Hi all,

I signed off on the first episode of Living World Season 3, and we’re getting ready to announce the episode and its release date. I’m super proud of the team for hitting this milestone. Over the past few weeks the team has been processing up to a hundred pieces of feedback each day, working to get all the details right.

Reaching sign-off on an episode doesn’t mean we’re done. Now we integrate the episode content with the other updates that ship in this release, and with localized text and voice-over, and we do final testing of all that. To give a sense of the scope of this process, this update has about 1,500 distinct lines of new voice dialog, each of which must be recorded, integrated, and tested in each supported language. For the player character’s voice, we separately record each race/sex combination in each language, so that means 40 actors for each line.

With this release, we’re bundling a Living World episode with additional content for other areas of the game. You’ve seen that we’ve been following a pattern of releasing a bundled update each quarter; this is a content-focused continuation of that kind of thing. Of course, we’ll give this release a name, not “July Quarterly Update”. And we may be able to increase the pace, ramping from four bundled releases per year towards six, so we’ll move away from calling these “quarterly”.

Some of you may look back nostalgically at 2013 when we shipped updates every two weeks. That year we shipped a wide variety of things: nine or ten releases that we’d today call a Living World episode, plus updates to systems and content for other parts of the game, plus festivals. So it was the extreme unbundled version of this. It was nice that there was always something new, but I’m personally not wistful of that cadence, because we sacrificed so much to be able to ship that frequently. With Season 3 our goal is to deliver content sustainably, at quality, establishing a pattern we don’t have to take breaks from.

It feels great to be shipping Living World again. Thanks for your patience through the recent content draught. Having been through it, I’m sure you understand why I’m focused on sustainability.

Stay tuned for a more formal announcement, and for more details from ArenaNet and our partners.

A couple notes on Dragonhunter. We went with this name because we felt it was evocative of the medieval witch hunters. Guardians consider themselves protectors of the innocent. Followers of their faith be it in honor, valor, etc. The origin of the dragonhunter is a more subtle nuanced version of this. Guardians fight for justice and the dragonhunter faction believes justice is the eradication of dragons and their minions. I understand this is a lot more high concept than Mesmer but at the end of the day we felt like we wanted to try and push a more mature theme here. I hope this helps explain our thinking. We had other generic names in mind but felt like it was important to have a mix of spec names that are generic fantasy, more Tyrian fantasy, and more high concept. This one falls more in the third category.

Thanks,

Jon

The ‘E’ in PvE stands for environment. Meaning the explorable world. Fractals are just a puzzle sideboard. Has nothing to do with the world map

Oh lord, people like you…trying to split tiny hairs. One could say that Fractals is set in an area that is in some ‘world’ and what you do is ‘explore’ it. Ta-dah! It’s an explorable world.

It would be simpler if you just outright said “I can’t do fractals, I shouldn’t have to do fractals for my dailies!”

To normal people PvE is just Players vs AI and PvP is player vs player. It’s that simple. Although if we wanted to be silly, PvE player vs environment, one could simply say ANYTHING around you is part of your ‘Environment’ even if you are in a PvP mode.

No don’t nerf them. Eliminate them.

They are just one more addtion to the game that Anet made that gives even more advantage to the strong.

Anet did not understand their game mode and the problems inherent to it. They made all these additions that did nothing but make already existing issues worse.

Get rid of all superior siege in fact. You will see how much more fun the game becomes.

In fact I propose this to be one of their “tests”. Like getting rid of white swords and adding PPK. Have a month where superior siege is unusable and see what happens.

So you propose they remove a level of siege simply because you, personally are unable to deal with those attacking with siege? If you want player to player fights alone, your welcome to go play PvP or initiate battles in obsidian sanctum. I prefer the warlike aspects that WvW offers now, thanks. I prefer using strategic siege and counter siege, similarly to how battle is designed in this instance. All your doing is making claims, and demanding they redesign an already existing, fun game mode, to serve your personal desires, regardless of how it effect those who enjoy it.

If you want a with limited to no siege, then go offer that suggestion in the appropriate sub forums, and stop suggesting the ruin this one for you alone please.

Life isn’t meant to be fair. If you are not enjoying the WvW on your server, either you pay and transfer or suffer the consequences of not doing so. Anet is unlikely to do anything about “dead” servers for a very long time, especially with an expansion on the way.

This sums it up nicely.

A lot of there customers are leaving because of this. So if they don’t care then they shouldn’t cry when customers leave. I’m about to quitte and ask for a refund to. Having 4:1 imbalance all the time is something they should fix. You already paid for the game. A lot people i know are not gonna purchase the expansion and a lot stopped purchasing gems. I think they have no idea the amount of kittened of customers they have about this and that its costing them money.

Prove it. Gayle recently posted about the population surging for some time now. Yet you claim to have better population metrics the the game developers?

I think they know precisely where their customers stand. How do you expect folks to listen to your perspective, when you make such large claims, that has so much evidence supporting the contrary?

You prove it. Because there’s no way population is surging. Unless, of course, they’re including EotM karma trainers in the numbers — which they’ve done in the past. They’ve given themselves a pretty bad reputation when it comes to trustworthiness.

It already has been proven. You simply ignore it in the name of saltiness. Such as claiming they are not trust worthy. I have seen no evidence of that. All I have seen is aggressive posters, such as yourself, make accusation, forcing them to rein in on posting and communication, by aattacking, over analyzation, and twisting everything they share, in the name of your saltiness, as you do here.

I lolled at the comparison to WoW. To play wow you spend $20 for the base game and if paying long term subscription $155 per year. so 1 year cost of $175.

GW2 at $40 to buy then zero ongoing cost, even adding the LS purchase, you’d be at around $60.

Now if you’d been playing either game for 2 years, WoW cost of $330 and GW2 still $60…

Guildwars2 is a great value, that’s all there is to it. And the OP’s friends got the game on special for $10 to boot, so the complaints are just hilarious…

Are you trying to say that the store that was added years after it launched was the primary focus and that it made them more money then all the boxes sold? I remember when the store launched and all you could get was more character slots and the expansions. Then when they made it so you could have a pvp character with everything unlocked for balanced arena pvp they started selling skills in the store. I will agree that is an advantage for PVE but everything was on an even playing field for PVP. Are you saying there is not more in-game advantages in the current gemstore? Day one in Guild Wars I could not pull out my credit card and buy what ever I wanted including the best weapons in the game like I can in GW2. Trying to make Guild Wars sound pay to win when GW2 is 10x more pay to win is silly.

Years after? The in-game store in GW1 was released July 28, 2006 which was only a few months after Factions and only about 1,5 year after release of Prophecies, and before the release of the last campaign and the expansion.

And no, PvP in GW1 was not an even playing field. You still had to manually unlock the vast majority of skills, or you could take out your credit card and buy them all, thus bypassing the grind for either faction or in PvE-playing. A new account that just started playing had only a very basic skill-bar unlocked in PvP, not everything as you seem to imply.

How is being able to buy the best weapon in GW2 by trading gems for gold any more of an advantage than to be able to pay money to unlock the skills in GW1? You are also ignoring the fact that you could buy mercenary heroes in GW1, which basically made it possible to create AI-parties that were 100% impossible without paying.

I’ll go ahead and play this game. The “screenshot” you’ve provided while “awesome”, doesn’t discount the fact that no one in this screenshot has been actioned. You are posting on the forums, which is a clear indication that you are not banned. None of the people in this party chat are banned. So while the “Legit” is being put into say (according to this screenshot), no action was taken against anyone here.

I know you wanted to post a screenshot of an account being banned, but you are posting a screenshot from the launcher back in 2012. We are on build 38057 not 15377.

My guess is that the GM was putting into question the validity of the tactic being used, but did not action as there was nothing against the rules.

I’ll go ahead and supply the screenshot that the GM took in context of this text. GM Stuffs and Character Name of person in question are blurred (sorry!)

Communicating with you

I know some are concerned about whether ArenaNet is communicating with you and listening and responding to your feedback. As you saw with yesterday’s announcement, we do. All of us at ArenaNet play the game with you, chat with you and read your forum posts, and work on the things that we think will most delight and entertain you.

We’ve set a clear policy in the past year: we don’t talk speculatively about future development. We don’t want to string you along. Creating fun is an uncertain business: sometimes things work out and sometimes they don’t; sometimes we go back to the drawing board over and over before we get something right. If we make optimistic promises and then can’t deliver on them, everyone suffers. So when we attend a trade show or give an interview, we’re there to talk about what we’re getting ready to ship, not to speculate on what we might ship someday.

Don’t read that as meaning that we don’t want to talk with you about the longer-term roadmap. The intention of the CDI threads is to talk with you about the roadmap. We want to talk design philosophy with you and hear how you want to see the game evolve. When those discussions trigger development, we’ll work internally until we have something we’re proud of before we’ll announce it.

A lot of the questions I’ve seen posted this week are as simple as this: does ArenaNet have an agenda to never do something? That’s almost never the case, and if it is the case you deserve to know and we’ll make sure we get more clear. In general the simple truth is this: when we’re not currently working on something, it’s because we’re working on something else instead that we think is more important for the game and community.

Our developers post on these forums on a voluntary basis, and in addition to developers, we have a community team who can clarify and be the bridge between players and developers. They’re ready to engage you on these topics. And I know it’s hard for the community team to engage players across all the forums and sites where these questions are being discussed, so I’m going to support the team in consolidating and focusing as necessary, so that we can be clear to the community where you can go to get a response.

See you in-game,
Mike O’Brien

Dear Anet,

Please get your head out of the clouds. This game is not an Esport and will never become one. The vast majority of people play this game for the PvE aspect of the game.

Over 3 million PvE players have been begging you for new ingame armor sets for almost 2 full years. We have gotten none.

Now you are implementing a PvP armor set that can only be obtained by winning tournaments in tPvP mode? There are currently <1000 players who actively participate in tPvP.

3,000,000 > 1000. Please re-evaluate your priorities.

Thank you.

Where did you pull those number from? Like usual, it’s always some self-entitled hardcore PvEr that moans when PvPers get something unique to them.

It’s not all that odd if you think about it. ArenaNet is only interested in making money. Giving people a 2 week limitation forces people to buy, Buy, BUY! If they made it unlimited, yet kept the rarity the same, some people would still rush in to purchase keys – but nowhere near as many that will because its “2 weeks only”.

Oh no. A business wants to make money to pay their employees and keep the game actually running. How dreadful.

Does LS not count as content? Sure it’s only temporary, however I found that the LS updates every 2 weeks seemed like more content overall, compared with any other mmos. Also what about Teqautl, Triple Wurm, EOTM, and pvp revamp? Pretty sure these are fairly large bits of content added, on top of LS.

It doesn’t really count, because if you miss it, it’s pretty much gone without a trace. Completely unlike other MMOs, where much of the older content will still be accessible AND worth doing!

As I missed maybe 70% of the LS, that had zero value to me. Teq and Wurm are only for the serious elite/hardcore (by Anet design!), EotM is irrelevant unless you WvW, PvP unless you PvP (and they REMOVED content rather than adding it!). All the awesome new weapon and armor art are strictly only for pay. So yeah that’s pretty close to zero, sadly.

It doesn’t have to be that way. The LS could leave permanent changes, improvements, and additions. So far it has only left permanent harm – i.e. destroying LA and leaving us with a less-functional version in Gendarran (with full functionality paywalled for important paying people, of course, which is pretty pathetic. You could argue that in some ways GW2 has LESS content now than it did a year ago!

It just gave us new things and players apparently CAN’T accept anything new.
I would ask you in advance to save us from a wall of text becasue it is usually to try to argument about this specific points, it is a fact by this point: MMORPG players don’t like change, something proven from a philosophy standpoint, humanity in general don’t like change but also like to complain about what they have.

I see alot of people asking for content like WoW but did you know that WoW forums have the exact same threads about lack of content and tedious repeition?

I’m getting tired of people complaining about people complaining.

Wait, So your complaining about people complaining about people complaining?

My brain hurts trying to think about that.

The forums are mostly going to be people complaining. Thats the nature of forums. Those who don’t care and those happy with the changes and the way things work are GENERALLY not on the forums. They are happily in game doing things. So while it appears there is rampant discontent, the reality is, it’s a small fraction of the entire game population. You’ll find the complainers post multiple times in multiple threads, thus giving the appearance that there is a lot of traffic in those threads.

I have not logged into the game and really played in 1-2 months. I have it uninstalled. But I am curious…
If what the OP says is true, that the megaserver places you in areas with people not of your native tongue, this is kind of..odd. And as the poster following him stated, many people are having issues adapting to the 4/15 update.

My question to the community and arenanet is this:

Why is it that arenanet seems to be the only developer willing to shake things up at the core and foundation of their game so much that people remember the dates of these changes in infamy? Another example, the November 5th 2012(I think the 5th) patch lives in infamy due to the release of ascended gear. Why is it that these huge changes which have good intentions behind them, so critically received?

Only a small loud handful of people were pining for some sort of verticle progression. So arenanet claims that ascended gear was always planned(but never told to us even 3 months after release and after we had our exotic sets rolling) and released it spawning one of the biggest controversial topics you’ll see on the forums.

No one asked for Living Story, and yet with its release and gradual build up as the core of their content development, interlaced with themed updates, mini games, hard to come by skins, gem shop cash grabs, and temporary content, spawned yet another intensely hot topic. Infact, a lot of people had asked for traditional content updates and questioned when the first expansion would be prior to living story even beginning. But no one asked for living story.

No one asked for mega server technology. We did ask for arenanet to come up with a way to populate the “leveling” zones a bit more. I always thought that this would be a system that encourages us to play in these zones, any zone that we choose, even at level 80. Instead, they roll out mega server technology(TESO anyone?) and merge every speaking language together? Im assuming there are more blatant issues that go along with this. We asked for zones to be filled again, not to be merged with people from other countries.

A few examples…one has to wonder who is making these decisions and why? Do they read these forums?

While I’ll admit, my hype over Wildstar has not been as high as my hype for GW2, and maybe thats a good thing all things considered, and I have contemplated coming back to GW2 at some point in the near future, but questionable development direction keeps me away. It is what finally drove me away from WoW after 7 years. And its what finally drove me away from GW2, and keeping me away.

Aside from the ascended gear, there is a mixed bag when it comes to opinions regarding Living Story and Megaservers and while both have flaws the illusion that both are ‘’trash decisions’’ is as mentioned…an illusion.

It is unrealsitic that GW2 today is one of the most populated MMOs in the west if we check the negativity in the forums like how it is unrealistic to believe that WoW surived 10 years while according to its forums, the game have been ruined for 10 years.

Yes, there is flaws, yes, Anet do stuff differently anda ren’t scared at all of trying new stuff…but that’s how innovation happen, we have enough MMOs following the same old stuff. Yes, they fail sometimes…but I would rather see them get better than copying others.

For reference, GW2 have basically been a game where Anet literally experiemented with methods and strategies and yet the game is cosnidered by the majority of media and playerbase (even of other MMOs) to be one of the most impressing if not the most impressing title on the western MMO market, that can tell you how bad the genre is.

PS. Your ESO reference regarding the mega-server is ironic, consdiering how Anet used the same technology 8 years ago in the cities of GW1.

You’re not losing anything, you still have a weapon that can change stats on the fly, for free, forever.

The skins cannot change stats.

You chose to make 2 of the same legendary. You’ve enjoyed it until now. You’re still going to enjoy it. It still outshines every other weapon due to being able to switch stats. What are you hoping for?

Stop complaining for no reason.

Here, I’ll give this topic some fuel to keep going:

Provide one reason (a real one, not one born out of regret and entitlement) why you should be refunded for making the same LEGENDARY twice.

ALL IS VAIN.
