About pvp api.

  • past pvp matches, i.e. results of pvp tournament by character name / flag (but I feel there’s no any indicator of so)
  • ranked and unranked statistics – how many games are played by day, what’s the most played map, etc.
  • what’s the percentage of each profession in pvp – statistics

About pve api

  • what’s the missing part of map completion by character (players wants it for such a long time, and api would give a chance to create app showing these stuff interactively)

How unranked made me wanna play pvp again.

Background: I had my on and offs with pvp, I’m not a pro player, playing half-casual in pvp.

What I hated in ranked is constant rage from “hardcore” players – not necessarily pointed at me -verbal abuse to less good players is probably the worse and should be other topic.

When MMR didn’t work good enough, and “hardcore” players were matched in same team with players few skill tiers lowers, they were angry and stressed. They all want close matches to have real chance to get higher on leaderboard.

And here we get unranked – we’ll probably see some of these bad behavior after a while even there, but mostly it should be less stressful to people who care about leaderboards. And that’s good. Even playing less popular maps can be more fun than annoying there.

After all, I like this change and I think with proper MMR unranked will really help with health of pvp community.

I think an achievement-based unlock like that would be fun, probably the best way IMO.

If that’s considered too restrictive, I think another reasonable way to get them could be to have some repeatable achievement, like:

Maximally Fractal

  • 0/50 level 50 runs completed
  • Reward chest: Fractal Weapon Box

I think it’d be fair to give someone a fractal skin of their choice after they do 50 runs (or maybe a little bit lower) at the max level.

That’s probably most fair option, while it could be something about 20 – 30 lvl 50 runs (almost a month of daily runs), giving us an option to get fractal weapon skin or ascended box of choice (since it’s still lots of farming).
And it’s probably the easiest thing to implement, since they can use activity-type achievments (every 6th match rewards rare box).

Outside of what was said already.

Flame Turret overcharge together with bombs #4 and grenades #3 is great for blinding in Cliffside.

Toss Elixir R with 3 points in last tree can be great way to support your dying party members.

Harpies: about 12 seconds of stealth from blasting smoke field (big ol’bomb, healing turret, trumphet turret), additional 5 sec from elixir S, you can finish with toss elixir B for stability.

going to defend engis a bit. Leaving rest of discussion untouched, because most of stuff people already said about ele and thiefs are true.

Engi, outside of thief, is probably best vuln stacker you’ll ever get. And they do this without placing dark fields everywhere. 25 stacks of vuln = 25% dps increase. Additional they have high aoe burst with rifle and toolbelt skills + get some useful utilities if needed: 12 sec of stealth from blasting + 5 sec for elixir s, elixir u projectile block / reflect (good for complementary use), fire fields every 10 seconds for LH ele, aoe cleanse with pretty good heal on 15 sec cooldown, blinds with flame turret, bombs and grenades, defiant stripping, knockbacks (which is kinda annoying most of the time).

That makes them not as useful as thief or ele (most of the time), but actually more useful than second or third warrior in balanced party.

But, well, I’m not a pro dungeon speed runner. I’m doing dungeons pretty efficient with my guildies, and don’t have too many problems with fractals, since we’re running pretty balanced parties.

We fell into the trap of “big numbers” and lack of dps meter. People still think warrior is better than anything else because of hb. But actually they’re not best dps class, they’re just easier to play than ele and thief.

Oh, and as some could state above, as main engi I’m getting my party killed, because particle effects make it harder for everyone. At least with grenades.

I probably could go with boons on gadgets for aegis, elixir S and elixir U / elixir R. But it’s even more annoying than it was for engi.

Ascended armor or 10/10/10 AR infusions being a requirement for the tournament is pretty gross. One of the most important parts about tournaments is inclusivity, and 70+ AR is a huge exclusion. I would love to participate, but I have only shelled out that kind of cash for my Warrior, which limits my flexibility in the tournament. I can’t bring my 6 non-heavy classes as a result! Being serious about the tournament is irrelevant; asking someone to spend cash as an entrance fee essentially is bad form. The difference in difficulty between L50 and L40 is practically nonexistent as far as speed clearing the fractals would be concerned.

Anyway, I like fractals. Maybe I can pull together [FGS] for a go at this as well, but if they don’t all have the required AR I may be forced to pub again!

As stated before, there are few things that has to be approached differently on level 50 than on level 40 or 49.

It’s understandable that you don’t like KINGs way to create rules. One thing you can be sure is that they didn’t come up without huge discussion. No one wants to give away 4k gold from his own money without thinking it through.

Doesnt remove the issues though.

Think about DnT tournament. You weren’t able to predict which dungeon will be picked by second team and by DnT. And there’s more dungeons than fractals. There’s more than 30 dungeon paths and only 15 fractals. Treat it as some sort of test: you get 15 question to learn and some of them might come up, some of them won’t. Sure thing is: you won’t get anything aside those 15 questions.

RNG is existant only if you’re not prepared for some of those fractals. Same with any other test.

Gear gating is not a challenge. I would of suggested fractal 49. :P

Anyway this tournament seems like it would be far too stressful for competitors and thats coming from someone who loves fractals. Doesnt really appeal. Maybe anet can remove RNG rolling and then we can have a proper tourny.

To me, this sounds like an awful rng torture.

There’s a reason why every fractal will have set points. RNG is taken under consideration. You should be able to do every fractal consistently though. I.E. if you have problems with beating Mai Trin and don’t have a problem with Jade Maw… well… it’s your problem.

Problems I see:
- if map is almost full it’s super hard to split people into 6 groups;
- some bosses are easier with 5-man than 10-man group, on some you need certain professions to be effective. I.E doing destroyers without reflects is almost plain stupidity;
- paying for starting an event with almost no loot?! Why? It’ll be deserted in few days. People have to pay to get achievments. Give this new festive token that you get from meta as gold reward, since that’s the only way to get weapons (afaik).
- giving bosses additional skills after killing other bosses. It’s just ridiculous how much coordination it would take to kill all of them in the same time. Otherwise it’s getting really annoying, but doable.

Chaith, maybe it should work similar to mesmer’s temporal curtain, but with conditions. For example it could be 2 second immobilize on impact and then 2 second cripple but not stacking (if opponent already have cripple it wouldn’t put it on him again). I know there was a design decision to stack conditions in duration – immobilize, cripple, etc. But maybe, just maybe, this kind of skills have their place.

One important thing I want to shout out here: Why we haven’t discuss about this change before?!

There are lots of ways to make this trait usuful, but not overpowered, and instead you’re just simply destroying it. If you were about make it designed almost the same way either narrow it down to damaging conditions and change threshold to 33% or make it active.

I understand you want to nerf decap engi, but I’m afraid you’ll destroy it completly instead of nerfing it. That’s pretty bad decision, dumbing down whole play.

Another thing, till you guys completly delete pvp crafting materials, can you at least give us a chance to buy “blueprints” for some amount of copper or silver? I’m still sitting on 1k of arcane powder, some of us would possibly love to make some dyes, but we need consumable token. Let it be even a cost of 5 silver, but make it possible, please.

Alpha is basically the same in both p2 and p3. It’s only path 1 that’s different (super easy mode).

All 3 alphas are easy but path 2 is IMO easiest because he does not use his Teeth of Mordremoth attack. If you range him you can literally walk out of both AoEs.

Why fighting Alpha on range?! I can understand if 3 people are dead already and you have to kite him, but other than that – there’s no reason not to go full meelee.

As someone who was doing wurm for about 3 weeks, with 3 full kills, this change makes me kinda sad.

We wanted this changes weeks ago, because achievments as they were, made whole thing lot harder. As soon as someone got one head killed, he moved to another one – so we were losing experienced player (or at least a bit experienced) on one wurm and gaining not experienced on another. At least on Deso, as it is pug based fight (pugs are still required to get to teamspeak), we had to make counting for about half an hour every time and tell everyone about strategy, again.

Since the new patch will probably make fighting with wurm on main map a lot harder (people waiting to get to LA will take slots, and some people will just go for new update for 2 weeks), I don’t see myself killing wurm again in the next two weeks. Another thing is, as mentioned above, “fix” after which wurm get invulnerable from time to time, many times for more than 5 seconds. And I don’t understand, why I won’t get this new title based on my progress. I highly believe there’s a way to find out, who got his Daily Chest for wurm, and based on that, give those people new title.

At current situation we need to have about 30 – 40 people, who know, what they’re doing, and the rest of people who know how to play. We’re still trying to dumb strategy a bit, but it’s not as easy as it was with Teq.

People who really need to know are commanders and (on Deso) Keg Running leader, next elementalists and condi party. Rest only have to listen to commanders and phase 1 can be done in about 10 minutes.

Phase 2 needs more experience from “zerg” players, but there’s no real strategy there. Just stack on commander, dps and don’t die. Commander will know where to stand.

Mad Queen Malafide: as someone who was doing wurm for the lat 3 weeks I’ll disagree with you. Wurm is complex in both macro and micro scale. It’s not visible outside of organised runs (TTS, TxS, BG, Deso). On organised runs groups are more spread out. It’s coming to have 4 – 5 condi necros, 4 – 5 eles, and few people doing other stuff on specific wurm. Phase 2 may be an dps check, since we still didn’t find better strategy, but phase 1 is coming to be dependent on every single player doing good job not dying and doing what he should be doing. It’s a bit more forgiving for single players in phase one, but if you want to you, for example, 20 players for keg running on Cobalt, every one of them is important.

On Wurm every single player is important, and every single player can contribute greatly. It’s closer to organised wvw runs than to pure zerg strategy. On the other hand Marionette is a bit too rewarding for the amount of work you have to do. Fighting in lines is easy for experienced people, as well as fighting on platforms.

If we’ll get better strategy, and people will be more experienced, we’ll be able to do it without voip. One of better runs on Deso was with ts being down for 3 minutes or so.

We’re already getting close to have phase 1 almost farmable. And phase 2 is mostly about abusing broken mechanics. Till ANet fixes it, voip will be necessary. After that, who knows?

Ok, the 10 sec invul was fix with main patch. Not the smaller ones.

@Josh Foreman: plz, can we expect any official statement about what you did change? We’re loosing dedicated players on Deso already, because some stuff has still unknown mechanic (especially during second phase).

Another thing is: few more days and the biggest achievment will be “You blowed more than 50 flamethrowers during 1 minute window” and that’s really unhealthy.

We have as many leechers from Deso, as we have from other servers. Many people quit trying to do wurm, because of all these people not getting into teamspeak or talking kitten about commanders.

Seriously, sometimes I think there should be an option to kick a player from main map. Some are not only not helping, but destroying the community too.

Of course Wurm has it’s problem. But it’s only their second try to make rally hard world boss, which need better organisation.

And I completly disagree that wurm doesn’t have it’s place in the game. We’ve got many guesters on Deso and we don’t mind that, at least they’re on ts and try to learn our strategy.

Wurm has similar problem to pvp nowadays. In pvp when player comes from hot-join to tournament matches – he won’t know how to play good. When we’re talking about wurm – when people come from other servers, or they were only doing it on overflow – they think they know what’s the strategy, but in fact organised kill is totally different, than decapitation on overflows. We still meet people asking us about zerg strategy on teamspeak [sic!].

The difference between TxS and Deso kills is that on Deso almost nobody uses Fire Elemental Powder and Ogre Whistle. And we still were able to kill it twice already.

People will whine that they can’t do Wurm on their servers. Well, it happens and it’s a problem of your server community.

Every single step of this encounter was planned by the people running the attempts on Blackgate (I imagine it must have been similar on Deso…it was great to see the information sharing going on). Strategies were tested until the best ones were proven after days and days of attempts. .

And we’re still talking about how to improve after every attempt.

I was thinking about afk check too. Give commanders an ability to make an afk check (like you’ll get notification in the middle of the screen and have 5 – 10 minutes to click on it, otherwise you’re getting kicked out to OF). Or before these huge events check afkers, give them notification and kick them to overflow.

Of course that wouldn’t matter if the event scalling was working perfectly. But I’m pretty sure it’s not easy to make events scale properly, so no rush here.

3 Headed Wurm achievement thoughts

We’ve had this discussion on Deso teamspeak. And yes, this whole achievment thing mess things up.

To be constructive for devs:

People should be rewarded for every head that is killed during the event. If I’m on Cobalt and every worm went down I should get achievment. Same thing with heads. Otherwise achievment hunting will mess things up. Even 5 people going from one head to another can make a huge difference.

Title should come with another achievment with 0 points on it “Killed all three heads in one fight”. This way achievment hunters wouldn’t whine so much (they’re mostly about achievment points, not achievments themself), and people who actually get the kill will feel more rewarded, since drop isn’t a sure thing.

Really, if you’re going with hardcore content you can be sure achievment hunters will hate it, because they don’t have time for that (they’re already doing massive daily chore). Worm kill needs long practice and only hardcore gamers will take it. And they’re not going for ap, they want fame and that feeling of doing something amazing (vide happiness after killing worm on videos from Deso).

There’s a problem with UI. I’ve watched videos from Cobalt and Crishmond kill on Deso. When I was on Cobalt we’ve seen about 15% more on Crishmond and then out of nowhere 0%, but in reality it was dropping steady. Good

  1. The fight is really difficult, not pug based
  2. Condis are getting little attention
  3. Strategies in phase 1 are interesting.

Bad

  1. We still don’t know how these fights scale
  2. Amber is too hardcore, compared to Cobalt and Crishmond
  3. DPS check in third phase. Timer is a bad fail mechanic there. Really bad.
  4. Too luck based fight.
  5. Ranger hate. Basically you don’t really need thiefs, engineers and rangers. Guardians, elementalists and mesmers are semi-useful. Warriors are superb, again.

Missing

  1. Better fail mechanic in the last phase.
  2. Rewards from fully killing it. I would love to see account bound ascender gauntlets for killing it. Now you don’t even have to fully kill it to get your title.
  3. Trait retrainer in Bloodtide Coast. I used instant trait retrainer, but it’s not a great thing.
  4. Information about noutritient. What does it do?!

It got out of event zone, maybe that was causing the event ui to show wrong amount of hp.

@Arnath.2319: we had few people guesting on Deso during this event. As far as I’m concerned – if you’re on teamspeak, you’re alright. There wasn’t any toxic atmosphere there. Once we were a bit disturbed, because of the overflow system – one of our commander disconected and couldn’t get back to main server.

We were spread on 3 worms too. I was on Cobalt group, so I can quickly write our “strategy”.

4 groups on Cobalt.
“keg runners” about 22 people.
“full condi” 5 full condi necro with epidemic
“zerker warriors” 5 full zerker melee range warriors
“mobs killers” about 15 – 18 people

Condi team was going for husks.
Keg runners was doing what our leader – Alpaca on the last few days. Taking down invul stacks is easiest on Cobalt, so look on video how we did it. Basically we were waiting with last burn phase for Amber (because their thing is the hardest to do), this time Crimson killed their worm first, so we dpsed Cobalt as quickly as possible. Then we took new food buff with power precision instead of power vitality and started killing adds. After that it’s all about being able to dps head.

I was part of Cobalt keg runner team. It was constant fight with our capabilities. Strategy is one thing, but the most important thing was our experience. We was doing this for about 3 days in a same 150 – people group, together on teamspeak, few times being really far from winning and getting really upset.

Josh, the master of SAB, was behind this? Now I know why it’s so cool. Devs, don’t get a bad feeling from this, I admire work of every one of you, who was contributing on this content.

As for the downsides. I understand Worm being hard to puzzle (already tried it few times), but Marionette… I really think Devs, not Dulfy, should make a video showing basic tactics and talking about what’s going on. Most of the things are well designed, but “mine twisted” is too dependent on one guy – the one with aggro. It creates huge pressure for them. The “group one” is annoying, because they sometimes got stuck on terrain when pulling / knockbacking – making them hard to pull in one place.

And the randomness is pretty annoying – you never know which fight you’ll have to take. Make it a bit less random, just so people can compensate with they’re communication – for example commanders should be able to send everyone from their party to different boss.

People get angry not on you, but on these poor little guys, who don’t really know, what’s going on.

Don’t get me wrong here either – I’m only stating that if people might get angry it’s better if they’re angry on devs, than on the other players.

This thread again? You’re not able to kill ar engi? Change to power engi, istead of condi. Conditions are hard counter to anti dps bunkers, AR is hard counter to conditions.

Do you see thiefs crying about unkillable guardians? Or does mesmer do that? Is that much different?

Wait a minute, you forgot that you’ve got one bursty condition already, which is terror? All these comparisions to engis are stupid. Engi is close to necro if we talk about spamming, but it got only one burst condition and half that much cc. Just find new builds, experiment a bit more, istead of whinning on forums.

PvP shouldn’t be balanced around top200 or top300 players. It’s just ridiculous. You’re forgetting how strong necro is on lower tier games.

I played since the beginning: pure condi necro, necro boon corrupter, engi grenadier, engi bunker with automated response and phantasm mesmer (s/f + gs). Most spammy was condi necro (now “terror” necro) and engi grenadier. Engi bunker, even with automated response, need some cooldown management. Phantasm mesmer with s/f and gs is not so spammy too. You’ve got less possible choises than shatter mesmer, and you can’t mindlessly spam everything, like condi mesmer. I played thief a little bit, and it doesn’t feel so spammy too.

As for your question about outshining with skill – watch for example Teldo. He’s build, back few months ago, wasn’t crazy good. But in his hands it was deadly. I’m sure there are more of this kind.

@Decrypter: 6v6 is fun to play, just like 15v15, but it fails on stream. You can’t see what’s going on, people dying from few hits from thiefs, etc. I tried to watch it, but it was boring as hell.

I think 2v2s are more fun to watch nowadays. I believe it’ll be one of new game modes in the future.

Just few words from semi-competitive player.

Idea behind changing how sigils works are a bit misty for me. Yes, it took time to understand how sigils work in the first place, but Devs clearly stated why 2h weapons have only one sigil slot – they’re more powerful than 1h weapon in first place.

What I would change to make new players less confused:
1. Better tooltips on sigils – simple “on crit”, “on swap”, “stacking”, etc. with recharge written same as traits now have.
2. Video tutorial and explanation why and how this work – with good tooltips it should be easier.

Unlockable stats:
Another thing, that came from not making good tutorial videos, being able to watch in game. New players don’t know anything about what’s going on, they try and fail with everything and sometimes end up with a knowledge.

If you want to give them a knife and go to the wild, so then can learn for their own – I don’t accept it. They’ll meet bandits with better weapons, wild animals, etc. That’ll scare them off. Player base is too small to divide new players from experienced players. If we could divide these two groups – we could give new players some easier start, but since we can’t, we’ll send them for sure death. After they’ll see they cannot yet take stats they need to, they’ll run away.

With that said – I think unlockable skills was a shot in the foot. You started it, and before you’ll see the results of that decision – it may be too late for changes.

Small nerfs and buffs here and there.
I agree with Helseth – we’re having power creep. You gave more deffensive options, so to compensate it – you gave more offensive options, after that you again gave more deffensive options, and so on, and so on.
Look at hambow warriors now – they have most of the stuff you need in just one build – hard cc, medium dps, tankiness. It’s better to take second hambow warrior, than second character with only some of these options. I remember, when I start playing pvp – guardian needed support from, for example, necro to deal with condi cleanse, mesmers needed someone with cc to make good combo, warrior needed cc to land 100-blades. We’ll have less viable builds, since people can’t take one role in a fight, because it’s not enough. You need to be super tanky on your own and additionally really supporty, or semi tanky and have high dps, etc.

Additionally – one day you nerfed hgh engi, now we have more sd builds, which are even worse, because they have the same problems hgh had then – they’re superior in 1v1. And they can’t go less dps, because of warriors and guardians.

Obviously, I like current meta more than spirit ranger + dhummfire necro meta from few months ago. But games are still less strategy, than they should be.

I’m looking now at my engi – with which I really didn’t try going full turret build (which would be AI too), and my mesmer. My main was necro for really long time, but didn’t really like minion master.

I want to talk a bit about how it is playing these builds and how I see counters for them.

Engi with turrets.
Turrets deal moderate damage, are a bit buggy, still not many found their full potential. It’s mostly about utility – net turret and rocket turret, and healing – healing turret. They are easily killable, don’t give passive effects (other than regen). Summary – they’re not a real problem in pvp, because you’ve got to mix them with other utilities to be effective.

Minion master.
I often play against minion masters on pvp. Two thoughts – their attacks aren’t well telegraphed; Moa is ultimate minion master killer.
If I play against minion master, with phantasm mesmer, and have moa on my cooldown, I have lower chances to win. I was playing hgh engi before and killing all the minions and necro was really hard – maybe because of the traits.

Phantasm mesmer.
That’s a huge family of builds. There are full zerker phantasm mesmers, mesmers with phantasmal defender, and with many different weapon sets.
It’s close to balance, because if you want to be succesful phantasm mesmer you will have limited stun breaks. Mostly you won’t take any phantasm type utility. You stay with greatsword, focus, pistol, sometimes offhand sword. You won’t be using your shatter skills, so your abilities are more limited than those of shatter mesmer. You won’t be using most of skills than mitigate your damage, because you’ll be afraid of losing your precious phantasms. I don’t use pistol or offhand sword, because their skills are harder to avoid. Pistol phantasm should be a little more handicapped, because dodging it’s channeling may be super hard. Warden have huge damage, but when it’s starts it’s channeling your opponent have to stay in one place to get hit – so it often miss – good risk / reward. There are builds that have really high cleave dps, like guardians, who will make fun of any phantasm mesmer on small point. I think phantasms, with it’s limits, are not that easy to play with.
