Great work! Link to current build would be appreciated, please.
Makes me want to spend more time working with my mesmer and less face tanking with my warrior. Mesmer, like thief, can be the strongest pvp prof in the game by those willing to study. Thanks for the video. I spent like an hour watching this, pausing and rewinding, re watching, trying to figure out what was going on.
Thanks much for that… 1 quick piece of advice that I wish someone had told me a long time ago is figuring out what skills you can use during other skills. For example, shattering while you block with shield 4…. Or doing a blink or taking a portal during a stomp. The Mesmer class has a number of these nuances that once you get comfortable with will raise your level of play. Another thought is seeing how many skills you can squeeze in before continuum split ends! I’m nearing 2k matches on Mesmer, and still learning new things every once in a while. GL out there
Great stuff JazzMan, thanks for the video! Makes me want to put down the staff and dust off that GS again. Especially liked how you handled those 2 revs in Forest
Yeah, running current meta. Thanks for the comments guys.
Disclaimer: Video was made for fun, to showcase this meta to guildies. I’m no pro, as you’ll see, so take it easy on me. Otherwise, enjoy!
I’m currently in the middle of diamond with 1 week to go.
I don’t get it… I’ve played about 2500 matches, and I feel way more effective on current Mesmer, Ele, and Ranger in the current state of pvp. Perhaps I need more practice on Rev, but I can count at least 3 or 4 other classes that should potentially be nerfed before Rev.
I enjoyed your video Waveguider, and even learned a couple of things. Thanks for posting and keep it up.
Wow great build and video! I just posted a video in this forum and I’m feeling outplayed already lol! Can’t wait to get home and try something similar in pvp.
Hi guys – I’ve been having a great time in pvp lately on this build and just wanted to share some footage with guildmates, thought I’d share here as well.
It’s been some time since I played a Mesmer without PU, and with no stealth options on my bar, but it is survivable if you pick your spots. I do wish Echo of Memory/Deja Vu’s phantasm hit a bit harder, but the skill itself gives some great mitigation, and I love Tides of Time – which when possible I try to leap through with Sword 3 for the chaos armor. I’m also in love with Gravity Well, and using it with Continuum Split can be very powerful!
Anyways, enjoy the video – I usually solo queue, and I’m no pro – so there are gameplay mistakes along the way, but I’d love to hear from some of you who are running similar Chrono’s in PvP and how you are doing. Thanks!
Just sayin’, I did post this thread in June:
I’d like to use it if possible, but since in contains 2 of her songs it may be disqualified, which I understand. So, I may just have to make a new one!!! Great idea for a contest btw!! What a great tune for a Mesmer montage. (If anyone is curious, my wife is a choreographer and brought the song to my attention).

Great Vid man, I really appreciate it and learned a few things. I can’t wait to get on pvp tonight and work on my Ele in pvp!
In his defense, I think the “wp” was a result of what felt like a long fight, there was a lot of back and forth (boring) prior to clip in there. I think he got confident as he did nearly have me at one point… and then he took it on the chin lol.
Thanks Ross B! Indeed I read your vid thread, and I wish I had read that a long time ago, good stuff in there. FWIW in some previous vids I’ve quickly shown the build w/ mouseovers so that I can fast-track to the good stuff. It does seem though when you include a build, you get more hits on YouTube… not that that makes it a better video of course. Yes, this was just to demo blowing people up- usually not MLG calibur players
At least I kept it to under 4 min of gameplay right!?? Anyways, thanks for the watch, and perhaps next vid you will agree to a second (third?) date!
As for the Mesmer class right now… after being out of the meta for some time, it’s good to be back. We are a hated class right now, which of course makes it very fun to play.
Been having a blast in PVP with this build – usually solo queue or with a buddy. Turns out it is nearly identical to the burst-shatter build found on the meta battle website currently. I made a short video for guildies, 90 seconds on the build, and then some clips to demonstrate the burst potential. Thought I’d share here as well, enjoy.
Why do I like PU vs. lock down builds? I admit, it’s a safety net. When you are targeted by 2 enemies, you can only effectively interrupt 1 while the other attacks. The escapability, IMO, is worth it – at least for me. Also, as I’ve gotten a feel for the longer invis times, I’m starting to use them offensively for some quick GS2+mind-wrack sneak attacks. As for Condi based and other builds, I simply prefer these weapons & playstyle (although I did run a condi staff/scepter+torch “blackwater” build for some time).
There is also a scene in the video involving some pre-match nude dancing at mid, which is taken out of context and “just for lulz” – even without the comical comments before and after, I still find it funny, hope it translates here.
I welcome any constructive feedback – both in regards to my mediocre Microsoft Movie Maker editing skills, and of course the build/gameplay itself.
Hey Guys -
I just made this video for guildies, and thought I’d share with the Mesmer community here as well. It’s just my take on the “Traditional Shatter” build, and while I am not a MLG’er by a long shot, it’s helped me become quite effective in solo and team que, and I’m even doing this in some WvW havoc-type groups.
As for the video, I just use NVidia’s Shadowplay to capture retroactively when something cool happens, and MS Movie Maker which is a free download. I really enjoyed the editing process, and am starting to use some pan/zoom and slow-mo features where it felt right.
Enjoy, and constructive criticism always welcome!

PS – Yes I am aware that our builds will all be changing tomorrow – but from what I’m reading it will only make this & similar builds stronger, so I can’t wait to post an update in a few weeks!
Noooo! Let me see if I can remove the music
Dang was so much better with original tracks I had on there.
/Edit – Added a google drive version of the original vid

Just made a new vid to celebrate crafting a new legendary (Incinerator), and thought I’d share. I’ve been using a SotF build lately, which is a variation from my old Trap vids.

Alternatively: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-9GHHu_pNJ7c0p4ZGdlVjZNTUU&authuser=0 (as intended)
Enjoy!
No MLG skills here, but passable solo que play and a couple of 2v1’s I managed to come out on top – video was made mostly for fun and to share with guildies, but constructive criticism always welcome!

It makes us a bit delusional in build testing I think. If you’re on a game forum theorycrafting about minutia of PvP builds, you’re probably interested/obsessed with the game enough to be a better player than the mother of 4 who is fighting you at mid in the 5 minutes of break she got for the day, and got her build off metabattle.com.
You may beat her, but her build is still probably better.
LOL!!
Roger that, thanks guys. Sebrent, there was one error, I do use Nature’s protection over Strength of spirit, sorry for that. I’ll start experimenting with Sigils more tonight!
I spent the better part of my workday yesterday reading this thread and reviewing builds posted here. Firstly, thanks to those of you who are regular contributors. You know you’re stuff, and this more casual pvp’er can tell you guys play at a higher level than I do, so it’s fascinating to read this as you are going through your process.
As for me, I’ve been casually playing a Condi Trapper Ranger in PvP for the last 6 months, I’ve even posted couple of guides/montages on YouTube and in these forums and the builds portion of the gw2 reddit page. One even has a whopping 2000 hits (almost!) on YouTube. None of that matters, I know, and I’m not offended that most/all of you have dismissed traps!! So you got me thinking, which is always a good thing, and I found the original builds posted in this thread very interesting. Furthermore, at Pax East I got to meet R_O_M from EU’s Orange Logo team (who usually plays Warrior but alt’s a Ranger), and his suggestion was that Survival of the Fittest is very strong in the current Meta, and I should try to incorporate that into my Ranger build.
So I ditched the traps! I ditched the Rabid amulet! And I ditched the controversial Empathic Bond (“Em-pathetic” bond according to some lol), and I put my spin on this build. As has been discussed here, Ranger’s can’t have it all – so what this build lacks is high mobility. I think it has relevance everywhere else, and it suited my playstyle.
It immediately felt good – more survivable, versatile DPS, there seemed to be a lot of regen happening, and I didn’t miss my precious traps as much as I thought I would. Admittedly, my trap build feasted on inexperienced or novice players. It was solid in 1v1’s for sure, but kind of a 1 trick pony – if you couldn’t manage my condi-spike you were going down fast. In any event, I can’t wait to spend more time with this build, as the potential ceiling feels much higher especially if I can practice more with it, and I’m already faring better against stronger players – I solo queue alot.
I’d welcome any thoughts/feedback re: ways to improve the build I linked above. Noteworthy changes vs. the original build in this thread include…
-Signet of the Wild- to manage cc and assist in teamfight stomps.
-Wolf & Hyena as pets
-Offhand training and poison master traits
-Sigils – let me know what you think there. Torment basically as a different flavor of condition to hopefully be cleansed before something else; Generosity for some passive condi re-gifting; Hydromancy to help setup Axe 2; and Energy is always good.
Thanks again guys and I look forward to this thread continuing.

Seems like a Gladomer similar build. Although his build is NOT trap based. Still very Condi heavy. He uses Axe/Torch and Sword/Dagger. Here is Gladomers build: http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fNMQRAnY8fjEqUzaLL+rQ1aABhaVA0uGu3Ww9QcDfdFrkC-TRiAABJ8AA6Z/hE1PAwBB4U1f44IAIpSwKOBAip8LAACwMLzysMDO6RP6RP6RbmzcmzcmzsUAwMNC-e
I was looking to do a SB variant. I am not used to jumping in peoples faces as a Ranger. I will modify yours a bit to my liking. Thanks for the cool video man!
You’re welcome, and like you I like the shortbow as well – mostly for the strong autoattack/bleed pressure, and the interrupt. I wouldn’t say I like to fight in close on everybody though- just power rangers. I also like to let thieves come to me, as the traps really hurt them badly. Ideally I like the 500-900 range when possible.
Recently at PAX East I got to speak with R_O_M from the team Orange Logo (EU team that won the big tournament), as he runs Warrior/Ranger. One of the first things he mentioned is how strong Survival of the Fittest is right now, so yes Gladomir’s build sounds quite effective!
I hope you can post back here once you’ve found your perfect build and let us know how your final build turned out!
(edited by Decimus.1829)
Just finished watching your video. I just wanted to say I love you for your choice in music, it was fitting and hilarious.
Thanks and glad to hear of your success! It is a fun build because it is generally unexpected; I have the “Aether” Shortbow, which looks like a longbow, so people generally assume I’m a power ranger. I’m also surprised by how many people attack my pets – I guess once they figure out I’m not a power Ranger, they assume beastmaster…? Either way is fine with me lol – yes I should try the sword/torch combo, and maybe replace the flame trap with a signet.
Thanks for the comment on the music! If you get the chance, check out my other 2 recent Ranger videos on YouTube, you might like them as well. I did go to great lengths in the 2nd song to sync stomps with the music
Hey all – I posted about a month ago with a Shortbow/Axe & Torch pvp build. I’ve changed a few things up and am having good success, just wanted to share the updates and some gameplay…
Condition Trap PVP Ranger Video Update
Changes
*Off hand dagger (instead of Torch)
*Optional: Sword instead of MH Axe – personal preference
*Changed a couple Sigils
*Changed 2nd Pet (Wolf and Alpine Wolf… Wolf is a must, alpine wolf could be jungle spider, drake, etc)
*Optional: 3rd Trap vs. Signet of Renewal (if playing condition-heavy team)
*Optional: Entangle vs. Rampage as One
It’s a pretty strong 1v1 build, and can definitely be tuned to be more offensive or defensive. I deviate toward the offensive, as it suits my playstyle. Great for holding points, especially if you can lay traps ahead of time, likewise if using Treb or Cannon. There is a solid combination of conditions, good toughness, a stun/daze, a fear, at least 2 evades (4 if using sword), good passive condi removal, poor/fair active condi removal from healing spring (if you need more active condi removal, replace Viper’s Nest or Spike Trap for Signet of Renewal), some CC, and decent downed play if you can utilize the wolf F2 to buy yourself a few precious seconds.
Please enjoy the video. I’m no pro player, but I think it’s a solid PvP build. Constructive feedback please, Thanks!
(edited by Decimus.1829)
Just a quick update, now with off-hand dagger for an additional evade; and sometimes replacing spike trap with the condi-removal signet when playing vs. condi-heavy teams.
Enjoy – https://youtu.be/3JjDgMHG6ic
Well tonight I ditched the Torch in favor of a Dagger… with much success! It played well, and the extra evade did in fact come in handy. I admit I got super lucky doing solo queue and went 8-1 on the night! Time to buy a lotto ticket, but the dagger is staying.
… I don’t ever recommend using torch unless you’re not using flame trap, and just throw one or two traps at a time, preferably one, throwing the next when the first one is about halfway through it’s cooldown. Troll Unguent is also a better choice than Healing Spring although I imagine you took that since you’re not using Empathetic Bond.
I’m sorry to be “blah blah do this do that”…
No need to apologize! In fact, thank you for the good feedback! You seem to know the build well. Well, I am using Empathic bond, I just like the Spring b/c it benefits teammates more and helps manage conditions. For what reasons do you prefer Troll Unguent?
As far as torch, I simply figured once they step into the flame trap, why not increase the burning with more burning!? Is it redundant? Torch 5 in particular feels like it’s doing outstanding damage when it lands, and I like to activate it after I see an opponent clear their initial conditions.
Would love to hear your thoughts on these two topics, and improve the overall build.
Yeah Fluffball, you could definitely give that a try. I like your theorycraft there. In fact, I was previously running shortbow with sword/dagger and Celestial amulet – basically using s/d to dodge around and buy time. I never felt like the dagger was doing much for me except for the occasional dodge, but I do think it’s a viable option in this build. I think you could also make a similar argument for sword as well to increase your mobility/evasion.
Hey fellow Rangers-
I’ve been having a great deal of success and fun with this build and thought I’d share via YouTube.
http://youtu.be/f3MJaE0oax0 (gameplay starts at 3:16 if you want to skip to that)
The build is strong in most 1v1 situations, especially if you get to throw your traps down ahead of time. The combination of multiple conditions, cc effects, and some autoattacks applies alot of pressure; honestly I think alot of people panic and condi-cleanse a bit early, allowing me to load them up again. The weakness of this build is vs. long-ranged Rangers who never close, thus never run through any traps, and perhaps a Necro if they can “out condition” me. Of course player skill is usually more important than build.
I must apologize in advance, as during the video I neglected to mention my preferred pets (wolf and jungle spider) and rune (Rune of the Krait).
In a time of longbow/power builds, I’ve enjoyed mixing in this build and catching people off guard with well-placed traps and pressure from multiple angles… hope you guys like the vid.
(edited by Decimus.1829)
Sorry I did not edit the video, you can skip to about the 30 second mark.
Is anyone else seeing this? As I autoattack with the greatsword, the numbers I see on my screen go up and up and up! However, you’ll notice the enemy’s health bar doesn’t go down any faster than the initial (normal) attack, so it appears the numbers are the error here, and the actual damage being done is correct.
Here’s a quick shadowplay to demonstrate…
Wierd. I have to admit, I was excited for a second.
Yeah, rarely necessary. Sometimes it spares you a couple of hits, but just for fun. In solo queue I’ll use it as an escape, but if the fight goes my way I might as well stomp with it.
(edited by Decimus.1829)
Not perfect gameplay, but I had a lot of fun making the video using NV Shadowplay. Just thought I would share. FWIW, I’m not a l337 d00d, I’m just a casual player having some fun.

Decimma (w/Bolt & Anomaly) – Yak’s Bend – OTG
… With the conjoined mesmer spirit I defeated Liadri on my first attempt, and she also prevailed a couple of tries later.
You beat Liadri on 1 attempt!?!? /bow! I have to say I find that hard to believe though!
DONE!! Took me about 130 attempts, I found it very difficult on my Mesmer.
Prof = Mesmer
Build – 20/20/5/25/0
Domination Traits = Crippling Dissipation(V) and Greatsword Training(X)
Dueling Traits = Phantasmal Fury(II) and Deceptive Evasion(X)
Inspiration Traits = Menders Purity(IV) and Temporal Enchanter(IX)
Weapons – Sword/Focus + Greatsword
Food = [Might/Energy Regen] + Superior Sharpening Stone
Heal = Mirror
Utilities = Blink, Mantra of Resolve and Decoy
Elite Skill = Timewarp
I Initially tried Dulfy’s build using sword and Pistol/Focus, and timed out a few times with that, getting her to 15% a couple of times.
I consider myself a moderately hardcore player, and was upset when my friends started completing this challenge but I could not – perhaps it’s because I usually play more defensively/supportive with Staff (?), but I had a helluva time with this fight and I’m super proud I have completed it after about 8-9 hours of “practice”. My gear is 75% berzerker, Hoelbrak runes, with some toughness/vitality mixed in (around 3250 dmg iirc).
To those still working on this, GL! I finished 11 achievements, and I have no intention of trying to get the Light up the Darkness one… y’all can have that
Thank you for posting the opening in N Shiverpeaks last night, I got all of the Bloodstone shards I needed :-)
Hey Guys -
First of all thank you for the great feedback and discussions we’ve had in game and in these forums. Really great stuff, I think we’ve learned alot about this tricky class.
I’ve been analyzing and modifying this build for a few months now, and wanted to let you know where I’m at. I’ve been gradually pushing the envelope in terms of sacrificing some survivability to gain DPS;
Keep in mind the intent of this build is higher level fractals and challenging PVE content, where our motto is you can’t dps when you’re dead. If you’re just running COF, COE, Farming Orr, etc., please just grab your greatsword, sword and (offhand) and run a shatter build or a phantasm build. Luckily, as a Mesmer, I’m finding we can still gear ourselves aggressively and use our traits, skills, and abilities defensively when needed.
Gear:
1. Rampager’s Armor (with a Carrion Helm).
—-Runes of the Mesmer for pwr/prec.
2. Berserker’s Jewelry and Amulet.
—-Rabid Back piece (not ideal but I’ve got 500 globs invested lol).
3. Weapons:
Staff – Rampager’s
Sword – Rampager’s
Focus – Soldier’s
*(Also keep a Pistol for single target boss fights where reflect is not needed and a ranged phantasm is preferred, see below for trait swap when swapping pistol)
Sigils: I’m flexible here, but I like superior sigil of energy, earth, bloodlust, battle, strength, etc., just make sure they don’t share a cooldown or are redundant.
Stats are much more aggressive than in my original post, and phantasms as well as sword attacks hit pretty kitten hard! (edit – pics at end)
Traits:
0 -
20 – II (Phantasmal Fury), IV (Blade Training) *This Master trait should be traded for Duelist Discipline if you go Pistol for a bossfight, as mentioned above. The iduelist will put crazy bleeds on a single target as it crits on most of it’s 8 rapid shots! Also, if you just can’t live without Deceptive Evasion, you could put that here as well to generate clones on dodge. Generally though, I keep Blade training here as Blurred Frenzy is just plain OP
20 – IV (Illusionary Defense), X (Chaotic Dampening)
25 – V (Persisting Images) Alternatively Glamour Mastery here, VIII (Warden’s Feedback) I <3 THE FOCUS! The reflection from focus skills, the temporal curtain utility, and the hard hitting AOE iWarden are just too good to pass up.
5 – Reduced phantasm cooldowns.
Heal, Utilities, Elite Skill
-Ether feast – heals more for every illusion that is up, short cooldown.
-Phantasmal Defender – soaks up HALF the damage for all groupmates within range. OMG.
-Null Field – AOE condition removal, ethereal combo field.
-Blink – The ultimate in mobility.
-Time Warp – Even with the nerf, large AOE quickness ethereal combo field still worth it.
Obviously, you can swap in portal, feedback, and other utilities as needed, but this is my default set.
Gameplay and Summary
Gameplay remains largely the same. Compared to the original Da Vinci build, we’ve sacrificed some condition damage, toughness and vitality in favor of more aggressive gear. IMO, it is worth it. We remain supportive and highly survivable via our placement of Staff 5 (chaos storm) on our allies, keeping Phantasms up which provide regen to nearby teammates, and we now can strategically use the focus for reflects, very handy for the harpy fractal or any enemy with projectiles. Our high uptime of chaos armor remains, as we are still trying to Phase Retreat (Staff 2) or Illusionary Leap (Sword 3) out of every combo field we see! And, I do love the fact that for select boss fights you can quickly swap the focus for your pistol, and swap Dueling IV for IX without having to pay to retrait. When you can stand safely in melee range, the sword is awesome, and for fights like Alpha in CoE you can often blurred frenzy in lieu of dodging. Like the staff, the focus requires some practice, especially when it comes to the reflect; I’ve read that you want to place temporal curtain either at your feet, or at the mobs feet for the reflect to work properly. Unfortunately not as large and consistent as the Guardian’s wall, but play around with it. The pull can also be used creatively from temporal curtain, and FYI it does not aggro mobs if you remain at range.
Please enjoy and any feedback is welcome We are currently at fractal 34 and cruising smoothly, and I’ve found this build to be fun and beneficial to our static.
I think at least a couple of classes could benefit from this trinity of stats on their gear. Personally, as a Mesmer, this is a set that I would like to see. Perhaps other classes could chime in here as well.
LF US server… currently 1pm eastern, thanks
Thank you for posting this Pyro. I enjoyed reading it, and will not offer any arguments. To the rest of you, go make your own guides instead of nitpicking his.
Looking for uncontested on US servers
Very Nice! Lupicus should group up with 4 of his buddies, and they should try to work out a strat to beat you lol!
Wtf I did not use the word “kitten” in my post. Let me be on record that I hate these forums using that word as a verb for nerf, decrease, or lower. /annoyed
Thinking of the Rabid set for my staff and sword /pistol build. Is sacrificing all power worth it? Doesn’t it kitten phantasm damage? Or is it made up by cond dmg and confusion?
Hey Guys – As a screenshot junkie, I wanted to make a pictorial showing some of my (mis)adventures thusfar in Tyria. These screenshots are just for fun, not to boast, and they include some memorable moments, locations, or sometimes I just dig the lighting or graphics. I have cropped many of them, but no other editing has gone on. In more recent pictures, you might notice I do use the “sweetfx mod”, which works with many dx9 games. I hope to keep this thread going with further adventures, feel free to check back and leave comments – enjoy!
Check out the Da Vinci Build;

Use “as is” for more support, or try the alt build toward the bottom of first post for a little more phantasm dps.
For support/survival, check out my Da Vinci Mesmer; I’ve had great success in dungeons and we’re currently running fractal 30. Note, this is not a dps build though.
