There’s not enough time for at least 7 blog posts (6 elite specs plus a mysterious challenging group content, unless of course that content is another “foundation” and won’t need a seperate blog post).
I do recall them saying they would do a week on each spec. What I dont recall them saying is that those weeks would be for just one spec. They could do two a week.
Im sure someone has pointed it out, but the BASE game densest have enough character slots to play one of every class. This seems the norm for most mmo’s. So I don’t see why adding another class you should expect them to give a free slot. I mean, you did choose to fill up on bread before the main course, so the onus is on you to find a way to get room for another character.
So there’s not limit on the trait lines, like idk..if you get chronomancer, you can’t use illusions ?
What you are asking is: There is no limit on weapons/utility/elite skills?
I realized what you were asking, and it wasnt that. Short answer: No. There is no barred combination of Trait lines.
The answer to that is yes, but only those that belong to the Elite Spec. You can only use a Shield, the Chronomancer Wells, if you take Chronomancer as a Spec (which you are limited to three) but you can still use all the other skills.
The determent of taking an elite spec is going to vary a lot between people, Some builds only take 2 trait lines, and the 3rd currently is just a bonus, so they are not going to lose alot. Some more complex builds take all three trait lines to work best, and if you spec into your elite specialization you will lose what ever you get from them.
It would only be a problem if both parties were barred from buying the other product.
Can someone who owns gw2 buy the expansion and get the same rewards? Yes
Can someone who doens’t own gw2 buy the game, then go and buy the expac and get the same thing? Yes
And all the other combinations
It feels silly to respond to this, since it is crazy, but no this is not anything illegal.
Since you can buy it in game, is there a way to buy Heart of Thorns as a gift for another player?

OK. But a new player is getting 5 characters slots and the expansion at $50 while existing players get the expansion only. In other words, if I and my new player friend buy the game on the same day, he gets more than I do for the same price.
Well, your new player friend would have to level up, and do a bunch of story missions, and gear up, and learn how to play. Where as a Vet you can just port to Maguuma and go to town, learn masteries and such.
Will ‘receive the light’ get a new animation?
lol… Yeahhh… Scrolls I already got the jist of.
the information I’m primarily interested in is Tomes of knowledge as well as PvP reward track potions.
I believe both those items will still work as they are working now, since the underlying mechanics of them wont be changing. i.e you can still gain levels, you can still gain pvp reward track points. The only thing I can think of, is that the tomes may work towards mastery instead of skillpoints in the future.
It takes two weeks to download a game? It took me less than an hour to download and install gw2.
In store release games get more press too. Dont you want your Gamestop exclusive Quaggan key chain?
It took me a while to parse this. I suspect it was written on a cell phone.
Anyway….
You understand this is the problem with alot of mmos. The conceit is that, the other players dont come into play. Like, you dont see some npcs at Fort Trinity going “I cant belive it, look at all the pact commanders. How can there be 12,000 commanders of the pact, and they all claim to have taken down Zhaitan”
The same goes for legendaries. if you only have one, there is only one. The fact that another player has it densest count.
Remeber it is also a Holiday in America, a federal, no work holiday. I bet we get the tease tomorrow
so how do people finish their skill and traits if they already did the skill challenge?
in PvP its not a problem, because you get them all unlocked for free, with the exception of 1 GM trait for each line, which you can buy from a pvp trainer.
in WvW, i have no idea.
Back to the OP:
Untill you can prove that pvp and wVw players are at a disadvantage NOT OF THEIR OWN CHOICE, you have no case.
I’ve floated both of those ideas myself, only to be trolled by PvE players with a million reasons why they would never work. Everyone keeps arguing that getting the hero challenges will be no big deal for us WvW players, so why wouldn’t that be true for everyone? Let’s have a level playing field. No one can disagree with a level playing field, right?
The playing field is already leveled. What is stopping someone who has only played in wvw or sPvp from doing wvw? Lets reverse it. Lets say that ranks in WvW are now what give hero points. Would it be fair to say… reset everyones wvw ranking just because the pve people and the sPvp people didnt do it?
No
Since there was nothing stopping you before from doing all three playstyles, it is your own fault that you haven’t done any map completion. The same way its my fault I have no rank in WvW or have ever finished a sPvP track.
IF and only IF these things were exclusive, and then suddenly aNet decided to make pve count for everyone, then I would support something like this. But since its not. I dont
With all the controversy and arguments over the new system for earning earning traits and skills through hero challenges, I have a proposal:
Reset all traits and skills for every character in the game to zero when HoT releases.
That will eliminate the perceived unfairness in allowing PvE players to keep their progress, …..
You said it yourself. The keyword here is perceived. Perceived unfairness is miles away from factual practiced unfairness. There is plenty of time between now and the expac to raise a character to level 80 and do map completion— twice, maybe thrice times over.
The Devs have hinted ambiguously at gliding in other zones being available at a later date, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. That’s a lot of coding changes. Also, I should note that gliders only go down (unless you hit an updraft). You can’t use them to go up or horizontal, and they can only be deployed from drops that are of a certain height.
I would also say that a lot of places would need to be rebuilt so that gliding did not undo the places original challenge, specifically where not falling is the difficulty, like some JPs
if you want hard content then go play another MMO!
If you want easy content then go play another MMO?
Seriously, there are alot of variables that make a content challanging. Triple Trouble can be challanging, but not in the same way Stepping Stones(JP) can be challanging. World Compleation is a time challange, WvW and PvP are its own challange.
I have no doubt that there will be all sorts of challanges in the expac, not just hard try-hard 100h+ a week player only, content
If only there where armors with stats you could just always reselect. that would be a legendary improvement
This has been bugging me for a few days now. I love Retreat! its a great skill. gives Swiftness and Aegis, pretty useful in a lot of situations. The only problem is…
… Does anyone actually use it to retreat?
Im sure in WvW and sPvP the time comes when you need to get away, but even there I doubt its used to for actual retreating.
any thoughts?
The question is confusing. You can play gw2 without the expansion, jus tnto any of the expansion areas elite specs, masteries or various collections or the new class
The biggest argument against this is that shapeshifting right now is sort of a Norn Racial thing.
You think they will talk about Lion’s Arch at Ready Up, a pvp show?
They spent a whole lot of time just talking about Dragonhunter on said pvp show, with only a little talk about pvp. I think for the time being PoI and Rdy^ should be thought of as a weekly dose of HoTness
Now my next pie in the sky UI request? I’d love to be able to customize what I consider to be “junk,” I could include minor runes, white gear not worth salvaging, and mats that reliably can’t be auctioned (like harden leather and some gemstones…or all the gemstones but sunstone).
These suggestions could really “expand” my game play experience.
You have my vote. A option to select things, like “Runes, Sigils, White, Green, Blue, Yellow, Orange, Pink” type items to count as junk would be a real time saver
Its a expansion ofc we get dungeons
All of the major features have been announced. Dungeons were not on the list.
The only thing I dont like about this argument is that we dont know, in Anets eyes, what constitues a major feature. For all we know, to them, Dungeons are a minor feature, and this wont be hyping them. Compared to Elite Specs, New Class, Trait Revamp and Legendary Collections— a dungeon does seem minor
Wait untill you see what all of the other shouts do before jumping to conclusions. Yes they said that the Necro shouts do damage, and that one of them summons things per enemey hit, but the others might be more supportive.
“Reaper shouts differ from warrior and guardian shouts in that they focus more on harming foes than they do on bolstering allies.”
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/meet-the-reaper-necromancers-elite-specialization/
Where does it say that none of the Shouts have support aspects? For example one of the shouts could very well be:
“Cower!”
-Enemies take damage and gain weakness. You and each nearby ally gain a stack of Might for each enemy affected".Or
“Death take you!”
-Rupture the vital organs of up to 5 nearby enemies, inflicting bleeding and dealing damage around them. Each explosion is a blast finisher.Hey look – we have enemy focused shouts that are supportive to allies and even work for condition builds (another common assumption). Stop assuming and wait for the stream.
This is a great point. We must remember support can b defensive, in the form of like, guardian buffs and such, or offensive— like crippling foes
Wait untill you see what all of the other shouts do before jumping to conclusions. Yes they said that the Necro shouts do damage, and that one of them summons things per enemey hit, but the others might be more supportive.
Mordremancer! Called it
Arbiter is a far, far better name. It fits the theme (Judge/Jury/Executioner of evil) and it’s not laughably generalist like “dragon hunter” (aka every single PC in Tyria)
Translation of Arbiter in french : Arbitre.
Yes, it’s a referee.Well, thank god Arbiter is an English word, and while it somewhat means referee there is a lot more gravitas to it’s meaning then that picture you posted.
From Dictionary.com: 1350-1400; Middle English arbitour, arbitre < Anglo-French, Old French < Latin arbiter
Its a french word. The spelling is a dead give away. Dont forget that English is a language filled to the brim with borrowed words. In fact most of the ‘cool sounding’ words are in other languages
I am not 5, I know all of this.
What I am saying is the french meaning and the english meaning are different enough to point out that we are using the english meaning since this game is in english.
Understand?
And btw, it isn’t a French word it is a Latin word. In fact most of the ‘cool sounding’ words are Latin roots. Hence why most European languages are known as Romance languages. Latin>Rome>condescending enough for you now?
Im just saying, to me, they mean the same thing. The umpire at the baseball game is an Arbiter, the judge in the grand jury is an Arbiter, heck, we are all in arbitration over the arbitrary name choice here. The meaning of the word to me is the same, everyone here us just arguing over precived conception based on the sound of something.

If the real world had dragons, big-game Dragonhunters would look more like Guardians then they would the typical British Big Game Hunter in that picture.
A couple notes on Dragonhunter. We went with this name because we felt it was evocative of the medieval witch hunters. Guardians consider themselves protectors of the innocent. Followers of their faith be it in honor, valor, etc. The origin of the dragonhunter is a more subtle nuanced version of this. Guardians fight for justice and the dragonhunter faction believes justice is the eradication of dragons and their minions. I understand this is a lot more high concept than Mesmer but at the end of the day we felt like we wanted to try and push a more mature theme here. I hope this helps explain our thinking. We had other generic names in mind but felt like it was important to have a mix of spec names that are generic fantasy, more Tyrian fantasy, and more high concept. This one falls more in the third category.
Thanks,
Jon
While i respect and your logic, the explanation, and even the name choice for the Elite Spec, allow me to play devils advocate for a moment. I belive the crux of the argument is that for the majority of players, because the games primary antagonists are the elder dragons, they feel in some way they are already hunting dragons, and are thus Dragonhunters. Both the players idea of that, and your explantion of where the name Dragonhunter comes from are valid, but to the players, the subtleness and nuance of the title gets overshadowed by the preconcived ’I already was a dragonhunter". The other known names, Chronomancer and Tempest have the distinction of being things other classes cannot claim to already be. A warrior cannot claim to be a chronomancer, a Ranger cannot claim to be a Tempest. The community would feel better as a whole if the name reflected that nature as well. “A Guardian can be a (elitespec) but a Necromancer cant”
When you fill in Dragonhunter; at its most literal level that creates a false statement in the eyes of the player, thus creating a diminished feeling, since the idea behind Elite Spec was to bring something unique.
I am fine with the name, but I feel this is the core argument against the name.
Whats wrong with the dragon part? Dragons are cool. From Puff to Smaug, Pete’s to Shooting Star. Glint was a dragon, she was pretty awesome.
What if we just change the hunter part? Wha about Dragonbane
Why does Crusader fit as a proper name and Dragonhunter does not?
- Because Crusader fits to the Theme, Style & Gameplay.
- Because it sounds like a gender neutral profession and not like a title.
- Because it also fits to the Class Type (Soldier, where Dragonhunter looks more like being Adventurers with supernatural powers in just heavy armor, its whole gameplay has nothing to do anymore with the Guardian, except for turning the Virtues now into manifestions of weapons and wings.
Crusader is a title. It is anyone participating in a Crusade, which is a Holy War. The Guardian is not intrinsicly religious. Real Guardians are just adventurers in heavy armor in this game. There is no single place that promotes Guardians. They are not an organisation.
Why does Templar fit as a proper name and Lightbow does not?
- Because unlike Lightbow, Templar is no childish stupid made up word of just two English Words put together telling people, this is a profession. Templars, or “Temple Knights” to say are known for being a proper profession in real life just as like Crusaders.
- Because it also sounds like a gender neutral profession and not like just a title like Dragonhunter does.
- Because it also does to the shared Class Type of being a Soldier, because Templars actually do/did wear heavy armors.
Aside from the fact that you undo your own argument by saying that Templar is not just two english words put together then refer to it by two english words put together, this has the same problem as Crusader. There is no Guardian Temple. We are not set to task by any deity. Real life Templars and Crusaders, to some, were terrible people who killed millions in the name of religion, and so saying its based in reality is not a plus for me.
Why does Seeker firt as a proper name and Paragon does not?
- Because Paragon is just a made up name like Lightbow, just with the difference, that this time its actually an existign English Word just simply turned into the meaning of beign a profession, when in fact it is not, a Seeker compared to that can bee seen as someone, who strives for justice and punishes those that do commit crimes, thus it actually does fit into the Theme, Style and Gameplay of the zealous Guardian.
Its a much better fitting name for a profession, than even Arbiter, because Seeker just stands out more for beign Judges, that follow and do everything possible to bring justice relentlessly to Tyria
Seeker is just too generic. Everyone in Tyria is seeking something. and end to the dragons, a really good use for blood stone dust, a precursor. Anyone and everyone who adventures seeks something, and is thus a seeker. (note: This argument can also be applied to Guardian, Warrior, Ranger, etc)
Why does Justiciar fit as a proper name and Guardian Angel does not?
- See Seeker, Justiciar would be just a fittign alternative name for Seeker, just that Justiciar would have that kind of “fanatism” more behind it, for one, who fanatically seeks for justice, like being too zealous about beign tyrias police. Guardian Angel compared to that just sounds again totally made up and cheesy, like being made up from a small child that can’t think of anything more creative, because childs just priorize only in regard of names, if it sounds “cool enough” for them to like it, not if it actually is a proper name, cause, they simply don’t care about that, as long that name just sounds “cool”. Justiciar again just sounds compared to Seeker like being more sophisticated. If you take that fanatism aside, you coudl think of them also basically as like a kind of “Elite” among Seekers, like a higher rank .
Im going to stop my discussion here, because the bold part hits the nail on the head. You are admiting that you think that its wrong for people to prioritize the cool sounding names over other ones. The ES plays fine. It looks great in the Ready up. Now we are here just arguing because… because… we all just want a cool name. We are prioritizing a cool sounding name over everything else. Lets just call it Elite Spec. 1.
If you change how traps execute, your essentialy making them not traps. Which is not so much altering the mechanics, but changing what they are as a whole.
Since activating a trap before anyone is inside the radius would give it away, and not trap anyone. I just cant see the point of having an activation button.
This is all just opinion. Just because you don’t like the name of something doenst make it bad. I like the name Dragonhunter. Do I have the same right to want them to keep it?
Chronomancer literally means a Mancer of Chrono, a Practicer of Time. A Time Controller. I just, im really agast at how there’s so much outrage against the timplicity of Dragonhunter when Chronomancer was the same thing. Is it just because its Latin? Dracovenotar sounds wierder to me.
“mancer” is typical suffix for different types of magic practitioners. Like necromancer, pyromancer, etc.
Chronomancer feels like a “proper” name as a result. Where as using a two word descriptor like “dragon hunter” sounds a little uninspired.
It’s honestly not a big deal, I just think they could have found something more appropriate and better sounding.
Like if necromancers get shouts and are called “Banshee”, that would be cool. Thematically appropriate and speaks to what they do/what skills they got. But if they were called “Voice commanders”, no matter how appropriate of a descriptor it is, it doesn’t sound like a good spec name.Imagine if warriors were called “Weapon Fighters”, engineers were called “Gadget Users”, mesmers were called “Illusion mages”, etc.
They all work as names, it’s just not a very appealing naming convention to follow.
All of this is just a language problem. We just happen to be on the lesser side this time in English. Like to me, an English speaker, the word Hunter sounds lame. But the word Jager sounds AWESOME. Its got a soft j (and an umlaut if i could remember the code for it) But to a German speaker, Jager might sound pedestrian, and they might prefer Hunter for the exotic englishyness.
Same reason people get tattoos in Asian languages. Get truth written on your arm and its lame. Get truth written in Kanji and you think its cool.
If you like this generic kitten name you should go apply to work for ANET. I’m sure you’d fare well.
Because zealot, paragon, justicar, etc. aren’t generic and are totally original names for a holy warrior?
at least those names make more sense to suit the power than ’’dragonhunter’’ like wtf his powers are focused on wielding the light not dragons, it’s stupid and makes no sense
I hunt Caribou. As far as I know I don’t use the power of the Caribou to hunt them. I use a rifle and a bow sometimes.(sometimes traps too, but not like, the bad bait kinds or the ones that hurt them) Two things not known among the Caribou. This argument is invalid
I’m pretty excited for this actually. All of you saying it sucks are jumping to conclusions way too early. Wait until tomorrow so we can see what it can actually do and then judge it. For all we know Dragonhunter traps could be instant cast from range and create wards or CC effects when triggered. Give it a chance.
They would be amazing. Imagine laying down not one big trap, but maybe a bunch of little ones. Like a mine field filled with mini symbols of wrath.
I assume between the traps and bow they want to keep the ‘Righteous Hunter’ theme, but there is already a real world term which fits that perfectly.
Witch Hunter
Why does it have to be specific to dragons? Make them an all around hunter of evil, demons, all things that bump in the night and scratch at the door.
I dislike the fact that this means Witches = Evil
Also Witch Hunts are notoriously known for being bad, bad things. Like, your hunting for something that inst there with extreme prejudice
I think most will agree with me that the name Dragonhunter kind of sucks. Let’s throw some ideas for a better name at ANet and hope they’ll consider changing it.
I think most of the vocal minority would agree. The majority of people couldn’t care less. I for one love it
The honourable and virtuous Guardian are resorting to traps? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.
Honor and Virtue are for your allies. Show your enemies none of the kindness you show your friends. Burn them with righteous flames.
Yeah it is too early to say how this specialization will play out… It has interesting concepts/mechanics, we will have to wait for the livestream…
The one thing I’m a bit skeptical of…is the name. I mean Dragonhunter? They could’ve named it Warden or something. Sounds so cliché…
Why do people keep talking about the name being cliche?
How is Warrior, Ranger and Engineer any less cliche?
Dragonhunter. We have traps, and a bow, and we’re hunting elder dragons.
Rather then a name, it’s more like description. It just feels uninspired.
Rather then a two-word descriptor, I would have expected a name or term that encompasses what they do/are. Warden was a good one. Or arenanet could have done their research and found a name related to some light-worshiping tribe of hunter gathers. Something, anything other then “I hunt dragons, therefore dragonhunter”.Things like warrior or ranger are staples of RPGs, so their fine. They also conform to the naming convention I just mentioned.
Never let it be said that Arena Net doesn’t listen.
Remember when you guys said you wanted a condition spec for guardian that used more than just burning.
Your welcome, you got it.
And I for one thank them. I’m gonna burn the world down. Gotta get started on my Ascended Condition Damage set now
I play Thief Guardian and Ranger. So Thanks Anet. I can be pretty much all of them at once now!
It is a hunter.
It is a hunter of Dragon
It is armed with a long bow, traps and increased mobility. Not to mention a few other things we wont find out about untill tomorrow/HoT release
I will turn it around. How does it not fit the HoT expansion?
An interesting thought from Reddit “This makes sense if the theory of Braham picking up Eirs longbow, being the first Dragon Hunter, following his Ranger of a mothers footsteps. In a way, it brings Rangers and Guardians closer together.”
So if that is true, then longbow + traps makes sense. And the name would be because Braham is now focused on taking out Mordremoth and the other dragons.
From a story stand point, that is quite cool, but still a bit of a duffer when it comes to the specialisation name.
Im just thinking outloud here, feel free to jump in:
Kas is a Mesmer, Human. Logan is a Human Guardian (right hes a guardian?) Mesmer gets a Shield, a heretofore guardian weapon
Brahm is a guardian, his mother Eir a ranger. Guardians get a heretofor Ranger weapon.
Majory is a Necromancer. Her sister was a Warrior. Necromancer get the warrior weapon par excelance’
Can anyone do this for Rox or Taimi?
While were at it lets get them to change Chronomancer, as it doenst fit my personal style of Mesmer play. its too tech sounding.
Mate, the spec is literally what it’s named: a Chronomancer. Just play mesmer if it ’doesn’t fit your personal style’. Also, please don’t start the arguments we are having over in the mesmer forums in the guardian forums about mesmer being ‘downgraded’ without its spec trait tree (which is completely false).
Sorry for this, a load of things rushed through my head when I read this comment.
That was the point. People who dislike it need to ask themselves.“Do I dislike the name or is it a bad name for the intended function of the class in the expansion?”
With the long bow the guardian is speced out to hunt dragons. The Chronomancer uses time. if the Guadian was called, I dont know, something angelic like an Archangel, it woulnd fit because there is no heaven, or angels in the game, and were not going to teach the dragons about our lord and savior Raven.
The name fits the function. If I dont like it doenst matter. At the end of the day we are still just Guardians.
Personally I highly dislike the name. It is very generic and unoriginal in my opinion. Plus the theme seems to be shoehorned in. Technically aren’t we all Dragon Hunters? I killed a dragon and multiple dragon minions as a Necromancer and I’m now hunting Mordremoth, doesn’t that make me a Dragon Hunter?
In all, the light theme and the wings (which aren’t dragon wings) as well as the theme just don’t seem to fit well. I don’t know though, we’ll see if it grows on me.
You’ve slain dragons. I bet you even have a drake Slayer achievement.
Everyone in Tyria is fighting against some sort of dragon. Or maybe, to be more acurate fighting against the symptoms brought on by some sort of dragon. The Norn kill the Svanir, the Charr the Branded. Everyone would say yes if you asked them “Would you like to help those effected by Mordermoth?”
But only guardians responded by making a vow that they would personaly shoot a flaming arrow down its throat and watch as it exploded into a million flaming plant chunks, setting the whole of Maguuma ablaze in the purifying blue white fires of justice so that the scourge would forever be wiped from the face of Tyria
… then again. I guess fighting the Shatter’s toe is kinda the same thing. N’est-ce pas?
