Mirage - gearing?

Marsares.2053

Haven’t played in over a year but considering coming back for the expansion.

My old gear is a legendary staff and full Ascended gear (although it’s Beigarth’s – Power/Precision/Toughness).

The legendary staff I can easily swap the stats around, but for gear Beigarth’s doesn’t look good as Mirage seems mostly condition based. What would be the best-in-slot gear be? Should I craft new Ascended and, if so, what would be the stat combo be – Morbach’s with Condi/Vitality/Toughness?

Any help would be appreciated, can at least get myself ready for when the expansion hits.

I was really hoping for a power-based lockdown spec, but alas. Mirage looks still intriguing, although I’ve never been a fan of condi-spam.

Make a Spellbreaker.

Actually that’s what I’m doing – going to make a Warrior alt for it. Always been a one character only mind of player, never had any serious alts, but I really want to play Spellbreaker.

I know I know, I thought about it. But leaving the Mesmer behind just makes me feel dirty. It’s the only class I’ve really played and I just can’t see myself playing anything else.

Quit a year ago to come back a month or so ago and to only find it in worse state than I left. The Meta wasn’t great back then (think HamBow) but at least it was more twitch based, compared to the brain-dead condi-spam and passive that seems to rule the roost now. Throw in the power-creep from HoT and you have a dull and unbalanced game-mode.

Sure, I can go condi bunker Mesmer as well and face-roll my keyboard, but it’s just a skill-less game play that does not interest me. Just quit my guild and will quit the game soon. I’m sure some people still find PvP fun, it’s just not for me and I now remember why I quite a year ago and didn’t miss it GW2 PvP.

Been running Messiah’s build, but then with the minor changes that skcamow suggested in his treat about “Chrono Bruiser Redux” and it’s a really fun build, plus a solid one as well.

I clearly underestimated the power of boons and how prevalent they are in the current Meta and stripping multiple people constantly off them, whilst applying them to allies is just so powerful. I’m not a good player by any stretch of the imagination, but I generally get 100k+ damage and 250+ damage absorbed and 300-500 boons applied to allies. This whilst sticking on one or two points, so I’m not even fighting all the time.

Solo it has a fair chance against most classes, although I really struggle against thieves. However, the class really shines whilst you fight alongside someone and just buff the crap out of them.

Thanks for sharing this build!

Some interesting ideas there. Thanks, RossBiddle.

Currently I’m running my old-school build in unranked, mostly because it’s what I’m used to and I’ve been out of the game for over a year, so seemed a sensible starting point to get my skills up again on something I’m familiar with before I try something new:

http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?vhAQRAsa7cl0nhG1YZawGNwsGLnGV5I0cJQ90etbLZAsABFA-TJBCQBD4gAAgTAgDLDsv9HAA

It’s pretty purist in it’s setup and tries to maximise the interrupts. However, I do feel I miss out on the Chrono trait. There’s not much interrupt in that trait line, but the Alarcity seems just too good to miss out on. Also debating about swapping out off-hand pistol for shield if I go down the Chrono route.

The more I play the more disillusioned I get to be honest. Yes, a lot of the builds can work in unranked or wvw roaming as most people aren’t that good, but in general it just breaks down against better players. In order to be competitive you’re basically pigeon-holed into one or two builds, neither of them which I really like.

Starting to think my return to GW2 may be short-lived. PvP is in worse state than when I left to be honest.

You’ll probably find it’s not so much the players, and more the elite specs. So if you played ranked and faced meta builds, the inherent qualities introduced with HoT are what’s shutting lockdown play out of the game, and they won’t even have to be skilled to do it. Which is why Anet won’t be able to “fix” it.

It’s a shame but, ohwell.

Makes sense, thanks for clarifying. It does feel a bit that in their desperation to shift as many HoT boxes as possible, they’ve thrown the kitchen-sink at it and made the elite specs almost mandatory. Will persist a bit more with the LockDown build in various different settings and see how it goes.

@RossBiddle Thank you. That is utterly discouraging, but also explains why I’ve had so little success with my previous build, to the point of a few nerd-rages. :-)

I think one of your builds was actually the inspiration for my version of LockDown back in the day, it’s what I enjoyed playing most, but seems that in the current Meta I’ll have to look for something else.

Such a shame though, there are a lot of interrupt related traits dotted across four trait lines, it should be an integral part of any Mesmer build and a LockDown build should be a good option. Guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens with the pending class balance changes and if that will allow a return to a LockDown build.

Edit: been running the pre-HoT Duel/Dom/Chaos Staff + Sword/Sword Mantra Lockdown spec to surprising good effect. Granted, it was in unranked PvP and most opposition was pretty bad and it’ll probably fall apart against good players, but it was still better than I thought it was. A glimmer of hope. :-)

Very interested in this thread. I quit GW2 over a year ago and only recently came back, but back in the day I used to run a Staff + Sword/Sword Dom/Duel/Chaos lock-down Mesmer, also specialising in interrupts and preventing the enemy from having a fair fight, but probably more close-combat focussed then yours as you run GS.

It did suffer the same drawbacks as RossBiddle mentioned (vulnerable to conditions due to limited cleansing and you had to get in range in order to be effective) and it certainly wasn’t the Meta build back then, nor the most effective, but definitely the one that I enjoyed more. I tend to solo roam, and a lock-down build is generally not something people expect.

I’ve been running the cookie-cutter power GS + Sword/Shield Chrono build since I returned, but this thread has inspired me to dabble again with a more pure lock-down build. I’m just curious to see if I can make it work with Staff as for whatever reason I never liked the game-play that a GS offers.

The problem is that the daze/interrupt traits are spread across Domination, Duelling, Chaos and Chrono. Have to give up something…

If you as a class create a build that it’s largely centred around auto-attacks, then another class should be able to punish you for it. That’s where powerlock comes into play.

I don’t see anything wrong with it. A skill that requires timing, understanding your enemy and tactical play punishes builds that let their ‘1’ key do the work. How it should be.

I don’t see how powerlock in its current form should be “fixed”, as I don’t see anything that’s wrong with it and changing it will make it underwhelming at best.

It’s centred around tactical play and knowing your opponent, and thus should give you a good reward in turn. It’s also single target, so it’s not like it’s going to have a major impact on anything outside 1v1. And the fact that it works on auto-attacks is how it should be… if you as a class create a build that relies on AA’s, then you should be punished for it.

Paying a monthly sub doesn’t guarantee a better game or that the devs will listen to you.

It doesn’t, but there’s a higher likelihood.

1) Business Model A (i.e GW2): your players have paid up-front (i.e. box sales) and little revenue is derived from them further on (i.e. in-game store). Ergo, why listen to your existing users as if you lose them, you don’t lose revenues (although your brand gets damaged eventually)? The minor ongoing revenue is also in all likelihood not enough to sustain major game development. The main focus is on penetrating new geographies, as this is the only way to generate major one-off revenue streams.

2) Business Model B: you get major revenue from box-sales at launch, followed by significant revenue streams through ongoing subscriptions. Your main costs are likely to be recouperated at launch, thereby allowing you to utilise your ongoing revenue streams for major development and frequent patches, which will create word-of-mouth and hopefully additional subscribers. The main focus is on keeping your users happy through development, potentially followed by penetrating new geographies.

I can bet which model will generate more frequent patches and more major development. I happily paid for Warhammer for more than two years and having played a “F2P” game like GW2 with virtually no investment from Anet, I’m more than happy to take my chances and pay for TESO.

Also, polls like this don’t matter. It doesn’t matter which game is “better”. It’s horses for courses, what works for some, doesn’t work for others. What is obvious though is that a significant portion of GW2 players are leaving or at breaking-point. PvP is a waste-land and WvW is getting less and less populated.

People are leaving and it doesn’t matter if they go to TESO or not, what the real question should have been is: “Will you be playing GW2 in 6 months time?”. That poll would have been quite different…

Are you tired of ACs yet?

in WvW

Posted by: Marsares.2053

Marsares.2053

Well, given that with zoom-hack and other abilities, a higher position doesn’t really give you any advantages in-game and golem-rushes can reduce a T3 tower to pulp within minutes, ACs are often the only reliable counter available.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a big fan of them, but they have their purpose. The last few months, the match-ups for my server have been horrible and we’re constantly outnumbered. ACs are often one of the few things standing between a handful defenders on our side and a 40+ blob of enemies.

Where I have issues is when servers that clearly outnumber you, then hide behind ACs when you do manage to muster a force to push them a bit.

Huge drop down in WvW population ?

Marsares.2053

Yesterday was a prime example of all that’s wrong with the game. I woke up early so got into EB, with probably about 8 other people of our server. Kodash has nobody online it seemed, Baruch Bay about 4-5 tops. We capture SM after some fight, but know we can’t keep it as we’re normally massively outnumbered, so we decide to siege it up a bit so we can hold opposition off whilst we siege up and upgrade our own towers/keep.

After a few hours with hardly any opposition, we got all our towers to T2/3 and or keep to T3 with in all some decent siege. Then suddenly a 40+ BB zerg rocks up out of nowhere and sweeps all that’s in front of them. However, when they notice 2-3 defenders in one of our towers, they move on to a empty one, PVE that and then go back to the earlier one that by then has no defenders left as we’re running around trying to cover all our bases. Eventually, all that is left is our keep. It’s T3 with some good siege in it, so it won’t be easy to take, but it’s 6v40+. Yet, the moment the first arrows of the AC fall on them, they pull back, port out and go PVE an empty BL.

We quickly recap our towers and I go roaming, as that’s what I do. For forty minutes – I kid you not – I do not see a single enemy in EB. Yes, it was early morning, but they clearly had a 40+ zerg that just evaporated. Eventually I end up at their spawn, wait their for 15 or so minutes and – lo and behold – a player comes out of spawn. Wait?! What’s that….? 40+ people players behind him. Obviously the karma train in an empty BL has moved back to EB.

And that karma train does the same thing… PVEs everything whilst actively avoiding any resistance, then ending up at our keep. At that stage we got 15 people, keep is T3 with lots of Superior Siege in there and 1,400 supplies. We can give them hell, but hey ho… our commander decides it’s not worth defending and goes to an empty BL, taking a lot of people with him. Eventually it’s 3v40+ and we lose a T3 keep.

That’s why people leave. Easy-moding PVE karma-training and not “losing” by actively avoiding any fight makes you feel good about yourself, but eventually it’s get stale.

Huge drop down in WvW population ?

Marsares.2053

Nothing realty changed in wvw ppl are just working out the best ways to play it and its very hard to get into wvw and do well with out knowing a lot of tricks. In some ways wvw has become very hardcore type of game play. This is how a lot of games work out in the long run.

I agree that you have to know a certain amount of tricks in order to be effective, but other than that I politely disagree with your statement that WvW has become very hardcore. In reality, it’s become completely the opposite precisely because of these tricks, as every single one of them encourages non-hardcore game-play.

- Numbers > Skill: with no AOE cap and easy rezzing through down-states, all that really matters are numbers. That’s why people constantly run in massive blobs. As a small organised group you can still do decent against larger groups, provided that they’re disorganised PUGs. Once the bigger group has even a modicum of organisation, as a smaller group you can harrass them, and that’s about it.

- 2 Keys > 10 Keys: in a zerg, everyone has a particular role to play and when lag goes through the roof, most people let auto-attack do the work or press a few buttons at most. However, as a small group or solo roamer, you actually get forced to learn your class and your opponents as you can’t hide as a faceless number in the zerg.

- PVE > PVP: everything in this game encourages PVE, rather than PVP. Which is obviously ironic for a PVP game. There’s no decent rewards for defending and a heavily defended T3 tower that gets taken after an hour long battle gives similar rewards to a T1 one that gets steam-rolled in a few minutes. That’s why people actively avoid the fight and PVE karma-train.

- Coverage > Strategy: there is no need for strategy when the outcome is already decided by who has the most numbers and who has the best coverage. PPT has become a side-game that only a few people care for, realm-pride has gone out of the window. The only strategy left is to find the path of least resistance and karma-train that.

- Offense > Defense: with no clear rewards for defending, less and less people care about upgrading things, placing/refreshing siege and generally defending objectives. Yesterday, one of our commanders abandoned EB for an empty BL without even trying to defend our T3 keep. The mind boggles. What are left with is active keep-trading for karma.

In short, GW2 encourages zergs and PVE. As a casual you can log on for an hour, hobble along with the zerg, take some objectives, get some loot/mat/gold and in general feel good about yourself. There’s nothing hardcore about that. In fact, I’d go as far as arguing that GW2 WvW is the least hardcore competitive realm-vs-realm I’ve done in any MMO.

Now, one could argue that in prime-time it’s hardcore when organised guilds slug it out against each other, even then I’d disagree. None of these guilds have the exact same numbers, plus there’s a lot of add-ins. More often than not, the outcome is decided by this.

Obviously, in organised GvG events, it’s somewhat more hardcore as skills/numbers are pretty much equal, whilst numbers are exactly equal. However, even then it’s hardly hardcore. All guilds pretty much run the same setups/strategy (i.e. hammer-trains) and there’s relatively little skill involved in that: pump might and boons, run in, pop stability, lay down a veil, end up in a big cluster-kitten with two balls of players running over each other whilst AOE CC and damage does the work. Grossly simplified, but that’s the gist of it. There’s very little targetting, very little assisting… once everybody has gotten accustomed to their role and sticks close to the commander, you’ll do fine enough.

And I personally believe this is exactly why WvW has taken such a drop. Game-play is one-sided (i.e. offense, but really avoiding fights and karma train), there’s no strategy left in the game with fewer and fewer people defending, numbers and coverage decide the outcome of a match-up, and for real hardcore players (i.e. solo roamers, small hit-squads and organised guilds) there’s little left.

Wow.
I didn’t think this game would fall that far that fast.
Seems GW2 might not even make it to the split, when TSO and Wildstar are released.

Subscription MMO’s affecting GW2? Lol, no.

Of course it will. I bet there’s a sizeable portion of WvWers and PvPers who are happy to play $15/month with the expectation of better and faster patches. I’m one of those and I know a fair few others. I paid for 2.5 years for Warhammer, had no issues with it.

And even if people may not leave for another MMO, they’ll leave for other games. People are burned out on Coverage Wars with no major improvements since launch and none in sight. WvW population is already a lot less than half a year ago, it’s just so noticeable these days especially now with karma and champion trains in EOTM 24/7.

It’s of course not a guarantee that frequent patching will happen with ESO, but if their business model is based on monthly paying customers that drive their revenues and profits, they’re much more likely to listen and actually do something.

I mean, after 1.5 years what do we have to show for in GW2 WvW or PvP? Especially something as simple as balance patches takes more than half a year. I still love GW2 but I doubt I’ll wait until the “feature” patch early summer 2014.

Take a look at the posts around here…

If I were the devs, I certainly wouldn’t be in any hurry to serve up any new content for the entitled jerks that believe it’s their right to constantly berate the company giving them free updates on their $60 game.

If I were a dev, I wouldn’t have an ounce of motivation to quickly provide additional content.

If I were a dev, I wouldn’t have an ounce of motivation to try to deliver truly high quality content.

Because at the end of the day, they only thing they’ll get in return from the community is more complaints and more finger pointing.

The only thing you get in the short-term is that indeed.

However, the only thing you get in the long-term is a tarnished brand that people will refuse to play should in due course GW3 come out. GW2, after all, is not going to be here forever. The average life-span of a MMO (with the exception of the likes of WOW and EVE) is only a few years. After Warhammer, is anyone really going to play a MMO by Mythic? After SWTOR is anyone going to touch a MMO made by EA?

Your argument is very short-sighted and no respectable company will take such a course as they shoot themselves in their own foot. It’s business 101.

I agree with you that people should not resort to insulting people, or anything of that ilk. However, let’s be honest, there’s only one party to blame for this toxic environment on the forums: Anet. Let’s look at the facts:

- Very little and confusing communication from Anet
- Insanely touchy-feeling moderators that delete anything that they think is negative
- Incredibly little PvP improvements over the last one and a half years
- Class balance that is very much out of whack and favours a few “chosen sons”
- Class balance that has gotten progressively worse since Beta
- PvP patches that are very few and far between and incredibly slow
- Hardly any additional maps and no additional game modes
- The notion of eSports that has gone all but down the drain
- Hardly any interesting rewards and PVE always has significantly better rewards
- High-level indicative patch notes that clearly show they are not addressing the things that matter
- Moderator posts / patch notes / Ready Ups that made it evident that the balance team clearly don’t understand classes (i.e. Mesmer being one of them) and have no clue what to do with them

From my point of view, when the game launched things were pretty kitten good for a newly launched game. However, whilst you expect steady improvements from there on, there’s been a dearth of them and those that have happened have mostly made PvP worse.

Worst of all, Anet is currently just stringing people along… I mean, the “feature” allegedly won’t be till summer and – I can tell you already – will then introduce so many changes at once that there will be many unforeseen circumstances. We’ll end up with a different Meta, but even the Balance Team Q&A guy confessed that he didn’t quite know how it’d work out. Well, that gives a lot of confidence, doesn’kitten

What have we to show for after one and a half year? Did you honestly expect that things wouldn’t get toxic if Anet behaves like this?

I always have to laugh when somebody grossly exaggerates and calls a virtual character “cancer”. Seriously, get some perspective and have some respect for people who have this disease in real-life.

Using words like this just reinforces that you’re emotional about something, and thus not rational and that ultimately leads me to conclude that it’s a L2P issue. If you were rational, after all, you’d take the time to learn how they work and how to beat them.

Hell, I’ve beaten a fair few yesterday again on my non-PU non-stealth Mesmer with 17k health pool and zero condi cleanse. It’s simple. Do NOT kill their clones. And if things go wrong, run off… they have zero chance to catch you.

It really ain’t that difficult. But for forum warriors all that matters is their I-WIN button and if they suddenly can’t beat a class because they have to analyse, think, time their attacks, target and in general use their brains… oh no, the nerd rage hits and QQ on the forum ensues.

Same with a Warrior the other day, just insane regen and whenever I got him down to 10%, he broke off, rushed off, regen-ed all the way up and started the fight again. Let’s nerf them as well!

Hell, let’s nerf any class as I can’t be bothered to L2P on how to counter them.

20/20/30: The Best Lockdown Trait Spread?

I know this thread is mainly about tPvP, how about WvW?

Has anyone tried a lockdown style build extensively in small-man/solo WvW? I am going to start playing it, however I see a couple concerns as of now:

I run the classic Mind Crush spec whilst solo roaming in WvW. Traveller runes with zero condi cleanse, but with lemongrass soup for -40% condi duration. Works like a charm and most classes I can take down, although PU GS Power mesmers are a pain I’m finding.

The biggest problem in WvW is that it’s rarely a 1v1… Lockdown fights take a bit longer normally, and often then you’ve got somebody adding in. It’s not always easy to disengage.

Interesting idea on the 30/00/30/10/0 spec… I used to run Mindcrush without DE in sPvP so am used to less clone spam, it’ll give more daze and it’ll fix my weakness to conditions. Will definitely test that one out, thanks.

To be honest, the main thing I’ve learned to look for is whether they have stability up or not. If they do, it’s easily cleared with a quick Cry of Frustration w/ Shattered Concentration. I tend to like using Null Field somewhat offensively, too.

This is key. When people start out with Lockdown, they forget this. Diversion is your main shatter with Lockdown, but when opponents have stability up, it’s wasted. So keep looking for that Stability icon on them, and if they have it… use your F2 shatter on them in order to strip their boons through the Shattered Concentration trait.

Once Stability is stripped off them, then you can start chaining your dazes/interrupts together. Learning to watch out for Stability is the first step, the second step is starting to understand your opponents animations and what to interrupt.

I can’t wait… those tool-tip fixes always create a flutter of excitement in my belly.

On a serious note though, it’s a kind of sad state of affair that when ANet eludes to some interesting changes, the community as a whole is so disillusioned (appropriate word for the class, I’d say) with the class and the management of the Mesmer and class balance in general that they just don’t believe that any positive changes will materialise.

If a game is at such a state with its community, it’s on a very slippery slope indeed… I hope the big feature patch can restore confidence, create a clear role for the Mesmer and restore a place in the Meta of the various game-modes for us.

I heard a couple of times that Mesmers get used in zergs for a couple of their utilities (Portal, Veil and Mass Invisibility etc.) but isn’t that great?
We bring something very unique to the table that can be used to your great tactical advantage!

There’s nothing great about it. To make the most of these utilities – which are great, there’s no denying that – you generally need 1-2 Mesmers per zerg. Our whole class also gets reduced to these very few utilities, as that’s the only reason we’re there for… anything else we can contribute, other classes do generally better. That’s why people refer to being a veil-bot or portal-bot, as you only need a person who can press a few keys on command, that’s all we contribute to a zerg.

Mesmer still is decent as solo-roamer, but again we’re being pushed out of the meta here as a lot of thief builds just hard-counter us. Sure, you can take out a decent portion of thieves, but in general they’re again better at it then we are. And then there’s other classes that are getting more and more a look-in here such as, for example, warriors. People keep saying we’re the best 1v1 class and that we’re OP here… I disagree with this. You can see in tPvP that the Mesmer has been pushed out of the Meta, most notably by the thief.

We’re still good 1v1, but we’re definitely not in the number one spot. PU Condi indeed remains very strong, but has severe limitations whilst also being a play-style that a lot of people don’t enjoy (I personally prefer power-based or hybrid specs, rather than condi ones). The only reason why people keep saying it is because the class is designed to confuse, and it does indeed confuse people who don’t understand our mechanics who then subsequently cry foul.

Like you say, small-scale is probably where our sweet spot is but then you have to run in a well-organised group and if the Mesmer isn’t played well, we quickly become a liability. Shatter works well in small-scale, but has a high skill ceiling. Lock-down can contribute very well too, but requires intimate knowledge of your opponents. PU power works is in a decent spot as well and is probably most forgiving.

Try some of those builds in small-scale and you’ll find you’ll still enjoy playing your Mesmer. And, who knows, given that it has been eluded to that we’ll get some good things in the next patch, new builds may become available and/or the whole Meta shifts and we may suddenly find ourselves in a different position.

I hope they’re taking us more towards Lockdown specs as it’d create more of a specific role for the Mesmer. Perhaps they would give us some of the GW1 abilities that the Mesmer had there:

I have never played GW1 so I can’t judge how the Mesmer was there, but running 20/20/30 or 30/20/20 Lockdown specs most of the last three months, I do have a feeling that something is missing. Most of our abilities are focussed on Daze/Interrupt/Stun, it’d be nice if there would be other ways mixed in to create a sense of Lockdown.

This thread gives some impression with the GW1 Mesmer had and – truth be told – I like the concept of quite a few of them. It just adds more depth to the GW2 Mesmer, which does appear a bit shallow compared to the GW1 one:

[PvP] Mesmer Moa Skill = Death Sentence

Did some tPvP tonight and we faced the same team twice with a Mesmer who actually ran the Moa elite. Haven’t seen one in ages and – lo and behold – got Moa-ed three times in two matches and avoided it twice because he was constantly focussing on me.

Didn’t die once whilst Moa-ed.

I honestly don’t understand how you can die to this… once Moa-ed you leap, run away, dodge roll a few times and you’re back to your normal self.

You only die if you don’t take the time to learn what the skills mean when you’re Moa-ed and then panic when you’re Moa-ed and forget it all. And that’s really a L2P issue.

Well, we don’t exactly know what they’ll nerf until patch notes are released. Until then we should hold our breath and hope for the best.

I’ve given up hope on Anet getting off their backsides and doing something useful for a change. This has been broken since Beta like you said… if they wanted to fix it, they would have done so a long time ago.

Yet, very few skills are so integral to many of our builds… I can’t believe they’ve let this linger on for so long. I’ve made so many posts about it, I lost count.

I assume you mean this http://pastebin.com/dmACCzwx

I absolutely don’t hope that these are the patch notes, although history have told us it’s more than likely to be true. It’s mostly nerfs, with some minor buffs in areas that don’t really matter whilst not addressing any of those things that truly matter.

If these are the patch notes, we all might as well re-roll as clearly they have no intention of fixing the bugs that plague the class or address those issues that keep us out of the meta. We’ve been waiting for eight months or so, and this is what we’d get? Just depressing, plainly depressing…
