I found this great little focus that looks like a stick with 4 ribbons tied to it. It is TINY and with the big flowing dress and other mesmer gear it is practically invisible. I found that once I switched to using this focus people had a much harder time figuring out which one was the real me.
I can’t say I have ever been without events to play and I am on Gates as well. If nothing is happening in your area, go to a different area. You can even go to a starting zone and your level and exp scale so I don’t see the issue.
One thing that I noticed though, The norn zones are rather huge and can be very desolate looking. This really adds to the feeling of nothing happening. It looks like you can see for miles and there is just nothing there. I don’t get this feeling in other areas, specifically the human and Sylvan areas, even in midgame. It feels like I am always running into a caravan or being trampled by a herd of centaurs.
Bottom line. If it feels empty, try a different zone or a dungeon. I’ve had zero problem leveling to 80 with no downtime. Sometimes I even feel like I am outleveling the area I am playing in.
As the title asks? To me the Asurans are the most violent race in the game.
WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD
The Evidence:
In the opening quest one highly respected faction, who is described as murderous and amoral, steals an invention from your character. Your character, who is presumably a scientist, his first reaction is to go on a gangland style killing spree pitting your gang (Krewe) against an enemy gang (krewe). This is presumably before making any kind of formal complaint to the authorities because they are either A) too slow and ineffective and in the pocket of the rival krewe (gang).
The second quest based on your choice may have you again chaising down one of your designs and enforcing a kind of Asuran patent protection with extreme prejudice. And by that I mean beating the pulp out of the thief and several completely innocent people. All without trial, police intervention or pretty much anything associated with civilized justice.
Based on this we can conclude that Asuran politics is pretty much gang warfare and their only justice or law is that which is carried out on the street. That is kinda messed up for a race of cutsey wubbly wittle guys. The other race’s stories have you working your violence as part of an established government organization. The Asuran story has you dishing out vigilante justice for personal gain.
Lets compare to the other race’s stories:
Human – You are working directly for the established military/police of the realm to bring down a city wide plot of murder and mayhem.
Charr – You are an officer in the military rebuilding your squad while fighting off a ghost army.
Sylvari – It varies but basically you are trying to stop an obviously evil organization from overthrowing your religious government by use of ‘insert ambiguous magguffin’. And technically you can use a bare minimum of violence to accomplish this goal
Norn – Sorry didn’t play norn, someone can help me out here.
Based on what we see in Metrica Provence you could be a young innocent research assistant walking down the street and get strait up gangbanged because your Krewe is having a beef with the Jet Propulsion Lab.
I always assumed that a ‘krewe’ is kinda like a family unit even though they are probably unrelated by birth. Basically once you are old enough to get out on your own (could be as littlekitten years) You join a Krewe that is researching something you find interesting. And you just stay with that krewe until something happens.
Presumably Asura are beyond the whole ‘follow in your father’s footsteps’ thing. I also assume that the Krewe are a kind of communal living where all proceeds go to the living and maintenance of the lab. Therefore making personal wealth inconsequential compared to that of the krewe. That is why when your tech gets stolen your lab partner strait up tells you ’We should go murder that thieving SOB" it makes sense.
BTW anyone else notice that the Asura are actually a hyper-violent race. I know its a video game but when your machine gets stolen everyone’s first reaction is, “Lets go strait up gangsta on the other lab and murder everybody they ever loved”. and not, “Hey, maybe we should report this to the authorities?”. In the human story line you are at least working as an agent of the standing military authority. As a Charr you literally ARE a military commander. But as an Asura, you are a gang member rollin with a ‘Krewe’ and a loaded nine!
The best remedy for this is to get Asura main hand weapons. At least you are ‘somewhat’ close to asura looking. Other than that, yeah all the engineer stuff is charr/human looking. Honestly I think there are a few anachronistic character combinations in this game. Asura-engineer, and Asura-thief being the big ones. To me the Asura-mezmer is the quintessential asura character. Especially when using Asura skin weapons. I mean that big sword almost looks like a cannon anyway. And for some reason the Asura-Guardian has a lot of skills and weapons that very much scream asura tech. If you play or see a staff guardian you know what I’m talking about.
I play an asuran Guardian. I love it. Mainly going for the same premise as yours, tiny hero with heavy armor.
Unrelated with the asuran race, I rolled a human warrior….I didn’t like it. I can see this being the same even if the race was asuran.
If you are going for the 2H sword on a tiny hero have you considered a mesmer? I was quite surprised actually that a light armor class can use a 2H sword.
Mesmer with a 2 hander doesn’t feel like a 2 hander as it is primarily a ranged weapon. Its almost like carrying around a big cannon instead of a sword.
That said, I think guardian is the way to go. I much prefer the guardian’s 2 handed attacks over the warriors.
Asuran feet look closer to lizard claws IMO. I doubt they have to wear shoes at all. I always just figured they cut the bottoms off other races boots and wear the top armored portion as a type of shin guard.
At first I thought an Asura Guardian was going to be anachronistic but once you get into the story you really see that the asura are quite a fiery tempered people so it fits remarkably well.
As for having a smaller aoe, meh, I actually think this should be part of the game but they should also adjust the hitbox accordingly. I don’t really get the idea of having different size races in the game if an Asura has the same hitbox and reach as a norn. I might be crazy but I enjoy a tiny bit of realism in my rediculous over the top fantasy world. I mean big is still big, and tiny is still tiny right?
necro staff, “bROAR bROAR bROAR”
It sounds like the Tardis is landing next to you.
Not to mention the knife siphon life sound, OMG necros have the worst sound design.
LOL I thought it was just me that phased through the ground. I suppose this is just another case of teleportation error.
Yep, axe is horrible. I pretty much stopped using it as soon as my first dagger dropped. I wish they could move some of the skills over and make it an offhand weapon. There are a few nice things it can do like Unholy feast. but they far and away do not outweigh the bad.
I have to agree with Karandor. Running condition necro in WvW is terribad. I’m not going to say you are going to survive or beat a thief burst spec 100% but at least you won’t feel totally useless.
All I am seeing here is a very good, well specced burst thief that got everything he wanted on christmas morning. Long and short, he played his spec perfectly and you got wrecked. I’m fairly sure if you caught the thief with pants down and set up wells, and vulnerabilities, and got your might rolling you would be able to take him. Its all about playing to your strengths. You just played into his.
Sorry Brits, around these parts Quay is pronounced “kway”
Centaur is usually said “Cen-Tar” as in CENtury and Tar as in the sticky black stuff.
Golem is pronounced pretty much as it looks. “Go-Lehm”
And I have never heard anyone pronounce buoy ans “boy”, its always been “Boo-ee” or on occasion “Boo-eh” or “Boo-ay” based on accent.
And while we are on the subject it is Toe-MAY-Toe, Al-oom-in-um, and Soc-cer
I don’t want to have World Talk. Because you know the only people using World Talk regularly are going to be self important spammers and gold sellers.

Holy moly, congrats. I know I am addicted to buying dyes at the AH. And with 5 characters its kinda ridiculous.
As a general suggestion, pls make dyes account wide.
We desperately need a /sit emote that puts us on a chair. I don’t care if the chair is in world or materializes out of our butts. Any mmo that ships without this is incomplete imo, no matter how great it is.
(gw2 is great)
With the inclusion of the torch (a weapon that every class should be able to at least hold) night should be WAAAAAAY darker. That would make all the glowing effects look brilliant and really make you think about walking around without a torch equipped, or at least in the pack.
Boo to 24hr cycle. I almost exclusively play at night and I would hate to be forced to play my entire game in the dark.
Oh and I almost forgot…FLAMING ARROWS IN SIEGES!
Quiver should be added as offhand weapon that provides you bonuses and ALLOW to use bow (but with no amunition limit) or atleast should be thrown into “back” slot instead of Guild Backpack.
This would be an awesome idea. It adds another cool item to craft. And you can put another set of improvable stats on it. It is simply like a second pistol. All bows are 2 handed weapons anyway so its not hurting anything.
I like this as a concept overall.
Personally as a player I dislike using pets in general. So one addition I would add is the ability for the ranger to completely turn off pets and just play solo. Especially in groups and dungeons.
Why does every game have to have a freaking Katana? Maybe the warriors of Kryta, wearing mostly plate armor, decided the Katana was pretty crappy at breaking through heavy plate? And until they implement a way for heavy armor to decrease speed and warriors to wear lighter armor, I don’t see a reason for Katanas.
I’m not a fan of the scoring system because it is very artificial feeling. Although I do like the increasing rewards in world that the points “Unlock” for your realm. I think what would be even better is that if each point gave some kind of static bonus there would be a great reason to attack other castles and supply yards. Like you get a 1-2% bonus to resource gathering for each supply depot your side holds across all 4 maps.
These are all great and would be scheduled for implementation. I have a few more:
Crafting:
-allow us to see all the recipes we have unlocked while not standing at a crafting table.
(I always forget if I need 3 vials or blood or 5 venom sacs etc.)
Ranger:
-Allow the ranger to have the option to turn off pets entirely.
I don’t just mean stowed, I mean turn it off. I would play a ranger because I like the skills and weapon moves, but I hate pet classes. You can play engineers without turrets and necros without monsters but for some reason this dog/cat/bird just won’t leave you alone.
