Yep, I would second the trackball advice. I have carpal tunnel and I LOVE my trackball. I use a Logitech M570 and it’s great. For the turns in the JP instead of having to swing the mouse, it’s SO much easier to fling the ball around with my thumb. I personally like the Snowman (middle) path best, but I seem to be in the minority.

Marriage has nothing to do with biology. It never has. Otherwise, we wouldn’t “breed” dogs, we’d give them “marriages”.

I suspect fifteen minutes with Google and I could find a canine wedding.

Edit: 10 seconds and yes, it exists.

Hahaha! <3

I’m not sure whose point that proves. ;D

Anyway, I think that’s it for me, this thread (and myself) have gone soooo far off topic.

You can change that definition without ramifications. There are plenty of heterosexual couples who are married and abuse their kids, or who are married and neglect their kids, or who are married and don’t have kids. There are divorced couples and plenty of single parents. There are kids who are orphans and not enough people to adopt them.

By making marriage more inclusive, increase the number of families out there that might take some of those orphans and raise them in a loving environment. Sure things might change. They might change for the better.

How naïve, of course there are massive ramifications in this case…but yes we agree, change is both good and bad. The equal rights under the law portion of this, IMO, is good. But the use of the term marriage…no. The redefinition of marriage in stark contrast with tradition and basic biology is illogical.

Basic biology is a funny thing. Because trying to use it prove stuff gets in the way of other stuff. For example, primates are biologically not monogamous in nature. We’re primates. Therefore it is biologically unnatural for us to be monogamous. So the old “definition” of marriage goes against biology, and should be thrown out.

And you know, what we see going on around us tends to confirm the idea that monogamy is an artificial construct.

We are not apes, making that straight jump kills your argument. Also, many species are monogamous. And there are many different species of primates. Equating us to apes because we are both primates is idiotic.

Basic biology is, as I stated it, the need for a species to procreate to continue the species. This benefits societies as well, as it continues them and prevents them from perishing. Gay behavior is a biological dead end.

We are in the family Hominidae. That’s great apes. Humans ARE apes, actually.

Not in the manner he was referencing. Taxonomy is wonderful, try not to misuse it. He specifically was equating kitten sapiens to apes, as species. He wasn’t going up the taxonomic tree, or maybe you want to bring order, phylum, etc. into this…they would all be as inappropriate to the conversation.

I wasn’t misusing anything. You said “we are not apes”. I merely said, yes, technically, we are.

Your arguments make no sense. “It’s about biology, except when it isn’t and it’s about religion.” … you’re cute. See, I can be condescending too!

Marriage has nothing to do with biology. It never has. Otherwise, we wouldn’t “breed” dogs, we’d give them “marriages”. I mean, we’re talking strictly about procreation, right? Except… when we’re not.

Religions don’t own marriage. Besides, marriage differs between different religions.

The mistake you make is thinking that the government legally allowing a different type of marriage changes your version of marriage.

How does that make any sense if they already allow different forms of marriage from other cultures? The vows are different, the traditional clothes and ceremonies are different, and the cultural understanding of married life is different.

By your logic, those types of marriage being allowed already ruins your version of marriage.

There is no official state religion. So the laws on anything including marriage are not, and should not be determined by the standards of any religion’s standards of marriage. With that established, what argument do you have against gay marriage?

Where did I use the word religion in my post? Citing different forms of marriage is not the same thing as fundamentally changing what marriage is…most religions don’t do that…but again, I didn’t bring religion into this, you did.

Marriage is about bringing together a man and a woman, creating a stable, procreating environment. This benefits society, as it provides continuity of that society and falls in line with our biological imperative of reproduction. In other words, it made sense, and took into account our nature and biology. Few would argue that a stable home is best for child rearing, and it is inarguable that without a man and a woman you wont be producing children. Biology is simple that way. Gay marriage does not meet those criteria. The gay lifestyle, by definition, is a biological dead end.

Thinking you can change that definition, without ramifications throughout a society, is ridiculous. So the argument that gay marriage doesn’t represent change for virtually every part of our society, is just as ridiculous.

As an adoptive mother, as of this summer: Yes, this. More loving families for kids is always a good thing.

I don’t care how many people agree or disagree with the court’s decision but I do find it annoying when a company takes a position on political issues.

There are a bunch of reasons why and I’d rather not get too deep into it. To keep it simple; just do your job ANet, which is making Guild Wars.

They’re already taken a position with Jory and Kas for years and recently added a transgender NPC.

These things shouldn’t be in the game for the purpose of taking a position. They should be there for the purpose of making characters deeper and more interesting.

Anet never said they were in game for taking a position, even if someone on the forums said. Of course, art of any kind was always meant to challenge preconceptions and stereotypes and that’s as valid a reason for including something in a game as anything else.

What are we doing now? Talking about it. That’s publicity. That’s another reason to put something in a game.

But I don’t see the stuff Anet has put in the game as being there just to take a position. As a writer, I know that characters sometimes just show up, and when they do I welcome them in, unless there’s a compelling reason not to use them.

Now that I think about it, what really annoys me is people like that person I was responding to who get so excited about seeing a token NPC like Sya or a homosexual couple in a story. It makes me think that they are obsessed with these topics and that they put LGBT people on a pedestal.

I grew up in the SF Bay Area. Some of my best friends are gay. They are literally just normal dudes and you wouldn’t think they were gay if you met them. Then you have those guys who do the lisp and dress specifically to make sure everyone knows immediately, and that’s their entire life and identity. Those people make normal gays look bad. I am not gay but it’s an opinion all my gay friends share with me.

So anyway that’s kinda why the obsession annoys me. I think it encourages more tokenism because the unnecessary enthusiasm looks like positive feedback.

I’m with you on this. It’s like someone jumping up and down saying “notice me! I’m different! But treat me like a normal person though I’m making a spectacle!”

If I’m going to treat you like everyone else, then I don’t care. I don’t hate you, I don’t care what you call yourself, your personal life is your personal life, I don’t need to know about it.

Grats on the win, grats if you came out today or whatever. It should’ve happened sooner.

I’m at the point in conversations that if someone interupts me to tell me their gay, I just continue on with the conversation before. It’s no longer an OMG moment to me anymore.

Interestingly, in Sya’s case, she doesn’t tell you she’s gay or straight or anything like that. She basically says “Oh yeah, by the way, you knew me as Symon before. I go by something else now.” Kind of like me going up to people and saying “Oh yeah, by the way, my name used to be Smith and now it’s Jones.” and someone responding “Oh yeah, why’d you change it?” and myself replying “Oh, I got married/adopted/hated my name.” She mentions her orientation no more than I would be mentioning mine in that situation.

There is no jumping up and down. There is no pedestal. There is just a person telling you her name. Just existing. And people are just so angry about that.

Sinikka.2794

Hi there,

Just asking for a check on ticket 626791 put in on the 19th! It was about a refund for some town clothes turned into tonics. Thanks

PS – I have bought three accounts (me, sister, daughter) so I might have put the wrong serial number in, if that’s what the hold-up is. I have the others if needed!

EDIT -

I received a reply today, May 26, saying the request for a refund was denied. The service rep said there were no town clothes purchased, but they are sitting right there in my bank. I have no idea what’s going on, but honestly, I am starting to get upset.

EDIT 2 -
A new rep is saying there is no record of the purchase, so I included a screenshot of the items in my bank with my contacts page overlaying it to show my account name. ( I blocked out my friends list, in case that info shouldn’t be on here.)

EDIT 3 -
All fixed! Thanks so much to GM Wicho. I really appreciate it! <3

Feedback/Questions: Town clothes, Costumes, & Combat

While I really love the implementation of a Wardrobe system and making skins and dyes account bound, I have to add to the voices of those who are absolutely against the changes to town clothes – I almost always have some bits of various outfits on when I wear them. I don’t see how mixing and matching armor (which will be allowed?) is any different than mixing and matching town clothes. Surely there must be a way to allow us to keep each piece separate?

Having individual pieces become tonics is just… I can’t support that choice at all, either. More junk to carry around, only having one endless tonic usable at a time… no thank you.

I hope ANet is prepared for refunds, because what many of us bought costumes/town clothes for – variety – just became completely useless.

A waste of wall of text.

Rangers with pets are bad for lane 2’s boss, there is no exception. Elementalists with an elemental also bad for this lane; but still elementalists > rangers ^^

I have never, ever gone down in Lane 2 as a Ranger. Or had a platform fail because of me. Rangers just need to learn to recall their pets when the pet has aggro. It’s not bad at all. And Healing Spring and Spirit of Nature are helpful too. Healing Spring can also be used by adjacent platforms for healing, if cast on the edge.

Wurm thanks - from a non-hardcore player

I haven’t done any dungeons other than Arah story (and some of the Living Story ones), and I don’t do FotM. I don’t like instanced stuff, really. I am always afraid I am going to screw something up. I do enjoy playing with other people, though with 5-man instances I just feel like there’s too much pressure – some of which comes from maining an oft-derided Ranger.

So, it’s really come as a surprise to me that I absolutely love trying to kill the Wurm. For something aimed at the “hardcore”, it’s doubly surprising.

I love seeing huge groups of people coming together to try to beat it. Everyone has been really friendly, and usually everyone is doing their best to coordinate. So far, the best any of the attempts I’ve personally been in on TC have gotten our head down to 50% (Amber). I often find myself doing the explaining for the fight, and I have gotten really positive feedback in doing so. When we did manage to get it down to 50% before the event failed, we weren’t disappointed. There was so much cheering it was crazy.

I. LOVE. THAT.

It’s what I have been looking for. Both the Wurm encounter and the Marionette are helping change my opinion of grouped content in this game. I like the fact that new people can just show up and help out. I have yet to see anyone being yelled at for not having the right gear, etc. I hope that continues, even after the event loses its “new” feeling. I am even trying to join TTS so I can keep doing it and try the new Tequatl for the first time. I never would have even considered it before.

So, thank you Anet! I really mean that.

PSA: How To Target Wurms

in The Origins of Madness

Posted by: Sinikka.2794

Sinikka.2794

Thanks but no thanks. I won’t even try to target the Wurm so long as auto-targeting is broken.

I don’t use gimmicks in fights, either, even if the fight requires it. I only use my own abilities. I will never grab a barrel, harpoon gun, siege golem or anything else on a world boss fight. If my daggers and arrows do 0 damage to the boss, then tough luck. ArenaNet needs to redesign the encounters.

So… when you need to clear leaves from your lawn, you use your bare hands? Is a rake a gimmick? Is a fork? Is any tool that’s needed a gimmick? I honestly don’t understand this opinion.

Wow, I thought the JP was WAY harder last year! I love it either way, but this year definitely seems easier to me. I’ve done it 70-80 times so far.
I would agree with those who are saying not to jump the presents when the blue ones are there. It’s just really unstable. Wait for the other ones to load. It also helps me to use a trackball mouse, since my hands SUCK.

Farther down the Wintersday forum, I made a guide that might help a few of you. I think that some of you might just be too frustrated, which is totally understandable.

Sinikka.2794

Yes! We’re ALMOST THERE!

Ah, the home stretch. This means WIND, and AoEs, and SNOWLDERS (you know, snow boulders) all on the SAME STRETCH, oh my!

It’s actually not as bad as all that. In fact, your ticking health is really the biggest issue here. It often comes to within two or three ticks when all is said and done.

So, since you’ve run up that hill, you need to get your behind parked on that big peppermint. Of course, it’s not as easy as all that – once you get there, a snowman will be breathing down your neck. If you’re careful, that’s all he’ll be doing. Stay in the marked areas, and you should be fine. Wait for him to quit breathing, and for the boulders to pass.

Once the boulder has gone past, run/dodge the TWO AoEs that happen (sometimes at the same time). You have a semi-safe spot on the left, but don’t think that you’re out of danger. Take care to stand at the top of the mint, since there is some AoE overlap – (those tricksy developers)!

From that peppermint, allow the boulder to pass. Run ALL the way up to the presents on the right. SKIP the peppermint, as stopping there will nearly always siphon too much health for you to finish the puzzle. Sometimes the boulder can hit you on the first blue present, so do your best to get to the second one quickly.

You want to go straight down the center of the trail of presents, following the blue presents and/or candycanes. You will be very low on health. Sometimes you may even find that you die while you are in the process of jumping into the glowing box at the end. You MUST have enough health to make it all the way through, or you’ll just get sent back to the start!

If you’ve made it – WOOHOO! Congrats! Don’t forget your chest! Now, do it 19 more times for your achievement.

If you haven’t – Keep trying! Only the most dextrous of us get it the first time. Again, it took me FIVE HOURS to get through the very first time last year. Don’t work yourself up too much! -HUGS-

BONUS ROUND:
There is a small jumping path behind you, after you have entered the glowing gift box at the end. It leads up to a castle, where you can take a well deserved screenshot to brag to all your friends.

in A Very Merry Wintersday

Posted by: Sinikka.2794

Sinikka.2794

Oooh, that was scary, right? Well, pay attention or you’re gonna have to do it all again!

Just after the climb, there is a nasty snowman with a trick awaiting you. He is going to huff. . . and puff. . . and BLOW YOU DOWN!

All you need to do is breeeeathe, and wait for him to do the same. He will give a little breath first, as a warning. Then comes the big one that knocks everybody over the cliff. If you arrive and it seems clear, you can try to go through. If you’re cautious, just wait. You will not have another chance to heal before the end of the puzzle, so weigh your options carefully.

Once you are past that snowjerk and his stinky breath and across that candycane bridge, watch out for the snow boulders! You may choose one of two waiting spots, (as shown) before moving on to the next.

There are also (I know, right?) AoEs from Skritt that you will have to avoid on this path. If you are able to watch those red circles, it is safe to enter after you see the snow/ice burst – even if the circle has not disappeared yet.

Peppermints are your friends! They are delicious safe zones.

Move on up the hill as soon as the boulders pass. You will have to wait TWICE. Once at the candycane bridge, once on the two peppermints up the hill. I have given two views of the second waiting spot.

Wait there, then run up the hill to the BIG peppermint. But wait, there’s more!

Winter Wonderland (JP) Blues? Newbie guide!

in A Very Merry Wintersday

Posted by: Sinikka.2794

Sinikka.2794

Okay, so you’ve made it past the evil snowflakes. Congratulations! Now comes the hard part.

You’ll notice that when you have jumped down the peppermints, just after the snowflakes, you get healed. Woo! Break time! Once you’ve breathed a bit and uncramped your hands, it’s time to go on.

Make sure you talk to Tixx, as he’ll give you some options to consider.
The first choice is to take a Giant Wintersday present RIGHT NOW, forfeiting another after you complete the puzzle. If you die, you get sent back to the beginning.
The second is to take an EXTRA present and carry it with you to the end. If you make it, you get a total of THREE Giant Wintersday gifts at the end. If you fail, you get sent back to the beginning of the puzzle.
The third choice is to forfeit ALL presents, but you get to keep the peppermint as a check point if you should fail the coming section. This checkpoint will only be good ONCE, if you die on the second try, you go back to the beginning.

I recommend that newbies DO NOT jump while the blue presents are… present.
Yes, they look big and inviting, but the whole lot of them are unstable and you must be quick and dextrous to get past them while they’re like this.

What you need to do is wait until someone quicker/less informed jumps on through. They may reset on their own, though I have yet to see this happen.

When this reset happens, you want to jump when the nearest row of RED/WHITE presents have just loaded. I mean, AS SOON as they load. This gives you basically a straight shot right up this section. Do keep in mind that the more people are on the gift boxes, the more unstable they become. Take your time, let groups pass if you want to. Just make sure to move enough that you don’t get booted from the instance!

Winter Wonderland (JP) Blues? Newbie guide!

in A Very Merry Wintersday

Posted by: Sinikka.2794

Sinikka.2794

Hi everyone!
I have gotten a lot of in-game questions and requests for tips for this puzzle and I know some people don’t look outside the forums for help, so hopefully this will do a little bit of good! Just FYI, I average about 9 JP completions per round, in case anyone wonders.
I don’t pretend to be the best at all, I just want to try to help!

Super Basic Winter Wonderland Guide

Starting path recommendations -

I personally find the Quaggan path to be easiest, and Gingerbread the hardest. This is based entirely on preference, so feel free to ignore me and use whatever!

I recommend turning your settings to “Best Performance”. Even on great computers, cleaner lines can help with jumping/focusing. You may experience lag if you are grouped up, in which case you should have just enough time to let people pass or speed up ahead to (hopefully) fix it.

Your goal here is to keep moving, but not to freak out and go too fast! If you DO go too fast, you’ll often find that your snowflakes haven’t appeared yet, so don’t jump out into thin air!
The only time you really want to pause is at the candy canes – a lot of people get hung up on them. Sometimes they take a second to load, as well. Don’t hang out there too long, though!
It’s gonna take some practice, but you’ll get past this section, I promise. Put on some nice music and turn the in-game volume down if you’re getting stressed.

PS – It took me 5 hours to complete this JP for the first time last year… your goal is to beat that time and then rub it in here.

Onward!

I will likely be getting the game for my 10yo daughter for Christmas. She loves to sit and watch me play, and I occasionally let her run around in the towns. She does the same thing in FFXIV. She’s got limited screen time (she earns her screen time through exercising/playing and reading), only plays when I am with her, and our computers are located in another building on our property and not our house (so no sneaking at night!), so I am not worried about the addiction bit.

She isn’t allowed to even see the chat; I put a sticky note over that portion of the screen when she’s there. It doesn’t bother her a bit.

She keeps begging me to let her make a “plant person”. I told her if she could remember what they’re really called for a month, I’d let her. ;D

It’s not just food, as unknowable mentioned. I am pretty sure I saw an Ele use their healing. I will pass on it until the bugs are fixed. I hope it’s soon, because it seems pretty fun!

I was able to disarm them, but I haven’t been able to actually damage Canach with them… even if he’s right on top of them, and I trigger them properly.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we were tagged as doing it for today, which would mean no chest for us.

I really hope that’s not the case.

You might need to do it again, since it’s been patched. I think this is happening to everyone who completed it before the game was updated.

I got the Karma reward, bag of coins, karka shells, and exp. You might need to redo it, since they patched it.

I tried blasting him over the mines but they don’t trigger.

You have to trigger them by using the skill for the wrong mine on it. Ask Kiel, she will tell you how it works.

I triggered them, but it didn’t seem to injure him at all. I only tried the instance twice, so maybe I just didn’t line it up well enough… but I really don’t think it worked properly for me.
