Actually in his defense Scepter is awesome in trials. Immobilizing the looters is a godsend. But yeah, if you were doing fine without it don’t worry about it.

I use my hammer on the plunderers a lot, seems to work well with the immobilize and the ring that they cannot run out of( they keep falling on this kitten when they try).

Why so many guardians?

in Guardian

Posted by: Ozymandias.5704

Ozymandias.5704

My guardian was my 3rd character and second one to get to 80. Usually I am more fond of casters, but the guardian had a nice mix of nifty caster abilities, heavy armor and most importantly the hammer of win.

I use a mix of berserker and knights stats and so far I am able to deal good damage, tank fairly well, sustain decently and spread boons and heals to allies.

In a way, it is almost like my D/D elementalist, can do lots of things, but not necessarily the master of them all.

The only downside I feel is the lack of range, but that is OK, since melee is good.

GW2 is becoming more like the standard MMO with grind and RNG. The only appeal GW2 has anymore is the non subscription pay-2-play model and the somewhat monthly themed content that is riddled with RNG.

Credit where credit is due, I enjoy WvW, and I enjoy leveling new characters. The easy going casual environment is nice, and I am able to get the stat items I need. Ascended items are a bit of a grind to get, and I hope they tone that down.

That said, putting all new weapon skins behind RNG is cheesy and I dislike it. The new backpieces, and other achievement items are nice, and I appreciate begin able to get them. South sun was good fun, for example, and F&F was also nice.

It is no all bad, in fact ANet is doing a lot of good as well, but it is sad to see such great looking weapon behind gambling paywalls, and i think of that as exploiting otherwise loyal customers.

I’d be more inclined to agree with you if you “needed” the jade weapons, but you don’t. It’s just a skin, and every few months, there’s a new batch of em. I get it, you think some of the skins are pretty, and it’d just be dandy if you could get one or two for some characters, but we simply just do not need these items.

Yes, I know it’s really, really frustrating and annoying to literally flush hard earned money away. But, all I can say is just don’t do it then. If you want to support ANet, bye items which you are sure to get. And if you don’t like their practices with chance boxes, then don’t bye them.

There will be more skins. Some of them you’ll like, some of them you won’t. Some of them will be in chance boxes, some of them won’t.

And hey, of you really have had enough, stop playing. If you aren’t having fun in a game, what’s the point?

Subscription models allow you to unlock all the content, you realize how rare these skins are? You can’t even fill your PvP locker up… it’s ridiculous and weather he needs them or not, if you are a collector, you should be able to get them, especially if you are a good supporter(money invested), and you shouldn’t have to pay $500 to get enough ticket skins. This is poor practices on the games behalf and why subscription models are better than free models for dedicated gamers. Without dedicated gamers, Guild Wars 2 would keel over because it wouldn’t make any money, we should be the last people being screwed over. I’d rather pay $15 and get what I should be entitled to, rather then being expected to pay $500 a month due to all the people that don’t put any money into the game.

Sadly, bottom line, cash shops are like a pyramid scheme, certain types of players get screwed over pretty badly, just so they can label their game “free and awesome”.

Firstly, you dont know what a pyramid (multi-level marketing) scheme actually is.

Second, when you PAY $15 a month then you are entitled to things, when its free then you should never expect to get more than the $60 game you initially paid for.

Third, if subscription models actually worked anymore then you would see them still in new games, the fact that they are DEAD outside WoW says a lot about what the vast majority of players think of them.

You are wrong, subscription models work just fine. EVE Online is still kicking and growing, for example.

The real reason MMO’s are using “free to play” models is that the micro transactions actually make them more money, not that the subscription model do not work. Its not directly intuitive why, but once you read up a bit on psychology, the human behavior that enables it makes sense. Plus they can market it as “free”, and that is an easier sell then “only XX euro per month”.

Same reason they keep putting these skins behind gambling pay walls. I bet they get pretty good money from it, otherwise why do it?

But the sad part is not that they make you pay for certain items, but make you gamble for it. I would be totally fine with it if they sold the skin tickets directly in the gem store, but still kept the RNG for the boxes that drop off of mobs.

Many, many people in EVE online pay their subscription fees with in game money.

They pay with PLEX. PLEX can only ever be gotten with RL money. In essence they pay others with ingame currency to pay for their game time with RL money. Same as a subscription really, but others pay for it and you work for it by grinding isk to pay them.

frequently?
have been reading the forums. I’ve not been keeping count but I’ve opened hundreds, and no ticket.

People have opened thousands and no ticket….

Yes, they drop very frequently.
I bought 250 Dragon Coffers on the TP, after opening about 25 I got a ticket ^^

You do not understand how random numbers works. You simply got lucky, and that is no basis for how to compile information on the frequency of the drops.

Last estimate I saw from the common coffers was at .05%. That is not frequent at all.

It becomes pretty frequent when you will have easy access to thousands during the month from YOUR farming alone, let alone if you buy off the TP.

Thousands? I think your definition of frequent is far off if you call farming thousands of chests during the whole event easy.

Maybe it is worth it you to spend hours grinding and farming, or to spend most of your gold, or even lots of RL money on chests, but not to me. I like the new skins, but not that much. GW2 is a game, and while I think it is OK to spend some money for gems now and then, I don’t gamble it away.

That said I don’t mind a challenge to get the skins, doing a really hard dungeon, or a really hard boss fight, a scavenger hunt or anything of the sorts. Something more substantial. That is gaming, and it is fun.

The way it is now, its just pure gambling. And sadly we do not need to guess why that is how they implemented it.

As an example, doing the molten dungeon and getting the gloves was fun, doing scavenging and other southsun activities for the backpieces was fun. Grinding chests for a chance of getting a skin is not fun. (That goes for scelerite and fused weapons as well.)

They could just as easily have implemented something similar to get a weapon ticket, even if just one, and still kept the gambling if you wanted more weapons and skins.

Not only are the skins really nice this time around but they are pretty common to get. Without a ton of farming you can easily get 100 coffers in a single day and the event goes for a month.

Lets see if people really like having skins that everyone else has when the month is over or if people want to go back to the super rare Scelerite and Fused.

I, for one, wants a skin that looks good, regardless of what others have. I could care less about how other people look in game. I just want my own character to look cool.

I also doubt that these skins are “common”. Sure, the green boxes drop more often than the scelerite ones (I got like 2 for the whole southsun event), but the odds for each green box is like .05%. That is far from common.

Yeah, I will definitely be getting a few skins from this collection.

How can you be sure you will be getting a few when you can only gamble for them? You could open thousands of coffers and not even get one, never mind more than one.

Indeed. I really like a few of the new skins, that shield in particular. However I will not get it since I don’t have the gold to buy tons of chests with such a low drop rate being only a “casual” player. Nor do I want to put tons of RL money into gems for a chance to get one, least of all when that money can buy me food and housing.

As someone who plays a Staff Elementalist in those WvW zerg balls, I think they might be referring to how Static Field (and similar things, like Veil) affect an infinite amount of people.

It’s pretty powerful, being able to stop an entire zerg with one ability.

I think that is fine, its what a control spell is supposed to do. And it’s not like I see it abused or anything in WvW either. Seems quite fine like it is, people can avoid it, run around, or not run into it. If you get caught in the barrier, yes, you get stunned a little bit and might receive a follow up, but it is hardly a zerg killer.

I thought after the RtL nerfs...

in Elementalist

Posted by: Ozymandias.5704

Ozymandias.5704

D/D is still good. Even after the nerf, RtL is still a strong skill. I’m not going to say the Focus is bad but it’s more situational.

I dunno, RTL is pretty bad now. Even when using it as a gap closer, one only often need to get ‘close enough’ in order to have a successful gap closer, but then you do not hit the enemy and the timer is 40 seconds. It is one of the, if not the longest, cool down gap closers in the game. 20 seconds was hardly game breaking (I think 15 seconds was OK for that matter, although it is more arguable), it was simply on par with other gap closers. Now we need to use utility for more reliable gap closers. I base this on my experience in WvW and PvE, PvP might be different, but that is why we got skill splits in the first place…

That said D/D is still pretty awesome, the build was not built around RTL. RTL was simply very nice to have in addition.

Hammer and Longbow for WvW

in Warrior

Posted by: Ozymandias.5704

Ozymandias.5704

Hi! I recently started using a warrior in WvW, and I am trying to figure out a build.

My main weapon will be hammer, since I think it is pretty fun, but when running in a zerg I was thinking on using a longbow for that added range attack and tagging. I would use sword and shield in place of the longbow if the guys I WvW with usually had less people, but the zerg is rather large at times

Current plan is knights gear, with runes of melandru:

http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/warrior/?8.2|2.1g.hd|3.1g.h1b|1n.7r.1n.7r.1n.7r.1n.7r.1n.7r.1n.7r|1n.64.1n.64.1n.64.1n.64.1n.64.1c.64|a3.0.p5a.k14.f3|15.1|5z.6g.6d.69.6m|e

Staff PvE Build (Damage Focused)

in Elementalist

Posted by: Ozymandias.5704

Ozymandias.5704

As an elementalist myself, I love the staff, but I love it for its strengths that include control and AOE’s.

I run this:

http://gw2buildcraft.com/calculator/elementalist/?1.0|6.1g.h1h|0.0.0.0.0.0|1c.71h.1c.71h.1c.71g.1c.71g.1c.b1h.1c.b1h|411.d1e.211.d1e.311.d1e.211.d1e.311.d1e.2s.d1e|0.p36.0.p56.k58|1b.7|1m.1v.21.23.29|e

I take no credit for the build, as I was inspired by another post somewhere, I just tweaked it to my needs. I run it in PvE and WvW. use more berserker trinkets if you want more offence, i just felt lazy and used celestial for more survivability.

That is, when I am not running my D/D build (almost pure knights gear)

Signet of the Wild improvement?

in Ranger

Posted by: Ozymandias.5704

Ozymandias.5704

I prefer cleric over knight if you’re going with a power build for pvp. For pve, knight is obviously better.

The way the ranger’s designed you’ll need some form of regen to compensate for the lack of teleports or immunities or immediate burst. The ranger is more of a backloaded character so stats that let you ramp up your damage by staying alive are better.

Interesting, thanks!

I just test a masterwork cleric set in WvWvW, and I did manage to stay alive a bit longer now than previously. Only level 67 now, but it worked out to 115 regen per second. Just enough to manage to hold out long enough in other AOE fields and with hostile conditions.

Next step I guess I will take the 2 second protection on dodge skill for even more safety.

0/10 (agility training)/20 (shared anguish + oakheart salve)/15 (nature’s bounty)/25 (mighty swap, commanding voice, or master’s bond if I want to get nasty)

Frost trap / signet of renewal (muddy terrain in a zerg) / signet of the wild

Apothecary or clerics (in today’s meta I prefer apothecary)/ Superior dwyana runes

Greatsword of Life / Rox’s :p Shortbow of Chilling (100% projectile finish chance in ice field from frost trap)

Pets: One cat and one miscellanious (siamoth is good in zergs, dog is good when roaming, drakes are good in aoe and zergs, red moa is good in zergs, etc)

Thanks! I was toying a little bit with shortbow and bleeds, but I am still low level and just getting the hang of it

FGS and Lightning Hammer are amazing! Do not touch them!!!

Shield and axe could use updates though, and bow needs its auto attack upped to give a conjur build a range viability (FGS can already be used as skirmish range, but I would like to have a real ranged option in my conjur build that isn’t just go back to lolterrible staff dps).

TBH: Fix staff first.

How are they really viable outside of the super high dps build that is entirely glass?

The hammer skills, and FGS skill are OK, the other things around them I am not really all that happy with. As for axe and shield etc, meh, then need some love.

Maybe of the summoned weapons were more like engineering kits they could be a bit better.

If we had engie kit we would be engies…
Having to drop the weapon on a specific place but being able to pick it back would be a good trade.

Yes, but the point was to have a weapon that just don’t disappear for some reason or other, wasting the skill.

Personally I feel the charges on them are on the low side, even while traited, making them more gimmicky rather than actually useful and something you want to build into.

I want to like them, but I really don’t see the benefit currently outside of having a niche setup.

Ozymandias.5704

I don’t really understand the RTL nerf either tbh. Was it really that strong?

Nerfs and buffs are natural, but 20 to 40 second cooldown is very extreme. Yes, it was a gap closer and nice gtfo, but what about those times where the gap is more then 1200 range, and you need to use several gap closers? Imo, they should at least have “fixed” it to have a stated 1550 range rather then take it down and increase cooldown both.

After all, it is a light armor class melee weapon, had it been a heavy armor user I would have thought differently. Low HP and low armor, we need mobility to stay alive, we can’t just tank it like the other classes and still deal good damage.

As for anyone that say “thief should be the most mobile class”, why? Thematically I would think an elementalist in light armor harnessing the power of lightning and air would be the most mobile thing out there. Having one class “supposed to” be this or that is a silly justification really. Balance a class around what makes it competitive and fun, not what other classes should be or not be.

All that said I still enjoy my elementalist, and my D/D build is quite strong when used right. It has a bit of a higher learning curve than my my guardian, but once you get the hang of it, it does alright. I am looking into new builds since I like to have range in WvW and team fights, but not really found a good build yet. Considering Scepter, Focus, but just not sure

Molten Gauntlet ticket claim time limit?

in Flame and Frost

In regards to the ticket for the molten gauntlet.
The character I want them on is only level 8. Can I wait until I get her to level 80 to claim them or is the ticket use limited in time?

Rather than take a chance, why not claim them now? You won’t be able to wear them until level 80 but the gauntlets take up the same inventory space as the ticket does after all.

Unless he has plans for a different character later, with different armor type

Yes, I liked the boss in this dungeon. It was not just a grind against a huge HP pool, it actually had some mechanics and needed a bit of player skill and cooperation to handle. Well done.

As long as its skins and such, I do not mind RNG too much. However I do hope Anet decides to add some “low end” skins as well eventually, not just very hard to get ones. I have neither the time nor desire to run a certain dungeon hundreds of times, but having some easier to access new skins now and then would be cool. Like they did with the gauntlets, I am happy about that.

But some new easy to get hold of skins for both armor and weapons, even at lower levels, would go a long way. They don’t have to be super flashy, or have lots of effects, just some more variety and alternatives.

The item looks amazing , the empty space not so much. My human female ranger would really appreciate a fix

How do I beat the final boss?

Did it last night, our party focused fired the berserker while dodging all the AOE, then we killed the other dude. Seems like just focusing on getting one down asap was the way to do it.

@Scumbag Mawile:

I don’t join guilds. That’s another thing I had more than enough of in WoW. I never joined a guild in GW1 and I’m not going to start now. Guilds are nothing but a means to frustration and cause you to hate people.

I just want to finish my storylines alone and in peace. Anet won’t let me do that. So, I have nothing left to do in this game. It’s over for me. I’ve reached an impasse. All I can do is just bide my time until the next mmo is released.

With that attitude you might be better off leaving GW indeed. I am not trying to be rude, but if a game cause you frustration and anger, that is a bad thing for you. Take a break, play some other games and come back later if you want, your account will still be here. Its just a game after all, don’t let it eat you up!

I often just solo things myself, or run with a few friends, but I have pugged the Zaithan dungeon, and the F&F dungeon. And you know what? It was not as bad as you make it out to be. People are generally helpful and friendly. It was actually pretty fun, and we had some epic fights. Do I agree on making 99% solo and the last piece a 5 man dungeon? Not really, but that is how it is and I just roll with it. I still had a blast, and the F&F dungeon in particular is not that hard anyways.

And another thing, you cannot expect ArenaNet to make all of us happy all the time! Yes, they might do things you do not like now and then, but then again many others like it. Pleasing everyone is simply impossible and only a fool will try to do so. Really, if you want a game you can be 100% satisfied with, you need to get single player games, in an MMO we all need to take some of the things we do not always enjoy with the things we do enjoy. Like the real world in many ways, we all share the world and have to allow others to have their fun as well.

I like these new gauntlets! But I am unsure on what character to use them on myself… I have so many that could use them. I might just save them for my Charr warrior once he gets a few levels… although they might fit my Human elementalist as well, or maybe even my Asura Engineer. My Norn guardian could use them also… hmmm…

Glad you like them. Personally though, they absolutely don’t fit the theme I have for my characters, so while I’ll still use them to save on the cost of crafting an Exotic glove one day, I’ll be transmuting them to a more pleasing appearance.

I would recommend you do not do that, it is a unique piece after all

Get them and let them stay account bound, then you might use them later.

Ranger or engineer need help

I like my lv 80 engineer in WvW. Very survivable, able to deal OK damage in a group, maybe not the “best”, but still fun! I use a toolbelt heavy spec, with PVT gear, and ot of escapes and blocks and dodges.

I play my level 20 Ranger in WvW as well, still pretty squishy due to crappy armor, but so far pretty fun actually. Only tested my power armor, but plan on going knights and bow heavy spec once I gain some levels.

Other than that I have had a blast with my lv 80 ele in WvW, my lv 80 guardian is also up to speed in WvW with her AH build. My level 80 mesmer is still untested in WvW, but I guess her berserker ranged damage spec is good in a zerg.

Overall, many options, but my biggest recommendation is to go with what seems more fun, not what has best dps (unless the two match for you).
