Every class can AoE (some better than others) and every class can support (in different ways). You say you need a Guardian for support and heals, why not a Necromancer to weaken the mobs into paste using conditions? Or a Mesmer who can remove, steal and magnify boons the team already has?

that’s only true in theory. in practice some classes have better synergy then others.

i myself play a guardian and have indeed found that having healing oriented elementalist is a wonderful thing. and so is having a mesmer – for time warp.

it can’t be denied that guardian/elementalist/warrior/mesmer make up a kind of a “dream team”. all too often are necromancers and rangers (and sometimes even thieves) are left out shimmering in the cold when it comes to “purrrfect composition for high fractals”.

They definitely need to think these updates through before releasing them like this. I always thought spirit weapons were nice, unique utility skills for the Guardian that would eventually be made useful to enough to have a build that could revolve around their usage. Unfortunately, what they’ve done is made them completely useless as well as any traits associated with spirit weapons, which kills off a lot of build diversity and experimentation. I hope they realize that nerfing things into oblivion is not a proper way to balance the game.

very well put.
making skills useless is not balance. that just takes away diversity from the game making already limited choices even more limited.

Oki, I’m gonna link the blog with the symmetrical faces. If you wanna go to the perception of beauty: what is considered to be beautifull is a natural best approximation to symmetry which is still very different from an actual symmetry. Not talking about healthiness…

http://www.whudat.de/echoism-fotoset-symmetrischer-gesichter-8-bilder/

the reason those faces look odd is because people chosen had very unsymmetrical faces to begin with, not to mention the lightning is uneven making photoshoped pictures suffer from odd angles and shadows.

i’m not sure if it is because people were not experienced enough (since now you cna join any level really) or is it because of increased dificulty but i am not enjoying myself at all any more.

My RL-ears are also at a slightly different position. I should write my mum a bugreport.

Nah honestly human faces in RL are also never exactely symetric. There were some computer-generated photographs showing absolutely symetrical faces and they look ultimately weird. They posed the ears at slightly different positions to make the faces look more natural, I think.

actually, people always strive for maximum symmetry in faces and what not because symmetry is a sign of genetic healthiness.

asura who’s ears are too lop-sided is not a very good genetic specimen

In my opinion, no armor (of any archetype) looks good on Asura. It’s too condensed and lacks the detail that the larger races would have in the same armor

The exception would be the Asura culture armor, and an Asura in culture armor looks cooler than any other race in any armor – especially the light and heavy sets.

Sorry for no pics, but if you do a little research you can see what their culture armor looks like.

imo asuran cultural heavy armor is just ugly and “transformer-like”. it lacks the detail that light and medium armor has

i twisted nothing. you claim we don’t know the limit of a biological cell, but we do. it does not matter what kind of creature it is, on a cellular level they all function in the similar way and have the same limitations.

You twisted my arguement to infer that I made a claim of infinite resources. that was completly false. We absolutly do not know the full limit of the human cell. That is a huge lie. And going back to the arguement that spawened this tangent, chimps and humans differ in connectivity. So…….

Also, cells function very diffrently on Tyria as I’ve shown with the seed plants.

humans as far as i know came from another continent but not from another planet. so your point is moot.

Seedplants automatically mean my point is not moot no matter where they come from but no, they were brought by the gods from the mist. Either way, your point about them needing to be similar is wrong. Which makes your point moot.

and once again – “it’s just magic!” is the most lazy argument ever made, and no asura with at least a shed of self respect would accept it!

seed plants proves magic may play a part but i’ve made more than just the magic arguement. Just because magic is involved doesn’t make it the totality of the arguement. In fact, magic will probably be involved in alot of things, being that it is a real force in Tyria. Any true Asura would know that, given the early lessons of metamagic classes and a whole culture of magitech and Eternal Alchemy.

you, sir, don’t even bother to understand what i’m saying.

i never claimed you said anything about infinite resources. what i was trying to get through your head is the fact that cells would require more resources then they can provide. we know this from real life biology.
chimps and humans may differ in connectivity but connections can only be made in so many ways. if you look at biological structures such as intestines you will see that a blood supply for an intestine of a dog is almost identical to that of a chimp. this is…biology!
if anet insists on asura being mammals then we have NO CHOICE but to treat them as being fairly similar to humans and norns because that’s the definition of a mammal is. in order to be classified as a mammal one has to be fairly biologically close to those mammals, as opposed to lets say… reptiles.

as for “magic” – as far as i know there are “magical” and “non-magical” creatures in tyria, with races being pretty much non-magical in nature, maybe except sylvari.

seeing as sylvari are obviously not mammals i can’t understand why you would even bring seeds into this argument.
sure, lets for the argument’s sake say sylvari are magical unicorns. but that doesn’t change biology of mammals.

anet decided that asura are mammals so no “it’s magic” argument applies to them. stop it.

what you’re saying doesn’t even make sense because you obviously don’t know much about biology.
a cell is a cell. no matter where it is – in a human, a monkey, a plant… if it’s alive on this earth it has similar limitations (and as far as i know asuras did not come through a membrane from another world, they evolved on tyria right next to skritt, humans, norns and everyone else).

a biological cell is not capable of storing and processing infinite amount of resources because membrane itself will limit osmosis and diffusion.

so you can’t just say “asuras are alien biology does not apply to them” or “lol, it’s magic!”.

i’m sorry but that just does not work for me.

“We don’t know the limit of human connections, let alone the limit of asura.” : Is what I said.

I know enough to know what humanity doesn’t know yet. i never made a claim or even implied anything about infinite amount of rescources. So whatever works for you, go with it. just don’t try to twist my arguement beyond recogniziation in order to create the illusion of credibility for yourself. Becasue I’ll call you on it.

btw: Humans are the ones from another world. brought here by the gods. Nothing even implies asura and humans are from the same world.

edit: Even if we did know the exact limits of cellular activity, Sylvari seedplants get planted, sprout, grow and spend incredible amounts of energy damaging oponents in seconds. Chances are, magic does play a factor in at least some cellular activity.

i twisted nothing. you claim we don’t know the limit of a biological cell, but we do. it does not matter what kind of creature it is, on a cellular level they all function in the similar way and have the same limitations.

There’s one fact that you guys are grievously overlooking: Asura are not human. Some comparisons can be made due to similarities but you also have to acknowledge that they are radically different from humans so it’s highly likely that they grow and have evolved in a radically different way.

For instance, females may still have mammary glands but they just don’t protrude from their chests like human females do. One theory is they may have evolved to sunk into their chest cavity instead as living in caves and often ride inside of golems would make protrusions of any kind a hindrance. Also, the mammary glands wouldn’t need to be anywhere near as big as a human because the Asura are so small. Plus, their culture clearly values intelligence than physical appearance. It’s possible that a bigger head is far more appealing than bigger breasts. That may be why they are also fixated on ears.

You also have to consider that technology is so ingrained in the Asura culture that it possibly has influenced their evolution. Consider the gates. Teleporting matter across any distance of space is still decades if not a full century ahead of our present level of understanding. We’ve just learned how to teleport energy a few years ago. However, it’s so common to the Asura that it has spread well beyond their political borders and is commercially available at a ridiculously low cost. (Well, low considering what the maintenance for it all must be.) If they’ve had such a complex level of tech just laying about everywhere, can you imagine how long they’ve been riding inside of golems? And that’s something we can practically do today. Their current size may even be to better facilitate being inside vehicles.

Anyway, the tl:dr version is, Asura aren’t human so you can’t assume that similarities run deeper than they appear.

well, 1st of all – even if they are not humans they have still evolved on the same planet. meaning they are far more similar then dissimilar.
much in the same way how on our own earth species share similar traits even being millions of years apart.

technology is all well and good but somewhere some time there had to be wild caveman-like asuras out there who had no technology and who had to give birth in good old fashioned way before they even knew what fire was…
..so this brings us back to the question no.1… how DOES one pass a cranium this large through a birth canal so small?

my best guess is that anet devs are simply incompetent and they made a race purely with aesthetics in mind, forgetting all about biological plausibility. because, really, all they had to do is make heads smaller, and no one would have asked questions at all……

there is still a very finite amount of connections a brain can manage.
this is also one of the reasons that humans don’t seem to be getting any smarter then they already are – we are limited by our biology in that neurons can only make so many different connections.
also, there’s an issue of power supply. a biological cell can carry a finite amount of resources.
our own braisn already consume 20% of resources.
if asuran brain consumes lets say 30%, not only would it stall physical growth, it would stall the growth of brain itself….

We don’t know the limit of human connections, let alone the limit of asura. We may be limited by our biology but asura aren’t. They are limited by their own unknown biology the same way chimps and humans have diffrent limits. You bring to mind an image of a chimp arguing with another that humans can’t have as rapid an establishment of connections that humans have becasue chimps don’t have that capability.

We also know that asura eat "brain food’ and expect noticible results from just one meal.

if asuran brain consumes lets say 30%, not only would it stall physical growth….

think about that :P

Humans have bigger brains than chimps during the foetal stage but chimps perform better at IQ tests during the first 2 years of life. Then the chimp mental potential plateaus and humans surpass them. chimps also develope into adulthood sooner.

“What’s really unique about us is that our brains experience rapid establishment of connectivity in the first two years of life,” said Chet Sherwood, an evolutionary neuroscientist at George Washington University, who was not involved in the study. “That probably helps to explain why those first few years of human life are so critical to set us on the course to language acquisition, cultural knowledge and all those things that make us human.” http://www.livescience.com/25655-chimp-brains-reveal-human-intelligence.html

So asura may experiance extremely rapid establishment of connectivity.

as a high level fractalist myself i am well aware that glass cannoning doesn’t work beyond ordinary dungeons.

Why would you do anything but glass cannon beyond fractal 50? Everything 60+ will 1-shot down you either way, “trash” included. It’s best to do the most damage you can in hopes that you kill the enemy before you yourself were downed. (Guardians are actually more capable at building full glass and surviving anyhow, except to maybe Mesmers)

well that’s not really true. i know plenty of groups that build for support in high level fractals.

Not to mention 8k focus shield explosions and 10k whirling wraths. It’s not quite glass warrior output, but it is frightening.

It’s more than possible. As a full glass you can easily do 12-13k with ww with right pots.

You haven’t seen good guardians. In pvp, it’s a bit difficult to hit with scepter perhaps, but not in pve. It’s very easy for a guardian to hit 3k on auto attack with scepter, which is stronger and faster than my dps ranger’s long bow auto attack, then there’s smite which chews through immobile targets.

3k auto attack with scepter? you must be dreaming.
3k is what i do with my GS. my scepter does 300dmg per attack, up to 500 if i’m wearing berzerkers.

you can’t take away guardian’s shields and walls because guardians trully do lack in ranged dps and have no ranged aoe abilities.

also, shield and wall are great counterparts to thief’s refuge and can be used in a similar manner.

well that was an odd thing to include for a casual conversation.

but it doesn’t prove anything. i stand by my statement that female asuras are not anatomically equipped for child baring in the same manner as humans. they could only do it as marsupials at best.

I would like to know your logic behind that. Progeny are the asura equivalent of children (ie: 4 to 12 years old). Within the two years of birth, Human babies can double in size, and whats stopping Asuran infants from doing the same thing? Just because Anet chose not to upload the pixels for certain anatomy that is believed to be “necessary” for similar childbearing to humans doesn’t mean it isn’t there. ( I don’t want to seem confrontational, I was just stating the logic behind my own thinking)

because the size of your cranium at birth determines how long it will take for brain to develop into adulthood.
smaller brain at birth = dumber babies = longer childhood
this is already obvious in human children who take disproportionaly long time to develop into adults, when compared to other mammals.

an elephant can live to be over 70 years old, but they reach adulthood at the age of 10.
humans have a similar life span but they reach full adulthood at ages between 18 and 25.
this is directly related to the brain size on the day of birth.

so there is no way asura could be geniuses at the age of 4. their brains simply would lack development power for that just yet.

Human children sometimes are born with cone-shaped heads since their head is so soft, it deforms during the birthing process.

Since Asura have such strong brains, maybe their heads are really ‘gummy’ so they can deform more at that stage. Furthermore, Asura may even have developed ‘baby helmets’ to help reform the shape of the baby’s head to something more attractive as they develop in the first few weeks.

there is no need for helmets, gravity does it’s trick all by itself.

however, there is a limit how much a tissue can stretch and so mother can only give birth to a head that’s only so large. else she risks massive internal ripping, bleeding and even death.

Asuran Reproduction

Posted by: Twill.6217

Twill.6217

Basically what Oglaf said. Goodness knows poor Anet would be swamped with claims of it being ‘perverted’ despite nothing on the chests to suggests nipples or anything they need to hide.

it’s about the race being too child-like, and god forbid some pervert might see that breastless child-sized asura!

anyway, back to the topic.

yes, the asuran children we encounter are most likely a few years old, however, the cranium can not possibly develop at a much faster phase then the rest of the body. it would not be favoured by evolution due to a lack of balance and coordination such a body would experience.

if you look at human children you will see that a newborn’s head is 1/4 of it’s entire body. this is because cranium is the most difficult body part to grow, it takes the longest and so children must come with the maximum head size they can get away with.
by the time you’re an adult the head/body ratio is down to 1/8 because your head can’t possibly catch up with such growth.
there’s also other factors involved: such as balance. a person with a too large a head relative to his/her body would have a hard time running and getting away from danger.

so by comparing development of human children to asuran children one can presume that head/body ratio was even larger at birth then it is a few years later in school.

and so i still say they can not possibly give life birth unless in the same manner as marsupials.
but then… where’s the pouch?

Asuran Reproduction

Also, if you’ve seen the in-character model of progeny.. they are very, very small.

that’s not entirely true.

it seems that female models have a small head that i would call as “passable”, yet male child models have a huge head, half the size of their entire body. that would not be possible. no matter how “complex” you think child bearing is.

Asuran Reproduction

in Asura

Posted by: Twill.6217

Twill.6217

considering their anatomy (narrow pelvis, huge cranium) it is impossible for them to give life birth other then in the same manner as marsupials (offspring is born no bigger then a baby rat and grows in a pouch). it would be anatomically impossible to pass that large cranium through the birth canal otherwise.

however, female asuras don’t seem to possess any pouches nor anything that would remind of mammary glands.

i know anet stated asuras are mammals, however, i find it a biological impossibility since they lack any traits that make mammals into… mammals.

i like to think that asuras are essentially reptilian-like and either lay eggs or give semi-life birth. but by this time they are probably genetically engineering every single asura anyway.

it would also explain their disconnection in psychology. aka an animal that was not reared on mother’s milk will not have a deep psychological connection to his or her biological parents, essentially eliminating the need for a family as we know it.
asuras don’t seem to have families or marriages, and they put no interest in biological closeness (brothers, sisters). krewe is the only solid social structure that exists in their society and it pulls individuals based on their interests and intelect, not biological ties.

i completely support this – the size that asuran one-handers are now makes them almost invisible when dangling on the belt.

swords, daggers, scepters, pistols, maces, even focus would look so much better.

however, i see a lot of problems with this:
1) crisscrossing weapons is out of the question due to clipping issues
2) it would create a conflict between visible back item or a shield, meaning that special exceptions would have to be made so that weapons would appear as usual – at the side – if one of the two is true.

aha! so this IS just male testosterone filled issue after all! i was correct….

no, honestly, “being a whimp” is not always a bad trait in leaders. i welcome it in real-life military men. being too “whimpy” to push that shinny red nuclear warhead button is a favorable trait when it comes to survival of our species :P

get over yourself, we’re not cavemen any more. it’s not about who has the bigger stick.

What a incredible sexist remark. Only because one guy thinks a male character in a game is whimpy doesn’t mean he is a dumb caveman and it certainly doesn’t mean that every guy things that. A lady friend of mine for example doesn’t like Logan because she things he is a wuss.

I personally dislike Trahearne because he is a Mary-Sue, he comes in knows everything and everyone and every NPC loves him. I would feel the same if he was female. In fact, my most despised character in GW lore is Gwen, undoubtly female and drama queen.
Maybe there are people whose dislike is based on a characters gender, but that would be the minority. So please stop your generalization, take an example in a Norn, they never judge groups only individuals. You could learn much from that.

i think you should look up the definition of sarcasm.

Treehern with his mighty sword saladbowel didn’t strike me as the leader type. In fact he seemed like such a beta male I don’t know how he managed to stay alive in Tyria at all.

Really bad characterisation.

Firstly, Caladbolg is a real-life legendary sword, thought to be the source of the Excalibur myths no less.

Secondly, just because someone is introverted doesn’t make them unable to survive.

Being a wimp, or second guessing kills you.

Despite what you may think, it’s got nothing to do with testosterone. However, in context when dealing with leading a unified force against magic-devouring monstrosities that corrupt everything just by breathing/flying over, second guessing and lacking a spine is an issue. I mean “This isn’t going to end well” and “This won’t be a sortie, it’ll be a massacre” is -not- what you want to hear from the leader of the unified force and supposed expert on just what to do. It’s terrible for morale.

I’m beginning to think based on this post and others that you want it to be fueled by male testosterone, for whatever crazy reason.

..what? why would i want more testosterone in my games? it’s overflowing already.

i honestly welcome Trahearne the way he is. to me he is a breath of fresh air over all those fearless manly-men on white horses.

to me Trahearne just looks so… human. more human then anyone else. he doesn’t always know what to do, he can’t always “keep his cool”. and that’s perfectly fine. that’s how a normal human being would react. in fact, that’s exactly how someone who spent his life studying books, not swinging swords would react.

i think considering his origins, the character is written well. i really don’t know where the hate is coming from.

You can actually get all 3 order sets. Here’s how I did it (and yes, it still works):

-level 2 alts to level 24-26
-join the orders
-buy the sets you want on your alts
-buy white quality gear from LA vendors (on your alt)
-transmute order armor onto white vendor gear
-trade it to your main character via bank

Voila! now you have all order sets.

Enjoy

Asuran Religion?

Just because the media came up with the “clever” term god particle it does not mean that there is anything religous at particle physics…

exactly. it was just marketing. a clever marketing actually since that hype clearly helped to get the funding needed.

and higs boson has been found ^^

there’s nothing religious in anything physicists do, though some are quite fanatic about their research but that does not equal religion either.

religion is by definition believing in something without asking for any proof, science is believing/presuming in something while actively searching for proof or a lack there off.

religious rules and beliefs are rigid and set in stone, scientific beliefs are fluid. they change as new discoveries are made.

so again – no, asuras are not religious. they are purely scientific.

i know asuran lore states they prefer short sharp sounding names, but…. them being all "scientific"and “nerdy” i felt i wanted to give latin a go

ended up with a little guardian called Capreolus.

there’s just something in female asura hairdos, large eyes and the way they dodge roll that reminds me of a spooked animal getting away from the danger.

Just because something is science doesn’t mean it’s not a belief. Especially the philosophical side of science, which is often percieved as factual because it’s grouped with already proven theories, consists of educated guesses at best, and pure fantasy at worst.

and yet a belief does not equal a religion.

a child can believe in Santa Claus but no one’s going to argue he belongs to a church of Saint Claus.

a religion is more then just a collection of beliefs, it is also a set of rituals, lifestyle, permissions and taboos that are also completely based in a religious belief – a set of morality that may be different to that of “general” public.

so no, asuras do not have a religion. there’s no reason for them to. and if i remember correctly from the lore – they don’t take human gods seriously.

1- Blocked access to a large portion of dungeons. Arah is a good example of this. It requires a series of chain events to finally unlock it. This in turn requires a large group of people to do so and maintain it being open. The point of dungeons are to be a fun activity with friends. Not a waste because you have to be on at the right time when the dungeon is open because your server finally decided to open it or for that matter you spending a lot of your time you should be spending running the dungeon in just getting it open. That takes away from the fun of it really quickly.

yes, this is a great example.

making dungeons contestable is a poor design choice when it’s players vs NPCs type of conflict. this design only somewhat passes for legitimate when a dungeon is bounced between player-only factions in which case it becomes an incentive to pvp.

my suggestion is to drop contestable dungeons in their current form. if they want a big event to attract large portions of people i suggest the following:

add places of power that, while held, add a small percentage of magic find to everyone in the area and related dungeon.

everyone loves magic find

that alone could be enough to bring orr back to life and stop the frustration of seeing arah being contested.. again.
