The problem with Guardians is trap stacking by multiple Guardians. One trapper by himself is fine when you get 2 or more its too easy to insta gib/sand bag people. Thats what needs to be addressed there needs to be diminishing returns if you get hit by 2 of the same kind of trap in a very short time frame the second trap should do substantially less damage. Its skill-less the way it is. Every game I have ever played had diminishing returns like that for stacking powerful aoe skills from different players in pvp eventually.
100% Could also be solved by not having the traps hidden. If there is a red circle, I’ll hesitantly hit it and try to evade or distort or block. If there are 6 circles stacked up I’m not going near it.
A better solution is there could be a time on the trap, i.e. it sticks around for 30 seconds and then fades. Better yet it sticks around for whatever the CD is. That would be even better. Dragons Maw for 90 seconds wouldn’t be bad because it is their elite.
Great thread, and lots of good comments. I currently main a chrono but play ele, guard, war and occasionally necro. My opinions are from playing them, but mostly playing against them.
Tempest is in an OK spot. It takes some good skill rotation to stay alive, and 1v1 you don’t die but also don’t kill anything. Need a little more damage, a little less heal.
I don’t play necro a lot, but if we have more than 1 or 2 on a team, we almost always lose. They do great damage, but have no sustain and I keep looking up at the health bars bars and they are always dead. 1v1 I just kite them and spam shatter. They have no pull or shadowstep. I think necro is in a crappy spot, but has been for the last few seasons.
War is in a good spot finally. Great in a team fight, 1v1 you can just kite them.
Guards are super annoying. I’m terrible playing them, but playing against them they seem to stack their traps on top of each other. Instant death. Just freaking add mark on the ground, just like a necro. If I see 6 circles I stay away.
Thief death blossom is stupid. Most thieves I play just spam it and then stealth. Then spam it and stealth. So I try to focus them because they die quickly. Team that with the occasional pistol unload thief and it is just annoying. Unload is great when I play my war with a ton of reflect, but mesmer doesn’t have much. They still aren’t difficult to kill. More thought needs to go into thief skills because of the spamming ability. Make playing well more rewarding.
Chrono is amazing. We have way too much block with scepter. When traited, Sc2 on 4.75 CD and Sh4 has 2 blocks on 40 sec CD. Block and shatter is about all I have to do. No worries about a change because it’s not meta. It’s great. Win 90% of 1v1, but not great in group play.

Why is a mesmer complaining about invis ganks?
No complaints about thief invisibility ganks. It actually requires a little skill. I occasionally play a thief and only carry 2 invis skills and one requires a hit to work. I would complain about an invisible trap that nearly kills me without the player even having to be there.
You sound like someone that hasn’t played mesmer in a while. As a mesmer, there is really only 1 reliable invis worth carrying(Decoy). And I use that mostly for the shatter fodder and to create a little more chaos. The days of PU condi builds are long over. Have to sacrifice way too much damage and utility to get a lot of invis, and doesn’t work in PvP because it takes 5 minutes to kill someone that way. That was fun in WvW a few years ago, though.
There are 3 classes that are ‘easy to play’: Necro, Warrior and Guardian. I was able to jump into the warrior and necro build and be competitive. After playing a dozen matches and learning the mechanics I could half of my 1v1s, both of them require killing someone pretty quick, but good players killed me and bad players died. The difference is it takes some skill to be great and all of them have been nerfed so much that no matter how good you get you can’t match a really talented player of most other classes. There are a ton of necros and warriors in emerald, but few after ruby. Anyone can jump into a DH, run the map up to Ruby and still be competitive.
All of the other classes (not playing a bunker) require a decent amount of skill to simply not die repeatedly. I main a mesmer, and when I started it was rough. I pretty much died over and over again in unranked. Thief took a lot of dying to figure out. I tried ele and after a dozen unranked matches decided I couldn’t take it anymore. I just couldn’t work the mechanics.
In all of my recent ranked matches as mesmer I fare pretty well. It took forever, but I think I’ve got the mechanics down pretty well. Can take most classes 1v1. Warrior, I just need to survive their initial condi hit, then confuse them and a couple of shatters and they melt. Engi’s can be a pain, but they die, they just take a while. I’m like 50/50 against engi’s. Druids are the same, they take forever to die but most do die. Thiefs insta kill me if they can get 2 good stealth hits in, otherwise they melt. Necros can take a while, but almost always lose, condi’s just come on too slow to be effective. I think the skill level for ele and rev are so high that most die pretty easily, but maybe 1/4 of them seem to kill me instantly. I feel like against all clases but DH I win 50-70% of 1v1s. But I die instantly with more than 1 player. All of the classes though, when a really good player comes at me they win, and that’s cool.
They set traps on a point and go hide behind a rock. The traps get me to 30-40% health, and none of my skills can get me out of it. I blink or retreat or dodge, and it just throws me back into the trap to take the damage. I swear when the trap goes off I can see their toon laughing as they appear. I’ll heal and get some clones out and shatter twice to get up to 75% health and get a couple of ranged hits in or blocks. I get the DH down to around 20% health and I think I’m winning. Then all they need to do is F1, drop another trap and hit me once or twice, grab a coffee while I’m stuck in the trap dying, they come back in time to stomp me, and magically they have 100% health as they do it. That is most of the DH I play, if they are a bad enough player or I get them while Dragon’s maw is on CD. Any fool can go stack 3-4 traps and hide.
I feel like Anet just wants us to give them $10 for a character slot expansion.
I only main warrior in pvp and fractals. I use gs in fractals for the damage and it’s BORING. I’m sick of the 1000 blades animation on my sunrise. But gs is useless in pvp and the pvp meta uses mace, so why are people asking for more on mace? Personally for pve I do sw/sh and lb. the damage between sword and mace are comparable but I prefer having the gap close over the extra block, plus my button mashing results in slightly more damage with sw.
Grow lamp used to be profitable (10g +/-), until the price of quartz crystals jumped up. Now they are more like 2g profit every 10 days. I changed my toon with Jewling to Weaponcrafting due to more profit there.
Been running Paladin for a while in unranked. I’d run marauder if I was a better player. I play more power shatter though. Still use the meta, but based upon the arena I use GS or Sc/Sw as secondary weapon. Sc2 is insanely powerful provided dodges are used up, but the GS 1 and 4 are so useful when someone tries to run. Other than confusion (and who can’t clear 1 condi), condi is just so weak for chrono that I don’t understand why merc amulet is in the meta. Unless Rune of Perplexity is available I just don’t see the point, and that would only force me to use Sc/Sw not staff, which is only great for escaping. Without the rune Sc2 still gets most of it’s power from DD. The spreadsheets may not agree, but it feels like the extra crit on shatter1 is a lot more powerful than the added damage from confusion on all 5 shatters combined (unless you have perplexity). In that case I feel I would rather have Carrion anyhow.
I played one PvP event today and got 4 of the dailies. Even losing a match and you’ll always get 2 and often all 3 dailies. In not all 3 then I’ll go do the vista viewer or lumbered/forager/miner for the last one. PvP may seem intimitati g but it shouldn’t be.
Or go do wvw, even solo you can always get one or two with little to no effort.
It seems most people that complain about this are the ones that only do one of the play styles. One of the reasons for dailies is to try to get people to branch out. I only started pvp and wvw and feactals for legendaries. Now I’m so glad I did that, they add so much to the game. I’d suggest branching out from what you typically do. Some of them you’ll dislike but you may find a new part of the game to love.
Zerker warrior for fractals because of high dps
Pre hot used ele staff back line in wvw. Don’t play wvw anymore. Will check on meta if we ever get alpine back but hope to dust off ele then.
Zerker mes for everything else. Most fun to play, just not as well suited for above two unless in well coordinated group.
These posts are all right on. My two mains currently are mes and war. I only use my war for feactals and the dps. It’s not that much fun to play. Though survivability shouldn’t be a problem. Just go get the wvw meta where sw/wh provides great mobility and condi clear. Then either warhammer or longbow. But for open world I use a variation of the chrono shatter meta. Sw/sh and then either gs or scepter/sw. Great survivability and fun to play but champions can take forever to kill. If scepter/sw as alt weapon you can perma block and generate clones and just shatter. Almost impossible to die.
Choose wisely :
sorry if this is a silly question but.. how do i read this? so for example Dusk says “Crafting Price(buy)” is 634g then "Trading Price(buy) is 970g does this means that it is way better to do the collection and then buy all the mats to craft it than just buy it straight?
The low price is if you craft everything to the bloody end. For the sword or greatsword that’s 90 time gated deldrimor steel ingots, so you’ll spend 3 months making those alone. Changed all of them to TP for dawn and the collection cost went from about $600 to over $900.
Great patch. Fixed a lot and focused on what was important. Announcement was very well written. The shared inventory slot with the auto 80 feels like ‘we know we kittened up, how about some nice free stuff’. I’ll take it and look forward to the next update.
Shatter build is useless in pve anyhow. I still take this trait because I can get one shatter and eventually another. But for the big pve fights I just try to get 3 pistols or sword men up and keep them up. Shattering slows down dps unless you can get them right back up. In the smaller pve skirmishes and the trash mobs in hot I shatter like crazy with shield, I don’t think anything will make that faster and it doesn’t even matter whether I kill them in 4 or 6 seconds. CD in shield is so quick that reducing CD on trait wouldn’t help. I’d just like CD on F1 reduced. Haha
Makes me want to spend more time working with my mesmer and less face tanking with my warrior. Mesmer, like thief, can be the strongest pvp prof in the game by those willing to study. Thanks for the video. I spent like an hour watching this, pausing and rewinding, re watching, trying to figure out what was going on.
In general I wouldn’t expect much help on the price of a legendary. 1. They are supposed to be extremely expensive. They wouldn’t be as desired if everyone on the map has one (already a lot of people already do). 2. Those who used 250 AG at 3 gold each would be quite upset if the drop rate of the required mats increased and the price was stabilized to 1-2 gold or if the number required was dropped to 200 or so. All you can hope for is price volatility and put your buy orders in at the low end of the curve and wait. Currently the cost of a 1st gen legendary is down quite a bit from the drop in prices of T6 mats. As someone that spent 50% more them than the current price to make my legendaries last year, that is a little annoying.
What is there to do with Dragonite ore? Make a Vial of Salt? Amulets are pretty cheap at 30 Laurel or 20 Laurel + 250 badges of honor. A lot cheaper to use Laurels than all the T6 mats required for the salt.
If you’re making ascended gear those are expensive (1000+ gold for a set), and you’ll get a ton of Dragonite ore running any kind of farm (world boss, silverwastes event or chest, fractals, HoT map events). I’ve thrown out well over 100,000 dragonite ore, it’s about the most useless thing in the game. Even if I crafted ascended everything for all of my toons i’d have probably thrown out over 500k dragonite ore from all the farming I’d have to do.
Living world was abandoned a long time ago. After season 1 LW was abandoned in favor of living instanced content.
It’s not the fact that the legendaries are delayed/ not coming at all that is upsetting. I currently have two legendary weapons (just fined bolt a few weeks ago) and will probably make a third over the next year but I’m not planning on it now so I could care less about the delay. It’s just that the xpac news had a lot of hype that in the months leading up to October was slowly backtracked for the sake of shipping it. Now we’ve bought the xpac with the expectation that this content would be delivered in a timely fashion. To me, I’d put that at 8-12 months for the promised stuff. The big reason I purched the xpac was to get the new living world content. I figured the expac should come with 2 seasons of living world. So my question is what are the 70 people working on the next xpac working on? That shouldn’t even come out for 2 years. How are they developing content for chapter 6 of the story when chapters 4 and 5 haven’t been written yet? I understand moving more people onto the living world content. I want to play it. But those 70 people should all be working on what we were promised with this xpac, including the living world, inclusing the other 17 legendaries. Once the fires are put out then work on the next xpac. I didn’t hesitate with the last xpac and didn’t hesitate to buy gems because I was getting a lot of fun from one low price I paid years ago. Now It starting to feel like a money grab and I’m beginning to feel scammed. I mean how can you be working on your next xpac when the one we caught isn’t finished yet? Delay the legendaries all you want but if I don’t see them all before the next xpac is announced you won’t be getting another dime from me. it just shows you won’t deliver on what you sell. For the record I would rather wait 4 years for another xpac and see HOT delivered I full than see an xpac next year and not get what I paid for.
Yea, a great thief is about the best in the game at instant death on anyone but a warrior, who can take the first hit and live to hit back. I have died a lot of embarrassing deaths to great thieves. I have an alt thief and I’ve got to say I don’t know how they do it. I think it’s one of the hardest to learn professions that has the highest ceiling. I’ve beat a lot of average/bad thieves with my mes running several builds. Power Phantasm, Condi Shatter, PU Roamer. I’ve had a lot of long fights that feel epic against just about every profession running several builds. Now I’m running a build based on the Chronophantasma Shatter meta and having a blast. When I run my warrior or necro (other two mains) they are almost mindless. (GS2,GS1, swap, S1, F1, swap GS2…..). I love jumping in the mesmer and having so many crazy skills and traits to play with. Swapping traits and I use almost all weapons.
Once we get legendary armor…. Everyone will look the same. I mean I’ve been wanting to get more armors because the old ones are getting old, but once there is legendary armor if you want to show off your prestige and hard work you don’t get to play around with different t looks. The silverwastes will be populated with a bunch of people wearing the same outfit.
From the site posted there are a lot of limitations for the free account. It’s basically a teaser for people to try. $50 to upgrade is not a lot.
The greatest part of the limitations is the gem store. They can convert gems to gold, but can’t convert gold to gems. So if they want something from the gem store you got to pay.
Also something to consider is the original game had a lot of sales. I bought it around Christmas a few years back for $10. After getting almost 2 years of enjoyment it was probably the best $10 I ever spent and didn’t hesitate to spend another $50.
Personally, as a casual player I enjoy the expansion content. It is fun to have more challenging PvE content, the old stuff was so boring. The new masteries are great, gives me something else to work towards. I’ve been playing around with new builds for all of my toons. So they all need to get the hero points to get them. I had almost completely switched to WvW and PvP before the xpac, and now all I do is PvE. So I don’t know how bad WvW has gotten.
I also really enjoyed LW1. I never did any of the instanced content as I didn’t particularly enjoy the personal story. Those who said LW2 was basically something you played once or twice and never again were right. I liked the world changing around me of LW1. It was actually a living, changing world. LW2 was not at all a living world, it was just some story line to play. I played one or two of the episodes and then stopped. I didn’t care about the story line, I just wanted to play new content with lots of people when you have to coordinate a map. Figure it out for the first few days to a week, and then play it as much as you want. Annual content like the festival of the winds was fun. It was great as temporary because after a month you didn’t want to play it anymore anyhow. Then there was something else.
I’ll take either more like LW1 or another xpac, but please LW2 was basically just a waste of anet’s resources.
Flash is right, spend an hour or two one saturday doing events in the SW. You can even just LFG to the 80-90% SW the whole time and do VW over and over again Then get on a chest train for another couple of hours and you’ll probably have your stack. Plus 20+ gold in loot depending on how fast it runs. It’s not ‘fun’ but throw something on the TV and go. I typically spend an hour a week in there just to keep a steady income, and I’ve got thousands of shards. Shame is all you can do with the other ascended mats is throw them away.
Well tbh, I’m all for this, for once, I don’t usually agree with many things that are posted on these forums.
But if they implement something like this, we should have the chance to have multiple sets of armor setups that are easily attainable instead of keeping all these bloody sets in my inventory.
I agree 100%, but then what incentive would there be to buy bash slot and bank tab expansions.
I would love this feature. My first toon a necro I always carried a condi and zerker armor set and all weapons. Now I just wear zerker and never change play style because I don’t want to screw with it. I have 6 toons now and the only one that carries two armor sets is my mes because I haven’t decided how to play, PU condi shatter and zerker phantasm are both so much fun. Sadly I will have to pick one.
To my original point I’m not throwing money at a bag slot or bank tab but would pay if they gave us an add on that gave us a place to store another set of armor, two weapons, trinkets and traits. Easy build switch button. i imagine a large number of us would. Something like 600-700 gems per toon or 2000 account wide sounds fair.
Lengendary weapons were the worst things to happen to the game. I loved playing PvP, loved playing WvW. Then was given the greatest gift of all, the Legend dropped. This caused me to slowly abandon the things I enjoyed doing to instead spend hours (hundreds) grinding for a legendary weapon. Spend every last dime to craft it. Equipped it. Ran around WvW again for a few months, but got sick of the look of Bifrost. I wanted something else. But once you go legendary, you can’t go back, you always have to show it off. So to get a different look I broke down and spent hundreds more hours grinding those aweful Silverwastes to get Bolt. As soon as I got it a few months ago, I decided to take a long break from gw2. I felt like one of the biggest idiots running around with my flashy new Bolt, the most common sword in the game (unofficially). There is no single sword I see more often than Bolt, same for Bifrost. So with this new legendary armor how do you know you’re the best character in the game, you’ll look exactly the same as the guy standing next to you. Armor was one of those cool things, you try to make something to make you stand out, different, show your personality. And when you get sick of it, you switch out to something different. So with Legendary Armor the ‘goal’ of the game is to get the ‘best’ armor that 1000s of other people are running around in. I can imagine a whole guild running around in identical armor.
The kicker here is Anet just cut off a profit stream. They made a ton of money off of new armors and outfits from the gem store. Who is going to buy them now when the goal is legendary armor. Yes, they had weapons in the gem store, but those never seemed as popular as the armor sets. Generally the people that spend the most time in the game are the gem store spenders, now most of those people will instead be working toward legendary armor and backpacks and won’t be purchasing the gem store stuff.
I started the game with a ranger and got incredibly bored at level 55 and I currently think the best use of my ranger is as a bank. I consider the ranger to be lacking a lot just in enjoying the play style.
So I made a new toon as a necro because I thought it would be fun. It is a ton more fun. I main my necro when I’m farming and for dungeons and have him built as a zerker dagger deathshroud that does good damage and has high survivability. For pvp necro is pretty terrible. My mes and ele and warrior and thief are all better. For wvw ele and warrior are of course better but necro works. That said I think necro is broken because conditions are terrible. I think one of the main aspects of being a necro is toying with your opponents via conditions. Yes I can leave someone with 2 minutes of one stack of bleed but come on. Condo necros don’t have enough differing types of conditions. Signet of spite if it didn’t have a 60 tick cool down. Epidemic is one the most powerful condi spells in the game with a short cd. But there is a problem when my condi thief can down an ele in 5 seconds while my condi necro can’t.
