I don’t get these types of post aren’t all MMORPGs inherently built so that the players will grind for something? If there was no grind and everything was given to players, what exactly would you do in this type of game for end game content aside from PvP? Also what do you define as a “satisfying feeling of achievement”?

Class unbalance will kill Raids

… or raids will kill the community.

Engineers is far better at condi damage then anything in the game and Druid is too much superior to Ventari, Guardian, Ele or any other healer in the game.
So basically everyone in raid will look for Scrapper and Druid, and kick almost everything else.

What I think woould be correct is to redesign raids to make other classes useful, or make the other classes at least comparable to scrapper and druid in terms of condi damage and healing.

I don’t know what game you’ve been playing, but last time I checked ranger and necromancer still are “unbalanced” in terms of PvE in that they are sub-par to others. The first time Ranger becomes relevant again everybody starts crying like the world is ending.

Guild Mission/Favor problem for 1-2 p guilds

It’s not like I’m against this after all 1-2p guilds, but no matter how you reword it, they are just people that want to monopolize all the benefits of a guild for themselves. As the guy above already said you can party to do missions and you said before you’re fine with gaining benefits slower.

You missing key parts of the issue/s here, and it has nothing to do with players wanting monopolize all the benefits of a guild for themselves at least for me.

@Thaddeus.4891 yeah, I just used it as an example and maybe a bad one at that.

Thanks to everyone being more civil then what it has been in this thread.

So what I’m not getting is can you or can you not still do missions if you form a party with other people not in the guild? If you can then why is that a problem?

There will always be A META.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

GrapeGatsby.6937

People need to decide if they are meta players or not. The majority of players that do group content are not meta players and do not care what build you are.

Then there are meta players who base all group content around the most optimal builds and class setup. Meta players can play with other meta players, non-meta players can play with non-meta players. There’s nothing wrong with this. It’s how its been in every game with group content.

For example, in WoW (at least back in Vanilla-WoTLK days), meta was effectively 1 tank, 1 healer, 3 DPS. You wanted tank to be a tanky/taunty build, healer to be a healer build, and DPS to be highest DPS build. Was there a chance to get a group together with 3 tanks and 2 DPS, sure I guess you could, but it’s not optimal and it slows you down, and often times cause you to fail.

It’s the same concept here. The only difference in GW2 is that since there are no hard trinity roles, you have a more leeway in terms of not needing the most optimal setup. You don’t need a healer or tank, for example, as everyone can take care of themselves for the most part. But when it comes to optimal raid setup, it may very well be 2 zerk warriors, 4 rabid engies, 3 zerk eles, and a druid or whatever it ends up being.

Do you need to go optimal? Probably not, but people have a right to require an optimal setup if that’s what they want to play. As long as it is clear they only want meta and specific classes, then there’s really no reason to care. Just don’t join their groups, its that simple.

Personally I could care less about optimal, but I also don’t want to end up with a whole team of cleric rangers or something, so even I have standards.

It’s a pretty good example, but it breaks down when you say 1 tank and 4 dps in WoW because a healer is absolutely necessary for content that you’re not extremely outgeared for.

Also someone is going to say it’s not that simple because they want everyone to cater to them it’s best just to ignore them.

Anet always says that GW2 is revolutionary:P Well, actually Blizzard essentially managed to make all content available to everyone (or at least one version of it containing the entire story) after they implemented LFR. This is done even though their player base is more hardcore.

Yup and how many expansions did WoW have before they implemented LFR?

They did do it in the end. Anet can learn from others’ experience and do it much sooner. When we learned, say, physics in high school, we only spent several years on it, instead of spending hundreds of years which were needed for physicists to create the theory that is taught in textbooks.

Yea… I’m not sure about that Anet is a really slow company for example I quit a year and half ago and ranger was bad at dps then, I come back and ranger is still bad at dps. Also LFR seems like something that just doesn’t work with GW2 a difficulty adjustment similar to fractal may though.

the problem is not healing itself, but the fact that it pigeonhole a class. so in HoT ranger can no longer go DPS in raid without being scream at by other for not healing? are other classes not going to be able to heal their team because only druid does healing now? some people play engi for its flexibility and now it end up being a liability.

what I really think is the problem, is HoT is launch with only 1 specialization per class, that is the real problem why it doesn’t feel right nor balance, because it is not. it feel as if the specialization concept is launch before it is fully developed.

Well since they never seemed to care about ranger and the “dps” it deals. At least ranger in HoT will be relevant for a different reason. There’s a reason that groups have “No Ranger/Necro”.

Nobody is forcing the casuals to do the raids chances are raids will only offer different skins and not a stat boost, so why does it matter? It’s the same argument people had about not being able to get legendaries, nobody is forcing you to grind one out, but if you want it then you have to grind for it. Likewise if you like the skins offered in raids, take the time to learn how to do it.

The difference is that legendaries are rewards while raids are content. It’s fine to have less rewards or to get rewards at a much slower pace if you play less, but it’s not fine to have access to less content if you don’t have the kind of gaming time per week that is enough for a 2nd full-time job.

I think you’re overestimating the time and commitment that raids in Heart of the Thorn are going to require. Also there are always groups that don’t complete raids or do one to two bosses to get materials which would take less time. Not sure about this one but did they say that the materials for the legendary precursor are bound to account? If not you could always just buy off of the marketplace.

Well, I am afraid that you misunderstood my post. I don’t mind not having legendary armor, but I do think it wrong to restrict access to content (raid encounter itself) based on the amount of free time that one has, in a game advertised as one without “typical MMO traps”.

I mean I guess they could do what WoW did and just make multiple difficulties of the same raid and just give rewards based on difficulty, but for some reason I feel like people would end up complaining about that too.

Don’t join a highly focused raid guild then, get a casual guild group and work your way through at your own pace. You decide how much of your time you invest in the game, when you make this decision you also need to understand you won’t be getting things at the speed people who invest more do.

The only gates are choices of yourself and those you choose to play with.

In games like WoW, I would say that more than 99.99% players who cleared a raid instance did so with a raid guild for which a raid night = 5-7 hours of game play without any major breaks, and there are several raid nights per week.

It’s difficult to get a fixed group of 10 players to learn raid encounters by playing 1 hour a time. If you would like to limit your game play time to ideally an hour a day, then most likely it’s because you have a challenging job or other real-life commitments. If this is the case, it is likely that you will play the game when you have the time and need for relaxing, and it won’t be exactly the same time very night. Because of this, you cannot join most of the per-arranged raids with 9 other players.

If you pug, then the weekly reset will get in the way. It should be easy to pug the first couple of bosses, but let’s say that the bosses become very difficult starting from the 3rd boss. Then you will wipe many times before you can kill a boss in a pug. This means that if you want to kill one difficult boss, it will require many tries and thus a few hours at least. This would be a problem if your progress is reset every week but you don’t have several hours’ time every day for gaming. If you choose to pug the entire raid instance by killing one difficult boss per day, you many need to play 4+ hours per day for 7 days in a row. That’s a lot of time and it even requires more time than doing the raid in a raid guild.

Therefore, to prevent raids from becoming time sinks, some in-game mechanisms are needed. Cutting the raid into smaller pieces so that people can attack each piece at their own pace would be a viable solution, and no “nerfing” is needed. I don’t mind wiping many times before everyone in the pug team learns a particular encounter, as long as I can spread the effort over as many months as needed.

One quick action that could be taken is to let players keep their current raid progress indefinitely if they choose to. This is not as good as providing more in-game mechanisms to help players attempt one boss a time, but it will help to some degree.

That’s a reasonable argument, but did they say that the materials for legendary precursors are locked to certain bosses? If not then nothing is stopping you from farming just the first few bosses in the raid every week.

Actually the addition of a more involved game mode will likely attract and keep players they don’t currently have. Why do people say “raids exist => the game is changed beyond my liking” when clearly if you don’t like them you can just not do them and the game is exactly the same.

because it’s no longer a matter of just “if you don’t like the content, you can not do them”, it’s now a multifaceted issue revolving the lack of fractal mechanics for differently skilled players to experience content, content gating by gear, content gating by skill level and group composition, content gating by other players who don’t meet their standard of skill level and/or gear checks, the fact that there’s a FULL armour set of legendaries that nobody BUT raiders can get and no other alternatives of getting those legendaries and the potential for other types of content to be affected by the mentality of the elitist jerks who want to keep content away from most players

There is no gating by gear because they never said that armor would have better stats. The only gating which already exists is skill and you know if you just put in the time you could learn the fights…

By the way, I think people who have enough free time for raids should realize that having a fractals-like system for raids will ultimately be good for themselves. Many players bought GW2 because GW2 was advertised as a game without typical MMO traps (e.g., raids which are time sinks). Many will leave if raids are implemented as time sinks in typical MMOs. If the game becomes dead because too many players leave, then no matter how much free time you have, it’s not fun to play in a dead MMO.

Yes. I find this funny. Remember when GW2 was all about NO raids, NO gear grind, NO trinity, etc?

Now it’s raids, gear grinding and advertising for tanks, healers and DPS. I hope thier gigantic turnaround doesn’t drive away players. It cannot, nay will not, survive on the back of the 1%’er hardcore elitist types.

Like it or not, this game is bankrolled by casuals. Alienate them at your peril.

Nobody is forcing the casuals to do the raids chances are raids will only offer different skins and not a stat boost, so why does it matter? Don’t know where to start.
A-Net is on the absolutely right way to bring differences into classes.
This change is actually too late than to early.
Does it really sound right that paper armor grab a great sword and tank or heavy armor guys run around with scepters ?? Really ??

I want imbalance in the game. If i wanna play Warrior i don’t want to play a light armored little Asure. Many people felt so and A-Net thankfully is changing.

I don’t know what to say about the pets. Why would a fire wyvern fight under water ????
It’s like asking why can’t my shark fight on land.. i wan tit so much.

People…. just be thankful that A-Net listens to the fanbase and starts bringing the fun back to GW2.
And they are doing right so following what made GW1 so much fun.

I don’t know why the guy above is calling you a troll. GW1 was indeed completely different from GW2 I felt there were way more viable builds in GW1 than GW2. This was in large part because of how many more skills that were viable and interesting because they actually did something unique. In GW2 it boils down to the same few builds for everyone and “few” is being generous… All this talk about escaping the trinity system to not lock people down and it ends up being the same old thing. Funny because it the same spiel that Blizzard did for Diablo 3 talking about how there is so many possible builds, but it was basically a few reliable skills and a bunch of useless space filling skills.

End-game in my opinion.

This is the reason they added FotM and ascended gear in the first place :<.

Anyone could have told them that simply adding a massive gear grind does not equate to having meaningful (or fun, for that matter) content.

I hope the no-life grinders are happy (which is funny in and of itself, since they’ve almost certainly gone back to WoW at this point), as they’re helping to drive what was once a great game into the ground in record time.

TIL that people who enjoy vertical progression = no-life, but on a more serious note Ascended gear is the most casual grind I’ve ever had compared to legendaries and t3 cultural armor.

If you took out grinding, theres no reason to play GW2 other than wvw or spvp.

True, but if they stuck to their strengths and really pushed out a dynamic environment where personal, guild, and server actions (or lack of actions) have real consequences (a true sense of horizontal progression), then you wouldn’t actually need so much grindy filler to keep people playing.

Not sure how they would do this but it sounds nice in text, but so does a lot of other things, implementing it is the problem.

This game is the most grindy and farmy game I have ever played.

I agree, but Chris Whiteside said they are taking steps to reduce the grind for some of the new stuff.

But folks, bigger picture: Take out the grind and what do you have? What are you left with? Will you still log in? Grinding is what keeps people playing. If you took out grinding, theres no reason to play GW2 other than wvw or spvp. You wouldnt be working for anything new. Youd have it all, already.

With that said, I am against gear treadmills of any kind. Grinding out dungeon sets for weeks or months on end for cosmetics was fine to me.

And that’s why GW1 focused more on PvP than PvE, it’s difficult to keep people interested in PvE without some kind of grind or continual progression.

The problem is it is TOO brilliant. It exposes the lie at the heart of vertical progression schemes too obviously.

Verti progressional people WANT power creep. They WANT to be able to lord it over the plebs. This is what keeps them going, not being able to do the same dungeon with a higher level of agony so they can farm more agony gear so they can do the same dungeon with higher tuned numbers.

And this is why i don’t bother with PVP. Too many monkeys wanting to wave their e-jewels around…

And you think the people that go afk in LA for half the day with their legendaries aren’t waving their e-jewels around?

It has about as many as GW1 did at release. Back when this game was a horizontal progression, GW1 sequel I would have just said “Don’t sweat it, we’ll get more skins later on!”. However, now that it is becoming a gear grind vertical progression, WoW sequel I’m not so sure how many new models will be seeing in the future, since progression apparently will about bigger numbers rather than better looks.

Yup this is JUST LIKE WoW all of the art style, the storyline, the play style, the game concepts, heck even the name is an anagram for WoW amiright? Yea I totally agree I mean like vertical progression = no new skins right? Stat boost and skins are like totally mutually exclusive concepts you make a good point Tolmos.

Mistake me if i’m wrong, but doesn’t legendary weapon’s have the same stat/damage value as exotic’s? And if so how is bringing out another tier of gear gonna help? Won’t the same people that say there is nothing to do say the same thing after getting all the new gear?

As far as I know Legendary weapons will be increased in strength so that ascended fits in between them and exotic.

Yeah I know, Legendary’s used to be an optional grind but now if you want BiS gear you need to grind for a legendary…..

Or you could get the ascended weapons? You didn’t “need” to grind legendaries when exotics were the best stats?

The concern is this: as long as ANet intends to continue to bump the stats of legendary equipment up for free so that they’re always “best in slot” (as they will with the release of ascended gear), then the only true way to make yourself immune to the gear chase (at least with weapons) is to get a legendary. And at that point legendary weapons start to feel a whole lot less optional.

So what you want is for legendaries that take 500-700 hours worth of material to create to not be bumped up into best in slot.

OK just to let you ALL know, I have the ascended backpiece, I have two Ascended Rings (I am running currently level 15 Fractals).

My point was in open world play, there are little to no drops (of anything at all) from MOBs, as such I just return to the fractals and my game has become 1 dimensional. I would like a new set of armour, I am slowly earning the money (gathering the mats) to make this new set of armour.

I HAVE NO PROBLEM DOING THAT.

What I have an issue with is, I shouldnt kill 50+ level 80 mobs in the open world and get only 4 drops (of any kind (in fact 1 blue item, two grey items and a tier 5 crafting mat).

Sheesh, way to miss the point you guys

Buy magic find gear should be getting at least a blue on average from every other mob in OPEN WORLD. Don’t even mention using MF gear in FotM, since we are talking about OPEN WORLD.

I don’t think they have helped themselves at all here. The blokes who are most pissed want an honest roadmap for the next year not a bunch of pr speak.

50 ectos (with the current drop rate) and 250 t6 ingredients…. how is that minimal grind? The deception and lying is galling.

Get fractals and buy the fractal version of the ascended back piece.

1800 fractal tokens is not an easy fix Sir.

It isn’t that bad you should already have a decent amount by the time you reach the point in FotM that you actually need the resistance.

I’m sorry, no. For example, let’s say you start really needing agony resistance around 15 (I know it kicks in at 10) – by completing 15, you would have approx. 415 relics (assuming you didn’t repeat content). You’d have to repeat 10-15 another (approx.) 6 times just to buy the exotic version of the back piece and then farm another 500 relics to ascend it.

You forgot about the ascended rings, however what I take from your post is “I have barely progressed in FotM, but am making a lot of assumptions just to prove my point.”. Almost all agony mechanics other than from Jade Maw phase changes are avoidable by dodges, which is based on player skills if you’re even somewhat skilled and are aware of your surroundings you should be able to dodge most if not all agony procs from general fractal bosses.

Now who is making assumptions.

Your post made a point of “you should already have a decent amount by the time you reach the point in FotM that you actually need the resistance.” – this is different for everybody. People with less skill are going to need this sooner, or people who have horrible luck with RNG obtaining rings. The fact is, level 10 is when “agony” kicks in and that is what I was responding to.

Anyways, I don’t want to get into a big thing about this – I was just trying to educate for people who haven’t progressed. The fact that Chris confirmed they were taking a look at progression through mats & tokens is a good enough answer for me right now.

Ok then we can end it here, just a note though throwing the last punch and trying to run away is not a good method to ending an argument.

You want free things.
I want free things too.
We all can’t have free things though.

You coulda just said hey guys loots pretty bad can we get more.

Get a magic find set and stop finding things to complain about

The game is not the real world. In the real world resources are scarce. In the game world someone with adequate privileges can type in a command and “poof” anything they like in any quantity into existence.

So yes, in a game we can all have free things, in theory.

There would be no point to the game if everyone got what they wanted with minimal effort.

Talk about missing the point entirely. I see you did not distract yourself by actually reading his post. OP did not talk about wanting free things; he made clear an implicit expectation that some degree of reward would come from the game through playing the game itself, as is true of most games. In order to achieve in-game goals through farming, it would take years to accomplish much of anything. But, there’s that gem store sitting there innocuously offering an answer to the loot wasteland. It’s almost toooo convenient.

Actually he didn’t miss the point, the point of the post was “I want the material crafted ascended back piece, even though I know there is an ascended back piece available for fractal purchase, however I don’t use magic find gear which I can buy off tp for 3-4 gold can you improve drop rates?”

You didn’t “need” to grind legendaries when exotics were the best stats?

still a huge fractal grind for people who dont like to repeat the same dungeon 60 times.

Yes, and they said they were sorry and that it was a bad decision to release only FotM as a method of obtaining ascended.

Serious question: why do mainstream companies like Anet use Reddit to answer questions like this, when Reddit is most famous for being a site that people use to post creepy pictures of underage girls? Also: it’s a horrible site for organizing any kind of information. It seems like the sketchy nature and poor structure of the site would be a terrible match.

So a small minority of the reddit community now represents the whole, stereotyping is a beautiful thing.

They also did mention that they were gonna dole out the rest of the Ascended gear over the course of the next year.

So if anything, I can play a bit of a waiting game. But yes, I kinda agree. It does seem like a way to try get around the manifesto by making a new one.

What part specifically in their manifesto?

well, this AMA is basically a political ploy for Anet to go back on their manifesto, rewritting it.

zero grind, zero grind… to me “grinding” is repeating the same thing over and over, and i dont see how there is zero grinding in this game.

Well then according to your definition this game was released with grind in it.

They are answering roughly 1 question every 5 mins so I wouldn’t expect to get “much” out of todays “Ask Me Anything”. So far they have only answered questions reguarding the new content.

Yea but if you actually read their responses you would see that they answered multiple of the E1-E10 questions about ascended gear through their 2 responses.
