Beta crippled by bugs, lack of info & devs

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

From being in the beta events for the release of GW2 and now beta for HoT, I feel that this beta is fairly poor in comparison.
The beta events for the release of GW2 were far greater in terms of getting your feedback! Does anyone else remember the pop ups when you completed something that asked you to rate it out of five based on a few different things with an optional feedback box for your thoughts?
That would have been far better for this.
Unfortunately, I feel that although it is good we have been given access to this area, the length of the beta does not reflect the playable content in game.
Within six hours of taking my time playing, I had done pretty much everything available and had discovered the bugs and then had gotten bored out of my skull.

I hope to god that the expansion is much better in terms of hours of game time…I fear I have shelled out the top end price of £79.99 for an expansion the size of silverwastes and drytop!

Hopefully I am totally wrong in this feeling, I really hope I am as I love this game!

We took a week off of elite specs for what?

We have known since the week of the Chronomancer reveal that there would only be three specialization weeks in the first set. This is not something that we learned last Friday.

Just because YOU don’t care about WvW doesn’t mean that no one else does. The same line could be added to basically every single week:
“Meh, only boring [insert subject here]”.

The changes are big in terms of WvW, and WvW is one of the three main game modes.

Krall Bloodsword – Mesmer
Krall Peterson – Warrior

Even an optional trinity would prove useless. Most professions are versatile enough to do that already.

I think what’s expecting us is something quite new and Anet clearly proved that they were able to think outside the box.

3) On Dulfy it is said that it will be playable in 6 weeks at PAX East… So we can expect it to drop on August like the main game? Before or after? :p There will be available a pre-purchase like the one we had for the main game? :p i had to try and ask these questions XD

Guild Wars 2 had a playable demo in GamesCom 2010. It was released two years later, in 2012.

So, the fact we will have a playable demo in 6 weeks means your release window is anything from 6 weeks plus one day to two years

Please don't kill off Trahearne

Trahearne can be fixed. Please DO NOT kill him off!

I see a lot of people asking for Trahearne’s death and blood, but I think that would be a huge, HUGE Mistake! Why? In short: It would be repeating the ‘Trahaerne’ cycle over again.

When Trahearne came into the story, players were pre-conditioned not to like him, not because of Trahaerne’s character itself, but because the way the Personal Story was set up.

1. Throughout the entire personal story, from level 1 to finish, we are introduced to characters who befriend us for about 10 levels, then simply get replaced. By level 50, when Trahearne is introduced, we already get that feeling about him as a “replacement”.

2. Our mentor’s death. As players, we thought our mentor would actually stick with us, as they remained for more than 10 levels. Our mentors had spicy, fun personalities, and then they are suddenly replaced. That felt really bad.

3. Trahearne came off TOO much as our friend. There wasn’t much time to build trust, even during the Sylvari storyline. It felt like he was being shoved in our face during the Clawr Island arc, and that instantly made him unlikeable to many.

4. Praise without any exposition. We met Trahearne, and he seemed like an incredibly humble scholar, and he seemed okay. But then other NPCs continuously praise him, and we learn he’s some sort of HERO BADDASS WHO TRAVELED INSIDE AND OUT OF ORR LIKE IT’S NOTHING! Yet to Trahearne, he likes to be humble about it. Okay, that’s all fair, and if he’s a humble baddass, that’s pretty cool. But here’s the problem with that: We never actually learn about what he did. And I don’t mean publishing a short story online. I mean, we never learn, through interacting with characters, why they respect Trahearne so much? That gave players the false impression that he is a Mary Sue or the writer’s pet, and it rubbed us the wrong way.

Yet despite his flaws, most of them aren’t Trahearne’s character itself. Quite the contrary, he is the ONE character to properly thank us and give us credit for our actions, and he even gave us command of the ENTIRE Pact during the battle against Zhaitan!

So why do people hate him, Trahaerne himself? They think he is boring. Why is that? My guess is because we rarely saw him interacting with other characters, so he became too much of a machine simply to guide along the players of the Zhaitan storyline. If anything, Trahearne himself is the victim here, because ANET forgot about him even during his own story arc!

However, this concern about Trahearne can be addressed very easily, and there were a few instances where I felt genuinely interested in his character. During the Sylvari Personal Story, we got to see him interacting with Caithe, while during the Claw Island arc, he was humerously remarking upon his misadventures with Sieran, and he actually made me laugh! It was the few scenes like those, where we actually got to see his personality and interactions with others, which actually gave players an interest in Trahearne!

Sure, Trahearne is a stoic Necromancer who has confidence issues, who is still a little shy even at the party after you defeat Zhaitan. But at the same time, if done right, that personality can make him very loveable if he were to interact and respond to other characters.

What defines a character’s personality are tension, conflict, and their approach to problems. In Trahearne’s case, he is not too good socially, and he is quite shy. Interacting with Taimi and getting a little embarassed around her, is a good way to define who he is. Or perhaps even more interesting, his interactions with a muscle-head like Braham, since Trahearne is a scholar Necromancer who uses tactical reason over Braham’s brute force.

My point is that Trahearne can be good if done right, and killing him off would be a bad decision since it repeats what we were pre-conditioned to hate him in the first place. ANET should instead show the community that Trahearne can be repaired.

So for pete sake, PLEASE keep Trahearne alive! (And stop killing characters so much…)

You know that the next update is coming TOMORROW right…

The quantity that Arenanet puts out on a bi-weekly basis is astounding. No other game comes close to matching that output rate. If they had released an expansion people would already have finished that content and would now be waiting a long time for the next release.

Sorry that you don’t feel like it’s enough, but it is an incredible amount given the time frame and they’re doing a greta job. If you don’t like it please feel free to game hop?

19-Jun-14: Started small revisions, Staff finished
11-Sep-14: Revisions for Sept 9 patch
28-Jan-15: Revisions for Jan 27 patch
5-Aug-15: Updated for June 23 patch
14-Dec-15: Updating for Heart of Thorns

Introduction
This is an overview of the builds I commonly use in PvE. I have used all the weapon sets and think Staff and Warhorn Fresh Air builds are the strongest DPS, and Dagger/Focus is a great balance between damage and utility. I recommend that an Ele swaps traits and weapons to best fit the situation and party. If you have any questions about this guide or Ele’s in PvE, I respond fastest to mail and messages on Reddit (/u/DEKeyz) or contact in-game.

I also have a collection of video build guides.

Some things I’ve done on my Ele:
Make BIG NUMBERS like a 49k Firegrab
Solo Giganticus Lupicus
17s all Ele Lupi kill using FGS

So, I’ve considered posting this for a couple days now. I tend to lurk rather than posting. I realize this will likely fall on deaf ears, but after this weekend, I feel like it really needs to be said.

The attitude on the forums, and the response from the community over the past week (and even before that) is appalling. Every new thread is created to somehow belittle or bash the Anet dev team, or to negatively criticize every aspect of the game (whether part of the new update or not). And it isn’t just in General – it’s happening in PvP, in WvW, in the Profession forums, all of them. Is this criticism valid? Certainly – there are threads created for the exact purpose of collecting that information (and no, we don’t need to keep making 9 different threads on the same topic). But the tone of that criticism has reached an all-time low, and it’s turned the forum into a toxic mess. We’re no longer in the territory of constructive, positive discussion that a forum like this is here to encourage.

The general consensus of the community appears to be one where we expect the dev team to be chained to their desks 24/7, fixing every mistake and catering to every whim of any player who feels like our gameplay has somehow been diminished. I mean, just look around – you’ll find it in almost every new thread that’s been created this week. How does this kind of feedback – the whining, the complaining, the bashing, the lack of patience, the anger – actually help the game or promote any kind of meaningful discussion? Everyone seems to be shocked at the lack of responses from the dev team about issues – is it really any wonder why? If I were them, I wouldn’t respond to anything either, considering the community won’t be happy with whatever they have to say (or even if its what they want to hear).

Have there been problems this week? Certainly. Could things have been rolled out differently? Probably. But in no way does that excuse how this community has reacted. We dare say the Anet team can’t have a bloody holiday weekend to themselves? Of course they can! Who are you to say they don’t deserve one? (And there are threads where this exact statement is happening).

Lets use the Megaserver as an example. For those complaining about the megaservers, have you even considered that releasing this update this week, in this way, is intended? The Megaserver system is a BIG deal. And the devs have said repeatedly that its an ongoing system. I mean, the update isn’t even a week old! How do you expect the dev team to make any meaningful changes to the system to improve things, when they don’t even have enough data yet to determine what those changes should be? It’s called patience, and this community could use a huge dose of it.

Altogether, I know this thread isn’t going to deter the community’s reaction to the new content. I know it’s not going to correct anything. But I’m hoping that, if you support the dev team, their hard work, and their efforts to give us something great to play, you’ll post in here and let them know.

I love the new updates, and I know that I for one can’t wait to see what’s coming for us next

Greetings!
We want to give you an update on our rollout of the megaserver technology. It is progressing nicely, and we have turned it on on the following maps:

  • The Grove
  • Heart of the Mist
  • Black Citadel
  • Timberline Falls
  • Southsun Cove
  • Rata Sum
  • Straits of Devastation
  • Fields of Ruin
  • Brisban Wildlands
  • Hoelbrak
  • Iron Marches
  • Blazeridge Steppes
  • Dredgehaunt Cliffs

As a reminder – once we turn megaserver on for a specific map, you will not be automatically placed in the new map. You have to leave the map and enter it again. You will also not be able to join your friends until they do the same.

We are continuously monitoring the process and will continue rolling the tech out to more maps based on that. Have fun playing!

Feature Update - Missed what's really needed.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ahmrill.7512

When I heard of a “feature” update I got excited. I thought… finally they are going to address the most needed features in the game. The ones people have suggested and complained about not having for almost two years since the first Beta Weekend event.

And you dropped the ball Anet.

Are the new features nice? Sure… some of the features are things that will enhance GW2 overall. Things like “last logged” in guild feature and “account bound WXP” are things I’ve seen requested for a long time. All the rest is basically Fluff content and I have a hard time actually seeing many requests for those features over the last two years.

What I can’t understand is how one of the most basic and requested features was ignored. That being “The basic ability to organize and group the way players and guilds enjoy.” Gw2 gives us a grand total of TWO ways to organize and group. Either a 5 person group or a massive zerg with no control over the size or makeup of that force. WvW is where this needs changed most, but it would be useful for PvE events as well. Gw2 currently has the worst grouping system I’ve used in at least the last 7 years of MMO gaming.

Since the first BWE players have asked for better grouping systems. After 19 months of asking they created a Collaborative thread asking for extensive feedback from players about the Commander and Squad system.

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/wuv/wuv/Collaborative-Development-Commander-System/first

Players gave tons of feedback and some of the most requested features were having Private and Guild only squads to allow players to organize and form forces the way they enjoy. So you can see why 4 months later when they announced a “feature” update I expected to see some C&S and grouping updates. I was very disappointed. Like many other players I find social grouping and running with my guild as an important part of MMO gaming. Something I’ve been frustrated with on a daily basis because of the lack of tools to do so.

I’m sure you have “plans” to address this at a future date Anet. But it’s your lack of priority on what players would like vs what generates gemstore revenue that’s most disappointing.

Likes:
-No more bouncing around and using out of the game programs to keep up with events
-No more getting stuck in an overflow where the event isn’t happening
-Guilds can trigger mega events on their own time

Dislikes:
-Can’t see dungeon and WP status, meaning we have to spend nearly twice as much money to get where we want.
-Gathering nodes are going to be a pain now since there are no fixed maps.

We need new classes instead of new races. Anything besides human has already been a waste of time and resources.

Some people refuse to play humans/norn/sylvari, you know. I was drawn to this game because they actually tried to be different by creating the asura and charr, and the sylvari (even though humanoid) are still pretty cool too. And I still haven’t gotten far in GW1 because I have to play another stinky human. Also, this game should have a new race before a new class, simply because balance issues. I vote for Tengu because they are the most creative concept of the unplayable races and are already set up to potentially be playable. From the concept art I’ve seen they look very colorful, they might even put sylvari colors to shame. And a samurai class to go with would be neat, but it’s probably best to save a new class for later.

I’m only here because sometimes I just like to watch things burn.
