How I See WvW Now…

in WvW

Posted by: usnedward.9023

…compared to before the update.

1. Seems chat has calmed down I have absolutely zero blocks. I wish people would learn what Team chat is for though…sigh

2. Request for TS is up but my case with hearing difficulties I never join TS and never get flamed about it. Still don’t join TS and still never get hawked about it. Follow the pin…how hard can it be?

3. I run wither Necro or Thief and testing a Rev and generally have no issues roaming or zerg except Thief sometimes gets kicked from zerg more often now than before. Generally, I don’t zerg much with Thief but when I do it’s P/P and Staff. Staff to stomp a few then back out and P/P to pick off the injured or down. Other than that I know I don’t bring much to a zerg with it so kind of expected.

4. Thought PiPs would be slow to get for a week for loyalty but nah…it’s fine. Just gotta know how to get them. Easy 7 each tic on outnumbered off time and easy 5’s if you can get a good zerg going other times. 100 a week…not difficult.

5. Rewards? Eh…not there for them and realize why ANET has set the goal high after the easy asc gear debacle a couple of PvP seasons ago. Now people saw easy in the past and want easy now. Those who want it will stay and get better or leave. The drops are good to fund my ever ongoing battle to tweak gear or make some gold.

6. I love the constant back and forth caps. I have seen SMC flip more times in a few hours than I have before.

7. Queues are high around daily reset time (PvE) and I have found flipping in other maps to be much better, challenging and more fun than before.

8. Mind you I am only 244 rank and been plugging away for 5 months or so and enjoying WvW even more. I can’t however just WvW. I still do some PvE stuffs. I think the true PvE’rs who have come to WvW for the most part are learning that the PvE build and gear they have just isn’t going to work are fixing themselves.

9. These are just my opinions and nothing more. Others will see this differently and others will agree. Overall I think it was one of the better thought out processes coming out.

Granted Death – Necro
Consumed Hate – Thief
Unlucky Scrub – Ranger

It’s hard to get ranks, they said. This is with only a birthday booster with quite too many playing hours for my taste put you get my point, it will never take two years of playing to get 2k if you just dedicate your time for WvW

I think a lot of people underestimate just how powerful boosters are in WvW. It only takes a handful of effects to get your XP over +200%. Birthday & celebration boosters are massive & their best effect is in WvW since it feeds into everything.

Well I suppose if you want to be “heard by ANET” you would have to affect their metrics.

So maybe magically compel every WvWer to not play a week. Or sit in the raid lobby spamming in say chat, “Listen to Us [WvW]!” until massive amounts of people are reported….yay inciting protests?

Pretty sure I will get blerped for the suggestion!

WvW Timeline: Situation Explained

in WvW

Posted by: Ragnar.4257

Ragnar.4257

So I see alot of people asking “what happened?” and I see alot of other people trying to explain things who clearly haven’t been around since the start and don’t understand the context. For instance, many players think the stability change is what killed-off hammer-trains, when the reality is that most top-end guilds had shifted away from hammers more than a year before this.

I will try to explain here the history of WvW and show the major changes that had a material impact on how WvW is played, to give some proper context to how we have ended up where we are. I don’t think I’ve missed anything important (obviously plenty of insignificant things missing) but shout if you think I have.

It is important to understand the timing of events, as this is what explains why HoT changes have been poorly received. For instance, the Desert BLs are not inherently bad maps, however the series of events from 2012 to 2015 resulted in a player-base which was conditioned to not like them.

August 2012:
GW2 Launched

Obvious hype at new game, massive queues for WvW. “Turtle” meta emerges, abusing unlimited AoE heals, bundling together, and nuking from ranged.

November 2012:
Ascended Trinkets introduced.
Orbs of Power removed due to hacking.
AoE Heal skills limited to 5 targets.

Meta shifts from turtling to maximising abuse of culling through portal-bombs and chaining veils.

January 2013:
Gem-cost for transferring server introduced.

Feb 2013:
First organised GvGs take place in EU.

March 2013:
Culling removed.
WXP Ranks and Masteries introduced.

Emergence of the “hammer-train” meta, making heavy use of guardian stability uptime, warrior warhorn cleanses, elementalist water-fields, and hammer-stuns.

April 2013:
Confusion and Retaliation adjusted to match PvP values. The “confusion-bomb” tactic dies out.
Siege randomly despawning fixed.
Arrow-cart damage buffed by 80%.

May 2013:
Obsidian Sanctum moved out of EB into its own map instance.
Supply/Stealth Traps introduced.

July 2013:
Siege blueprints become trade-able, significantly increasing availability of superior siege.

September 2013:
Lake in borderlands replaced with Bloodlust Ruins.
Ascended weapons introduced.
“Violate my game-mode” incident where an ANet employee deliberately trolls an organised GvG, producing significant backlash on forums.

Bloodlust Ruins were controversial when first introduced, but quickly became totally irrelevant to most people. Generally only used by people to do daily’s.

“Violate my game-mode” incident severely damaged the relationship between ANet and hardcore WvW guilds.

October 2013:
First WvW Tournament Season
Boons and heals adjusted to prioritise party members.

Tournament sees highest participation in WvW since initial release.
There is extreme disappointment at the lack-luster rewards given at the end of the tournament. Bug (which was never fixed) means many players receive nothing at all, and those who do generally just get a few blues/greens.

At this point many players become dis-illusioned with “PPT” play and server-rankings, as tournaments highlight how dominant coverage/population is, and the poor rewards. “Fights” over-take “Points” as the most popular reason for playing.

November 2013:
Arena added to Obsidian Sanctum, assumed to be a consequence of “violate-gate”.
Toys and town-clothes disabled in WvW.

GvGs mainly move into OS, reducing some of the tension between hardcore PPTers and GvG guilds.
Move to OS sees the emergence of the focus-party meta, as OS has significantly more space than old windmill site.
Dis-abling toys in WvW means there is little reason for WvW players to buy things from the gem-store.

December 2013:
Ascended armour introduced.

Meta among guilds shifts from hard-CC to soft-CC. Warriors become most valuable for Flurry rather than Hammer-stun. Flurry+WellBomb becomes dominant guild meta. Pug-blobs still follow hammer-train meta.

February 2014:
Edge of the Mists map added.
Queues fixed to show your queue position.

Introduction of EoTM sees a significant population shift, as the more casual WvW players move there permanently, enticed by the significantly higher badge/karma/XP rewards. New players no longer need to enter “proper” WvW in order to earn badges for legendary.
This is initially received as a good thing, as now “true” WvW players don’t have to compete for queue-spaces with “PvErs”. Long-term result is significant drain of WvW population.

March 2014:
Second WvW Tournament Season begins.

Once again the tournament rewards are bugged, with many players not receiving the reward tickets.

April 2014:
Megaservers introduced in PvE
WXP changed from soul-bound to account-bound.
Ferocity stat replaces Crit-%
Major re-work of runes, sigils, and method for unlocking traits.

WXP change well received. Megaservers in PvE sever any link between WvW and PvE, and makes it much harder for WvW to recruit players from PvE. Decline of WvW population accelerates.

Ferocity change sees shift in roaming from power builds to condi builds.

September 2014:
Coloured Commander-tags added for 300g.
Siege-Disabler introduced.
Third (and final) WvW Season Tournament begins.
Banners no longer revive dead Keep/Tower Lords.

Significant backlash against the proposed cost for commander-tag colours. Cost is eventually removed.

March 2015:
WvW maps no longer required for Map Completion.
Stability changed from stacking duration to stacking intensity.

WvW no longer required for map completion removes the last incentive for new players to try WvW.

Stability change does not affect roaming or GvG, but has major impact on large-scale fights. “Pirate-ship” becomes dominant zerg meta. Warrior is effectively removed from the meta. Ability of smaller guilds to fight larger groups significantly damaged.

June 2015:
Major re-work of traits (removal of “points”, forced to choose 3 trait-lines).

July 2015:
Golem-Rush Event

August 2015:
Change to arrow-cart line of sight.

October 2015:
Heart of Thorns launched.
Alpine map replaced with Desert map.
Revenant + Elite specializations introduced.
Changes to guild upgrades.
Guild Halls and Arenas.
Shield Generator introduced.
Guild banners and tactivators introduced.
Changes to how buildings upgrade.
WvW achievement requirements adjusted.
Badge gear now salvageable.
EoTM rewards reduced.
Waypoint availability between repel events fixed.
Fortified Gates.
Condi-food nerfed.

Many positive changes, but unfortunately many negative changes also. Major problems of WvW remain un-addressed (particularly population and stability). New PvE content, and requirement to PvE for new specializations and gear drains WvW population even further.

Revenant and and elite-specs reinforce the pirate-ship meta. Roaming becomes almost impossible for all non-elite builds.

Desert BLs not well received. Lag from Oasis event makes it almost unplayable for many. Majority of remaining population shifts to only playing EB if possible.

Changes to guild upgrades universally disliked.
Poor design of guild-arenas results in many GvG guilds giving up.

November 2015:
New squad UI.
Desert BL waypoints moved from spawn-towers to keeps.

January 2016:
PPK introduced.
Can no longer revive fully-dead while in combat.
Rallying reduced from 5 to 1.
Banners nerfed.

All changes generally well received, but do not address major issues.

March 2016:
Oasis event disabled.

If there was one period I would point to as sending WvW into decline, it would be the introduction of EoTM, abysmal tournament rewards, the removal of WvW requirement for legendary, and introduction of megasever cutting off the supply of new players into WvW. No matter how good or bad the updates to the game are, veterans will always leave eventually. Without new-blood the death of the game-mode is only a matter of when, not if.

Some thoughts from a PVEer

in WvW

Posted by: Morte.5916

Morte.5916

Hi WvWers,

Today in EotM I finished my reward track, and almost simultaneously got the 250 badges I wanted for a discount on an ascended amulet. This has left me in in a reflective mood. I wonder should I go back and do it again? Should I try proper WvW? And it left me wondering what Anet should do to make WvW more attractive to PvEers.

So, a few thoughts:

Don’t try to force us. If you do, we will teach you the meaning of “beware of unintended consequences” by e.g. mostly-afking and repairing a wall every few minutes while we watch sitcoms in another window and the queue fro EB goes over 50.

Don’t try to bribe us. If WvW ever becomes genuinely lucrative, then the minds that brought you Tarir multiloot with disguised IP addresses will apply themselves to farming WvW. Believe me, you WvW guys are better off with it as the worst paying game mode than with that.

It needs to pay OK, like the Cursed Shore or whatever. If I can say “it’s not quite as good money as the Silverwastes, but you don’t have to do chest farms” then we’re cooking.

But the first thing WvW needs is to look fun. I think what you need is real marketing. Not by devs, by advertising professionals. Show us videos of cool fights, with voice overs by real commentators saying “now the neat thing about this is…” And make it assuming no prior knowledge of WvW, and put a link on the load screen which clearly flags it as intended for people with no WvW experience.

And once it looks like it could eventually be fun, it needs for people a way to get involved starting from “I know very little except that I’m a bit confused”.

Most of all, what I’d need is a place to start. There maybe good places to start, but I don’t know about them. Instead people jabber on assuming I already know what “push” or “max participation” mean.

There are also practical barriers. Say I like the sound of havoc groups (I do). To try that will I need a set of e.g. rabid gear? If so, that’s on the order of 100g just to try something out. Free level 76 exotic gear, that’s only usable in WvW and disintegrates after 30 hours, would be more like it.

One thing I will say for WvW, BTW… The only obnoxious WvWer I’ve encountered was in guild chat in my PvE farming guild. WvWers seem pretty chill, so much better than the dungeon commnity. Stay cool guys, maybe I’ll see you around some time.

Hello everyone,

Many of you have been inquiring as to why we made the decision to remove the crafting stations in WvW. We made this decision because we have been seeing an increase in queue times with world linking. Upon observation we found there have been players taking up space in the maps who are only crafting and not participating with their teams. However, we’ve been listening to your feedback today and we wanted to let you know that we will be adding a banker to each team starting area in EB, Alpine and Desert. Thank you for the continued feedback!

The Ridiculous Mashup of CD/BP/ET/Kaineng

I would just like to start by saying that this is a DH/EB perspective.

The idea was to join these four servers together to give some sort of competition to SF/GoM/FC & DH/EB, but they have held a consistently high PPT for the last three days bringing them 40-50K ahead of everyone else. There is no competition at least when it comes to points because of their ability to be in every place at every time. Nobody will pass them by the end of the week.

There is maybe a 1-2 hour window outside of NA primetime to actually compete with them in fights, but as soon as that is up we’re back to where we started. Unable to actually defend any of our objective’s because we can’t fight that many people without pulling our commander off the BL for the night.

The fights with SF/GOM/FC are good, and I think most of us on DH/EB are enjoying them. But something has to be done. DH/FC were in a pit against NSP/CD for 3 months and that drained whatever interest I had. I was optimistic about the new server pairing but it seems that we’re back where we started.

Please do not take this as QQ’ing or whatever. I simply want an enjoyable experience for not only myself, but for my server and the server we are paired with.

Since I am not SF/GoM/Fc, I really cannot say much. For those of you who are apart of that pairing and care to comment, please feel free to do so. I’m curious as to what your experience is so far.

A shiny pvp badge only shows that you can run around between circles while avoiding any fair fight that may slow you down or even potentially lose.

That much for the skill to show off. It is a tactical component, that’s for sure. But it has barely anything to do with your individual skill.
Real wvw veterans in the opposite appreciate a fair fight since there is no skill in winning unequal battles.

And I’ve seen plenty of good WvW guilds with players in sPvP so what’s your point?

I’ve seen GS, BOO, KnT, ND, QQ and many other notable WvW guilds with multiple members in legendary.

The PPT orientated or siege orientated guilds generally don’t make it very far in sPvP and mirror the types of responses that are all over this thread such as ‘lol pvp is for noobzzzz’ etc.

Also lol @ the guy here commenting about running thieves guild on a roaming thief, you are hilarious. Probably run dire perplexity as a roamer and think you’re good at this game too.

It was nice to see if your ‘zerg’ had legendary players in it or not. The better the zerg the more legendaries there were in general lol.

They should make it an option to turn off/on rather than just turn everything off. Even with other visual clutter you get options to turn off/on so why not this.

While they’re at it, I want a WvW badge in PvE/PvP thx

Boy, that’s funny and completely untrue. Every good WvW guild I know of hardly does PvP at all. Sure, there’ll be a few guys who are into pvp, but generally, nope.

The wvw development team has done a complete 180. They communicate better than ever. They listen to our feedback. They repost a lot of their reddit posts here. We even get to vote on which updates we want or don’t want. They are gauging what the community wants in the best possible way they can and still you ask for more. *sigh some people will never be satisfied.

This is exactly right!

A lot of people are using this as an opportunity to kick DH while it is down. Having fun?

But the truth is that DH and FC are both servers that probably were punching above their weight class given their rankings before mergers. Both were combined, and ultimately other servers gained the necessary player-base mass to run zergs better, while the DH and FC link did not. The flaws that the two servers were able to mask— through whatever reason— were ultimately compounded.
