Realize most of your condis is Torment. Do you really feel like kiting around so the Torment procs properly?
Go power

Its not just torment.

If you spec for it you can have poison stack everytime you stack torment and on top of that they have an aoe burning thats highly spammable not too mention they can also have chill on every single crit and in the condition tree you get a ton of free crit chance for doing nothing but attacking.

I think sword/axe is has the most dps of any weapon set up

During the test weekends i was actually really enjoying sword/axe. I really loved the mace however and mace/axe has so much synergy its incredibly. Dual sword was alright but offhand sword to me felt weak.

Staff i didn’t get to use too much as i don’t like the animations considering its held like a hammer but twirled like a stick and has some blah animations. I am interested on the hammer feedback though. Is it going to be a good secondary or even a primary? How does it fare with each legend and such?

Mesmer here.

Guardians were taken for reflect and because they out dps mesmers. However with alacrity our community hypothesized the new meta would be 2 ele, 1 chronomancer, 1 warrior, 1 revenant.

The uptime on quickness and alacrity makes for a group that out dps the current meta.

Revenant becomes a half warrior, half guard. Taken for niche stat increases.

The mesmer would be half guard, half thief.

theres no reason to take Rev over Guard for fractals/dungeons. Raids, maybe because its unknown territory, but as if now, Guardian is still a boss hog due to reflects

I am not the most knowledgeable in this game but i have to ask why you wouldn’t take a rev into a fractal over a guardian. I know guardians are good but with the way revs bring weakness and conditions and projectile blocks i dont see how you couldnt bring one.

Revs right now are one of the top dps/support/tanky class in the entire game mainly because their dps rotation can largely nail down to auto attack which means Heralds can generate support boons without any hinderance. Infuse light is pretty much an invul, shield 5 is a block and sword 3 as full frame evade means they are incredibly hard to kill as well.

Honestly at this point I kind of wish they would nerf AA and move the damage to other skills like off hand sword a bit so the dps rotation is not just AA AA AA.

How about the weapons then how do they fare?

/sigh
It’s time you realise that pumping out volatile and unpractical 800-1k heals every once in a while isn’t in any way useful while dungeoning and does NOT compensate for awful personal dps, limited access to ccs (in particular soft), clunky blasts, little offensive utility and absolutely no group buffs.

Y’know, tanks and healers aren’t really all the rage anymore.

I was able to pump out almost 2k heals every 3-4 seconds as long as i was managing my energy properly.

Revenant Lacking in Damage Department

Oshelotae.4176

I think its a bit early to judge the revenant on ‘lacking damage’. They’re basically missing the (what’s speculated to be), raw damage weapons and specializations.
Its like playing an Ele that has no fire attunement.

That being said, I do feel like it is lacking a bit in other parts. Personally I feel like Staff skill 2 is useless.
Long cast time, and have to hit an opponent that is currently attacking. All that just for a bit of weakness?
I know it hits multiple targets, but honestly Hammer 2 on warrior is basically the same thing, but faster, stronger, and more weakness, even uses the same animation, just single target. I honestly feel like I put myself in more harm when using that skill, as opposed to simply auto attacking.

TBH i cant see a real actual scenario use for a staff.

Even with Ventari Legend having hammer for the ranged option and being able to micromanage tablet at ranged is infinitely better than trying to micro manage it while in melee.

Disclaimer: This post assumes all traits working as intended rather than some of their current bugged/disabled state.

In PvE, weapons with symbols are getting more attention due to the re-work of the traits, Zeal specifically.

Greatsword and Mace offer the highest DPS if you can keep up momentum on your rotations. Focus is used for its burst and blocks while Torch is kept on hand (on off-hand?) for sustained DPS. Otherwise Hammer and Mace offer a more relaxed playstyle while still providing competitive DPS.

Greatsword also gets access to CD reduction for more DPS orientated builds that never got to select Two-Handed Mastery.

Bulwark Trait for Mace gives you free heal stacks for block with a Mace…which it already does a good job at; the same trait also reduces cd on Mace skills which makes the symbol on it nearly permanent when combined with Writ.

Writ of Persistence is another highly favored trait if you’re playing with Symbols and are going with Honor. Honor is practically required if you’re going with Hammer though.

Scepter is still our best ranged weapon or to be used against big-boxed-bossed. They took away its flat damage modifier trait for a might stacking trait, but it competes with fiery wrath.

Sword has been shelved due to losing its Powerful Blades trait. Utility of this weapon is limited to minor “blinking” shenanigans and when extra blinds are needed. If going the Blind route Radiance is encouraged for VoJ blind synergy as well.

Staff is still considered the ‘Loot Stick’. They have a trait giving the weapon a +20% Boon duration, but we break about even now that Virtues doesn’t have extended Boon duration.

Torch got quite a damage increase due to Radiance giving you a free 4 burst on crit every 10 seconds.

Focus is more defensive than ever by being able to trait for Protection on Focus skill use.

Shield got its cd’s cut by quite a bit, and its respective trait cuts it down even more while offering toughness. Overall, still on the ‘meh’ side of the weapons selection.

This is exactly the kind of post i was looking for.

So with hammer and mace doing so well does that mean that an Altruistic healing build is now favored with tanky healer gear over zerker? Or is Zerker still the go to for all gear for a guardian?

Can anyone tell me whats different on guards?

Everything shot shuffled up. Traits combined, trait lines spread out, and the 3 trait limitation makes the old scattered builds hard to recreate. If you depended on mixing multiple trait lines, its harder now to make those work. But if you focused into a few GM traits, the consolations make things easier.

The only majorly glaring issue is that weapon cool down traits are pretty much a mess. Just hope the ones you want aren’t competing with the utility traits you need.

As for the meta…. still being figured out. Medi guards are current favorite until the symbols trait gets fixed, which could go either way depending on what the DPS of hammers can pull off when working as intended.

Shields still suck outside of specific world boss fights, and Consecrations have Ground targeting standard (which is messing up their ease of use in major way). GS is still viable for now… but again… Symbols.

But I wouldn’t bother gearing up until the meta settles. The missing stats we used to get from traits messes with the cadence of a quite a few builds. If you have full zerks, I’d recommend a Medi build in the interim, as it doesn’t require rune synergy and plays like a glass cannon any way.

What about the different weapons?

Mace/greatsword/hammer/focus etc

Where do all of the guardian weapons currently stand?

For example is mace a good choice now or are condition guards actually viable?

What about shield is it actually decent now or still the same old rubbish?

Have the trait lines been made been better?

Is greatsword still the number 1 option for guards over every other weapon?

Advice for Hammer Guardian for PVE/dungeons

So i have an in your face playstyle and am reckless.

I like the hammer and the symbol it produces but with the new changes i have no idea what a good idea for a hammer build would be. I have always just went with what i thought was cool but i want to start being a bit more effective as the expansion comes closer.

So generally i use zerk gear (am willing to switch if need be) and prefer hammer and mace/focus but am willing to use another swap if need be (i tbh i don’t really like greatsword one bit).

So please any advice would be great.

Oshelotae.4176

Yes Carlin, that’s exactly whit I’m saying. In the context of the function of how GW2s weapons work, a 2h Axe would bring absolutely nothing to the table that Hammer or Greatsword don’t already provide. Except maybe “hey that looks cool” which is why I propose a skin but flagged as a GS or hammer, similar to the slingshot/short bow deal. This is no different that requests for crossbows, or the please for ranger to get pistols or rifles. Use you very matter and plz explain, in the context of GW2’s skills, kitten would these additions actually ADD to the existing skill set. And Noe contrived skills a cool animations won’t cut it.

Thats not entirely true.

Greatswords are used as slashing and stabbing weapons and hammers are used as crushing and smashing weapons.

mechanicaly Greatswords and hammers are about either their AOE damage or their AOE CC. An Axe could be about single target high damage or AOE bleeds for a warrior for example.

Great axes are more about chopping and possibly about ripping away defenses. It could literally go any way because Great Axes have alot of opportunities plus you cant have a great sword and great hammer and not have a great axe.

A lot faster than simply auto attacking. If you enjoy the style, go full Berzerker gear and don’t let anyone tell you you’re “Doing it wrong”. Have fun.

I was planning on doing that but i wanted to make the axe/axe as effective as possible while im using it. Im not very good at understanding the trait trees yet but im learning so i wanted to ask more experienced opinions on what would be best for an Axe/Axe user trait wise.

The axe offhand is terrible in pve since it deals not enough damage. It’s only good for tagging mobs at orr train, but that’s it already. They have to buff 5# damage by almost 100% to become viable again. Right now it deals less damage against 5 targets than the axe aa deals damage against 3 targets.

I’m not here to crush your none meta playstyle, I’m a axe lover myself, but you shouldn’t really touch the axe offhand in pve if you want to go to dungeons or fractales with it.

If you want a pure axe build, here is the best one that exist right now:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fJAQNAn5cjMd09ZlH2eQHagggyYBEAnPhPY6TGEHBA-ThBBABYt/o8DgTCQe6FC4BAUp6PnpEEA-e

You can change tactics V for tactics VI, it really depends on the dungeon / fotm -> if you have long skips, go for VI, if you are constantly fighting, go for V so you got a 100% banner uptime.

Sword offhand is only for single target dps increase. You can use shield for some bosses (mai thrin for example) or rifle, or simply use sword + warhorn for skips.

Make sure you won’t interrupt your aa’s last hit, wich is the strongest one. You can interrupt your 2nd chain to get quick to the 3rd wich makes it the strongest AA ingame.

greez!

I already said before that I understand that axe offhand isn’t very good but i do like the style of it and i do like the skills of it despite it being not as effective.

I just wan’t an axe/axe build for personal playstyle and advice from people who understand it better than me because i don’t care if its the end all be all of damage i just want to have fun with something i like.

Yeah, it’s a new CC. The thing to remember is not that GW2 ignores the trinity, or that we’re all DPS, it’s that the trinity is an artificial enforcement of something that is much more fluid realistically, and GW2’s goal is to play it that way.

And it’s not just real life. Before MMOs, did you read any fiction where a warrior could literally force a target to attack him over his party with just a nonmagical word? And he had to because he could take a dragon stepping on him, but the rest of his party would go down if the monsters so much as looked at them funny?

Yes, there are people who can take more hits than other people, and there are people who focus on keeping their allies healthy, but those aren’t hard and fast roles within a system that pretty much has to be run that way or fail. In a real war, there are armored units and medics, but nothing magically forces people to attack the armored units exclusively, and if they managed to ignore them they wouldn’t instantly win.

GW2 isn’t saying that you can’t take more hits or assist your allies. GW2 is about a situation where you’re all in the fight together, and you have to approach each enemy tactically, not with some etiquette that the dragon will only attack the only guy who can take it.

Actually taunting an enemy was a tactic used in real life skirmishes. It was called a distraction. Give the enemy something valuable to attack while you take something even more valuable of theirs. Also in alot of fantasy stuff as well Warriors would not just use magic but also noise to attract the attention of monsters such as banging on shields or pelting the monsters with projectiles.

Im not calling for it to be nerfed but I feel the other weapons are slow and slugish and are ment for PVP such as the hammer. And are ranged weapons are not all that great The staff has it’s uses but it has no distance but it’s supposed to be more shotgun like.

I would love to use sword and shield if shield wasn’t awful feeling.

Greatswords tend to be burst weapons – you bring it out, pop 2-3 of its skills, then switch it back for a weapon with a better autoattack.

Warrior: Purely a burst weapon, and rather famous for its effectiveness. Most DPS builds will run one.
Guard: Burst weapon with some utility. Definitely strong on a DPS build, but faces competition from other high damage, more supportive weapons like the hammer.
Ranger: Decent burst, but a poor overall DPS weapon compared to the sword. Definitely a defensive melee option due to spammable evades and a block.
Mesmer: Pretty much functions like the Ranger’s longbow – good ranged damage, but ineffective in dungeons due to the emphasis on melee and stacking. The 3rd skill is decent burst, but you can’t really camp it.

I currently run a hammer guardian with a greatsword secondary. If i could i would prefer to run Sword/Shield or Sword/Focus or Mace/Shield /Mace/focus Problem is if i do that i sacrifice way too much as a guardian by not having GS and shield just seems to be completely useless no matter how hard i want to like it. I could run Sword/Focus but then i feel like im sacrificing huge AOE dps for some slightly better single target DPS.

I’ve used perma wrath with mace/focus build and burn on block trait, keeps targets burning for a long time. Sword is faster but Mace has a aoe symbol that keeps procing wrath. Honestly perma wrath and the traits that increase burning damage are way to far into lame trees. Guardian traits are spread really strange.

I really liked the mace as well however the only problem i have with it is that it is so slow. The reason i liked using sword/GS is because sword 3 counts as 3 hits which allows me to keep up the burning proc almost indefinitely and GS because GS 2 is fantastic for burn procs and can be AOE .

Highlights include 100% world completion, level 400+ Jewelcrafing, level 400+ Weaponsmithing, 120+ gold, WvW rank 14+, tons of rare mats, lots of various tokens, and a very rare precursor weapon named The Colossus.

The OP never explained WHAT he is struggling with the Hammer. I use it with GS and get the best of both. Most hammer guardians I see don’t know how to use the 3 hit auto-attack in conjunction with proper dodging to avoid getting hit a lot due to the slow swing speed. You can time a dodge and NOT interrupt the AA chain. Being able to do that properly is key.

I struggle with most content. I dont usually just use the hammer i also use the greatsword but im also really tired of it being the only option i dont struggle with. Mobs seem to blow through the protection as if it were nothing and i feel like im being hit way too hard even with the permanent protection on.

Because Permeating Wrath isn’t just aoe burns. It’s aoe perma burns, even at low burn durations.

The way I see it, if you go 6xxx6 for permeating wrath and lose 8k-10k worth of medi heals. You should trade that by doing 8-10k worth of aoe burns. But it doesn’t exactly mount up to that because
1) Permeating Wrath has limited range
2) You’ll most likely hit only 2-3 people on average regardless, being there’s hardly ever 5 on a point at a time.
3) You have to be in melee range at all times. That means you’re even more susceptible to all kinds of damage… making the 8k-10k medi heals ever more wanting to have.

If Permeating Wrath was target based, that alone would help the trait tremendously. I wouldn’t mind the trade off knowing I’ll be doing 800+ aoe burns from a distance with staff.

Hi unfortunately im still pretty new to this game but from what i gather you are saying that if permeating wrath was centered around the target instead of the player themselves it would be alot better?

Is that because you would be able to have a ranged option to proc the burns or just because trying to stay on top of a target is difficult?

I run a 6/0/0/2/6 build with Permeathing Wrath and Supreme Justice for open world PvE and WvW since Amplified Wrath was introduced. I went for celestial armor with Fire Legion Runes. Accessories are either rampager (PvE) or celestial (WvW).

My main goal is to complement my direct damage (either GS for PvE or Staff for WvW, secondary set with x/Focus) with a permanent burning while in close combat. When running celestial you most certainly need Amplified Wrath so your burns won’t be overwritten. With this set up and some +condi duration food one AA hit can apply 2s pbae burning (~ 600 damage per second unbuffed depending on accessories). As a result, your direct damage will receive a bonus of 17% (Fiery Wrath and Flame Legion Runes) most of the time.

Overall, it works quite well and I feel that I deal more damage in large scale fights than I would have done in a pure direct damage build. It’s pretty awesome for Tequatl, Silverwastes and Dry Top. It also is a lot of fun in WvW although it can be very dangerous to be in close combat all the time. As CMF mentioned, you lack trait points for defense and survivability.

As others pointed out, there might be more efficient ways to gain permanent burning (e.g. 3 in Radiance or Meditations etc.). The thing I like about 6/x/x/x/6 is that I neither rely on utility skills nor on people to die (e.g. Renewed Justice). The combination of Permeating Wrath and Supreme Justice shines with the probably highest and most reliable burning application you can get. You foes can cleanse conditions as often as they like because you’ll reapply your burning with the next hit anyway.

I’m not a fan of 6/x/x/x/6 condi, though.

I think i may try this.

I was just worried with going for Amplified wrath because my weapon wouldn’t be hitting as hard. But you say this isn’t a condition build though.

What traits do you run and what gear do you run while using this?

What they say is true, unfortunately.

I want to make something “like” this work:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fVAQJARWlsApVoNDxSI8DNR8Ql9Y0izoVdQ1BQD8oA-TBiAABJcEAAc/BofAAJqLAgLBwpq/IpSQxU+RKgFVWB-e

Idea would be lots of AOE burning, doing somewhere between 947-1280 damage a tick. Burning duration has increased 100% so you get 2 ticks of burning per proc of VoJ

Whirling wrath would proc approximately 30 seconds of burning on a group of 5 (potential 28,410-38,400 burning damage in 30 seconds)

Staff provides might stacks to increase burning damage for “burst”.

Rune of the Mad King does Hunter’s Call on 3 targets in a large range (about 1200 meter radius, with line of sight) striking 17 times each. that is potentially 51 hits, procing VoJ 17 times, providing 34 seconds of burning (32,198-43,520 burning damage).

Those two abilities sound GREAT…on paper.

Then you realize there are condition cleanses and this build is only “useful” in wvw, and even then its a gimick.

PvE conditions are normally not fast enough to matter, sPvP you can’t obtain the stat combination and 2x burning procs without sacrificing the trait points.

The biggest draw back to the condi guardian, you sacrifice so many trait points to obtain this “awesome” power, that you lose any and all survival traits. Your own condition cleansing is weak and you have no sustain via monks focus or altruistic healing. This means you rely purely on your heal skill, which won’t get you too far alone.

Even then in wvw, the mass amounts of retaliation would probably kill you if you tried to pop the elite with mad king. (51 hits * 233 retal damage = 11,883 damage back to yourself).

Until trait points are realigned and trait synergies like these become more obtainable, we won’t see a lot of build diversity beyond pure defensive cleric and pure offensive zerker.

Unless someone has a way to “break the meta”…I been trying with no success

Thanks for the post.

One of the reasons i asked is because as I am using Sword and focus i have access to 3-4 blinds and can keep retaliation up almost constantly with proper skill usage and timing. I admit im still really new but it seemed like a good idea to run sword/focus and greatsword and have a ton of mobility with a little condition mixed in while the GS does most of the big damage work.

I tried it once. The AoE radius is so small that unless your enemies are stack on top of eachother, it won’t hit them all. Not very good outside of PvE and even then it’s not the best way to deal damage.

It sounded cool but doesn’t live up to it.

Well from what i can tell it has the AOE size of Purging flames and thats actually a pretty decent size so it cant be all that bad? as a Sword/focus guardian shouldn’t be too hard to close the distance.

But still that leaves my question open if there are any builds that utilize them mainly for PVE content.

Is there any builds that utilize these 2 skills?

I really like using a sword/focus combo and i noticed these 2 traits and i was wondering if there was anything that utilizes these 2 skills. I mainly play PVE and do dungeons and occasionally do Eotm but thats not really a thing i do often mainly PVE.

Am i missing something or are they not in the game?

I just started a warrior with the intent to use one but i have never seen someone with one?

Was it removed or was it just never there?
If it was never there why does the picture have one on the website as thats very misleading.

Just hit level 30 and can now do dungeons?

What do these dungeons entail and how difficult are they. I don’t have alot of friends to play with on gw2 so I wanted to know what it would take to do these dungeons at level 30.

Or if their are guilds that would be willing to help a new player run them and be willing to teach.

Open world content is quite easy and you will have out leveled a lot of maps by the time you get to them so if you are still doing 1-15 maps then the old lvl 10 gear will work fine so buy gear based on that sort of thinking. I think there are 3 lvl 15-25 maps so lvl 25 gear will do fine even if you are lvl 40 by the time you finish those maps.

Power, precision, ferocity respectively are the stats you want. Buy gear every 10-15 levels and replace with better gear you get while exploring.

Also it’s fine of you absolutely love the idea of mace and shield but if your open to a more effective weapon set I suggest Great sword (great for leap, blind, and mob control with binding blades) and Staff (swiftness, tagging mobs during events, and giving you self a nice boost of 12 might before tough fights).

Hi im sorry but i know next to nothing about the staff. What do you mean tagging mobs?

Also i like the mace and shield because of the survivability and the look but i do like the greatsword as well but i feel like im far squishier when i use that.

Is there any kind of tips or tricks to using it ? The main reason i use the mace is because its forgiving and allows me to face tank some mobs but its very slow but seems to hit hard in the combo chain.

I have a level 26 guardian and lately i have been struggling with deciding which items to use.

I dont know whether i should get power (which is pretty much what i have been getting on all my gear) or getting other stats too. Im still pretty new to this game so im looking for some advice. I use a mace and shield primarily as i look the look and the abilities but also use a hammer and sword too and rarely a greatsword but mainly stick to mace and shield.

Any advice would be helpful i play mainly solo and level up by myself until i can start grouping so please any help.

There are a lot of things that you may confuse with other MMOs terms. Conditions in this game is a general term that every class can and usually will apply. There are usually no conditions that is unique to a class like in WoW or Final Fantasy. So, most classes can apply a condition like bleeding. But best would be to read the wiki-article about conditions:

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Condition

Also, I am not sure what you mean by ‘tank’. Do you mean your characters has to be very durable? Or do you mean your toon is the guy who holds aggro all the time? Be cause that’s not possible, since GW2 has no trinity (DPS, Tank, Heal).

Generally you can play every class as a ‘tank’ in GW2 terms: you can craft/buy armor that has only defensive stats, which makes a generally squishy character extremely durable. There are of course the classes with more durability – either with basic stats like warrior, or class mechanics like Guardian.

EDIT: I forgot something important about conditions in PvE. This mechanic is kinda broken. The problem is, that in PvE the cap for bleed stacks is 25. So in open world with bosses etc. this cap is reched within seconds, newly applied conditions by other sources (even non conditions warriors will apply with some traits bleeds) will overwrite your much stronger bleed stack with a weaker own version.

So generally conditions in PvE is NOT welcome. However, if you are in parties/groups in dungeons who doesn’t care you will be fine. But still; it is not advisable to make a conditions class – it is simply a broken mechanic in this game and well known since the betas and Anet hasn’t changed that.

I guess i mean mainly durable.

I prefer to be the guy in the front line doing subtle damage rather than being all about the burst i would rather rely on teammates to do the burst while i bolster their damage with my DOTs.

Ah i see pax thanks for posting that as i didnt know there we so many. Despite having this game for a long time i havent been able to play it due to worldy duties. So for my Warrior would i go a build that has condition damage?

Like i said for my guardian i was thinking of doing it more for RP reasons so i wanted to do a sword/shield type guardian like logan thackeray. Any advice on that and the above warrior question?

I guess what i mean by bleeds would be most similar to poison where the damage ticks over time and you apply stacks to get it going. That or you reapply the bleed to keep the damage going. I guess you could say something like burn damage where its a DOT. I hope that helps and maybe explains a bit more of what im looking for.

Ah i see that works i can give that a try. Thanks!

Another question if you dont mind is the warrior the only one with Conditions or does a guardian have them as well? i will be making a warrior like the one you mentioned above but i also wanted to make a character similar to Logan Thackeray just for fun and RP purposes but i like the playstyle of tanky characters who use Conditions as their primary damage source. Is there any thing similar to that?

Im sorry its been a long time since i have played and i was wondering if you could explain things to me. Such as terms etc. Is condition this games version of bleeds? and…. all those terms and such are unknown to me. Sorry in advance for my noobiness.
