I agreed people shouldn’t turn the game into a grind. I disagreed that ticking wasn’t really worth it because everything gets flushed anyway! But, I don’t think you really meant it as it sounded to me, so sorry if I offended.

Yes, no one should sit in a fort ticking siege (really why we want the timers changed!), but not ticking it at all is really unfair (putting it politely) to those who spend hard earned dosh (very hard earned in WvW. Roll on the 28/5 patch!) on upgrades and the siege itself.

The ultimate extension of the first part of your argument is no one should buy upgrades either! We should all just run around like nutcases swapping towers!

A couple of pieces of well placed siege can be life or death even to a T3 tower, buying time for a response, but who wants to place it? Currently they need to know they are going to be around for hours to babysit it themselves, and as everyone, including you, says, that’s no fun! If they place it and leave they can be sure it will vanish in 30 mins unless the fort is ‘lucky’ enough to get attacked!

End result, few place precautionary siege so those that spend money on upgrades have to do it a lot more than they might otherwise. Now I’m sure that doesn’t matter to those who run with the zerg and never buy upgrades or defensive siege (not saying that’s you!) but……

Example: Earlier today a kind soul from a guild new to our server placed 2 ACs at each inner gate of SM – a not insubstantial investment. He called out in map chat for people to tick it. 45 mins later it was all gone. Not fair on him or those upgrading SM!

You make good points. But even when patrolling between Aldon’s and Jerrifer, for example, it is easy to not tap siege for 15+ mins. Then, say, something actually happens at one of them and you need to “hold the fort”. It is still incredibly easy to not get back in the 10-15 mins you have remaining.

And although the grind is the same for all servers, so is the cost when we fail. It is another thing that makes WvW a very costly hobby in the world of GW2 and a real disincentive to properly protecting towers. Of course those who like the constant kitten-for-tat of capping towers might be happy and so may be Anet, when all those T3 towers get flushed for lack of any preventative siege! But I’m not sure it is fair on those who invest, already for scant reward, in tower upgrades.

I guess also, on our server, I have not seen this saboteur problem, but I do see the tapping problem, so I would vote for easing the timer to 1hr and see. Remember in my proposal the timer would only be reduced INSIDE towers. Outside I actually propose we have a shorter timer. It would take fairly ballsy saboteurs to completely build, not just drop, siege inside a fort! Not saying it wont happen, but not sure how much of a real problem it would be.

The point is that even if you are guarding or patrolling you will get called to help out elsewhere, when it is so so easy to not make it back in 30 mins. Or, god forbid you go off for a meal without cover!

If this was an intentional piece of gameplay I could maybe accept it. But as has been pointed out this was introduced to solve the problem of hitting the siege cap. The idea was to not de-spawn active siege and 30 mins is a somewhat arbitrary figure that in practice creates a horrible grind.

A change to 1hr for normal siege (in a tower) and, yes, 2hrs for superior siege, makes sense and would make it so much more likely that desired siege would not accidentally de-spawn, which is Anet’s stated intention.

Tagging when outmanned is NOT the problem. Even when “manned” siege is not tagged, or the people who are tagging get into a battle that distracts them for just long enough to lose hours of dedication.

The timers for siege in towers need increasing full stop and I believe that could be largely “funded” by more rapidly despawning offensive siege in the field, that often sit outside of gates/walls for a long time after a tower is capped.

Hey guys, just want to put this out there, but having to tick siege every 30m just isn’t fun.

Signed! Totally agree.

What’s worse is you do this very not fun task for a couple of hours dilligently, then get called to some big battle somewhere. Run back to your corner as fast as you can to find all that siege you worked so hard to maintain WIPED!! Changing the timer even to 1 hour would make a huge difference to this.

Here’s what you do. Ticking siege is still necessary, but the problem is we still need troll, and unused siege to despawn. So, place siege, build it, and give it a 30 min despawn timer. If said siege get ticked repeatedly in a relatively short period of time (with an internal cooldown between ticks, say 5-10 mins), by a few different players, then the debuff on said siege gets an extended timer. That way, initially, useful siege in tower/keeps that’s being/going to be manned will, over a small fraction of time, will gain long two hour despawn timers. Meanwhile siege put off in obscure places won’t be able to achieve this without a group of trolls investing a sizable amount of time (relative for individual players) to do so.

Its a smart idea but I don’t think it would work, at least on our server. Very few players tag siege at all unless in battle. Those that do try hard until something like the above happens.

I’d suggest the following:

- Double the timer on all siege inside forts
- Halve the timer (or even cut to 10 mins) for all siege OUTSIDE of forts.

I don’t know, but I’d estimate a full half of all siege placed at any time must be rams on gates. If you also add cats and a few ballistas in open field then drastically cutting the timer on these would go a long way to compensating for increased timers inside forts. There may be a very modest increase in total siege placed but hopefully nothing they could not cope with.

It is very rare for offensive siege, other than inside forts to go unused for ANY length of time. 10 mins should be fine.

The AC is meant to help the outmanned servers. But it has the side effect of actually helping the stacked server. It’s now virtually impossible to take a fully upgraded keep unless you are stacked.

Reminds me of the Orb of Power disaster. How long is it before Anet finally decided to do something about it. 3-4 months before the patch to eliminate the Orb of Power.

So you can expect to wait that long before this finally gets some attention, and a few more months before it is resolved.

Devon has said they have a quick change already in testing and close to release. Let’s see.

Siege weapons should be for breaking down walls and doors, not damaging other players.

Really! How would this ever work? A small well dug in defensive force with well placed siege should absolutely be able to hold out against even a large mob of derpers.

We could argue that a ram especially should reduce damage for the person on it (some kind of cover), but siege that doesn’t affect players out in the open??

I was semi-ok with the AC buff……until tonight. I sieged up NE keep on our bl the best i could, only to have everything taken down in seconds by ac’s. And my siege was even placed out of reach – i thought. All that time and money/badges wasted. Safe to say i lost all will to do wvw after that. I’d say it’s time for a damage reduction.

I know. Terrible. There are several ways for them to correct the AC mess. Any of these solutions will work:

1. The AC buff only turns on for outmanned servers. Every other server it’s reverted to pre patch.
2. Damage for AC is reduced by 50%. Range reduced. Damage to siege reduced 80%.
3. AC cost is jacked way up.
4. AC’s only last 10 minutes before they disappear.

Doing something to reduce the overwhelming power of the zerg was good, but they did too much too fast.

But I say just reduce siege damage to pre-buff levels and remove the ridiculous 40% range boost for @L1 Arrowcart wXP trait. This latter change makes all ballistas and all but the best placed cats in range of ACs. Many cat sites, probably carefully chosen by the map designers are now unusable. It’s a mystery why most L1 traits give 1% boost in damage/resistance, then this comes in with 40%.

Yeah, the fact it is easy for some and impossible for others does make it a poor system and Anet are changing it. There are several posts on this, but this was in the last week

We are currently in the process of taking some steps to alleviate this. Both on the stagnant match side and on the server color side.

But I still say none of this really affects RoF (unless the argument is that these POIs should just be trivially easy). You have been and will shortly probably be again, the top server in your tier and in that position your server will have ample opportunity to capture these POIs, even if at odd times of the day.

Being blue makes it easy of course, but if you dominate your tier you should win blue keeps at some times during the week (and even if not). I get your pain, RoS had not been blue for a long time when I was trying for map completion. I was missing Durios, Bravost and Valley for a few weeks, but then in the early hours one day we captured them all and the job was done!

A sense of achievement instead of an easy inevitability, if we had been blue

(But, anyway, as the other poster said, it looks like Anet plan to rotate colours in future anyway).

I do and I don’t get this frustration. There are some servers in some tiers (mainly top and bottom) who probably really do have a tough time. But I don’t get why WvW map completion, which already has a far, far fewer number of PoIs than PvE, needs to be easy! It seems PvE’ers just want to get the WvW bit over with quickly, but WvW focused players have no such option!

And RoF tiered up only 2 weeks ago and may be top dog in your tier again next week You are not stuck permanently in a tier where you cannot compete and capture other keeps.

A league could’ve possibly worked out if paid server transfers were in from the start. The populations are so unbalanced at the moment that I don’t really see it working out.

Might still work if we divide EU and NA into 3 leagues each, instead of tiers of 3. Everyone plays everyone else in every combo, then top 2 up, bottom 2 down. You are only playing teams across 3 of the old tiers and get a lot more variety.

Commander tags could have different selectable modes:

- current “Zerg”/ “platoon” mode.
- non-Zerg, say “General” mode (as in rank), which means don’t Zerg on me, but I know what I’m talking about, listen to me if giving orders in a castle/keep etc. means multiple commanders can have a tag up, without confusing the Zerg.
- “patrol” mode – private group – tag only visible on map to those who join, but player name has special icon, similar to map completion icon – maybe limit size to 25-30

And while we are at it, give each of the above some identifier in chat, so people know who to really listen too.

Totally agree this needs a bit of a rethink. As others have said this is a pure grind that many are not up for. The few that are, do it for hours then get called to defend a keep or SM and by the time they get back all that siege they were protecting. has gone! It’s horrid.

If the main goal is to solve the technical problem then I agree – shorter time for offensive siege, that is normally abandoned after use and longer for defensive.

Could you not have different timers for ACs and cats and rams (and even trebs) placed outside forts to those inside? 15 mins outside, 1 hour inside (agree even longer for superior). You could also clear all defensive siege from inside a fort automatically when it is captured (or after 5 mins to allow for immediate recapture).

Confirm this bug with my ranger. like the “cannot drop bundles” bug this is an absolute disaster during a tower attack! I just stand there taking AoE with skills doing nothing! It is NOT skill lag. Skill icon does not flash, never triggers, never does anything until you find a “suitable” different location. Even moving along wall often not always solve.

Seems to be since 30th Apr patch.

Just wanted to say thanks to GH for the last few weeks, I know we tend to have forum brawls but the WvW has been more fun and balanced then Rof had had in a long time. I never expected I’d ever say this, but I’ll miss GH.

And farewell to RoF! You put up an awesome midweek fight and I find the rating system incredibly unjust at times.

I sure hope we long-term Surmians are not destined to an Icarian fate as some GH, RoF suspect and even some RoS fear! Hey we may yet have another matchup in the months to come

Explain? I’m Interested. I’m just concerned to not see people trapped in servers that die (or never lived!). The 6 months figure is flexible. Make it once a year if you like, although I personally think that may be too restrictive. The idea is it is frequent enough to stop people feeling trapped, but infrequent enough that it does not cause chaos with rankings.

The recent Anet free transfer period, if repeated, I think causes the latter, with sudden big shifts, instead of a constant trickle.

To sumarise this thread(!):

IF you are not stuck in the bottom tier(!), this:

As a DR commander I can say that we cap all those POI’s at least once every couple days, just spend a little more time checking up on wvw. At least you’re not tier 1 where people wait weeks.

Or just wait until your server switches to the colour on the side of the map you’re waiting for.

If you are not prepared to wait to change colours then try playing out of hours – do a few night shifts. Get your own group of 5 or 6 players and you will be surprised what you can cap at 3AM. Or you will find every few days your night-capping team will do it for you!

I was stuck with 99% completion for a couple of weeks, but one day we ran rampant over EB in the early hours and the job was done. And, BTW, a few weeks later and we are playing the colour I needed anyway

If all this sounds like hard work then I am afraid:

let’s be honest…part of the reason why the WvW stuff was included in map completion was to encourage/force players to idk…PLAY WVW. There’s no hearts…there isn’t tons of sp’s like Orr, its designed to force you to participate in WvW at least a little bit. The only one’s that should be difficult to obtain are the ones in EB…and thats just because SM and the Keeps don’t flip THAT often. But the rest of the bl’s stuff flip’s often enough over the course of a week or two that it’s easily possible to get map completion on the other bl’s. If you want to go in and have 0 intention of actually doing WvW, just wanna PvE ur POI’s/Vista’s/SP’s in the bls, then the problem isn’t the dev’s, it’s that you are doing things contrary to the purpose of them including it in map completion. There’s a reason you need badges of honor AND map completion for a legendary…its not a coincidence.

I cant finish map completion because of the 340+ bloody heart quests that I would have to do.

Map completion is not supposed to be easy. you need to complete the different elements of the game.

But for those in the bottom tier with no hope capping other corner towers I do get your pain. I do think Anet should allow one free transfer every 6 months (or so), starting with one free transfer when you buy the game. It DOES seem unfair that people, especially those who find they love WvW, but also those unable to get map completion, have to “pay to play” (at least in the way other servers do) just because of their choice of server at the start. I would guess many noobs to the game would think a low/med population server was a GOOD thing when starting out and WvW may not be something they researched deeply when choosing. I did think about specifically allowing transfers from the bottom tier servers, so WvW fans can get out, but I think that might really doom those servers to a perpetual bottom tier fate. My suggestion may do the same, but its less likely and I think fairer. it also allows T1 players to move to get less queueing/lag, but keeps moves to a level that it doesn’t throw the balance constantly into confusion!

I agree. The lag and constant disconnects on Ruins of Surmia are driving me mad and very nearly making me give up. Personal story elements are unplayable – lag and you’re dead, or, maybe even worse(!), complete 90% of the objective and get bounced out of the instance or off the server altogether and have to do it all again. All the time your armour is getting weaker and weaker. You end up spending bronze to jump back to a waypoint for repairs, then for the repairs themselves and none of it your fault.

EDIT: Jumped to conclusions. Following tips above I rebooted my router and all was good. Sorry!
