1. So single target builds should be removed from the game instead of balanced to compete with AOE? Logic.

Thats a debate in itself, if i have a superior range that you cant get into or you have lost 1/3+ of your health before you can defend yourself thats a problem especially if you are in a large group. If your entire zerg can have that much health removed from it before it can attack back thats a balance problem

Against a single target in melee range my engineer build can do over 12k damage within a few seconds to 5 targets if the attacks crit. Two engineers doing that could kill 5 players instantly. If it wasn’t for the high glass cannon requirement for that kind of build and if the aoe limit didnt exist you would get alot of zergs getting wiped by small groups of players that take them by surprise.

Melee characters would be useless against range if ranged could wipe half a zerg before the melee got into attack range. The reason the AOE limit works is because 5 players can’t easily wipe 30 so even if they score a few kills the melee range players will still get to the ranged in time to attack.

3. dodging is the only way to get out of some AOE skills since the first warning you get is the red circle on the ground, firestorm for example. If you are crippled you arent escaping that and if the game lags slightly you wont be able to escape that circle in time. without the aoe limit that could be an instant kill if the attacks used the skill at the same time at the same target.

2. I’ve never had a class that has superior range do that much damage to me before I can get to them. I think they are balanced around that.

3. There are mobility utilities too and in that case you should just save your dodges for when you’re crippled and walk out when you’re not. As was stated before AoE is not as powerful as you’re making it out to be and if you’re getting one or two shot by AoE then your gear needs some serious attention.

I am okay with the zerging. On T4 and below (hint: get out of the T1/2 zergfests), servers can’t maintain 30+ people on more than one map. If you don’t like the zerg, go to a different map. I think it’s foolish to introduce mechanics which allow a group of 5 to take out a group of 15. Numbers are always a viable tactic. All I see is a bunch of people who don’t like the meta for WvW and want the game mechanics changed to suit their purposes.

The problem is that numbers right now are not just a viable tactic, but the ONLY real tactic as very few things can break up a huge zerg…I would argue that really only another zerg can do that. Really dumbs down WvW a lot.

So let me drop my 5 cents here.

Since your primary concern is big number groups aka zergs and you give voice to concerns related to 1-2-3 man annihilating way bigger enemy i would like to propose to make AoE skills a splash or channeling skills.

The idea is similar to chain lightening where it strikes the person casted on and jumps to next one and so on till it reaches a cap.

But the difference i propose is to make it increase dmg. with every enemy after a certain number it hops.

E.g. 1-2-5-10-30-50-80-120 dmg and so on.

So basically a grp of lets say 5 enemy wont get more dmg. than 5 (1-2-3-4-5) if a aoe channeling skin being casted on them while a grp of 20 will get alot dmg. since the skill will hop on more people and with every person it hops will increase it dmg.

The idea probably is not good nor good presented due to my lack of fluent English skills but you should be able to get the idea.

I can’t say one way or the other if that would really be good or bad, but I can say that it’s an interesting take on it.

Sigh, to remove the AOE cap anet would need to make single target damage practically one hit kill

If you can do 500 damage to 30 targets at once with one skill a single target skill needs to do 500×30 to one target. but since you wont always have 30 targets to hit with an aoe skill the damage could be between 500 and 15000

It doesn’t mean that at all, they wouldn’t need to touch single target damage.

If no one stands in the Area then it does 0 damage. Seems pretty balanced to me.

Why is it that when ever we bring up removing the AoE limit people assume that the targets of the AoE are just going to stand there and take each and every hit. People will move, and if they don’t then they will be punished accordingly.

It’s just too easy, as it stands now, for a zerg to take fully upgraded towers. With the insane protection/regeneration stacking and combo field use Zergs already have a stupid advantage against defenders. Give zergs something to worry about other than running into an enemy zerg.

Yea, zergs already have such a huge advantage with their numbers alone that they really shouldn’t be given any extra incentive to do so. People are fooling themselves if they think these super zergs are anything but overpowered. If we follow that line of thinking things that are obviously overpowered need to be balanced. Removing the AoE limit seems like a logical step in the right direction for most people.

Plus isn’t limiting the number of people that can be hit by it counter intuitive for an AoE skill? Anything in the area should be affected by it’s very nature.

Stealth attack: thief stealthily breaks bones in your legs to provide a on immobilize…stealthily breaking bones, that’s a thing, right?

Yea, I dropped the feedback bubble for the two reasons already mentioned: As if getting teleported into the enemy zerg wasn’t enough, taking retaliation damage from the people shooting themselves is just silly. If anything they should be taking retaliation damage to themselves.

I don’t mind zergs if they stay in the 30-40 people range, 70-90 man armies make my computer choke a little and that’s when the game starts to get un-fun. Being a part of a super zerg isn’t fun either…even when we are absolutely crushing everything, hitting an enemy once before it dies is really really boring.

Yea I was just trying to get a little more staying power. Damage is only so awesome if you’re around to admire the corpse you just created afterwards right? Maybe I’m just not good at being mobile. I usually switch up my utilities but I typically run with Mirror Image, Decoy, and signet of illusions so my living bombs can make it to their target and for the shatter reset in a pinch. My elite is typically mass illusion. Any suggestions on utilities?

Hey fellow mesmers! I primarily WvW and I used to run a full zerker set. I am tired of getting destroyed so easily and I started switching up some gear. My armor is now a mix of knights and valk, my accessories/rings/amulet are all zerker and my backpack is the balthazar temple exotic. All of these things have ruby orbs/jewels in them. I like the increased survivability and my damage hasn’t suffered a whole lot but that got me curious about what other mesmers gear looks like. I main a GS and use sword/torch in my alt set and I traited myself for shatters because it’s my favorite style of gameplay.

So shatter mesmers, what kind gear are you rocking in WvW? How is the feel of the gameplay with those stats?

Few notable moments from last night for me, GoM’s zerg making my computer cry without culling…made for an ample warning that something bad was coming. It actually saved me a respawn, because I immediately started booking it in the other direction haha.

To PAXA, that was seriously impressive in Woodhaven last night. I was the GS mesmer that kept trying to snipe you guys from the ramparts. Was a lot of fun and it goes to show you how small team builds and tactics can be effective in WvW. Do you guys run defensive armor set ups or does all that come from the insane amount of boon generation you guys have? Good show PAXA!

HoD sure has gotten a lot of players lately…did you guys convince your entire PvE playerbase to start getting involved or was that from transfers? I hope this doesn’t unbalance the matchups again because I was liking where it was at. :-(

I.e. it was powerful initially while completely bugged on the OP side. Then the fix harmed it the other way, and since then unless it’s as powerful, or more powerful than it’s OP bugged form, players will hate it and say its rubbish forever more.

And yet I still see iZerker users tear groups of players apart in WvW all the time…

Repeated because it’s reality: Anet confirmed it’s bugged and they are working on it so it’s not just a perceived issue by the player base.

It’s the other ones….you know those guys that are all covered with Madness and stuff. I keep trying to give them hot oil baths to cleanse them but for some reason they are very against the idea.

On topic: Any of the server’s in t7 are a good choice they are all good teams and, having been on GoM previously (moved to NSP) and talking with some people from HoD, they are all really fun groups to run around with. The two non leading servers in t8 need people too, but I don’t know how transferring to t8 sits with you. Might be a gamble you lose. Good luck with your choice!

Everything in WvW is given way too easily because of the huge number of people, so I don’t consider that an argument against retaliation specifically.

I don’t count that as an argument against it either. Not everything is as powerful as Retaliation. They nerfed quickness for this very reason.

As a mesmer I would love an additional utility slot. Our elites are pretty good, but so are our utility abilities. I would probably pick null field as I can’t seem to find room for it on my bar and it’s really nice to have.

One could say the same about your complaints.

If you don’t want to change what you’re doing to deal with retaliation, that is your problem, and you will continue to have difficulty with it.

Say what you want, but he’s right though. Retaliation is given way too easily to be as strong as it is right now.

I think the waypoint system is fine the way it is. There’s a lot of real estate to cover in WvW and not all of us have speed buffs to work with. I just wish they would make fully upgraded keeps harder to get into…if they did that then I could see them making it so the cool down on a contested waypoint was much higher. As it is though keeps are very easy to capture unless you have your entire zerg there already defending it when they show up.

Retaliation and Confusion counter fast attack builds, Blind and Aegis counter slow heavy attack builds. You’re being countered by skills that are meant to counter your attacks.

Granted, but it doesn’t mean the counter doesn’t need to be tweaked a little.

Oh well, another Guardian mechanic the mob wants to be nerfed…

btw Retaliation uptime is pretty short in general. Light + Blast is 3 sec Retaliation against 20 sec of 3 stacks might for fire + blast. Dedicated Retaliation guardians sacrifice most of their damage output for + % boon duration.

/edit: I forgt something:

Guardians do say “I’m out of position and that thief just stealthed, time for an aegis.”

Only that blocking doesn’t put the thief out of stealth.

I don’t really want retaliation to go away…I actually think it’s a cool mechanic same as confusion but I think it just needs to be tweaked a little (again, same with confusion). Right now with just my auto attack (greatsword mesmer) it hit’s three times and doesn’t seem to be mitigated by my toughness, and now that my auto attack has some line piercing I auto hit anyone that gets in the way 3 times (up to 5 people right?). Not to mention my clones AoE exploding that’s even more retaliation damage. So in large zerg situations I can often hit anywhere from 3+ people with my basic attack and eat up to 15 hits from retaliation. Give retaliation a ridiculous duration which I have seen on some people and shared with a group then it basically nullifies my damage, unless I run some boon removal. Even with the boon removal though I can still kill myself in a few seconds with the above example if I’m not hyper aware of my enemies rocking retaliation.

Again, not complaining. Love that it makes combat more complex, but some tweaking needs to be done to make it so classes that use multiple smaller hits (DPS) aren’t being overwhelmed too quickly with damage as opposed to Burst DPS which doesn’t have to worry about it.

TL;DR: Normalize retaliation’s ability to be punitive for all types of direct damage and not overly punishing for one type.

I have a few different alts, but game play feels boring on all of them…I think if I were to start another one it would likely be an elementalist or an engineer as they seem to have more complex mechanics. Element/Kit swapping respectively seems like it could make for some interesting combos.

GS main, sword/torch here…I highly recommend this combo. It’s great at causing chaos at ranged and then once they try to get too close switch it up and use the prestige, iLeap, and blurred frenzy and mind wrack or cry of frustration shatter to remind them of how dangerous you are at close range. If you gear yourself right (invest in a bit of toughness) enemies won’t have a save zone to engage you at. ;-)

So it’s looking pretty clear it’s not a specific graphics card/system issue as it’s pretty wide spread. I would imagine since this patch messed with model/texture loading that maybe there’s an issue with the speed of loading that specific model/texture or maybe that file was corrupted with the patch. Either way, it seems to be a programming issue.

What a few people pull off doesn’t speak for an entire server. If it was an exploit that stuck the lord outside, then I completely disapprove.

I do find it funny that your own teammates were telling you to “leave or stop kittening please,” though. That’s the GoM attitude I’ve gotten to know so well.

I don’t think he was calling out a server. Just calling attention to the oW guild members that participated in that…which I doubt was an intentional thing, I hope anyways. I’ve seen that happen before on that exact keep but I couldn’t tell if it was an exploit or not at the time either.

You know that whole beam piercing effect they added to the Mesmer GS #1? Yea hitting a pack of guys that all have retaliation is a nightmare. That’s three hits of retaliation damage from every single person. It’s pretty deadly.

I was wondering the same thing. Hopefully someone who complains about it can explain it, because using GS in PvE, I don’t see iZerker do anything particularly wrong. Sometimes if a target is moving when he spins at it (using what is that, GS3 Warrior?), he will only have a couple of attacks connect, or he’ll spin through a nearby target doing minimal damage, but that’s just as with Warrior GS3. Most of the time he does good AE damage, and sometimes, esp. up against a wall (just as with Warrior GS3), he does awesome damage.

I mean, I wish he did that all the time, but it’s clearly not a bug that he doesn’t. Presumably there is something worse he does though.

Anet confirmed it’s bugged and they are working on it so it’s not just a perceived issue by the player base.

Btw guys, has anyone else noticed the change to the damage ?
From 3 different “levels” of damage, there are now 4. I’m not sure which was buffed or nerfed, I think it’s only the 600-900 which is new but I’m not sure. I had made a screenshot of it before the update but it seems like tooltip don’t appear on screenshots :/

I thought it was hitting for less last night but I just assumed I was imagining it and maybe it always hit for that much. You’re right though I can usually get around 2000 damage with it and it seemed like the highest number I saw roll off of it was around 1400 I think.

T7 hasn’t adopted this method either. Really hoping it stays that way. It sounds super boring to play that way.

^ All of that stuff helps, but the easiest method is to just turn off NPC names. If you mouse over or select a clone you’ll see the name, but if you see a name otherwise you know it’s the Mesmer.

Wait, for real? That is soooooo lame. That kind of explains why some people can spot me without much effort. Are there plans to remedy this on ANet’s part or is this working as intended?

I have a feeling this was a result of programmers just not wanting to do the work to code this more than balance issues though, I guess.

I hope that’s the case. I would look forward to that functionality being added. I wouldn’t mind putting a bleed on anyone that gets crit by their beams.

Spatial Surge skill : Now strikes up to two enemies that it passes through, in addition to the primary target.

the change doesnt affect clone attacks

Luckily they never officially stated they were nerfing shatters and I’m really glad they didn’t. Shatters while dealing decent damage when specced for it, are no where near the type of burst some of the other classes can achieve with much greater frequency, I’m looking at you thieves and warriors. ;-)

Before putting in free transfers again, I wonder if Anet took into consideration the issue with free transfers, and how a mass transfer to Kaineng disrupted PvP/WvW for many servers as they made their climb from Tier 8, giving many servers weeks, upon weeks of interruption, that left a very bad taste in the mouths, even causing many to quit.

It’s bad enough we didn’t get the WvW patch many of us expected.

I think they are hoping that all the light servers decide to consolidate into the medium population servers. or maybe they are hoping people from T8 will transfer off if they are tired of being stuck there. I can’t say it’s a bad move really…at least they are somewhat controlling where people end up now as opposed to before where you could just transfer where ever you wanted for free.

OK, it’s a beam between you and your target, but the width is MASSIVE! Not likely intended as such, and it will probably be fixed/nerfed – and soon.

Edit: And they still hit the closer targets even if your primary target is out of range.

Ssssshhhh. I want to do massive waves of damage and call it working as intended for a bit. Will make up for my iZerker not cooperating lately. ;-)
