100 badges per 1 WvW ticket

in WvW

Posted by: Jong.5937

Jong.5937

Personally, although this boat has probably sailed, I’d have given one-off tickets to veterans based on “WvW experience” and then had a far smaller pip gain advantage. Maybe enough tickets for the backpack immediately if you had “max” “experience”, however that was determined.

Using badges for tickets gives unfair advantage to hoarders over those who spent badges for many reasons – some for personal benefit, but many not and would discourage using them for those purposes in future. And, even at 10:1, as others have pointed out, the conversion of newly earned badges adds negligibly.

I’d also have used WvW AP points rather than WXP as it rewards broader play styles, but that’s a different debate. .

I’m confused. I’ve got about 20 so far and I’m only about 1/5th of the way to the backpack. I know “RNG” and all that, but I can’t imagine anyone will get to the point of having all the required Skirmish tickets and not have 1 legendary spike! There is no rush.

Outnumbered Idea (not about No. of Pips!)

in WvW

Posted by: Jong.5937

Jong.5937

Yep, I get that, I do. But that kind of ppt blob happens already when there is a karma train commander. Only some people are into that and here, at least, they are very heavily encouraged to go to near empty (cough! Desert! cough!) maps.

Personally, I can’t see any of the popular/proper WvW fighting commanders hoping maps just to earn a few extra pips and they would probably be very happy to see those players who wanted such action going to a map where they are not. How much help would a bunch of ppt farming rallybots be defending garri etc. anyway! And those true WvW roamers would come home from an outnumbered map as they do already, they can always go back and gain their buff later after collecting their lootbags.

Some good commanders might choose to start a raid on an outnumbered map but that seems like a good thing to me.

And although, this thread was supposed to avoid the subject pip allocation, if this did get so popular it overwhelmed other play it could be balanced by reducing the bonus pips. The 1 hr suggestion is also just a first stab suggestion. If that’s too strong we could go with 30 or 45 mins – enough to reward choosing to go to a quiet map, without over-rewarding play on a map that is no longer outnumbered.

But it would need to be something to watch, I agree.

Outnumbered Idea (not about No. of Pips!)

in WvW

Posted by: Jong.5937

Jong.5937

So, this thread is not about abuse of pips or even about afk farmers! It’s about trying to make the Outnumbered buff more effective in doing what it is supposed to do.

It is supposed to encourage people to move to, AND PLAY ON, underpopulated maps. But, you only know about outnumbered when you have already joined the map, or if it’s broadcast in team chat (pretty unpopular these days!) and as soon as the map goes over the pretty low threshold the bonus disappears. It encourages people who find themselves on an Outnumbered map to stay quiet about it to preserve their pips!

Suggestion:

- ‘Outnumbered’ causes you to gain a 2nd ‘Selfless’ buff that is refreshed each second and lasts for 1 Hr
- It is ‘Selfless’ that grants you the pip bonus
- ‘Selfless’ is lost if you jump maps but will remain as long as you are outnumbered and for 1hr after Outnumbered disappears

- Outnumbered is shown in the map selection screen
- Outnumbered disappears from map selection a few seconds (say 10s to allow for loading) before it is removed from the map. This way individuals or whole parties are guaranteed to get the buff if they double-click while it is shown.

This is a genuine incentive to choose and play a low population map. You know you will have a buff for at least 1 hour if you continue to play on that map even if others also join. Other players can no longer instantly remove your buff, by WP’ing at the last moment of a tick.

Individuals or commanders who choose to “open up” an Outnumbered map get a bonus for a significant period of time while the population builds.

I’ve tried to think how this might be abused. I guess you could have some comms who deliberately move their parties between outnumbered maps, but really that should be a good thing – leaving room for others on more popular maps.

It will be easier to gain this buff if playing on an underpopulated server and people may switch servers for this reason. Again, though, I can’t see why this would be a bad thing.

I guess you would have some karma farm commanders, possibly with full map blobs, trying to move between maps to benefit from the buff, but a) I don’t think the majority of WvW commanders or players would be interested in such a farm b) it is little different to current karma trains, except with the benefit that they are always moving to maps away from the action – they will not be taking up space on ‘fighting maps’ c) It could be managed by adjusting the pip incentive (although I promised this thread was not about pip counts!).

Maybe I’ve missed something and there is a good reason why this is a bad idea. Maybe there are a lot of reasons! If I have I’m sure you’ll tell me!

The purpose of the rewards are to attract players back to WvW. As a long time player, that should make you interested in them working to the best of their ability even if you have no personal interest in the rewards.

(BTW, although I hear what you say about committed players not caring about rewards and just playing for the fights and although a lot of us do say just that, a lot, as well as newcomers, I see a lot experienced players playing a hell of a lot more at the moment. Some of us clearly cannot admit we like those shinies!)

ANet, my goodness we all know, are not all wise, all knowing gods in the art of game design. Some rebalancing of their first pass was likely to be needed. Would you have complained if the buff and been 3 from the start? Would you have accepted a reduction to 5 if it had been 7 to start?

The buff is great I agree, but right now I feel it is too strong and the disparity in points, especially for new players is discouraging joining in with the real game in favour of ‘unhealthy’ behaviour.

PIPs acquisition have to be revised

Jong.5937

There’s nothing wrong with pips. My cousin finished the Diamond chest late Monday.

Maybe this was /s, but if not….. If he/she was max ranked on a winning server playing outnumbered that would be about 8 hours playtime. If he/she was a new player on a losing server it would be 120 hours, which is by some considerable margin, literally……impossible! For most players, averaging maybe 4 pips a tick (he was playing before the change to commitment bonus) that’s 30 hours and that would be pretty unhealthy in 3 days, not so great in a week. The same average player could more than halve that time by hanging around in spawn and killing a guard every 5 mins, rather than actually playing the game! The new player could reduce his time from 120 hrs to 24 (less than the average player, playing normally) by ‘spawn farming’.

The figures are a bit different now with the new, easy to get, commitment bonus, but not that significantly.

I actually think pips and the whole Skirmish Chest system is great, but some adjustments to narrow the disparities seems sensible.

I agree that these skins and the legendary backpack shouId carry ‘prestige’, as much as that is possible in a game(!) and should not just turn into another 2-week Living Story grind for shinies! However…… I don’t think it’s unreasonable to debate if Anet quite have this right so far.

Personally, I’d take 2 points away from ‘Outnumbered’ and give 2 more to everyone by a 5/4/3 Skirmish reward.

Outnumbered is just too strong at the moment. Why, if I was a PvE player, trying out WvW would I spend my time learning this very different game mode for 1-3 Pips (2-4 with commitment bonus) when I can get 6-8 (7-9 with commitment) hanging out in spawn and capping a camp or killing a guard every 5 mins! That’s a 500% pip bonus for a new player on a losing server :0.

The vet bonus is also ‘very strong’ at the moment. It is fair that those of us who have sunk years into this game should get something back, even if some of those vets cheesed their rank in EoTM. But I think an extra 7 pips would still be a fair reward if a new player was getting a minimum of 3. This huge difference in the rate of earning Pips also leads to some of the ‘misunderstandings’ between vets and newcomers over the time needed to get the new rewards!

Others might suggest a different way of adjusting the rewards, but there has been enough life in this debate to suggest it is not just going to ‘go away’, before something is done.

Lower the Rank Requirement for Armor

in WvW

Posted by: Jong.5937

Jong.5937

I think you should have all WvW archievment to get the T3 armor ( Maybe exept Ultimate Dominator).

My view is both armor requirements and Pip bonus should be based off the number of WvW AP points and not rank.

AP points are not a perfect measure either, but at least it gives reasonable credit to roamers and defenders as well as zerg runners. WvW rank is totally devalued as a measure of WvW commitment. Many ranks were grinded in EoTM, pre-nerf, it still favors blob-play over other time spent in WvW and can be “boosted”.

Golem Rush

in WvW

Posted by: Jong.5937

Jong.5937

I was there on the Piken side and this is true:

I suspect the comm on PS was bored and was making golems for fun and a rush.

Just simply looking to try something different in a dead matchup and alpha golems were a bit of fun. Tbh we so heavily outnumbered you it was just a matter of choosing how we would take down those keeps. “Clever” tactics would not have made any difference. I’m sure we would have preferred good fights on any border or EBG, but without those this was “an alternative”. Not a great one for either side.

This is not to criticise either of our opponents. It was only a few weeks ago Piken was suffering with low numbers – what goes around comes around and will do again! And earlier in the week we had some good fights, especially with SFR. But now SFR and Abaddon have understandably given up and much of the day it’s hard to find something to keep people entertained!

The real problem is this:

Piken Square had no reason to be put in the same bracket with our servers.

Last week Piken won an even more absurd number of skirmishes and according to Millenium we were gaining 124 ranking pts (pretty much unheard of at the end of the week!) and leaping to position 4 in the table. Then the new matchups came out and it seems no one in Europe had their ranking changed at all. Instead of a matchup with Riverside and FSP (which would have been “tough”!) or Deso, we ended up still 7 in the table and traded 3rd place Gandara for 9th place SFR. Crazy! Here we are again gaining 80+ ranking pts and feeling a little frustrated. Hopefully Anet will change the rankings this week and things will get more challenging!

ps. The opposite is happening to Gandara, who Millenium calculated were down 90 ranking pts last week and are down almost 100 pts this week. The only thing that kinda saved their matchup is they got picked to play two much lower ranked servers.

- more PvE’ers follow this forum and vote in WvW polls than “real WvW players”.
- People voted for DBL despite the fact a majority of them hated it because of their altruistic desire to provide a map for the few

Really…….really, they are both so laughable it’s not worth commenting on. You just have to accept that your view of who “real WvW players” are was, and is, wrong.

More Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy stuff following minutes after the demolition of Arthur Dent’s house!
———-

“‘People of Earth, your attention please,’ a voice said, and it was wonderful. Wonderful perfect quadraphonic sound with distortion levels
so low as to make a brave man weep.

‘This is Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz of the Galactic Hyperspace Planning Council,’ the voice continued. ‘As you will no doubt be aware, the
plans for development of the outlying regions of the Galaxy require the building of a hyperspatial express route through your star system, and
regrettably your planet is one of those scheduled for demolition. The process will take slightly less than two of your Earth minutes. Thank you.’

The PA died away.
Uncomprehending terror settled on the watching people of Earth. The terror moved slowly through the gathered crowds as if they were iron filing on
a sheet of board and a magnet was moving beneath them. Panic sprouted again, desperate fleeing panic, but there was nowhere to flee to.

Observing this, the Vogons turned on their PA again. It said:

‘There’s no point acting all surprised about it. All the planning charts and demolition orders have been on display in your local planning
department in Alpha Centauri for fifty of your Earth years, so you’ve had plenty of time to lodge any formal complaint and it’s far too late to start
making a fuss about it now.’

The PA fell silent again and its echo drifted off across the land. The huge ship turned slowly in the sky with easy power. On the underside of each a
hatchway opened, an empty black square.

By this time somebody somewhere must have manned a radio transmitter, located a wavelength and broadcast a message back to the Vogon ships,
to plead on behalf of the planet. Nobody ever heard what they said, they only heard the reply. The PA slammed back into life again. The voice was
annoyed. It said:

‘What do you mean you’ve never been to Alpha Centauri? For heaven’s sake mankind, it’s only four light years away you know. I’m sorry, but if
you can’t be bothered to take an interest in local affairs that’s your own lookout.

‘Energize the demolition beams.’

Light poured out of the hatchways.

‘I don’t know’ said the voice on the PA, ‘apathetic bloody planet, I’ve no sympathy at all.’ It cut off.

There was a terrible ghastly silence.
There was a terrible ghastly noise.
There was a terrible ghastly silence.

The Vogon Constructor Fleet coasted away into the inky starry void.”

On the (somehow overlooked) plans to demolish his house

MISTER PROSSER:
But Mister Dent the plans have been available in the planning office for the last nine months!

ARTHUR DENT:
Yes! I went round to find them yesterday afternoon. You’d hadn’t exactly gone out of your way to pull much attention to them have you? I mean, like actually telling anybody or anything.

MISTER PROSSER:
The plans were on display.

ARTHUR DENT:
Ah! And how many members of the public are in the habit of casually dropping around the local planning office of an evening?

MISTER PROSSER:
Er – ah!

ARTHUR DENT:
It’s not exactly a noted social venue is it? And even if you had popped in on the off chance that some raving bureaucrat wanted to knock your house down, the plans weren’t immediately obvious to the eye were they?

MISTER PROSSER:
That depends where you were looking.

ARTHUR DENT:
I eventually had to go down to the cellar!

MISTER PROSSER:
That’s the display department.

ARTHUR DENT:
With a torch!

MISTER PROSSER:
The lights, had… probably gone.

ARTHUR DENT:
So had the stairs!

MISTER PROSSER:
Well you found the notice didn’t you?

ARTHUR DENT:
Yes. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet, stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying “Beware of the Leopard”. Ever thought of going into advertising? _

It has always felt wrong that cannons can be on 5% health and be next to useless on the next attack, with no way to fix during downtime, even if you have plenty of supply. With ACs etc., you can normally build another, unless siege capped, and probably should have to.

A lot of people, me included, were not happy with the 1st version of the DBl and fortunately Anet listened, changed the maps and accelerated the work on bringing the ABls back into the rotation and that is all good.

However, then, a very vocal, subset of the community, that has now been proven to be in a clear minority, whipped themselves into a frenzy of hate and lost all sense of perspective. Fortunately Anet didn’t just fold under the pressure but instead conducted a proper poll.

WvW Poll 14 June: Desert Borderlands (Closed)

in WvW

Posted by: Jong.5937

Jong.5937

If DBL has the following:

1. Keep home map WPs, that must be earned through upgrades, in East and West keeps. Any team can get them, providing they put in the upgrade work.
2. Adjust towers surrounding those keeps (and Garrison) on DBL so that they have the ability to be used as a point of attack (ie. trebs can hit the keeps from towers — and keeps can hit the towers).
3. Keep gimmicks out of the centre map, please oh please. Having a contested WP in centre — a single building or squared-out holding space, that any team can get the WP would be fine enough. No gimmicks, just simple. Heck, bring back the bloodlust points instead of the WP, those were fine too.

It doesn’t matter that the DBL map is bigger if the above is in place. In fact it gives a certain advantage defensively to the lowest-ranked server in the tier.

Use of 2 alpine, 1 dbl + eb I think would satisfy most — where dbl goes to the lowest ranked server (motivation to stay with that map and reduce ppt to keep it, or motivation to ppt to get a different map, depending on your preference).

I might be wrong but I’m pretty sure 1. is already done.

2. I agree. If it’s too hard to move the towers I suggested elsewhere a new fixed long-range weapon, just for those towers, that can hit the outer walls of Garri, has to be built like a treb, maybe can be “upgraded” to be 2 or 3 times as powerful, like multiple trebs and which can be countered/destroyed from outside the tower.

3. I agree. I suggested, again elsewhere, a simplified walled arena, for big open field fights (emulating the fights people like in SM), that, when held, gives a WP and (maybe!) some other buffs, like the bloodlust points. I thought it could be a quarry, with faster supply benefits to those that hold it, but I’d be happy if we dropped that bit and just had the WP!

We were EU T1 at the time (now is another matter!) and we rarely had queues, even in EB, post HoT!

But I would argue it’s you missing the point (and the Poll results agree):

a) After HoT, with all the PvE stuff being done, there were simply not enough people for 4 maps. People focused on EB to get a decent population (that’s what I did!).

b) Because of a), if you ended up on the DBl it was inevitably empty.

c) The maps were horrid to be in, partially because they were empty.

This led to a self-perpetuating impression that the DBls were hated and they were hated partially because they were empty! It was a vicious circle of hate and despair! When the population returned, after the mid-April changes, many found great fun the the DBls. Their queues were almost as big as the ABls, when they came back, and bigger than the queues now, or just before HoT, although, the die-hard haters didn’t really give them a chance and some (a clear minority), I accept clearly still do just want to play ABl.

Now I am not saying those maps were not flawed when they were released, but the changes Anet have made have already largely fixed those problems. Could they be further improved? Yes! But is the answer to dump them and start again, with possibly another 2 years of playing only the ABLs…….. absolutely not!

WvW Poll 14 June: Desert Borderlands (Closed)

The last time the DBLs were used, EB would have a queue and the DBLs would be virtually empty. People zoned alright. They zoned right out of WvW.

This has been debated to death:

a) Whilst it is clear a vocal minority hated the DBLs that much, it is not at all clear that was why they were so empty. All the other HoT changes and activity (Guild Hall, mastery, specialisation, Reverent grinding, to name but a few) definitely caused WvW to hollow out and it is not surprising, with reduced numbers that those remaining chose to gather on one map out of 4.

b) Even if the original state of the DBLs didn’t help (and I do agree the original maps were frustrating to move around) it is not at all clear that it is true of the current maps. The DBLs were all queued after April 19th. The “vocal minority” said it “was just because people were preparing for the ABLs”!! This always sounded like confirmation bias and the current poll confirms that.

and finally……. c) Participation seem to have plummeted again after only about 4-6 weeks of activity. Not down to post-HoT levels, but to unhealthy levels, none the less. The ABLs were not a magic bullet. Those of us who remember the state of the game before HoT knew that. HoT was the final nail, but the game was already stale and in decline.

The game needs more variety and innovation not less. The Poll proves beyond doubt that this is the opinion of a significant majority. Case closed.

short answer is server stacking. As soon as the tournaments were announced, people banded together to stack servers in each of the divisions to win the ‘better loots’.

If tournaments were the issue, how come it’s still happening. It’s a problem but tournaments were not the cause and cancelling them is doubly not a solution, IMO.

Whens the next WvW tournament?

Yes, I’m not sure why they said the tournaments were damaging in the long term. I really can’t think of a reason for that. Anyone?

Look at your server?

:D good dig, but I still don’t get it. At the risk of getting the thread locked(!) Yes, very bad week this week. Although, interestingly, until last night we were still winning by kills and kill ratios and that is still really tight (http://wvwintel.com/#2010).

But otherwise we have, anyway, been deliberately trying to avoid nightcapping and the top international server spot as it just leads to bandwagoning and poor fights. At one point last year it was just about impossible to get any fights in the borders because we were so dominant and, if we didn’t try really hard, almost all keeps but enemy garri’s were ours and T3.

However, even if you disregard all that, I don’t know what the tournaments have got to do with any of it.

Have a once a year “transfer window” and Anet then set alliances when it’s closed . Yes, I know people can create new accounts, but it should help a lot.

FYI, they always said they would eventually rotate the borders. Popular pressure made them move fast to make this happen. They still say they intend to swap between the two borders (they have hinted it may be a 3 monthly cycle although no one really seems happy with that!).

The view of a substantial number, it’s true, although a lot of those still justify that view by referring to problems pre-19th April. But it’s not universal. And no one group gets to define what is WvW.

Personally, I like both and will enjoy the change when the DBls return. Not to say they are perfect! I still hope they remove some of the mobility problems around the north of the map, give the north towers a purpose to fight over and find a good use for the centre of the map on both Bls! (although if they haven’t found a solution to that in 4 years it may be a pipe dream!)

It’s not because we wanted a new map to change from ABL that we want DBL who is a very very poor designed map with too much gimmick and pve stuff ! I just remember that stupid oasis event…. This event was removed because of lag, not because he was BS !
DBL is not a good answer to WvW stillness.

Really, please stop bringing things up that are no longer part of the map. All it does is make it sound like you were so set against the DBl because of it’s original (yes, very frustrating) state, you are unable to judge the current map. The same when people talk about how empty it was and was just for karma training.

The only comments that matter were people’s experiences after the 19th April. Yes, I realise some still hated them, that much is very clear. But every time someone starts by talking about empty maps and features that are now removed it just makes the opinion redundant.

If we threw things away and started again everytime someone initially released a flawed map or feature we would never get any new content!

If they have been listening to this thread at all they won’t go ahead with the time based scoring modifier! To be fair, even originally, they recognised its contentiousness and said they would only do if they had to. I think there are straight forward ways of measuring and rewarding actual activity, at whatever time, without resorting to such crude and detrimental systems.

An occasional video is nice and all, but it really it is getting to the point that this is just advertising your youtube channel.

For those who are at work or do not want to leave site, you be better to just let them know what you have to say here.

Well thank you for listening to our opinions, it’s nice to see Anet looking for feedback.

I do however have concerns about this poll. The “Adjust scoring to be relative to current activity and population (Large)” option should have been left off this poll. As it was previous announced as a controversial maybe it really shouldn’t be the first priority.

Another person who misinterpreted the options (not your fault!). Anet please take note and repoll.

YUP, they said the DBLs were too. How you like ’em Alpines? You do not change things by shutting up about it.

They said at the start they wanted to rotate them. They just took their fine time about it. I accept all the complaints got changes to the maps and Alpine brought back earlier than it would otherwise.

The devs would have better luck starting from scratch.

For something that probably took up to 2 years to develop I just find that really sad!

With the changes they have made its makes an interesting and different map to fight in, on rotation. I honestly don’t think you have given it a chance after the changes. To throw it all away and be stuck with the same 4 year old maps for maybe another 2 would just be really sad.

(So true I said it twice!)

I don’t mind, at the moment. I have a stack of them and it’s nice to get a good stash of shards. But soon shards will be like badges were – I will have tens of thousands I don’t use! And I’m going to get mighty bored having to use my mouse to say “yes” every time I want to convert them!

new scoring poll. uh, k?

Jong.5937

37.8%

Adjust scoring to be relative to current activity and population (Large)

That means if you are playing at the time you posted this your efforts do not matter as much as the next guy. Activity level is not determined by your actual activity level. It is determined by a predetermined 6 hour period.

….. And, they have said, ppk is included in the same category.

This poll is, sadly, just very messed up and won’t help Anet at all!
