I spoke of this on Friday, but let me reiterate.
We could have had rankings, but without tournaments or a way to get teams playing against each other in an organized fashion, they would have ranked…..nothing. Just the pub play matches. That’s why we wanted to set down a framework first, then add in the custom arenas (for practicing/developing organized matches) and rankings. Having rankings without tourneys or a matchmaking system literally wouldn’t do anything…you would just have rankings based on random pub matches where teams would be anything from 1-8 players. Seems bad to me.
That’s why we made that decision.
Does that make sense?
J
I joined tournaments with an organised PvP team since day 1 only to see everyone leaving the game due to the lack of rankings.
Yes it makes perfect sense.
on the screenshot you can see that the treb is not in the middle of the screen. if you are not experienced at using the trebuchet, you will have a difficult time. i wouldnt mind about the whole change but the main problem is: one can’t see ppl coming towards the trebuchet like before.
pls fix this fast !!
You hit 2 people while just standing there pressing 2 buttons, one for 10k one for 11.5k….and you couldn’t see who is coming as well?!
That is unacceptable Arenanet,i am uninstalling as we speak.
It’d be very refreshing to see anything that doesn’t promote heavy bunker builds.
At the moment the game is one super bunker build for each class and endless CC.
Very skillful.
Just buff Vulnerability and spread burst damage,in other words nerf burst damage and make it so peps will need to coordinate with their debuffs and interrupts/CC in order to kill someone instead of lockdown/piupiu (Vulnerability would have to be given some serious love in such a case however). Some sort of brief immunity to CC will be needed for that as well. This way the game will become a lot more challenging and heavily promote teamwork and assisting IMO.
A bit more MMO and a bit less MOBA,please. You can’t compete with LoL and DOTA 2.
Which is (roughly) the same amount that protection mitigates. A defensive boon that (roughly) mimics having an additional 1k toughness. There is no offensive boon in the game that does anything comparable.
Toughness should be changed to offer more mitigation, and protection should be reduced – not extreme changes, maybe 8-10% more mitigation for toughness, and cut protection roughly in half. It’s silly that the ability to truly Bunker is limited to classes who have constant access to a defensive boons.
“Might is a boon which increases power and condition damage and can stack in intensity up to 25 times. The effect of might is determined by the following formula:
0.375 * Level + 5 = Power and Condition Damage per stack
At level 80, this would equal 35. "
Since Armor does not mitigate condition damage, and Might is allowed to be stacked in intensity,Protection is essential.
Do you think the average player has money flowing from their bum?
Sorry but that is silly.Anyone anywhere in EU/US should have £10 a month to spare, especially considering you need a pretty decent PC to run this game.Chances are you won’t miss that monthly amount too much.Successful free games with item shops nowdays actually make more money statistically, because people are too lazy/busy to farm for items therefore prefer to buy them.
The fact that most games follow that route at the moment actually proves that the average gamer has money flowing from their bum!
There no subscription , you can come back when the features you want implemented. Yes you do have a right to be angry , I know how you feel. I came here to GvG, the kitten mode is not even in the game yet but since thete no sub I can just stop and come back when it implemented. What I said makes perfect sense.
It does the way you put it,until they release most features they should have added since launch as a payable DLC and your theory collapses under its own weight.I would rather pay monthly (i don’t care my bank balance is doing well atm) and gradually get what i came for rather than…well hopefully it won’t happen but hey let’s observe and see.
Also,i am not angry,it’s a game kitten However,i am fairly disappointed, mostly with myself having fallen into this.
Again don’t like it you have every right to leave.
How does that make any sense whatsoever considering people have paid for this and the ones that haven’t touched PvE at all (like me) might feel like they’ve been heavily ripped off.
As a paying customer i have every right to stay and complain.
The negativity revolving around around Gw2 PvP, especially the notion of it not becoming an esport, is absurd. I know I’m not alone. I think Gw2 has great PvP (specifically tournys). Everyone complains about balancing, but i think that issues regarding this are honestly minimal. I think Gw2 is on the right track to becoming an esport, and this is a good sign.
I only just installed and had a first look at Dota 2,which is in beta at the moment.
The level of work and detail put in it in terms of e-sport capability make it look like it has already been out for about a year and GW2 is in closed beta in comparison.
GW2 PvP gameplay is brilliant i do agree however the game itself is lacking so much compared to others (even way older ones!) so at the moment if they don’t act fast and make giant leaps forward, noone will take this game seriously in the long term (remember what happened to WAR?It did eventually improve tons but people simply weren’t buying it).It is very difficult once trust has been lost.
Also, did i mention that if they bring the features PvP and the game in general is begging for as an expansion i will personally not touch it,like ever.
Also 2,Planetside 2,free game,“centralized HUD” tickbox of joy.Nothing more to add.
Heartseeker not having a cooldown must be one the worst decisions i have ever seen in my 15+ years gaming history.
Best thing to do is tick ‘Hide Full’ and ‘Hide Empty’ and then as soon as you open the PvP browser, hit Refresh. Then choose a game that has 14/16 or less. Works every time for me.
However if the game has only just ended and everyone’s waiting for the next map,so do you.But without knowing whether thats actually happening or you are going to get that ‘server busy’ message.Next thing you know you see the loading screen for another map than the one you wanted to play. It’d be nice if games with 400++ points where not shown at all.
Also, they have implemented 5v5 in the browser, good job.Half done though,it would also be nice to be able to tick a box and get only 5v5 games,it must be so hilariously easy to add.
Thieves should be all about stealth and landing the perfect blow at the perfect time, but I think organized teams have found a LOT of ways to deal with them.
Story of GW2 PvP,right there.
I don’t mind,really i don’t.
I just wish i had been told before i bought the game.
If i knew i’d be beta testing the PvP features of GW2 for months,i would have asked them to pay me instead. What an opportunity to make good cash gone.
The only thing this game has been consistent with is the facepalming it inspires.
Please put a small “X” on the top right or left of that message so we can close it,like any developer in the known universe would do.
Be observant to the actual game happening rather than what the textlog says, Is also something Anet wants people to do, (as many times previously said)
- Dennis
I strongly disagree with this argument.
At the moment there is so much happening even in 2v2 in such a brief amount of time under very heavy ability effects that makes it impossible for me,especially being mostly on melee classes,to observe at everything happening around me.No chance whatsover.
Also,as i mentioned in my initial post, that would help tons with troubleshooting.
Let me give you an example,Mesmer GS attack hits me while i’m pulling my Spirit Hammer out.Suddenly i realise my Hammer isn’t out and the ability has entered a brief cooldown. Was i interrupted or did i rush my next ability therefore interrupting myself?I log in as Mesmer to see if any GS abilities will interrupt and replay them to learn the animation.Turns out the animation was the auto-attack that shouldn’t interrupt.Do i now know that it was probably my fault? No.
Why?Because the tooltip itself is lacking, there are added “features” to some abilities that aren’t mentioned.A very good example is the Guardian’s Spirit Hammer. It says “it will defend you”.What is doesn’t say however is that it will randomly knock back enemies (which can get very messy/frustrating if you are about to hop on them with GS and Whirl).
An advanced combat log would fix this confusion amongst other things.
All this “you need to use skills, dont expect DPS meters etc” and all that….sorry but, what are you on about? You are not convincing me,i can jump on you with my Thief and burst you down in 3 to 4 sec without giving you any chance to realise what happened let alone react, don’t tell me the game was designed for me to be “observant”.
I opened this topic in the suggestions forum at some point, however it was fully ignored to my surprise.Maybe it was the agressive style of writing.
I won’t stop pointing this out.Well, only when i stop playing the game altogether.
I was on my Guardian earlier and popped my Renewed Focus which supposingly makes me invulnerable, but during the channeling i dropped on the ground.I’m not coming here for an explanation.I would like to see it for myself.
To begin with,timestaps doesn’t show seconds,why??
The amount of information you get is mininal to laughable at (sorry for the agressive attitude, again,it’s just that i’m so frustrated about this.Amongst other things,i cannot believe such an essential feature is lacking).
Why don’t i have the opportunity to look at my combat log and see:
“13:50:11 Casting Renewed Focus…”
“13:50:12 You were hit for xxx by XXX using XXX”
“13:50:12 Your Renewed focus has been interrupted!”
I would also like to see healing and overhealing (helps tons with testing) as well as damage mitigation, absords and more.
Surely,it shouldn’t be hard to configure.
I don’t have 10 hours a day for GW2,actually i have 3 hours maximum.I don’t have the time to play all classes and know every little thing to be able to counter every little thing my opponent can do.Therefore,i demand a much improved combat log that will give me the information i need to improve as a player, rather than needing to quit my job and play 10 hours a day.It will also help a lot with figuring out whether something was meant to happen or was a bug and should be reported (surely you have a much more detailed version of this which you used for testing?).
If anyone disagrees, feel free to express your opinion.I would love to see a justification on why the combat log should be as basic.
I think the biggest mistake Anet did with the Thief by far was giving them medium instead of light armor.Any class that can hit my heavy armor + toughness Guardian for 13k with 1 (!!) hit should die by a fart if focused. However, this is not the case, not only it isn’t but along with the Mesmer they’ve got insane escapal utility.
As someone who plays Thief religiously in sPvP hot-join and Tournaments, I can honestly say that in my humble opinion, there IS one aspect of the Thief class that is OP and that is their burst.
That’s what i also thought, and it was fair enough since they are fairly squishy. However, over the past weeks i’ve been facing ranged Thiefs both with my Guardian and Ranger.Needless to say,i have no chance whatsoever even getting close to them on my Guardian,on the Ranger i still have a massive problem due to their ability to stealth and GTFO at any point of the fight.Thief being a more flexible class than the Ranger…as ranged…makes no sense whatsoever. Not that i’m trying to make any sense of GW2 PvP,stopped trying about a month ago.
Bear in mind,i’m not saying it’s an OP spec.I’m just saying that having the insane melee burst as you mentioned and the option to go ranged and be well effective in most cases, just makes it a bit too much.Makes my Ranger feel like carrying water pistols.
(edited by Kykeon.8572)
Actually,no it isn’t.Major issues aside, about half of the sPvP games i join at the moment i see someone typing “get out of here,we are testing”.It gets worse daily. The game doesn’t let you enjoy itself to begin with,i just wish that was the biggest paradox about it.
I have been going on about this since BWE1…This and the ultra basic combat log.Believe it or not i actually reported it as a bug during BWE1!That was ages ago.
It’s just that they tried to make hotjoin as pug-friendly as possible (then again they might be saving bandwidth/power?!),yet they allowed certain specs to burst a player down in 3/4 sec with minimum if not zero chances of a comeback.A bit of a trainreck to be fair, sometimes it feels like i’m still beta testing.
And what’s with the party frame losing distant party members in t/sPvP?Oh man i cringe so hard when this happens,i’m hoping none of my housemates is going to walk in,see it and ask “what’s this game you seem to be beta testing?”.
Add-ons?Please?
Edit: i am only having fun in sPvP since i realised that there is zero point in helping others, especially reviving them. Not only you risk getting wiped by a thief before you know it,chances are they won’t do the same for you.Just play full solo in sPvP and don’t try to see this game seriously, kill some time and wait for someting else to come out with serious PvP.Now tPvP,that’s different since you mostly kill with roaming GC builds and you rarely have to support more than one teammate.
(edited by Kykeon.8572)
At the moment about half of sPvP maps with 8 or less people (that is non zergy jampacked maps) are guildmates dueling. The moment you join they tell you to go away. Then you have to leave, appear at the entrance of the mists, walk all the way to the PvP browser hoping the next one isn’t going to be same old. Just bring dueling. People want it, always have, the lack of is ruining it for everyone else.
At least do this.
Sadly the game has been built with mostly pve in mind and it might be way too late when pvp improves. It is a matter of time until a good pvp focused game comes out and everyone jumps on the train.
I have just seen that a topic i opened about how basic the combat log is (crucial for hardcore pvp) in the “Suggestions” forum received 0 replies and was buried in 6th page. Most people are pveing and briefly wvwing at the moment and Anet knows it very well. I’ve already started checking Planetside 2 out and please do not tell me it is too early and all that, as others mentioned Anet had stated that the game had been 5 years in developement and i bought it simply because i fell for that, expecting that pvp would be well polished after all those years. But nah.
sPvP is not dead.
Is it just resting?
I’ve played games released in 1998 that had a more informative combat log.
- No crits
- No interrupts
- No healing
- Many many more
I am amazed to see the combat log still stuck in Alpha. I truly am.
There has been so many times that one of my abilities failed to trigger and i was dying to see whether:
1. I was interrupted or
2. The game bugged, in which case i should have probably reported it.
A very brief pop-up saying “interrupted” into the graphical chaos some fights are, is far from enough. It’s not just interrupts really, you learn so much from observing and then reading at your combat log. Also, the timestamp needs seconds as well. At the moment its hh:mm. This is absolutely essential.
I would love to see an explanation on why the combat log is so basic.
Clearly, you haven’t fought against good Mesmers yet.
I’m struggling to see any future in this, sadly.Chain CC,Treb Mesmer Camper,HS & PW spamming Thiefs, unkillable Guardians (i play a Guardian myself, the Spirit Weapon spec is stupidly OP).I’m only still playing because i don’t have to pay monthly, but i see it less seriously by the day. It’s a matter of time until a new game pops in and then goodbye.
(edited by Kykeon.8572)
I’m with you man, whenever i leave the Guardian for the Thief i pretty much always end up top of the table, and i don’t do much at all just spam PW and a couple more and then just die (after having killed 2 of them magically). Then i hop on the Guardian, have 3 minute long on-the-edge fights, defending and capping points all over the place but end up 3rd at best.I just stop caring after a while,it is a bit unfair though.
Thieves are fine (i do not play one) being squishy as hell,Mesmers need fixing although to be fair if they remove their ability to stealth while resetting the marked target as well, which is a massive advantage in messy 2v2 fights, and allow them to only teleport,it’d be fair enough for me.What ruins PvP for me is the chain CC (i just got knocked back 5 times in a row…),and carrying 1 skill with Stability is far for a workaround.Good points so far,it just shows day by day how pretty much everything was designed for mostly PvE in mind, sadly.
I myself play a Guardian with this spirit weapon/burn spec.
I will not defend the spec only because im on it like many kids do on this forum (cough,Mesmers).
The reality is,it’s quite overpowering. The only downside is that sometimes the Hammer might knock someone back just as you try to knock them down and pop Whirl.Other than that, all i see is everyone having a very hard time even standing on their feet (except for Mesmers, they are having the time of their lifes atm,but i guess that has to be my L2P issues, right kids?).
One good solution to this would be to completely remove that trait that allows you to keep the weapons after use.Not only it would balance it,it would also give a fairly strategic value to their activation.
2- When you first see a mesmer in the game, you and the rest of your team MARK’s the mesmer before he spawns anything else. Problem solved… the clones do NOT copy the mark. Kill the mesmer.
Except,it doesn’t work with decent Mesmers.Teleporting removes the mark.Clearly, you just read this somewhere, didn’t you.
Honestly sounds like a QQ thread to me. Can’t beat it so its OP? Clones don’t even really do any damage, your just complaining because you can’t tell who’s who. Well that’s not OP that’s just a little thing called working as intended.
Right…let me guess,your main is a Mesmer?
You know the damage report in the end?I just got Illusionary Unload 16k damage, everything else load less.Explain that to me please,i suffer from serious L2P issues.
I was gonna Take the bait……nahh. You sir seem very confused. I now basically feel any rebuttals on my end are not needed. This response is almost as bad as the OPs.
Man I even brought my umbrella back to this thread and still up to my knees from all these tears.
Trust me,you might be way more confused than me on this, check your combat log more often.

I think this skill will be one of those thing that finally get balanced when PvP slowly dies and the developers start stressing out on what went wrong.Let’s see, seen it happening too way many times.
Man some things they haven’t even thought about,im not even going to mention class balance, targetting (oh dear…) and CC issues.
-Where are the criticals on my combat log?!I used to play RPGs in 2001 that had them.
-Why can’t i move interface elements? How exactly am i supposed to tunnel vision trying to stick on the original Mesmer when my target is all the way up and my HP etc are all the way down? Not to mention my teammates are on the left IF it shows them.
-Why can i not create a channel for calling targets for others to join,so we can have two people calling targets and different people assisting them in seperate parts of the map?
There are so many things that go to show most Anet employees behind those designs,or should i say the lack of,had zero clue about PvP.This has been a major issue with the PvP at the moment.
We desperately need add-ons or major patches.I ended up playing less every day and haven’t seen my guildmates in days.Shame because it is a fun game afterall, let alone i’d been waiting for it for years.
Options → Sounds Options → Dialog Volume.
Done it since day one, suddenly the game was 20x better and 10x less American.
That’s a pretty harsh change – potentially this would make the mesmer completely underpowered lol.
Anet will probably change the mesmer somehow, like you said, but I’m sure it will be subtle or in small steps in efforts to maintain some kind of ‘balance’.
Alright then, revert back to the Mesmer staying in place and not swapping for one of the phantasms while the target ring also stays fixed, like it was on an early BWE.I have no idea why the had to fiddle with that.
3s-5s immunity after each CC you get. Problem solved.
Amen to that brother, other MMOs have found solutions to chain CC for many many years now,i am amazed on how Anet haven’t managed to apply such methods.A brief immunity will add a massive strategical value to CC since teammates will have to manage it instead of spamming it,to avoid giving free immunities when not necessary. It works very well in other games.
It’s hard to fix, because as you say, there are no number’s to consider. You can’t properly quantify nerfing a skill like decoy.
Hard to fix?Hard not to.Make the phantasms proper mirror images doing zero damage and shattering in 1 hit of anything. There you go,problem solved.Mesmer still has a ton of utility as well as the images to cause confusion.Everybody’s happy.
I appreciate the OP’s effort to convince everyone that the Mesmer is alright the way it is,so his/her main can continue ripping apart on pretty much every 1v1 and take all gredit for winning the tournie for the team by exploiting the class’ massive advantages in Khylo.I really do appreciate the effort,i am afraid i cannot see the Mesmer not being nerfed though. If i doesn’t,i’ll just move to some other game, that’s how ridiculous i find the class to be at the moment,on PvP.
(A random collection of latin characters).
I’m struggling to take your post seriously to begin with, having seen that you have edited my nickname.I assume you are at least 10 years younger than me,so i’m too old to understand and move on.
Which part of the Mesmer being able to just sit there watching his phantasms soloing someone and having a laugh did you not understand?I never talked about a nerf, the class would need a redesign for PvP.I’m not saying it is OP overall, only that’s it is an absolute mess, looks like it was put as a stand-alone,and is a serious waste of time to fight against to be fair.I am having no fun fighting against Mesmers like i do fighting against other classes even if they do well enough to destroy me,i seriously do not mind. But Mesmers in some,if not most, cases and especially in tight spaces where the camera does not help at all at the moment is pure frustration.
I just fought a Mesmer in Khylo who was basically hidden behind a building while his phantasms were doing well good damage on me.
The Mesmer situation is getting out of hand, day by day more people try it so they can feel epic and ‘imba’,going for internet builds that do incredibly well in 1v1 even 1v2.Khylo is a good example because a good Mesmer is by far the best class for the trebuchet which in its turn makes too much difference in the final score.By the way,Khylo happens to be a tournament final,go figure.
Some people need to find some hobbies and drop gaming a bit on their top priority list…go to the gym,get into cooking.Chill out and be patient, such processes are lengthy and quite tricky. How can you be “bored” with such a top game, have you tried WvW?I doubt.

Kids these days….
1. Wait, isn’t the other player rewarded for interrupting by having my skill not casted when i need it as well as applying some random CC on me for a sort duration?Does he have to be rewarded with an additional CD on my (normally healing) skill as well?Or rather,do i have to be punished for it additionally?I don’t know if you undestood what i’m saying here, that skill gets an additional CD meaning that when all skills recover from the CD the CC applied that skills takes another go to be released, that’s 2x the CD for an ability that was just interrupted and usually suffered a CC CD.
2. I’ve got a stun breaker with me,i was fighting 2 Warriors and the way they spec at the moment you have to use a stun breaker to avoid being bursted down in milliseconds by HB,therefore i had nothing left.Don’t tell me it wasn’t well played,it is not my fault HB is a win win situation for Warriors.
edit: gah just use “edit” and “quote” on the bottom right links than small icons,i keep messing up :x
(edited by Kykeon.8572)
1.
Why does the skill that’s interrupted while being CC’d get an additional CD?Am i being punished for trying to use it and not hiding myself better,or something?Should i watch when i do it while others watch me watching them to see when i am going to actually do it…i feel like the game is laughing at me every time that happens.
2.
Can i please win a 1v2?I just did extremely well against 2 Warriors, all skills perfect timing and all, used my skill to the max which i rarely do tbh.I had to burn my 1 stun breaker because…you can imagine. Then had no stability to finish the one,got knocked back twice in a row,he got a res and finished me.Can we please get a brief 3/4 sec immunity to CC after being CC’d to be able to finish someone on the second go?Isn’t a one chance enough anyway? My toon tends to spend a lot of time on the ground in an awkward position and doctors say it is not good for his back.
3.
While i am at it,can we please have criticals on the combat log,HP bars over allies always when hurt without having to click on them and the ability to move the party UI as well as our HP bar (also can we get the option for a simple character bar like we do for the party).
Thanks for giving us this awesome game, good luck with sorting bits and bobs out
It does get quite confusing when its packed with effects, phantasms, pets etc and targetting starts jumping around for no reason, but to be fair it would all be ok with me if they allowed to zoom out a bit more.At the same time thought that’d mean they would have to fix and improve the camera auto-fixes.
Chill…they’ve got a ton of issues to fix,it’s just so early.Don’t you guys have anything else to do?It hasn’t been a month yet!
Problem is the more i play the most obvious it becomes that the game was designed with mostly pve in mind.
Does the ranger’s pet pull aggro as well?Meaning it changes your target to it’s pet.Is this a class ability or is it broken?Even if it is a class ability it’d make sense in pve but is ridiculous in pvp.I thought tanks were out of the game yet the ranger’s pet can taunt?
So basically if you managed to target that ranger into the graphical chaos you find yourself hitting something else after a few seconds.Becomes tiring after a while.
I was just chasing an Engi and i’ve got to say they have to be the most intense kiting class i have ever fought against in any MMO.I agree with most of what you wrote, but you are either seeing it from the wrong (right for you) position or you must be talking about another game.
