Can you go into more detail about these builds? Like what mayor traits do you use?
Hi necromancers,
Returning player here, played at release and on / off in the last year. I’m looking for some advice on my gear.
I play mostly WvW in bigger groups, since the people I used to play with all quit I just tag along with whatever commander is active. Using staff / wells mostly for blanket AoE.
At the moment I am using Carrion armor and crappy (green / yellow) trinkets, but with low toughness I feel squishy. I’m thinking of getting a full set of Soldier armor / trinkets, or should I consider Apocatery? Secondary weaponm is either scepter if I get more condition damage, or axe if I go Soldiers.
This is my build:

Any and all advice / thoughts are welcome, please critique my build if I’m doing something stupid ;-)
Thanks necromancers!

Thieves will love you and try to hug you all the time when you run this in any kind of PvP situation. Thief hugs hurt.
Same thing happened to me just now, it tells me to run the game with -repair one time. Go to your shortcut and at the end of the target line put -repair.
Like others have said, the CANNOT escape aspect of the class is not really showing at the moment.
Thanks everyone who was at the BG garrison last night (EU time, afternoon eastcoast time I think). That was the sickest fights I have had in weeks. JQ coming in from the east and SBI from the north, both hitting the lord room within minutes of eachother. Good try on the turtling, it was fun to see it used against us for a change.
Nokaru.7831There are a few European guilds on Blackgate. In Europe, there is a tactic where they “Turtle”. A large group (40+) will group in one spot to reduce incoming AoE damage because AoE only hits 5 targets. It also exploits the fact that some heals (Warrior shouts, etc.) have no target cap, and you can spam dome-like reflect abilities (Sanctuary, Shield of Absorption, etc.) to protect your zerg. They usually move using Mesmer Portal. It is a common tactic in Europe and they are using it here because they transferred to Blackgate a few weeks ago.
[KDS], [RK] and [HB] hold hands together in a “Turtle”.
“Guys, we’re being AoEed! Quick, group up!”
I am offended, you left out my guild [MA] Mystical Awakening which is also part of this ‘exploiting’ alliance.
When someone says “Epic” or “Heroic” I think of the Warrior even though I’ve never made one myself… yet.
Crazy over the top combat moves and in WvW they are often carrying huge battle banners.Going melee in WvW usually isn’t smart though.
Healing shout warrior is pretty cool aswell, you can still to pretty nice damage with hammer and everyone will think you’re a hero with your heals.
I don’t know about other classes but I feel super epic when I put someones conditions on everyone using Epidepic and then popping Plague Form to see numbers absolutely explode of my screen!
Replace the word grind with having to work for “anything”. Character progression with reward is the most important part of these games.
If you don’t understand this component to online games, you just don’t get it.
Actually from my perspective these games have not been about character progression untill World of Wacraft came out. Before that I played Dark Age of Camelot and I was extremely suprised when I found out each big content update made your gear ‘obsolete’, or not the best in game. With DAoC (pre-expension) you could just craft something akin to exotic armor in Guild Wars 2 and that was it, off to RvR you went without a worry in the world.
It is a generational distinction (I think) with people who started playing MMOs when WoW came out and are more focused on character progression, because no game does that better then WoW. For me it is a welcome step back into the past where I don’t feel like I have to play, or can’t take a break without getting behind. Saying that character progression is the most important part of ‘these games’ is looking at MMO’s like they are all World of Warcraft, but they’re not.
1- QPs lead to rankings : what rankings, need explantions, dont just throw this randomly
2- larger tournaments : same what are those tournaments ? some kind of tournament league or dunno ?
3- allow you to measure yourself against other players : what does that mean ? Team QPs = individual ranking too ?
To me it also sounds like :
Time spent = QPs = team ranking = individual ranking
I dont really like the idea but I guess its far from being set into stone.
You are right, I should not have assumed the ‘worst’ right away. On the other hand, when I read that post that is what I understand from it.
Qualification points are discussed in this post: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/structured-pvp-october-update/
Am I correct in understanding that teams that are equal in skill but 1 team plays twice as much, the team that plays more is likely to have more QPs? Or in other words, is time invested going to be a deciding factor in rankings?

Why are people upset over the state of the Necromancer? We have some of the best and most interesting utilities ingame. We can choose from corruptions, wells and signets which are all quite good. Staff is one of the best AOE pressure (the best?) weapons ingame and scepter and daggers make for a good second set. Only axe is really in the gutter right now but what profession doesn’t have 1 (or several) weapons that don’t seem viable?
Best tip I can give any Necromancer: Blood is Power. If you have either an OH dagger or a staff you will have skills to transfer conditions to the enemy (Deadly Swarm #4 OH dagger, Putrid Mark #4 staff) you can use Blood is Power and then convert the bleeding you have to the mob. If you use staff you do this: Mark of Blood > Chillbains > Blood is Power > Putrid Mark (blast finisher on Chillbains) > Epidemic (if AOE) and pretty much everything will be dead.
If you go for this setup you still have 1 utility slot left over, Spectral Walk is a pretty good one for leveling to get around a little quicker or grab a pet to make yourself feel more like a Necromancer!
@Kiraki: If you are a conditions Necromancer you will be amazing for kiting whatever comes out of burrow one. Saying you cannot do it with 2 or 3 condition spec people is a different discussion from max level or not (which is: should you be able to clear this content with just any group setup).
Dissapointed BlackGater here. Is the problem that Henge and Eredon cannot field the required numbers (i.e. is there a que on EB and borderlands?) or is the problem that you are not organized? If you hit the cap then statisticly it should be a fair fight, if not, well that would just suck even more.
Maybe we can all just go for EB? You have to be able to get a cap on 1 zone at least right? Might be able to get some fights going at least….
Not sure how cartographer works but it looks like you have all Points of Interest, might be that the website shows more data then we can ‘achieve’ ingame?
I personaly would not go for full berserker gear simply because I don’t like dying. A dead ranger does a lot less DPS than a ranger with a bit lower crit chance! Maybe try 3 berserker, 3 valkyrie and get some stats you are missing from jewelry? You’re going to have to play around a little with this to find the right balance, I don’t think anyone can just tell you what is the best for your play-style.
Finished it yesterday with a group that only had 1 level 80 character and 3 people that had never done AC before.
How to do burrow event:
You want to have 1 person kite the mobs from the front door burrow and 4 to run around killing the other burrows. I usually do the kiting because I’m a necromancer and they are very good at it (Marks at the NPC to ensure he never gets hit). Use your snare from scepter and staff to keep the enemies slow and go on the table, they path around the long end of the table to get to you. When they do you go off the table and they path around the long way again. By the time the 3rd, 4th and 5th burrow spawn you can help DPS them aswell as kite whatever is still leftover from the ‘frontdoor’ burrow. By this time I pop plague form and spam 3 (snare) to keep everything on me and slowed. Stick around the NPC while your team takes out the 6th burrow and you’re done.
Level 80 doesn’t mean you are competent and not being 80 does not mean you are not competent…. I already have a level 80, so what the hell?
So this happened to me twice just now. I got kicked when the members of the group found out I was level 52, which is apparently too low level for a AC explorable mode (level 35 dungeon). Before today I was running AC explorable on this character just fine and I never even noticed that this was uncommon. Completed story and all paths without any issues in different pugs.
Are these dungeons supposed to be hard and do people actually feel this way?
Bunkerbuster
Build
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fQAQNBIhZakRLdPeTcjePBIV45pHc7t2RPQ2YmB;TsAA0CnoKyUkoIbRuikFt6YMykAA
Staff is obvious in any build I think, it is such a powerfull AOE tool that I feel naked without. About dagger mainhand I was sceptical for a very long time, but with this build I feel it is even better then scepter in certain areas.
To kill a tank you obivously use Corrupt Boon when the oppertunity arrives. Now it’s time to kill them, it goes something like this (but it is not a set rotation):
- Dark Pact
- Autoattack chain
- Life Drain
- Wail of Doom, first interupt
- Mark of Blood (poison from weapon switch)
- Chillbains (more poison)
- Reaper’s Mark, second interupt
- Life Transfer
- Doom, third interupt
- Profit
I know what you’re thinking: easier said then done. You are absolutely right, most tanks are very good at removing conditions and will not go down without a fight. This is not a 100% win build against tanks, good one’s might still survive. Some things to remember:
- Save Blood is Power for when you need it, it give 10 stacks of might now and with the insane autoattack speed of dagger this becomes very strong. I’m getting up to 3000 damage per autoattack chain with 1 of the 3 critting (not unreasonable with 30% crit change). The last hit in the chain does 1900 damage on crit.
- Rune of Lyssa has a very powerfull 6/6 ability: when you activate it you lose all conditions and gain all boons for 5 seconds. This proc goes off on the summon and and the charge ability, make sure you don’t have your Flesh Golem out from the start but summon it mid fight when you are in trouble or want to burst.
- I tend to save my Flesh Golem charge for when I really need it, you can put it into your bunkerbusting rotation and against a good tank you will need it. Don’t forget this little golem will bowl over anyone it hits, not just your target!
As an added bonus, this build kills most thieves. As long as you have 20% life left from their initial attack you will win. Condition them up and go through your interupt rotation!
Have fun busting bunkers!
How do people saying thieves are not overpowered explain that the majority of teams (at least teams that I face) in tPvP run 2 thieves? Hell, you know wether or not you are up against a PUG or pre-made by checking for 2 thieves and / or 2 guardians, if they have them they are always a pre-made.
Maybe this is not a thief only problem, the problem is specs that are very, very good at one thing are more valuable then specs that are pretty good at 2 or 3 things. When I play tPvP I see a vast over representation of classes that are at the end of the spectrum, either on the burst end (which is where I think this thief hate is coming from) or at the tanking end (which is where I think all the gaurdian hate is coming from).
Whether you like it or not, I think a change is coming (and not just for thieves, some other classes / specs are too good at one thing aswell). Hopefully, and I don’t think it will be, the change will not be a straight up nerf. Perhaps some of the damage on these super high, 1-trick-pony-builds, can be redistrubted to other abilities so the process of choosing what to do becomes more interesting aswell.
On a side note: right now it is the thief, yes I get frustrated by these extreme damage builds aswell, but sooner or later your class is going to be the most powerfull / most popular / best at whatever. The way this game works really plays into FOTM and a lot of the current thief players will abandon their thief for your class. Don’t cry too hard when they do.
You could try making a ticket with ArenaNet, I don’t know their policy so it might not work. Otherwise salvage and hope for the best!
You have to play sPvP / tPvP (tournament) in order to gain ranks and points. When you unlock a new rank (like a level) you get a chest with stuff in it. The points can also be used to buy stuff for your current rank. At first the stuff will be more basic and look like lower level items, later you can gain some really sweet armor and weapons!
The most rediculous thing I have ever seen is a Russian guy doing pull-ups from a industrial crane like a 100 meters above ground.
I don’t know if the statement in the topic is entirely true, but I feel like it is. The lack of viable builds seems true for all aspects of the game, but since sPvP/tPvP is the most competitive I feel it there the most. I played a Ranger for a while and ended up with shortbow / traps build, when I played something else (like sword / torch) I did good for a while but then started losing more and more and more. Necromancer feels like it has to be scepter / dagger or go home, I’m playing as a dagger / horn now which works pretty good but is still not as strong as the scepter condition spec.
On top of that, I feel like 80% of the fights are the same:
- Guardians sword / focus, shield / scepter.
- Warriors 100b.
- Necromancers scepter / dagger with corruptions.
- Mesmers sword / pistol for at least 1 weapon set.
- Engineer pistol / shield conditions, sometimes rifle?
- Rangers shortbow, axe / horn mostly with traps.
Thieves I know too little about to comment on spec, I only know that most run something where they hit me for 10,000 damage and I die. Elementalists seem to have diverse builds but I might be fooled by all the different spells they have, a lot seem to run support staff.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that you should be able to do whatever you want and be succesfull, but the 2 classes I have played the most felt like they had exactly 1 spec and weapon set that was viable. This sucks in my opinion.
Dungeons are already really easy. Calling yourself a casual does not mean you can ignore making proper builds, syncronizing traits with weapons and getting some nice equipment. It just means these things take longer (correct me if I’m wrong). You still have to play the game properly.
I think Guild Wars 2 is very forgiving for people with sub-par gear and getting gear is not that hard. On level 80 you should easily be able to get a full suit of rare armor with the money you made leveling and I’m pretty sure story mode of pre-60 dungeons can be done with non-rare equiment, at least AC and CM are easy enough.
It is simply the market at work. Prices keep going up untill enough people say ‘no, this is too much’, or everyone who can and will buy the items at these prices have them. Another option is that the prices have yet to stabalize at something (this is unlikely if you say the prices rise quicker then you can farm).
Eventually they come down again, be it in a week, a month or 3 months. Once everyone who has more commitment (or better RNG) then you has their item, you can get it, after which people with less commitment then you will get theirs.

Saying you like the Ranger but not the pet is like saying you don’t like the Ranger. Pets are part of the class so my advice to you would be to not play a Ranger.
Most damage from guardian is direct damage though, so logic would dictate that in most situations / specs cleric is better.
Running into that must be awesome.
From zone completion I received a level 78 exotic dagger I sold for 90 silver. From a chest on a temple event in Orr (I think it was Zephyr?) I got a level 78 exotic heavy helmet, sold for 50 silver.
Isn’t the 400 skill exotic set only for leatherworking? I’m pretty sure you can’t get it through other means.
Not sure but wouldn’t it be ‘when hit’ and ‘on hit’? I.e. when you are hit or when hit score a hit. Not sure about this though.
@MeGaZlo.9516: Ranger gets a lot better as you level. The traitlines really gain dept as you unlock more of them and the synergy is just as high as other classes. Saying a ranger does not get stronger is just plain wrong. How the hell am I going to kill a level 20 monster if I have not gained strength since level 1? If you mean stronger in relation to mobs (i.e. it becomes easier to kill stuff as you level up) we are on par with other classes that I have played.
Any combo field + splitblade basicly!
Some professions get very high base health, like necromancer. Some professions get very high base toughness, like guardians. The trick is to balance out your base values, stats from trait lines and gear into a mixture that works for you.
if you have the gold, you can get fully exotic geared with trinkets, and weapon sets for close to 40-50g. depending on cost it can cost you more though, my full sets cost me upwards of 100g.
You must have gotten some crazy items! I’m not full exotic yet with my trinkets and rings but I spend a lot less then you! I don’t think I even spent 12g on my exotic armor and weapons…
Crafting. Even if you don’t have any matherials yourself you can get a full set of exotic armor for about 8 gold and a rare set for a lot less. Find a guildie if you don’t have the craft yourself. Orr has karma armor for 42k a piece but this will take significantly longer to get then crafted stuff.
The best armor hugely depends on what build you are running. For shortbow you want condition damage and for longbow you want power. If you are looking for pure PvE armor that works with any build, you could go for Explorers’ (magic find), but as far as I know the rare set has as much magic find on it as the exotic one so you might want to save some money for your exotic DPS / whatever set and get rare MF armor.
I would not buy the cultural armor since this is not exotic. Use your gold to buy or craft a good exotic set first, then worry about making that armor look the way you want it! Especially the highest tier cultural is veeeeery expensive for rare armor.
1) Are rangers severely dependent on micromanaging their pet?
No they are not severely dependent on it. You can set your pet to aggresive in PvE and that’s it. In WvW you will have to keep it with you a little more because they die to AoE and in PvP you’ll want to manage them a bit (they are a good chunk of your DPS).
The pet is a part of the class though! Not something to be ignored or underutilized.
2) Are the pets a pain in thekitten to manage? (Preventing them from getting killed all the time?)
In WvW yes, in PvE not at all and in PvP it is certainly managable.
3) Is a ranger viable in close-ranged situations?
Yes! There are some pretty cool melee builds for the ranger. Sword / warhorn, axe / torch is cool, greatsword has a nice build aswell. The current ‘meta’ is really focussed on shortbow / traps because the build is very versatile and easier to play though.
If you do try ranger, I would advice to play at least till leve 40. Before that point your traits and utilities don’t really sync up all that well. Past 40 you’ll have some experience and you can see the dept this class offers a lot better. I guess this is true for every class though.
Condition damage is for damage over time effects. Bleeding, burning, poison become more powerfull from condition damage as opposed to power which gives you higher direct damage. Toughness is used to reduce the direct damage you take, it reduces every hit on you by a percentage. It does not reduce condition damage taken, this is why you will also need some vitality (your health pool).
Condition damage: bleeding, burning, poison.
Power: direct damage.
Vitality: more HP, used to survive conditions since toughness does not reduce condition damage taken.
Toughness: reduces direct damage.
Don’t know exactly how similar Necromancers are to their Guild Wars 1 counterparts but they are in no way underpowered. Especially the condition build with corruptions is very strong, in sPvP and WvW anyway. Just give Necromancer a go, if they are underpowered now they will be overpowered in 2 months and rolling an ‘OP’ class now does not garantee being OP in 2 months.
Karma gear also reflects how much effort you have put into a character, what that character has done and achieved. Making it so you can level an alt to 80 with crafting and then getting it a full set of awesome dungeon armor might not be what ArenaNet want.
That’s probably a thief symbol, graphical bug? It doesn’t mean anything.
You can make a pretty spectacular Ranger with 300hp/s passive regen and an almost 100% uptime of a 300hp/s regeneration. Or try a Guardian, they are considered a very strong support class. A true healer though? No there is none in Guild Wars 2.
I ran a single 6870 and it is perfectly fine except for WvW, when the zerg hits you are going to drop to an FPS range that is not comfortable to play with (10-20).
