It’s kind of like this…
They give you a delicious looking steak, let you smell it, maybe even have a bite.
Then some kitten at the table next to you starts screaming that it’s not fair that you get a steak and they don’t, even though they ordered ribs, so anet takes the steak and throws it in the trash. When you try and ask why your steak got thrown in the trash they ignore you.
You end up getting kittened and demanding a new steak and when you cause a big enough scene they realize they need to do something to avoid bad pr.At this point they will either give you a cheeseburger (that will likely be thrown away) or dig your steak out of the trash.
It’ll be dirty, it might be missing chunks where the rats got at it….. but hey, you got your steak back.
I nearly peed my pants from reading this lol. This was pretty awesome and I certainly needed this to get my day started
Hats off to you sir!
Give the man a pay raise. Certainly warranted
I thought I was one of the handful of people who actually miss capricorn moreso than what Skyhammer has brought
Guards are still too weak IMHO
Even if a defender shows up – at the cost of your life you can destroy them in seconds and there is no way to replace/buff them.
So far this is the only thing I don’t like in Stronghold.
I agree with this assessment. The guards are a bit too weak. It shouldn’t be a situation where I or anyone else can easily wipe them within seconds.
Granted, I know that Anet want’s to find a healthy balance where the game isn’t prolonged due to players trying to whittle down the guards.
I know this isn’t the feedback thread, but this game mode is very enjoyable. It’s engaging and as long as you face a competitive opponent, then the match gets exciting.
I hope Anet develops more game modes like this.
You guys have been awesome. This is a great thread and has been very informative. I’ve only been using condi build which has been supreme. But I’d like to add variety with other builds.
Surprised they didn’t use this image to get some male mesmer action! http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/1/12/Mesmer_01_concept_art.jpg
yes please. That looks incredible and would have been a most welcomed addition
Tell me people aren’t surprised that Mesmer was the class to attract all the Hipsters?
“Oh my class and build? It’s so underground … you probably haven’t heard of it.”
… I tease :P
……. mostly.
I’m one of those you should hate. Played Mesmer and Ranger at the start but wife took Mesmer so I just stuck with ranger. She eventually gave up on mesmer so I decided to go back to it finally, just before all the changes hit. I can tell a remarkable difference though I can’t decide WHICH VIABLE SPEC TO PLAY!!
It’s an embarrassment of riches.
hehe good post. I sort of think that may actually be true. The mesmer has been the underdog or outcast for some time and that’s what brought some “charm” to it.
And yea it was the hipster profession lol
Even though I don’t play mesmer and got no idea what those changes to you guys mean, I believe you guys.
the mesmer thread is overflowing with joy.
I’m happy for you mesmers. no longer going to get whipped by thieves. All I can say is… with the way mesmers have had to work harder to get less for so long…. Now everyone will think mesmers are God.
This is precisely what i’m afraid of. There will be a ton of salty tears from players of other professions
Honestly, it took 2 years to rebalance this game and all youre doing is destroying all the balance you had over this time
Just think logicly for a second, this won’t benefit anyone
I am glad this is happening, the classes I play the most are not part of the meta, so I am glad there is a chance to “reset” and let see how things play out.
The people that are crying because their mains are part of the meta, that’s just too bad.
Really? What do you play? My impression from the changes is that they reinforce the meta (exception: mesmer).
Are you saying that mesmers either weren’t part of the meta at all or are you saying that mesmers won’t be part of the meta? Because neither is true. They definitely weren’t as common as thieves, but they were still played way more than ranger or necro. At least on EU.
My comment was pointing out that most classes currently in the meta got buffed (Ele, Engi, Guard, Thief), and those that aren’t in the meta got nerfed (notably necro); I haven’t read up on the ranger/warrior changes yet. The exception to this is the mesmer, which was not meta and got a buff.
What are you smoking? Mesmers got the most buffs of all.
Engi ele thief got buffs. People overrate the mesmer changes by alot. Alot. Mesmer isnt even very good ATM and is used for portal and moa. The main reason mesmer can spike is because a thief stealths them. All in all, thief will hardcounter just as hard and ele and engi and thief got thr biggest buffs
Are you seriously telling me mesers didn’t get buffed? They got buffed the most along with engis.
The buffs to ele were medicore, I seriously don’t know what people are talking about. Either they do not understand the class and realize many buffs were to just replace nerfed things or the impossibility of taking some new traits.
Just stop with your obvious Mesmer slandering. The mesmer did not get “the most buffs” and it was/is not in a good position
I’m not trying to attack you, but you’re totally off base with your comments about the Mesmer. Unless you can provide substantial evidence that proves your point.
The issue is the thief’s mobility and escape ability in relation to its damage potential.
Pretty much.
There’s nothing else that can be said. The thief isn’t overpowered only if an individual is including their mobility and escape potential throughout a battle.
It’s trickier to find a balance for the thief than players think
Would like to give my condolences. That is a devastating story and it’s unimaginable what his family is going through right now.
I think Anet may do something as they are naturally caring developers.
I enjoyed it, and nice fight with the warrior, the end of that fight was hilarious.
Warriors can be absolute pest with how long they can endure and withstand both physical and condi attacks. Looks like eventually you found that you had to constantly apply pressure the Warrior.
Pokémancer
MH weapon: PokéballElite skill: Forces your newly captured foes to fight for you.
lol I had to log in, just for this post. I think i’d roll with the Pokémancer, so yes, Aniltiger, I choose you!
Whut?
I understood that u was on shatter build if u mean that.…I too can kill 4 uplvls.
Two uplevels, both warriors, a regular engi, a regular guardian.
Two uplevels = 2 upscales, regular engi, a regular guardian = 2 noobs or wvw zerg runners. What I had read wrong? You just can’t kill 2 decent duelists (good skill and build) in 1vs2 on shatterer most time. So suggest u go again to do some pvp at 1×1 servers to see real state of matter.
You’re still failing to see my point. 4 players on auto attack, whether 2 of them come from up levels or not is more than enough pressure to kill a SINGLE (not to mention glass) player.
This is only true if the players are reasonably competent. You obviously fought incompetent people.
The arguments in this thread that Mesmers are weak are invalid and unfounded. I should stop reading this sub forum because it is not the Mesmer profession sub forum. In reality it’s a bunch of people who don’t know how to play Mesmer complaining about Mesmer. Have a good day.
No, your arguments are anecdotal and irrelevant. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
Amen, tell ’em Fay
If mes is so strong and so easy why is it not meta? Wouldn’t there be a higher population of the class in PvP, and replace a lot of other classes?
Exactly. This is the question that has yet to be answered.
There isn’t an abundance of Mesmers playing whether at the lowest of levels or at the top.
It’s not rocket science to figure out why that is
You can either shadowstep or just dodge like everyone else. Relying on stealth 100% to avoid attacks is a problem.
This
And every average to good thief understands this. Rapid fire is a channel attack. Channel attacks will continue to follow its target.
Mesmer’s scepter’s Confusing Images
Warrior’s Kill shot
Necro’s Ghastly Claw
All the above will continue attack a thief through stealth.
Honestly, from the current ‘meta’ builds, I’d say that only Mesmer, Thief and Necro take a certain amount of skill to not be a burden to your team. Any other class/build is pretty much straightforward/forgiving enough to make up for mistakes.
Turret Eng is probably the easiest carry build in GW2, we’ve ever had.
Agree nicely said. It comes down to which class is more of a burden to the team. Mesmer is not easy to command in a team setting. But if all you’re looking to do is a be a hot join hero and take on people 1v1 then it’ll work for you.
Thief actually isn’t that bad, so long as you have a competent team. Same as Necro.
A power Necro can be pretty brutal against the opposing team.
Obvious troll is a painfully obvious troll
Press one, two, and three and the phantasms do the rest?
Post a video to show such simple execution. I’d love to see your dominance.
This thread has been pretty informative and entertaining, even with the back and forth banter.
Ultimately I think it’s a wash. GS ranger is viable, yes, but the thing is that there are other Ranger builds better than that. And lets not even mention other professions who offer more than a GS ranger.
That’s not to say that GS ranger is useless, but it’s more of an indictment on the state of the GS ranger. It certainly could use improvement and/or retooling.
This was actually a pretty nice post, thanks for taking the time to write that up Daishi
I too would like to hear a response. I’m not one of those people who are coming after the devs with a torch and pitchfork. However it would be nice to hear about the direction that they are taking with the class.
I also understand that the devs may not necessarily want to bring up talking points as a lot of people will hold the devs to their words. Many things can change, even within a day, so nothing is ever definite.
This is my simple request (or plea) as I havn’t had a true urge to play this game in some time now. It was just a few days ago that I came back from a long hiatus from playing this game and after replaying the game for a few hours, I quickly realized the reasons for my departure. It saddens me as this is legitimately a good game, but it has been a bit underwhelming.
Love your videos Jebro, you’re a gentleman and an entertaining person to watch.
Arguably one of the best threads i’ve seen since the release of the game. Very nice stories in here and good people.
Wish I had a cool grandmother or grandfather to play this game with lol
The ongoing cry for Mesmer nerfs. No wonder so many have lost interests in this class because it’s constantly nerfed due to the 12 year olds not figuring out 1+1
If they would design the game to be less about the #1 slot I would agree it wouldn’t be as OP. But currently the game’s design revolves a lot around that to push out ‘pvp threat’, or damage, which the trait severly reduces.
But I completely agree that it would be cool if it could be a thing, if autos were less potent. Logically it should work like that.
This guy gets it
The game, as it stands now and has been since launch, is heavily dependent upon the slot 1 skill. This isn’t totally true for all the professions, but for the majority of them, it holds true.
Not sure why many of you can’t wrap your head around it and are only simple minded enough to instantly think something has to be “nerfed.”
No not bugged, its fixed.
You cannot tell me that Anet was pleased at how the kegs turned that path into a cakewalk.
And yes Waxpax is correct, the path is still easy to complete
No offense but you just have to learn how to play. Yes i know it’s the age old phrase, however you cannot complain about the Mesmer at this point.
I don’t want to make assumptions, but I feel as if you’ve been playing for only a few months judging by your posts. I don’t know why you are saying Mesmers are frustrating to face “at the moment”
There has been nothing, and i mean NOTHING that the devs has done to truly buff the mesmer in many months. Go and read the past patch notes and you’ll see that between the elementalist and the Mesmer, those two classes have had several nerfs.
Oh and if you think confusion is a problem now, then you’d have a fit if you had played the game in the first few months.
That’s not totally true, they’ve buffed underused abilities and weapons for mesmer which are still mostly unused except by hotjoin/duel heros.
I said “the devs have not truly buffed”
I never said they havn’t given any buffs. I’m not trying to come at you but just wanting to prevent future posts from others if they don’t fully read the context of my post.
Additionally, I am not wanting to create an argument, but I want to shed some light on the matter of how the Mesmer is not some alpha profession. Dynamic and versatile, yes.
No offense but you just have to learn how to play. Yes i know it’s the age old phrase, however you cannot complain about the Mesmer at this point.

Well that was massively underwhelming…nothing really specific about stuff coming up, just a video preview of the dungeon
Yea I was essentially going to say the same thing.
Good questions were posed but the answers were ambiguous. All in all, we’ll just have to wait.
Thanks for posting Vol
I can’t believe how many people just sat there and killed themselves on confusion, didn’t have any sort of condi removal, and didn’t have stability or stun breaker for magic bullet + duelist/shatter bursts. Then there were the people who would carry on hitting even though you were in blurred frenzy.
No wonder people like asking for mesmer nerfs, they have no idea what the hell they’re doing.
This right here. I’ve said time and time again about the thoughtless or lazy players who just aren’t understanding how to combat the Mesmer.
Anyway, good video Vashury and good post Colesy
helseth’s doing portal, blink, null field I think that was the other mes
Yea my fault I thought Helseth was carrying Illusion of life too.
team pugging is doing pretty well for being stuck with one
Yea i’m watching ESL too. Illusion of life is very helpful, but again, the Mesmer is filling a role of support. The mesmer might as well be the light armor version of the Guardian with the way things are going
portell, you have a good post, but unfortunately it falls on deaf ears. Other players who play other professions just doesn’t like Mesmer. Always screaming the Mesmer is OP or saying it’s hard to track the real Mesmer. Some players are actually furious that the new tab targeting will not ignore clones.
The fact of the matter is that nowadays, people want things made easy for them. And when the truth is that the Mesmer could use a few buffs, there’s just too much of a large cry from players who despise Mesmers.
I see what you’re saying and understand. But I think that it’s time that there’s other types of modes that people can play. But from what the devs have said, it sounds like they are going to prevent some of the things you mentioned.
I just want to see the game grow. I to would like to see more rewards too. Especially if we could get rewards that transfer from pvp to pve.
I don’t think anyone is against options, are they? So long as they’re reasonable and fulfill goals.
Don’t be naive Chopps. You see the posts and there’s been some threads about people against the idea of adding modes as well.
But i’m not here to argue, as i’m simply saying that when Anet adds the game modes then it draws in more people. The more people, the better. And if one wants to only play conquest, they can do that, but if another person only likes to play another game mode then they can do that too.
I’m not sure what agenda people have in being so obstinate against other game modes. Having several options is a good thing. If you are fine with only playing conquest then so be it, but for the most part the community would like other game modes too.
And let’s be clear, this is all for fun. Deathmode or any other mode likely won’t be integrated in Tpvp. Conquest works fine atm for Tpvp and until there’s data about the other game modes, then there may be things added to Tpvp.
You won’t know unless you give it a chance.
I won’t comment on anything but mesmer cuz its not the classes i play but i can assure you that no one will bother with Mantra of Concentration even after patch. Who in their right mind will waste an utility slot for 2sec of stability x 2? Increase stability duration to a minimum of 5sec for this thing to be worth running and even then it’ll be very situational.
That’s two stun breakers too. It’s not bad really and the fine grained 2s of stability could be used as counterplay to block CC you see coming.
The difference is that on paper it looks fine, in realtime combat, it’s pretty average. It’s not a horrible skill by any means, but it’s not good.
If the devs are going in the direction of having the mantras work for group support, then i feel that the matra’s effects should be bolstered dependent upon the number of allies that the matra affects.
Example: MoC applies 2s of stability/protection to you, but if you have 2 allies with you, then it should provide perhaps an additional 1s per ally that is near you. Allies are affected by the additional boon time as well
Yeah I saw the “leaked notes” and then saw J.Sharp’s thread with what Anet is working on as far as the different aspects for all the professions.
When reading the two sources, I didn’t even have energy to sigh. It’s underwhelming, but at the same time expected. When the devs say that the Mesmer is in a good place then that tells me not to expect much for the Mesmer.
And as far as mantras, I don’t think the group support thing will be enough because the effects of the mantras aren’t great. 2s of stability or protection really doesn’t do anything. However, if it were something like, gain an extra 2s per the number of allies that the matra’s effect is applied to, then it would be appealing.
Please believe me when I say that all Mesmers would kill to have a heal like Healing Spring.
The best heal the Mesmer has is ether fest and that is a true comparison to HaO. And Ether Fest does not rid the Mesmer of any condition, UNLESS, the Mesmer traits for remove condition on heal. Which then only removes just one condition upon healing.
That’s a reminder of how I wish the pet system was…just us summoning 1 of 4 animals as a spirit pet with F1-F4. Then it would switch F1-F4 to 4 different things for the spirit pet. F1 would tell it to attack or back off, F2 would cause an offensive skill attack, F3 would cause a support skill to buff the party, and F4 would be a ‘burst’ command where you and the pet do a move dependent on weapon and pet, which ultimately does massive burst damage, but gets rid of the pet in the meantime. The pet would then be put on a 60 second cooldown, with you being able to summon another pet out in about 3-5 seconds. Aquatic pets would be different than the land pets, and all support and offensive skills would change depending on the pet out.
That’s a lovely idea, but that kind of mechanic takes extensive programming and unfortunately Anet doesn’t truly have the time and/or resources to manage that.
On a side note, the game is pretty good honestly from an aesthetic and action standpoint. If people took the time to just look at the different professions mechanics or just looking at the environment, you’d appreciate the work that was put into the game.
The Ranger’s mechanics with the animal spirit animation from the Ranger’s melee attacks are cool, but I also like just looking at the engineer’s flamethrower attack. It has a pretty sweet effect to it.
And Anet did a good job with the sfx in the game as well. However I do have a gripe with the voices in the game.
I really wish that other players who play the other professions took your advice about taking time to learn and understand things. People want the easy way out and come on the forums to complain about Mesmer.
Yes this is the truth. But I also think it extends to all classes. Sure, there is always a flavor of the month ezmode build for any class, but playing the game requires the player to adapt to the unique mechanics of the class they play. If people want a game where there is just 1 ezmode build for every class and you battle it out, that’s a legitimate argument, but it’s not this game.
good post, i agree with you
Nobody escapes the Purple Side forever. It’s just too much fun.
Agreed
I’ve had moments where I get fed up with how other classes can press AA to win and yet i’m jumping through hoops and doing backflips just to survive.
But I digress, the mesmer is a fun class and it is vital to know pretty much how all the professions work because essentially the Mesmer class is built to negate the other classes skills (i.e. confusion)
This is a nice post to read. The key statement from your post was, “I’ve started really getting the hang of it and now i’m starting to really enjoy the game.”
If more people had patience and perseverance, then there wouldn’t be so much whining and nerfs being done.
The Mesmer isn’t a simple press 4 on GS or press 4 on Pistol and watch your phantasm go to work. There’s much more than that. And yes the Mesmer takes time to get the timing down and honestly it’s the one class where you truly need to know what your opponent’s tactics are.
I really wish that other players who play the other professions took your advice about taking time to learn and understand things. People want the easy way out and come on the forums to complain about Mesmer.
There’s a lot of misinformation about the Mesmer (as usual) and thus is the reason why the Mesmer has received some nerfs that were a bit heavy handed.
Now when the Mesmer is down, people want to continue to kick dirt in its face. The Mesmer hardly has the best dps. Where the hell did the OP get that information from? What data or games is he viewing?
What happened to just learning new tactics and taking time to understand what your opponent is doing?
What I don’t get is why there’s so many complaints about the Mesmer?
I never once complained about the Mesmer even when confusion was strong. But you know what I did? I made a Mesmer, learned it, and then enjoyed the class.
Now it’s been gutted and has taken many nerfs. Yet people are still asking for more to happen to the Mesmer and wants it to be an ambient mob.
Why ilusionist duelist deal more damage than thieve unload?
Why spatial surge deal same dmg than evicerate?
Why mesmer are so hard to kill and hits so strong? You are a true troll.
You’ve been complaining everywhere about the Mesmer. You’re just upset because you got beat by a Mesmer and didn’t know how to counter
Counters exist in gw2? Are we playing the same game?
lol that’s funny. I see what you’re getting at.
But in general, the Mesmer isn’t this indestructible force that you will never defeat. There are however, scenarios where there are very good Mesmer players who are very efficient with the Mesmer
And just generally speaking, there are many people who think the Mesmer is this god-like profession that is so hard to face. Why because of the clones? lol
The Mesmer isn’t a class that just throws out phantasms then sits back and drinks coffee. There’s a lot more involved than that.
Ya, the phantasm mesmer is a seriously high skill build. After you get your phantasms up, you have to do some serious decision making to do.
Do you want to teleport? Do you want to stealth? Do you want to go invulnerable? And that’s just the first decision. Since you have at least two abilities that grant each of those, next you have to decide which to use.
It’s just so many things to think about.
lol admittedly your post made me chuckle
But outside of that, you really have no idea. Do you play the class? Have you actually tried facing real competitive and competent players?
Because it seems the only people complaining are people who just doesn’t have the experience or people who just have low intellect.
Lol, I’ve played phantasm Mesmer plenty for dueling its so strong its silly. Illusionary Unload hits for tons of damage, even on tanky people – claiming it only hurts glass cannon is a flat out lie and you know it. Especially once you get a couple of them up at the same time, damage is crazy….and you don’t have to do a thing. Just get them up and avoid taking damage, with all the tools to do so.
Note – I am not against buffing other stuff that requires ACTIVE play to execute.
nerfing the phantasms would affect a ton of builds that arent phantasm builds. every weapon has a phantasm andseriously having my illusionary warlock doing 20 percent less would be terrible for my entire build(which is based on reflections, and conditions) i need the phantasm to do at least some dmg. how is mesmer supposed to keep up with any of the other classes if our dps gets nerfed that much?
u whine about a phantasm while a necro can melt your life within 5 sec by pressing 2 buttons and a warrior can stunlock u down and a thief stun and destroy u within seconds…. hoow can u guys still whine about mesmers whereas we are barely represented in spvp and a team only wants us for portal and veil?
preach brother
The simple fact that this build is only useful for 1v1 AND can still be countered in a 1v1, should be proof enough that there’s nothing over the top about phantasms.
If Mesmers got a buff to other aspects and received better traits then maybe there wouldn’t be any talk about phantasms.
