So I downloaded the x64 client and when I start the game it says “Unable to initialize 3D output. Please verify you have DirectX 9 installed and an updated video driver.” Well, I know I have D9 works because Guild Wars 1 works just fine, as does Skyrim, Fallout 4, and hell even Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries.
Off I go to update my NVidia drivers!
I rebooted my computer again and managed to manually delete the Guild Wars 2 folder and remove the program from the uninstall list.
I’m downloading the 64-bit client now. Hopefully this works!
After being gone for over a year I decided to run GW2 again. It immediately crashes on gw2-64.exe after it updated.
I tried a repair and it crashes again. So I restarted my computer. No change.
Finally, I decided to do an uninstall/reinstall of GW2, and it crashes on GW2-64.exe -uninstall.
At this point I’d be happy just to do a clean uninstall of the game so I can redownload it. Anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish this?
I don’t think you understand. From ANet’s perspective, nothing is messed up. This is exactly what they wanted (or if you believe what some people have told me privately, what NCSoft told them to do).
Either way, I’m seriously re-evaluating my desire to continue playing this game after being back 3 months. Tonight’s the first night I logged out from GW2 before finishing my daily’s. I normally did my daily’s in low level areas just to bump into new players and see if they had any questions. I also loved some of the events in low level areas, like the underwater Inquest Lab in Metrica Province. The removal of the events, nodes, mobs in this underwater area has really shocked me.
We are not China. Please stop trying to make NA/EU servers like China’s. Thank you.
This isn’t a slam on China. However, China is a different market than NA/EU and should be treated as such.
There is a 3rd party Action Combat mod which might be just what you are looking for. Googling ‘GW2 Action Combat mod’ should bring it up. The dev’s seem to be okay with it since it doesn’t actually offer an advantage.
Combat mod is verboten based on A.Net’s FAQ. They do not allow 3rd party mods to be used. Use at your own risk and if you are caught and banned, don’t come here to whine about it.
Not trying to cheat, just make it so I can play this game without further hand injury. RSI is a real issue for me.
Edit: I won’t be using Combat Mode now anyway, since it causes problems with my multiple monitor setup.
Furthermore, Double-Clicking on stacks again and again is quite a problem for me, too. Be nice if ANet made a right-click context option to “open all” which would use/open all the items in the stack until your inventory is full.

Combat Mode? Tried it, and it totally fubar’d my ability to used the mouse when alt-tabbing out of the game to my other monitor. Ended up having to reboot. Though honestly that’s pretty much exactly what I’m looking for.
I use an AutoHotKey script at the moment, all is does is hold down the RMB until I click it again. Basically a key press toggle. In combat I can just toggle it off to have mouse targeting for AOE’s, and I can easily toggle it off when I want to use my second monitor. It’s messy, but it works.
Honestly, it’d be nice if they had a simple way of having mouselook without having to hold down the RMB constantly. If they haven’t done it by now though I’m not holding out much hope.
Does ANet ever plan to enable a free look toggle option? Holding down the right mouse button constantly to look around is very painful on my hand after awhile.
I managed a workaround in the meantime, but it’d be nice to have it supported in-game!
Not a single TC guild has contacted me in forums or in game. So I’m now willing to entertain a server transfer for the right guild. My playtimes vary, but I’m not able to attend guild events after 6pm EDT 3-4 times a week due to my schedule.
Really looking for a social guild, guys. Some place I can make friends and run through content with. Map clearing/personal story is pretty boring when you’re doing it alone!
I’m a 40 year old gamer returning to GW2 after being gone for over a year.
I’m looking for a casual, friendly PvX guild to do things with. The guild needs to be large enough to do weekly guild missions. A guild with events held in the late afternoon EDT would be ideal for me, though I’ll sometimes be able to attend evening events depending on my schedule.
At the moment I mainly WvW, map completion, dailys/months and do my personal storylines. I was never into dungeons/fractals much before I left, but I’m willing to learn them if you’re willing to bring along a noob!
I’ve been gone over a year, and I’m considering returning for WvW gameplay.
Has WvW changed much in the past year? Has it gotten better or worse?
Which classes are the most needed in WvW right now? Which classes are the most nerfed and to be avoided?
How bad are queues? I see the server I’m on (Tarnished Coast) is T1, am I always going to be waiting in queues? I’ll only have a couple hours of playtime a day, I don’t want to spend most of it waiting in a queue.
Thanks in advance!
This thread is more positive than I thought. Yay!
I certainly hope so! I wasn’t looking to start a flame war. I just wanted straight answers to a simple question.
Thanks for all the input, folks! The primary piece of advice I’m seeing here is: Log in and check it out, then decide for yourself. So I think I’ll take a little time on Sunday to do just that!

Hey guys. I took Guild Wars 2 off for the Summer. Now that Fall is arriving (and I’m getting bored of Skyrim again) is GW2 worth returning too?
Before taking a break, I ended up leveling 8 characters to level 80, and getting them all decked out in exotic gear. I heard they added a new tier of gear now, does that new tier mean my old exotic gear is now worthless in WvW, and I’ll have to regrind all new gear?

I think Devon’s speaking about guild siege weapons. I am glad to hear that the code issue is being worked on, though!
We are looking into what it will take to split the times out on a per region basis and we’ll do everything we can to make that the case as soon as possible. In the meantime, this change will make things better for European players, who have been dealing with a very inconvenient time since launch.
For the record, I don’t have a stake in this. I don’t WvW on reset nights, but with all due respect Devon I have to say this.
Sounds to me like it’s just a matter of time before you’re able to separate US/EU WvW server reset times. In that case why change the reset times at all?
In my opinion you would have been better served saying “We are looking into what it will take to split the times out on a per region basis and we’ll do everything we can to make that the case as soon as possible.” and not changing the reset time at all. This is only going to stir up hard feelings on the part of some WvW players. Especially since now if you back down, you anger some of your EU costumers and if you don’t you anger some of your NA customers.
This could have been handled so much better PR-wise, in my opinion.
I’ve leveled all classes to 80, and they all have exotics (yes I know, I have no life).
My favorites in WvW are guardian, ele, mesmer. My least favorite is Engi.
I see two seperate issues here personally.
1) Even after playing a thief and a mesmer to 80, I still think stealth is overpowered. I personally believe the best way to fix stealth is to make it impossible to stealth while in combat, while also buffing the duration of stealth granted by the various skills. In my opinion, this would make stealth “fair”.
2) One player with a hand weapon should not be able to lockdown a waypoint. I can think of two possible fixes off the top of my head. Either, A – Siege damage to the walls/doors will contest the waypoint for the timer duration or B – Destroying a gate or wall permanently contests the waypoint until repaired enough to close them (15% I think? I forget the exact percentage).
Even if we found a fair way to measure this, I’m pretty sure this would simply lead to what we already know. Servers with better coverage tend to do better than servers lacking coverage.
This almost sounds like a solution in search of a problem.
I haven’t had that much fun in WvW in a long time! The Epic Odinzu leading everyone off a cliff to fall to their deaths made me laugh so hard I woke the neighbors at 3am!
Then there was the double take moment of, is KN actually charging us in open field with… 5 Omega Golems? I’ll say this, it was totally unexpected!
Then as has been shown in screenshots, we just decided to go nuts and use trebs in place of rams at gates. That is when we were even using siege at all!
Ah yes, the epic charge of FA’s spawn to see who could get the furtherst in. I’m not sure who was laughing harder, FA or us! I actually won that, I made it all the way to FA’s spawn gate in TCBL before dying, farthur than anyone else! Hopefully I left a good loot bag for someone!
Great fights, lots of loot bags, good times!
Any NA server with uncontested Melandru? It’s bugged on TC.
I’m looking to get the karma armor for my thief, but TC and Darkhaven don’t hold Arah, thus no karma vendor.
Does any other server hold the gates of Arah and have the karma vendor spawned?
No, I wouldn’t pay to change my character’s race. I’ve no problem with others doing so however. Name change on the other hand I might just pay for.
I use to screw with beggars, but I always ended up blocking them in the end anyway. I eventually just skipped the middleman and went straight to blocking beggars immediately.
Kittens happen. Might I recommend watching a movie during the downtime? It’s what I intend to do!
I’m getting Texture flashes in Skyrim, too. Oh well. Guess it’s time to return the card and get a 670.
Don’t feel so bad, Nvidia users have the same problem.
Seriously? So I’m screwed no matter which brand of card I go with? Wow…
So the white texture flashing/flicking came back again.
This time I found out about the 13.2 beta catalyst drivers, since it was either try a beta or return the card and get a 670, I tried the beta drivers.
So far so good. However the flashing seems to take a day or so before it’s noticeable. If it returns in the next few days I may just return my 7970 for a refund and get a 670 instead.
Uninstall again and maybe use that new (win7 only) clean uninstall utility from AMD:
http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/catalyst-uninstall-utility.aspx
Then try the 13.1 again.
Thanks! I actually used Driver Fusion to remove all AMD references from my system instead as I didn’t see your post until after I used Driver Fusion. So far uninstalling, using Driver Fusion, and then reinstalling seems to have done the trick. If the flickering returns, I’ll try your suggestion.
I built a new computer recently. i5-3570k and a Sapphire 7970.
In guild wars I get terrible flickering textures sometimes. I’ve tried the 12.10 driver, the 12.11 beta, and now the 13.1 drivers. It happens on all of them.
I’m attaching a screenshot of what it looks like. Any idea what I can do?
Check out Tarnished Coast. Lot’s of nice players there from what I’ve seen. I transfered to TC when HoD folded and became a bot haven after TA broke up, haven’t regretted it!
No they haven’t, and I hope they never do. I had my fill of people pm’ing me “Hey dood, why dont u accept duls?” (yes, typed just like that!) from other MMO’s.
I got an SSD for Christmas, and I installed and migrated my OS over to it yesterday. Ever since then I getting freezes during combat, whereas it did not do this before. In detail, what happens is all the action pauses on my screen, but I can still move around. About 1-2 seconds later all the action “catches up” very quickly. The more action, the worse it gets.
Obviously it’s an issue with my SSD/OS setup. So I’m hoping I’m missing something here I can easily correct. I run Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium, I have 8GB of RAM, and I installed a Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD and used Samsung’s Data Migration Tool to move the OS over from my old HDD. Anyone have any ideas?
Before anyone asks. Reinstalling the OS is going to be difficult, I upgraded from Vista to Win7 years ago and lost both disks during a move 2 years ago (I still have the valid codes, though). So I don’t know, maybe I’d have to call Microsoft to get a new Win7 disk?
Fun fights in TCBL today. CD’s KH guild surprised us in TC by hitting TCBL’s Garrison’s Watergate with a massive zerg and several Omega golems. Garrison fell before reinforcements could arrive. You guys almost took Hills too!
Was alot of fun fighting you guys off at Hills and retaking Garrison with our own Golem rush. You guys made us fight hard to retake TCBL’s Garrison. Biggest rush I’ve had in WvW since the weekend!
Hey guys. I was in WvW EB today on my low level (35) mesmer, and I saw another mesmer in stealth. When I checked their buff, it showed 2 minutes! When I asked them how they were doing it, they immediately unstealthed and ran off.
How the heck did they accomplish that? I’d like to be able to stealth for over 2 mins!
I disagree. Fix the exploits and ban the hackers.
In my opinion, nothing makes legit players quit faster than cheaters.
I gotta agree with this. Players buffing/healing other players should get the same rewards the players doing damage are getting. I realize balancing that will be an issue (give the supporters too many rewards and everyone will switch to support, talking about boring WvW) but there has to be some middle ground where supporters get drops like the DPS’rs do.
You know, Anet mixed PvP and PvE in Guild Wars 1 as well. This isn’t something new for them. They’ve been doing it for years. Personally, I enjoy it and hope they keep it up.
As for the OP’s question… the answer is no. What you’re going through is exactly what Anet designed. I’m sorry if you don’t like it, but this is the way Anet wants it to be. If you want to get your legendary, you have to do WvW. If you have to do WvW, then you’re going to run into players who will want to kill you.
The real question is: Do you want your legendary badly enough that you are willing to put up with it?
I enjoyed Snowball Mayhem overall. The game itself is fun team based PvP which I enjoy.
I’m torn on the achievements, however. Gift Stopper is naturally co-operative (help your team bring down the enemy player carrying the gifts). Gift Bringer is naturally selfish (why cover your ally when it’s in your best interest to let them die so you can pick up the gift).
A quick solution would be to increase Gift Bringer and Gift Stopper max achievement level to 50. Then make any any enemy gift carrier kills by your team count towards the Gift Stopper Achievement. Finally change it so any gifts anyone on your team returns to your spawn counts towards the Gift Bringer Achievement.
This would make the achievements more team oriented, and I think improve the experience for everyone (both the Achievement hunter, and those playing Snowball Mayhem just for fun).

[GODS] decided to go to town in EB around 1:00PM EST.
Set up trebs and took down inner and outer SMC and then . . .
We took ALL the towers!
Oh hey, we forgot to thank you for helping us take Stonemist by distracting CD so well to the north side of SM we were able to sneak in the south gate and surprise them in the Lord’s Room. We also really appreciate you pulling out of SM so we could secure it easily.
Say, do us a favor the next time you help us take stuff from CD? Take your dead with you. We found one of your mesmer’s dead in the upper levels of SM. Had to bury him right there with a flame ram on top of him as a memorial. You also left a lost lonely thief behind. We could hear him, but never could find him. If you find the thief’s parents, could you let them know we left food out for him in SM? We’re all hoping he found his way home!
Can I take this moment to thank CD and subsequently, TA, for the fight for Stonemist? Great fun guys!
Agreed, it was fun.
I’d also like to add a shoutout to the FA thief that would wave at us inside the SM upper keep while perma stealthed having 20 TC members looking for him. You gave us all some good fun running around looking for you!
I casually Hate ‘conspiracy theroists’ of every ilk, but at some point if it waddles like a duck, quacks like a duck, and most particularly Smells like a duck, it may in fact be a duck.
I’m not one to defend Anet when it’s obvious the botting problem is getting worse not better… but I gotta respond to this.
You’re assuming botters are paying for GW2 at all. Hacker steals credit card info, uses credit card info to buy a copy of GW2. Hackers runs a bot to get gold, hackers sells gold to players and makes real $$. Eventually the credit card company/card card holder sees the credit card theft, cancels the card and reverses the charge on Anet. Anet is now out $60 plus manpower costs to handle bots/chargebacks.
And that’s only 1 possible scenario. While I agree Anet needs to do more about bots quick, soon, fast and in a hurry… I disagree that Anet has any conspiracy going on with the hackers.
I’ve noticed in the past few days the botters are changing tactics. They aren’t just using rangers with brown bears anymore. Now I’m seeing warriors, guardians, and rangers 2-5 at a time running in lines around an area to farm events. It makes it more difficult to tell who is a bot and who is just trying to finish a heart or do an event. Worse, it makes it harder for legit players to do events and/or get map completion when bots are sweeping away mobs 1-2 seconds after they spawn.
Anet, please do something about this soon. Not only shouldn’t I have to compete with bots to do hearts and events, I don’t even WANT to do them with bots around out of fear I’ll get mistakenly banned!
I just turned on the game for the first time tonight, got patched and now I can’t log in either. Saying unable to access the log-in server.
Edit: Yep same here, as soon as I posted here it let me in.
(edited by Merkator.6351)
Though I don’t have a suggestion for a server, I do recommend you consider the benefits of guesting, which will hopefully be implemented soon. By guesting you can temporarily choose to use a server with players in the zone you’re in. At that point it won’t matter what server you are on.
Unfortunately since Anet won’t give us a firm date for guesting, I can’t take that into consideration. If Anet gave a firm date for enabling guesting (and it was soon enough), then I never would have posted to begin with.
The server my guild is on right now is pretty quiet during off-peak hours. This makes it tough for certain members to find groups during off-peak hours.
We’re mostly a PvE guild, so finding a server that has some activity in PvE around the clock is important. We do a little WvW, but 90% of the time we are running PvE content. I’m assuming this means finding a server with US, European, and Oceanic players on it.
Our guild is not large, less than 20 on vent during peak, and less than 5 during off peak. Anyone have any suggestions?
I have lived by the rule “If the game you are playing isn’t fun, you’re doing something wrong.” So if you aren’t enjoying GW2, then you’re doing something wrong.
It’s been my experience, that when I stop having fun in a game my something wrong was I had been playing too much, too long. The solution for that case is to put the game down and take a break. Simple as that, take a break. How long that break is… well that’s entirely up to you. Honestly, both Guild Wars 1 & 2 were both designed with this in mind. Guild Wars 1 even tells you to take a break if you’ve been playing too long, something I kind of miss in Guild Wars 2.
So go ahead, take a break. Don’t feel bad about or pressured to keep playing. If/when you decide to come back, I can assure you that you will have at least a little fun.
We can’t even seem to capture Arah much less hold it on HoD anymore.
Can anyone recommend a server that gets Arah consistently so I can finish my personal story?
As I type this the area just south of [Lapatl Grounds] POI in Bloodtide Coast on Henge of Denravi Server is swarming with bots. Many of them have guild tags even. They’re farming the events that spawn right there. All an Anet GM has to do is just come look and they’d be able to ban 25 bots in 5 minutes. There’s no way I can report them all.
Sights like these make me start to reconsider my commitment to play GW2 and buy gems. I’m aware you’re trying Anet, but you really need to try harder.
I for hope they keep the max zoom at this distance. I like being able to see what’s around me sometime. The only thing that would make this better would being able to zoom all the way into 1st person mode from waaaay out. It was very convenient in GW1 to have that ability.
