64 bit beta today

ArenaColin
We are rolling out a beta version of a 64 bit client today if all goes well – please give this a shot if youre having crash issues and let us know if that does the trick!

As a non computer literate person, what does this mean to me?

64bit can use more memory than 32bit, this might resolve some of the gw2 crash issue. Yes, gw2 now using more memory than before. What happen to game optimization?!

Wat.

You do realize utilization is a core of optimization? If a program is only using half of the available resources and suffers because of it, its poorly optimized.

For anyone curious, the 64 bit client will have NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER. UNLESS you have more than 4 GB of memory. This is because with 32 bits, you end up with 4096 available memory addresses, whereas with 64 bits this is increased exponentially into the billions of GB range (meaning computer can use as much as it wants).

Where will this be good?

In any situation where the program hits that memory cap, meaning:

WvW zergs

Meta events

It should run better in more intensive areas in general.

So Colin, can we ever expect DX11? :P Would be nice to play the game running off an API that isn’t roughly 13 years old.

I dont wanna dx12 because...

I hope you don’t have a cell phone, use google, or have your computer connected to the internet. Because get this, windows 10 is hardly any less private than windows 8.1 or 7. The difference is its a lot more out in the open, and you can turn a lot of it off.

People are so paranoid about privacy. Here’s the thing. Microsoft REALLY doesn’t care what you do. Those notifications are there for legal reasons, and its generally so your programs can sync.

Its like people complaining about the facebook app requiring all of the contacts on your phone and the location of where you are at to work. If the program doesn’t have access to those resources how do you expect it to be as intuitive as people demand it to be?

Will the next Xpack go beyond DX9?

Judging from the earlier comments by many who’ve given us the technical explanations and other things we’ve read, it seems to me it’s realistic that the answer is going to be “No.”

It’s a real pity that HoT for consistency purposes is probably going to support only DX9.

The technical “explanations” in here are misleading at best. I’d say most of them have no clue what DX is, and what changes from 9-11/12.

First off, DirectX is a renderer. What does that mean? In a simplified explanation, its what is used to actually display the game. Contrary to what a majority of people think, the renderer is NOT the game’s code. Instead, it is tasked with utilizing the resources available to make what the code dictates appear on the screen.

Now, here is where we get into DirectX. Because hardware changes over the years, we’ve gotten new DirectX versions to better utilize the hardware available. DirectX 9 was single core based. It scales horribly past 2 cores, but this was okay because back then most CPUs were dual core. DirectX 11 is better suited for multicore CPUs, and its sweetspot is about 4 cores. DirectX 11 is very solid, and is considered the standard for gaming. Its rather efficient, but it does have the same issue where after a certain point it stops scaling with CPU cores.

Nowadays CPUs are going into the 8 core range. AMD has been in this territory for a while, and intel is stepping in as well with their 8 core CPUs using DDR4. While DX 11 is awesome, it still falls off sharply with those higher core CPUs. This wouldn’t be an issue if graphics cards weren’t insanely powerful. At this point 1080p gaming is easier than ever, and the high end cards are a complete waste unless you are going for 2k+ gaming, as at that point your games are CPU bound.

Now, back to Guild Wars. First off, no, it isn’t impossible to add DX11 without rewriting the entire game. To go against what another use said in this channel, they actually added in DX11, not 10. It was a pretty significant performance boost, and allowed an aging game to have much needed graphical improvements. There are other games as well that upgrade their renderer, as its silly not to.

Someone posted a graph that shows DirectX CPU distribution. Yes, the distribution is better. The way that chart would look with the DX9 that we are stuck with is worse however. It would be shoved on that first thread(which it is), and CPU performance would suffer horribly as the game would need to fight with DirectX in order to get any instructions in.

Its bad. Period. Guild Wars 2 is a beautiful game, but it runs horribly. An upgrade is absolutely possible, and really theres no reason not too. It lets your game scale. We’ve had DirectX9 for 10 years.

What they need to do is just add DirectX 11. DirectX12 isn’t support by every card, and its going to take a while for everyone to adopt windows 10 anyways. Its not a huge jump from DirectX 11 to 12 anyhow. I’ve heard of a few programmers knocking it out in a few months on their own.

I don’t mean to come off as condescending, but please don’t spread misinformation or come up with excuses for this. Its silly that we have to deal with crummy performance on such a beautiful game.

woah nice catch, i think he does a kick(warrior utility) at 0:25

i mean what classes atm can use sword pistol combo, just mesmer and theif, and neither of them have a stab like that.

Hopefully more people don’t ignore this footage lol

I know people wanted swords for mainhand.

But its important to look at it in perspective. Offhand weapons give access to two weapon skills. Elementalists have 4 attunements, meaning from an offhand weapon you get 8 new skills.

Compare that to 3 from a main hand for another prof or 5 for a 2 hander. Either way it doesn’t compare. I’m all for swords, was really hoping for them, but 12 new abilities for an ele is pretty insane.

I would agree if it were an MMO other than GW2.

Progression is not vertical so its hardly as dependent on new content rolling out.

I mean I love new things, but it really isn’t necessary. Everything is relevant at all times, so unless you’ve spent a crazy amount of time on the game, there are bound to be things to achieve.

And if not, you can always take a break. The joy of being free to play is that you can take a break without being punished.

I’d just like the expansion to have more of that content honestly.

So Disappointed After The First Beta

in Revenant

Posted by: Ryan.2758

Ryan.2758

Hello All,

I had high hopes after playing the Revenant at EGX Rezzed. After Playing the first beta, I am so disappointed.

I have tried a zerker and condi build with all weapon types. All I have seen is crazy low DPS, to the point where it took about 8 mins to kill a vet with other players.

That and no underwater weapon hardly make it much of a Beta.

From my perspective, I wish Arena net had not bothered with this weekend. I would have preferred them admitting that we are a long way away from hot completion.

After what I have seen today, I doubt very much that I will be playing a rev from day one, if even at all.

For what it is worth, I am seriously questioning whether I have a future in this game. (No you cannot have my stuff).

I guess that’s what you get for blind loyalty when the overlords have a culture of bleeding gamblers dry when you are a bit of a gambler yourself.

It is utterly dumbfounding how many people don’t understand the purpose of a beta test.

It isn’t to market a finished product. Its to find flaws and address them.

You know, “Hey devs, it looks like the revenant has a problem with damage output you may need to address” is a great way for a beta tester to report issues they discover.

Your response isn’t That of a beta tester. It’s that of someone looking for a bnigh complete product, which this isn’t.

I suggest you and others of your persuasion look up what a beta test and beta testers are. It certainly seems you either don’t get it, or don’t have it in you.

Do you honestly think that this is a true beta?

Its hardly a beta when at least half of the main functionality is missing. This is a publicity beta more than anything else.

Arena Net have software to test DPS and other elements of mobs and professions. This weekend is about letting people have a hands on experience and nothing else.

From my perspective I am disappointed. Please don’t try and insult my intelligence by trying to tell me I don’t know what a Beta is as I have working for a software house for over 10 years.

I am quite familiar with the software testing process. I am also quite familiar with how marketing works also.

I’m sorry but you clearly don’t know how betas work in regards to game development. Sorry, theres no need to get upset about it.

Damage is going to be low until we have the dps legends and the damage focused weapons. Not to mention the damage traits.

Again. Its beta. Expect the numbers to be off. It was the same case back for the original launch with some of the professions.

@Scoobaneic If newer mmo eat gw2 it will be cause of content, not performance. Gw2 needs raw power, and as time passes, newer hardware will come out with better IPC. With the upcoming of Skylake and Zen, it even make it harder to move to a newer api, which would take really long time.
Just to know, they started modifying gw1 engine in 2007 and it took 5 years till it became gw2 engine, and that’s modifying an existing game engine…

@Ravenmoon BF4 multiplayer is limited to 64 players, and there are fewer external things to process. In gw2, where it gets really messy is when +50vs+50 people engage.
There is a lot of stuff calculated by the cpu there (IA, players location, projectiles, range attack, AoE targeting, condition ticking, dps calculation, hard CC movements, pathing of transportation skills, dodges…). That’s easily several times the amount of data the cpu has to manage compared to bf4.
Things where the gpu does no job, and as a result, it doesn’t matter which api you use.
Just look at this video of how a gtx 660 can max the game with minimum of 45fps while recording:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1zWbnnjzOk

Also, the photos show how dx12 will work compared to dx11. Violet is game engine, and red/blue is graphic rendering. We can see that dx12 is really important when the game is very graphic demanding, which gw2 isn’t.
You cannot compare a AAA fps game, like BF4, performance with a mmo performance. BF4 has way more complex graphics than gw2, and that’s why mantle/dx12 improves so much the framerate.

Except you fail to realize the jump from Dx9 to just 11 would remedy the CPU bottleneck by using multiple threads.

The sole reason for that bottleneck is the under utilization of the CPU, which both Dx11 and 12 both improve DRAMATICALLY.

Dx12 would be an absolutely massive performance boost compared to Dx9, because it removes practically every bottleneck but GPU (which is extremely favorable) from the equation.

And saying that GW2 doesnt have the graphics for Dx12 to really matter is a moot point. When people are having low framerate in cities or with other players, a lighter CPU load would absolutely remedy this. Not to mention the more advanced graphics options that could be made available when there is less overhead.

That would bring about a huge inconsistency, since Rytlock and Logan reconciled in the Flame Citadel, strengthened their bond while firing friendly jabs at each other in the Crucible of Eternity, outright bromanced in Arah, then partied together at the victory celebration in Fort Trinity.

Just Season 1 — the godawful garbage it was — made a pathetic attempt at trying to align the Personal Story with its own horrors. In other words: at first ANet tried to make the two storylines run simultaneously in lore. That’s why Logan was in Divinity’s Reach at the Queen’s side (she sent him away at the end of Caudecus’ Mansion to resume his mission as her valorous champion and “dragon hunter”), and that’s why he was shaken when a hacked Watchknight assumed Rytlock’s illusion.

They ought to be best buddies now that ANet finally realized that the Living Story was happening after Zhaitan’s defeat.

They actually were friends at the time of the Queen’s Jubilee. Rytlock was supposed to be sent as the representative for the charr, but Rox was sent instead. As Rytlock said, he and Logan were on good terms, but he couldn’t stand to be around Logan when he is near Jenna.

Logan was upset with the illusion because it was similar to pouring salt into a wound that was finally healing. It reminded him of his greatest failure, and when it was supposed to be a simple demonstration of the watchknights, it wasn’t exactly “cool” with him.

You need to understand two things. First, she is obsessed with Scarlet beyond reason. This is the same Tiami who wanted to personally become Scarlets assistant, even despite the extreme danger that position would put her in. She was obsessed with Scarlet in any way, and Omadd’s machine was a direct piece of her history that made Scarlet who she was.

And secondly. The eternal alchemy is the biggest Asuran problem in existence. It is literally their entire purpose to decipher even a small part of its workings. Can you imagine having a machine with literally all the answers to your entire race’s biggest question right in front of you, and only the threat of madness to stop you?

Scarlet's Corruption or non? *Spoilers*

in Lore

Posted by: Ryan.2758

Ryan.2758

From what I’ve seen, Scarlet was in fact corrupted.

However, this does go against what we previously knew of the sylvari; that they were immune to corruption from elder dragons. The only way around this from what I can guess, is that the dream created by the pale tree IS a form of corruption, albeit mostly a benevolent one, and thus the sylvari already corrupt cannot be corrupted again.

In this way, when Scarlet went into Omadd’s machine, she was freeing herself of the dream, and also her protection from corruption. Once free of the Pale Tree’s dream, Mordremoth was able to step in and force his own will on Scarlet.

If my theory is true, it would seem that dragon corruption is much more a mental/magic condition than it is a physical one.

Spoiler Alert:

In the journals you complete in her workshop, scarlet mentions a dark presence that was following her before she went insane. Eventually the presence drove her to a point of a paranoia. It communicated with her with images of death and destruction, and she decided she must go and confront the presence, and put an end to the madness.

The big question now is whether this is the entity that Scarlet encountered in the dream, and if so, who is it?

My money is on the jungle dragon possibly. She talks about how she finally saw it, and how she stared in the void and the void stared back.

Kinda exciting.

Charr Roleplay Questions

Posted by: Ryan.2758

Ryan.2758

1. If you sleep in game, you do in fact “purr”.
2. Charr are pretty dexterous. Their claws are retractable (in game obviously there were limitations) and seeing as charr has a legion devoted to engineering, with some of those engineers being bomb makers, they are pretty dextrous.
3. From their pose, I would say so. Seems like they would otherwise have to be perfectly straight just to stand up at all.
4. Based on what Ember Doomforge states. Charr hearing and smell is not extremely acute.Their ears do in fact pick up different frequencies of sound. This is one theory as to why human speed annoys a lot of Charr.

That is everything I know from the books and every bit of charr lore I’ve picked up in game. Hope it helps.

As the title suggest I’m curious to a few things related to charr and role playing them properly.

Do charr purr if content? Maybe in their sleep, or during intimacy?

How dexterous are charr really? Those claws don’t look it, but that’s just the model I have to go on.

Are they similar to house cats/most felines that the tail is essential for balance?

How acute is their hearing with the two sets of ears? I read one set detects high sounds and the other low while human speech is in between, making it sorta garbled.

I’m an avid role player and I try to do my research before diving into role play but I feel as though my charr tidbits are sadly lacking to add flavor to them.

Hey, I beat Liadri yesterday on my engineer.

Some times for most of the fights.

Pistol/shield tends to be the best weapon combo, as rifle netshot is useless, and the same goes for glue shot.

Nothing beats the healing turret in any of the encounters, as the condition removal is just too essential for some fights.

I personally preferred running elixir S, thumper turret, and a kit depending on the situation. Elixir S is self explanatory. Thumper turret is actually very very useful. Not only does it provide a cripple and an aoe launch, it also draws extreme mob aggro. This allows you time to heal and damage without any threat of damage.

Now for some tips for Liadri. After a LOT of experimentation, the best weapon set and utilities are pistol/shield with healing turret, Elixir S, grenade kit, and tool kit.

Elixir S gives you a clutch way to avoid those “I’m about to get one shot” moments, and grenade kit is ESSENTIAL for the second stage. Tool kit provides not only another block, but also the ever useful magnet pull which can be used to save a lot of time on phase 1. The box of nails is also useful for kiting liadri in phase 2.

For traits, I specced deep into grenades, but put a lot of points into the last tree for the increased endurance regen. Spec for swiftness on kit switching and then go into the second for last tree for vigor on swiftness. This allows you not only to kite better, but also gives you nearly twice as many opportunities to dodge.

In phase 2, manage your healing turret to remove the 30+ second cripples, and switch between grenade kit and tool kit to manage damage and your block. I recommend smart casting, but I did it without. Also, my gear is mix of rampager’s and berserker’s.

Hope this helps someone.

Forgot to mention elite. Supply drop, kitten .

Also, for struggar. Just static shot as much as possible, and try to beat the dog to the meat. I believe cripple works, but I’m not sure. As usual, be ready to cleanse the cripple that the main guy applies to you, and once you get 4 or 5 meat stacks, burn him down and then switch to the dog. The dog has a highly telegraphed attack that will one shot you, but it is easily dodgeable, and if you have a thumper turret down it will go to that instead.

It looks like the symbols are being buffed to the range of traited symbols.

It also says, however, that the symbol will now actually be the size of the area it hits, whereas before you’d have the symbol and then an area all around it where it would still do damage.

Based on this wording, the spell itself got bigger, and the actual symbol on the ground got much bigger.

Not just buffs. Sword #4 (impale- rip) has been the weakest sword skill in the game. Very difficult to get the rip land against any moving opponent, clunky animation + glitched. Now instead of 4 bleed stacks it will apply 2 stacks of torment. That is more than 50% damage nerf in many cases. Granted 2 stacks of torment can act as a cover condition, but still…

For Impale, the wording on the skill seems to imply all the bleeding is changed into torment, AND there’s 2 additional stacks applied at once at impact instead of only those that happen over time.

Agreed. Also, the way torment works should mean that landing that second attack will be far easier. If they do try to move it’ll simply increase the damage the torment will do to them.

So while landing that second part will still be hard, we should be doing at least 60% more damage just from conditions if they were to me moving for the duration.

I am almost positive Primordus is underneath Divinty’s Reach.

Just go to the Great Collapse and talk to some of the npcs. They mention how the city was on solid rock, and that the kind of collapse in the city is normally characterized by something tunneling.

Now what is possibly big enough to tunnel a hole big enough to collapse an area the size of several football fields.

Also, if you look down, you can see some bridges etc., hinting that it could be possible later on that we explore it. And that is even touching on how cool of a plot twist it would be if humanity’s last bastion of hope were threatened by a resident elder dragon.

I don’t even know what people are dissapointed with in GW2. I play the game, I have fun, they drop a patch, I get free new content (speaking of which, the wintersday event is amazing by any MMO’s standards) and me and my friends still play it often.

My server is still alive and well (crystal desert) and I’ve only ever been on the actual Lions Arch at 3 A.M. after waiting 5 minutes. I do events with people, and have formed groups just to roam around in level 40 areas just completing events.

Perhaps your views are just flawed in what you are looking for, or maybe you are simply trying to not like the game. Regardless, not everyone will like a game. Developers have the frustrating task of creating a game for a community that wants it to be on their wishes as an individual, however, the product they push is inevitably going to have to be used by all the players regardless of what they expect. Frankly OP, you don’t have any evidence of a bad game, apparently you don’t even have your own opinion as your friends are your only witnesses.

Also, I don’t understand the point of this thread, are you trying to make a point?

Weapon swapping?

We are like elementalists in that we cant switch weapons mainly because we can both swap weapons at will.

But now you’re thinking, “but wait, they get 4 total attunements when we need to slot our kits”.

Yes, but heres why we actually get the better end of the bargain.

1. We also get a utility skill with the kit itself.
2. Our kits have more variety than the elementalist attunements.
3. We don’t have any cooldown to switch between our kits. We can use a flamethrower, switch back to a rifle for a net shot, then instantly switch back to roasting. Elementalists incur a 20 second CD when switching out of an attunement.

Our Time is Now Trailer. My thoughts.

I love guild wars, i really do. However, this trailer was horrible. It was obscure, too selective in its audience, and was a disjointed mess or random snippets.

Hell, i didnt even realize i was watching the video until 30 sec into it because i thought it was a commercial. It fails to answer the “why should i play” question that all game trailers strive to entice you with.
