New rig mod price for performance

Opopanax.1803

Hey all

Just about time for a new computer. I don’t have a ton of money, but do want someting that plays gw2 well.

I have gathered that kitten drive is the way to go on the drive side, and I currently run a AMD processor and even though it is a good one, my performance isn’t great.

So, if you were to make/buy a moderately priced computer, what would you get?

Intel processor X?
Ssd drive brand?
Graphics card?

Would love some help.

I wish they would introduce a new race or two, but not traditional. Maybe add alevel 80 zone like in LS3 and let people start a boosted character there with no Personal Story.

I know they worry about animations, but I’m one of those people that would rather have a Koda, for example , with a basic fur look than not have a new race.

Just my thoughts.

Has Anet Remembered the Casuals?

Opopanax.1803

Well, it’s been a while since I posted, or played for that matter, I hope things have been going well for all of you , that populations are tip top, pugs for dungeons and meta events are plentiful, and that WvW and sPvP are brimming with players. I know most people would dream that a game would collapse behind them when they left, but, I had no such dream, in fact, I hoped things would go well enough to justify a whole new expansion, and it seems it has. So. ta da.. I’m back to check it out .

Now, I left because I was unhappy with the HoT expansion and as opposed to playing a game past its’ point of fun, I simply took my own advice and moved on to other games.

HoT made it clear that Anet was moving away from it’s casual base to cater to other gamer demographics, which is fine, it’s their game, and they have every right to do whatever they want with it, my only option is play or not play , so I opted out, but, I am piqued about PoF, however before I download the game, I am wondering if PoF is more like the Core game, or is it more like HoT.

Having started in the first beta weekend, I agree at HoT was far more amped up than Siverwastes. You got hit with raw difficulty coming into Verdant brink. I had to change gear for more survival and more cleaving/aoe DMG to solo things. While VB was super cool and artistic in the sense that all of these vines were launching up from the base of the jungle to impale airships, figuring out how to get to HP or Mastery Points was not easy. Some times airships were up to get to the canopy, sometimes not. When you are first working on gliding, you die from dropping because you can’t go unlimited distances.

All that said, I do enjoy HoT. It is doable after it was merged so if you stopped the first three months of release, it has gotten easier.

Comparing what I just played, PoF feels like a really nice balance of the two.

I will be supporting anet and buying the xpac because I think LS3 showed me that they have found a balance that I like for casual with some challenge and exploration, and story telling that makes me want to hear the next part and see where it goes. I like there business model, I like the cap at 80 and gearing tears not changing.

Overall, lookin forward to it. And succinctly, no, the part that we saw of PoF was really horizontal, much more akin to classic zones.

Please add Tengu, and here is why

Yeah completely gutting Berserker was such a smart move on their part and don’t let me forget giving us an expansion preview by pretty much removing Shroud from any serious gameplay.

PS: Lately had this fascination with actually using torches as light sources, and looking out dungeons and dark caves, and swapping to torches for the fun of it. But you can also get around this with specific skins. I’d recommend looking at the Cobalt GS skin, my favorite of the lot, and usually not too expensive. It’s absolutely fantastic to use in Obsidian Sanctum JP in the blackout zone

Aside from torches or consumable trinkets, are there any other weapons or good light source items or equipment out there? I was looking for a staff that glowed, but only saw the “crossing” one on the wiki.. Or any back or helm or shoulder/armor options that light up caves?

Talking about the wiki, it looks like it is outdated… unless there really are that few options for light sources.

What about “no food” and “no elite skills”?

I felt that not allowing traits was already a huge handicap. You’d need any boost you could get.

I’ve been playing Engineer for too long. I don’t need traits to run a flamethrower and win.

I’ve thought of trying to do a white or blue dungeon run before. Only use white or blue gear with runes and sigils. Get a whole group that is willing to do it and see how far you can get in dungeons, fractals, etc.

I would have only said white gear, but white gear only has berserker stats, so you cant meaningfully make a build with different stats, and there are no white trinkets.

If you want a challenge along these lines force yourself to use gear that only has one offensive stat (power, precision, condition damage) with the other two or three being defensive or utility (healing power, toughness, vitality, concentration, expertise). Battles in this game increase exponentially in difficulty and risk based on time to kill so by reducing your offensive capabilities you’re greatly increasing the odds of being killed by accidental slip-ups and human error.

True. Additionally, you could just run with broken gear for no stats, but run with runes and sigils. Runes still work through armor being broken. That would make it pretty darn tough.

Thanks for all the input! Lots of things about some classes that I didnt know before.

One additional question… how useful do you think stealth is for bypassing mobs in certain areas? I havent played stealth classes before past about level 20 so I dont really know how useful it can be as a tool for getting around mobs.

Stealth is situational since it’s generally a short duration effect. I don’t think it’s possible to permastealth anymore. Or else I’m doing it wrong.

I have a daredevil with stealth and I found it very useful while harvesting winter berries to just stealth before harvesting and ignore everyone.

In general you don’t need to worry about avoiding mobs, though. You might occasionally get slowed down for a bit, but mobs give up pretty quick if you just run past them. There are only a handful of mobs that when concentrated enough can trash you if you don’t try to deal with them.

The only thing I had heard of is a Trapper Thief with runes that give stealth on trapping, and apparently you can somehow achieve permastealth with it. I have not heard that with mesmer, but mesmers do have portal which could be quite handy. Great info on daredevil and not really needing stealth to get around mobs; much appreciated.

It sort of seems like every class has something that helps make it handy for open world exploration: high runspeed, brute force, survivability, etc that could all be employed to my ends.

Thanks so much for all of the feedback, this is really good stuff.

Hey all,

I am wanting to roll a character for the purpose of exploring the nooks and crannies of Tyria. I am trying to settle on profession (and to a much lesser extent, race).

What profession would you pick for jumping puzzles, soloing mobs, soloing elites/champions, exploring caves, etc?

Right now I’m leaning towards mesmer because they have stealth, access to torch for a light source in tunnels caves, and illusions to misdirect mobs to.

Are there any racials that you think would help with this?

Condition & Boon Condensing Recommendation

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Opopanax.1803

Opopanax.1803

I don’t get the Bleed hate. It is a pure DoT effect that males sense with cutting/stabbing. Burning and poison don’t cover this type of theme.

Beyond that, I think by doing this reduction, you make the remaining condos and boons even that much more critical, and stripping them even more important. The goal should be different than that.

Ps- if I would remove anything, I think torment should be covers by chill and/or slow. It doesn’t make sense to add a dot effect based on movement when you already have slow, cripple, and chill.

Any way to make sword AA good?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Opopanax.1803

Opopanax.1803

I think maybe my issue with mesmer sword is the playstyle. The idea of a melee weapon that yo yos you in and out of melee combat range is just horrible for time on target. Maybe this is coming from playing other classes where sword actually works well, and they have the sustain that supports time on target, but mesmer MH sword is the worst of all of the sword classes, imo.

No, I dont think 2 or 3 do a good job at all compared to other sword classes skills. You have a self root that is melee ranged (guardians also roots, but at least it is 600 range!), and you have a unreliable cripple/immobilize that that has a tendency to put you away from your target not on it.

If you’re trying to just stick to a target in melee range and dps them down, you’re going to have a bad time. Mesmer simply does not work that way. The class is designed for burst damage, not sustained. I can certainly understand frustration if you’re attempting to play mesmer in that way, but there will never be a solution for you other than playing a different class. You’re trying to hammer nails with a pair of scissors, its not going to work.

Oh, I realize that they designed sword this way on mesmer, but this is why it works against its own gameplay design. It is a melee weapon, yet with this type of gameplay you can’t get auto attack to pull of much damage because you are expected to yo-yo. It’s why mesmer sword only works well against given classes and situations.

@Opopanax – I brought up MH sword because outside of the first 3 or so levels in the game you wouldn’t run around with just MH sword and no OH weapon equipped.

But even just looking at MH sword, it still has high defensive capabilities. 2.5 sec Blur on a 12 sec CD untraited, that is 21% uptime on the blur effect. Pair that with Ineptitude and you also blind people if they attack while you are using BF, forcing a miss on their next attack. Or take Mental Defense and then suddenly you are taking 33% less damage after using BF.

It already has a ton of defensive utility built in, and when paired with some of our OH weapons it really shine. OH sword gives us a block to use as well. Shield gives us incredible defensive abilities, Torch gives us stealth.

It really doesn’t need any defensive buffs imo

I dont consider a stationary distortion that defensive in and of itself, especially for a weapon that is melee when you need time on target. You give away a lot to use it.

And you can go on about traits that support it being more defensive, but none of those are specific to sword, so pretty much a moot point on all of the rest of your argument.

All in all I hear what you are saying: yes it has one defensive skill. But I think the whole problem is that in general, they dont make it a great melee weapon for staying on your target, and that works against it being melee at all.
ie, warrior sword has a cripple on auto chain, leap to cripple. Guard sword has a teleport to target+ blind and a block ranged skill. Ranger sword has an cripple on auto and leap out and back in, and evade around target. Thief has cripple, immobilize, and depends for 3. Revenant has chill on 2 and evade on 3. Are you seeing a theme with staying on the target?

I’m not trying to say mesmer sword is bad for power and that 3 isnt defensive, but the skills dont lend to staying on your target and actually work against staying in melee combat compared to any other sword classes. These are just my observations; obviously you are fine with it, but this is why I think it is underutilized and doesnt hold weight against are other weapons.

Interesting that you think that the defensive capabilities of Sword need to be increased considering its already one of our most defensive weapons. We get Blur on SW2, a block on SW4 (not MH sword, but its still the same weapon), along with traits that synergize extremely well with Sword (Ineptitude, Mental Defense, and Evasive Mirror are all defensive traits that SW2 will activate).

I am talking MH sword. The only defensive skill is the distortion, and that is relatively high CD. Scepter has better defense than sword MH.

My point is that for a melee weapon that is encouraging close play for a light armor class with moderate base health and little sustain, something little like some toughness on proc; endurance recovery, or something like that would be helpful to a melee playstyle. I dont think zipping in then ducking back out is a good playstyle for the melee weapon… which is probably one of the reasons that it doesnt get a ton of use : the playstyle is not great for mesmer with all of the other things that mesmer has going for it. Melee is not well supported in mesmer traits or skills.

The offense is fine, I think it could use something to help us be a bit more defensive in melee. Light armor and non-high HP and not as much sustain make it harder to be melee… something on the autoattack that would help that would be nice.

i think the real question should be: Should i use defence trait line in pve? answer is no, it makes no sense, just pick strength, arms and discipline, this way u will do more arcing slices with more damage and at the same time keeping up the bonus dmg from strength more consistently due to higher adrenaline regen, not to mention signet mastery wich also boosts ur dps significantly.
if u kill faster theres no need for defence trait line cuz dead mobs= no damage on u

I am playing a condi power hybrid build and loving it, so I go Arms, Tactics, Berserker. But agreed, Defense has no real place for general word pve.

I was thinking of a sword shield condi tank the other day non-zerker- arms, defense, discipline. I think it could be strong for loads of sustain and soloing or even wvw.

I know that wasnt what the OP asked about, but I like the options for condi warrior so wanted to add them in
