Don’t be discouraged by the levelling, things start to tie together after you hit level 40 – a whole lot of useful traits come knocking at your door.
Use the levelling period to learn your class, it’s actually more fun than it sounds.
- OP cries that the forum gives him cancer
- Then proceeds to claim that there is no evidence for the ranger complaints to be valid
- OP lives in a dreamworld and thinks that devs don’t know how bad they messed up ranger class and they are just cowards to come in forum and talk about it
- OP is thinks people don’t see that he is just bad obvious trollOP pls…
Wow. I’m not sure where you got that from, but I really just wanted to know of any bugs/flaws that I didn’t know about or haven’t come across… and also anything that’s remotely (and currently) enjoyable that involves the ranger. More than anything I want to see these things in video, not in words.
There are some people who have posted evidence, some have not. I’m calling out to those who haven’t so I can better understand.
When did I say ANet devs weren’t aware of our problems?
Do us all a favour and go kitten yourself up the kitten this is no place for dick heads like you to stretch your kitten.
This forum gives me cancer. Cancer of the balls.
It’s because we have what appear to be great arguments for and against the ranger class, but little evidence to prove it. I want to be proven wrong and I want to better understand this class, despite the frustrations I have with it.
I invite you to upload your ranger videos with a little explanation of what you’re demonstrating. Whether it be showing a build you’ve enjoyed, useful techniques, a flaw/bug, PvE/WvW/PvP, general frustrations… it doesn’t matter as long as it’s constructive and helpful to the rest of us. More importantly it provides a chance for the Devs to see what you’re on about, instead of having to decipher your page -long rants (as merited as they might be).
Begin!
You seem like a nice person, so I’m going to suggest you look at other classes. Any other class, it doesn’t matter. Just not this one.
Run and never look back.
I have often joked that I would quit my ranger and play my other geared professions, but I’ve invested so much into him before becoming aware of these mounting problems.
To me, the ranger class is like a red-headed step child. I’ve raised him as my own and dismissing him would be throwing away X amount of gold and time.
I’ll need another 40ms to properly respond to this thread.
I’ll be back in a week.
Hey guys, started a mesmer as an alt and was really proud of the name.
Just curious what any of yall have thought of!
The name I chose is “Multiple Mesgasms”
Heh. I had a warrior named Multiple Charrgazms. I was asked to rename him by ANet mods lol so expect a little message from them in-game shortly.
Renaming toons was actually effortless and done at the character selection screen… which makes me think character rename tokens might be a possibility in the TP in the future.
I named my mesmer ‘Seras of Hellsing’, from Hellsing manga/anime.
I immediately regret it because she really needs to be a rifle warrior to fit the persona lol. I can haz character rename plz?
5. DPS on longbow so that other longbow classes can stop laughing at us.
There is only one other class that has a longbow. Stop trying to be a warrior and remeber part of our damage comes from our pets. So you will never see the number that you get from a warrior. To be a ranger good is to know and accept this. If you dont your just lying to yourself.
In the defense of the OP, he copied/pasted that from my rant in the Ranger Update thread. I was actually referring to all bow classes, regardless of bow type.
I agree that our pets are a core part of our DPS (I don’t like it but I can’t argue with core mechanics, even if I don’t agree with them), but I feel we are TOO dependent on them and unfortunately a lot of the problems that come from our pets brings light to our other class issues – in this case, raw bow damage.
You can argue that we offer conditions from our bow attacks and shouldn’t whine about damage output. The underlying problem here is that other classes can do all of the above more efficiently and more easily than the ranger. I can go into details but everyone has read the same BS over and over again.
Hi again Osicat, just wondering if it would be possible to somehow incorporate the Greatsword into either builds 3.1, 3.2 or 3.3. I’m finding it hard to decide because of the defensive options you get with sword/x + staff, but I have Vision of the Mists GS and I want to use it lol. What traits would you recommend too?
Thanks
Hey, I personally wouldn’t invest karma into armour because a) it’s expensive and b) dungeon armour is more easily attainable. Unless of course you specifically wanted the Orr karma skins.
Fay.2735 created this thread, it should help you decide on a build and assist you with gear, stats and runes/sigils.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/List-Find-your-Mesmer-Build-Guides
It looks like you’re going with full zerker gear so I would recommend trying one of the shatter builds.
To the OP – now you have two great sides of the argument and now you can make up your own mind lol. Meanwhile the rest of us will have to agree to disagree.
I do wholeheartedly agree with Trollhammer.7439 in saying that anything that we can do, another class can do better and more efficiently.
On the contrary I agree with the pro-rangers that we need to stop comparing ourselves to warriors, after all, if you wanted everything the warrior offered then the obvious solution is to roll a warrior – but that’s hardly the point here.
Sorry Antonello, you’re going to get one from me lol:
Rangers are very useful in dungeons.
1) Healing Spring. Enough said. Solid healing, but unlike the Engi’s turret it’s invincible.
No doubt a useful skill for condition removal.
2) Solid DPS.
To those who agree with this, you are saying it is ‘solid, sustainable DPS’. Yeah, it’s sustainble, alright. Sustainably low. Seriously go try another class and do some tests on dummies in Heart of the Mists. Then come back here and cry.
3) Pets. Useful in support or to distract a boss. If he just soaks up a few hits that your Warrior or Guardian doesn’t have to take, he’s done his job. Also each pet has various special abilities that can be used in support or in attack.
LOL “If he just soaks up a few hits that your Warrior or Guardian doesn’t have to take, he’s done his job.” <—- Yeah no, lol. It will have done its job if it is responsive, has decent AI to step away from AoEs, hits moving targets more efficiently and doesn’t agro the entire world.
4) Range! Very important in PVE
What good is range if we are presented with a plethora of issues with our short bow and long bow? Oh no wait, we’ll use axes. But it has a shorter range requirement.. and the 5 axe bleeding thingo requires you to be close for the full effect………
TL;DR: Your argument in invalid. I’m open to being proven wrong, in fact I’m hoping one of you will prove me wrong but so far all of you who are FOR rangers are coming up with arguments that have no basis.
ps: sorry to state the obvious again but I feel it needs to be said out loud to you devs so that you don’t stuff up GW3 – Never, ever make anything a core element of any profession/class. Even if pets worked properly and fantastically, what if I didn’t want to use a pet? Now you’re stuck with a profession that is forced to use a broken mechanic as part of its core functionality. Well done. To whom do I mail this nobel prize to?
Yep, I now have a warrior and mesmer geared out and I can honestly see the diversity in builds with both classes VERY easily. Both are also quite fun to experiment with, personally I love switching between a berserker shatter build and a confusion/condition damage stacking build with the mesmer.
After 6 months I still don’t feel comfortable with the ranger class in any build (I speak exclusively with PvE/dungeons, not PvP). I spec in power and crit dmg/berserker gear, I produce laughable amounts of damage. I then spec in condition dmg/toughess with the same gear and try a condition build – still crap compared to other class’ condition builds (and WHY the hell does the short bow bleed ONLY WORK WHEN FLANKING?)
I even tried a full BM build – still annoying and sub-par as long as the pet skills are non-responsive. So yeah, after a very expensive parade in trying different exotic gear/builds, my ranger is now only good for holding my surplus items from other toons.
What a sad state of affairs.
- Fix pet F2 responsiveness.
- Fix pet AoE survivability.
- Fix pet AI so that they don’t run off to random, far-away targets.
- Explain the 40ms shortbow nerf and why each shortbow#1 attack is a lot longer than 40ms.
- Adjust dps on longbow so that other longbow classes can stop laughing at us.
- Explain why BM traits are scattered everywhere instead of the BM tree.
- Fix ‘obstructed’ error with bows.
- Regardless of ETAs, can you please tell us that you acknowledge these problems? Everybody understands you can’t fix things with the wave of a wand, but it would mean a lot to everyone if they knew you were aware of these problems. Not saying anything only leaves us to assume that the developers don’t agree with our suggestions – and that’s OK. Just give us confirmation/closure and we’ll stop nagging.
Is that enough for you?
(edited by Moderator)
Sup,
My warrior is stuck with Power/Vitality/Crit Dmg gear with berzerker rings/amulets/necklace. I’m looking for any viable dungeon builds that best utilise the gear previously mentioned. I’m broke and I’m stuck with this gear lol so any suggestions would be awesome. Open to all weapons/runes/traits combinations.
Cheers
Hello? We’re still alive here. ANet, JonPeters, anyone?
Can you guys link some axe/mace and axe/shield builds for dungeoning? Been a while since I’ve been on my warrior, keen on trying axe main hand.
Can we please get a response as to how the developers feel about the current state of the ranger, if/when you plan to implement any changes and what you feel is an appropriate ETA?
I don’t like spamming the same kitten thread every day but what other choice do I have? What choice does anyone have?
Hi ANet, fixed ranger yet?
No worries, I’ll come back tomorrow.
Hi again ANet, fixed ranger yet?
No?
That’s cool, I’ll pop by tomorrow.
Oh hai ANet! Just passing through, you know, checking stuffs out, looking at buildz, wondering if you’ve decided to fix the ranger yet or not..
Can this thread just be locked already? It has gone completely off topic.
Hey deepwinter!
How about no.
Hi ANet, fixed ranger yet?
No worries, I’ll come back tomorrow.
Well from a WvW perspective I like those rare occasions where I push someone down a cliff (and it is the only push we have beside longbow).
I like those rare occassions Rangers actually provide something useful to their team, other than comical relief when you tell your team mates what your actual damage is with full zerker gear.
Seriously, 3+ months on and still no major improvements to this awful class.
After creating 2 other professions and maxing/gearing them out, still nothing for the Ranger.
Learn to balance your work load, ANet. The fact that this thread is still being bumped means absolutely no one is letting you forget about this class. So yeah, whenever you’re not busy spending our money and bathing in your money showers, fix your kitten.
Cheers.
I fully endorse this Sniper Shot idea.
ANet – if you give this the green light, I will send you clippings of my hair.
ps: and photos of my pet parrot. His name is Carlos.
Minus the shoulders, that’s great. Thanks!
Hey there, I’m looking for suggestions of a sl*tty, skimpy yet sophisticated light armor set for my sylvari mesmer. I basically want to look like an expensive kitten.
Please post pics and the name of the armor piece/set, all help is appreciated!
How about we allow ANet to fix the shortbow and longbow first….before entertaining the idea of new ranged weapons =P
You know what would be cool? A two-handed slingshot.
Honestly, I wish the Ranger got a ‘finisher/execute’ type move where instead of being a closer like you’d expect for the shortbow, it would be a channeled stationary shot that did immense damage to open the fight.
We do. It’s called Kill Shot.
Wait a minute..
My bad if I misread the OP. I do agree that other classes out-perform others in certain areas, try playing a RANGER and then try playing a ranged Warrior/Thief. You’ll cry like a girl at how better they are with bows in PvE than the Ranger. To my understanding, anything that seems wildly imbalanced will be worked on, just don’t hold your breath because patches and changes require time.
I do personally agree with Ayanavi that the warrior is fairly boring to play unless you find something that you really enjoy. For me, using a rifle sniper build for the Warrior is tonnes of fun, both in PvE and especially in WvW/PvP. For my Mesmer, I’m using Osicat’s Shatter Cat build —> https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/guide-WvWvW-Shatter-cat/page/6) and I’m having a blast. Makes me feel like a terrorist constantly blowing clones up =P
The problem is you’re comparing a heavy armor class to a light armor class. The thing to realise here is that there are several other methods of mitigating/avoiding damage rather than letting your armor absorb the damage. I can go through the pros and cons of each class, PvE and PvP wise, but that’d take forever. Try experimenting with other PvE mesmer builds/armor combinations and you’ll be surprised at how versatile the class really is.
ps: I have a fully geared Warrior, Ranger and Mesmer – so I can compare and contrast these classes pretty well so far.
Hi, let’s cut the BS and get straight into it. I want to look like a high-end, successful and classy prostitute but haven’t had much luck in finding information on gear sets. Don’t really fancy the dungeon sets either unless you are willing to change my mind.
I would realllllly appreciate anyone who can recommend me a gear set with the name of the gear set and screenshots if possible. I basically want to show some skin, but not too much. Basically a high-end, top class hoe is what I’m going for.
Cheers in advance
Hey Osicat, just wanted to say thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. I’ve got a Ranger, Warrior and now finally a Mesmer all geared out and I have to say I’ve enjoyed the Mesmer the most after following your guide. Still need a lot of practise but I’m really liking the burst and control that comes with your build.
I went full glass cannon though and still die quite a bit, maybe it’ll help me learn to be more active in my defensive skills down the track. It cost me about 40 gold all up to gear up with full berserker gear, trinkets, weapons, runes and sigils!!
Frenzy + Killshot = /insert_quote Trinity: “Dodge this.”
Daryl Dixon uses a variation of the bow.
Just sayin’.
and you auto-leap to fleeing targets.
..After you leap away first. Would be logical to leap to the target, then leap away.
It would be nice to get confirmation from a developer if this is intended or not. Some people say it’s a bug, I say it’s the price you pay for having an auto-cripple with the kick part of the chain (although a heavy price at that).
JonPeters? Anyone? Bueller? Bueellleeerrrrrr?
Unfortunately the ranger isn’t a hard-hitting class. I’m not sure what our ‘strengths’ are but hitting hard is certainly not one of them.
I’m going to save you a LOT of time – take the time to roll a thief or a warrior. Your patience will pay off when you see the numbers. I rolled a warrior and spec’d in the rifle and wow – just wow. I’m levelling a mesmer right now and I’ve actually had more fun in the 11 hours of playing a mesmer compared to the 270 hours playing as a ranger.
If you’re having fun with the ranger, stick with it. All I’m saying is that if you want to have more fun, try something else.
I’m getting the feeling that this automatic ‘root’ of the player when using the one-handed sword is the price you pay for the crippling kick that comes with the weapon. A suggestion would be to remove this kick animation and replace it with a low-sweeping sword slice that has, say, a 30% chance to cripple. To consistently cripple someone is pretty OP, I feel, but to be rooted everytime you want to auto-attack is very frustrating. I feel this is a good solution.

Bleed/burn condition build can be very strong with traps.
This.
I’ve had to revamp my ranger with Cond Dmg/Precision/Toughness gear with Cond Dmg/Precision/Vitality accessories to make it viable because you will be fairly close-range when attacking, so survivability is paramount. I’ve stacked runes of the undead for extra condition damage and toughness on all armor pieces.
I use an Axe/Torch for the fire combo primarily and spam spike trap and flame trap. Skills spec’d 0/30/30/0/10, all in trap traits.
I use sword/warhorn as the alt for the warhorn buffs, what’s good is that I use superior sigils of hydromancy on one of the two weapons, including the alt weapon. When I swap to either of them, it freezes nearby enemies for 3 seconds. I’m finding the sword a little hard to get used to because of the rooting bug you get with Skill #1, so I might need to swap it for another axe. If the shortbow caused bleeding from all directions, I’d use this instead. Unfortunately it doesn’t.
Oh, and a lot of pro-active dodging is required. I’m still practising this build but I’m confident I can be of some use to a team once I master it.
The Freeze from Hydromancy is nice, but if you’re not completely opposed to getting rid of it, I recommend something else.
Do Axe/Torch and Sword/Dagger. Put Sigil of Geomancy on both Weapons….
Open with Torch Throw, Or Winters Grasp (unless Guardian, use Number 1 Attack) I prefer Torch Throw as it gets my pet on its way to the target and then I do Winter’s Grasp. Follow up with bonfire ontop of the target, then Do Number 2 Axe ability, This is a 5 Stack of Bleeds point blank, Switch to Sword/Dagger, this applies 3 Stacks of Bleeds from Geomancy, bringing it to 8 stacks of bleeds, Followed by Dagger 5, which is 3 STacks, So 11 Stacks of Bleed can be applied to the Target Extremely fast.. and on a very low low cooldown. If you’re using Traps you can apply even more very quickly along with of course Burning or Freezing (your choice)
That’s my rotation for both my SPvP build and WvW build.
Thanks dude, I’ll give that a shot tonight.

Amen – admittedly I’ve temporarily shelved my ranger and started enjoying my Rifle Warrior. At the moment my ranger has full berzerker gear and I’m wayyyy too squishy. I might give valkyrie armor a go, or maybe something with more toughness and vitality and see if I can swap out dps for a little more survivability.
Hello fellow rangers,
Firstly, this isn’t going to be an attack on those who are unhappy about the current state of the ranger, neither is it a jab at those who are telling others to stop whining about it. I’m quiet upset about not knowing how to play an effective ranger at its current state at the moment too, trust me, I’ve had my fair share of QQ. I have always been a ranger in every MMO I’ve played and consequently I am burnt with the mindset of the ranger. It’s my style, as it is yours and naturally it will initially feel awkward playing anything else.
What I’m encouraging you boys and girls to do is to make an effort to find something else in the game that you enjoy, take it by the balls and take the time to enjoy it. I’m not telling you to completely forget about your ranger, I certainly didn’t do that. I put it aside for a little while because I know the class can only improve from here, regardless of how long it’s going to take. Plus I invested quite a bit of gold on him and yes, it is a tad annoying but I know I’ll get to use him again and he’ll always be there. Don’t sit around and limit yourself to working on one class. I implore you to try other professions. A lot of you are saying you don’t have the time to level another character – there isn’t a time limit over the top of your head, take your time. This is an MMORPG and was never meant to be a game you could/should rush.
Some rangers out there are perfectly happy with how the ranger is at the moment, even suggesting a few builds and making threads about them. Some others are aware of the ranger issues, yet still find other ways/builds to enjoy it and this is exactly my point. You can disagree with their builds and opinion of the game, but don’t hate on them if they genuinely enjoy the game. What purpose does that serve? Find something else in the game that you might enjoy, you won’t know until you give it a go. It could be rolling a mesmer, warrior, doing more PvP/WvW, spending copious amounts of gold gambling at the Mystic Forge and then failing hilariously – whatever. Sit back and realise that the ranger class is 5% or less of what the game has to offer.
Above all – your fun in this game is directionally proportional to your attitude to the game. Have fun.
TLDR: Waiting around isn’t going to solve anything. Make an effort to enjoy other classes/aspects of the game. You paid hard earned money for this game, take control of it and don’t let it take control of you.
(edited by Jubei.5923)
I rolled a warrior specialising in the rifle, it’s everything I wanted in my main ranger. Sad but true.
Although I don’t believe your build is as strong/effective as you make it sound to be (I’ll have to give it a go before I judge), it IS nice to read something enthusiastic rather than something about the ranger’s lackluster abilities. I’m frustrated about the state of the ranger but it was good to see other rangers like yourself providing their own positive insight with the intention of helping other players.
+1
Rage [On]
I know you guys are super busy with all of that new content and finding creative ways to avoid publishing a Ranger update but please, stop screwing us over. Thank you.
I lol’d. I honestly can’t comprehend how severely overlooked the Ranger class was before the official release of this game. I understand MMO’s aren’t perfect in the early days of release and several aspects will need to be adjusted/balanced over time, but I never expected any class to be this troublesome and broken to this extent at any point of a game’s lifecycle. I was a massive fan of GW1 and clocked 5000 hours on my ranger there, I’m really unsure as to how things became so clouded and off-track with the Ranger class in GW2. I honestly think, as a whole, this game is great. It’s just really unfortunate that it required me to level another character to 80 to appreciate the game more and that I, as well as other passionate rangers, must inevitably wait for a patch that isn’t guaranteed to resolve our plethora of issues.
In saying all that, if any developers or moderators are reading this, I don’t mean to whine . I’m happy to reluctantly wait and be patient if you continue to improve the Ranger class – not just with the coming update, but with future updates to come. I don’t expect you to fix ALL of our problems in one patch, and no one else should either.
If they dont fix ranger to my liking Ill just roll a rifle warrior, no harm done. I love archers but Im not willing to be miserable any longer.
I rolled a warrior with the intention of focusing on greatsword..
And then I tried the rifle. Oh. Your. God.
Having so much fun with it, even though my main is my ranger but I’m waiting on the patch to see if I can muster the will to go back to it.
The ranger class is a little broken at the moment – so if you roll one now, it can only get better. The glass is half full!
Fingers crossed, here’s hoping the update will blow my mind and restore my faith!
