and btw, there are people who still use the 0/10/0/30/30. it’s not a ‘dead’ build, people are just exploring other builds and how viable they are. i have my own version for my staff ele for group support.

Empower may be easier but it lasts for 10 seconds whilst Ele rotation lasts for 20s and I believe that is increased by boon duration.

And that doesn’t even answer my question.

ok then,

yes, might stacking is considered into a build, just like any other build on any other profession. but bear in mind that you’re running an obvious rotation that can easily be cancelled at any point, using your attack skills more for stacking might than attacking your enemy (because nobody is stupid enough to stand under dragon’s tooth AND wait for you to hit them with EA AND earthquake).

a single interrupt will stop you from might stacking, your main source of damage since you’re almost always built for survival and almost guaranteed to have a minimum of 30 points between water and arcane. even if you specced more for glass cannon, your attacks are so obvious that even if you didn’t die in a few seconds your target can waltz out of range before it hits them

on the other hand, a skill like empower can be thrown before you make contact or can be used without interruption with only 2 seconds of stability required. remember this is 12 stacks of might in 2 seconds and healing your party on a 20 second CD, with a shout on 30 seconds that stun breaks and gives stability if required. an ele has to go through a rotation in order to gain the same thing, putting skills on 6/15/20/10/45 seconds CD for the respective skills. your ele needs stability? 90 second CD. want to spec for the stability trait? do even lower damage.

the aggressive play style of the ele would be justified if it was high risk high reward, and it sort of is when you run glass cannon. but the reward is the same as other classes and you die a lot faster than anyone else.

you can feel proud of yourself knowing that you need to have so much more skill to do the same as others, but that’s like cutting your own legs off and trying to live a regular life, while shouting at others “get on my level”

Never understood this. It’s been simple and will continue to be simple. If you don’t like your Elementalist you have three choices:

1. Reroll to a different class. Be sure to pick something that interests you such as either fun game play or being overpowered. We all know Warrior/Guardian/Mesmer are solid in just about every capacity.

2. If you don’t want to reroll your other option is to quit or take a break for a while. I understand getting attached to a character and when it isn’t working out for you and you don’t want to invest yourself again this is the best route.

3. Shut up and deal with it. Lamenting forever or creating endless forum topics on the doom and gloom of your daily misery accomplishes nothing. You’ve chosen to stick with it and just deal with the way things are there’s really no sense in crying about it when you know the alternatives. The sheer volume of your tears on topics like Ride the Lightning have literally became an joke they publicly mock (such as with the Sanctum Fire move description).

Devs are going to do what devs are going to do and it’s pretty obvious our input into the matter is read, never acknowledged and summarily ignored.

i chose option 2.

considering the last time i logged in, my entire guild left the game, i switched to another server to play with my brother, who then left the game, i don’t have much of a reason to return.

when the commander shouts for static field, you’re 1 of 2 staff eles nearby to throw down the field. everyone blasts and rolls on.

every single guardian has a staff for swiftness, enough for everyone to keep up, making the stacking for static useless.

about to engage enemy zerg, your hard cc is on cd.

Erm until recently we have been nerfed ALOT. Sure might not be to the same extent but lets face it BETA and just after Ele WAS the strongest class. Unfortunately this is Anet and they do what they are known for – Making a mess of things and decided to over nerf them week after week.

But but hey, spirit rangers and necroes used to be OP in PRE-beta and they were only just brought back recently. Maybe eles will be OP again soon. Fingers-crossed.

We can only hope.

Has Anet ever responded to why the Elementalist has a lower starting health pool than a thief, when a thief has more movement, dps, and escape? If they say because Ele’s have good healing, I’d prefer to have a higher health pool and nerf the heals.

Prior to the nerfs to heals & mist & heal nerf, they said on SotG that ele heals were too strong, that they could heal from almost zero to full in 8-10 seconds.
I said in chat that we can heal well over 8-10 seconds, but a thief can kill us in 1-2 seconds.

Most in chat agreed, devs & ones reading chat for them ignored it & rushed onto the next subject.
Don`t ever expect a decent reply from a dev, most of us have learnt that…

amazing how they forget that having a smaller health pool would obviously get filled up quicker

I like her…a lot actually. Her character fits well into the writers style of overly campy and expositional dialogue. That sounds like a dig, but it isn’t. I think the writing style has struggled in this game since day one, the writers built square characters and tried to write them into round holes and it almost always fell flat. Here they have made a character they know how to write, and hopefully are finding their footing.

you didn’t read any of the GW2 books i take it. the characters in there were pretty fleshed out in comparison to this saturday morning, generic bad guy.

As everybody here is playing necro now, I feel like this is the right place to ask for this.

Well if the goal of your necro build is to kill ele’s, you really don’t have to bother spec’ing traits. They just drop.

Your doing something wrong if you can’t take on a Necro

You must be fighting condition necros.

There’s another kind?

That explains a lot about your posts right there. Without even fully stacking might a power necro can hit you for 4-7k with auto attacks. With real attacks it gets even worse and there are multiple combos you have to burn a cooldown to avoid. So your 12k hitpoint ele can talk the talk, but not much more than that when two auto attacks can flatten you.

It does, its says … “I don’t play WvW at all”, which is true. Meanwhile in sPvP power necros can’t stack that much damage so they don’t exist.

Edit:
That would be a nice 4-7k they would be hitting themselves with, say goodbye to your Death Shroud. Or a nice 2-4k with my protection, but again, I don’t play wvw.

about 12 players fighting Champion Ketsurak in Lawen Ponds. i’m the only ele (staff) and i’m the only one at range. everyone else was at melee

i was the only one the champion ran after and ultimately died.

i thought maybe i was doing too much damage (which should be impossible since was running buff/support, yes i’m too lazy to swap specs), so i respawn and watch a guardian being chased by it. i throw out Fireball (nothing else but the #1 fire auto attack) and the champion runs directly to me again, ignoring ~5 GS warriors hitting it at full force

later on i just watched everyone else fight it with 3 longbow rangers and a guardian with sceptre/focus jumping in later

Edit: now that i think about it, i might have ended up as the anchor during the fight, not sure how much defence everyone else had.

There are no smoke fields in the game that do damage for any class.

Or you’re suggesting that Anet completely change what fire fields do so that they now cause damage instead of blinding? Or you’re suggesting that fire fields now grant smoke instead of burning people, giving fire auras and granting might? Or you’re suggesting that fire fields burn people and have smoke so that they also blind people if you leap through them you get stealth.

or just have a field that only makes projectiles that pass through miss and isn’t a combo finisher (which would suit the defensive style of focus, although it would be exactly the same as swirling winds)
or just have a better skill for focus #4 on fire that could be anything other than a single fire aura on 40s cooldown

Next you will be asking for earth skills to create mud fields in water.

actually i think the concept of Murky Water was meant to be some kind of mud field, or at least dirt being kicked up in the water to create a field that nobody can see in. since smoke fields already exist and suit the description of a field in which nobody can see in, they made the skill a smoke field. and Anet aren’t going to make a special field for one skill on one class

There is a thread running around I saw here asking for changes to skills that would give elementalist stealth through combo finishers o.O.

that was probably my comment. i meant it as a field that makes enemy projectiles miss and not as a combo finisher, as opposed to a fire aura with a 40s cooldown

no i wasn’t thinking it through.

Edit: now that i think about it, we already have a smoke field we can stealth into… it’s on the trident…

why can every body comphrend that every specialiced build in X thing lacks a lot in x, x, x and x thing??? necros are the only class that can t scape reliabli from a fight necros is not a class that evades damage its a classs that stays and the the butt kicked if a necro is killing you …. shame… you got scape options (mesmers, guardians, … every class can scape from a necro)…

because in an MMO that says damage is not the only important thing in the game, all balances are measured by damage… and sPvP

ether renewal + rock solid = at least 4 unique conditions gone

or put 30 to water magic for cleansing water
regen on anything = condition removal
since you’re a staff ele you can throw down healing rain for more regen

wow, i thought this was a joke thread, but everyone seems to be taking it seriously.
i guess i can play along.

slightly better than an ele that’s not built mobility.

actually the d/d weapon set is made for mobility, you must be confusing it with staff or sceptre or */focus. you know, the weapons not made for mobility

shrug off all my damage and heal it all back using their weapon and utility skills.

we have heals on our utilities? but i thought Vigorous Shouts was only for warriors… you must be talking about the cookie cutter cantrip bunker build that was made to survive and do mediocre damage

it must feel bad to spec for heals on utilities and use a warhorn for condition removal when your opponent has specced for heals and drawing out the battle as long as possible

oh, and adrenal health with 2 bars of adrenaline does about the same amount of healing as soothing mist. how each scales with healing power may be different though

I dont have a magical mistform utility button to equip.

endure pain and defy pain don’t count do they…

As a warrior, you have 1 heal button, #6. That’s it. You take damage while that’s on cooldown… tough luck. So if things get hairy, I fall back. Get out of combat, let my health quick-regen, and then re-engage at my discretion.

i would have thought that the additional 291 toughness from armour and 7567 more health would have helped…

edit: i also forgot to mention the ‘convert 5% of toughness to power’ and ‘convert 5% of power to vitality’ option available, but i guess you dont want to be forced into speccing for that. that’s cool.

And when we go down, that’s pretty much it.
We cant down-mistform our way into a tower.
We cant down-mistform back to a line of allies if we overextend.
We get spiked. Our only defense while down is hard countered by stability, not to mention mist-spikes.
Even if we DO knockdown a spike, the enemy has just enough time to stand up and spike a second time, before Vengeance becomes available, due to its long activation CD.

yeh, i know that feeling. for the first few months of the game we had grasping earth for our #2 downed skill. it wasn’t even an interrupt or a knock down and vapour form was roughly on the same CD as vengeance. good thing the devs know how to balance skills… by swapping them around…

all things said, i’m making a warrior to test the waters. loving the shield so far (reflect projectiles and gain might on block is great for trolling in the middle of zergs), not sure what main-hand to use for my tanky build though

i’d rather have a single conjured weapon, with no charges, to last a set period of time (and be traited to last longer, or cooldown reduced), and it doesn’t get destroyed if i drop it (allowing others to use)

if i have to drop the conjure to use any skills on my main weps, i can choose to do so, and then pick up the conjure after (if it’s not covered in aoe or has anyone camping it, which it fine considering it stays on the field instead of getting instantly destroyed on drop).

as long as someone doesn’t take my conjure.

Even ANet recently admitted that Ele’s were the most mobile of all professions, so I’m not sure that I understand your point. The one profession that actually has no means of disengagement or escape — per ANet’s stated design — are Necros.

It’d be interesting to know what build/weapons you run with that you feel you can’t escape at will.

26:45 – Question: balance changes to mobility – “we don’t want the like to be the best mobile character in the game”, ele can change roles during combat so mobility is a trade-off

Are you comparing fire ball to every 1 skill in the game? If so then that would be the wrong way to go about it. For staff you would have to compare it every 1200+ Range weapon in the game.

taken from GW2 Wiki, 1200 range weapon auto-attacks, ordered by base damage only, additional info in brackets, not normalised to damage per second

spatial surge (assuming target is 900 range or more) – 348 (2 additional targets in beam)
long ranged shot (assuming target is at 1000 range or more) – 317 (projectile combo 20%)
fireball – 314
spatial surge (assuming target is 600-900 range) – 300 (2 additional targets in beam)
hip shot (with rifled barrels for 1200 range) – 251 (pierces targets, projectile combo 20%)
