Bring a shield for its block and maybe its push-back
- Equip a toolkit for even more block
More situational:
- Elixir U is ok for its stun break and endurance recovery
- Elixir C for condition removal and also stun break

I am leveling my elementalist right now as well and I’m at 33 or 34. I use predominantly d/d and yeah, attunement switching is very important. I usually run around and initiate with air attunement. Quickly switch to fire and do a bit of burst. Then I switch to earth for the nice knockdown and quick 2. And then I go into water to slow them down and heal myself (while still doing damage) with 2 (and the 5 heal if I need it). And then repeat the cycle. I don’t have any problem with survivability unless I am being heavily CC’d.
EDIT: forgot to mention that I am using the healing signet because at the speed that you use spells you get a lot of heals from it.

You spend the tokens in Fort Marriner in Lion’s Arch. It’s that row of NPCs on the left of the place where you first port in from Heart of the Mists.
No, you don’t /have/ to do story. You only need one person in the group who has done story before to open up the dungeon and everyone else can come in after that. However, the two reasons to get story done are to be able to open the dungeon yourself or to see the story, most of the stories are pretty cool actually. Also note that if you did story on one character, you have to do it on a different character if you want to be able to open the dungeon on the second character. However for the explorer achievements it’s account wide.
With the tokens you are able to get level 80 exotic armor sets and weapons. Sure they offer rare weapon and armor sets but you don’t really need to gear yourself out until level 80. Note that each dungeon has 3 different weapon and armor set with different stats, so you should check out all the stat combinations of each vendor to see what you like the best.

I need someone to confirm this:
I started using the pistol a few days ago and I’ve noticed that the 2 skill (poison dart volley) misses some of its hits quite often even when the target is hardly moving and I am hardly moving. I’m not sure if it’s working as intended but I haven’t seen this on another class before.

The dilemma with the rifle is, unless you are a very skilled player, how to balance firepower and survivability. The rifle isn’t that fun of a weapon if you just rely on 1, 2, and maybe 4, and I don’t think it’s very effective and dishing out damage unless you go all out power. But when you want to do more damage, you have to get in close and personal and it’s often not that painless in dungeons.
I switched to p/s a few days ago and I have to say I like how it feels a lot more. Your auto attack does a bit less damage but it fires more frequently and can sometimes get multiple hits off a single target (even yellow objects). 2 is a pretty nice skill as it has a bit of burst and a poison on the side. (Although I have noticed that it keeps missing one or two attacks though, the bullet just flies off to the side of the target, even when standing still and/or hitting stationery targets. Can anyone else confirm this?) 3 is a very nice skill if you have a group of mobs that it can bounce in, and it’s decent for single target since it offers blind, confusion, and it has a very very short cast time and does a little bit more damage than the auto-attack. The shield skills are something that I’m still getting to get used to and to make the most of in different situations. 4 is a projectile reflect (but you can’t move) and also a blast finisher. 5 is a block and a stun/daze.
