Yeah, this really needs to be addressed. It literally costs more (a lot more) to buy the recipe than it costs to craft the item itself, that’s just not acceptable.
I don’t see this changing unless more copies of the recipe are made available. Limited supply + high demand = insane price.
I expected to see an announcement of what those Continuum Rifts are a teaser for, or at least speculation on it.
Does anyone know?
The ones all over cities? Bug with a Chronomancer skill that was, I think, just fixed.
I’d really like to see the return of the hench/Hero idea for GW2. They will never be as effective as a group of actual players, so I don’t think they would take the place of a group in more challenging dungeons, but they might be just enough to allow additional players to access content they would not otherwise play.
I don’t see things like this being added for the open zones (heck, they hide minipets when things get crowded as it is), but for instances, I’d be all for it. Maybe as a perk of an expansion one of these years.
I think the original reason for the cap was to offset the “loss” of the points a new player coming to the game would earn to catch up to a veteran player. (Also, and I may be remembering this incorrectly, but couldn’t you get points per daily achievement at the start, rather than just 10 points for doing 3 a day?)
I don’t know whether achievement points is much of a competition these days, so how much that matters, I am not sure. If you have fun with the game, though, is it really worth quitting if the cap stays in place? You might raise stubbornness to an art form, but still.
Also, I might agree with your position on removing the cap, but I don’t agree with the “I have spent money on the game, give me what I want if you hope to see any more” statement. That comes off a bit too dramatic for me. I know it is a version of voting with your wallet, but the phrasing seems off and just a few steps below the “I am a/know a lawyer” threat.
Depends on whether you’re more of a “journey” or an “end” player. Experience comes plentyful in this game, and you’ll have most likely filled out the experience bar long before you’ll aquire the mastery points to unlock the masteries.
If gradual advancement is something you enjoy, don’t use the tomes. That way you’ll prolong the time before you’re at the cap again. If you prefer to have every number capped as soon as possible then use as many tomes as you like, but expect to run into situations where your experience is again “useless” (or at best gives you more spirit shards than you could ever need, once you have finished all masteries) a lot faster this way.
Good to know that experience gain once masteries are complete still gets something, even if it is just spirit shards. They could potentially have more use down the line whereas just having the xp vanish seems a waste.
I think I’ll end up using the tomes on a couple of characters this weekend.
By the way, new players that buy the game get a free boost to level 80 for one of their characters. I’ve met those that have used that quickly to at least unlock basic gliding, then go back to learning and leveling the old way, and I’ve met others who prefer to play classic Tyria and the whole personal story before they start the HoT story and unlock masteries. It’s a choice for everybody.
The Level 80 boost is a whole other kettle of skelk. At least if your intent is to use it and unlock masteries, you are getting something for the experience.
(Side question: Do people who get to 80 and do not have HoT on their accounts gain anything for experience?)
I saved my tomes until I had a stack of 250. I keep the stack, and burn all the new ones I get for Spirit Shards.
And what is your plan for the 250?
Tomes all the way, grinding pve maps to learn a class is a waste of time.
Not the first time, and definitely not for people who have never played an MMO before. Not everyone is you (or me) with enough experience that instant 80 is trivial enough to just drop right into…
Agreed.
That does make me wonder, though, if a new player starts the game, chances are he or she will reach 80 by following the story long before getting to Heart of Thorns. With masteries locked behind that story mission, that would mean jumping ahead for a bit, or choosing to lose the xp like I did.
If you have a character at max level, it’s pretty much just deciding if you want to do map completion after you get to 80, or while you get to 80.
I did my most recent character with tomes, and it’s been vaguely annoying not to have much of the world unlocked when I wanna do 80-ish things, but not really more than it was wanting to do world bosses while being under-level.
Good point about the map still being covered. I do plan to still do the map completions, though, so it may not matter too much overall. And, as I am running those maps, I’ll be advancing a mastery track at the same time.
Note to self. Before doing edging difficult jumps, disable double tap to dodge.
Exactly! Accidental dodge rolls have wrecked JPs more than a few times for me. >.<
Also, I still have not gotten all the way through Troll’s Revenge. My refusal to look up the path may be starting to crack.
well…….
Personally I get rather lost when just lvling a profession instantly to 80, but different between people I guess, some will keep playing it, and learn all the rotations etc. I just wontBeside that reason, then only story, but even then it is just a story you have most likely been through
Even if I get to 80 using tomes, those characters will still be playing through the maps and story. It is just that the experience they gain will be going to the account wide mastery track rather than just the specific character level.
So I will still have time to try out and learn the skills as I go. Dungeons and story instances may be a bit tricky since they will be scaled up well before I am necessarily ready for it, but maybe that will just be encouragement to learn faster.
If you are playing a character that have not yet got to level 80, your XP is not wasted. It is used on levelling that character up.
When I said essentially wasted, I meant it with respect toward overall progression. I have options when it comes to gaining character levels, but not so much when it comes to gaining mastery xp. So I wonder if it would not be better to have as many characters as possible contributing to the account progression.

I am returning to GW2 as one of my main games and, since I had to cut way back on playtime shortly after HoT launched, I am still a fair distance behind in progress.
My main character had already been at 80 for a long time, but had not yet gotten to the HoT content story-wise. As I went through the remaining story bits and did daily achievements, events, festivals, etc, I realized I was essentially losing all the experience I would have been putting toward mastery tracks since unlocking those required completing the opening of the expansion story.
That would probably have been a smart thing to do, but since story is one of the big reasons I play (grr, raids), I decided I’d just have to take the hit and deal with the lost xp while I worked my way forward. No regrets on that part.
Now, though, I have made it to HoT, I have unlocked and started working on masteries, my level 80 xp is useful once more. Except when I am playing characters that have not yet reached 80, I wonder if that experience is essentially wasted. I have somewhere just north of 150 tomes of knowledge I could use to bump a handful the rest of the way, then they can start helping on the mastery tracks, too. Is that the best move? I know they give spirit shards to characters at 80, but which is worth more when it comes to playtime?
tl;dr – Is there any reason to NOT use tomes of knowledge to boost as many characters as I can to 80 as soon as possible?
Thank you for any tips or advice.
The first MMO I played was World of Warcraft back in 2007. At no point back then or any time since would anyone have accused me of being a great player, but I got by. I made it through (and still do) on solo play and small group dungeons, but it was the stories that kept me playing.
I was fascinated by this new (to me) way of participating in a narrative. There were drawbacks, of course, and one of those was that the culmination of every story happened in the big expansion-ending raid. On one level, it made sense to me that the finale would have to be bigger than anything else, but on another, it was annoying that I could spend all this time and effort in the game only to be left on the sidelines at the end. I could read about the story, I could watch video from other players, but I was not good enough to take part like I had up until there.
I have had similar experiences in other games since, but not quite to that extent and not (yet) with Guild Wars. I do remember the reaction some players had to ending the personal story with a dungeon, though. People who had solo’d up until that point and had no interest in dungeons were all of a sudden left having to either skip the end, watch it through others like I did with WoW, or change their playstyle and try something that, to them, may not have been fun. I understand how they felt, but at least I knew GW2 had dungeons and had story in those dungeons, so it was part of the landscape I expected.
Now, coming back to the game after some time away, I find that landscape changed. I have not looked too deeply into how the story is told through or affected by the raids (I am still catching up and don’t want to risk too many spoilers), but I am starting to fear I’ll find the same situation I was in all those years ago in WoW. Which, if that is what the development team wants, then it is what it is. Just don’t pretend it is accessible to players like me who are not good enough to be (or just don’t enjoy) playing in raids.
I can hope there are better, clearer answers by the time I get up to where this will matter. If not, I’ll just have to accept that “This is my story” was only going to take us so far and the game’s story is not always going to evolve in a way suited to my ability to play it.

Found the personal story key reset: Monday 08:30 UTC (I hope that is still correct)
If there are other things I need to watch out for, I’d still appreciate the info.
Thanks!
Hello, all. I read the following about Black Lion Chest Keys in personal story rewards:
“Black Lion Chest Keys from the early personal story rewards have been limited to one per week accountwide.”
I am not interested in key farming, but I do not want to miss out on a key, either. I recently (this past weekend) created two new characters and did the level 10 story on only one of them because I am not sure what “per week” means exactly. Do I need to wait a full 7 calendar days? Is this tied to a specific weekly reset time?
Thank you for any information you can provide. If there is no specific info, I guess my new asura Elementalist will just have to hold off on story for a bit. (I am sure she can wait patiently without getting annoyed and setting everything on fire…right?)
Also, related to this, are there any similar restrictions I should be on the lookout for so one character does not get shortchanged? (Elementalist glares, wondering if that was an asura joke.)
So, I have a guildie who was on what used to be a Ch7 story part and now it is in 8. does that mean he misses out on what used to be in between?
No, though your question confuses me. No story steps moved from Chapter 7 to Chapter 8—just the opposite.
Hmm. Ok, looks like his current step was in 8, just much earlier than where I am.
He is on ‘Estate of Decay’ and I am on ’Romke’s Final Voyage’. I’m now showing my part as in 7 and the journal does not seem to show much of what I had worked on leading up to this point. He is in 8 and the concern was that since he is now “ahead” of me in the new ordering, he will end up skipping some of the parts I’d done.
Also, I wondered if I’d now end up replaying things I’ve already completed. I was nearing the end instance.
Re: Narnia
You’re kidding! That’s a travesty. The whole point is to be amazed by the creation of the world you already know. Reading it first loses all the impact!
Exactly!
(edited by Tanek.5983)
Yikes.
So, I have a guildie who was on what used to be a Ch7 story part and now it is in 8. does that mean he misses out on what used to be in between?
I just don’t see how new players to GW2 will see Trahearne as sane. Or their character as sane for following him.
Well, as to that point, how many people really thought him sane before? :P
P.S. I am still annoyed that the Chronicles of Narnia boxed sets all have The Magician’s Nephew as book 1 now, so I know how to hold a grudge over the re-ordering of a story.
(edited by Tanek.5983)
From the update notes:
Chapter 7 is now focused on helping Trahearne cleanse Orr.
Chapter 8 is now focused on defeating Zhaitan.
What does this mean in practical terms? Have pieces of the story been moved/removed as players are saying? Thanks.
Livestram on Taimi?
Scott can you guys perhaps be a little more consistent with notifying players when these streams are about to happen?
You have a twitter channel, you have a facebook page and you have official forums – yet these streams are almost never advertised on any of these channels. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect that you guys might actually let players know when things were going on?
This was on Twitter on the 14th when the stream happened:
“Come hear all about me on the #GuildWars2 at Noon Pacific! http://www.twitch.tv/guildwars2 ^Taimi”
I don’t know about Facebook since I don’t check there, but I think there are usually streams every Friday. You can also subscribe to their Twitch channel to get emailed when one starts.
Thank you for the quick fix on this.

As for the characters that got or did not get a second gift:
When I was young there were two different ways kids in the family looked at presents at birthdays and Christmas. One way was to open your gift and focus on what you received. For the most part, kids who did this were happy because it would be something they’d asked for and wanted. (sure, there was the occasional pair of socks, but them’s the breaks
)
The other way was to open your gift and then start comparing it to what the other kids got. Were the others more expensive? Did you get one item and Bobby got two? (good thing we did not have the internet to instantly check which gift was rated higher on Amazon) For the most part, kids who did this were upset in some way and enjoyed their own presents less.
I prefer the first way.
This is the same on Stormbluff Isle. Would be nice to have those effects back.
We get to ponder why this game has no public test server.
Very off topic, so I apologize for replying, but…
I’m perfectly fine with there being no public test server.
For one, the releases are so rapid now that a test server would have to be running constantly alongside the previous event and managing that sounds like it might actually take away from the process rather than add to it.
Plus, I have seen test servers in other games. Even with issues like karma changes or bugs, GW2 has fewer problems and fixes them faster than other games I have played. Test servers mainly end up as spoilers for the story and either burn some players out faster, or let players work out all the tricks and traps before they play on live.
I say ArenaNet should keep doing what they are doing because it is working and they are improving as they go along.
EC — thanks for doing the math there, and helping clarify the fairness (actually, extreme generosity) of the distribution.
So what do the rest of us get for listening to the post that said not to use our karma items until something was worked out?
would that also apply to volunteers? i mean if you are by yourself volunteering to take time out of your own schedule to come down and voice a character, wouldnt that be our choice as a volunteer? you as a volunteer are aware that you wont be paid
Yeah, labor laws don’t easily allow for “volunteer” work for a for-profit business (unless it’s a small family business or self-employed, etc.) There would be too much room for exploitation.
There would be SAG issues too if ANet bypassed using their talent for non-union actors.
While I don’t know that volunteers would be the answer, I think there is a bit of short-sightedness if SAG does not allow for some minor non-union work in the game. By limiting voice work to SAG-only, it can limit the kinds of interactivity and customization available. Interactivity and customization that could, in turn, have made players happier and/or brought in more players. More players could mean more money which would mean more resources to do complex things later which could mean more work for SAG.
Other reasons include: you already looted that one or you’ve finished the balloon tourist achievement. The chests are not daily.
I can’t say the exact reason, but many in my guild have noted the eastern balloon in Queensdale has a chest that is already open when you get to it. It was only the 4th tower I’d visited, so I know I had not been there before and had not finished the achievement.
I am hoping there are enough non-bugged chests to complete the achievement, but I know for that one in Queensdale at least, something is wrong.
Still bugged at 4/5. Guessing at this point nothing will be done before the end of the Bazaar.
I have put in a bug report on this as well, but since it has been this way for at least 5 days now, I’ll post it here, too, just in case.
The event at the Bazaar where you have to subdue br fight instigators has been stuck at 4/5 since Friday July 26. There is no 5th instigator, so no way to end the event.
It would not be so annoying except whenever you want to be in the area, the fighting patrons hit and stun you.
Evon Gnashblade is a conniving monopolist and radical capitalist who essentially controls the entire market. Up until now, his method of making change has been all through underhanded business practices.
But then, what can you expect from a sneaky and super wealthy charr? ((Oooo, this is fun! ^^))
A vote for #TeamKiel is a vote for the betterment of Tyria!
Your argument against Gnashblade is invalid. We all know he is a “conniving monopolist and radical capitalist”. Who better to have on the Captain’s Council right where you can see him?
Sure, he will be looking to increase his wealth, but he is a smart charr who knows that his own success is tied to the success of Lion’s Arch. Also, if there are disagreements over some decisions, isn’t that the purpose of the Council? We want members with different views to get a better discussion. (If you try to claim Gnashblade can just buy votes, well, then he could do that now couldn’t he? If your Council is that corrupt already, you have more troubles than just a business-minded charr.)
Not to mention he has chosen to back fractal research that could be very important. Look at Abaddon’s history and how much he has affected the shaping of Tyria (literally and figuratively). Knowing more about the moment in time when he was defeated by the other gods will be of more use than some asuran experiment gone awry. I mean, those “geniuses” are always blowing up one thing or another.
Vote Gnashblade for a more prosperous Lion’s Arch (BLTC is part of Lion’s Arch, kinda
). Vote Gnashblade for proper fractal research priorities.
Guild Wars 2 players are permitted to use macros as long as the macros are programmed with a 1 key for 1 function protocol.
1. This means that if you program a macro, it must require one keystroke per action. You may not program a single key to perform multiple functions.
2. For example, if you Press A and it results in the casting of a single skill, you’re ok. If you Press A and it casts multiple spells, you’re not ok.Seems like it’s perfectly valid. You’ve just bound the “area loot” button to a macro instead of a spell or skill.
From my understanding of the original question, though, the problem would be that the player is NOT pressing any keys. The macro would be running all on its own. That is the part not allowed.
I have been reluctant to do ANY of the personal story with friends or guildies because of this “bug”. It is possibly one of the most devastating things that can happen to someone who cares about their character’s story and background since ArenaNet has said there is no way they can reset back to what you had.
So, if I can’t take over son’s account, can I buy a second account for my own personal use. It would still be “one owner but more than one account”.
My understanding of it is that you are permitted to have multiple accounts, although in this case, since the first account now belongs to your son, you would still have only one account in ANet’s eyes. (Seems rather complicated that the first account has to be in your name for the legal agreement, though…or is ANet saying it should have been in your son’s name? In which case, how does that work with the legal agreements? So confused .)
How exactly all this works I don’t know. The restrictions on the account access when it comes to parents/guardians and minor children seem to limit the access a parent/guardian has to monitor that child’s activity. Given these restrictions and the (I think) lack of any parental controls, I probably would not let a child play the game. I would find myself in a position where I was forced to bend or break the EULA and that is not something I want to do.
Good luck with your account. GW2 will (I hope) be around for quite some time, so maybe your son will come back to the game eventually and take up that account again to play alongside you.
Read the second of JS’s posts. It leaves some questions doesn’t it? Technically the numbers may not have changed but it leaves open the unswered part of his response as to what DID change. It is this type of half-communication approach that leaves doubts in the minds of the players and, accordingly, ANet has only themselves to blame for fueling the “conspiracy” theorists……again.
While I could agree that ANet is not always clear in communication and causes some of their own issues, in this case, I think any conspiracy theorists are just trying to read more into things than is there.
His first post tried to make clear that nothing changed.
Second post was to say that actual numbers were checked and that he wasn’t just going on “we didn’t change anything on purpose”.
Third post was to assure people that any changes would be in the patch notes.
Seems pretty clear to me at that point.
Why not allow both? Seems like a pretty simple solution.
I was going to ask the same. Seems the calculation can be done both ways.
I can, however, see where putting in a number of gems and being charged more than is on the screen would be more annoying than putting in a money amount and getting less gems than you think.
The thing that gets me is how quickly the numbers change. Is there any period when the exchange is stable, or is it recalculated every second like it sometimes seems?
I think that’s a good idea but I want to know if it’s possible we can see in the future a Test Server or something like that. This is a very common thing in other games (especially in MMOs) and I think it would help you guys a lot giving nice feedback before launching something on live servers.
If they already have an Alpha and are open to putting some types of content on the live servers for feedback, I’m not sure where a separate Beta or Test Server program would benefit anyone.
Plus, while public betas can be fun, I have seen them have adverse effects. Some players in the beta can get burned out on the content more quickly and, for me, new content feels less new by the time it goes “live”.
To make sure it is not adding to any confusion, Support has a separate account/password system from the game. So having that tell you your game password is incorrect when you login is normal (unless you made a support account and gave it the same password, which I would not recommend).
(edited by Tanek.5983)
It resets when the dailies reset. However make sure you create the instance AFTER the reset. Example: if your reset is at 8pm, and you enter at 7:50, and finish at 8:15, you will not get credit. You would have to enter after 8.
Weird, I did it last night, once I seen my dailies changed on my screen and I didnt get a chest in the first zone. Something is wrong or something… I dunno..
Just because I know it can do weird things to the daily display, did you make sure the time/timezone on your computer clock is correct?
Well you clearly are afraid of negative comments if I can receive this from a mod:
Posts that are rude, condescending, and/or inflammatory are not allowed. While it may not have been your intention to come across as such, please be careful to avoid accidentally offending anyone in the future. Be aware the nuances and intent of verbal messages are often lost in the written word.
I like how the last sentence contradicts the whole point of the infraction lol. They state that they might not know what I’m talking about, but they’re still going to punish me anyways. Zzzz… GMs clearly just like to drop the ban hammer.
That does not say they are “afraid of negative comments”. Nor does anything in there contradict. It says they want people to be aware that posting rude or inflammatory comments is not allowed. And that while it may not have been your intention to come across that way, intent does not matter as much as content when it comes to text on a forum. They may not know your intent, so can only judge based on what is written.
That said, it is also frowned upon to discuss forum moderation. You should contact them directly if you think something was done in error.
If you have negative feedback for anything, including the SAB, please feel free to post it, but do so in a civil manner. Negative does not have to mean rude. Thanks!
In addition, I do agree that some other aspects of the game could use a bit of tender loving care, such as Southsun Cove. Make some new heart quests there that deal with the Karka-Consortium business a bit more perhaps. Or some additional dynamic events, would also be nice.
I am hoping that with the refugee situation tying in to Southsun, we might see some activity therefollowing the next Flame & Frost update.
At this point, I’d side with your intuition.
Never know what might change in the future, but I doubt you will see them on sale separately in the gem store this month.
yeah, they are active for about 2-3 seconds but can’t get on top of them in the first place.
There is a small rock to the right as you enter the cave. Start on there and jump to the smaller, closer spout. Then to the larger spout and from there either to the ledge on the right and ahead, or twist around and jump to the ledge to the left and a little behind.
Watch the timing pattern of the spouts. They will alternate on and off, then both off and both on. You can either time it to jump when both are on, or you can jump to the small spout first and leave it just as the larger is coming back up. Both ways have pros and cons.
As for which ledge, I have had more luck getting to the one that is to the left and a bit behind. It may be a harder initial jump, but for some reason, I have done better than with the other.
Good luck
The problem with removing it from jumping puzzles is that some puzzles specifically use the mechanic as part of the challenge. I suppose you can have it replaced by some other method of slowing the player and shortening jumps, but I would not want to see it go away entirely.
I don’t remember encountering any puzzles that do this, and I have completed every jumping challenge in the game (except for guild puzzles).
I did however notice several jumping puzzles that make their jumps impossible to do due to this mechanic, probably unintentionally. For example, Griffonrook Run relies entirely on avoiding the griffons and not getting hit. But sometimes the game still assumes you are in combat, thus decreasing how far you jump, and making the jump impossible. I have died so many times because of this.
Hmm. I have not done that one yet. I’ll have to put it on my search list.
One I was thinking of that uses combat and other slows on purpose is Goemm’s Lab. It may be that others are unintentionally harder due to the mechanic.
To get back closer to topic, though, I do think slowing a character in combat should stay outside the SAB. Inside, maybe they will find ways to smooth it out a bit for a future release.
As much as I like the game and am in no danger of leaving it, I have to agree that the personal story bugs are devastating when they happen to a character.
Missing part of the story, having your choices changed right out from under you, and having no way at all to fix it is damaging two of the things I hold most important in the game. Being able to play with others, and being able to experience the personal story (with all your choices) beginning to end.
Because of bugs like this, I have been afraid to do the Story any way other than solo. It should not have to be like that.
I know there are currently no tools to fix things for someone affected by this bug, but is it something we can hope for soon? Either that, or the bugs need to be fixed so we can play without worrying that characters and stories we spend so much time on won’t be taken from us in a split second by a glitch.
Thank you.
(edited by Tanek.5983)
all this and more…like u cant finish Black Citadel exploration cose of the Living Story, point of interests inside Command Core, u simply cant get to the one cose of LS, u will be pushed away/knocked back. I hope u gona fix that.
The point is only blocked until you get past that bit of the story. Then it is back as it was unless you replay the content.
I swear that I’ve gotten multiple monthly credit for doing the same jumping puzzle in LA. I’ve done it over multiple days though. The puzzle chests reset with the daily achievements. I’m away from home now, but I’ll try to remember to confirm this tonight.
It may have worked like that in the past, but I can confirm that the monthly for April requires you complete 12 different puzzles.
The combat mode slow down should be removed from the entire game, not just SAB. It is an extremely frustrating mechanic, that makes any jumping puzzle that contains enemies far more frustrating than it needs to be.
I don’t even understand what the purpose of combat slowdown is. But I’m glad you managed to implement a work around for SAB. Now for the rest of the game.
Alternatively, a buff that disables it near any PVE jumping puzzles would also be a welcome addition.
The problem with removing it from jumping puzzles is that some puzzles specifically use the mechanic as part of the challenge. I suppose you can have it replaced by some other method of slowing the player and shortening jumps, but I would not want to see it go away entirely.
From that screen, unless I am missing something, it could be inferred that you don’t have World 1, Zone 3 complete. If you do, in fact, have both achievements for Zone 3 (not shown in the portion of the panel in this screenshot), then report it as a bug and maybe open a ticket. (I don’t know they would be able to change anything for your account, but at least they can try to see what happened.)
Good luck.
Nothing is certain, but I’m pretty sure these ones will only be around for this month.
O.O
All of a sudden, my list of things to do got much longer.
That’s how we did our holiday events. So I expect we’ll do the same thing here.
If there is any question about it at all, don’t give the procrastinators hope. They will turn on you like a pack of undead wolves if/when that vendor is gone.
Keep them in an invisible bag. That way, they should not be auto-banked when you deposit collectibles through the gear icon.
I don’t think there is a way for us to change the email address on our own. If you put in a support ticket, they should be able to take care of it, though.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/account/E-mail-Change-Questions-merged
I say add a counter but put it only in infantile mode
This I would support.
The remainder of your post was unnecessarily antagonistic, though. You may have a valid opinion in there, but you mask it well with insults.
