I don’t. I want current races polished more instead, like Armor actually scaling and fitting everyone correctly. Charr need an upright stance option like GW1 Charr Shaman as well still.

Adding a new race would just make things worse.

Yes to all of this! How I wish my Charr would stand straight and have more than a small handful of good looking sets (T3, Vigil). That awkward hunch can’t be good for a Charr’s back.

It would also be nice if there were more 3D models and less shaped 2D textures.

Is GW2 the best MMO?

Labeling one MMO as the best is pretty much impossible. Identifying which MMO’s do what best is much easier. Eg; no MMO I know of can compete with Runescape when it comes to quests.

I’m not sure what GW2 does better than any other MMO.

A big issue in GW2 is that it’s a game designed without a Tank/DPS/Healer trinity yet has stats built around tank/healer/dps. Tanking stats like vitality and toughness are worthless in a game with no tank role.
What we need is a selection of stats which benefit a variety of methods by which you can actively support the team. They must be stats which are utilised by skill, not made redundant by skill like vit and toughness.
Mind you a full dps team should always be viable and faster than any other team, just harder to run with.

I take it you’re from one of the few privileged servers who kills Tequatl frequently. Having all encounters be like Tequatl would make them completely dead on my server just like Tequatl is dead on all but Desolation for EU from my experience.
“Coordination” is not the answer as we’ve tried that. Coordination is impossible when you can have 100+ people yet have, if you’re lucky, 10 who are competent/literate enough to read and follow basic instruction such as “Respawn at X waypoint when dead.”

New, instanced stuff is fine.

Don’t use the charrzooka’s in phase one. Ferry bombs instead. IIRC a charrzooka shot will hit about 1.5K damage while a bomb will hit 7-9K if thrown and double that if you run all the way up and plant it. Provided you aren’t being focussed by too much agro and are using mobility skills you can ferry the bombs quite quickly.

I wonder if they could take a page out of Dark Souls book and have blocking linked to stamina (endurance) where the amount of damage blocked is proportional to the amount of stamina lost. Stamina would recharge at a slower rate when blocking just like in Dark Souls too.
In fact perhaps you could link it to adrenaline instead of endurance.

By being tanky enough u have zero risk. Berserkers have always risk and have to use blind/reflexion skills well timed.
Berserker is NEVER easier.

If that were the case, then you wouldn’t have people complaining about pugs not pulling their weight due to ‘lack of DPS’, causing wipes because you weren’t able to kill that stacked mob before it killed you.

The lack of DPS complaint is the simplest explanation that people come up with if something fails. Yes it might be true that if that player was zerker like the rest the mob would have died however it may also be true that if that player was supportive enough to counter the extra damage taken the mob would have died just as well.
Where we have an issue is in the case that even if the player was fully supportive they still would have died. If supportive builds cannot bridge the gap the lack of DPS makes then that is the problem we have to fix.
There are two ways to solve this problem:
-Either we nerf berserker’s down to the level of the supportive player.
- Or we buff the supportive player up to the berserker’s level.
Let’s explore these two solutions:
-Say we nerf all berserker’s. You are going to kitten off a lot of people. People who’ve worked hard to equip themselves in top tier gear are going to feel like their efforts have been made pointless. You wouldn’t be happy if you feel like that 300G+ you’ve spent gearing yourself was for nothing. Second of all you’re increasing the length and difficulty of all dungeons in the game and as a result making them even less appealing. With this option you’re not only kittening people off but making content less enjoyable.
-Now let’s say we buff support. This in my opinion is the much better option. This neither frustrates people or immediately alters the content of the game. For your full DPS skilled group nothing has changed. However for a mixed group the situation is very different to before. That supportive player now not only makes up for his lack of DPS but actually more than makes up for it. His presence makes the content slightly easier and the mob dies. No-one starts yelling that he didn’t pull his weight and caused a wipe because he did pull his weight.
It is important that the more support players you add the easier content becomes in proportion to the extra time it takes as it means that the easiest but slowest method becomes full support and the hardest but fastest is full DPS, as it should be. From here you can balance the dungeon content itself to decide just how hard content should be for full DPS groups.

Tyrannus Blade.3408

So you want ANet to change the dungeon design so that you require the presence of a tank in the group? Maybe you want a healer too?

It wouldn’t be required. It should just never be EASIER to run without defensive gear than it is with it. Having one person build defensively should not make things more difficult for the other 4 zerkers in the party.

Which it doesn’t, provided that defensive player has built with party support in mind. A player built to support his team through boons and healing can actually make a fight easier with a much larger margin for error than compared with a full DPS squad.
On the other hand it is going to be harder if you run with a person built for his own personal defence. It makes perfect sense after all. With the selfless type the extra damage you take from killing the enemy slower is countered by the extra support. With the selfish type the extra damage is not countered and the berserker dies. It is foolish to think that a fight is going to be easier just because someone has built for defence if none of that defence impacts the other four members of the party.

Ultimately the difference between full zerk and a mix of zerk and defence is time, provided factors like player skill aren’t an issue. Full DPS should be faster than alternatives by definition. In many cases it may be easier to run with some defensive support but it sure as hell won’t be faster.

Ugh, this is a game where you can’t tank or heal yet has stats built around DPS, tank and healing. Of course DPS stats are always going to be better. You could remove berserker’s entirely and what will happen? Assassin meta. Remove that? Knight meta or whatever is the next best DPS option and so on and so on until all you’re left with is the most useless gear.
There is always going to be a “best” method and a “best” build for every class in the current system and it just so happens that full berserker’s DPS is the best at the moment. Good players will continue to run the best stuff while bad players will continue to run the bad stuff and complain when the good players don’t want to play with them.

What is the most hated profession?

I hate rangers the most.
Rangers can be a huge boon to any group with spotter and a 70% frost spirit but the key word is “can”. If you don’t take the effort to scrape off all the awful rangers from your group then what you’ll inevitably get is some good for nothing bearbow who does nothing but sit at max range pew-pew-pewing away with his longbow doing absolutely no damage, letting the bear agro anything you don’t want agro’d and using his knockback on cd resulting in your nicely grouped enemies being all over the place again.
I wait to see what kind of ranger is joining because if I see that 70% frost spirit and spotter buff then I’m going to love you more than many other classes if I’m the only warrior. However quite a few will kick you on sight of that paw symbol.

PVE - HELP! How do I survive?

in Warrior

Posted by: Tyrannus Blade.3408

Tyrannus Blade.3408

-Well the first thing obviously is to learn when to dodge. Bind dodge to a key that you have good access to at all times (I use shift), then it’s a case of learning the encounters you’re facing. A lot of the most dangerous attacks in this game have either very short, not very obvious, or non-existent telegraphs meaning you will need to learn what to look for before you can hope to survive them.
Another thing to take into account is that it is better to dodge early than late. For whatever reason evade frames don’t actually begin until a fraction of a second after the dodge animation begins (Getting my dodge “interrupted” is highly annoying.) while they seem to persist longer than you’d think.
-Movement is also very important and you should learn which attacks are best dodged and which can be avoided via simply moving as to not waste endurance. By rapidly strafing right and left many ranged attacks, such as the Volcanic fractal bosses arrow, will miss you provided you are far enough away. This is very useful for taking out the harpies in Uncategorized if your team lacks reflects and is forced to range.
-As a warrior you should have a mace in your offhand. The #5 skill on the mace is very useful against stacked mobs as you can knock a decent number to the floor for a couple of seconds. This has the effect of eliminating all damage from those mobs for the duration as well as frequently interrupting some of their dangerous opening moves. (Graveling leaps and Breeder hatchling spawns for example)

-Support from your team is your other huge means of defence and frequently the most important. The simplest source of this support is group DPS. Many encounters are trivialised simply by your team mulching the mobs before they can hurt you too much. Group DPS is increased by everyone using DPS builds, everyone using appropriate group DPS buffing traits and utilities (banners, frost spirit, spotter), and everyone applying boons such as might and fury as well as stacking vulnerability on mobs.
Finally a lot of damage can be avoided by the correct classes using their correct abilities. A guardians wall of reflection can be the difference between a hard encounter and a trivial one.
Ultimately your team is like a group of runners roped together, if you all run fast then you’ll run smooth with each other. If too many are too slow then they risk tripping up those who try to run ahead. Hence why useless bearbow rangers aren’t that popular.

Jumping Puzzles - Suggestions?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Tyrannus Blade.3408

Tyrannus Blade.3408

Here are things to take account when jumping:

  • If you stand still and jump you will jump ever so slightly higher than if you were running and then jumping.
  • You cannot jump nearly as far if you aren’t running before hand.
  • Swiftness is a double-edged sword. Jumping long gaps is easier while jumps requiring more precise jumping are harder. The extra speed makes it easier to overshoot and harder to stop in mid-air.
  • Learn how far off the edge your race can go before falling. They’re all different sized but all have the same collision box.
  • If you are a Charr, draw your weapon. A one handed weapon is best. This will allow you to use bipedal movement instead of the awkward quadrupedal run.
  • Charr players who are good at JP’s are badkitten. All other races are rubbish compared to them. Feel free to feel smug when you sail past an Asuran as a Charr in a JP.
  • If your class has a leap skill; use it. You can take nice shortcuts sometimes with a nicely used leap.
  • If you hit the dodge and jump buttons at the same time you’ll jump but with the speed and distance of a dodge. This is useful when you’re in combat as dodges are not affected by the speed penalty.
  • Certain classes like the warrior have targetable leaps (Hammer F1 Earthshaker) that you can use to cheat the really tricky jumps.
  • Mesmers come with insurance via the portal while warriors have a good access to swiftness, leaps and targetable leaps.
  • You can use tonics like the toy princess tonic if you need to be smaller for JP’s like Troll’s End.
  • Don’t key turn.

The armour in this game needs to be redone for races other than humans. It’s all well and good having skin wardrobes with unlockable permanent skin access to work for but if I as a Charr have just two armour sets that don’t look plain awful to choose from (T3 heavy and Vigil heavy) then the whole thing isn’t much use to me.
-Remodel and retexture armour to fit all races, especially the chunky body types.
-When remodelling them make the armour more 3 dimensional. Most pieces look like shaped 2D textures than actual armour with mass and depth. (Phalanx armour is very good example of well made chunky armour.)

A problem I’ve had before has returned. I try to load onto one of my characters in a city and I get stuck in the loading screen. The game behind the screen sounds like it has loaded but nevertheless the spinning graphic keeps spinning and the screen never vanishes to let me play.

Last time I had this bug at this severity I tried everything I could find to fix it from using -repair, to deleting the gw2.dat file (which perhaps worked once each time) among other solutions until finally I pruned MSCONFIG which brought the incidents down to levels I could just about cope with. It still happened once after leaving an instance and occasionally when zoning into any city.

Now after some inexplicable lag, where the gameplay resembled a dc without the dc yet the chat was fine, the bug is back and now my guardian is stuck in the Rata Sum loading screen.
Any more suggestions on how to fix this?

Extra info: I just had a friend stand where I thought my character is. She said that my character appears where it should despite from my point of view being stuck in a loading screen. I also could not move. So this bug involves the loading screen not disappearing and allowing me control despite the game loading behind it.

Give the ascended gear either “limited” stat swapping or full stat swapping like legendaries…or a way (a quest for instance) that would allow you to Add a stat for stat swapping.

If there were epic quests in place where you could unlock stat combinations for your gear that’d be.. awesome. That would be unbelievably awesome.

No more grind; make it about challenges.

I agree, would love to hear from Chris on this idea specifically, epic quest chains to unlock swappable item stats and new item stat combos.

This is a cool idea. Lots of logic problems to think about in regard to it. Need more time to think (-:

Chris

If I’m understanding this right then the suggestion involves the idea of one piece of gear having many possible stat combos unlocked for it which can be swapped out on the fly so you don’t need a set of gear for each build. I wonder if it would be possible to also extend this idea to include swappable sigils and runes on weapons and armour so that one set of ascended really can work for all builds with the right unlocks.

1: The gem store is more reasonable:
-Less rip-off prices (500 gems ~£5 for ONE piece of poorly made armour, 1000 gems ~£11 for ONE unlimited gathering tool, 800 gems £8.50 for a mere 250 stack increase. All of these are far too high.)
-Less holding stuff that should be part of the game hostage (exclusive faces).
-More weapon skins that can be bought directly for a reasonable amount.
-No holding back huge QoL changes for the sake of the gem store (transmutation crystals → PvE locker)

2: No combat movement speed reduction.
3: Better balancing. You have 3 major game modes. Stop balancing around just one of them.
4: Better gear modelling. 5 races, armour is only fitted and textured to look good on 1 of them, only looks good on Sylvari because they’re so similar to humans.
5: Charr industry is more apparent and convenient. I’m talking heavy freight trains, air ship supply lines, planes and ironclad steamer ships. The use of Charr vehicles, superior siege in WvW turns into respective charr artillery.
6: All cities are to the quality of Divinites Reach.
7: Everything else I would change.

Coming back I find out that actually some omnipotent and omniscient sylvari who is the master of everything ever because of argle-bargle decided to do it just because along with a bunch of other faff.

Because Anets idea of a fair challenge is a fat sack of health with poorly telegraphed 1-shot kill attacks and where all the normal attacks do so much damage that they must be all dodged despite coming once every two seconds.
The poorly telegraphed attack in this case being the out-of-no-where tremor projectiles that shoot out a moment after his PBAoE knock-back that you would never know were coming from the animation alone.
Indeed it is dumb to have a fight like this appear in what is likely the first experience of dungeons players are going to have. Dropping dead from full hp from an attack you never saw coming, or couldn’t realistically see coming, is a thing long time players are used to but would certainly be a rage inducing moment for a first timer. Even though i’ve been a serious gamer since Atari, GW2 was my first serious MMO experience. After being disappointed with 99% of the gear in the game, i started looking up galleries of other recent MMOs and was completely amazed at how the designs of pretty much every korean MMO that has come out in the past few years completely blows GW2’s stuff out of the water. Maybe they need to hire more korean artists.

There’s no point hiring good artists if the people who actually have to model the gear aren’t going to, or are allowed to, put in the effort required to get them to an at least acceptable level of quality for all races. I mean look at charr, they’re a race of gigantic humanoid bull-tigers. When properly geared they should look like pictures 1 and 2 but instead they almost always look like 3.
There’s no point drawing up the best looking swords and armour in the world if the final product is going to be a distorted smudgy mess on everything that isn’t a human or sylvari.
EDIT: Also this will never happen as anything even remotely decent is going to be exclusive to the gem store and simultaneously ridiculously overpriced (500 gems for a single bit of poorly made armour for almost 3 times it’s real value anyone?), or a 1/1M chance RNG.

Refine ascended materials into bloodstone bricks, stars and ingots until you’re around level 465-475, depending on your patience. Keep in mind you need 5 of each for a single weapon. After refining at least 5 bloodstone bricks you can make toxic sharpening stones instead using your dust as these give better XP.
Hopefully you have a few dozen orichalcum ores and globs of ectoplasm stashed as the next bit will be much cheaper if you do.
Use this page: http://www.gw2crafts.net/huntsman_400.html for suggestions on what to craft at your level. Save up a good pile of money (I needed less than 100G for the whole of 400-500 in the end) and most importantly use a crafting booster! It will save you a tonne of cash as most discoveries will give you critical XP, greatly reducing the amount you need to discover and thus the amount you need to spend. Don’t just buy everything the guide says at once as with the booster you won’t be making everything it says due to the bonus XP. Instead look at the stuff you need for each individual set of items and buy bit by bit so you don’t over-spend.

Before they make new armour I would really like them to make all the old armour fit races other than humans. Everyone knows that when they make armour they model and texture it on a human frame then stretch it to fit the other races.
Probably the most painfully obvious example of this is HotW shoulders on a norn male compared to a human as well as every armour on any charr ever (seriously, at this point I don’t even have to look at an armour before I say “looks bad on a charr” and yet I’ll still be right 99% of the time.)
Here’s some of the things I would say that needs doing:
1. Every race needs it’s own model and texture, not an adapted humans.
2. Charr need to stand up straighter and be more like their concept art. Their current stance is a big reason why a lot of armours look so silly.
3. Armour models need to behave better. This is most noticeable on heavy armour and is when supposedly solid bits of metal, usually shoulders, bend. Metal should be rigid where possible.
4. Armour should be less flat. Many armours are just a texture on a smooth body giving them a very fake look. Related to this is how some pieces have no depth to them at all. As in if you were to look at them from the side they would disappear, again this makes the piece look like its made from paper.

Also while you’re at it, add this concept Charr armour.

Armours made of solid material like rock or metal don’t noticeably stretch and warp like in Guild Wars 2, rather they are designed to fit the character and their movements.
A general change that I would like to see is the way different parts of armour react to dyes. Metal should look like metal while leather straps or fabric areas should look like leather and fabric. Some armours do react well and will take a shiny chrome look if silver is a applied while others like my T3 heavy charr armour will just be matt silver.

So far using selective start-up and carefully un-ticking the boxes for all of the programs in MSCONFIG I know I don’t need running appears to have solved the issue for me today as I have not had a single issue when loading since doing so. Hopefully you’ll have the same result.

For the past couple of days I have experienced this exact issue EVERY single time I try to load into LA on either a test human guard and the norn guardian I’m levelling now. I try to load the game and it gets as far as hearing the sounds of the game as if I am standing where I would be if I had loaded properly but the loading screen never leaves.
Here’s some “solutions” I’ve dredged up from threads that are over a year old about this same problem that have allowed me at least one successful load:
-Create a new GW2 shortcut to GW2.exe, right click on the shortcut, then click properties, then add to the very end of the target line a space then “-repair”. Clicking this shortcut will now supposedly repair the client (It took several minutes for me). This was only a temporary fix for me.
-Delete your local.dat file from your appdata GW2 file, also perhaps guest to a different server, again this has worked a few times but was never permanent.
-Carefully prune MSCONFIG to prevent unnecessary programs from booting or running: This has worked once but I have yet to find out if it has permanently fixed the problem. UPDATE: This is the first fix that has worked twice in a row for me.
Even then the top two fixes haven’t always worked. sometimes you’ll be able to move around LA but won’t be able to interact with anything and eventually you will disconnect and inevitably hit the exact same problem when loading back in.

I’ve since deleted this Norn Warrior, however the guardian I’m levelling now will have this combo, only he may have T3 leggings and the T2 helmet. I used the Norn Greatsword (T2 cultural) with this set-up to complete the look.

Well, if no-one cares that it’s broke; better fix it. Adding more boring is always a +.

Seriously though, of all things to fix why fix the one thing that isn’t even an issue?

They really should be skin items instead of armour in their own right. However that wouldn’t sell transmutation crystals. =/

What is ONE change you'd make to your class?

Warrior: No root on 100B. I don’t care if I move at 1% speed, at least when I hit dodge I’ll actually dodge. Currently whirl-wind is the only reliable way of breaking out of 100B into an evade.

better armor/dye preview system.

Dye your currently worn armor a certain color scheme. Click preview on the item you are previewing. Colors don’t work for you? Color your current armor a different set of colors then preview again. It’s actually already pretty kitten easy and very convenient. I’d rather them leave it the way it is than mess with it and break something. The only suggestion I have ever ever ever had about the dye system: Dyable weapons. Come on ANET. You know you want to.

Actually when it comes to previewing dye combos on previewed armours the preview system is far from convenient. If you wish to change your previewed dye you must close down the preview window, change dyes and then preview all of the armour again as it won’t update automatically.
The only other option is to select preview on your dye, but that just applies it to the first dye slot of all of the armour pieces which may not be what you wish to do for all 6.
A convenient preview system would allow you to access the dye pallet and apply them in the exact same way you would for worn armour.

tone down the spiky damage already

I wouldn’t mind spike damage provided it was always made absolutely clear to the player that the attack is coming their way and is going to hurt. The problem is that in far too many instances the attack is so badly telegraphed/ not telegraphed at all meaning you either don’t get enough time to react or you didn’t even see it coming.
Possibly one of the worst offenders would be the AoE cast by Captain Ashym in the Urban Battlegrounds fractal. It’s a meteor storm that can drop a player from full hp to downed to dead in seconds yet is only telegraphed via subtle boss animations; animations which are frequently hidden behind particle effects and charr npcs. There isn’t even a red circle as far as I have ever seen which breaks the games own rules about AoE’s.

I don’t see what’s so good about it. So far I’ve found it more annoying than anything else when you sit there smacking away the large downed health pools of a group of sylvari or plopping a banner on them one by one.
