From what I’ve done against Golem
Thief Staff DPS is just shy of Fresh Air Ele.

Taking 25Might, Fury and Quickness
With
Empower Allies, Assassins Presence (?), Str and Dis Banner 2x GoTL Spotter and Frost. I got Staff DPS around 1k DPS less. (26.3k vs 27.4k)

Also taking into account my Thief as of current doesn’t have any Ascended Armour, so the DPS is a little closer then that.
Not to mention the superior breakbar destruction thief now has due to BV VenomShare baseline. So for VG / Matt (Unless your using Aura Ele) Theif might just be better then ele in terms of damage and usefulness considering that less classes have to take CC instead of something else that might boost damage instead =P.
(Yes I’m trying to push thief into at least one boss, yes I am biased, yes I have both classes)

Against a moving target I’m certain Thief DPS will outshine Ele FA due to the nature of static AoEs. Against Staff Ele w/ Large Hitbox. Staff Ele is still better.

Thief is definitely better against vale guardian. Ele vs thief on matthias largely depends on how badly you want to clear ice patches and now much you trust your thief not to accidentally give matthias 150% damage with autoattack (though thief is going to win in DPS because it’s tough to keep matthias still and because shadowstep lets you get more attacks off).

Against xera and sabetha thief is going to give better damage than D/W but the ele will be much better at killing adds so it’s really a matter of what you prefer for your comp.

As you said ele still destroys everything with a large hitbox.

Since you should run d/d anyways I don’t think you should be reflecting with staff auto…

The rotation for the D/D thief is just CnD, Backstab, 2 full auto chains, repeat. Be sure to slot a dagger mainhand on one weapon swap and just a dagger offhand on the other weapon swap. This is to swap weapons on cool down to make use of quick pockets to keep initiative up. Also use steal every time it’s off cd for the extra initiative. With all buffs and toxic sharpening stones/seaweed salad you should be able to maintain about 35k dps on the golem with 4 mill health. This is with the DA/CS/Tr build. I’m some tests I found it worth it to use HS at 25% by a small margin. I plan to test this further

ive been having this issue for about a week as well. it would be nice to figure out what is causing this. ive opened all ports needed for gw2 and still no luck.

I’m having this issue as well. I have tried every -assetsrv’s that have been listed and none have helped. a few of them show up as error trying to connect to servers but the others are just showing up as “unable to connect to the server. please try again or contact support.”

Nope I was running with a group of friends, who all know how to speed run and they invited a few thief friends of theirs from other guilds. Also if I remember right when I ran with you, you did d/p on abom

Personally sometimes I like running thief for the stealth and such, some fun gameplay outside defiant stripping. That role, well I’m not a huge fan. However I always felt expected. If someone told me “don’t worry about it on XXXX” well, I’d be quite relieved.

Just saying, not everyone is opposed to being given tips or being told how a group runs.

But, I also default to D/P on Abom, it’s how I solo him, it’s how I PUG him, so it’s just what I’m used to, I’d have no problem not if someone told me not to worry about it

I would run d/d and d/p for Abom if your group freezes right away and doesn’t use it to interrupt. You can knock off the defiance quickly and then swap back to d/d.

Basically thief is just getting a really nice damage buff and a lot of survivability, since we can take invigorating precision over hidden killer for the crit strikes trait line.

The build will most likely be

For underwater combat, grab a berserker spear, and if you want to minmax it, force sigil+ something. I use wrath because the only moment where I’m underwater is hotw, but you could take undead if you’re wandering in orr. Spam 4 and 2 to win.
There’s cheap food on the tp giving power andprecision, use those.

1.): yes u rely on BS till boss is at 25% then heartseeker spam.

Technically if you are flanking the boss you begin HS spam at 50%. If you aren’t flanking, don’t bother backstabbing at all.

Never heart seeker spam until 25% if you’re fighting a boss that takes more than 30 seconds from 50-25. Backstab from 50-25%. Also even if you aren’t flanking you can still Cnd/BS until 50 to proc revealed training. If you’re not flanking heart seeker at 50%.

Subject alpha has different attacks depending on which of the 3 paths you choose.

If you are doing path 1 he just does his ranged rock spike attack and his burning attack. His rock attack is not a big problem if everyone is in melee range and you’re group has decent dps. His burning attack can be aegis cycled by your guardian or simply dodged when you see him put his hand up.

If you are doing path 2 he has a big aoe ice circle attack and the burning attack. When you see the huge aoe ice circles count to 3 then dodge roll. After you dodge roll and see the evade frames your guardian should then use an aegis to prevent you from getting hit from the burning attack. So 1,2,3 dodge, then aegis.

If doing path 3 just dodge the ice circles the same as in path 2. Your guard doesn’t have to aegis after the dodge in this path.

Same, the lag im getting feels like 300+ ping or packet loss lag but when i checked both, they were fine. It is certainly server side. Im from South East US btw, alabama to be specific.

The damage vs 3 targets will be greater than the damage vs 2 so s/p will still be better for larger trash groups.

None of this is correct. For PvE Thief is a great class for stealthing and it is the highest dps class in the game for single target bosses. The build for PvE is 6/6/0/0/2 with full berserker gear. Hi Divine! Thanks for chiming in. I’ve read the guides (and I’ll be sure to watch the vid you posted), but the thing is, they all already assume you’re fully geared out and know the dungeons. Are you suggesting that for a freshly leveled thief who is learning dungeons, I go straight for a zerk/scholar setup? Can that even be purchased with ~30g?

You probably cant purchase full scholar and zerker gear with 30g but if you farm some easy dungeon paths you can easily get the gold to buy it or you can buy the gear and use ruby orbs until you have the money for scholar. Also, to answer your first question I would recommend starting with full zerk so that you dont learn with any crutches.

They dont. http://gw2dps.david-reess.de go compare both in optimal party compositions, or even non optimal party compositions. Thief will still be higher.

As mentioned above, for full stealth put 3 points into shadow arts for longer stealth. Make sure to always have a pistol offhand equipped as well as a shortbow for blasting. For heal/utilities use hide in shadows, smokescreen, blinding powder, and shadow refuge. Drop a smokescreen and blast it 5 times, when you see your stealth about to run out use shadow refuge. Once stealth is low again use pistol 5 blast it twice with shortbow, then use blinding powder in it as well. (blinding powder is a blast finisher and gives 3 seconds of stealth)

Atse if you use an energy Sigil in offhand sword and make use of burst refillers you shouldn’t need regen food…you shouldn’t say lupi is a joke when you can’t even solo with or without energy food…

Join a good guild. If your good enough go for DnT, LOD, or any other good US dungeon guild. If EU try rT, HC or another good EU guild.

Is Anet ever gonna do anything about Arah exploits other than making it harder for less experienced players = more profitable for exploiters?

I get extreme lag spikes at night. During the day it is fine but at 5pm central time it never fails… I start getting ping spikes until about 9am the next morning. As a hardcore dungeon runner/soloer this is a big issue. I submitted a ticket yesterday but no response yet. Here recently I’ve been disconnecting every few minutes as well, which is making this unplayable. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

i do more damage then a team can, i even kill champs on my own while other profs need a team to do the same.
i heal, support, do massive DPS and even take down whole groups almost blindfolded.

BUT all the professions have different time kills. That’s the problem, well actually, it means some professions are better. ;p

For PVE you want GS and Axe/Mace

There is no place for healers in this game. It’s all about dps. Every class has the ability to heal its self and keep themselves alive. All classes offer their own type of support, such as warrior banners, ranger frost spirit/spotter, guardian reflects and boons, Ele might stacking, etc.

I never said anything the damage professions do. Main thing about pug groups are about staying alive in my opinion. Some have better utility skills than others. Why use professions with less resources compared to others like warriors, guardians, and mesmer?

Most people don’t like necromancers, engineers, or rangers because they don’t have much to offer. It’s not always about the damage they do.

You really need to broaden your understanding of the classes, then.

I’m not saying that every class is equal. Warriors don’t have Spotter and Frost Spirit. I make perfect sense, you just aren’t able to understand it, and that is probably due to a willful ignorance.

Why are you always trying to change the topic from utility skills so you can look right? Can’t you accept some professions have better pve utilities than others? You also have issues with warriors because I mention warriors/guardians/mesmers but you only mention warriors. I think you should roll a warrior, since you think about them so much.

Every class brings something to the table, except maybe necro’s, but they still deal around the same dps as all of the other classes.Therefore every class has its uses.

I was the guildie that duo’d p4 with him, that guy who kicked us has kicked me from several p2 solos of arah and cost me alot of money. I didnt use any exploits what so ever in the solos, legit lupi solos and everything therefore he had no reason to kick me. Ban this kitten

If you have a suggestion to improve them or an alternative build please do tell. Just popping off and saying “neither of those builds are good” offer up an alternative. The guardian build provides good boons has lots of blinds spammable virtue of justice in all fights but boss fights and good group Condi clear. The mesmer build has high phantasm damage the focus pull group Condi clear and group healing without sacrificing damage. If you have alternative builds that offer good support and help clear dungeons faster please do tell.

Maybe if you weren’t such a kitten, ignoring all helpful criticism and lashing out at people that tried to help you in your selfish builds thread, then maybe people would be more willing to help you.

And by terrible I don’t mean jportell build, but mesmers camping gs at 1200 range during the golem fight.
