RLHawk.3290

Just wanted to stop by the forums and say that my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed playing Stronghold last night!

We PvP a lot together, and all of the matches we played were incredibly fun! We had no problem understanding the mechanics quickly, and it was a blast figuring out how to balance helping our wallbreakers push forward, get more supply for more of them, and defend our own lane at the same time. And the 5 players seems like a perfect number for making it slightly difficult to do all 3 effectively while still making it possible and creating fun fights.

I wish I had recorded my favorite match to share here — both teams were playing well, but they were a little ahead of us breaking down our gates and engaging our lord. In the final seconds of the game both of our lords were in the downed state and we just barely managed to get off the stomp before them.

In another match they broke through to our lord before we even damaged their gate because we spent too long just fighting over supply. So we changed up and 3 of us focused entirely on defending our lord while my wife and a necro focused on pushing through their gates. We ended up loosing the match, but not before getting their lord to half health. I never felt like a game was past being able to be turned around, and I’ve never had so much fun defending something! I can’t wait to play this along side Conquest in the future!

Thanks for an incredible time last night!

No word from ArenaNet about any of the Bugs! Hopefully someone replies here on the forums. as we have only had one minor fix so far

They’re very much aware of this thread and have directed people here to report bugs (See https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/3-16-15-patch-bugs/4885176)

And they’ve already fixed a few. Give them time. It’s still early in the day at ArenaNet and we don’t want them accidentally pushing out more bugs in a rush to fix these. I don’t think there’s really any reason for them to reply when they’ve already acknowledged the thread and directed people here.

Are you going to buy HoT?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

RLHawk.3290

Based on what’s revealed so far, this is how much the expansion is worth to me.
1) New Map = $5
2) New Story = $5
2) New Profession = $5
3) New Non-RNG skins (weapon, armor) = $5
4) New group content = $0
5) New dynamic events = $0
6) New dungeons = $0
7) New guildhalls = $0
8) New PvP Mode – Stronghold = $5
9) New WvW BL = $5

Thus I am willing to buy the expansion no more than $30.

If I forgot to list anything, it would probably worth $0 to me anyway.

Odd to me that the new group content, dynamic events, guild halls, and possible dungeons they’re adding are worth nothing to you. …would you honestly prefer to have each bit separate from each other kitten DLC? Because that’s what you’re asking for. I personally think it’s much better to do it the way they’re doing as a complete package.

Anyway, in regards to OP — yes, I’ll definitely be buying GW2 HoT!

As a side node, if I’d been paying $15/month for a subscription, then I’d have paid close to $500 already. I’d gladly buy this expansion even for $60.

Teeny Tiny Expansion

RLHawk.3290

Might I suggest watching this video I saw on Reddit? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2OW7S1bpLE

In summary, what people generally expect from an expansion is:
1) 2 or more new classes
2) New continent of new zones
3) 1 or more new races
4) 5+ Dungeons
5) New PvP / RvR maps
6) New game modes
7) New Raids
8) Lots of new skins
9) Lots of new skills

Now, disregarding the fact that MANY expansions don’t actually give ALL of that, here’s what we know HoT will give us in comparison:

1) 1 new class plus 9 new sub-classes of sorts, making it almost like 10 new classes.
2) New area, as expected.
3) No new race, as it doesn’t add anything to end-game, which is what most people want.
4) New challenging group content and boss encounters. Might include dungeons, might not. Either way, they know what people are wanting from more dungeons and I’m confident they’ll do a good job with it.
5) A new PvP map and WvW map, as well as changing existing WvW maps.
6) At least one new game mode via Stronghold.
7) Again, challenging group content.
8) New legendaries, new armor seen in trailer, and likely much more.
9) Lots of new skills via professions and new class, PLUS entirely new mechanics via masteries.

In addition to those things people expect, we’re getting guild halls with brand new progression and mechanics there, and best of all, all of this works together to form a reward/progression system that can be built on for years to come. For me, it’s everything and more that I wanted from an expansion!

RLHawk.3290

Hmmmm,

Micheal, thanks for the update.
Just to give some feedback. I do understand why you select a portion off players. I also understand that you really need as many people that where invited to fill in the survey. So giving an ingame reward is good. I doubt that 400 gems is the right thing though. I think it should be something unique and non tradable.

For example I’m thinking bout a mini Taimi and Gollem. It would be unique, not tradable and desirable.

Every 1 year or so you can give the same item in game for free and replace it.

The effect would be that everyone would get the item, but filling in your survey means you get it before others.

This would prevent these kind of threads escalating (cause as, you have seen it will be in public anyway, and this thread was made with the right intentions).

I’m pretty sure giving away a unique item that nobody else even had a chance to get would cause a lot more uproar.

Here’s a not so wild assumption. They’re sending the surveys to the people who post the best and positive things on the official forums, negative feedback posters get nothing.

Then I should get a survey for sure! Hooray! But honestly, I believe you’re misguided.

They wouldn’t be conducting a survey as a marketing strategy. They’d be conducting a survey to actually learn stuff, in which case they’d want a large variety of player types.

Not to mention that they’re not going to hand pick people by spending thousands of hours reading the forums just so that they can get inaccurate information.

So we’ve gone from Disappointing to Super Epic? I have seen a lot of threads about Disappointing, and I’ve seen a handful of threads saying they enjoy the event, but I haven’t seen any posts, let alone threads claiming this event is “SUPER EPIC.”

It’s a fun event, I’m enjoying myself, but it’s still just another event. It is cool to see a zone so drastically changed but I don’t think many if any are rocked in the boots by this, and I certainly haven’t see anyone claiming to have been, so where exactly is this even coming from? Who is actually saying this?

Actually I do think it’s super epic. Along with lots of their other updates! And I’m rocked in my boots (whatever that means) enough to be gushing about it to all my friends, so there’s that.

I don’t get why people are calling this the best update. I’m not really caught up in the suspense of the destruction of LA. Is my heart supposed to be pounding at the sight of the fire and destruction with a big giant drill in sight, while you see children and soldiers walking as slowly as they possibly can to the exit?
For months we’ve been hyped up with the introduction of ‘new’ monsters, slowly learning their mechanics and how to counter them, only to find them all on one map , in large groups where the only real counter is a mass zerg, distributed amongst underwhelming events, with Scarlet spectating.

Best update? No bug fixes at all, and tons created. How are people calling this “SUPER EPIC” when you have all of Tyria flocking around playing hide and seek with children and bugged events, disappointing loot, and people that care more about the well being of the moa racers than anything else in LA.

It’s true — I do care enough and have enough memories of Lions Arch for it to affect me for it to be destroyed. I’m sorry it’s not that meaningful to everyone.

On the last part though — sorry, but what?! o.O What kind of loot are you wanting?! How could it possibly be more rewarding without completely destroying the economy in just a few days?

Bugs are one thing. But people complaining about not having crafting stations in Vigil Keep? Crafting is way better in Rata Sum anyway, but that’s besides my point — my point is that I personally think it’s awesome when the story/updates affect our gameplay. It makes it more like a real world. So it makes me probably more frustrated than it should when people complain about not having their crafting stations next to their trading post and I’m like, “Guys! Staff Ele in PvP

I play quite a bit of PvP lately with my staff ele. I’ve been playing staff ele since launch, so I have a lot of experience.

My build is kinda half way between zerker and soldier, giving me a fairly good balance between damage and health/armor.

Nice thing about staff ele is that with so many AoE attacks, you can do about the same in 1v1 or 1v5 when it comes to damage and even control. Tricky part is staying alive, which comes down to controlling the enemy a lot (static field, gust, unsteady ground, etc.) and timing your heals, condition removal, and dodges well.

We can also do pretty good spike damage too though, with fire fields and blasts and all.

There has been a huge amount of discussion around sub classes. I would love to see you guys close out this particular area by either putting a sub class proposal together (Sentence detailing how it would work) or deciding as a group that it isn’t relevant at this point.

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes and see quite a few of the counter arguments based upon assumptions around balancing etc. Where possible we should try not to make decisions around feasibility of ideas through assumptions.

In short I would like to see if the CDI group thinks it is a relevant part of Horizontal Progression at this stage of GW2’s life?

Chris

I’m not sure I do really feel like it’s a relevant part of Horizontal Progression at this stage of GW2’s life, personally. I kinda feel like it should be added quite a bit down the road with some additional vertical progression like a new level cap and stuff at the same time where those sub classes actually make your class more powerful rather than as purely horizontal.

Though, as I think about it, one way of doing it horizontally that I kinda like the idea of is having additional weapon skills that are locked to specific trait lines. I’m an ele, so not sure how it’d work for other classes, but it’d be cool if I could unlock additional fire weapon skills by putting points in Fire, water by putting points in water, etc. In that case I think they’d simply be unlocked using skill points, like you’ve been doing lately with healing skills.

I think my vote also goes for Sociopolitical Diversification, because much of the things I want with Role Diversification are actually more in lines with vertical progression. Things like un-changable traits offering passive bonuses that are acquired over a long period of time, maybe even with Laurels or something.

But as far as horizontal progression, player housing and possibly new crafting skills related to it definitely have my vote!

I’ve actually been incredibly impressed with Living Story lately. I feel like it’s been getting consistently better and better throughout the span of the game and that everything you’ve said you want to do with it is exactly what I want to see you do with it.

Perhaps even more overlapping ongoing stories could be good. For example, something like Ronah.2869 said above with the community building something big. That’d be awesome, I think, and it could continue to happen even as other living story updates came out. Achievements could be based on bringing in supply, and maybe even WvW could have an additional set of dolyaks delivering supplies to guard or something, though that might be a bad idea.

My only complaint is when updates feel too separated and like they don’t connect to each other. I like how every update is different though — scarlet, new dungeon, dragon/bosses, etc. I never know what to expect, and that’s super exciting.

Instant Trait Reset?

in Twilight Assault

Posted by: RLHawk.3290

RLHawk.3290

It gets to one a question that I feel is at the heart of video games: How much filler/slow-down is fun?

Take XP boosters. Everyone likes to get XP and everyone likes to level up, so it’s easy to understand people liking XP boosters, whether paid for or free. That’s why you occasionally earn them in game, they’re in the birthday chest, etc. If you pay for boosters, you’re objectively leveling up faster than other players…but are you having more fun? If you’re having more fun, shouldn’t the game company just boost XP for everyone, so everyone has more fun?

That sounds reasonable; there’s a reason “grind” has such negative connotations. A cynical onlooker would say that every non-boosted player is being slowed down in order to encourage players to buy boosters. That’s one of the major frequent criticisms of free to play games and of cash stores, even in non-free games like GW2, so it’s a warranted concern. No one likes to have their time wasted.

That said, up until the recent addition of the retrait item, there wasn’t any way for the developer to make money off the inconvenience of resetting traits, so it doesn’t seem likely that the system was developed with the cash shop in mind.

Was it just a poor design decision to make players hunt down trait trainers, or does that inconvenience serve another purpose, like strengthening player-build identities and giving a sense of weight to decisions and the trait system?

I don’t think either way of handling traits (free and convenient, nominal fee and slightly inconvenient) is inherently better than the other. They both have their pros and cons, and will appeal to different people. Obviously, someone, or rather multiple people, designing the game thought the pros were worth the cons here, because they went with the system we have. There’s definitely going to be a portion of the player base who disagrees, but they can’t please everyone.

This is an awesome post!! I really enjoy thinking about stuff like this.

One of the interesting things about the discussion of “how much slow-down is fun” is that what we really want often isn’t what we think we want. And it varies from player to player. But take for example giving yourself items through cheat codes in a game. If the game is good, there’s usually something that you want that you don’t have yet. An option for some games might be to cheat to give yourself that item. But in doing so, you’re robbed of most of that items value — the journey it took to get there. But how much value comes from the time it took to get there vs. the end result itself varies a lot from player to player.

As another example, leveling to 80 in GW2 is quite easy compared to many games. To some that makes it pointless, to some it provides a perfect balance, and to others it still takes way to long. But what’s more interesting is that most people’s enjoyment or lack of enjoyment of that experience can change depending on how they’re looking at it.

Instant Trait Reset?

in Twilight Assault

Posted by: RLHawk.3290

RLHawk.3290

You think it’s awesome? I guess that means you’ll be buying them? There is no way I will; and this offering makes me less likely to buy gems from them in the future. I spent a lot of time and money, but it was fun at the time.

A consumable for trait resets doesn’t make the game more tedious — but it does seem to kill the hope I had that it’d get better.

Personally — I hate being forced to make a choice between wasting money and wasting time — having that decision thrust into my face is a constant irritant. Previously it wasn’t a choice as they didn’t have functionality for resetting traits in the field; now that they do, I either have to pretend that this doesn’t exist or stew.

My objection to this is that — based on my personal response — I think it’s a poor business decision. If you or others respond by spending cash to buy these and are happy to have them in the gem store, then perhaps I’m wrong — and if that’s the case, have fun.

But I get the impression that you’re probably defending this offering out of loyalty, rather than happiness at seeing this in the gem store. If that’s the case, consider that my comments might be sincere.

Hehe. Perhaps I am defending it out of loyalty. So far I haven’t bought any. I have bought several revive orbs and some repair canisters before. I can see picking some of these up from time to time if I’m wanting to re-trait in the middle of a failing dungeon run and have a few gems leftover from buying other stuff.

But here’s my point of view — as far as deciding rather to spend time or money on something, are not most of the items on there somewhat similar? All boosters, picks, salvage kits, etc. Even pack space is primarily bought to save time — as a convenience.

Now, Gasoline.2560, above, argues that the convenience argument holds no merit, but I would disagree. I tend to think that convenience items are really the main way that microtransaction funded games can/should work. If you sell power, you divide the community between paying and non-paying players, which is bad. I think everyone agrees on that. But if you sell purely aesthetic stuff, then either you don’t provide a whole lot of incentive to buy anything, thereby not funding your game, OR, you make the very best looking stuff pay only. Like if legendaries were only obtainable in gem store. And by doing that, you exclude top content from non-paying players. I recognize that GW2 has aesthetic items in the cash shop, and I personally have never bought any. I don’t really mind them though, because they don’t hurt me and I don’t feel like I’m missing out on any content of value because of it. The best looking items (though admittedly this is just personal preference) are the items obtained through playing, not paying.

But with convenience items, I feel like you can provide a very good balance of incentive and choice. Incentive, because the convenience is very nice, and time is valuable. But also choice, because it’s not necessary and the game is still just as fun without it.

If your argument is not against any of that and is instead simply that you should be able to re-trait from anywhere regardless, then that’s not really a complaint about the item, but rather a complaint about how traits/builds work.
I think wanting to re-trait any time freely is a valid suggestion and I can kinda see both sides of it myself. On the one hand, I feel like your traits are your build, and should maybe be even more locked in, since skills are what you can freely change about. On the other hand, since it is such a minor deal to change your build, why not just make it no deal at all? But to me, that’s not really related to having this item in the game.

You wouldn’t believe the lengths people go on defending this sort of business practice. A well written reply, ought to be replied by someone who will just dismiss your opinion once again with a simple convenience argument that practically holds no merit.

I do agree that linuxotaku.4731’s reply was well written and respectable, and appreciate him taking the time to do that. I apologize that my argument may have been somewhat dismissive. That was not my intent, though re-reading it I can see how it may have come across that way. Sorry. I would ask though that you read what I wrote above about the “convenience argument” and let me know what you think. As a developer who hopes to one day develop games, I’m truly interested in any better ways of doing things. But so far the GW2 model is really the best I’ve seen.

I think this is a ridiculous thing to get upset about. It’s a convenience item — not at all necessary, but handy at times for people who don’t mind throwing money at the game reasonably often to make it free for everyone else. Seems like the perfect thing to put in the gem store to me. Just like repair canisters. Yes — you can go and repair lots of places, and that’s a LOT cheaper. But if you wanna use money to be lazy, you can. And you can support the game in the process.

I’m perfectly willing to spend money on the game. I’ve bought items which are just for convenience (e.g. unlimited use gathering tools) — that seemed fine with me. But traits and builds are a core part of the game; I am not OK with needing to spend money on this. I can accept a cost in silver as a way to limit inflation, but not a cost in gems.

What would you think if they made map travel cost gems rather than gold (silver)? I mean, that’s just a convenience, right? You could spend all your time playing running from one map to another … but it wouldn’t be much fun.

Their choice to make this a paid item tells me about their priorities, and it makes me sad. Anet can make the parts of the game I find interesting more tedious or expensive … and I’ll have less fun when I play the game. It’s their choice — just not really a good business decision. (Right now I’m taking a break from playing; this isn’t the main reason, but it gives me more reason not to come back.)

You’re talking as if they have somehow limited how you used to always re-trait. You /don’t/ need to spend money on it. The silver cost remains the same as ever. If they REPLACED map travel cost with gem cost, then yeah, I’d be upset. If they added a way to use gems as an alternative to that cost, like an item that teleported you to a specific waypoint when you used it, then I’d have absolutely no problem with that.

They have NOT made anything MORE tedious at all though. Instead they added something you can spend some money on for relatively negligible convenience and thereby support the game. I think that’s awesome, and shows that their priorities are in the right place.

Instant Trait Reset?

I think this is a ridiculous thing to get upset about. It’s a convenience item — not at all necessary, but handy at times for people who don’t mind throwing money at the game reasonably often to make it free for everyone else. Seems like the perfect thing to put in the gem store to me. Just like repair canisters. Yes — you can go and repair lots of places, and that’s a LOT cheaper. But if you wanna use money to be lazy, you can. And you can support the game in the process.

#RLHawk I stopped Reading after "[Yea] I play it… " If I wanted or needed a lecture I join Uni again.

Get me WvW

Alrighty then. ’tis a shame I wasted my time typing all that.

Regardless though, I was simply trying to make the point that ANet cares just as much or more about WvW as you do. It’s good that you’re eager for it to be fixed though, so I’ll stop fighting you. After all, as far as our love of WvW, we seem to be on the same page.

What the game def needs more of are apologists.

Lol. I’m not entirely sure if that’s genuine or sarcasm. Either way, thank you! Sometimes I feel compelled to defend the game and the developers. Other times I feel it’s fairly useless on the forums, so I can see it as either genuine encouragement or sarcasm and appreciate it either way. Hehe

Trait reset per Gem Shop

I would have thought they’d move to free trait re-specs at some point, but instead they put them in the gem store.

Is 3 silver really that different than free?

This is purely a convenience item, which is exactly what /should/ be added to the cash shop.

“RLHawk you playing the same game ? 1 Good WvW patch and 1 half decent over 13months. PvE has gotten what ? 20-25 ptaches

Yes, I play it. And I play largely WvW. Perhaps you need some history? Obviously initially a lot of the focus was on seeing how well everything worked on such a large scale and doing lots of bug fixes. After a while the decision to remove Orbs of Power was made, because they did more harm than good. Shortly after that loot was improved. Then events were added to help breakout of your starting location when overwhelmed too long. Then Laurels were added with the ability to get them in only WvW, and load times were improved a lot. They made orange swords only show for larger battles, opening up all kinds of new strategies for sneak attacks. Leaderboards were added. Ranks were added, along with special abilities to use your rank points on. Culling was removed — before it was removed in PvE, mind you. More buying options were given so that more and more could be acquired through only playing WvW. Tons of improvements to siege and abilities were made. Obsidian Sanctum was given its own map. Traps were added. The ability for commanders to ping maps and draw paths was added. (Not strictly WvW, but has the biggest influence there.) Matchmaking was improved. Rewards were increased again greatly with new incentives for PvEers to do WvW for help buying ascended items. Siege blueprints were made trade-able, balancing their cost and encouraging their further use. Rewards were again increased greatly. Borderland bloodlust was added, and in today’s update again rewards have been increased as well as both incentives to play and to do well. And then seasons starting in a couple of weeks with new rewards and incentives.

On top of all of that, nearly every patch for the last year at least has WvW specific bug fixes and minor improvements to rewards, gameplay, and balance in the update notes. And new and improved rank abilities have been added almost every update since they came out, as well as new finishers.

For the gametype that WvW is, I’m really not sure what you expect or want. Do you want celebrations to affect WvW more? Do you want world bosses and events and story content to be added to WvW? I’m assuming that Borderlands Bloodlust and Ranks & Abilities are the only things you consider decent updates, and I’d agree that they’re probably the most game changing. But the beauty of WvW is that each weak is its own story. It doesn’t /need/ progressive story content added to it, because you and I playing it is what creates that story.

As I see it, WvW is a huge focus of theirs. But to make changes similar to PvE changes at such a pace would be a big mistake in my opinion. WvW is a very different game type.

Fix thw WvW now, we wont fall for your Marketing plot and do your new Dungeon anyway or jump onto your baby “sPvP”. we want only one thing… The Massacre we come to Love as WvW.

Nice try but you failed now give us WvW back

This is pretty silly. ANet loves WvW, and doesn’t want to take anyone away from it.

TA F/U path is being removed

in Twilight Assault

Posted by: RLHawk.3290

RLHawk.3290

I hadn’t done that particular path yet, and now I know I never will.

I WAS going for completion. I did believe though that with the existing permanent content (especially the content linked to permanent achievements), it was safe to wait until I had some free time.

Kitten me, right?

Thanks, ANet.

To elaborate a little more on why this is so disheartening for me.

  1. As if the living story achievements didn’t put enough pressure on me, now I learn that the permanent content can be taken away at a moment’s notice, so not wanting to miss out, I am now under the additional pressure to complete all dungeon paths, all jumping puzzles and whatever else as soon as possible, leaving nothing to be explored at my own pace (which is what I loved (past tense) most about Guild Wars 2).
  2. I am actually fine with the Living World concept making permanent changes to the world. Things change, they evolve. I have always been a supporter of the Living World. But please consider giving us some advance warning (more than a single day) to give us the chance to catch up before taking content away. I think this is not unreasonable.

Thank you.

No achievements are being removed — only some added.

I’m a bit of a completionist myself, but for a game this size, try to just focus on enjoying what’s here rather than feeling like you have to do ever single possible thing there’s ever available to do. The beautiful, awesome thing is that there is and will be more to do every time you log in. Rather you do ALL of it or not, it’s okay. That’s a cool, awesome thing.

This is also exactly what I feel like.

Does anybody know if people are now missing the possibility to complete any achievements or so? Or getting a special item from any of the NPCs in the path that was replaced?

It only adds achievements, doesn’t remove any. He specifically said in the stream that as far as the dungeon master achievement and paths achievement, the new paths replaces the old one, meaning if you did the old one you’ll still have that achievement, and if you didn’t but do this one, you’ll get that achievement. There were no special items from the path being replaced, but there are in what’s being added.

as an ele i feel like we got the finger compared to every one else-.- once more, and we are properly the class who needed a real buff the most… bs

do this:

As an Ele, I feel the exact opposite. I’m super excited and happy about this. Perhaps it’s because I’m a staff ele, but this one /is/ focused on support stuff, right? Which is kinda what staff is meant to be better at than other weapons…

shrug I really really like my ele though, and for the hundreds and hundreds of hours playing him I’ve never felt under powered, not even in PvP.

Blacktide: We took him about 10%… Its impossible on this server. IMPOSSIBLE

If you got him to 10%, you’re really close!

You might have already done this, but if not — on the very last phase, after the 3rd laser defense, have EVERYONE except the people actually firing cannons at Tequatl run in and DPS like there’s no tomorrow. If you’re getting to the last phase, you’re really really close!
