Curious about the Sylvari NPE

I’ve always thought their first armor set should be a more plantlike armor. They’ve just awoken and they should have armor that is grown from their bodies.

Isn’t there something in the settings that does that? try looking in the graphics settings. but I think it might be lowering your graphic settings. I know on my last computer where I had to have lower graphic options there was no pulse. But on my new pc it pulses. I like it. Of course you can dim the glow completely if you find it distracting.

But I agree that an option to maintain glow would be cool.

Because in GW1 maps were instanced which meant everyone had exactly the same amount of chance to get the rare pets. In GW2 you’re proposing having one pet occasionally somewhere on the map which only ONE person would be able to get. People would just end up camping or finding ways to make sure their guild members got it.

With rare armours – all of them are easily attainable in game, you can either work towards crafting them or buy them off the TP. What you’re proposing has no guaranteed way for people to get it.

Why does it have to work that way? Can’t they just spawn somewhere that isn’t particularly easy to get to, or after a quest you have access to an area where you can tame one? I don’t see why they can’t be given away as a reward in some shape of form.

I agree. There are “cheats” to help, though they are clumsy. You can put yourself by a wall or tree etc and pan your camera until it hits a small sweet spot where it zooms in but doesn’t get so close as to make you transparent with floating teeth. You can work with a friend to exchange screens where you stand near each other and pan until the other person is filling your view.

I’d love to be able to easily zoom in to see the tweed on my Noble’s Coat, or the etching on my hair accessory. The textures in this game are so beautiful and so hard to see thanks to the camera limitations.

I know! The character detail is so amazing it’s such a shame I can’t get a close up look at them without clumsily using the scenery to “push” the camera in. And it would be easy to implement and doesn’t change any gameplay mechanics. Also would be useful on the armour dye screen to at least be able to zoom in on the face!

Right let me paint a picture. You’ve spent time energy and maybe even real money on your little virtual self. They have importance to you. You’ve picked out the colour scheme, fought for the armour, unlocked loads of dyes, found the perfect hair (leaves, scalp?).

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to zoom in closely to admire them?

Maybe on the character select screen? Or on the armour choosing screen? Just some way to look at all the tiny detail there is?

Fable a offline RPG had this feature to see how your character was progressing.

I’m sure people who write character fictions would love to be able to have proper character portraits up close? And people lev to show off their alter egos!

I know it’s a silly idea but it wouldn’t take much to implement.

Is it just me who feels that the zoom function doesn’t let us get close enough to our characters?

The idea of GW2 is that everything is accessible to EVERYBODY.
This kind of goes against that. Compare it to something like legendary weapons or ascended armour – everyone has the ability to get them, it just takes time or gold. What you’re suggesting is too dependant on luck, chance and other variables.

Not really, it wouldn’t be any different than rare armour sets.

Sylvari have the external appearance of sexual organs without the function of them. They cannot have children because the internal workings do not work. Even if they could have children they are plants and Norn are mammals, plants do not reproduce in a way that mammalian reproduction could identify. The physiology is just too different. In our world for two different species to produce viable offspring then they need to be very closely related such as a horse and a donkey to create a mule.

Some of the best fitting armor on male Sylvari. :o All hail the mighty pants that aren’t too big. Just check out that awesome normal-sized butt. Why can’t all armor be like that, especially Medium? They must of made that armor before they decided to swap everything to a Sylvari-unfriendly mesh.

~meow.

The problem is that very few non-light armors look good AND work with our proportions. The cultural armors are some of the only armors that properly fit us.

unless you have the biggest male body type……then oversized shoulderpads and overblown buttcapes (see the skirt effect thread) will be your dearest friends. Hell this is the reason i forgone buttcapes completely for my mesmer and got the AC light pants instead (i had only 2 options for buttcapeless pants anyways)

I’m actually want real robes in game, wizards must wear robes and pointy hats.

I’d love a pointy hat for my Necro. :O

Is he your necro? That doesn’t look like light armour, what make is that?

The pic I posted was my Guardian~ He’s using Seraph chest and HoM heavy and Radiant helmet, and CoF shoulders. It’s probably my favorite armor set-up on Sylvari.

This ones my Necro, although he’s wearing TA shoulders. :o
and my Thief~ but he wears cultural+human. It’s extremely difficult to dress a Medium armor tier male Sylvari when 99% of it doesn’t fit correctly. CM and AC body are 2 that do.

Looking at your guardian makes me want to make another Sylvari male! I don’t have any that use heavy armour… I know what I’m doing tonight! Designing a male heavy tree man!

I saved a makeover kit just for the male face from the live stream and I’m not disappointed one bit! They all have their charms and although I admit 2 male faces with no nose is a bit much they both look well placed. Unusual and controversial it seems the noseless faces seem to be a love them or hate them type thing with few people on the fence.

But when they are designed they are designed knowing that some people will love them and some will hate them. I think they are good additions to the roster and add a lot more choice. Keep up the good work

Are we ever going to see the sylvari face that was presented in Kristen’s live stream or was that just a side project she was working on? I’m saving my last makeover kit for this! I know it’s not high priority but I’m refusing to level up my sylvari ranger until I get this face! I did kind of hope that it would be released with the new hair we received :-/

Anyone else like the face she showed off in the live stream?

I am under the impression that asurans warp into existence. No sex. Just a catalytic process between two synergistic temporal fields that vibrate eachother until reality splits open and BOOM… a distressed asuran prodigy craving nutritional sustenance.

On topic: For a 25 year old race, I doubt they would anything but open because if you think about it, socially acceptable behavior is part of one’s culture to a point. Sylvari, are extremely new and do not have a set culture in annex, an intricate set of social guidelines.

I did think about that. I wonder if the mother tree would have any views on it. I mean if her children do have romantic relations with other races then I suppose it would actually help solidify their position amongst the other races.

Sylvari relationships with other races

Posted by: Toli Rosca.9041

We know that the Sylvari are pan-sexual and that gender roles among the Sylvari are non existent. In fact they even view other races gender views as being a bit backward.

We know that the Sylvari don’t procreate in the traditional sense and that they are born as fruit of the mother tree. And we also know that cross-breeding and hybrids don’t exist (although human/norn has been disputed)

And we have been lead to believe that Sylvari are anatomically correct with working… Ah… Plumbing.

So all that aside what do you think Sylvari would make of having relationships with any of the other species.

Some Sylvari you talk to in game come across almost xenophobic pointing out the difference between Sylvari and the other mammalian species of Tyria.

Some are much more friendly towards other species working with them closely.

Most are just curious of the world around them.

Would anyone actually oppose a human and a Sylvari having a monogamous relationship?

What if it was a Human male with a Sylvari male? I mean Sylvari wouldn’t even consider the gender implications but Human society might not be so welcoming.

So how do you think interspecies relations are received on Tyria?

Body Physique Limitations

Posted by: Toli Rosca.9041

Toli Rosca.9041

So I’ve been creating a lot of sylvari characters lately, and I noticed that there are only 5 different physique shapes [male and female], compared to the human’s 10.

Don’t start looking at other options then. Humans have double the number of hair styles as well. All the non-human races have significantly less customization options, which makes me feel there is a distinct human bias.

However, I am glad I was able to make a female sylvari physique. with a breast size closer to a B-cup. It made me so happy.

Therefore, having more options for people who want larger characters would be great too. More diversity!

Sylvari get great skin colour and hair colour customisation, plus we have extra ear customisation, asura also have ear customisation and charr have ear and horn customisation, human and norn pretty much just have face and hair. You can’t really make a human or norn look much different from the other and the hair colour option is much more limited. I would say sylvari have equal level of customisation with the fact that by using colours creatively sylvari all look reasonably unique. I mean you can’t have a green skinned human with a lavender coloured Mohawk, but you can with a sylvari.

Beauty is in the eye of beholder.

That depends on what type of beauty we are talking about.

There are two types of beauty that humans recognize, universal beauty and learned beauty (which varies from culture to culture, locality to locality and generation to generation).

Generally video game characters, who need to appeal to a wide global audience, are created according to precepts regarding universal beauty and not learned beauty.

This is the thing though, they can’t cater to everyone and there are many people, such as myself who don’t think there is anything wrong with the current line up of faces, I would just like more options.

And fitting in with the game lore they are supposed to be a plants take on humans so it makes sense they’re form is close to that of a human.

I really like all the Sylvari hairstyles except for the mushroom head style which simply doesn’t make any sense at all because mushrooms are fungus and denote a plant that is rotting and dying and likely to infect and destroy all its sister plants.

As for the faces, most of them are simply unacceptible as they just have weird components that don’t really make any sense. They don’t so much look like a cross between a human face and a plant as they look like an actor had a really bad makeup job. Some of the faces even look like they belong to different animals which is completely the wrong look.

Then you have Trahearne’s face which looks like the next Lionsgate heart throb. except for the weird floating hair.

Then I would really suggest the Sylvari aren’t the race for you to play then.

I’ll have you know that almost of all my characters are Sylvari and I love them to death. My problem isn’t that Sylvari are plants that were made to look like humans, but that some of the faces are just ridiculous and unnecessarily ugly. They don’t look like a cross between a human face and a palnt but a human with a bad costume makeup job as I already said. It’s pretty clear that Sylvari are meant to be standins for elves as they have most of the same qualities that we associate with MMO elves: they are very slender, they are very intune with nature especially plants and trees, they live in a forest home, they are mystical in nature and very peaceful, and they are aesthetically pleasing and generally all quite beautiful.

That’s what makes the faces with the ugly components so antithetical with every other part of the Sylvari design. Those parts don’t serve the purpose of making you “Oh yeah Sylvari are really plants!” rather they serve to make you go “what the heck was the artist thinking!?”

Beauty is in the eye of beholder.

What is the flower back item? I’ve seen it loads of time.

And I agree, my Rangers new flower bud hair clips through his T3 Medium shoulder guards. Only slightly but its enough to annoy me

Unfortunatly with so many different styles and combinations it would be near on impossible for the guys who design them all to make it so that none of them clip what so ever, and we as Sylvari players have it much better than those who play Asura who… apparently clip through almost all the amour.

its just a case compromise, and finding a level of clipping you can tolerate and finding alternate armour styles that give a similar impression to what you’re after.

I personally think most of the faces are cool, they fit in with the “trees interpretation of a face” theme. Some are more human looking and elegant to please those that so wish a human looking Sylvari, some are more tree and bark/plant like to please those that so wish a more nature ‘tree ent’ style Sylvari.

And the modifier sliders do add a touch of personality to each face if you have the patience to tinker around with them.

I mean really what do you want from them? what would be your idea sylvari face? I’m really happy with my Sylvari characters, I just want that one face from the live video stream to make my Sylvari Ranger complete!

What about a long, seaweed style hair? Maybe have some of it drape over the shoulder, also. There are lots of different types of seaweed, also. It could also potentially give an aquatic plant-type look. Though I’m not sure that would make sense given they’re fruit of a land-dwelling tree.

I remember during a interview, might have even been the live feed about sylvari hair but it was said that they were focusing on Forrest style plants as the sylvari come from a tree and seaweed would be out of place. But I think that would be cool

Surely it wouldn’t be difficult to re-skin some of the hair styles to make them use less of the skin colour and make them a separate hair, similar to how the skin texture can be leafy or barky but it still uses the same model? Then everyone is happy?

So maybe a seperate version of the flower bud hair that uses the same model but has a different texture over it that doesn’t use so much skin tone? This could be done to some of the other styles as well?

I personally think grass is a bit of a cop-out and worry it could end up looking like retextured human hair. Although I also admit that from a ‘lore’ point of view a tree making creatures to look like humans would probably use grass as it could be styled similar to human hair.

I’d like to see more flowers and tree like hair, maybe evergreen trees for inspiration or at least a more filled out version of the tree stump style we already have. I did see a drawing of someone who used dandelion fluff to make a semi stylised Afro which was cool.

Also I really like the medium armour cultural helms as they look a little emo style like hair brushed over the face almost, and I like the idea of a few large leaf type plates giving the illusion of hair instead of lots of little leaves.

I love the new leaf hair because… It’s not just leaf hair, it’s a flower! Massive flower as hair! It’s so unusual and at home. I don’t like how it uses so much of my characters skin colour though, but if you play around with the red skin tones then there is actually a lot of tone and depth to it, colours that are bright wash out the hidden depth of the leaves. But I did have to change my whole colour scheme to make it look awesome though.
