someone placed a gargantuan number of orders. they’re trying to raise the price. I’m not sure it’ll be effective in the long run as now people have more motivation to farm them and ultimately he’ll have 1000s to sell which means he wont be able to keep them at that price.

somebody is definitely attempting to manipulate prices (either for immediate gain or future investment). buy orders jumped from about 100-200 to over 1000 on the shield. prices doubled. I’m thinking that was a terrible mistake on their part. no way they’ll be worth that much once he starts selling them.

so they should make it anual event just so you can sell stuff at a higher price?…. lmao

Kind of but not really. It’s not about me. I have a skin, and i would love to see how it fares in the future, but overall its not going to make me a billionaire and i really wouldn’t be too heartbroken if it turned out to be worthless in the end.

my problem with keeping the content available permanently is that its somewhat out of step with the way past holiday content (and likely future content) has worked. A holiday comes, you partake in the activities, if you put enough time in you get some unique rewards, and then the holiday goes and takes the activities and rewards with it. Later on you display your rewards as a way of saying “hey remember the time this happened? wasn’t that cool? I’m glad I was there”.

It sounds like the plan is similar to what i said (though i can’t speak to the future rewards) in that when they have new content available they’ll open it back up but until that point it’ll be removed. I have no issue with this because its being done for the sake of content, not JUST so people can have another year to get their skins. It took me roughly an hour and a half of work to get enough baubles for a skin. I grabbed the two I wanted and was pleasantly surprised to find a rare skin a chest. If you can’t find that much time over the course of a month to get what you want then what business do you have demanding it become a permanent fixture?

The fact of the matter is that nobody wants it to be permanent so that they can go back and enjoy the four levels currently available over and over again. They want more time to get skins. If you’re asking that more content be added as well (as some people are) then that’s awesome and i agree, i would love to see more content. But ultimately rewards from events such as these are rewards not only for finding the time to earn them (again, not that hard) but for earning them during the period in which the event was active. Making a special event permanent devalues the rewards on more than just a monetary basis. If everyone has what you have then what you have is no longer special.

I’m hoping the devs will have the good sense to remove old rewards/skins in favor of new ones so as not to devalue them too much.

it should also be noted that some skins will fare MUCH better than others. namely the greatsword and the shield which are already the highest price. this is due purely to flash factor. the GS is big and the shield has a cool logo. IF the others rise it won’t be by nearly as much.

I also think that if they find a way to remove farming (personally i like tying drop rates to score) the prices will grow immensely.

after april they’ll rise a bit. during april they’re going to drop like rocks. i strongly suggest you sell any you have immediately then buy them later on in the month when there’s an excess. they’ll rise by a few gold over the next year.

I think there’s a much better option than either of those. Just make it a recurring event. make it annual or semi annual and switch up the rewards each year. as it stands now if it stays a permanent fixture the skins will be worthless. Hell, at this rate they’ll be worthless by the end of the month anyway. I love the gameplay but after one or two rounds of full exploration there’s not much left to do with it except grind for skins which makes for a terrible addition to the game as a whole.

if instead the rewards were phased in and out and new content was added each time it became available the overall experience would be far better.

For the most part i really have no issues with this content. Love it really, it’s fantastically silly and makes me feel like I’m 9 again.

I have found one “bug” though that while avoidable is a tad annoying. When you first enter the fight with king toad, at least in my experience, it’s impossible to break the gem. no matter how many times I hit it nothing happens. I’m not positive when it actually becomes “damageable” but the best strategy I’ve found (and it has yet to fail) is to hide in the safe spot until he does his first tongue attack then fight him like normal. other than that i have no problems with his difficulty or anything. I’m assuming this is a bug but it may just be that i’m missing something key.

WvWvW needs a new game type

in WvW

specifically a time limited or objective oriented “winnable” game.

I like WvWvW for the massive brawls and such and would never suggest that the current setup is wrong in any way, but occasionally the endlessness of the battle makes it seem a bit pointless particularly when you’ve been fighting the same two servers for the past three or four weeks. It just needs some more options.

what i would LOVE to see in the future would be a new constantly repeating game type with either a time limit, an objective, or both that awarded points to the world that won. It would solve a bit of the tedium issue I personally have with WvWvW. Right now you capture the castle, then you hold the castle, then you lose the castle, then you capture the castle, then you hold the castle, then you lose the castle, then you…

you get it. Sure, there’s some strategy to it in that somebody needs to coordinate the assaults and the defenses, but you never see your strategy come to fruition because there’s no winning. Eventually you’ll leave and all your work will be undone until the next time your particular group’s timezone hops on and does it again. With a limited time frame and objective you can actually see your strategy pan out and feel like you’ve accomplished something.

I would just personally enjoy it if i were able to hop on for a bit, play an hour long game, and leave knowing that (if my world won) the victory i secured wouldn’t disappear within five minutes of me logging off.

As i stated, i enjoy the current WvWvW setup, sometimes i just want something different. A bit of variety while still helping my world’s cause.

Obligatory xkcd comic.

For the record, you definitely would not use this method alone, since it would fall quickly to a dictionary based method. You still have to mix it with some other methods like substituting letters and random punctuation. Just throwing that out there.

though i’ve already answered this issue i’ll go ahead and make another point that came up in the xkcd forum’s thread about this comic. using four random words pulled from a dictionary is actually vastly more complex than you may be imagining. to quote from that thread "I found a dictionary containing 118620 words quite easily. Assuming you use at least one unique word in there your password would be closer to log2(118620) * 4 =~ 64 bits of entropy.

To have only 28 bits of entropy with that solution your password would have to be findable by a dictionary containing only 128 words. That seems quite unlikely."

in essence there are a lot more words than letters…

this means that depending on the length of the chosen words it would actually have a better shot guessing letter combinations rather than word combinations and simply hoping it’s not too long.

the mistake you’re making is thinking of a dictionary attack as needing to guess only one word. that’s how they usually work and that’s why they can be effective. 118000 words isn’t that much to guess, but each additional random word increases the difficulty exponentially such that by the time you hit four it’s basically unbreakable via brute force.

There’s a miscalculation in this comic. The password composed of 4 words will fail to a dictionary attack. Basically, it’s the equivalent of a 4 letter password.

except that unless they’ve read this comic chances are no program will assume your password is four random words because that’s not how the vast majority of people create theirs.

even so there’s a easy solution, simply pick one word out of however many you use that isn’t actually in a dictionary. for instance a very unique name or a gibberish word that only holds significance to you and your friends.

for instance “spongebob doesn’t know wumbo” will NEVER be guessed by any program because even if it does know “spongebob” it doesn’t know “wumbo”.

the ultimate idea he was trying to get across was that password doesnt have to be impossible to remember to be secure.

It could be worse. My college automatically forces me to change passwords every three months if it’s between ten and fifteen characters long, every six if it’s more, and then it won’t allow me to use any of my previous four. Ultimately that’s just useless because i’m not going to come up with a completely original password every three months for fear of forgetting it. Instead i just change the numbers around a bit which has absolutely no effect.

Minute long lag

Grendel.7918

I’m just wondering if anyone else is having this problem.

I’d blame it on switching internet providers but it consistently happens only during WvWvW or world boss fights. I’ve spent most of my time on here the past few months leveling to 80 so i don’t know if it was caused by a recent patch or anything. All i know is that when I started playing around in WvWvW again I discovered i couldn’t do jack because having more than about fifteen people on screen at a time kills it.

i’m not talking a few seconds of skill latency, its literally a minute or more of my guy just running around refusing to do anything then suddenly taking 5 billion damage.

its not my computer, it handles the animation of any number of people fine, and while my internet does occasionally have issues when it works at all it works great so i don’t think it’s that.

I can have perfect latency running all the way to the battle with no issues whatsoever, and for the first five seconds or so of the fight it’ll be fine, but after that i might as well just start getting ready to run back again because i can guarantee that in the 45 seconds when nothing seems to be happening i’m actually being zerged by every every enemy in a 100 block radius.

i think some people here are missing the point. its not about difficulty. i would LOVE it if some of these mobs were more difficult. the issue is entirely in the tedium of grinding the same groups over and over again because of their respawn rate.

some of you say “just use aoe and it’ll be fine!” without realizng that not every class has a perfect aoe setup and sometimes even that isnt enough. if you see a cave filled with a line of five to six enemies your thought shouldn’t be “well, if i’m to have any hope of clearing this i’ll need to charge in headfirst, aggro everything in sight, and then kill them all at the same time.” that’s a patently ridiculous strategy from any standpoint EXCEPT fast respawns.

a more appropriate method of increasing difficulty would be for each enemy to be a good deal harder to kill while perhaps providing increased exp to offset.

for those of you who still don’t get it let me put it this way: no matter what i do i will never have enough DPS or aoe DPS to kill four ettins and a veteran ettin. its not that its difficult, its that i can keep myself alive and continuously kill ettins for all of eternity, but no matter how long i do this for unless i have an extremely overpowered amount of aoe DPS i will never manage to kill them all before they begin to respawn. there’s no degree of difficulty to staying alive in that situation. i could do it for as long as you want me to. there’s just no point because in the end i’m running on a treadmill.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Grendel.7918

Grendel.7918

I am in total agreement with this. as a solo leveller i can’t possibly make it into certain areas. it’s not that i die, that hardly ever happens, its that by the time i kill one group the group behind them has respawned, wandered toward me, and joined the fight. so i kill of the first group, move on the to respawned group, and by the time i kill them off the first group has respawned. it forms an endless cycle. its like the red queens race, if i play absolutely perfectly i’ll remain in the exact spot I’ve been in for the past ten minutes, but if i make even a single mistake i’m pushed back to the entrance of whatever area i’m in.

I’ve found dredge and ettins to be particularly prone to this issue. i just completed a “heart” in dredgehaunt where i barely moved from the questgiver’s location because the nearby patrols respawned so fast.

one of the most egregious examples i’ve found was an attempt to get to a skillpoint in an ettin cave (I don’t remember the exact location). I killed the three or four on the way into the cave and saw there was a veteran guarding the point with 2-3 normal mobs nearby. I went ahead and pulled them 1-2 at a time but by the time one was down those behind me had respawned. ultimately rather than being able to clear them my kills became slower and slower as i had one then two then three and finally four ettins on me simply because of respawn. I killed around 20, that’s each one four times, before finally giving up and calling in some help.

mind you, i don’t mind getting help, but i prefer to do it when a task is hard, not impossible. impossible is a measure of game mechanics, hard is a measure of skill.

as i said, crafting isn’t that much help unless i want to blow money on materials for items i wont be able to use until later. I’ve already got an 80 thief and i never really had a problem with gaps later. maybe one level or so, but when you’re past about 40 a level doesn’t effect you much. at 15 it can make things exceedingly challenging though. I realize i could hop over to a new starting area, but that’s not really something that should be forced. its kind of story breaking. I just find it a bit weird that the gap exists at all let alone that it always exists.

Posted by: Grendel.7918

Grendel.7918

I’m not likely to benefit from it any time soon, but it would be nice. I’ve gotten five characters either most of the way or all the way through their starting zones and i always run into the same problem. i come out of it about half a level of experience past 14. This seems minor but its pretty annoying. The first heart in the next zone is always a level 15 and after that there’s a 16. finishing that heart doesn’t usually get me to 15 though and certainly not to 16. maybe I’m missing something but it seems like the starting zones could use maybe one or two more hearts or a slight boost to experience.

Crafting doesnt help that much either. I always make sure to craft enough to prematurely make level 20 items and I still end up with the same issue.

How many basic viable builds do thieves have?

I’m curious mostly due to the impending backstab nerf. Being as I play a backstab thief I’m sort of just wondering what my alternatives are. I know that condition build is a possibility, but I’m wondering about others. It seems like if they nerf backstab it’ll have to either remain a viable build as a whole, which would mean buffs to other areas of the build (of which there are none because of the nature of the build) or compensate by buffing skills in a manner that would create entirely new build options. we can’t possibly have just two viable choices, but somehow they’re all i hear about.

I don’t want specifics, more just general build archetypes such as what skill a build might be centered around. thoughts on what could be buffed to provide more options would be welcome as well.

It would really be for the best if Anet would just level the playing field entirely. Clearly these mechanics are broken. We should all just play the same class with one atack. Then, to remove the risk that someone might get lucky and deal more damage health would be removed too in favor of a mini game in which you got to make one move for each attack. It would consist of a 3×3 grid on which you placed one symbol designating your control each turn. The person who controlled 3 spaces in a line woul be declared the winner.

This is obviously the only fair solution. Seriously Anet, what were you thinking? Classes!? Mechanics!? Variety!? It’s just absurd. Get to work on this NOW or I want my money back with interest. Also, I demand a pudding pop. Get to it!

Population (and even level) don’t determine skill, though.

which is precisely how my idea would work. a server with twice the skill and twice the population would conceivably earn a similar point total as the others rather than four times as much. a server with and equal population at twice the skill would earn twice as much though (as they should).

World vs World or Timezone vs Timezone

in WvW

Posted by: Grendel.7918

Grendel.7918

There is a solution to this problem that fixes everything. Anet needs to make point distribution rise or fall based on population. A server that averaged ten times the population of the others on a battleground during a certain period would earn 1/10th the points while a server with 1/10th the population would earn 10 times the points. that’t not the exact math obviously, but you understand the premise. within a week we’d see which servers were succeeding based on population spikes and which were succeeding based on strategy. the servers with massive populations during one period would see that population slowly disperse to all the other servers. there would be no reason to stay and pve the battleground if there was no benefit to it. in the mean time it would make the scores a bit closer to reality.

What was the rationale behind allowing all players, regardless of chosen crafting skill, to collect all materials? I feel like it would have been a much smarter idea and formed a much more robust economy to limit it to one node type. it would have forced them to buy the materials they couldn’t collect on the trading post and dramatically increased the value of the excess mats they had.

secondly, bots: Please for the love of god do something about them! along with the “issue” mentioned above bots are the force driving all prices to either near vendor or to the cost of the materials necessary to make said item. sure, you could raise the value of any given item by decreasing the drop rate, but this doesn’t really solve the problem because the ratio of items collected by bots to items collected by players would remain the same. if you made an item rare enough to raise its value somewhat it would bankrupt new players when they needed to buy it and no longer had any chance of looting it somewhere in the world. If something isn’t done about the bots then eventually the amount of any given item on the trading post will increase to such a point that regardless of the supposed rarity it will become nearly worthless.

My suggestion would be to simply make captures worth less when you have vastly greater numbers. a simple ratio would suffice. if you have 10 times as many people on (the entire server rather than just fighting in WvW) you earn 1/10th the points. if you have 1/10th the number of players you earn 10 times as many points.
