Eh, burst is too strong in this game too. People have just finally discovered that DD ele can burst too. I say nerf burst in general, not just the DD ele. A GC ele will have the lowest HP and lowest armor in the game though at least.
Imo, the only class I’ve seen that’s really vocal about DD Ele OPness are thieves. lol.
There is no good reason to fight with smaller AoEs. The only mild argument for it would be that increasing meteor storm radius is bad because the meteors hit less often but even then…
Get it. It’s a MUST. Best trait ever for staff ele. The increase heal radius is very very nice. Allows more room for you to run inside it and get the passive heal from it.
It takes just a little more practice to get your enemies stay within normal lavafonts area, and when you can do that blasting staff is just a waste of a trait.
Drop it and you can get final shielding, arcane retribution, renewing energy, arcane mastery or arcane energy. All of those far superior IF you don´t need the blasting staff to hit stuff.
Because little practice can make this trait redundant it´s overrated and waste of a trait in the end. Just my 2 cents.
Sure, you can still hit enemies without blasting staff but it’s harder and it’s also easier for enemies to run out of it. Blasting staff is superb in pvp and wvw. Sure, in pve, you can get away without using it but not in pvp and wvw. It’s just… strange not to use it. Why would you not want to hit more easily? Give heals more easily? To combo more easily? To have it harder for your enemies to escape from your AoEs? For longer lasting chill? To force people to sit in your AoEs because they encompass the entire cap points in pvp? Without blasting trait, you’d have none of this. It is very useful to have your AoEs take up the entire cap point in pvp. People will sit in it and take a lot of damage because they dont want to leave the cap point.
Hm, then being the king of versatility, it seems then a balance of both condition damage and power might be best. Really useful info though daphoenix. Thanks! I think I’m gonna go carrion armor with sapphire jewelry. Really nice mix of stats. No precision, but I don’t think that’s needed as an Ele unless you’re going glass.
How can you not get blasting staff as a staff ele? That’s just… blasphemy. The increased AoE is invaluable. It’s SOO much easier to aim and actually hit stuff, especially in 1v1. Seriously. I hate how mandatory this trait is for staff eles in fact. I don’t think any trait should be mandatory but for staff eles, imo, this trait is a must.

Is it worth it to get condition damage over power? Fire and earth have a lot of bleeds and burns and I feel like it might be worth it. I’m not sure if it’s better to get PVT armor, power toughness and healing power armor, or condition vit tough armor.
sPVP is good for waiting for tPVP queues or just wanting to kill some nubs. I don’t see why you guys complain. tPVP and sPVP suffer from the same thing: lack of matchmaking resulting in bad matchups that end in landslide wins. Those are boring.
There’s a lot of zerging yeah, but it’s not that bad. I roam all the time on my DD ele and get into duels or 1v2s. Or just join the zerg and get glory. There’s a lot of glasscannons compared to bunkers, especially thieves and mes, but learn to deal with it.
And I agree with Recently. The average pvper >> average wvw player.
Does Chill really make such a huge difference to an initiative based class other then putting their utility and heal on longer cooldowns and slowing their movemnt? That being said I absolutely love water 3, makes my heart sad when I watch Ele videos and the skill seldomly gets used.
I believe chilled does the following: Increase CDs. Slows movement. Decreases the amount of travel distance on dodges and leap attacks. Slows initiative gain (not sure, will have to be verified by a thief)? Overall, a great condition to use on thieves. Especially one with a 15s CD with 3s chill duration and combined with frost aura which chills for 2s.
Aswell as Cleaning Water Trait combined with Soothing disruption in the water magic line cantrips will remove one condition each
Ah, I’d forgot about that. Let me add that in.
1) remove downed state
2) buff HP across the board by 30%
3) fixed.I’d be willing to bet sPVP without downed state would be far more popular than current game type.
That sounds like the best thing since sliced bread.
I’m trying to compile a list of condition removals available to each class and figured it’d be easier to ask the forums. Let’s start the list, shall we? If you guys don’t mind. I’m trying to see if condition damage is a worthwhile investment compared to power. I’ve been varying between clerics and shaman amulets lately in pvp. This list would help.
1. Elementalist (has a lot of condition removal). Every 9 seconds on switch to water attunement is an automatic removal of 2 conditions. Can cure 3 more conditions with the spells available in the water attunement.
We also have the signet that cures a condi every 10 seconds. There’s also ether renewal which removes all your conditions (pretty much) every 15 seconds. Heal skills that offer regen also remove 1 condition.
Further more, if traited for vigor and regen granted with cantrip along wth condition removal granted for any regen granted, then eles get another condi removal from each cantrip used. Cantrips vary between 50s to 75s CD. Armor of Earth being 90s but also granting stability and protection.
There is also the cantrip, cleansing fire also removes 3 conditions every 50 seconds.

How to deal with thieves:
1. Stay in air attunement and use static aura. Press about face, use air 5. Then fire 3, 2, 5, 4. Then earth 3, 2, 4. Then water 3, 2. If he’s not dead, switch to fire. This is what happens in your best scenario imo. Doesn’t always but at least it gets the thief off your back and allows you to heal up in water attunement.
2. Mist form or arcane shield or other cantrips if you have to but I find those 2 work best
3. Dodge (requires good reflexes)
4. Using Frost Aura and dodging away works too as it applies a chill to the thief but you’ll end up taking up decent damage. Static aura works better and you should only use frost aura if static is on CD. I love water 3 against thieves. Low CD too.
5. Yeah. I think that’s it. Sadly. Thieves are a pain though. It’s worse when you’re fighting and they pick you off while you’re unaware or stunned without a cantrip to blow. Thieves suck. Meh. Hate thieves and mesmers.
@Splody
You’ve been playing against bad thieves or you have god-like reflexes and can dodge a thief’s burst with amazing skill. Prob the former. A thief can burst you down in 2 seconds.
What builds does everyone run and what gear have you chosen to supplement it? I assume most DD Eles are bunkers and use PVT armor and PVT jewelry. Are these the optimal stats to get? Is it viable to stack power toughness and healing power instead of PVT? Or is have that not viable due to low health pool? Has anyone tried stacking condi damage with power? Or going condi over power?
I’m thinking of getting carrion armor for condi damage, vit, and toughness and getting sapphire jewelry for power, toughness, and healing power. Pretty much hitting all stats.
Or perhaps get toughness, healing power, power armor in conjunction with sapphire jewelry for as much toughness and healing power I could get. Viable?
Yeah. I’m on the fence myself. Power vit toughness? Or power healing toughness?
Thanks a lot grimm (and everyone else). I’m gonna farm AC though. I can’t seem to buy PVT armor from trading post so buying gems isn’t gonna work. Seems like the easiest way to get PVT armor+weapons is from farming AC. Sigh. Farming. I live in abig city. Why do I want to farm…
(edited by SecondtoNone.7549)
or skip all that grind boring stuff and save your precious time and spend 20-40 $ to by gems and equip yourself with all you want. or pay 10$ and play the trading post for some days.
buying equip with rl money is not evil. and ask yourself: do you want to do stuff you hate for hours(days…weeks…) when you coud skip that with 1-2h of rl work?
How much gold do I end up getting and what oor where should I spend it? Tp? You bringup a good point.
Since the elementalist is a master of the elements and can manipulate it at will, I want to be able to rip the air from someone’s lungs. I want to be able to squeeze all the water out of a human body, streaming it out of all its pores and leave it a dry dead husk. Or ride that air scooter that ang rides on in the last airbender. They should change ride the lightning to ride the air scooter.
But on a slightly more serious note, I want to be able to ride my elementals. Especially the fire elemental. Actually, just stick me on the air elemental and that’d almost be like riding an air scooter.
Cool idea. I like it. The music though…
Ok. Got my game plan down. Do AC Explore. Join a WvW guild and work in a party raiding supply camps and killing dolyaks. Use DD for traveling. Switch to staff for tower/keeps and zergs (?). Always carry supply to use for siege building and repairing walls. I’m not sure if I should get PVT armor or focus on toughness and healing. In PVP, I use clerics amulet for healing and toughness and I’m ok with running with 14k ish hp. I hardly die, but is that not a good idea in WvW? Should I get PVT? Or is power toughness healing power ok? As for jewelry, do I buy that from TP or craft or is there a merchant for it?
Agreed. But at least you can tell the difference between the nubs and the ones who’ve been playing ele for a long time. Duels against good eles take a longg time. Duels against bad eles go pretty quickly.
Well, my guild is dying since it’s mostly made up of rl members and they’ve stopped playing due to boredom—but a few did wvwvw while they were playing. I just didn’t. I PVPed with a few other members. And I hated PVE the more I played it. It was the same cycle of horrible quests over and over and over and ugh, the kittenty storyline from the main quest—god it sucked. Who writes for all these mmo games? So mindnumbingly boring.
I’ve never been a fan of grind. I play games to have fun so I never understood the mmo concept of grind. I actually usually play online action games (dragon nest, s4 league, rakion, vindictus, gunz). I’m new to the WoW like combat of GW2 and find it fun in its own way in PVP thanks to the elementalist. But the PVE is so boring. So so boring. Zzz.
But it seems like in general, everyone seems to agree that AC is the best route; so, I guess I’ll prob do AC runs. Thanks. Wish PVP gave PVE stuff just so I could wvwvw. Sigh.
I just started WvWvW yesterday and spent all my money leveling my cooking just to get to 80. Hence, no money. And my guild doesn’t WvWvW. I spent a lot of time in WvWvW walking around (and so much walking it was) trying to figure out what to do. I learned that you’re supposed to head to the places marked on the map as battles and to defend keeps and kitten.
Anyone happen to have a good guide on WvWvW for eles? The only guide I see is vids of daphoenix owning poor suckers 5 at a time.
But basically, I should either go do dungeons or run with a guild that does WvWvW? And which dungeon should I run? And how do I buy this armor after doing dungeon runs? … Yeah, don’t know much about PvE stuff. I find it boring as kitten.
So, I PVP all the time because I prefer killing people rather than NPCs (that’s why I like online games. If I wanted to kill NPCs, I’d play a single player game like dishonored). I’ve been doing WvWvW lately but I’m severely under-geared because I find the PVE in this game monotonous and redundant and refrain from doing it unless necessary. I just recently leveled to 80 just so I could be more competitive but I have no money and bad gear. My crafting is low because I find that boring too.
Can I WvWvW enough that I’ll finally be able to afford good gear? Or do I have to suck it up and play PVE (or perhaps just go back to PVP)? While I’m undergeared, should I use staff? I’ve been trying to roll mainly with DD and only switching to staff when I have to, but I’m a lot weaker than what I’m used to from PVPing. It seems like I might be better off rocking staff and hanging in the background.
I think I’m wearing lvl 60 gear? I have like 30 silver. Can’t afford anything.
It’s a discussion, sir. Not an argument. I’m not sure why you keep trying to turn it into one. Relax.
To be honest, I’m not sure why you think I’m arguing rather than discussing, but I’ll apologize nonetheless for the confusion.
The main reason I made the post because I don’t understand why you were suddenly convinced when someone repeated the same argument for the umpteenth time.
Also, I meant to add another example situation to the table through the Ride the Lightning issue. It shows what happens when elementalists are given acces to more skills during combat, and as such could be seen as an example why weapon swapping in combat shouldn’t be added.
But I meant no personal disrespect to you.
That’s because I do know it’s op. That’s why my suggestions all involve ways to limit it so it wouldn’t be. I like the idea of weapon swap and would like theory craft whether I’d be possible to implement in a toned down version for the ele. People just kind of ignored my long second post where I make points and asked questions and instead went on to yell in caps and in strings of exclamation points of how op it is.
Having 40 different abilities to respond to a situation is so far above and beyond what anyone else is capable it should be obvious without having to sit here listing the dozens of specific combinations I can use to kill someone. When you have 40 different abilities to choose from you don’t blindly apply a combo. You just decimate.
When you can DO everything, always, whenever, you can’t be anything BUT overpowered.
Good response.
Indeed a good response. It’s also pretty much the same answer everyone else has given you.
Look at the Ride the Lightning issue that got fixed today. The net result of that is virtually the same as adding a second weapon set to the ele: more acces to more skills. Now, you could argue that it was due to specific skills you could acces, but other weapons have skills like that as well.
Ride the Lightning was quickly found as overpowered, and Anet responded almost as quickly by applying a hotfix. The elementalist got a taste of what it would be like to have acces to twice the amount of skills. And it was shown to be too powerful.
Convinced now?
It’s a discussion, sir. Not an argument. I’m not sure why you keep trying to turn it into one. Relax.
You are purposefully missing the point now.
I agree, but you also bring up an interesting point.
Now, what would happen if the ele had the response to everything? What if all classes had a response to everything? Would this make it a boring game because we have all the answers? No, I don’t think so. The hard part then would be finding the right answer for the right question asked during the right situation and would make the game much more strategic and challenging… But a kitten to balance.
Of course, this (and the thread) is pure theorycraft and being discussed out of curiosity and in the pursuit of knowledge–the forever tantalizing question, “What if?”
(edited by SecondtoNone.7549)
I never played guild wars 1 but ok, I’ll take your word for it.
I have the sense that the attitudes of and towards elementalists have changed to a remarkable degree and are now very positive. I think this is because more players have learned to play the class well. At the very least, most players understand that if they are not getting the results they expect, that lies with their ability to play the profession and not the profession itself. A well played elementalist is welcomed in every part of the game so I guess it is no wonder.
Maybe because everyone switched to DD ele?
It’s strange that people have been spouting off a lot of rage about how OP it would be without providing logical back up, especially when a number of suggestions have been listed to mitigate abuse of certain weapon swap strings. I like my idea of, well, for example: You use water 5 for a heal in staff and then switch to DD for water 5, but you can’t, because water 5, even in DD, is on CD.
I never knew the glory days of the elementalist. In Guild Wars 1, I joined just before Factions was released (very early on for those who don’t know) and played monk for a long time, believing my calling was to be a healer. I decided to try something new and played an minion master necromancer and I thought for sure this was my true calling for over a year.
Then, I discovered the elementalist and I was enthralled beyond words. The power I felt commanding the elements, the ability to destroy all who would do this world harm was euphoria such as I had not known in all my days.
But then I heard words, terrible, nasty words. Vile words spoken in tones only the broken can utter.
I heard tales of days since passed, days when the might of our fires were loved and feared by all.
Days when we elementalists knew true glory. But this was absurd! I KNEW the power I had, I could not fathom that this bore the abhorrent title of under-powered.
As time passed I learned things, terrible nasty things. Vile things only the truth can teach.
I learned that I lacked the power I thought I had, that the time of Elemental Glory had been and gone.
I shattered. I could not go back. Not after drinking from the flask of pleasure I had tasted when first the earth shook at my command, when the skies first thundered at my voice, when fires first would still themselves before me, when the harshest falls and fastest streams first gently held my feet aloft upon its surface.
I knew what I must do.
I knew as the moon knew to reflect the sun in the dead of night.
I must persevere. I must stand my ground upon the earth as the tidal wave known as weakness washed over me. I would bear it with the grace of the wind or else let its fires consume me.
To this day I remain as ice, firmly frozen in place with the earth crushing around me. The air itself tries to suffocate my devotion, but with the strength of the flame I will not die.
I will instead stay true to my cause and wait patiently for the time when glory will return to us. In due time we will awaken from our dreams and hear the clamor of war! Gods and spirits alike will know our might when the very fundamental formulae of the world bow in honor and respect to us!
You know, I was feeling very depressed this morning before writing this. Now I feel quite alright.
Through chance and fate, I stumbled into this post and was astounded by its beauty and knew then, that I had to do it right. I had to bestow upon it the honor it deserved, by eternal right. I gave it its own topic.

I am simply trying to initiate a nice civil discussion. If you are incapable of acting with proper decorum, please simply leave. Before posting, please remember the keyword when posting in a forums: respect.
The clear solution to the dilemma is to give them the same weapon swap everyone else has but either disable it or have it on a much longer cooldown during combat.
Or this suggestion I made in my second post:
3. What if even though we can weapon swap, our attunements shared the same cooldowns on both weapons? So if you’ve used your bursts on SD, when you switch to DD, those similar skills will also be on CD? Now, you can no longer abuse fire attunement in SD and DD together. You can’t abuse staff heal with DD/SD heal.
I think I’ll post it in the first post so people will actually see it and not overlook my way too long post.
you should start one anyway

I guess my second post is pretty long but this is the main suggestion I thought was interesting. I just like the idea of having even more spells to play with as that’s why I started the ele in the first place. It’s complex and challenging and hell, I think it’d be cool if it was more so. Just me, of course. This suggestion tries to give the best of both worlds without making it OP. Shared CD between skills from either weapons.
I’d like weapon swap because I think it’d make the class more fun—and that’s all that matters. I’m just wondering what could be done to make it less OP if weapon swap was available.
I’m sure I’m not the only ele standing in pvp with DD and wishing I had a long-range weapon when someone’s standing on the clocktower shooting away at me and I can’t do anything because I want to cap the point.
I was hoping people would read my second post and start a good discussion, but perhaps a bump would help. But please, think, ponder, and consider the various options and sides of the argument.
Just about everything was already said on this topic, so no real reason to continue to milk this thread.
I thought my ideas were interesting but I suppose not. Ah, well.
I was hoping people would read my second post and start a good discussion, but perhaps a bump would help. But please, think, ponder, and consider the various options and sides of the argument.
Okay, first off, I love the Staff and I know right now it’s state is god awful. But is it still useful as Support? I know it’s not AS powerful as Guardian, but is it still viable for lets say a five man running supply camps? I just really like all the control and support heals that goes with it, and I do not like playing the Guardian class (or Engineer for that matter)
Staff is still very much useful for support and for 5man supply camp capping, just not AS useful as it used to be. Just try to avoid 1v1’s and 2v2 style skirmishes and you should be fine. Also, keep daggers in your inventory in case you need to switch on occasion.
Also, do you think it will get any love in the future? Cause I don’t mind struggling with it now and figuring it out if it’s gonna get some nice new changes in the future.
I think the Ele community hopes so. They nerfed it’s bunkering capability hard with the EA nerf (probably rightfully so), but it got no offensive or damage boosts to compensate. Hopefully these might be forthcoming (word on the street is that they’re talking about buffing the flight speed of ranger arrows to make them harder to dodge, I would think the same could be said for ALL the staff auto-attacks, so I would hope to see this).
What changes would you like to see?
And do any of you have some really nice support specs going on?I listed some wishful changes above, and as far as specs go the standard 0/10/0/30/30 spec (or 0/0/10/30/30) is still VERY good for bunkering and support. Damage is pretty poor, but I’m not an expert on offensive staff builds (so I’ll leave those responses to others).
Sorry if my questions seemed annoying. I am only just now starting to play Ele ><
No annoyance at all, we’re glad to help. Best of luck with the Ele class, I think you’ll find it the most entertaining and exhilarating class out there (I know I do, I can barely stand to level my alts, they’re so boring in comparison).
I’ve played defensive and offensive staff ele. If you want to go offensive, theres really no inbetween. Go all glass or go all defense. GW2 doesnt allow for being in the middle ground. Going glass is fun though. You can dish out massive AoE damage. It’s crazy. I play DD ele now but I got much more kills (prob assist kills but.. you know) with staff ele. Condition is also viable and works well because you spec into water and earth and both provide excellent protection while earth helps with condition damage.
So, pick one: go yo-yo ele and bunker it up, go all glass, or play the war of attrition with condition damage.
Most ele builds already have 2 + stuns or knockdowns…add in weapon swapping and you’re talking about ele’s with 3-4+ stuns/knockdowns in their builds >.> ya that wont be OP one bit…well at least if they added that people would stop complaining about thieves lol
Please read my second post to be fully informed about my proposition and criticisms about weapon swap.
weapon swap on an ele juggling 4 attunements would be incredibly overpowered.
The complexity would one-hit-crit-kill pretty much every ELEMENTALIST.
juggling 40 abilities and 5 f-keys would be murder… i’d have to replace my gaming mouse and would probably spend 75% of my time cursing under my breath because i missed the earth attunement and swapped weapons.
Yea because you would be juggling the 40 skills at the same time… Think before posting.
~.~ the love is strong in this one….
I hate unfounded critisism… So far you were agaisnt 3 different changes to elemtalist based on nothing. If i allow this to get unnoticed it will hurt the class. Bring valid points and ill take them, but dont come here saying weapong swap would be stupid because now you would need 20 more keybinds to handle the second weapon skills… come on man
It’s just how you phrased this. I’m trying to approach this with critical thinking and trying to tackle this from different sides. OP? Or not OP? That is the question.
Responding with an emotional reaction is fine, just be wary that when responding with emotions, others will respond likewise. Why? Because emotional reactions usually result in emotional responses in others. It helps to respond with both emotion and a clear line of logic. The logic will help others understand where you’re coming from and understand why you feel this way about the subject.
Imo, combo fields with blast finishers aren’t much of a problem with staff into dd. DD only has 2 blast finishers (though imo, churning earth takes too long to use as a blast finisher) so there’s only 1. And the leap from magnetic grasp.
The only way to combo a lot is using Staff and then SD. You can use a eruption > combo field > dragon’s tooth > pheonix > arcane wave > EA roll. That’s 5 blast finishers but that only makes us on par with PRE-NERF EA.
Did pre-nerf EA make us OP? No, not exactly. It was our heals that made us OP on staff. But that’s a bunker problem that imo, Anet should address separately. So, I believe that combos aren’t that bad of a problem. You’re cycling through a LOT of your spells to combo
The next OP thing would be ou heals. Staff heals used with DD/SD heals would definitely be OP. If weapon swap was available, this is the first thing devs should touch.
The next OP thing would be our burst strings. We would be able do staff to dd/sd strings. eruption > lava font > DD/SD burst. Or SD into DD burst. But imo, these strings would take a long time to use, even longer than Hundred Blades. And the first phase of the SD or Staff burst can be dealt with with a simple dodge. Don’t sit in the lava font or dragon’s tooth. Also, obsidion earth into churning earth isn’t OP at all. Churning earth is super easy to dodge. I don’t care if you have lightning flash. Just time your dodge roll and you’ll avoid it no matter what. Give players time and imo, churning earth will no longer work in PVP or WvWvW once players get used to playing against DD ele. It’s like learning to avoid bullrushes and HB.
The next OP thing could possibly be our escapes in conjunction with mobility. Using RTL to get away with lightning flash is awesome. Then mistform. Now, combine that with AoE Frost and AoE stun and cripple from staff and no one can ever catch up to you. Ever. Eles would also have perm swiftness. The ele would be like the little gingerbread man. “Can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread Ele.”
1. Now, how much of the OPness would mitigated with a long CD on weapon swap?’
2. If necessary, what if we used fishbait’s idea? Weapon 1 must be staff. Weapon set 1 can be SD, DD, SF, or DF. Therefore, long string bursts are no longer possible as staff is not really capable of burst damage. The only thing left to worry about is healing OPness.
I dont see that many dd eles and I pvp a lot. What are you (few) guys talking about?
Ya. He’s just a troll. Cmon. He’s using elementalists runes and uses a shaman amulet for a bunker build.
What do you guys think? Heals? Boons? DPS? CC? Mobility? Escapes? What combos would be OP?
My suggestion that I made in my second post I wanted to highlight:

Sounds like bs. Troll. Every class strugles against that many people. Even guards.
Yes but you cant ahieve more than 33%. Thats one staff air 4. Or dd aura w zephyrs boons
Yeah. Exactly, 1v1 is hard even when you build for it. I consider myself a good staff ele but 1v1s are still quite hard, even if you’re fighting against a glasscannon—or even a noob who spams 1 skill over and over. The only easy kills I have are other staff eles (who aren’t bunker).
I have to lol at this nonsense. I am an average player and I can 1v2 in full healing spec

I don’t bunker. You can’t kill any good players in bunker. And quit lying about 1v2ing anyone with staff ele. Please. If you mean by 1v2ing, all you’re doing is healing and holding the cap point until your mates arrive to help you. That’s not a 1v2. That’s just you being a bunker holding a cap point. Yeah, good for tPVP, but like I said many times before, sPVP, on the other hand, is all about the kills. Not winning the game.
i can successfully 1v2, and almost successfully 1v3
0k. Sure.

condition staff elementalist?
but you only have one reliable damage condition move, and it lasts for half as long as its cooldown
It works. I do 20 earth, 30 water, 20 arcane. Or switch earth and water if you want. You’re very tough due to the high vit and toughness. And just get carrion ammy + condi runes. Good survavibility with option for condi damage. Don’t rely on eruption. Use all your attunements.
Staff sucks at 1v1. If you want to 1v1, DD ele is the best weapon choice.
Bunker is good. Glass Cannon is good if you’re ballsy. Condition is good if you also spec for healing. Hardest class to play though with hardest weapon choice.
