And on another note, one build that seems to be pretty good is the minion build. If you can apply constant vuln and keep interrupting your foe via stun, immobilize, or fear then your minions will eat your opponent for lunch.

Yea I have to say that Necro is bottom of the food chain. But they are a wonderful profession to play, but I gained a newfound respect for them when I rolled one and studied it a lot.

It truly baffled me how underpowered their condition damage were. The thief, ele, ranger, and engi all have more condition damage than the Necro. But it doesn’t end there!

The Necro cannot even make an efficient build centered around crit. Yea they “can” create a build, but to use it in PVP, that’s a different story. If you want to legit make a crit chance/damage build then knock yourself out because the damage from the weapons, sans the dagger, do lack luster damage.

I can completely understand why Necros cry foul and they are justified.

5 people cap one point and then lose the game because they’re too used to playing a mario cart version of the game in hot join.

Mario Kart takes way more skill than hotjoin. It might take more skill than tournaments.

I have to say though that this thread shouldn’t have gotten that much of a reaction. There are always threads like this being created, claiming that one set of people are superior to others.

I wish that we’d simply have a game mode that would truly display the different professions builds in a manner that can make balancing better and more transparent.

Hotjoin and tPVP doesn’t do that imo, especially when taking into consideration that you’re also balancing for pve and wvw too.

J.Sharp I want to thank you for what you’ve been doing. Even though there are things that can be done better, I have to say that this game is in a decent state right now.

But I wanted to ask what’s the best way to deliver constructive criticism to you guys? I know the forum is a form of communication and then you guys will join in-game to hear some of the things from players. Although I think there is a bit of a disconnect as far as a common complaint or suggestion from players, and then what you guys view as something needing to be corrected or improved.

Overall things are getting better and I hope you guys add some great things in this upcoming patch. I hope you guys also add at least one different game type to PvP. It’s really something I think would be very beneficial to the game right now.

I don’t run a Warrior, but I really admire this thread and would like to give a lot of credit to not just Defektive, but many of the other posters that has contributed to this thread

I really like this thread because it gets the creative juices flowing and if I were Anet, I’d take a look at this thread for the great ideas and build discussions.

This thread shows that while there are imperfect skills with the hammer and other warrior weapons, players are truly trying to make everything work. Anet should do the right thing and give some “Great Justice” to the warrior.

Pretty nice suggestions. At least your trying to be proactive in trying to give some feasible options.

And being that the Nature Magic traitline has a focus in spirits, I beg Anet to please redo that traitline. Please forgive me, but whoever did the design did a kitten poor job. The elite skills of the trailtine are outlined below:

“Spirits Unbound” which allows spirits to move and follow you. Seriously Anet? The trait would have been “ok” if spirits didn’t get reduced to the state their in now, but that’s not the case. And the elite doesn’t do anything for anyone who invest 30 into nature magic being that not everyone uses a spirit build, and barely anyone uses spirits now.

“Evasive Purity” which removes blind and poison on a dodge roll. I could see if one of those conditions were replaced with bleed, and then you could make a case for Evasive Purity, but this elite skill can easily be a master trait. And for this to be an elite skill, you would think that it is something that can really make a big difference. This trait is not a difference making skill that give a player an edge.

Ive been using the gimped gs for months. In full berserker gear it’s kinda decent in pve but in pvp it’s nothing more than a utility/mobility weapon. Either boost the base damage of 1 and 2 or add a bleed on every first attack of 1. This would make it an interesting condition hybrid weapon.

Gs is very viable in spvp bunker builds but is very limiting in wvw and pve.

Even I’ll agree the greatsword needs to be restored to its former glory, but I still find plenty of viable uses for it, even in dungeons. It’s great for attacking large numbers of enemies while keeping up your health. One example would be AC path 1, where you have to take out graveling mounds. The GS works wonders at keeping the graveling hatchlings from escaping your reach, while still whittling down the mounds.

Fine point but that is taken into consideration whether GS was reverted back to its good damage or not. Yes the GS general purpose for us is to attack multiple mobs while keeping health at a reasonable amount, but the damage (currently) is still not at an ideal place. I can’t see how Anet would think otherwise.

I’m not one of those who wants everything for the Ranger to be OP, but i’m just trying to make a case that when you evaluate the Ranger’s use of the GS, then you can see why there’d need to be an increase in damage.

1. Ranger has medium armor
2. Ranger’s skills for Greatsword aren’t high dps skills
3. Ranger’s pet cannot be used as an excuse for why the GS damage should not be increase.

I use point number 3 only because it would be a point brought up and it’s truly a fallacy. Our pets are alright at best, but not good. There’s still work to be done and if the pets’ damage are increase then fine, but that is not the case.

Either increase damage on our weapons or improve our traits and pets for more viable builds and versatility. It has to be one of the two and i’d prefer the former

Out of all your points, I agree with 1 the most. 2 could actually offer a solution, maybe just vastly increase the damage of certain skills (maul again?) But as it stands, the fact that a ranger is going into a fight with less armor than a warrior or guardian should be a reason to make the Greatsword do more damage.

You mean having a single viable build a.k.a trapper suddenly made the the ranger OP ??

Unresponsive pets, laughable damage when pet is dead (which is 90% of the times), zero control over your pet (lol at being called beastmaster) weapons that even if you removed them from ranger class i don’t think anyone would miss them (a.k.a Longbow, Greatsword, Dagger) and some might not even notice them being removed since they are rarely used and the list goes on and on.

Is true that ranger now is better than it was before due to some fixes, but it still needs work to be a reliable class.

The reasons people think/thought Rangers were awful are that:

A. If you spec anything glass-cannon-ish and stray from a zerg, you will usually be roflstomped.

B. They have no basis for comparison as they had never played another class.

I used to think Rangers had it rough and that I was playing a gimped class. So I rolled a Mesmer and a Guardian, both to level 80, and both to full OJ gear.

That said, I am back on my Ranger,
Appreciating it much more now,
And loving every minute of it.

nice post, except you leveled a mesmer and a guardian and think Ranger is that much better? I like Ranger as well but I think that Guardian at the least has better viability than the Ranger.

People constantly, and I do mean, CONSTANTLY point that out. And I am in no way targeting you, but people really need to immediately stop saying that.

Yes stealth does not mean invuln, but what it does is have the opposing player guessing. Guessing is not the same as knowing. That’s as simple as it gets. You may “think” you know where a thief will be or where is he, but a good, or even average thief can be very slippery

This is not even including the scenario of you just minding your business and a thief sneaks up behind you and goes to town.

The fact that you guys think that it’s a guessing game simply means that you’re inexperienced and your comment come from the ignorance of game mechanics. Do not blame that on the game, but on yourself. If a stealthed thief is ressing his teammate, and you KNOW that he is ressing him…WHERE DO YOU THINK HE IS GOING??? It doesn’t matter which side he’s facing…lay down your AOEs and kill him in a few hits! Stealth ressing is one of the hardest things to pull off in a high end tpvp game because everyone knows that you can just lay down the AOEs and the thief is dead unless he runs. If he runs, the teammate is dead. The trade off is there. I’ve killed countless thieves by doing what I just above…It’s the same deal as stealth stomping – 1 word – AOE.

Yes, people do constantly say that, because it’s TRUE! It’s time you accept the truth, and look at yourself for the fault of not being able to kill a stealthed thief. It’s all experience…your talk of “guessing” becomes knowing.

That’s exactly the message I get as well. And i’ve had this feeling for a while now. I do enjoy WvW but there’s so many gamebreakers that it’s laughable at this point.

I’d hate to be a dev for Anet because there’s a laundry list of things that must be cleaned up for WvW

It breaks down like this.

There isn’t anything OP about the Ranger. It’s the player that is able to fight very well with the Ranger and knowing what works for it. You’ll find the Ranger getting beat more often than a mesmer, thief or almost every other profession.

Now lets apply the player idea to the mesmer. The mesmer can be good in the hands of an average player, yet can be “god like” in the hands of a great player.

Now apply that same ideology to a thief, and anyone’s grandmother can be dominant with the thief. If I am offending any thief players out there, well I’m not sorry but it is what it is.

Also if you’re not going to really go down the skirmish traitline, then i’m not certain of various ways to get good dps from the GS. I’m not saying that in a way as if there isn’t a way, but our GS isn’t a weapon that provides that much dps in general.

But yea starting out with Ranger in pve, I think greatsword is nice to use. But the bows are very nice to use as well.

Longbow in particular takes a while to make it work for you. I don’t think it’s something you can just jump into as a Ranger, on a competitive level.

nope this thread says opposite of nerf it says restrict. in SOTG they said ranger and ele will be nerfed im trying to prevent that before they end up useless like mesmer and thief in top lvl play.

But for the sake of not quoting the paragraph you stated about “your view of the Ranger” i’m just going to simply say that all the things you mentioned made it seem as if Ranger was an OP class.

Am I wrong in my assumption? And honestly if the “pro players” feels that ranger needs to be nerfed then i’m disappointed that Anet would take their viewpoints over the many millions that truly enjoy playing this game. The view of a few doesn’t speak for the voice of many.

Rangers have imbalances (that are combinations of things available) that can’t be refuted.

2 Dodges within Sword/Dagger both on very short cool downs
An invul (in Marksmen)
20s Stability, Fury, Swiftness on a 120s Cooldown
Quickness

Their Short Bow apart from Sword/Dagger are significantly better than any other weapons, but what Anet needs to do is nerf what is currently too good and buff what isn’t.

Basically it feels like BWE3 all over again with heavy range condi comps.

+1 to you sir. But the main thing I disagree with is cutting down on those abilities. The Ranger as it stands now, does not have as much utility viability as the other professions.

You named two evades on 1 weapon for the ranger. And yet the true evade that the Ranger has as one of their utilities is Lightning Reflexes (which could use a bit of help)

But I very much agree with you in regards to the focus of the slightly weaker things that could use a buff. There shouldn’t be just 2 weapons or few traits that are more superior than the others.

And what I fear is that Anet would focus on nerfing the things that works and not properly handle the things that aren’t working. Then we’re back to square one of figuring out how to fix the class again.

I beg you Anet to take a good look at what can be improved before touching anything that is currently working for the class.

As it currently stands, roughly half the ranger’s damage comes from the pet. So having a GS which works as well as warrior GS but adding a pet would be overpowered. I’ve been racking my head thinking how this could be mitigated but I’m drawing a blank. The only thing I can think of is to make the autoattack as good as a warrior’s autoattack, but to make the 2-5 skills less powerful/useful to compensate for having pet damage. But right now the main reason to use GS is because of the 2-5 skills, and nerfing them would generate a tremendous outcry among ranger players (myself included).

(I agree the pet damage is often lacking. They really need to work on that if they want to keep ranger weapon damaged gimped. Pets need agony resistance, have to be able to dodge/survive AOEs, etc.)

Well that’s the crux of the whole issue really. I’m not asking for the damage to be at the level of a warrior, but rather to have some type of compensation for the lack of damage in the current state of GS or the current state of our pets.

Our pets do not hit targets in an efficient manner and the hit rate in general is not in a good place. I’d rather Anet not so much focus on improving the pets’ hit rate and just give an increase to their damage. So that way when they do hit, it will make up for the times that they often aren’t able to attack targets.

Either do that, or improve the damage of the Ranger. And honestly, as often as the pet dies, i’d rather have the Ranger get the damage increase on the weapon. And playing devil’s advocate, people will say that you’d need to learn to keep your pet alive. Believe me, I do that, but the topic of discussion goes beyond keeping your pet alive.

LB is indeed viable, but that doesn’t mean it could still use work (which it does)

But LB skills are pretty nice actually, but the speed and damage could use improvement. Honestly I think those two alone would have a flock of people using LB which is a good thing. Provides more variety

I’ve been leveling a ranger from 1-40 now using GS as a main weapon, it’s been fine not too slow I thought, I turned of autoattack so it’s more involving. But then last night I thought I should unlock my shortbow skills. My jaw literally dropped as i autoattacked mobs to death so fast! The GS is crap, it hasn’t even got comparable damage to 1200 range weapons.. ridiculous.

But yea it was the same for me actually. My first ranger, I really enjoyed using GS but the damage just isn’t justifiable. If i’m wrong then i’d gladly like to hear the explanation from Anet, but until then GS rightfully should get another increase in damage. And not just a slight increase

I have to say it has been a while since I’ve posted in the forums, but this thread has been very interesting and lively.

This is a very good matcup to watch and while i’m actually in one of the servers on T1, I really like watching the T2 matchups. Those servers are the ones that are hungry to get to T1 and so the battles tend to be intense.

Also I am somewhat biased towards BG only because I really like how they fight. I do give credit to the other servers as well, but I enjoyed fighting against BG when they were part of T1.

While i’m not on BG, I have to say that BG is truly a good server that play with a lot of heart even when odds are against them.

I hope BG people doesn’t feel as if they aren’t T1 worthy because honestly they are good sports.

I wish it were somehow possible to have 4 servers play in T1. Maybe that’s a bit much though

Ranger is a easy-to-start but hard-to-master class in my opinion. You have to have deep understanding about the class to open the door of glory, and even after you master it, you can be a tough guy but still not the best one coz ranger don’t have the easy GOD mode like some other classes. By spending same efforts on other classes you might get quicker/better result. Investment VS benefit unbalance is the real reason why many ppl complain.

I think when it comes down to it, it is about the professions and their efficiency with variety. GW2 is such a unique game in regards to how it centers itself around the professions. This is a good game but Anet has to get back to what this game is really about and if they refocus their efforts on each profession then it would do wonders.

If the whole “trinity” ideology is thrown out the window, then you have to do a very good job in making each class/profession be very efficient in performing various things. At this current time, that just isn’t the case for many professions.

Honestly what’s the harm it will do? You say make balancing harder but in what way?

The worst it will do is bring complaints about why it’s not that fun. From there, Anet can just temporarily disable that game mode.

You can’t be so quick to make assumptions without experiencing something to come to a solid conclusion.

The harm that will do is it will take manpower away from things we want/need now: private servers, rating system, spectator client.

Things will be harder to balance because of the situation when X ability is “overpowered” in conquest, but is ok and not used that much in CTF. Do you nerf it? Do you buff it? Do you try to change it so it works decently in both? Do you leave it the way it is? What about PvE? Do you make it a different spell for each pvp mode + PvE and make it more confusing?

That’s a valid point that you bring up

But ultimately Anet has enough data and footage to know what unique abilities would do more harm and what abilities won’t be gamebreaking.

Furthermore, once they implement a game mode like “CTF” then they will get feedback from players about what is working and what isn’t

If they added death matches every game would be 20 seconds long with almost no depth to it. There are no healers so you don’t do things like swapping and CCing to setup kills. It’s just spam damage into someone and kill them.

Imo reverse CTF would fix this whole game.

To pick up the flag you have to channel for 3 seconds.

Person with the flag has no attack besides flag ones which may just be like, aoe cripples etc.

Bunkers protect flag.

Roamers escort flag / carry flag.

I don’t see how that would be any better than conquest. It would just be zerg the flag carrier, and peel for the flag carrier.

Conquest with these secondary objectives provides a lot of depth to the game that hasn’t been explored yet. The community is fairly small so most people are in the mindset that you are “required” to have different classes/builds, or run certain strats.

Simply stated, if they aren’t going to make big changes to the classes themselves, then new gametypes are needed, on a random rotation for tPvP.

Map 1 could be standard conquest,
Map 2 CTF
Map 3 Assassinate the preferred target aka, kill the main chosen enemy and you get a point. 5 points to a win.

Force people to pick builds that compliment a number of scenarios rather than a set map rotation.

Then don’t allow them to changes traits between matches. Now suddenly when one team innovates in one of the three areas, other teams have to change accordingly.

No offense, but that’s a terrible idea. You should be able to change comps between different maps, let alone different game modes.

Having different game modes also makes balancing a lot harder.

Not to go off topic but is there any way possible to join a EU server? I really would like to go on there just to test the waters and see what their pvp scene is like.

I’m not trying to create any derision or anything but I brought up the point in another thread that I think pvp multi-servers across different countries would be pretty nice.

Honestly the Mesmer should now have work done on its weapons and I know this have been said plenty of times but the Mesmer really needs a pistol MH.

Joke aside but in all seriousness i expect theif to be nerfed to a dead content class and when somebody dies from some other class all rage will go on that one, i predict mesmer. And even when theif would be dead content im sure people would still classify it as op if they got killed by one.

My main is thief… not because its OP or whatever you think. At launch it’s the class I thought looked interesting. I usually play ranged in any mmo I play but thought I’d switch it up this time. I always stick to whatever class I started no matter how underpowered or overpowered they are.

As a thief we don’t have any choice but to go for one extreme or the other(pure burst or pure condi) otherwise we aren’t viable. You can run a d/p, which is more of a distraction build but that’s about it. If there were other builds with a higher skill cap that you actually benefit from I’d be playing it but right now we have nothing. No matter what build you go or how good you are you just can’t get any respect as a thief. It’s not because of the players it’s just the way Anet set up the thief class. Honestly, I don’t think they will change it much. It’s always going to be one of the most annoying classes.

Is chain lightning supposed to do 2-3k/hit?

Ya it certainly caught me off guard. I quickly changed my mind about attacking that group when the ele took me to half with two autos. I’ll definitely tread a little more carefully around staff eles now until I know how they’re built.

Im surprised you didn’t know that…but overall the risk is not charging groups with a glass canon ranged character, but rather a group that doesn’t tunnel vision. There are much more dangerous things out there than a glass canon lighning ele. Maybe if I catch you while playing my rifle warrior you’ll see :P

I can certainly attest to that!

I remember playing a pvp match and there was a Warrior who was blasting my kitten off with the rifle doing absurd damage.

How do you sort out who the best ranger is? He’s best at traps, I’m best at GS burst, that guy is best with spirits, that guy is best with longbow, and that guy is best bunker.

That’s very true. There’s many different variables. I think somehow Anet could develop some type of tracking tool that will show what kind of “Ranger” the player is and how good he is with the type of style he uses.

For Instance, if I didn’t use traps and was just straight crit damage with sb and lb combo, then Anet should be able to log my activity as such and keep a ranking of my style and how many battles i’ve won with it.

I don’t know, i’m just throwing suggestions out there but I feel like it would draw a good amount of interest and it would be a nice learning experience

It would be neat to have a way to see who the best players are at their respective professions. Anet needs to institute another gameplay aspect (in pvp maybe?) that will demonstrate this.

Not so much to brag or anything but just to see what makes them so good and how calculative and knowledgeable they are with the profession.

Yea I think it’s time to reinstate some of those nerfs that were given during and a little after release.

I think Anet was a bit too extreme on some of the professions in terms of the nerfs. Now that the game has been out for quite some time and everyone has become very familiar with the abilities of the professions, it would make sense to reintroduce some of the things taken out.

I think Anet doesn’t even have to do a full reinstating of some of those nerfs but just make some tweaks to the nerfs of the other professions and please work on stealth for the thief.

Ele is by far not OP. There are people out there who have been dedicated to the ele profession since the launch of GW2 and they have worked hard to become competitive.

You don’t simply press 7-8 buttons and get a kill. The ele is a more methodical profession.

I’ve seen this before in another game I’ve played (Lost Saga, if you’ve heard of it) where the character Hazama (the game has a lot of cameo characters) is probably the most complained about character in the game. He’s not easy for newbies to use but at max potential he’s seen as completely outclassing every other character in the game, and is generally hated for it.
My point is, complainers don’t care how much effort it takes your character to be godly strong, they just care that you stomped them and will do whatever they can to prove that it wasn’t a fair fight in hopes that the bar will be lowered for them.
