Here’s the version I run on my alt account. If you go exotic for the armor and weapons it comes out to be fairly cheap.

On my main account I run vipers, if you enjoy the build it is definitely worth investing in vipers. For PvE you can drop SoS for the extra bleeds but the signet comes in pretty darned handy in WvW, especially when rezzing a buddy.

Curious, how do you gear when in Vipers? I have a set of asc Vipers (Yassith) w/ Superior Rune of the Berserker that I use occasionally for raiding with my Engi. Wouldn’t mind swapping that over to my Druid if I had a good staff build for it.

You can cut the click at the vendor in half buy using the Buy button. Highlight (or double-click) the item you want once, then click Buy after that.

I also would love a way to specific an amount of items to buy, but that workaround should save some wear on your mouse.

If points can’t be added, is there anyway to reset our points so we make a better choice? I feel like I made that one mistake that screwed me out of exploring the new biome for this beta.

Because of the movement speed cap Super Speed is most useful during combat. I suspect the reason we’re seeing more of it now is upcoming raids in HOT. Probably some mechanics will make it a nice thing to have at times. Hence, spreading it around to more classes especially on elite specs.

Alternate fix for Mallyx

in Revenant

Posted by: Lakshmi.5941

Lakshmi.5941

This is a cool idea, although I think your demonic stacks make the playstyle a little too easy. You get to run around with no condis on yourself to worry about, but still send them to enemies?

I started to post a similar suggestion in a new thread, moving it here.

Here’s what I thought in the shower:
1) revert the Mallyx playstyle back to its BWE2 design (except tuning, bug fixes and Displace),
2) add a Corruption trait that makes the revenant immune to ally condi clears. Make this add an effect + icon to your bar that enemies can see.

This would bring back the Condi Control feel of the stance, and retain the high skill cap for both play and counterplay.

(I know Displace had a ton of potential, and I’ll miss it. But I accept that it didn’t play well with too many aspects of combat system. )

Almost certainly some of the collection will involve tradable items. I suspect MOST of it will be task oriented, but there will always be something that can be traded, and that item or items will skyrocket in price. This has held true for every new shiny thing Anet has introduced and I can’t see them doing a complete 180 on this.

For sure, but what if I can buy those tradeable items with karma via the Supply Line Mastery?

I think this reaction is based on seeing a tiny part of the HoT maps. There’s a decent chance that other parts of the HoT maps will be soloable.

Also remember that these maps are designed with the new travel masteries (gliding, bouncing, wallows) in mind. Getting around gets about twice as easy with the first tier of gliding and mushrooms, and even easier as you rank up.

Another factor from the weekend: many folks were playing classes they weren’t really familiar with, against mobs they weren’t familiar with. With some experience on both accounts the fights become a lot easier.

If they have since changed from that, please provide the source.

Hmm, I also understood this differently too. Maybe they did change it.

So maybe he’s talking about selling quested precursors before the price on the TP crashes. I wonder how many people will leave their buy orders up for launch?

Noone will get rich from these precursors, they are account bound.

Not what I meant. But that’s ok, i’d rather be rich than explain.

I’ll be grinding COF1 75x upon release! Should take me about 12 hours.

He might mean controlling the market on scraps of gossamer, or whatever materials the new legendary recipes might require. Although he could mean charging for “Dancing with Queen Jenna” — who knows?

It’ll be interesting to see how market-dependent the new recipes will be. The alternative is task-based, or based on materials you can acquire via map rewards or via the new Supply-Line Management mastery.

If ArenaNet are listening, I hope you’ll make it the latter. Many of us who don’t have legendaries yet are in that spot because we don’t (or won’t) play the game to support the market fetish of TP flippers.

The game should do this automatically, you should never need to taxi people into an open world map. The events should always scale to the number of players actively engaging the content, so that however many people are playing, that is exactly the number of people you need.

I agree. I was just giving an approach to progress with testing during BWE2.

The one thing I really hope the HoT zones don’t become is 98% solo with just one or two events on the Boss Timer Train, like Mount Maelstrom. Someplace you rarely visit after you’ve passed through once. I’ve played a lot of Silverwastes and Dry Top with my friends, specifically because it was more fun and rewarding in a group. I think there should be some solo content too, of course, and they’ve already shown us harvesting and Activities. Probably there will be more. But I’d feel a bit ripped off if the new HoT zones didn’t also have challenging, rewarding, repeatable open world events like the more recent zones.

For folks finding not enough people to complete the event chains (or defend at night) have you tried LFG? I loaded into a low population map, then taxi’d pretty much immediately into an organized map.

In this way, it’s no different from Silverwastes. Empty maps progress too slowly, but there are plenty of maps recruiting more players.

I agree this edition of Verdant Brink feels too easy (easier than Silverwastes, actually). I don’t know if it’s just mob difficulty, however. The place seems too calm… very easy to just run past the mobs. I think we might need both more mob challenge and a greater feeling of invasion.

The fact that you can finish the event chains well before day/night cycles, and then the entire area goes passive doesn’t help. Unless they add a chest train (just kidding btw!), “Timeout” feels pretty odd. :P

How do map rewards work?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

One thing I wanted to check out in BWE2: map rewards in the non-HoT, non-Maguuma Wastes zones. So I spent 30 minutes yesterday doing events in Cursed Shore and another 45 minutes in Snowden Drifts since the daily was there and events were popping fast. On an HoT beta character, of course.

I never saw a single map reward. Based on what I read after BWE1, I expected to get a reward every 2-4 events. I checked the tool tip on the world map for the zone and watched for a bag or wiggly box with the basic reward (or one of the higher tier ones). Nada.

[BETA] Feedback on the Mastery System

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Lakshmi.5941

Lakshmi.5941

Ah, we posted about the same time. I agree, and went into a lot more detail about the ways the current system is not ideal in this thread.

It actually blocks progress if you can’t get enough mastery points, and that’s pretty discouraging in a “why play?” sort of way.

Feedback & Suggestion: Mastery System

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Lakshmi.5941

Lakshmi.5941

I put almost the whole weekend into trying to unlock as many masteries as possible, and I wanted to share my feedback.

My overall summary (balance issues aside): Masteries are cool, but the unlock system is confusing, and completely blocks your progress at times.

Detailed feedback:

The system is hard to understand.
I don’t know why these unlocks require both XP and Mastery Points. Maybe there’s a good reason for it but the complexity of this design makes the system hard to understand for a large % of folks.

I led a group of guildies in a Verdant Brink exploration on Saturday night, and it took us almost 20 minutes of explaining to get everyone to understand the unlock system well enough to start earning their first gliding mastery. An hour later, we were explaining it all over again.

We heard the question asked many times in /map. too. Not at all intuitive!

It requires too much Right Now! interaction.
When a mastery “primes” for unlock I have to stop everything and buy it Right Now!, or figure out how to stop the nag messages. Otherwise I get a popup each and every time I gain XP prompting me to complete the unlock.

What’s worse, the nag messages are a requirement of the current design! If you fail to act your mastery progress from XP is simply lost.

Difficult (for some folks) to get enough Mastery Points
A friend of mine who has superb reflexes was able to get some MP from the adventures. I spent many hours this weekend trying (and failing) to earn mastery points from adventures. First advancing buggy maps to unlock the adventures, and then grinding them over and over trying to get silver or gold. Bottom line, I just don’t have the reflexes to win the competition.

I was tempted to give my account credentials to my friend with the good reflexes so he could go to get them for me. I didn’t — because sharing account credentials is something I never, ever do (nor do I recommend it).

But this experience highlights a gotcha with the two-currency design. My mastery progress was blocked because the lines were “primed,” but I didn’t have enough mastery points finish the “unlock” step. So my XP (and progress) was just falling on the ground.

Compare this to LS Season 2 achievement “progress”. I’ve finished them all, and some took practice and several attempts to beat. But I was never blocked. Not having enough mastery points is like having your entire LS Season 2 disabled because you can’t beat Wicked Rodeo. (Or worse, since you can get friends to help with Wicked Rodeo.)

Perhaps this is “by design” but it doesn’t feel right. If the goal is the throttle progress, please consider a daily element instead.

SUGGESTION
I think it would be a big improvement to make mastery progress work more like WvW rank points. Not the UI but the underlying one-currency mechanics. It would both more understandable, and give players more freedom to earn progress the slow & grindy way if they can’t master a quick & skilled way.

Here’s the system I’d like to see:

  1. The only currency needed for mastery unlocks is Mastery Points.
  2. Earn points, spend them later at a time of your choice.
  3. Progress is never completely blocked. Even if there’s a time-gated element, some component of progress through normal play is always available.
  4. XP is one way to earn mastery points, Challenges are another way. These are just two examples; several other ways to earn mastery points are possible.
  5. Ways to earn mastery points can differ by category. Perhaps in Fractals XP isn’t used at all, and the non-challenge way to grind mastery points counts boss kills instead. (10 kills/point, for example)
  6. In the Masteries dialog, each masteries category (Heart of Maguuma, Tyria, etc.) has it’s own “progress to next mastery point” bar. Fill the bar, get a category-specific mastery point.
  7. The dialog also shows the number of unspent Mastery Points by category.
  8. In the main UI, what used to be the XP bar before level 80 (at the bottom of the screen) now shows your progress toward the next mastery point that can be earned in the current map / area. (If I’m in Verdant Brink, I see the progress bar for the next MP I can spend on Heart of Maguuma masteries.)

After that it’s just balancing the numbers. How much XP (or whatever) equals one mastery point, how many Mastery Points each challenge awards, how many mastery points per unlock.

Bottom line: It’s simple and more consistent with the progression system we’ve already used in WvW.

And it gives you the flexibility to choose how you earn your progress. If you are good at the category-specific competitive challenges, less grinding for you! Better still, you get to earn progress doing something you enjoy more than grinding. I don’t mind if a really skilled guy gets to his goal faster than I do, as long as I still have the means to get there with sufficient effort.

I had this happen (because I was having a hard time getting Mastery Points), and every time I killed a mob, the “hey you have an unlocked mastery line!” popped up. Any time I got XP I had to stop and close that dialog. Ugh.

No progress was made toward the next unlock in the line. Until you find those mastery points to do the second part of the unlock, or switch to a different mastery line, you XP is not being applied to mastery progress.

I don’t know if the implementation is simple, but from a new user perspective it’s readily understandable since /ignore is such a common MMO feature.

Lakshmi.5941

I just finished the new story 60 – 80 (I finished this on my other 80s using the previous options, but saved one to try out the solo version of the story).

Overall, really liked the tweaks and new voiceovers.

Death and Victory was pretty fun, right up until the cannons. On my squishy glass mesmer the cannon phases were not exactly hard, but definitely a long slog. I could fire only a couple shots before I had shift to killing adds because I couldn’t just stand there and tank them while I fired the cannon. I did use the cannon’s shield skill (where available) on cooldown, but the dragons still spawned adds very close to my character.

The way this fight is scripted I bet the solo cannon phases would be dramatically faster on a class with heavy armor or powerful passive defenses, for example guardian. Is that intentional?

FWIW, I’ve completed all of the Living Story Season 2 achievements — many of them on the same glassy mesmer that had to go into “long slog mode” for cannon phases here. There were a few achievos where a specific class had a small advantage or disadvantage, but not this extreme. Anyway, food for thought.

Thank you for the restorations and new solo mode. I got to revisit a few old friends, and see some chapters I never experienced before.

Initially however it reminded my the confusion of Kaineng in GW1, which is not good.
My real problem was that it was not clear at all what to do in some cases. For example the “challenge” in the pit in the southern ruins, were you have to salvage stuff while bombarded.

I actually /bugged this one (the Salvage Pit). I think I figured out what we were supposed to do eventually (and it looks to be very, very difficult without the rank 4 speed mushroom mastery unlocked). I felt the NPC text should have been a tad more explicit about what’s expected.

I also agree. Night time events seems to have too much downtime as well. When they were underway the events were challenging enough (for people in Cele gear but there was a lot of standing around time in between.

I’d like to build/repair defenses, haul supplies, etc. during downtime AND during attacks (a tactical choice between killing attackers and building defenses). Airstrike during attacks would be awesome too.

BTW I did haul supplies several times but gave up for five reasons.

  • I couldn’t deposit supplies when the base was under attack (or maybe because I was in combat).
  • No benefit could be seen when I successfully added some to the pile (other than the graphic for the pile growing larger.)
  • Supply seemed too rare, however this perception might be cause by the “nothing happens” problem in the previous point. I felt that if more supply was needed to make something happen there wasn’t enough around to accomplish it.
  • Running supply is not personally rewarding. No xp, karma, no nothing.
  • Running supply is Not Fun. I can’t use any skills while doing it, engage in combat, etc. Unless this task is balanced to have very good personal+tactical upside, this isn’t something I’d choose to do.

Contrast these points with supply in the Silverwastes. The effects of the supply delivery are readily apparent and players are rewarded for escorting the bull — with XP, karma, bonus loot, and the happy priviledge of actually fighting while they do it.

My guess it that there’s a lot more resistance to physical damage in the test, even more than we see in SW in live.

Lakshmi.5941

I like the new UI a lot — it’s much clearer and easier to use. But I still think there’s room for more customization in the new system.

Illustrated here! http://imgur.com/a/UVRYY

Assume these things remain as already seen in the design:

  • Max 3 specializations
  • Max 3 traits per specialization
  • You must buy a trait in the previous tier to unlock the next tier

But these things change:

  • You may buy multiple traits per tier
  • You never buy Minor traits. Instead, buying the first trait in a tier enables its Minor Trait

Since you still have to unlock tiers in order, this means you may choose:

  • Three Tier 1 traits, or
  • One Tier 1 trait + two Tier 2 traits, or
  • One in each tier

Personally I’d love the flexibility of my proposed system, and I think it’s nearly as simple as the one Anet have already shown us. There’s a built-in tradeoff too, since buying multiple traits in a lower tier means you’ll miss out on the T3 minor. Or both T2 and T3 minor if you get all three tier 1 traits.

Not sure how realistic this is, either. It would likely require a lot of rewiring under the hood since Skill/Hero Points & especially the number of challenges around the world all assume we’re also spending those points on the minors as well.
