good post, one worth of getting an semi afker log back in for a reply.
so I agree with you sir, for the most part, the current mesmer state is a shadow of its former glory, the “glory” in this case means the play styles and builds that was once viable but no longer in use due to the current state of games, I believe game needs evolution, this is what keeps people playing. but how mesmer gets into the current state, through nerfs and all these mutations caused by the overall power creeps.
this is sad.
it feels like the current mesmer is somewhat similar to Frankenstein, it went alive but just not through the normal means, and , and I just feels like I am leftovers.
ya, I agree with all these “they close a window but leaves a door open for you” sort of philosophy.
BTW, if we ignore all other things, the current meta mesmer is really the kind of mesmer that fits the class description for the first time, instead of obliterates enemy with a great sword that shoots beam, we now use confusion, torment, wields staff , with sword and shield for style. for the first time you look like caster that destroy you opponent with clones that was not rolled out but disappear and reappear which gives a sense of what is real and not….. you starts to mesmerizing people…for real…

nerf Mtd stacks is a mistake.
like someone reasoned before, this is not like there is no counter to the torment stacks. people have tons of condi cleanse. and we exchange our sustain for burst damage, and this is not only true for the power spec but also the case for condi shatter spec as well.
DEV SHOULD NERF THE DURATION BUT NOT STACKS.
a full shatter, 8 stacks is very rare, most of time we get 6 stacks.
in a power shatter build, you get instant damage that happens with no counter play once landed. but condi shatter spec do not get their damage at the point of shatter, rather they have to wait until the damage happen, and there is time for counter play, this already put them at a disadvantage.

as one of the more rare boons, I don’t really much problem with it. since all boons will be randomly converted, that means it has it’s fair share of chance to be converted first.
I say we stop the power creep by make less exceptions from now on.
what you are asking for is potentially dangerous once allowed. everybody will start to do the same, and that leads to a whole new degree of complexity to a game which already too complicated for any new player.

maybe I can bring something up here. I too play on chinese sever. the point is not how mad the matching making are, I know with central tendency been the same everywhere, anet probably see the same distribution everywhere.
what I am really concerned is how much attention is chinese sever getting from you guys.
here in us, developer constantly keep an eye on the forum, and adjustment were made whenever needed or reported.
if there was an adjustment , say it might affect match making, do Chinese server get the same tweak? if not then, do people on chinese server have to wait until next patch?
I know chinese server are kind of outsourced… anet are not liable as long as there are no major material defect.
but an official announcement from time to time or quarterly report that shows you guys have at least gathered data, feedback from chinese server will make all the difference.

THe OP’s experience is what every newcomer to this game faces, and it’s an inherent weakness of the Glicko-2 system. Because the system assigns unrated players a high Ratings Deviation, it essentially assumes that a brand new player could be terrible but could also be awesome. They’re therefore just as likely to be assigned a good or a bad opponent. Glicko-2 essentially assumes that, if you have 0 matches, you’re somewhere in the middle of the skill spectrum, and it moves you up or down as you play.

In principle that’s fine if your aim is an accurate MMR, but not if you want people to have fun: at this point in the game’s lifespan, even the people in the middle of the skill spectrum will be pretty decent and chew up and spit out beginners! So everyone just starting out is guaranteed to lose their first 10-20 games in a row!

It’s a really horrible flaw which drives a lot of new players away from spvp, because of the impression that it’s wildly unfair and extremely hardcore. Even skilled players from WvW have an absolutely terrible time when they move to spvp because they’re just as likely to be matched against teams so high-rated they create a space-time anomaly on the leaderboards when they log in as against a team of one-flippered manatees randomly mashing the keyboards with their snouts. You can’t expect people to endure through 20-30 absolutely terrible matchups while their Glicko-2 rating stabilises!

Things worked OK in the starting few months of the game, when we were all more or less on the same level, but now, where there’s people who’ve been playing for 2 years and can kill you before you even spot them, it’s really unfair to drop beginners right in the middle of this!

The only solution to this is if MMR IS NOT USED AS A MATCHMAKING VARIABLE until a player has accrued a certain number of matches (say 30), so MMR actually means something. They should arbitrarily be assigned a made-up lowest-possible MMR, so they’re guaranteed to be matched up with other beginners. Keep calculating MMR in the background, just don’t use it for matchmaking: let players accrue enough matches so their MMR is meaningful before it’s used.

If you’re not willing to implement this, the only other way to make sure people don’t quit pvp after 10 games is to force them to only do hotjoins until rank 10 or 20 or so, and only then be allowed into unranked. Then gate ranked behind an even higher rank requirement.

I’ve talked to a lot of beginners who get dropped into a match full of top-1000 people for their very first game, it happens every single time there’s a free trial. Those people just NEVER come back! Justin, there’s a big influx of new players here now because of the sale, so if you can knock up something along the lines I suggested before a big wave of them start getting bored of pve and start queueing up for matches, you can actually singlehandedly grow the active pvp population significantly!

^^this one?I am a two year player, and god I am better than 90% of the population in spvp. I do not enjoy killing newbies, for the same reason if one was assigned to my team. Karma keeps coming back …you know.
before there was people suggesting about a dead set rank 20 requirement until you can step into Q system.
I am still a big enthusiastic of such ideas. I know Anet does not feel like telling people they can not play because they are new. at least with the new mmr system. please make a rule in the back ground, so newbie was not even in the same pool as the rest of the more exped crowed

You queued as a warrior, we found a match for a warrior, using your warrior MMR. It wouldn’t be fair to others if we let bypass matchmaking rules, and it opens the door for exploits.

If the full loss for small disconnects becomes an issue, feel free to bring it up again and we can talk about less severe deterrents. As John mentioned, this is an experiment and we’ll be looking at the data and community reaction.

This is extremely important. There absolutely NEEDS to be a timer regarding small disconnects. It happens quite often that someone will d/c or whose game will bug and it is PRIMORDIAL that they are able to come back into the game. There needs to be a 2-3 minute timer before dishonor affects them. This is not “we’ll take a look into it”, this is extremely important and something that needs to be addressed right away.

Please, do not let this go through as it is. The changes you are bringing are absolutely awesome and I for one am extremely excited about them and quite looking forward to playing under these new rules. However this issue could get extremely frustrating, VERY fast, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see people quit over this.

Once again, I cannot stress how important it is to fix this issue as soon as possible. Keep the no profession swap rule, but give players a chance to recover from a short disconnect. 2-3 minute timer is plenty of time to restart one’s computer and it is still possible to recover from that and push for a win. I’ve had it happen more times than I can remember.

ya, Dev need to be aware that if you leave no grace period between these small uncontrollable d/c people will go nuts. what about ddos on server? when huge lag happens all across the server. you meant to see the whole spvp shut down in the event like that?

The fact that going out to the login screen results in dishonor and a full-loss, is there any way for the game to tell if there was a server DC or game crash? Are crashes/DC’s handled the same way as an intentional logout? This is especially relevant with how volatile the servers have been in recent months kicking people out of games and whatnot.

I know it is hard to maintain server on this scale, and ddos happen from time to time.I also have this feeling that anet do not have a mechanics to check for real DC or intentional log out yet. it is really impossible to tell. you need to factor in uncontrollable factor.when the ranking become really important.

Do not even think about gem reward, it go against the business model anet has.
Gold is not the best choice, it causes inflation, and in the end everybody is worse off.
so , how about milestone reward like achievement. at different stage of your ladder career offer something like precursor , at end of the season offer a reward based on ranking.

you will have a solution to almost every encounters, in team or solo q.

of all 5 mentioned, except for theif or mesmer, it wont hurt the team if you stack more than any of the 4 class.

is bunker guard a must have? I hate to say this ,but the role of the bunker guard in a team or solo q is quite similar to turret engi atm. they represent two extreme end of bunker in a team or soloq setting. bunker guard as extremely team support with no damage an cc, v.s Turret engi which offers constant high damage out put & CC.

there is a lot of criticism going on for turret engi, but we can not deny its efficiency under most circumstance , you wont want to be in that circle if u saw a thumper turret in the mid and rocket turret in the corner.

if you have team consist of at least 3 of the top 4 class mentioned you are probably fine.

only rule is light/medium armor zerker can not be more than 40% of the total team population
compare to what must have, I would argue that a “no more than X% of certain armor,amulet class” is a better way of saying it

please spare us from all the esports non sense, so dev do not came up with the wrong kitten to deliver for the next 6 month, that is before they put previously delivered, not- so-right kitten back into the cage.
guess either way we stuck with some kitten for 6 month and another 6 month in the foreseeable future. I just realized it is kitten hell on earth for player who tends to only pvp already.
so ya, let me rephrase it, plz do not even mention esports at this stage of the game and let dev roll out the plan/kitten they have set up from the beginning of the year.
so far I prefer a working season/ladder system ,than having a million viewer where clearly 99% of the population dont understand why that guy dropped in 0.5 sec

I totally understand that custom arena can be used for whatever purpose the owner intended it for, but just as such, the rule set by the owner are subject to a broad set of conduct and regulation which the anet enforce on the general pvp populations.
if the owner is not there to enforce his/her rule on the server, then the server has been reverted back to a general server that is governed by the rule/custom of the pvp community in the broadest sense.

Yes, your shatters are just as strong as steal. My point is.. yes u get extremely strong skills if u heavily trait into the corresponding trait lines.

shatter is not as strong, 1st it’s so easy to dodge unlike steal, even at melee range is so easy to dodge, no body would ever use it at long range, shatter is melee ranged, if you can’t see clones walking slowly to you then it’s really L2P, 2nd it’s 4 buttons not one. 3rd of all, mesmer not my main, i just play it like i play thief, mesmer, warrior, engi, necro, cuz you know, learn about other classes and counter plays make you better, in fact i have more time on my thief then most of the classes.

OT: i was playing non trickery thieves 4 signet 1 shot trolol build, and these trickery thieves just abuse steal so much, getting carried by it, and act like they are good. so sad, it’s like people playing PU and think they are good. unreal. for the ones i’ve countered today, without trickery steal hit they can’t even win, even tho i’m freaking 4 signets. not to mention that i’m freaking human and they are asuras ( gg standard enemy models gets undone after stealth.)

Anything that is traited heavily, as a main focus in a build, will be powerful.

You are a mesmer. I am sorry to tell you, thieves will counter you. Wether they are in the trickery line or SA line. While on the same coin, guardians can counter thieves.

This game does have things that counter other things. Now if your intention is to make shatter mes godlike ( like they were when the might shatter was bugged) Then be my guest.

your are blurring the issue, my good sir, what you are saying here is that if you trait something, it has to be that way even it is unbalanced.
for the sake of discussion I would again remind everyone there is a fine line between, enhanced and overpowered, and the case for something to be unbalanced and overpowered will tends to happen when they are enhanced drastically.
steal is exactly the case.
when an average class invest 30 points in a tree, they get a enhanced tool kit, everything within that tool kit get a little more awesome than before, it is fine.
in case of trickery, the only thing that gets enhanced is steal, the line benefit reduce recharge on steal, the thing that people are forced to pick promote one particular skill among everything in the theif’s tool kit, the steal. something you rarely see in other classes.
to summarize, what I have listed above has given enough foundation as to where an overpowered and unbalanced skill to be born out of all the heavy enhancement it has gone through with two additional built-in factors.
1. instant cast from range.
2.lack of telegraph and proper indications/hint.

auto balance and team swapping is not the problem, the problem is, players like your good self (TheBlackLeech) very much prefers to stay on the team of 5 to steam roll the players in the team of 4.

you just admitted it yourself in your first post.

the correct method to fix this problem is to make it that the teams are even always, not 5 vs 4
4 vs 3
3 vs 2
2 vs 1

but
5 vs 5
4 vs 4
3 vs 3
2 vs 2
1 vs 1

So i will go straight to the point, address one of the excuses Anet seems to use a lot.

I agree, I made this post cause a terrific 4v5 I just had, first match this evening, like any other days.
I have to agree, this is true, but hell,Anet, you are the game master of this game, it is your responsibilities to guide and facilitate the flow of the game.
that excuse is surely true, and I fully understand, what I am not happy with, is there is not enough effort Anet should be putting into the game to stop this from happening.
This example may not be proper, but do we stop making laws because people will still break the law regardless?
Anet need to double or trouble the stake in playing the arena game mode, I do not mean you need to increase the reward, I know you guys has made great progress compare to what we have this time last year, and I am grateful, but reward is just not equal to stake.
You guys already give punishment for leaving, this is targeted at people who purposely leaving so they can screw everybody else, it is great, but not enough, this rule failed to address the issue for people who quit out of rage and who is still queueing despite the knowledge that they have a bad connection today.
both what I mentioned above also cause the rest of the 4 people to be deprived of their rights to fun and fair match.
Banning people on count of three is just not a good idea, because it give people a 2 time free " do whatever you please" ticket. it does not scare rage quitter if not actually encouraging people to act in such a immature and naive way.
there needs to be a punishment that punish DC and rage quit, a consideration.
so basically if there was a rating system that everybody can see, or a system that links accomplishment of arena matches to some sort of periodic reward.

pvp wise? if ip as baseline, we can invest 6 into chaos for interrupt, or pu, even the new trait, we will have more toughness,longer might duration, root on interrupt at no cost of damage will be huge.
might can comes from else where like battle sigil and bountiful interruption.
Hell, if ip baseline, u will see another class with full capitalization of celestial.
a pre-req for using cele capability is might stack and boon duration, u see it with engi and ele both invest in at least 4 points in the respective boon duration trees.
if there is anything against the point, is that the game does not need another class fully usage with cele amulet.
mechanic wise, it make total sense that IP should be baseline.
do u acutally see people playing shatter in pve?
the lack of IP is one point that refrains everyone from using it, our main class mechenic

actually i get 3 thieves teams all the time and we end up holding mid and home most of the matches O.o

true, but this is more than a game, sponsors need event for publicity, pvp managers needs activities to justify their meaning of existence is such a small company, and the only thing you can do to raise awareness for pvp without overload the production capacity in anet is simply by starting a event, at least there will be something to put up in the blog post, looks good in the marketing.
the importance is that something has been done, it is not a scientific procedure where you will measure the result to pre-set standard to check for failure. if there has been one which I highly doubt it’s existence, it is probably never publicized internal figures.

anet probably see balance in a much different way then we do, they do not really care about 1v1, cuz there suppose to be counter play between builds, if a build has no counter they call it alpha predator and Nerf it.
passive play style is probably ok as long as they can be properly countered by other builds, their damage largely depends on people attack them or stay in a small area to work. that is as long as they do not outshine active play style in a team setting, anet do not give a kitten about people getting stomped in HJ and soloq.
you have to blame Anet for making the combat system so fast paced which makes the learning of active play style a pain in the A for any beginner , how can you learn if you play a zerker spec that die in 2 sec if u paniced, for a sec? not to mention the combat log is notorious, they simply flood you with every ticks of condition damage. and the lack of time line that log entries by 0.01 sec adds more confusion to that, if the average casting time of each skill is from 0.25 to 0.75 sec, why the combat log showing entries by whole seconds?
Does Anet know this? ya they do, but since they are “small and efficient” company with a “tight schedule” they just don’t have the “time”
that’s why passive play style is an necessary evil.

Personally, I think that 4v5 would naturally be fixed if Anet did the right things to increase population level (new gamemodes, no skyhammer in SoloQ, better LBs etc etc)

nay we had to admit the population base is decreasing, the active playing population at least, anet has their own figures but like all authority figures they are not that accurately measured at best, to put it nicely. skyhammer is not even the basic problem, game modes neither, it is imbeded deeply into the combat system itself.
think about this, how long does it take to kill someone in this game’s pvp mode?
anyone standing still for more than 3 sec is a half dead guy, things happens just way too fast, and it has been the main issue which dev is trying to address for a long time.
they nerfed power build, they buffed condi hope it would slow down the pace, and we end up with a dumb fire epidemic for a good 6 month, they nerfed dumb fire, we see another 6 months of pistol whip/evade spam sd theif, and not to mention the bunker meta they semi intentionally created and x-ed out by themself in this patch.
non of them worked cuz even full bunkers like 2 solider hambow war+2staff cleric ele+X. kills things way faster than they should be.
most pve player quits before they had the interest to figure out what killed them.
a game measures its decision making intervals by 0.5 sec is way too unfriendly too most people in a pvp setting.
Oh by the way, my friend describe chinsese server been dead compared to its launch, bot roaming the pvp ques like zombie horde. good job

Hooray for kneejerk balance rages on patch day!

Seriously though…it’s a bit early to start the rage.

No it’s not. Spend an hour in sPvP and you can clearly see how blatantly overpowered and game-breaking ranger longbow and greatsword are.

My friend and I played for a few hours last night. It feels like a third person shooter with all the rangers. If you can’t avoid the Rapid Fire for whatever reason (like if their pet CC’ed you), you’re dead. It’s not some well-executed skill chain; it’s one button at 1200 range. If you aren’t dead from Rapid Fire, it’s okay, they’ll just auto-attack a couple times and finish you off. Or better yet, if you’re anywhere near melee, you’ll be hit with Maul for thousands of damage.

The only saving grace is that most rangers are people who never played the profession before and have no clue what to do when you avoid Rapid Fire and attack back.

Try to defend it; you can’t. Rapid Fire is more damage than 100blades ever was, in less time, at 1200 range. Sure, skilled players can avoid it 1v1, but the average player is going to be completely frustrated by it. And even skilled players will fall victim to it in group fights.

and often times people are correct. If you’ve played for a while, you’ll remember thieves at launch, D/D ele, spirit ranger, mm necro, hambow, decap engi, and turret engi all having issues at some point. The end result? All those got nerfed at some point (except turret engi which keeps getting buffed)

And sometimes they didn’t! Remember when they said that the S/D nerf would kill S/D (happened at least twice)? Remember when people said that Power Block would make mesmers OP? Remember when people said that Diamond Skin would make eles invincible?

I can’t comment on S/D now, nor will I, but I’m referring to when people said it was “dead” last patch within the first week…and then ended up being the meta again with people like Sizer running it successfully in high end tournaments.

People also said the same thing when they took the stun break off of Inf Strike (the patch before that if I remember correctly), but it continued to be the meta build.

with all this ranger thing going on I kind of miss the old s/d, even I main a mesmer.

I share you feeling on this topic, I too have endure a lot of matches where u know you team is incompetent from the beginning of the match and when u see they flash out that shiny legendary you just can not stop but sigh," god kitten pve hero."
I personally do believe they got every right to play this mode of game(PVP), but even they might not understand that pvp of this game is quite deep in term of depth and their incompetence might just ruin 4 other people’s game.
I blame Anet for allowing people to join arena with out prerequisite Experiences
I dont think lecture these people about how to play is the right step, first, they wont listen, second, there are just too many of them. the deeper problem and its solution has been brought up quite some time.
ALL WE NEED IS A REAL LADDER SYSTEM.
so people can be bracketed and we will all live happily ever after.

solution: get 5 eles and burning speed into their turret spam.

what happens? all the turrets die/explode.
and the power necro? bring some reflect and watch his 1111111 lich spam kill himself. :P

ya and we will end up with 5 dead ele all knocked off points, cuz each turret explode for 1300+base damage ,and they usually have 3 down. dont think burning speed is going to evade that, it explode afterward and u will eat the damage.

There is something missing, something dev does not consider when they decided to bring more people into pvp through this feature pack. The numbers are surely growing, every few match when u stomp on some people that is clearly below par , you know they are the new comer, it’s good , it’s a long shot. but how about the old pvper? their game experience, or the new pvper’s game experience when they randomly run into a lvl80?
Do you know how steep is the learning curve of gw2 pvp? how long does it take for a new pvper,who play 4 to 8 hours a week to learn to be competitive in pvp?
I almost feels like you guys are merely carrying out your bosses order in attempt to fix something that will finally be reflected in some 1 line data brief that ends up on his or her desktop some Monday Morning. and you care less about how the gamer actually feels in the process, it is virtually another problem for another day and probably is going to sort it out on it self.
This attempt of bringing more people into pvp is definitely a success, thanks to that my game experience of fighting a lobe sided battle in team Q has increased significantly, and the Q time is also shorter, combined with the new reward track system, I just feel like I am farming champion bags in pvp. I would like to congrates anet for this perfect unification of both side of the game.

loot bags are great, not been sarcastic , I appreciate that change, but srsly, I don’t play pvp for loot bags, therefore I would rather wait 30 for a even match than an instant Q and stomp some newbie and their unlucky team mate. what kind of core game experience do you want to deliver in this game?

I know you can not appease everyone, but it is a total slap in the face when you find out that your fun has been sacrificed by this change for sake of someone else’s fun(people play for loot bag as incentive) because you are minority.

It is totally irresponsible to everyone who plays pvp in this game,if you do not implant some kind of league system along with the anticipated boom in pvp population.
you think the process will be short? but I tell you be4 the boost to rank points and everything else, it takes at least couple hundred of games for someone just to know a profession , play it competently and couple hundred more for an average new pvper to know how to play as a team.

all damage got buffed, not just AI, unless Anet has a rule that mesmer should be alienated from an overall damage buff, otherwise the illusion buff are just on par with the overall damage that everybody gets, if an Mesmer has that much damage the chances are that they are as squashy as you, and you can do the same to the mesmer if the player is not actively dodging.

mechanic wise, all else been considered and assume equal skill.
you Never win against a decap engi, it’s the said fact, unless you decided to be always prepared to fight one and get on those special builds at any moment.
even that will net decap engi enough time to at least decap you once, if you don’t know in advance that there is a decap engi.
the talk about bring more than 1 person to kill decap engi are as bad, since that’s exactly what decap engi wants you to do, remember it only take 5 sec to decap , but 13 sec to recap, a smart decap knows when to retreat and get back.
so, what’s the only sound and viable option for counter play a decap?
like someone else said be4, go take far and mid and play 4v5 on the rest of the map.
Decap engi is an IQ check basically as long as you dont get irritated and set on the wrong course of attempting to kill one

We have to admit that practice does makes perfection, at least better performance.
you can only earn ranks by strictly playing pvp so rank is a fair representation of time investment. So on average, people with more ranks tends to have better skill. its hard statistic facts. and since it is statistics, its all chances of having a good player with ranks are higher than those with lower ranks.
If you don’t believe in this then you are biased
Ranks as a skill measure may be terrible, but as a team reliability measure is quite trust worthy.

what is your logic behind this new reward system? I know you are still in the progress of revamp pvp reward system, but I have waited long enough and I just want to talk about what I have on hand and what I get to stuck with for the next couple months given the historical efficiency of you guys at designing pvp.
why the rank reward become flat after rank 30? Do I have to remind you how hard it is, even after the patch to rank once you go pass R40? I am currently at 59, and it takes 150,000 to rank up, or translate into a more visual terms ,100 wins in Tpvp. in reality people have to time that by 1.5 since nobody wins all the time.
Do you value the effort for someone who put so much time into this? or is a pvper’s effort not worth noting by your books?
I am angry not because you guys are slow, I can wait as long as the result is good, but this time I see only Utilitarianism at work.
I see you guys eager to get new player into pvp there goes the patch, new player get a lot of reward since its easy to rank up at least for the first 20 ranks or so.but what of the old and loyal players who are the backbones of the pvp communities? Do we get retroactive rewards for the rank we have earned? no. nothing. old pvper just seems to not be part of your plan.
It is really sad, I can’t help but think that you doing this only so the next reported pvp player base will go up as intended.

Say I level from 60 to 61 and getting like 1-5 random Tier 5 PVE carafting material will be a real bummer like a 30 to 31
