So they stored the stack counter as a single byte (max value 255, cut off at 250 for a more convenient number), then changed that to two bytes (max value 65536) and sell sections of 250 stack size increments for 10 bucks each. Pure genius.

Risk of collateral damage (especially with the Searing Cauldron) to the surrounding area which is still very much populated with peaceful / friendly races, and who knows how many people have been taken captive inside the tower. There’s hints that at the very least one of the Asura researchers from the camp has been taken.

If the krait have hostages, it makes sense to not simply nuke the thing. Otherwise, the only collateral damage would be more krait, some centaurs and bandits. I say we free the hostages then nuke the tower from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

Dec 10th - Water Trait Changes

Yepp, I am not pleased either. I was ok with the initial batch of proposed changes, but the latest additions effectively destroy half of my build.
I summed up my thoughts about that here in the main thread.

December 10th Elementalist changes

in Elementalist

Posted by: Mephane.8496

Mephane.8496

So, according to dulfy, they made the following additional changes:

  • Arcane Resurrection is going up to master tier instead of Renewing Stamina.
  • Windborne Dagger is going to function outside of combat.
  • Soothing Disruption is moving to master tier.
  • Cantrip Mastery is moving to adept tier.
  • Soothing Wave redesign: Gain Regeneration(3s) on incmoing critical hits. 10s recharge.

As a defensive+support-oriented staff elementalist with cantrips (pure PvE) from day 1, what do you think I should now from water tier 1? The gist of my build is, water circles, all aoe boons from switching to water etc. are for the group, cantrips to rescue myself from danger.

I have always been running 0/0/10/30/30, using Aquamancer’s Alacrity, Soothing Disruption and Cleansing Water. The first issue of these changes left this build intact, but now that both Aquamancer’s Alacrity AND Soothing Disruption are going into the master tier, they exclude each other. What remains in the adept tier?

  • Shard of Ice – useless for support (not sure if useful at all)
  • Piercing Shards – useless for support; maybe usefull for some D/D builds?
  • Vital Striking – useless for support, otherwise questionable.
  • Arcane Abatement – nice for jumping puzzles, but who needs that in dungeons or fractals?
  • Soothing Wave – regeneration on receiving a crit? What use is this on top of the permanent regeneration I am distributing any way? This might be a nice addition for a PvP dps build, but other than that… /shrug
  • Cantrip Mastery – Nice in theory, but also useless for support, and with 3 cantrips the cooldowns are not really the limit. What I have been counting on since day 1 is the combination of cantrips + Soothing Disruption = regeneration, + Cleansing Water = remove condition. This will now be impossible without dropping Aquamancer’s Alacrity, which means less water fields for my group.

This is kind of depressing. I have been using the same functioning build for more than a year now, and I have to choose of either having the group support nerfed, or my own survivability. Please at leave either Soothing Disruption or Aquamancer’s Alacrity in the adept tier, these traits should not have to compete with each other.

Combat armor after ending "Ride Broom"

This bug has been around for some time, it started a few months after halloween 2012, I had hoped that it would be fixed for this year’s halloween at last, but that apparently did not happen:

- Equip the “broom” toy (the one with costume brawl skills from the witch costume).
- Engage in costume brawl. Need not even hit a player, just use attack skill #1 once.
- Hop onto the broom with the “Ride Broom” skill #4.
- Get off the broom with skill #1.

Then you end up in regular combat armor instead of town clothes; costume brawl mode is still active and you are attackable. If you just hop onto the broom without having engaged costume brawl mode, you will stay in town clothes.

There is currently an awkward workaround by opening the hero panel and manually re-equipping town clothes, which is a dangerous thing when you are possibly surrounded by other costume brawlers.

And still the entire Opening Strike mechanic remains. Everywhere where your damage really counts, i.e. in bossfights, prolonged event fights etc., you will stay in combat far too long for an initial crit to matter at all. I know remorseless was meant as a solution for this problem, but

a) I use the Longbow stealth skill as a defensive measure when I get aggro, I don’t have stealth on cooldown for the sake of it.
b) It competes with Eagle Eye.

The minor traits in a line should not depend on a grandmaster trait (or any major trait, that is) to be useful, but be useful on their own merit. And in this case ALL minor traits in the line are just that, Opening Strike. I hereby suggest merging Alpha Training and Precise Strike into the new Master Minor Trait and make Remorseless the Grandmaster Minor Trait. Alternatively, scrap the mechanic entirely.

Elementalist under water skills miss target

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Mephane.8496

Mephane.8496

It is now more than one year after release and this bug still persists. The elementalist under water skills Rock Blade and Forked Lightning sometimes fail to hit their targets. When the bug strikes

- the projecticles fly straight past the target, usually above them, very closely,
- no “miss” floating text appears,
- if you are not in combat, you do not enter it
- you do not pull a mob that is not in combat, or generate any aggro otherwise,
- both skills are always affected together, i.e. either both work or both don’t.

Steps to reproduce: log in as an elementalist, go under water, attack some mobs with Rock Blade or Forked Lightning. It is nigh impossible to do Daily Aquatic Slayer without encountering this bug several times.

It appears to be completely random when the bug happens. Changing positions generally does not alleviate it. Sometimes it seems that the projectiles start hitting again, but I have not found any pattern as to when they will hit and when they don’t.

The two skills have in common that both shoot three projectiles in a spread pattern, which is what I assume is connected to whatever causes the bug in the first place.

I think it’s actually been confirmed that the Asura give live birth by someone at Anet? At least, I remember hearing that somewhere on the forums.

I don’t have a link, but I once even read an answer in an interview that asura are mammals. Don’t forget not all mammals have such pronounced mammarial glands. Humans and cows are rather the exception.

Personally, I always regarded the fact that asura have no different clothes between males and females (besides underwear, but well) as a distinct cultural feature where gender equality is just natural for them.

Dear ArenaNet,

would you please stop creating greatly different looking armor between genders? You may vary the amount of skin revealed, the precise shape of the shirt, the size of shoulder pads etc., but there is no reason for these discrepancies:

Female human

Male human

It is already very bad with the Aetherblade armor skins, where the light armor helmet is very different between male and female versions. But the new Phoenix armor basically consists of two completely different sets, which also means some styles are never available for asura because they are wearing unisex clothes which translates to the male versions of all armor*.

(*Please do not interpret this as me asking for splitting up asura armor into female and male versions. I love how they are just having unisex clothes because they don’t care about such differences the way humans do.)

bail now pls. bye. dont stop new content for others.

For the slim chance you might actually take this to your heart and rethink your position: no one here complains about stuff coming every two weeks. We complain about stuff going away again after a month.

I think people complaining about temporary content dont understand the crucial part – no matter how much you missed, much more is waiting you ahead.

And that’s really cool.

And how does content have to be temporary to have “much more waiting ahead”? This is a false dichotomy, one does not exclude the other. Stop thinking we want to take content away or keep it from coming. We want to keep it from going away!

Releases every two weeks is too much

in Living World

Posted by: Mephane.8496

Mephane.8496

Why go on holiday? You’ll wind up back home anyway. Why get that cut of steak you really like? It’ll be eaten in minutes. Why watch the big game? One of the teams will win and suddenly everyone’s talking about next year. Why go see the travelling circus? They’ll just pack up and go elsewhere.

I understand and partially agree with the desire for more permanency (yes that’s right, this post is not arguing against having more permanent content) but the enjoyment you had with updates doesn’t get erased when the content is removed.

The difference is, many of us play characters in virtual worlds precisely because most real world limitations are gone. That’s why fantasy games with wizards and dragons are so popular. A fine example for the circus equivalent in MMOs even exists: The Darkmoon Fair in WoW changes locations regularly, being unavailable in the meantime while they “travel”. Yet it never disappears altogether, and you can quite easily travel to the other end of the world within minutes if it is currently there and you want to visit it.

The thing is, the default state for digital content is permanent. Once it is created, the data is there, it takes deliberate effort to replace it with something else (e.g. next Living World installment). And it ArenaNet could very well entered this 2 week release schedule without taking content away afterwards, if they wanted to. I an 100% convinced this has been a pure marketing decision, so that players feel more pressured to play all the time (yet another aspect where they did a 180° turn from the manifest). I won’t buy any of the excuses. If new content is to come every 2 weeks so people don’t complain how bored they are, it won’t affect the content locusts whether it disappears or not – they will always move on to the newest stuff anyway, here or by switching games.

Just imagine, for a moment, we could have all the living world content, all the updates, armor and weapon skins, gem store items, everything – permanently – without compromising the 2 week schedule, without even antagonizing the content locusts.

I’ll stick with the game for as long as I can endure this, but I do know that there will be a point where I’ll be so fed up with temporary content that I either just leave, or only log in sporadically for some RP, not playing the actual game content or buying gems for stuff. I don’t mean this as a threat; it is just the way it has been for me in all MMOs. When I take a break, whether I will actually come back depends largely on how what stuff I missed out, and how hard it would be to catch up with the pace of the game.

GW2 is currently in a state where catching up is impossible because large portions of the content go away (and the stuff that stays so far is neglibigle – like we get to keep Belcher’s Bluff but Sanctum Sprint just disappears). Factor in to that the ascended grind. You’ll need multiple crafting professions at the new and extra-expensive to level up 500 crafting level, produce daily-time-gated account components and after months, a single might have the new max stat armor. Don’t even think about getting twinks on to that level.

GW2 started as a very light-hearted game. Just buy it, no subscription, play at your own pace, no pressure, no bad feelings. Now we are in constant stress mode – do this content now or you will miss it forever, reach all these achievements until the deadline to get the item skin that you would so love for your characters (oh and you get one consumable skin for only one character). Some people revel in that mode, others loathe it so much that they ignore it from the start. Me, I am typically and all or nothing type of player. At the moment, I try to keep up with the pace of new content coming and going. As soon as I cannot continue for whatever reason, I might just skip Living World entirely; but what remains then in the game, when all new content is like that? A deep feeling of disappointment, mostly.

Sticky target option

Mephane.8496

The problem is not that right-click targetting exists, but the way the game attempts to discern between right-click and right-drag. Generally speaking, it should only consider it clicked if the button is released within a certain fraction of a second, otherwise the player is dragging the camera with the mouse. At the moment, the game is too lenient in assuming the user wanted to click when indeed they are trying to drag.

Please don't introduce wow shoulder pads.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mephane.8496

Mephane.8496

I don’t mind large shoulderpads as long as they
a) don’t become the norm
b) they are of good quality
c) are not made to dominate the entire character appearance

The bad part about shoulderpads in WoW is how almost all armor pieces that are not shoulder or helmet are only the same handful of models, just retextured, then new models for giant shoulderpads and helmet strapped onto those recycled armor models. Oh and then there is the fact that armor in WoW generally looks like paper mache. You can’t even tell if something is supposed to be cloth, leather or metal. If you look at random screenshots of armor sets, without further information you can but guess what armor class they are.

Well I think it is good to voice concern early, because even the devs may miss an issue or consider it not important enough to deal with, by voicing our concerns we make clear in which way certain things matter to us.

Dev Tracker too cluttered

Posted by: Mephane.8496

Mephane.8496

Technically not a real bug, but the game suggestions forum seems even worse a place for this:

Currently, it is extreme tiresome to get any valuable information out of the Dev Tracker. All the many tech and account support messages are generally of little use for most users. Dev Tracker are normally used to find new dev posts about the game and its development, not messages informing a specific user that their issue has been forwarded or that an account problem has been solved. Great for them, but this is not the dev post we are looking for.

I hereby thus suggest the entire support section be exempted from the Dev Tracker.

Customer Trust

I think no one here is against the idea of free bonus stuff for purchasing gems. The problem is, people might buy a large batch of gems and spend those over weeks or months, or just happen not to find something interesting which they don’t already have in the gem shop for the given time period, yet spend a lot afterwards when new stuff picks their interest, etc.

Thus, the equation “support = bonus” does not apply. Someone who buys gems for a hundred bucks before the time window supports the game more than someone who only ever buys 10 gems in total, by sheer chance in the required time frame. Yet the latter is rewarded, the former not.

Also: enough with “it’s only a cosmetic”. Half the game is about cosmetics. We spend money on armor and weapon skins, and game time farming/crafting items purely for their appearance. It’s part of the entire point of the game, or MMOs in general, usually.

A surprise thank you gift seems thoughtful to me.

(…)

All that said, though, I am not sure what either tactic has to do with trust.

It is about one player getting a thank you gift, the one right next to them getting nothing, by the mere play of an otherwise irrelevant number (date of gem purchase).

Mephane.8496

No
It is not a bonus- it is a gift

If you announce the dates it is an incentive not a gift.
An incentive to buy gems is a totally different thing and yes it might get them more gem sales because people want free stuff.
That would play on people’s greed.

The mail I received with my Kite said Thank you for continuing to support the game, we appreciate it.
I appreciate that more than the kite and I love my kite.

A gift that you receive, by surprise, after a purchase is also intended an incentive to do further purchases in the future; “there might be a gift soon if I buy this month” is how it is meant to influence customer thought processes. It is basically the same, with added effect of luring some people into buying gems “just in case”. It is by pure chance whether someone might happen to buy gems in the right time frame or not, regardless of what they do outside that frame, and thus is not given for particularly “supporting the game”.

I Love the Kite!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Mephane.8496

I don’t want the issue raised above to fall by the wayside: bonus stuff for purchasing gems should always be announced during the active time frame. It would spur additional gem purchases and prevent a lot of bad blood afterwards.

Another issue, is that some people prefer to buy gems in bulk, then spend them over the course of weeks and months, while someone who just happened to buy the smallest amount of gems at the right time get free stuff. This is probably what happened to the guy who bought gems for 60 bucks, but before the time window was open, and now goes empty.

And the precedent is there. We had a full mini pack, now we have a kite. I think at this point, anything could come next, even weapon skins. If these bonuses are simply announced, like “buy gems for money from date x to date y and get a free z”, we’d have a win-win scenario: more gems will be sold, and no one is left out because they happened to still had gems left over from a larger bulk purchase before, or bought gems mere days after the window.

Obsidian Sanctum Campers at Kite [Merged]

in Bazaar of the Four Winds

Posted by: Mephane.8496

Mephane.8496

It’s interesting to see how some people act about the WvW Sanctum Kite…compared to the Sanctum Sprint. One group has people that actively prevent people from getting an achievement, while the other has people that try to help others get the achievement/title.

Very interesting.

It’s only the design of both activities that makes certain player behaviour stand out more.

A helpful player in Obsidian Sanctum might make a Mesmer portal over the chasm to the last segment of the puzzle, or might explain to you how to solve a certain part that you might find difficult. A helpful opposing player basically does nothing but run the puzzle, maybe talk others from their server to not attack anyone, but you can’t see this. Those who only want to intentionally ruin other players’ days on the other hand stand out, which attracts a certain mindset even more; camping choke points, attack from spots and ranges where they can hardly be fought back, ganking in superior numbers, or waiting top stab someone in the back at the worst moment, those are not signs of really skillful play (winning a true fight against an equal or even stronger opponent would be).

On the other hand, in Sanctum Sprint, placing fake boost, dishing out lightning stun etc. is happening all the time, you rarely ever know who actually did it; someone dedicated to ruin your day by placing before you can not do anything that is not happening anyway: run faster, use upgrades more tactically, in other words, their only option is to play very well. The one person who already has the title and let’s someone else finish first really stands out then.

You can find all types of players in both activities, but the very design of them makes different playstyles result in very different behaviour and outcome.

You get a weapon skin at 1000 and 2000 points, then at 3000 the gloves from either of the two semi-sets. After that, no one knows but ArenaNet. Could be the other two armor pieces at 4000 and 5000, meaning that the vast majority of people would only get two weapons in the foreseeable future, could also be armor pieces at 3000, 6000 and 9000. Or something completely different. In any way not being able to choose another weapon instead of an armor piece (and vice versa, actually) is extremely annoying.

When you can pick a weapon skin, all weapon types are included, the preview summary popup just does not show all of them, but “…” at the end. So you can get a rifle at 1000 points, pistol at 2000 points and shield at… oops 4000 points, 3000 points gives mandatory gloves.

Actually they are free. They cost you neither gold nor money. That is what determines whether something is free or not. In theory, you could even have quite a large number of achievement points just by playing a game.

Unless you equate playing a game to working (which some people do…but I don’t), then these skins are indeed free. In fact, you can’t buy them…they simply unlock.

The opposite of “free” is not “costs money” but “requires effort”, which may indeed be worded as “requires work” in a broader sense. Achievement points don’t just appear for doing nothing, and there are severe diminishing returns on what you can do to get more, up to a hard limit that is only raised by the amount dailies/monthlies give in the respective time span, and content patches that add additional, often time-limited, achievements. Unlike, for example, dungeon tokens, one does not simply walk into a zone and come out with more achievement points, but has to do specific activities that, once done, yield no more points.

There is a reason why some people salvaged gigantic piles of items, it was the only source of non-gated achievement points (disclaimer: I was not one of them).

How does one forfeit the other? They set it up in tiers. All you have to do is earn more points and you get to the next tier, and possibly unlock more weapon skins then. I’m not seeing the issue, since you’re constantly earning points and can eventually unlock everything.

I don’t get it. Because you don’t mind (or want the armor skins anyway), I am not supposed to be bothered, either? Read the forums, I am not the only one who does not want these armor pieces at all. If there were a choice between another weapon skin and an piece of armor skin, everyone would be happy, this includes you. So why exactly are you against this proposal?

Either way you’re gonna get them both for free, so why the heck are you complaining?

Because they are not free.

Also, because there are two fundamentally different choices now:

1000 points, 2000 points: pick a weapon type and receive a skin for it

vs

3000 points: receive a skin for a pre-determined item slot (gloves).

The second case is the equivalent of the 1000 point chest giving only a selection between different dagger skins, the 2000 point chest only giving greatsword skins etc.

And in anyway: everyone benefits from more choice, but some are hurt by the lack thereof. So why hurt some for no reason?

Of course, this works the other way round, too, and ideally you should be able to choose between all weapons and all armor skins at every multiple of 1000 points, so those who want the armor but not the weapons don’t have to unlock weapons.

Nor do I want Hellfire armor. Not dyable, no complete set, does not really fit light armor. Completely uninterested.

But the Zenith weapons are awesome. I have 7000 points now, so I reckoned I would get to pick 7 weapons. Apparently, no.

According to dulfy (see here: http://dulfy.net/2013/07/08/gw2-account-achievements-rewards-and-ui-revamp-overview/ ), at 3000 points I have to pick an armor piece and thus forfeit a weapon skin.

Why? Why force this upon us ? Why not simply add the armor skins to the selection of weapon skins, so it is our own choice?

Please, ArenaNet, rethink this before it is too late (i.e. people have opened the 3000 point chest). Let us choose between another weapon skin and an armor skin piece whenever currently only armor pieces can be received.

Longbow consolidation/redesign ideas

longbow is not an ideal 1on1 weapon, but does it have to be? … sometimes i think that is all everybody thinks about. Make every weapon viable in 1on1 situations to faceroll noobs. probably because they like the look or feel of the weapon but wish for higehr numbers or diffrente utility…

I like how you assume we all are a) PvP players and b) just want an easymode…

Looks like new armors won't be a set...

First, don’t have aegis on when you ss, second don’t have your glowy weapon in front of your armor.

I think that was the point, to demonstrate how it looks in combination.

The problem with rewarding Achievement points

There will only be a problem if they set the bar too high. As long as they adjust along the median number of achievement points, not the maximum or average, it should be alright. Add a title for those with 10k achievement points, but no more.

GW2 unlikely to get expansions [Interview]

I think the idea of doing frequent, smaller content updates instead of large expansion packs is a nice idea. However, these updates should almost exlcusively add permanent content and activities, and keep the temporary stuff to an absolute minimum.

Survey: 2 weeks or 1 month?

I also find 2 weeks too short an interval for living story updates, 1 month is much better. Between these updates I want more time to rest. I’ve not found the leisure to level up another alt because there is now almost always something to do with my main, on which I do not want to miss out because of playing alts.

Longbow consolidation/redesign ideas

There are some interesting and reasonable ideas here, however things I do not ever want to see:

- #1 as a ground target skill. Look how annoying Engineer with grenades is to play.

- Even higher shooting frequencies for #1 or #2. Imho a longbow should be more a sniper-like weapon: Medium to low fire rate, high damage, long range, fast velocity projectiles, difficult to dodge. Any way of buffing longbow damage should happen by increasing damage per shot, not shots per time!

- DoTs, i.e. burning, bleeding etc. Longbow is a currently designed for power builds. Changing that fact would mean longbow users would have to re-gear and, more importantly, be subject to the huge condition cap problem. And if I want to play a condition build, there already is the shortbow (which has some problems of its own, but there are other threads for that).

So here comes my wishlist for each skill:

  1. Remove range/damage tiers, always do damage of the highest tier. Increase that damage if still too weak. Do not increase fire rate. Bring back the pull-arrow-from-quiver animation.
  2. Remove channel, make it a charged shot, where the higher you charge it up, the more damage and the faster the arrow. 100% Projectile Finisher.
    Variants (maybe depending on traits?):
    a) No cooldown at all, rooted in place while charging
    b) Low cooldown (5-10s), useable while moving
  3. Reduce the cooldown to 10s, give the pet might in addition to swiftness.
  4. Keep knockback as it is, add cripple at all ranges. Make this our general skill for keeping enemies at bay.
  5. Shorter cast time, shorter cooldown (20s), add small blast finisher (20% chance) component.

Last but no least:
- Scrap the entire opening strike mechanic. I can’t emphasize this enough. The entire mechanic is nigh useless in dungeons, fractals etc. Merge those minor trait effects with Remorseless to make it an option we may choose, and give us useful minor traits instead.
