Yak's Bend needs strong WvW Guilds/Players!

I’ve been a proud Yak since day 1. I’ve had the privilege to fight with these guys and see our rise in the ranks from a tier 6 server to a now tier 3. With a minor influx of new guilds we have come to this level by being tenacious and honing our gameplay and tactics. We have very little ques (if ever) for WvW (despite our server being high population). We have a large NA presence with a significant Oceanic. Where we have been lacking in numbers, we have leveraged through strong defense. If we had some Euro Primetime or additional Oceanic, we will be ready to move up the ranks and compete in the highest levels. You will be transferring to a server where the homeland is the homeland. We defend, upgrade, and fight to the last camp. We have never been cleaned off Yak’s Bend Borderland in T3.

If you have a large guild and have genuine interest in transferring, please feel free to come over to our community website at www.yaksbend.com or PM our many competent alliance commanders to help with your transfer!

Regarding the invulnerable space behind the supply camps.

Whenever I see someone do this, I screen shot it and report it. As far as the way Yak’s conducts WvW, we like to set a standard of ethical game play. I have told numerous people that as soon as you jump down from that SW Supply camp ledge, you are fair game. If you use the invulnerable space, you are reported whether you’re from YB or not. We have built a reputation based on ethical, skilled, and strong gameplay. I will not let anyone from Yaks tarnish a reputation we as a server have earned with childish semantics such as cheating. I’m not delusional in the regard that all servers do it, but I do not think anyone from our servers should tolerate it.

As one of the commanders who was attacking FA yesterday, I would like to clarify some of the strategic thinking as to why FA borderlands was attacked over TCs.

Yak’s Bend does not have any animosity towards FA. We chose to attack FA because the SW WP spawn is easier to capture a keep and secure a foothold and FA was in the point lead. Capturing FA territory had a higher probability of success. In a game where point ticks occur, it is important to go into territory you think you can go into and hold. On top of that after countless attempts at redvale (see references above for “the battle of redvale”), we were never removed from the map until TC came and did it. Why? Because FA’s team thought that the best way to relieve pressure from their own map was to attack the smaller team of the two. However, it left you with a dynamic where Yak’s players ported back to YBBL to clean out FA’s assault and left your homeland with a 1 v 1 TC FA battle while the majority of your forces were at Yak’s. TC found our remaining keep, tower, and supply camp completely undefended as we came back to YBBL to clean FA out.

Yesterday while making moves for your garrison, we were wiped several times by TC. Claiming 2 v 1 is a failure to understand the strategic mechanics of the game. There are definitely points and times where teams have the the incentive to work together to maximize the point grab but in the long run, only one team can win and there is only so much territory.

We have had an incredible week thus far with great battles and some good tactics displayed on the field. Let’s all remain the great sportsman that our servers have demonstrated to be and keep playing it out. Yak’s came back from a 6K deficit yesterday to claim 2nd yesterday and we’re still clipping on TC’s heels. I’d love to see FA come out and show the same tenacity as they have been the past several weeks.

It’s one of my favorite moments in WvW when an orb is on the move and it just goes crazy trying to secure it. By removing the orbs of power, we will no longer have this experience available to us. I highly urge Anet to fix the altar problem and put them back in (maybe modified)

Thieves have shortbow #2 for 1200 range.

Guardians have scepter #2 for 1200 range.

I play both in WvW and i’d recommend carrying multiple weapon sets to handle different situations

It’s not about balanced or imbalanced. It’s about incentives and strategy. Perfectly balanced PvP is in sPvP. WvW is strategic tactical warfare and orbs added a huge element of strategy. There is a general consensus that the buffs were too much and that those should be tweaked but the removal of orbs from the WvW BLs eliminates some of the best moments in WvW.

Selwynn, well written and I 100% agree with the sentiment. I WvW 90% of the time in this game and PvE 10%.

ANet, there is an enormous contingency of players who are searching for quality combat like the maps you have created. In terms of growth strategy, WvW is the “dynamic event” that will keep an enormous portion of your player base and draw more to it. Especially the ones that are always looking for a fight. If you can develop a mass PvP experience that is fresh and well maintained without hackers and exploits, you will have a true competitive advantage. I’ve been looking for a game like this for years. You’ve got a good headstart but don’t fail to see the value of WvW in growing this game as well as keeping the current playerbase coming back.

Great idea, I fully support this. (maybe 3 seconds of being stationary).

Only concern is when you need to use a WP to get inside a keep during defense. Maybe make it so that when you click on the WP it’s still accessible to you during the cast period as most of the keeps uncontest/contest in a matter of 1-2 seconds.

It’s not necessarily the incentive to attack. It’s the incentive to defend.

An orb that gave your team world wide map bonuses which mattered gives a strong incentive to upgrade the keep and defend the keep, even across borderlands. When you had fully upgraded keeps attacked with an orb is when you saw big groups of 40-50 people port maps to come and defend it because the strategic value of the orb is what made it worthwhile.

Without them, all keeps become worth the same and it doesn’t matter which keep you are attacking or which keep you are defending except for some strategic positioning on the respective borderland. It also fosters greater teamwork between your entire WvW team.

An orb keep was a world wide priority objective. Now the keeps are tradeable points.

Yak’s is still looking for you! Seen a few new people on during my time zone! Looking forward to seeing more. Btw we have several awesome heavy – oceanic guilds (TOG & FT) which are absolute pros during this hour.

standard game theory proves that this won’t really work. It’s pretty unlikely that servers will actually formally agree not to attack another unless the server they are teaming up against does something really awful (constant orb hacking) and it’s something beyond the game or incentives of score. Otherwise if two teams are going gung ho against another, it’s only a matter of time before the two teams in alliance HAVE to go for each other.

Keep the altar and orb mechanic. Make the altar invulnerable until the inner door goes down (this will prevent hackers after the first door comes down).

Make the orbs give +x supply regeneration to every tower/ keep owned on all 4 borderlands instead of stats or health.

This will keep the orbs as a very powerful objective and maintain the whole fun of chasing orbs/ going after orbs while not empowering the winning side too much. Besides it just potentially prolongs sieges a little bit more as +x supply won’t do much after you drain the supply in a defense.

I wanted to clarify for a lot of people who think that siege will stack to crazy levels that there are already siege limitations in place. You can only build so much siege in certain areas so this isn’t really a concern.

A mechanic that strategically affects supply is brilliant. Maybe adding +10 supply to every camp you own throughout the 4 borderlands for each orb or better yet, supply generation to the team that owns it. (maybe +1 supply to every owned objective per minute) that would really balance out the stats problem and yet make them very desirable to have

In response to the concept of Orbs being stacked in the winning team, we have overcome this problem many times by hitting the orb keeps directly when porting to a new map. If you port 40-50 people onto a map that is fully in your enemy’s control and can stealth move across the map to the enemy keep, you can easily take down a fully upgraded orb keep before anyone can respond. It’s really not that big of a deal.

I made another post about this called “Why Orbs of Power are a good thing” but I wanted to copy and post the text here in response to this move from the devs and wanted to see the community’s thoughts on it.

I see a lot of concerns regarding the orbs of power. I gave it some thought and I actually believe that they are a good thing to give stat bonuses and extra HP. Although I think the stat bonuses may be a bit high and maybe should have diminishing returns. (1 orb 5%, 2 orbs 7.5%, 3 orbs 10%).
The reason orbs are a good thing is because it gives the enemy team a reason to defend your map. Not all keeps are worth the same and if there was no significant bonus from an orb held on your enemies map, people wouldn’t care to port there to defend it. Right now, towers and camps are tradeable, keeps are a little more worthwhile but an orb keep is usually fully upgraded and defended. An orb on your home map in a fully fortified central garrison which is under serious attack? You bet that most people from the maps will come to defend it.
Imagine if all the orb gave you was a diminished repair bill cost? Would you really care if your enemy was coming to take it so that you could save 60c every time you died?
The orbs should grant a significant bonus to the team across all 4 maps so that it gives people incentive to defend keeps on other people’s BLs. Otherwise we’d all just focus on our own borderland and wait until its fully capped before occasionally meeting in EB.

As a player from Yaks, it seems like there is some internal conflict on DH regarding guilds and alliances there. I’d kindly ask that you guys try to keep it off the thread.

I do think that regardless of the the drama we can all agree that the thief in the video was obviously hacking. 2 clear shot videos, 1 copied chat with a admission. (why you would ever admit it if you were doing it is beyond me)

The video with the commander hacking is really another level.

As another commander, I really say that you should be ashamed of yourself. I’m not your parent and I’m certainly not your friend, but cheating is deplorable and you should really consider whether you’re worthy to lead people on your server to anything. All you’re doing is losing credibility from your team and discrediting your server’s legitimately good players.

Worban, if you’re reading this. I’m going to assume the best and think that you didn’t know that the thief was hacking. I honestly hope DH can clean up some of these hackers, it really will harm you guys in the long run as a community.

To everyone else, it’s been such a great matchup. Defending the CD night crew was absolute chaos yesterday. We had all 4 gates under attack at garrison yesterday (10+) and despite having outmanned on homeland and insurmountable odds, I’m really proud of all the Yaks who stuck that one out to the end.

WvW: Why I haven't logged in for a month.

I’m fully geared and need no carrot. The gameplay is fun in and of itself.

I understand the need for progression for some but how about those WvW titles or the invaders armor? I don’t think they should augment stats on gear at all so really all that is left is cool skins or titles. Ultimate Dominator is a pretty good title IMO (10K kills >.<). This game should ultimately be about skill at the highest level. Never gear.

A good solution would be epic skins or better yet legendary precursors. Maybe 10,000 badges per precursor? I think there would have to be the equivalent of a PvE equivalent like 1000 of each dungeon token. Just a thought

R E F L H E X, if they only had an arrow cart and catapault, it wouldn’t have been worthwhile to use golems in the first place. You could have had people aoeing the walls and rotating on rams and supply run for 16 rams for the same price.

Golems are premade rams. They’re extremely effective. They are awful in the field and generally against infantry. We use them all the time on Yak’s when we need to assault a fully fortified keep. You get around the mobility issue with mesmer portals. They are not overpriced either in gold or supply because of their ability to eliminate doors quickly. Otherwise, this game would become golem armies portaling around all day. The high cost ensures that they are used only in extreme situations and cannot be rapidly built.

I think that ballistas are the best way to counter this. You only need 30-40 supply for a ballista so it won’t be too difficult to speed build one as a 5 man team while you’re 30 man zerg is already engaging them. They either have to split to deal with your ballista where you will be actively engaged in the fight you were looking for anyways or they will all die/ retreat. Has anyone tried this yet?

I’d also note that I think its a pretty scummy tactic to stack like that. I understand people’s motivation to win but where is the dignity?

Dear WvW community!

Yak’s is the server I have been on since day 1 and I’ve had the pleasure to see how far we’ve come as a community and as WvWers.

I don’t want to make this message too long so I’m going to list out why you should consider a move to Yak’s Bend (and stay) for your GW2 career.

1. Our rise through the ranks has not been a result of transfers (although we do appreciate our new guilds and members). Instead, it has been because we have learned to work together as a community. Our WvWers are from all different guilds but we all play together, there are no politics. Because of this, Yak’s has a strong base of WvWers who are dedicated to our server. We have enormous server pride.

2. It’s a server you can be proud to be a part of. If you read our previous WvW server threads, most of our opponents compliment us on our fair game play and legitimate use of tactics. We appreciate good fights.

3. You can make a big difference. Right now, our US Primetime team is excellent. We are holding our own in T4 against Crystal Desert and Darkhaven and are consistently competitive and present. Our weakness is that we are lacking in a strong WvW oceanic time presence. I am a commander on Oceanic time and when we get on, we can easily field 50-60 people. We sometimes have single borderland ques by 12PM US EST. One strong WvW Oceanic guild or another 20-30 Oceanic players working another map would allow us to be an extremely strong Oceanic presence giving us good coverage.

4. Your difference would be thoroughly appreciated. Are you on a server dominated by some big name guilds? We don’t have any guilds that dominate the WvW scene. Only teammates that help each other accomplish objectives together. Peoples’ accomplishments are recognized and all guilds have deep respect for each other. This message isn’t to say that we don’t welcome more US players or PvE guilds, we certainly do. As a commander who wants our server to win (in a fair and legitimate way) it is my responsibility to acknowledge the weaknesses beyond our control and address them.

I will say that we aren’t looking for server transfer hoppers. We want players that are in it to win it (as a Yak!) and are looking for a community that would like to play with us as much as we would like to play with you.

^ A lot of us on Yak’s love WvW. No one likes a disheartening blowout but when the opponent is good, the fight is good. If you’re looking for some 1 v 1 action, sPvP is designed for that. WvW is all about organized teamwork and strategic tactical warfare.

We have been playing as a team and pushing objective by objective. Yak’s is jumping in rankings because we are getting more organized by the day and we’re actively developing our commanders and pugs.

Our matchup last night (weekday) was also very very intense. I think WvW is very worth doing. I enjoy it, I enjoy the people I meet through it and I think a lot of people on the CD/DH/YB thread would say the same.

Furthermore, I’m curious as to why you decided to post this kind of comment in our server battle thread. It has absolutely nothing to do with the current match up and I’m requesting the mod to delete it as it just doesn’t belong here.

Hello GoM,

I wanted to say that I admire your efforts to organize this. We set up something similar on Yaks and it’s been working pretty well.

Some advice on how we got it rolling was that we setup a free 1000 person mumble and have slotted so that guilds can have their own private mumble channel within the server. We’ve been heavily advertising it in /team & /map chat (very big group effort) and it’s been gathering momentum and we had over 100+ people in WvW last week.

Don’t worry, I believe the Yak’s community is mature enough to see that true class pvpers aren’t the ones spawn camping.

As to what’s going on in the background for all of the Yaks WvWers, we’re organizing and preparing for the next matchup. It’s been a tough week but I hope we learned a lot (I certainly did, thanks TW for teaching me some solid T1 tactics)

I’m going to come out of the gate swinging again tomorrow at the server reset. This time we’re going to hold the point lead we build.

Dear Dev Team,

First, I’d like to start of saying that I really enjoy your game. I want this game to succeed because there has been an MMO gap in my gaming experience for so long which GW2 currently fills.

I have noticed a trend in the forums lamenting the current system in WvW and addressing numerous issues about how it is or isn’t fun. I’ve spent a significant amount of time thinking about how to improve the system so that this game does not lose people or change into a more negative community.

I’d like to address the current scoring system. I actually think the mechanic of points for supply camps/ towers/ and keeps is a perfectly good idea. I think the big issue is accumulated deficit and the subsequent demoralization and thus lack of players logging in to play WvW.

I was fortunate enough to be in the YB/ SoR/ NSP battle last week which was for lack of a better word: epic. I saw healthy population across all three servers the entire week.

I do believe there are population imbalances that need to be addressed at some point but instead, I wanted to present a simple, alternative scoring system which will really allow the whole week to be competitive and fun for everyone.

Each day the points should reset to 0 and a tally for best of 7 should be kept for the week. So at 8PM EST the scoreboard should reset and whoever has the most points at 7:59PM the next day should win a point for the day. This simple adjustment would make the games competitive for at least 4 days instead of the current “2” because a team that dominates in the weekend essentially runs to win the rest of the week due to the aforementioned problem. So how do we push the game to be competitive for all 7 days?

The orbs.

On the 7th day of the matchup, each orb should count for 2 points to the team that holds them at the end of the game. This will provide even 2 teams with a 5/1/1 deficit to really put their best effort forward all the way through to try to secure a 3 orb advantage at the end of the game. In the event of a tie breaker given the point system, the accumulated points built throughout the week can serve as the determinant.

The system is a bit rough but I think it would fundamentally change the incentives and scoring of the game so that players will log on when they can, contribute in a good manner to their team (go Yaks!) and provide WvW with a steady stream of players.

I would love to hear other people’s feedback on how to improve this system below. I’d appreciate that if you came up with an alternative system to start a new thread so that this thread doesn’t lose focus. If you don’t think it’ll work, I’d also like to hear that as well. Just please provide why.

Fellwitch, there are a lot of responses on this from ANet now

My understanding is that it is top priority because the dev who is responding has the tag “emergency response team” (smart move ANET)

ETA is apparently soon because the dev mentioned “hotfix” although I pray it is before the next match up. We just had an epic push on Yaks bend and held DB north hill only to be wiped by an invisible concentrated mob.

BTW, to the commander at SoR who coordinated that. I commend you for the tactic, I would have done the same thing. It’s a shame we couldn’t properly defend the hill because no one could see them coming.

Reality check for people qq-ing about invisible enemies

This also isn’t about 1v1 “activate retaliation combat”

This is about large scale 20 vs 20 battles where everyone needs to know what the ebb and flow of the fight is.

If you can’t see your enemies retreating or how many of them are down vs your own team, how do you know when to push or retreat?

How about just flat out running into groups of 5 people that you didn’t know were there on the way back to a keep.

Like everyone else states here, you have my sympathy for your bad internet but this is a huge problem that changes WvW mechanics.

Personal rivalries are all good and fun but the bigger issue is that people grief when they have killed someone.

/tell xplayer “owned”, “pwned”, “noob”, etc. etc.

I also like personal rivalries but I think ANet made a good decision not letting you see the other players names to prevent these kinds of exchanges

I know that there is already a thread on this but it is now 300 replies long and ANet has responded to it once. I don’t know if their response is all they need to address this issue or whatnot but I wanted to write something more formal.

TLDR: ANet, Invisible enemies is a critical issue that needs to be resolved ASAP. We need more information, regular information, and we need to know that this is important on ANet’s list of priorities.

Dev team,

I love your game, I have played this game almost religiously since release and I have not had this much fun since (the legendary) UO days.

However, WvW has become a mess since the patch. The community is getting frustrated and we feel that our needs are not being addressed because there has been no communication except for this.

This is not just a serious issue. This is a critical, game breaking issue for WvW. People are getting frustrated because we deserve and expect more from a game that we paid for to be honest. I’ve only been in WvW because of the incredible matchup between Yaks, SoR and NSP. It’s too tight for the competitive side of me not to overlook this.

Why is WvW critical? Because it fosters your community in an incredible way I haven’t seen in any other game in my entire gaming “career” (10+ years). Just read the Yaks, SoR and NSP thread, the sportsmanship and respect is excellent. It is retaining a lot of your players and creating a gaming experience that strongly differentiates you from other MMOs.

My recommendations
1. Fix this issue ASAP. If I was running this project, my team would be in the office 24/7 until this is done because you are possibly losing players by the day. The longer you take, the faster the rate accelerates because people are losing faith in your ability to respond. People’s frustration is turning into despair.

2. If you really can’t find a fix in a reasonable time, put it back to the old rendering model until you can. Do not leave the game like this any longer than you already have.

There are countless photos of this ridiculous problem but here are some of my experiences

1. Dying in the middle of walking back to a keep because I was hit by multiple enemies without ever seeing them

2. Coordinating a team to hold a chokepoint and then nobody seeing the team come up the stairs. Needless to say we wiped with chokepoint advantage and greater numbers. It is strategically tilting WvW in a way where strategy doesn’t matter any longer. People are complaining about zerg when there is in fact a lot of strategy. Invisible enemies are actually turning your well designed strategic WvW maps into a zerg.

I don’t need to belabor the point, read the threads, read your in game chat. You are at a “crisis point” and you need to react accordingly.
